The Role of a Student in Society Essay

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writerā€™s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

In my everyday life, I play many different roles, but currently, the most prominent one is the role of a student. This role is primarily for me because the majority of people whom I communicate with observe me as such. A college in itself is a place where people are expressing distinct roles and act according to this setting, or shared reality (OpenStax 86). Every person at this stage has a determining role they are expected to play.

As a student, I am expected to complete many tasks in a short amount of time and behave in a specific manner. This includes being polite and respectful to others by their status in the educational facility, as well as being prepared for the tasks, being attentive, and on time. While in college with many people around, especially if there are any professors present, I feel obligated to stay at my best behavior. However, the situation differs when there are only students around, as there is a different kind of pressure in the company of equals. Cooley states that ā€œwe imagine how we look to others, draw conclusions based upon their reactions to usā€ (qtd. in OpenStax 87). Since I am expected to behave differently in front of these two hierarchical groups, I act the way I want that group of people to think of me.

I perceive my status as a college student as something that I have achieved. I believe many other students follow the same trail of thoughts, and I regard them as equals in this setting. A student can have many various responsibilities, duties, and behaviors to follow in a college and outside of it, and can experience role strain. I experience role strain during my study when multiple overlaying duties accumulate and overlap with my other roles. Role strain is especially prominent during exams, however, it is still manageable.

Thus, apart from being entrusted with rights, students are entrusted with responsibilities and duties that they are expected to perform and help in the development of society.

Charity begins at home, and school is the second home of students. Every student has some responsibilities towards the institutions they are studying in. They are given duties to perform, which they are expected to discharge efficiently.

Students play an active role in classrooms. Apart from the classroom or traditional learning, the world of education and learning is changing rapidly. Find out how traditional learning differs from online learning .

Some of the roles and responsibilities of students in classroom management are:

  • Being in their best of behaviours: An educational environment is required to ensure that the students get access to an excellent education. But, for that environment to exist, they are expected to comply with behavioural expectations and display values of politeness, kindness, compassion, and respect.
  • Meeting academic expectations: Students must meet the academic expectations by creating a collaborative learning environment and displaying values of teamwork and unity.
  • Being respectful and punctual: By being respectful, students contribute to a quality learning environment and reduce disruptions and disciplinary actions. Students are also supposed to be punctual. Being late for class creates a negative impact on their grades. Thus, students must maintain discipline in the classroom.

Besides performing duties towards their class, students play an important role in managing their school.

Given below is a list of ten duties that students should perform in school:

  • Obey the teachers
  • Maintain discipline in the class
  • Keep the school neat
  • Greet everyone with a smile
  • Abide by the rules of the school
  • Complete the assigned work on time
  • Participate in the activities organized in the school
  • Co-operate with the teachers
  • Decorate their school with charts, posters, et cetera

Students play a crucial role in managing their schools and classrooms. But, that is not enough for them. Ultimately, students are expected to come out of their comfort zones as able leaders and contribute to the development of the society they are living in.

The various responsibilities of students towards their school and society are:

Eradicate literacy by using their acquired skills, and teach others to read and write. One way of achieving this goal can be actively participating in literary campaigns organized by schools and imparting mass education.

  • Fight anti-social activities of a few corrupt people.
  • Work with the teachers and other staff members of the school to uplift the socially and economically disadvantaged groups, blind children, and orphans.
  • Be sensitive towards their environment, and devise ways to protect their environment from pollution, fight energy crises, and more. Some ways of doing this are keeping their localities and school clean and tidy, practising reuse, recycling, and reducing, et cetera.
  • Students are the future of their nation, and it is important for them to actively participate in cultural, social, political, and economic affairs, striving to be the change they wish to see around themselves.

We sincerely hope you’ve got a solid idea about the responsibilities and duties of being a student.

Education is where a student gets formed from. Education is in-fact character building in students. It through education that he understands the facts and figures and how things ought to be sorted and what is the current scenario and many other relevant important factors. Based on these factors are what he redesigns his thoughts and ideas and this is what helps him in due course when being an adult.

