The ANU International Business Plan Competition

Business Competition

The annual Australian National University International Business Plan (IBP) Competition allows students in the ANU’s Research School of Management International Business Course to work as consultants in preparing an international market expansion plan for an Australian SME. Students form teams and take on different roles within the consultancy group. As first-time participants in the Competition, Sustineo provided initial briefings to students and then met regularly with each team over a 10 week period, before playing a role in assessing the team’s findings. All-in-all it was a really rewarding experience and has only fuelled Sustineo’s interest in expanded export horizons.

The International Business Plan (IBP) Competition is supported by the Australian National University, Canberra Business Chamber, the ACT Government and Canberra Innovation Network.

Congratulations to all who participated, the standard was excellent, the depth of research impressive, and the conduct of students highly professional. You can all be very proud of your achievements!

Student Global Entrepreneurship Challenge Business Plan Competition

As part of the 2016 World Engineering Education Forum, and the Global Engineering Deans Council, a new initiative, the Global Entrepreneurship Challenge: Business Plan Competition will run. From November 7-8th, selected teams will attend a boot camp session, and then pitch their ideas to win part of a monetary prize.

Learning Outcomes

Work integrated learning, indicative assessment, inherent requirements, requisite and incompatibility, prescribed texts.

  • Offerings and Dates

This course aims to develop an advanced understanding of the international business, and international marketing environment, the international marketing mix, and international development strategies.

Specific topics include the rationale for international marketing; marketing issues related to international economic, financial, political, legal, cultural, technological environments; international marketing research; market selection and entry; product adaptation for international markets, promotion, pricing and distribution in international markets; channel selection and alliances; and strategic issues in international marketing.

Students are required to complete the International Business Plan for a local business looking to expand overseas. This course also allows undergraduate students to participate in the International Business Plan Competition as part of a Work-Integrated Learning experience with clients from industry and government.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • Classify strategies for entering export markets from extant knowledge and research;
  • Apply core theoretical concepts from international marketing, management and business to find practical solutions to constraints of small businesses;
  • Synthesis the merits of varied stakeholder and organisational evidence and secondary data for international solutions in the profession of marketing and business development;
  • Propose revised strategies and marketing communications to enter diverse international markets;
  • Assess international professional experience through an evidence-based approach to international decision making; and,
  • Reflect on the significance of international marketing, business and management in the future direction of global business developments.

Students will be engaged in projects designed with and for organisational partners.

  • Typical assessments may include, but are not restricted to: in-class exercises, written and oral assignments, quizzes, examinations, group project tasks, oral presentation, and other assessment deemed appropriate to show attainment of the learning outcomes set for the course. The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Students taking this course are expected to commit 130 hours to completing the work. For semester length offerings this will typically include 3 hours per week in class and at least 7 hours a week on average (excluding non-teaching weeks) on course reading, research, writing and assessment work.

This course has no inherent requirements.

Commonwealth Support (CSP) Students If you have been offered a Commonwealth supported place, your fees are set by the Australian Government for each course. At ANU 1 EFTSL is 48 units (normally 8 x 6-unit courses). More information about your student contribution amount for each course at Fees .

Applications for Assessment Extensions or Extenuating Circumstances

Students may request an Assessment Extension if they are unable to complete an assessment task (other than an exam) by the due date because of exceptional circumstances beyond their control. Exceptional circumstances that may warrant approval for an Assessment Extension include but are not limited to:

  • Medical reasons (student injury, illness or medical condition) of such significance that completion of the assessment task was not possible;
  • Family/personal reasons (family injury or illness, bereavement) of such significance that completion of the assessment task was not possible;
  • Employment related reasons: where a student’s employment status or employment arrangements change unexpectedly due to circumstances beyond their control of such significance that completion of the task was not possible.

However, if you fit into any one of the below circumstances, you should submit an Extenuating Circumstances Application (ECA) instead: 

  • You require more than 10 days’ extension for an assessment item worth more than 20% of the final grade;
  • You require extenuating circumstances taken into consideration during the marking of an assessment item that is already submitted (i.e. special consideration); OR
  • You need to apply for a deferred examination because you are unable to sit an examination due to extenuating circumstances.
