  • What is Special Research in Pokemon GO?

What rewards are available in Special Research?

Does special research expire, does special research cost money.

Pokemon GO offers a wide variety of activities for players, aside from being a great way to encourage going out for a walk when the weather is nice. While players can simply just roam around and do things like catch Pokemon or hatch eggs in an incubator, Special Research can give Pokemon GO players some direction if they are not sure what to do next.

Furthermore, Special Research can also provide unique rewards that cannot be obtained by other means. It also provides players with items that they would otherwise have to pay for, which makes Special Research more attractive to those looking to play entirely for free.

What is Special Research in Pokemon GO ?

To put it simply, Special Research is a series of tasks that require players to go through a fixed list of actions and activities as they are playing Pokemon GO . Tasks that players will need to complete include simple things like catching Pokemon , visiting PokeStops, making "Great" or "Nice" throws, and transferring Pokemon to Professor Willow. Some more complex, difficult, and time-consuming tasks includes things like having to battle other players, accumulate walking distance in kilometers, and win raids. Special Research has a variety of stages, each with a set of tasks that players must complete.

Aside from serving as a glorified to-do list for the player, Special Research also has some story involved as well. Early on in Pokemon GO , the story of Special Research involved the player assisting Professor Willow with his efforts to find mythical Pokemon like Mew and Celebi. Special Research also helps promote new features that have recently been added to Pokemon GO . A good example of this would be the event A Mysterious Incense, which promotes the new item Daily Adventure Incense.

As mentioned above, completing tasks in Special Research will provide players with a wide variety of rewards to pursue. As players complete sets of tasks, they can receive things like Poke Balls, Stardust, Experience points, and encounters with Pokemon that cannot be found by other means. While this mostly means mythical Pokemon, there are some non-mythical Pokemon that can be encountered and caught as well.

This includes unique versions of Pikachu in an impressive, and wide assortment of costumes ranging from silly to seasonal . Some good news about Pokemon encountered exclusively as a reward for Special Research is that they do not flee and have a 100% catch rate, which will make it easier for players to claim their reward after all the work it took to complete a series of Special Research tasks.

Fortunately, Special Research does not expire once players have claimed it by playing during the period it was active. However, if players neglect Pokemon GO for the duration of time that a Special Research event is available to be claimed, they will not be able to participate in it.

This allows for players to work on Special Research they have acquired at their own pace without having to worry about missing out on any of the rewards that come from completing that particular campaign, and it allows them to feel like they aren't falling behind.

In most cases, Special Research events do not cost players any money. The only exception to this would be ticketed events like the upcoming Pokemon GO Fest 2022 on August 27th, which costs players US$10.99 and gives them access to exclusive Special Research tasks that will not expire once they have been claimed. So whether they are paid or free, Special Research is an activity that can be done at a players own pace, making it very casual friendly.

Pokemon GO is available now on iOS and Android devices.

Special Research

how to get more special research in pokemon go

Special Research (Japanese: スペシャルリサーチ Special Research ) are tasks in Pokémon GO . Usually, they are assigned by Professor Willow . However, in multiple cases Rhi of the GO Ultra Recon Squad has taken Willow's stead. In some special storylines, a leader of Team GO Rocket , Arlo , Cliff , or Sierra , have given tasks to the player. Unlike Field Research , Special Research tasks have separate, fixed objectives outlined by the assigner, and they cannot be obtained from spinning PokéStops .

Players receive rewards for each Special Research task they complete. As with Field Research rewards, the Pokémon that can be caught as a Special Research reward have a set minimum IV of 10 in each stat and an initial Power Up level of 15. Special Research is currently the only method of obtaining Mew (and its Shiny variant), Celebi (and its Shiny variant), Jirachi , Spiritomb , Victini , Galarian Yamask , Aria Forme Meloetta , Hoopa Confined, and Zarude . Those Pokémon are programmed to have a 100% catch rate.

Most Special Research tasks are available once the player reaches level 5. They can only be completed once, and tasks cannot be deleted. One set of Special Research tasks can be completed concurrently with tasks from another uncompleted set of Special Research.

Nintendo Direct June 2024 Predictions: Which Games Are Most Likely

How wuthering waves pity system works, leaked epic games free game for may 30 comes with one major caveat.

The final tasks for the All-In-One Special Research are here in  Pokemon Go . This guide will show players how they can complete this Special Research and collect their rewards. Pokemon Go has held tons of events throughout 2021 and it is only March. One of the biggest events the game held was its premium Kanto Tour event. For those who were able to participate, they paid for a ticket and received a Special Research Task that allows them to collect a Shiny Mew as their final reward. The thing is the second tier of this Special Research required players to wait 30 days until they were able to unlock it. Now that 30 days have passed, players can complete the final step to get their hands on their Shiny Mew. Here is the complete set of Special Research Tasks for All-In-One.