Education enables the student to understand within himself his strengths and freedom in his life. Education starts not only at school, but from every home. A child learns from his home, school and then from the society and thus every individual that a kid interacts, influences his life later on.

When students are being treated with due respect and responsibility, they have also lived up to be responsible and respect in return to the society. When being recognized, they have the acceptance to work for a better society through hardships rather than giving up in between.

Today, there are many activities that students take initiatives for the betterment of the society. We have seen that students of the younger classes taking steps to plant tress and thus promoting awareness programs on protecting tress and the importance of planting trees for the coming generations, rather than felling trees. There are activities where students promote for the awareness of old age and rescue shelters. College going students take the initiatives to help the old and abandoned people on the streets and get them to a rescue shelter or homes that provide proper food, clothing and medication for them.

Apart from these , when there is a natural calamity in any part of the globe, schools across the globe contribute to the affected people and place what they can and this kind of programs would help realize young children the importance of brotherhood. At schools there are the NCC camps and Scout troops that have been trained and in such situations they have been of immense help and have done real commendable services to the nation.

Apart from services, we have political arena where students are seen. With the right kind of motivation and guidance, they could become the most trustworthy, most accepted and sensible leaders for tomorrow. However, if exploited, they could become the worst and corrupt leaders. It is we who bring the good and bad out in our students.

We have seen how the youth stand as one against the negative aspects like corruption, violence, terrorism and fight for the peace and security of the nation. However we see that there is a lack of patriotism in the youth slowly coming up which destroys the harmony and peace of the nation.

Students act as bridges between two generations. They need to realize and understand the happening of today and eliminate the bad and extract the good and implement for tomorrow. For this understanding , the right education with the right involvement of the happening is a requirement and the education system should see to it that are being equipped for a better understanding rather than classifying education as elementary, secondary or higher education. The syllabus and the activities should be framed in such a manner that it is interactive and interesting so that students understand and signify the importance of what they learn.

If we do not mould our youth today, we may have to regret tomorrow as tomorrowā€™s nation is in the hands of our upcoming youth and they in turn would pass on what they have acquired in a better format to the forth coming generations, thus enabling the nation to grow in all sectors and make is one among the most powerful and harmonious nations of tomorrow.

Set an example for your young child and he will make sure that he lives up to your expectations for tomorrow. When every family sets an example, it would grow into the society and thus grow out to the nation. So let us join hands now for a better tomorrow through our youth who are budding students now. India needs us and we should stand for HERā€¦.

Duties of A Student Paragraph

We live and learn. Education continues all through life. But by student life we generally mean the part of life spent at educational institutions. It is a very important part of a man’s life. Student time is the seed time of life. What is sown now will be reaped in advanced age. It is the appropriate time for a student, not only to acquire knowledge, but to know his

country and people. A student has many duties. He has duty to himself, duty to the family and duty to his society. The first and foremost duty of a student is to study hard to learn his lessons and gain knowledge. For, knowledge gives us power and a pleasing personality. We all know, character is our greatest strength and health is our best asset. So a student must learn to be disciplined, punctual, honest and diligent. He has to build his body and mind. He must be obedient to his  parents, teachers and elders. ‘Charity begins at home’. So a student must make their parents happy at home. Students are the future of the country. They are a part and parcel of society. So a student should spend some time on social work. Social service is an important part of education. A student can join social activities like literacy campaigns, pollination control or tree plantation programmes. During his long vacation a student may go out to teach the poor people. He can help people during floods and famine. He can raise funds to help the flood victims. Social service creates fellow feelings. It is an ideal education through work. It enlarges a student’s sense of value and his vision. But his primary duty is to study and learn his lessons. Studies are to a student what religious devotion is to a hermit.

Duties of A Student

We live and learn. Education continues all through life. But by student life we generally mean the part of life spent at educational institutions. It is a very important part of a man’s life. Student time is the seed time of life. It is the appropriate time for a student, not only to acquire knowledge, but to know his country and people. A student may not have to bear the burden of his family, but he has to perform a number of duties and responsibilities. These duties and responsibilities do not hamper his studies but help in his all-round development.