It's important to mention that only players who purchased the Kanto Tour ticket are allowed to participate in this event . Unfortunately, the event has come and went and the ticket itself is no longer available. The only way to get a Shiny Mew now is to either trade with another player who is willing to part with it or wait for another event to happen in the future. For those who did pick up the pass, here is the complete set of Special Research Tasks for All-In-One.

Complete All-In-One 151 Special Research Tasks and Rewards in Pokemon Go

As mentioned, players will need the Kanto Tour ticket to participate in this event . Here are all the Special Research Tasks and Rewards.

  • Step 1: Earn a Platinum Kanto Medal (51 Ultra Balls), Send 151 Gifts to friends (1 Poffin), Make 151 Great Throws (1510 Stardust), Rewards: 5100 X0, 1 Raid Pass, 1510 Stardust
  • Step 2: Catch a Pokemon 30 Days in a row (51 Ultra Balls), Catch 151 different species of Pokemon (1 Glacial Lure), Catch 30 Pokemon of each type (this is broken down into 18 different tasks) (151 XP) Rewards: 5100 XP, 3 Rare Candy, 1510 Stardust
  • Step 3: Reach level 40 (4000 Stardust), Spin 151 Pokestops (3 Rocket Radar), Complete 151 Field Research Tasks (3 Super Incubators), Walk 151 km (151 Ultra Balls), Catch 1510 Pokemon (1 Incense), Rewards: 1 Star Piece, Shiny Mew Encounter, 1 Lucky Egg
  • Step 4: Claim Reward! Rewards: 3 TMs, 20 Mew Candy, Shiny Mew Shirt, 1510 Stardust, 5100 XP, 1510 Stardust

Shiny Mew is obviously the most valuable Pokemon in this entire set . Those who participated in the Kanto Tour are really rewarded with something special. It will be interesting what they decide to do with other "Tour" events moving forward in the game.

Necrozma fused with Lunala in Pokemon Go.

This research will net you an encounter with Necrozma while forcing you to choose between Solgaleo and Lunala. Depending on your decision, you get a guaranteed encounter with one of the other Legendaries and enough Solar Fusion Energy or Lunar Fusion Energy to fuse Necrozma with them at the end.

Sendai City Skies Special Research page one

Total Rewards: 25 Furfrou Candy, a Furfrou encounter, and two Lucky Eggs

Sendai City Skies Special Research — Choose Radar Tuning: Event Eevee or Emolga

Your choice here will not impact your rewards; the only thing that changes is which Pokémon is prioritized by your Pokémon Go Nearby Radar, making it more likely you’ll encounter an Eevee wearing a Sun or Moon Crown or Emolga.

Here is the next page of Sendai City Skies Special Research, where only one research task is changed based on your decision.

Sendai City Skies Special Research page two (Eevee or Emolga)

  • Three Razz Berries
  • Two Poffins

Total Rewards: Two Hyper Potions, 2,024 XP, two Revives

Sendai City Skies Special Research — Choose Solgaleo or Lunala

If you select “Basking in the Radience” or “Hidden in the Umbra” for your path here, you will alter which Legendary Pokémon and new Energy you will encounter.

Basking in the Radience will net you an encounter with Solgaleo and give you enough Solar Fusion Energy to fuse it with Necrozma into Dusk Mane Necrozma. Likewise, Hidden in the Umbra will focus on Lunala and Lunar Fusion Energy, which lets you fuze Necrozma into Dawn Wings Necrozma.

Both paths feature a Necrozma encounter and mostly unchanged tasks and rewards, outside the Energy types and Legendary encounters.

Sendai City Skies Special Research page three (Basking in the Radiance)

  • Five Pinap Berries
  • 24 Ultra Balls
  • Two Max Potions

Total Rewards: Two Premium Battle Passes, a Solgaleo encounter, two Golden Razz Berries

10 Most Impossible Research Tasks In Pokemon GO, According to Fans

Image of Amanda Kay Oaks

Not all research tasks in Pokemon GO are created equal, as some are so difficult that players are still working to check them off the list even years later. Pokemon GO fans are sharing the most impossible research tasks in the game, and we’re here to round them up.

10 Most Impossible Research Tasks in Pokemon GO

Pokemon GO fans love a Reddit debate, and this thread about the most impossible research tasks is all too relatable. From maintaining a streak of great throws to catching an elusive Pokemon, these are the research tasks gathering dust on players’ virtual shelves.

10. Make 5 Great Throws in a Row

Honestly, the 5 Pinap Berry reward for this one doesn’t feel like nearly enough. Maintaining a streak of Great Throws without missing even once. Sounds impossible. And it basically is.

9. Find 10 Kecleon

Image of three PokeStops from Pokemon GO, one with a Kecleon in front of it

This is a numbers game where you need to spin as many PokeStops as possible to find the ones where Kecleon is hiding.

It becomes nearly impossible if you live in a rural area without many PokeStops, and many players are stuck forever searching for their 10 Kecleon as a result.