Our country is troubled by evils like communalism, casteism, superstitions, and regionalism. So, to fight against such evils, students can play a vital role. A student is loved by all. He has an acceptability in every sphere of the society. So he can go to the slum areas and strive for its upliftment. A student can actively work to uproot illiteracy, spread consciousness about health hygiene, and sanitation among the poor people. He can work collectively through National Service schemes and other organizations for rural upliftment by helping them to set up cooperative societies. In this way a student can fight against the exploitation of poor villagers and show them the way of getting easy access to bank loans and other facilities of savings. He can also take part in relief operations during the time of flood and famine.

Students are the future citizens of the country. They must have political consciousness as it would help him  to mould the country. He should know how a government functions, and he must be aware of the socio-political condition of his country. But he must not actively get involved with politics. In fact the present indiscipline and unrest among the student community is largely a result of partisan politics. A student should be aware of the mischiefs of party spirit as it spreads calumny and vitiates judgement.

A student should aim for an all-round development of his faculties. Acquisition of bookish knowledge and being dabbled in politics is not the objective of a student. His foremost duty is to lead a disciplined life, develop some good habits and acquire knowledge. Only then he can be a living force of the society and mould the future of his country.

Introduction: The student life is the period of life when a boy or a girl goes school or college to acquire knowledge.

Period of Preparation : The student life is the seed-time of life. If we sow seeds in the right time, we get good crops. In the same way, if we go to school, attend our classes, prepare our lessons regularly and work very hard all the time, we get good results. There is a proverb, “As you sow, so you reap.” Student life is, therefore, the best period of preparation for life. If anyone neglects this period, he harms his own career.

Period of Acquiring Knowledge: A student must also read good books and newspapers regularly. He should learn about his people, his country and also the world around him.

Formation of Character : Only acquiring knowledge is not sufficient for a student. He must cultivate good manners and develop the good qualities like self-discipline, honesty, truthfulness, fellow-feeling and broad outlook about life. He must be obedient to his teachers and parents. He should always mix with good people and avoid evil company.

Other Duties : A student cannot study all the time. He should take physical exercise and play games regularly. He should also take part in cultural activities like debate, drama, music, recitation etc. to develop his personality. He should eat a balanced diet and say his prayers regularly.

Conclusion : A student of today is a worthy citizen of tomorrow. He must, therefore, always try to keep him physically and mentally sound for success in practical life.

Applying to college can be daunting, especially when it comes to writing a personal statement. This essay showcases not just your writing skills but also your unique personality, achievements, and aspirations. Understanding that while grades are crucial, a personal statement often becomes the differentiating factor in your application. To navigate this essential component, we’ve compiled a ten-step guide, replete with examples, to ensure your personal statement leaves a lasting impression on admissions officers.

Applying to college can be a daunting task, especially when it comes to writing a personal statement. This essay not only showcases your writing skills but also highlights your unique personality, achievements, and aspirations. While it may seem unnecessary, tedious, time-consuming, and just another tick-the-box, know that as each application is processed, grades are just one of the criteria of selection, more often than not a personal statement becomes the differentiating factor.

A diverse group of smiling students looking down into the camera, holding a speech bubble sign that says 'THIS IS MY STORY' at a gathering, symbolizing individuality and shared experiences in crafting personal narratives.

To help you navigate this crucial component of your application, we’ve compiled a ten-step guide, complete with inspiring examples to ensure your personal statement makes a lasting impression on admissions officers.

  • Start Early and Brainstorm Begin the process early to give yourself plenty of time to brainstorm. Reflect on your experiences, achievements, and motivations. Think about what makes you unique, both in terms of personality and life experiences.
  • Understand the Prompt Make sure you clearly understand what the college is asking for. Each institution may have different prompts or questions. Tailor your response specifically to each prompt, ensuring you answer it fully and directly. Be comprehensive and succinct in your answers, choosing words that convey your candidature the best.
  • Create an Outline Draft an outline to organize your thoughts and ensure a coherent flow of ideas. This will help you structure your statement effectively, making sure every part contributes towards presenting a compelling narrative.
  • Exhibit, Don’t Tell Use specific examples to demonstrate your qualities and achievements. Instead of stating that youā€™re a great leader, describe a situation where you demonstrated leadership. This method makes your statement more engaging and believable.
  • Focus on Your Strengths While it might be tempting to cover a wide range of subjects, focusing on a few key strengths or experiences can have a stronger impact. Depth over breadth is crucial in personal statements.
  • Be Authentic Admissions officers can tell when a statement is genuine. Write honestly about your experiences and passions and let your natural voice shine through. Authenticity is key to making a personal statement stand out.
  • Get Feedback After drafting your statement, seek feedback from teachers, mentors, or friends. They can provide insights on clarity, grammar, and the overall impact of your essay. They all have a perspective of you from an external viewpoint, so do not skip this step.
  • Revise and Edit Use the feedback to revise your statement. Look for areas where you can clarify your points, eliminate redundancy, and correct grammatical errors. This step is crucial for polishing your final submission.
  • Keep It Concise Adhere to the word limit. Being able to express your thoughts concisely and effectively is a skill appreciated by admissions officers.
  • Final Review Before submitting, do a final review. Read your statement out loud to catch any remaining errors or awkward phrasing. Make sure it sounds natural and is easy to read.

Examples of Exemplary Personal Statements:

Example 1: The Innovator Jane’s personal statement begins with a vivid description of her tinkering with a broken radio at age eight, which sparked her interest in technology. She intertwines her personal journey with her academic achievements, such as leading her school’s robotics team to a national competition. Jane uses specific examples, like designing a new robot navigation system, to demonstrate her passion and skill in engineering.

Example 2: The Community Leader John opens his statement with a powerful recount of organizing community relief efforts during a local flood. Highlighting his role in mobilizing volunteers and coordinating with local authorities, he demonstrates strong leadership and commitment to his community. His narrative includes feedback from the community and the personal growth he experienced, providing a well-rounded view of his character.

Example 3: The Attentive Listener Emmaā€™s personal statement explores her profound appreciation for music and its role in shaping her interpersonal connections. She describes an afternoon spent sharing playlists with a group of international students, which turned into a deep discussion about cultural expressions through music. This experience not only highlights her listening skills but also illustrates her ability to forge meaningful relationships through shared interests.

Example 4: The Compassionate Leader David writes about his high emotional quotient and how it spurred him to lead a community initiative focused on animal welfare. His personal statement recounts organizing local workshops to educate people about animal kindness and launching a successful campaign for a local shelter. Davidā€™s story reflects his empathy and leadership in translating compassion into actionable community improvement.

Commentary: Every life is extraordinary; it’s how you narrate your story that captures the reader’s eye. Your personal statement should reflect your unique experiences and aspirations.

Conclusion:

In crafting your personal statement, remember, you don’t have to be extraordinary in the usual senseā€”honesty and transparency are key. Be a dreamer of the art of the possible; dream as big as you can and let those dreams articulate themselves in your words. This approach not only reveals your true self to admissions officers but also shows your potential to contribute meaningfully to their academic community. Start your adventure today! Use these steps as your guide to find the university that best fits your future goals. Dream big and achieve even bigger.

I Invited My Students to Be the Principal for a Day. Hereā€™s What I Learned

052024 OPINION Khoshaba PRINCIPAL end the year with positivity

  • Share article

There is tired and then thereā€™s ā€œeducator tired.ā€

More meetings, more conflicts to mediate, more data to collect and analysis overload, and more staffing decisionsā€”the to-do list is exhausting. By springtime, most of us are operating on empty tanks while battling a seasonal-affective slump carried over from the winter.

With some degree of consistency, we can predict the times of the year when staff morale is highest, as well as the months when you can expect teachers to be crawling toward the finish line of upcoming school breaks. I heard a person once say, ā€œIf we can predict it, then we can influence it.ā€

About This Series

In this biweekly column , principals and other authorities on school leadershipā€”including researchers, education professors, district administrators, and assistant principalsā€”offer timely and timeless advice for their peers.