8. Evolve a Feebas

Feebas requires the buddy task of walking 20km and a whopping 100 candies to evolve into the more graceful Milotic. This is a time investment, especially if you find Feebas as creepy to look at as I do.

While it’s not the toughest task around once you’ve managed to catch Feebas, the sheer amount of time it takes leaves it on many players’ perpetual task lists.

7. Let’s Go, Meltan! Catch 2 Lileep Task

Like many older research stories in Pokemon GO, this one relies on catching a Pokemon that doesn’t spawn often anymore. And in this case, you’ve got to catch it twice. Talk about a struggle.

Many players note they’ve been stuck trying to catch the 2 Lileep required to move on in this research story for literal years.

6. Catch a Ditto

Image of a sparkly blue background with a giant Ditto in the middle

Ditto spawns are rare, and it’s impossible to know you’ve got one until after you catch it. While players often share intel on which Pokemon Ditto is pretending to be at any given time, this crowdsourced information isn’t a guarantee.

That means that tracking down a Ditto to catch means clicking on every Pokemon you see, catching it, and then waiting to see whether it magically transforms into Ditto. Not an easy task.

5. Make 5 Great Curveball Throws in a Row

What’s harder than making five great throws in a row? Making sure they’re also curveballs.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t throw a solid curveball to save my life, let alone 5 in a row that also meet the great throw requirements. Clearly, I’m not alone, as many players cite this as one of the toughest research tasks.

4. Trade 3 Pokemon with a Friend

It’s great that the Pokemon Company wants us all to make more friends. It’s less great that you can only make trades in Pokemon GO once you’ve reached a certain level of friendship and that they generally require being in person.

Because trading is tough and many of us are the only IRL Pokemon GO players we know, this task sits on many players’ lists in perpetuity.

3. Take a Snapshot of Landorus

Back in 2022, the Season of Legends research story involved taking a snapshot of the Pokemon Landorus.

The only trouble? That Pokemon currently can’t be caught in the game. If you don’t happen to already have one, it’s genuinely impossible to take a snapshot of it at this point in time.

2. The “A to Zygarde” Route Tasks

Pokemon GO map image featuring the Routes character Mateo

Routes is one of the most controversial features Niantic has introduced to Pokemon GO, and they have a whole research story to go along with it. The A to Zygarde research tasks require having access to a route near you, something many players complain isn’t a thing in rural and other less populated areas.

To this day, many avid Pokemon GO fans have never once done a route, meaning they’ll never check “Trade a Gift with Mateo at the end of a route” off their list, let alone collect all those Zygarde cells.

1. Basically, Every Party Play Task

Ah, Party Play – the one feature in Pokemon GO that fans dislike more than routes (new avatar update notwithstanding). Once again, Niantic is encouraging us to hang out with our friends and play the game together in real life. The only issue? That’s not an option for many of us.

Like Routes before it, Party Play is a feature that many players have never even thought about using. In fact, even though some of the tasks on this list might be more challenging or time-consuming, this series of research tasks came up the most frequently as one that players doubt they’ll ever complete.

Pokmon GO: All Shared Skies Research Breakthrough Pokmon Guide

Quick links, what is a season in pokmon go, all new research breakthrough pokemon.

  • Seasons in Pokmon GO occur four times a year, lasting three months, and bring new spawns and events.
  • The upcoming 15th season, Shared Skies, will introduce new themed spawns, events, Battle League rotations, and more.
  • Research Breakthrough encounters for this season include Hisuian Growlithe, Larvitar, Audino, and more until September 3, 2024.

With the upcoming change in the seasons comes new opportunities in Pokémon GO . New seasons are particularly exciting in Pokémon GO, as we get a bunch of new spawns and things to do in the game. These are the times when we see a shift in the overworld map spawns, new special research opportunities, and more.

Seasons are long events that Niantic keeps the game engaging (and simultaneously difficult to complete). They happen four times a year (like a season), each lasting three months, as you'd expect. They usually come bundled with updates that change the game to align with the theme of the season - in this case, our upcoming season is Shared Skies.

Shared Skies is the 15th Season in Pokémon GO. It will bring new themed spawns, new special events, a change in the egg pool, new Battle League rotations, new seasonal bonuses. Sometimes we even get new features or updates - last Season, we got the Rediscover series of updates, for example.

Research Breakthrough encounters will also change for this season. You can expect to encounter the following Pokémon during Research Breakthroughs:

  • Hisuian Growlithe, shiny available
  • Larvitar, shiny available
  • Audino, shiny available
  • Axew, shiny available
  • Furfrou (Natural), shiny available
  • Jangmo-o, shiny available

These Pokémon will be in the breakthrough pool from Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 10:00 AM Local Time to Tuesday, September 3, 2024, at 10:00 AM Local Time. You will have plenty of time to pick some of these Pokémon up, so don't be in any rush to do so!