Like many principals, Iā€™m an optimistic person by nature. But in mid-February, I felt myself struggling to change my heartache of stress into heartfelt joy.

When I analyzed why I was feeling this way, it became clear that I wasnā€™t living my ā€œwhyā€ for working in public education. I was drowning in meetings that discussed adult issues instead of being focused on student learning and the experience of being a student at my school.

After consulting with a colleague, I decided to change how I was spending my time at work. That small change had a huge impact on my ability to refocus and feel fulfilled.

Several years ago, I participated in a principal challenge for which I shadowed a student for a day. It was an amazing experience that allowed me to better understand my school from a studentā€™s perspective.

As I reflected on how to reenergize several months ago, I decided to try this activity once again at my new schoolā€”but with a twist. I wanted to help bridge the divide between students and adults. This time, I offered my students the opportunity to be principal for the day by following me as I made my rounds with classroom visits and staff member meetings.

My request of the students who joined me was simple: 1) Get parent permission, 2) be responsible for the work you missed in class, 3) communicate with your teachers that you would be with me for the day, and 4) write up a one-page summary of the events of the day and your reflections.

To my surprise, I was flooded with student requests. Just the idea of having a shared experience with the students we serve was uplifting. I marveled at the idea that students would want to know what my job entailed. It was a great way to connect and build kinship between students and the leaders that serve them.

What I imagined would be one day with one student shadowing me evolved into three days of multiple students per day participating in this activity.

Here are some of the lessons from the students who joined me:

  • Students and staff have a right to speak up, even if they are the only dissenting voice.
  • Keep an open mind when people bring concerns to you. The importance of growing from mistakes was highlighted.
  • Treat everyone with respect, no matter their position.
  • Communication should be two ways, not a monologue.
  • Make time to help others.

They enjoyed seeing the authentic and positive relationships that occur between administration and students and staff, but I was just as happy to learn from the students. They shared that they were surprised to see how well staff got along with each other behind the scenes, as well as with students in the hallways and classrooms. Our first shadow-the-principal day was March 14 (aka Pi Day in the math world), so the students had a chance to eat pie while talking with teachers in the math workroom.

My ā€œapprenticesā€ also enjoyed hearing a student share his idea for completing his Eagle Scout project that provided diabetic kits for students in need. He and I brainstormed various ways to complete the project, as well as how to market and sustain it in the years to come. The students later commented that they were surprised to observe an administrator working alongside their peers, generating ideas together.

Besides circulating throughout the school and speaking with a number of students and staff, the apprentices and I discussed ways that artificial intelligence could be used to facilitate teaching and learning in a positive way. I always find it enlightening to hear studentsā€™ technology ideas, including for AI useā€”for example, to assist with study tips or to organize their notesā€”were as innovative as I had heard from any presenters.

Finally, we ended the day by taking a stroll around the track at our football stadium. I shared that I like to go outside as much as I can to exercise and gather my thoughts. I try to do that once per week as part of my self-care routine. The students shared that they were pleasantly surprised to hear me prioritize that type of activity and that they thought their peers would benefit from such an activity as well.

Iā€™m proud of my students for taking a chance on being a leader for the day. Students in 2024 have so many pressures facing them, so accepting one more thing can be a daunting task.

Hereā€™s a challenge for everyone reading this article: Make time to prioritize your own ā€œwhy.ā€ This is especially important as we enter the final marking period of the year, when emotions tend to run high and stamina tends to wane.

Fill your tank with the kind of energy that inspired you to enter our profession. Look for the moments in your school on a daily basis when you can be kind, learn something new, build a new relationship, and spend time with those that brought you into a career in educationā€”your students!

Fellows provide individual (and sometimes small-group) consultations to support writing or presentation assignments.

Duties and responsibilities

As a Writing and Speaking Fellow, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Training: Completing a six-week training sequence at the beginning of the semester that will prepare you to confidently and comfortably conduct consultations and provide multiple forms of feedback (~six hours per week).
  • Writing and speaking support: Meet with students in the selected course for two rounds of 45-minute consultations (~five to seven hours per week).
  • This role qualifies as an honors co-curricular experience and you’ll receive two co-curricular credits through the Honors College for your service!
  • You will build vital interpersonal and leadership skills by engaging in professional contexts.
  • You will gain excellent experience with networking and professionalizing by working directly with faculty in your discipline.
  • You will gain practical and hands-on experience working in educational and academic support contexts.

We’re looking for a student who:

  • Is currently enrolled as a student at the University of Nevada, Reno and has been a student in the Honors College for at least one semester
  • Has an interest in working with peers in educational support contexts
  • Has strong interpersonal skills
  • Wants to hone their writing and speaking skills in their discipline

  • You will be asked to log in with your NetID and password.
  • Provide information for one academic reference (name, email, job title).

How to Remove Section Breaks in Word? [For Students]

As a student navigating the intricacies of academic formatting, I understand the frustration of encountering stubborn section breaks that disrupt the flow of your document. In this guide, I share my insights and experiences to help you tackle this common issue effectively. Let's dive in and unravel the mystery of removing section breaks in Word!

Part 1: Why Canā€™t I Remove Section Breaks in Word?

Have you ever struggled to remove a section break in your Word document? You're not alone. Section breaks, while useful for formatting, can sometimes be a bit tricky to delete. This part will explore two common scenarios where removing section breaks might cause frustration:

1. Failing to Remove Section Breaks in Word on Mac

Unlike Windows, deleting section breaks on Mac using Backspace or Delete might not work as intended. Here's why:

Hidden Section Break: Section breaks are hidden by default in Word. To see them, you need to enable the "Show/Hide" formatting marks.

Unselectable Break: Even with formatting marks displayed, the section break might still appear unselectable. This can happen if it's followed by a page break or other formatting element.

2. Failing to Remove the Last Section Break Without Losing Formatting in Your Essay

Especially for essays, the last section break might be causing an unwanted page break. However, deleting it can remove your formatting throughout the document. Here's why this occurs:

Linked Sections: Sections in your document can inherit formatting from the previous section. Deleting the last section break can merge its formatting with the preceding section, potentially causing inconsistencies.

Scenario: Imagine your essay has two sections. The first section has single line spacing, while the second (shorter) section has double line spacing for the references. Deleting the last section break might apply the double spacing to the entire essay.

Solution to these problems will be covered in Part 2!

Part 2: Easy Steps to Remove Section Breaks in Word for Your Essay

In Part 2 of this guide, I'll walk you through the simple steps to remove section breaks in Word for your essays. Whether you're using WPS Office or Microsoft Word, these easy-to-follow instructions will help you maintain smooth formatting in your documents. Say goodbye to pesky section breaks and hello to seamless editing with these straightforward techniques.

Remove a section break in Word

There are two main ways to remove section breaks in Word:

Using the Show/Hide button:

Step 1: Click the Show/Hide button in the Paragraph group on the Home tab. This will reveal all formatting marks in your document, including section breaks.

Step 2: Place your cursor at the beginning of the line after the section break you want to remove.

Step 3: Press the Backspace key.

Using the Navigation Pane :

Step 1: Open your Word document: Launch WPS Office and open the document where you want to remove the section break.

Step 2: Access the "View" tab: Look for the toolbar at the top of the Word window. Click on the "View" tab located in the menu options.

Step 3: Enable the Navigation Pane: Within the "View" tab, locate the "Show" section. Make sure that the "Navigation Pane" option is checked or enabled.

Step 4: Navigate to the "Section" tab: Once the Navigation Pane is activated, you'll see it appear on the left side of your document. Click on the " Section" tab within the Navigation Pane.

Step 5: Identify the section break: In the Navigation Pane, you'll now see a list of headings or sections in your document. Scroll through this list to find the section break you want to remove.

Step 6: Select the section break: Click on the section break you wish to delete. It will be highlighted in the Navigation Pane.

Step 7: Remove the section break: Once the section break is selected, simply press the "Delete" key on your keyboard. The section break will be deleted from your document.

Here's how to do it:
