2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport First Drive Review: Comfy, Capable, More Efficient

The latest generation of Land Rover's luxurious Range Rover Sport SUV hits the road (and the trail) this year with new mild-hybrid and plug-in powertrain options.

The third generation of Land Rover's Range Rover Sport hits the road later this year. The midsize luxury SUV is a little larger and a touch more spacious this time around, but thanks to a healthy does of minimalist design, it sticks closely to broad strokes of the previous generation . Look more closely and you'll find new details inherited from the full-size Range Rover , such as retractable door handles, full-LED illumination and the latest generation big-screen infotainment in the dashboard.

But the most interesting changes happen under the hood, where you'll find a new turbocharged six-cylinder plug-in hybrid engine -- one of four powertrain options available, in addition to two mild hybrids and a twin-turbo V8.

Mild-hybrid or V8 power?

The new Range Rover Sport comes standard with a 3.0-liter, turbocharged, inline six-cylinder engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that powers various chassis controls and enables super-smooth stop-start fuel saving. This base P360 SE configuration makes 355 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque. It goes from 0 to 60 mph in 5.7 seconds. Stepping up to the P400 SE Dynamic spec bumps output to 395 hp and 406 lb-ft and quickens the 0-to-60 time to 5.4 seconds. Light-footed drivers should expect around 22 mpg combined for the P360 or 21 mpg for the P400, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

For the first year of production, Land Rover will also offer a P530 First Edition powered by a 523-hp, 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V8. With 553 lb-ft of torque on tap, this limited-edition Sport sprints from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds and pulls off effortless passes without breaking a sweat, even up fairly steep grades. Fuel economy, on the other hand, takes a hit, dropping to 18 mpg combined. The V8 is also the only spec to feature rear-wheel steering with up to 7.3 degrees of articulation, resulting in a tighter turning radius at low speeds -- especially helpful for trail maneuverability -- and more stable highway lane changes.

Available only for the first year of production, the P530 First Edition boasts a powerful twin-turbocharged V8 and rear-wheel steering.

P440e Autobiography plug-in hybrid

Matching the 3.0-liter turbocharged I6 with a 105-kilowatt electric motor, the Range Rover Sport P440e Autobiography's plug-in hybrid powertrain puts out a combined 434 hp and 457 lb-ft of torque. With all systems go, the P440e sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds, slowed somewhat by the heavy 31.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack integrated into the SUV's floor.

With a full charge, the P440e can cruise for an estimated 48 miles on pure electric power, though that range drops significantly if you try to use it at highway speeds. Drivers can use the navigation system to set geofences that automatically switch between the PHEV's electric and hybrid modes, preserving range for slower urban areas where the EV mode is most efficient. Fuel economy for the plug-in model hasn't yet been announced and will likely vary significantly depending on how often the owner plugs in.

The power deficit with only the 141-hp electric motor operating is noticeable. Locked in EV mode at full throttle, acceleration hits a wall at its 71-mph EV speed limit before the combustion engine takes over. Leaving the SUV in its automatic hybrid setting, however, results in a more seamless, earlier transition between the electric and hybrid drive modes, not to mention significantly more satisfying high-speed acceleration. The PHEV's 6,600-pound towing capacity is also around 1,100 pounds short of the other available powertrains. Still, there's ample torque to keep things feeling responsive and confident at lower speeds, and the P440e never feels underpowered in EV mode around town.

2023 Range Rover Sport P440e CCS charging port

Charging is fairly slow.

Plugging into a 50-kW DC fast-charging station via the CCS port rapidly boosts the P440e to an 80% charge in around 40 minutes -- not great, but DC charging is fairly rare on PHEVs, plus it can always fall back on gasoline power for longer trips, so I'm not complaining. At a 7-kW home charging station, a full charge takes around 5 hours or, if you're truly patient, the PHEV can juice up at a 2.3-kW domestic wall outlet in around 15 hours.

Visually, there's no difference between the plug-in hybrid Range Rover Sport and the mild-hybrid or V8-powered models. There's no "plug-in" badging or graphics inside or out -- actually, there are no specific badges for any powertrain -- with the only telltales being a second filler door hiding the charging port and the slightest undercarriage battery bulge that reduces the PHEV's maximum off-road breakover angle to 24.5 degrees versus 26.9 for the rest of the lineup. Approach and departure angles are unchanged at 29.7 and 30 degrees, respectively, as is the 35.4-inch wading depth.

Capable off-roader

Whatever powertrain is optioned, the new Range Rover Sport features the same smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive with locking differentials. The same all-terrain tech is also offered across the lineup, including an air suspension that can raise the ride height by 2.5 inches in Off-Road mode and features auto-leveling active roll control, all powered by the 48-volt electrical system.

Land Rover's Terrain Response 2 vehicle management software oversees the Sport's complex suspension and drivetrain settings with presets for a variety of low-grip surface types, as well as programs aimed at sporty or efficient tarmac driving. If you don't want to fiddle with the settings you can also just leave Terran Response in Auto and let it adapt to conditions on the fly without fuss.

New for this generation is Land Rover's Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control. This system allows the driver to set a crawl speed up to 20 mph that the SUV will automatically maintain with four comfort level adjustments. Level 4 will slow the SUV down significantly when the road gets rough for a smoother ride, while Level 1 will more or less power over bumps while maintaining speed. This tech, along with hill-descent control, helps the driver focus on steering in tricky trail conditions.

2023 Range Rover Sport Tackles Tarmac and Trail With Plug-In Power

The Range Rover Sport also boasts on-road adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go support and lane-keeping steering assist. Rounding out the suite of available on-road driving aids are blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert with reverse precollision detection, a 360-degree camera system, a rear camera mirror and an adaptive speed limiter that can automatically adjust the cruising speed as the posted limit changes.

Pivi Pro infotainment

Standing proud from the Range Rover Sport's dashboard is the newest version of Land Rover's Pivi Pro infotainment tech, featuring a large, 13.1-inch curved touchscreen flanked by a 13.7-inch digital instrument cluster. The curve on the main display is so subtle that I didn't even notice it until Land Rover pointed it out, but it's there if you look closely. Haptic feedback gives a tactile and audible click when pressing elements on the touch display, but that can (and probably should) be turned off in a menu. For some reason, the haptics on every example I tested introduced a slight but annoying lag in sensitivity. The system feels better overall without it.

Onboard navigation features web-connected traffic data and What3Words integration for destination entry and waypoint identification, which is useful for off-road and trail use but merely a novelty for anywhere with a street address. There's also Amazon Alexa voice assistant support that makes use of the onboard eSIM data connection. Muslim drivers can even add a Qibla pointer to the navigation compass, so they'll know which direction to pray wherever they are in the world. I don't think I've ever seen that option on a vehicle before.

Pivi Pro feels much more responsive and stable than the often buggy previous generation and performed well over almost 300 miles of testing. That said, I did run into few visual map hiccups and the occasional stutter when browsing the menus -- nothing dealbreaking, but still noteworthy given the rock-solid tech found in the Sport's fiercest competitors. Over-the-air update capability may help smooth some of that out over time and, if not, there's always standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay with wireless connectivity to fill in the gaps.

2023 Range Rover Sport Pivi Pro infotainment display

The 13.1-inch touchscreen display's curvature is so subtle that it's barely visible.

Pricing and availability

The 2023 Range Rover Sport is a substantial upgrade over its predecessor, particularly the more powerful plug-in hybrid model with its larger battery and more useful electric range. Even with the minor compromises needed to make a PHEV work efficiently at this size -- and despite how much fun that V8 model can be -- the P440e is my favorite spec of the bunch. But if plugging in isn't your jam, all four available specs are simply better than before with smarter, more stable cabin and safety tech, improved fit and finish, and more refined performance, both on- and off-road.

The 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport starts at $84,475 for the P360 SE when you include the $1,475 destination charge. The more powerful P400 SE Dynamic is a bit more expensive at $91,475, while the P440e's more complex powertrain and Autobiography trim standard features bumps the sticker price to $105,675. At the top of the line is the limited-edition, V8-powered P530 First Edition at $122,975 -- at least, until the fully electric variant joins the lineup sometime in 2024.

A Week With: 2023 Range Rover Sport Autobiography

Aptly named, the range rover sport autobiography is indeed capable of telling its own story..

L. Conrad Bell

Hermetically sealed within the vault-like confines of the 2023 Land Rover Range Rover Sport Autobiography, one gets the impression the outside world moves past the vehicle to bring your destination to you — rather than vice versa.

2023 Range Rover Sport Autobiography nose

Such is the smoothness, comfort and isolation afforded occupants of this, one of the most sybaritic SUVs currently on offer. Simply put, few automobiles provide such a cosseting environment within which to watch the world go bye-bye.

Aptly named, the Range Rover Sport Autobiography is indeed capable of telling its own story. One look at it tells you a significant outlay of the realm’s coinage is required to possess its substantive magnificence.

A complete redesign for the 2023 model year has endowed the more sporting-oriented Range Rover with crisp new exterior styling, a tastefully austere interior makeover and a broad array of contemporary comfort, convenience and driver assistance technologies.

Land Rover’s exterior design team embraced minimalism wholeheartedly with this makeover. The lines are clean, uninterrupted, and curve in all the right places. And yet, despite these subtleties—or perhaps because of them—the look is at once muscular, agile and prestigious, without straying into ostentation.

2023 Range Rover Sport Autobiography side

A brilliant example of the less is more philosophy school of design; there is a decided lack of distracting details to impose ocular arrest. Instead, the look of the Range Rover Sport gently invites your eyes to trace its linearity, then occasionally delights them with gentle well-placed curves.

This design will easily stand the test of time.

Inside, the theme maintains its reliance upon simplicity to express elegance. Buttons and switches are kept to a minimum, while immediate access to functions most likely to be called upon at a moment’s notice is provided.

Remarkably, for a vehicle of this caliber, “my” Ranger Rover Sport’s interior was upholstered with a textile to which Land Rover refers as “Ultrafabric.” Applied to the seats, the dash and the door panels, the cloth conveys a premium look and feel — while simultaneously radiating sustainability.

Combining a precise blend of polished elements with tastefully muted surfacing, the Sport’s overall vibe is one of safety, security and contemporary sophistication.

2023 Range Rover Sport Autobiography engine

Range Rover Sport is offered with three powertrain choices in the U.S for the 2023 model year.

The base selection is a 3.0-liter turbocharged 6 married to a 48-volt hybrid system to produce a total output of 355 horsepower. An upgrade of this system is good for 395 horsepower.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain offering also uses the 3.0-liter inline-6 and ups output to 434 horsepower. Fans of V-8 power can relish in a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8, which conjures 523 horsepower.

The transmission is an 8-speed automatic, regardless of the powerplant chosen. All-wheel drive rounds out each selection. The Range Rover Sport also offers a setup the marque calls its “Stormer Handling Pack.” This adds rear wheel steering and torque vectoring to all of the above.

Safety and Technology

2023 Range Rover Sport Autobiography cockpit

The centerpiece of the dash is a 13.1-inch touchscreen, delivering access to all of the Rover’s infotainment features. Dubbed “PiviPro,” the interface’s graphics are crisp, modern and decidedly upscale in appearance.

According to Land Rover’s reps, the system is capable of controlling everything from navigation to media and vehicle settings. It is also said to learn your habits and personalize your experience in much the same fashion as would an intuitive personal assistant.

A 13.7-inch screen resides in front of the steering wheel to display the Rover’s instrumentation. Reconfigurable, it can also be set to exhibit any additional data one might need to monitor the vehicle’s pertinent functions.

A shelf just below the PiviPro’s screen offers wireless smartphone charging. CarPlay, Android and Alexa compatibility are also offered wirelessly, along with over the air software updates.

Driver assistance tech includes Emergency Braking, a 3D Surround Camera, front and rear parking sensors, Wade Sensing, ClearSight Ground View functions and Maneuvering Lights. Smart Cruise Control, a Driver Condition Monitor, Lane Keep Assist and Traffic Sign Recognition are all standard as well.

Land Rover’s Cabin Air Purification Pro system combines PM2.5 filtration and nanoeTM X technology to mitigate odors, bacteria and allergens, including the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Driving Impressions

“My” Range Rover Sport P440e Autobiography was fitted with the 434-hp plug-in hybrid system, which is capable of traveling up to 48 miles on electricity alone. Setting the RR Sport into motion was effortless for this powertrain with 457 lb-ft or torque at the ready.

Still though, the Range Rover constantly reminds you of its heft and solidity. Even closing the doors requires a bit more effort than other vehicles demand. And yet, the grace and agility the Rover displays when underway is remarkable.

Along with the aforementioned effortless acceleration comes highly accurate steering, albeit somewhat devoid of “feel.” However, the most astonishing aspect of piloting a Range Rover Sport is its sheer agility.

Requests for rapid sequential changes of direction are happily accommodate, with minimal body roll. Further, the brakes give the impression that hauling this nearly 6,000-pound luxuriously outfitted bolide down from triple digit speeds repeatedly won’t stress them at all.

And yet, the Range Rover Sport’s overarching characteristic is unflappable smoothness. Ride quality is pleasant under every circumstance and the fact that the Rover manages this while fitted with a set of 22-inch wheels is nothing less than astonishing.

2023 Range Rover Sport Autobiography Specifications

Frankly, it’s a crying shame that the vast majority of the buyers of these vehicles will never apply them to their full potential. Well, that is, other than the “look what I got” demographic.

Sadly though, those are also the very people will never call upon the RR Sport’s sheer and utter competence off road, nor its performance potential on pavement.

On the other hand, all the factors that make it so good in those areas also make it one of the safest family vehicles you can buy.

So, at least there’s that.

2023 Range Rover Sport Autobiography — Frequently Asked Questions

Is the range rover sport a reliable vehicle.

Land Rover finished in 14th place out of 29 brands in the 2022 J.D. Power owner satisfaction survey (however, that  was  up from 22nd in 2021).

Is a Range Rover better than a Range Rover Sport?

The two vehicles are aimed at a very different demographic. Range Rover Sport targets those who value performance and agility, who also want a comfortable and luxurious experience. The Range Rover, while also quite capable in those regards, is decidedly more luxurious in nature.

Why are Range Rovers so desirable?

Aside from their unadulterated prestige factor, Range Rover’s models are among the most capable offroad vehicles sold. That they are capable of accomplishing this, while also delivering an unequivocally first-class driver and passenger experience, sets them apart from most other automobiles.

The 2023 Range Rover Sport

The most popular Range Rover in the America just got a makeover.

The third generation in the Sport series arrived on Tuesday, and at first blush, it looks to be the taut, muscular and modern SUV that Range Rover loyalists would expect. The model’s sleek body, which has been refined for this edition, is matched by performance specs that should get even seasoned Range Rover drivers excited.

For 2023, the Sport is being offered in four trim levels: a mild-hybrid SE and SE Dynamic, a plug-in hybrid Autobiography, and the gas-powered First Edition. The V-8 twin-turbo engine in that last one will get you a whopping 523 hp and allow acceleration from zero to 60 in just 4.3 seconds. But the other models aren’t too shabby either. The two SEs provide either 355 or 395 horses, according to Car and Driver , while the Autobiography can produce 434 hp. Additionally, the plug-in hybrid is able to go from zero to 60 in 5.5 seconds and has an estimated range of 48 miles.

All of the 2023 editions offer rear-axle steering that can turn the back wheels up to 7.3 degrees, as well as adaptive off-road cruise control, both of which should serve to make the SUV easier to maneuver.

The rear features a sculpted tailgate.  Land Rover

Outside, the legendary silhouette remains, of course. The minimalist grille anchors the front fascia, with clean lines that flow back to a sculpted tailgate. The exterior differs from that of its predecessors in some pretty major ways, though. The overhangs are shorter in front and longer in back, and both the headlights and grille openings are slimmer. While 21-inch rims are standard, the Sport can come with larger, 23-inch versions. All in all, the SUV has a slightly more elegant appearance, helped along by added features such as flush-mounted door handles, Satin Grey wheels, and Satin Burnished Copper finishes.

The cabin has a 13-inch touchscreen to control infotainment options.  Land Rover

Inside, meanwhile, the cabin has a cockpit-like feel, allowing for a driving perch that’s both dynamic and plush (especially when you factor in the heated and massaging front seats). The Sport’s platform is now 35 percent stiffer and its wheelbase was extended by three inches, providing about an inch of extra legroom in the rear seats. Lightweight Ultrafabrics can be swapped for Windsor or soft semi-aniline leather options, all of which pair nicely with the Moonlight Chrome finishes. And the technology is no slouch, either: The Meridian sound system is the most advanced in any Range Rover Sport; active noise cancellation allows you to focus on what you most want to hear; and a 13-inch touchscreen on the dash provides control at the tip of a finger.

“The exceptional new Range Rover Sport sets new standards as the ultimate sporting luxury SUV,” Thierry Bolloré, the CEO of Jaguar Land Rover , said in a statement. “It is the latest embodiment of our vision to create the world’s most desirable modern luxury vehicles, effortlessly blending new levels of sustainability with the signature qualities that have made Range Rover Sport so popular.”

If all of this gets your gears turning, the third-gen Range Rover Sport is available to order now, starting at $83,000. An all-electric version will become available in 2024.

New 2023 Range Rover: SV Bespoke service updated and new powertrains added

The new flagship range rover gets more powerful plug-in hybrid versions.

autobiography range rover sport 2023

We waited a while for the latest Range Rover with the old model’s lifespan extending to almost a decade. That shouldn’t be surprising though because in more than 50 years there have only been four generations of the most luxurious Land Rover . The latest Range Rover model has already received a few tweaks for 2023 to keep it ahead of the game.

The fifth-generation car is a significant step for Land Rover. Not least because the British brand’s iconic luxury SUV will be available as a plug-in hybrid and with seven seats for the first time.

Best luxury SUVs - header image

The new Range Rover is priced from £103,720, and is the first model on the British brand’s new MLA-Flex platform, which allows for pure combustion-engined powertrains, plug-in hybrid tech and fully electric propulsion – and on that front, a Range Rover EV has been confirmed for 2024.

Range Rover has also announced several new powertrains for 2023, alongside a revised selection of SV Bespoke services, allowing for greater personalisation.

New 2023 Range Rover: engines, power and performance

The arrival of the new Range Rover saw fresh technology feature in its plug-in hybrid options. Two plug-in hybrid models of the new Range Rover were initially available - the P440e and the P510e model, however, these have already been replaced by more powerful versions - the P460e and the P550e.

New Range Rover 2022 review

Both PHEVs use a 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged petrol engine in tandem with a 217bhp (up from 141bhp in the P440e and P510e) electric motor. The detuned P460e puts out a total of 453bhp and the P550e has 542bhp - up from 503bhp in the P510e. Range Rover claims the 0-62mph time for the P550e stands at five seconds flat - half a second quicker than the P510e.

Both variants will offer up to 75 miles of range on electric power only (with an expect real-word range of 59 miles). CO2 emissions have also been slightly improved for the PHEVs with 16g/km in hybrid drive mode. 50kW DC rapid charging enables a 0-80 per cent recharge of the battery in under an hour.

Alongside fully electric EV mode, there’s a choice of Hybrid mode – the default setting, which combines both power sources and uses predictive energy optimisation tech, as well as geofencing to ensure electric propulsion is available in low emissions zones, for example – and Save mode. This latter setting retains a programmable state of charge for deployment later in the driver’s journey.

Land Rover has also introduced SV versions of the new Range Rover, with the new range-topping specification available in short- or long-wheelbase form. Hybrid power can now be optioned on SV models.

Mild-hybrid tech also features in the engine line-up, with a 394bhp 3.0-litre petrol (0-62mph in 5.8 seconds, 29.7mpg combined and 215g/km of CO2), as well as two diesel options. The 3.0-litre straight-six-engined D300 and D350 model offer 296bhp and 345bhp respectively, with up to 37.2mpg possible and CO2 emissions from 198g/km.

There’s also a new 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol unit which is now mated to a mild-hybrid system to help boost power from 523bhp to 607bhp, with the same 750Nm torque output. With the Dynamic Launch system we expect the range-topping model to sprint from 0-62mph in under 4.6 seconds, while top speed should continue to be limited to 155mph.

Range Rover - rear

All powertrains are mated to an eight-speed automatic gearbox with low-range capability and Land Rover’s four-wheel drive system with Terrain Response 2 tech that tailors the drivetrain to different surfaces, while the new Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system can decouple the front axle on-road between 21mph and 100mph to improve efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 4g/km.

New 2023 Range Rover: design

With a household name like Range Rover, it makes sense you wouldn’t want to tweak the visual elements too much. It’s certainly a modern evolution of the Range Rover’s styling. At the front, the grille has been refreshed with a new-look pattern, the standard digital LED headlights are sharper, and most of the car’s sensors for its driver assistance systems have been incorporated into a panel lower down in the bumper to give a smoother, cleaner look. This also helps to reduce drag and improve aerodynamic efficiency.

According to Land Rover’s Design Director, Massimo Frascella, the new Range Rover’s design is all about reductionism, reducing the lines and joints in the body to give a new, more understated take on modern luxury .

With this in mind, no Range Rover will wear an engine or trim level boot badge, while alternatives to leather will be offered in the form of Kvadrat technical Ultrafabric to improve sustainability. However, leather will still be offered as standard.

Land Rover’s design reductionism is clear at the rear, where the biggest styling changes for the new car can be seen. The tail-lights and indicators have been incorporated into a solid-looking black panel that is opaque when the lights aren’t on.

In profile, the Range Rover is still defined by three clear horizontal lines. The first below the doors that now sweeps upwards towards the rear, the second runs back from the clamshell bonnet and is sharper and tighter than before, while the third separates the model’s trademark floating roof.

It's not the only design detail that has been retained, as the new Range Rover still boasts a split tailgate, while the door inserts have evolved to a U-shaped design. Alloy wheels between 20 and 23 inches will be available depending on spec.

Interior, technology and practicality

This fifth-generation Range Rover will be the first that offers seating for seven. The new car comes in five-seat standard wheelbase form, while if you opt for the long wheelbase variant you can specify a third row of seats.

The LWB model adds an extra 200mm between the car’s axles, facilitating the new seating configuration. We tried the third row at the car’s unveiling and, while there’s not as much room as in the brand’s larger Discovery , there’s still enough space for children and adults on shorter journeys.

Improved torsional rigidity (up to 50 per cent) from the new aluminium-intensive platform means Land Rover’s engineers have been able to increase the door aperture size to improve access, which is reasonable.

SWB models can be had with five seats, while if you go for the Executive Class Seating pack, this comes with four seats. The individual chairs in the rear are available on SWB and LWB cars, improving knee room by 44mm; there’s up to one metre of legroom on four-seat LWB models.

Range Rover - dash

This package also adds an eight-inch touchscreen controller in the back to tune the rear cabin environment, while the rear seats recline by up to 25 degrees to add even more comfort and refinement. If you want the seven-seat layout you’re restricted to LWB form, although there are heated seats in all rows, while the rows are also tiered to improve visibility the further back you sit and fold electrically at the touch of a button.

2023 sees the Range Rover adopt Land Rover’s latest Pivi Pro infotainment system. It still uses the same gently curved 13.1-inch touchscreen on the dash, but ‘Country Road Assist technology’ has been added, along with revised off-road cruise control.

The brand says 90 per cent of tasks are accessible in just two steps from the home screen, while there’s also more connectivity than ever before, with over-the-air software update capability, Amazon Alexa integration, Spotify and, of course, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with wireless connections for both programmes.

There’s a 13.7-inch digital dash panel, while as you’d expect in a luxury car, buyers can opt for a Rear Seat Entertainment package, which adds a pair of 11.4-inch HD touchscreens mounted on the front seatbacks.

There’s 15w wireless phone charging on offer, as well as up to 60w of power to charge devices by USB C; if this isn’t enough there’s also a 230v socket available.

The new MLA-Flex platform is also loaded with clever technology to improve refinement, ride comfort and capability on and off-road.

Along with the six off-road pre-sets for the Terrain Response 2 system there’s also a Wade mode, which raises the body to give a 900mm wading depth, while the next-generation suspension set-up allows for up to 510mm of wheel travel to help boost off-road ability, a Range Rover calling card.

On-road, Land Rover’s Dynamic Response Pro 48v active anti-roll tech helps to keep the car level in corners, improving stability and comfort for passengers, especially at high speed.

There’s active noise cancellation with five times the range of previous systems and electronic air suspension with pre-emptive tech that uses navigation data to set the car up for the road ahead. All-wheel steering is standard, turning the rear wheels in the opposite direction to the fronts by up to seven degrees at low speed to give the more than five-metre-long Range Rover a 10.95-metre turning circle, less than most superminis .

On top of this, cabin storage has been optimised, with lots more clever trays and bins to store items, while boot space stands at 725 litres in both five-seat SWB and LWB form. Go for the seven-seat car and there’s 312 litres with all rows in place, rising to 713 litres with the third row folded down.

There are a maximum 1,841 litres available in the SWB car and 2,601 litres on offer in the LWB model with all seats stowed away.

Range Rover SV models offer more personalisation

Land Rover is revealing the Range Rover SV models alongside the standard car, with this ultra-luxurious option gaining more personalisation potential and different design details.

Range Rover - side

The luxury SUV maker has also introduced new levels of personalisation for 2023. 391 colourways are offered for the interior, with a specially curated SV Bespoke paint service can replicate any paint requests if the 230 original options aren’t enough. Customers can visit the SV Bespoke Commissioning Suite to help create a more personal Range Rover.

Available in SWB form, as well as four or five-seat LWB configurations, the brand is offering two SV design themes: SV Serenity and SV Intrepid. The former features a metal-plated finish for the grille in Atlas Silver, as well as Corinthian Bronze accents, including the door inserts. The Range Rover lettering is also in Corinthian Bronze with Silver Satin surrounds.

The Serenity them has been designed to showcase the car’s elegance and features mosaic-pattern embroidery inside, as well as lighter two-tone upholstery choices.

On the other hand, the SV Intrepid theme is a sportier, more driver-focused look and features dark Anthracite finishes in place of Serenity’s bronze trim, while inside there’s also a sportier focus to the single or dual-tone leather trim. Of course, buyers can specify their car’s interior in any way they’d like.

All SV models feature ceramic badging outside, including an SV moniker on the tailgate, while inside these cool ceramic details are carried through to the main touchpoints, including the gear selector, Terrain Response dial and the volume knob.

For ultimate luxury buyers can opt for the SV Signature Suite, which only comes in four-seat configuration and adds a raised centre console that flows through to the rear of the car. This houses a retractable table in the centre, as well as a fridge for drinks and two crystal champagne glasses in between the rear seats.

New 2023 Range Rover: specs

From launch the new Range Rover was available in SE, HSE, Autobiography and SV trim levels, as well as a First Edition model that will be on sale for the first year of production.

Prices did start from £94,400 for the D300 SE car, but have now risen to £103,720. Above this sits the HSE, which starts from £110,050. Both the SE and HSE can be had with D350 and P400 powertrains. The P460e kicks off the plug-in hybrid range, with the P550e sitting above it.

There’s no word yet on pricing for the fully-electric Range Rover, but we expect it to be one of the more expensive versions you can buy.

This Plug-In Hybrid SUV Offers More Than 50 Miles Of All-Electric Range

If you want an efficient PHEV SUV that offers the best all-electric range, you'll have to shell out over $100,000.

  • Forget about compromising with a PHEV - Land Rover's Range Rover P550e Autobiography offers an astounding 51 miles of all-electric range.
  • Land Rover's jump into the PHEV game in 2022/2023 was met with impressive results - stunning design paired with an incredible performance.
  • The new Range Rover PHEV is a powerhouse with a standard 3.0-liter engine producing 542 HP, 590 lb-ft torque, and boasting 51 miles of all-electric range.

In recent years, the plug-in hybrid market has been exploding with interest, investment, and engineering. Adding to the benefits of a hybrid vehicle, PHEVs offer the charging and battery-powered components of an EV many people have become curious about. With a plug-in hybrid, you get to enjoy the luxury of gas and electric movement, together or separately.

There are many models that will boast 30-40 miles of all-electric range, although this doesn't prove to be enough for most drivers. After all, the idea of a PHEV is to cut back on emissions and fuel consumption. If you only get ~30 miles of electric range, that may not be enough to warrant the jump from hybrid to plug-in hybrid powertrain.

That being said, there are a few particular plug-in hybrids that have much more than 30 or even 40 miles. One brand that has dominated this space out of surprise is Land Rover, creating the perfect (and powerful) British luxury SUV . It's not every day you have a brand swing and make it on the first try, so to see the Range Rover plug-in do this well right out the gate is assuring.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from Land Rover.

2024 Range Rover Sport Dynamic SE P400 Review: The "Lite" Version for Those Who Deem the Full-Size Too Big

An underdog in the phev market: the range rover p550e autobiography.

One of the more surprising winners in today's plug-in hybrid market is Land Rover. With its Range Rover PHEV series, we see up to 51 miles before its 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine needs to kick in. This puts the British luxury automaker in a great position to overtake the luxury PHEV segment, and with this model's high power, elegance, and price point, there's an exclusive feel to it we appreciate.

In today's plug-in world, most nameplates travel around 30 to 40 miles in all-electric mode. With the Range Rover PHEV, you see quite a bump up from this average. It's also worth mentioning that the Range Rover plug-in boasts a standard 3.0-liter engine capable of producing 542 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. It's fast, quiet, and eco-friendly. What else could we ask for?

2024 Range Rover PHEV Specifications

It's also worth mentioning that the PHEV version of the P550e is exclusive to the fancy Autobiography trim. It pairs an electric motor with the inline-six engine and boasts an eight-speed automatic transmission, standard all-wheel drive, and an adjustable air suspension system.

10 Things To Know About The Land Rover Range Rover Plug-in Hybrid

Why land rover popped out of nowhere.

Regarding when, where, and how Land Rover jumped into the plug-in hybrid game, this all started in 2022/2023, and the series debuted as a higher trim (Autobiography) for a standard ICE vehicle. Land Rover chose to offer the PHEV Range Rover in addition to a regular gas-only version, which has allowed customers to slowly move to it versus having to do so right away.

As a luxury auto manufacturer, Land Rover has had to trickle in electric design through thoughtfully designed and executed vehicle releases. The luxury car segment can be unforgiving, and when people see an immediate change in engine configuration, it can turn them away from new ideas. Considering this vehicle now trumps the PHEV market for its impeccable range and performance features, we'd agree Land Rover and its Range Rover family are doing a perfect job of executing change.

For those interested in the Land Rover Range Rover PHEV, this model is also quite impressive in the MPG and MPGe departments. Although the EPA has not rated the 2024 nameplate, the official stats per LR are:

2024 Range Rover Sport Autobiography (PHEV) Fuel Economy

You can see that as MPG (gas only), the Autobiography trim is a bit lackluster. However, the second you incorporate electricity into your everyday driving routine, that's when things get exciting. From these official figures, Land Rover has essentially promised ~53 miles of all-electric range combined. However, you can expect closer to 50 on average, with 51 being the quoted EV range across dealers and government agency websites. Whatever the case, for a fairly new PHEV to surpass 50 miles of plug-in range is wild. We haven't seen anyone else do it as of yet, so hats off to Land Rover.

Quick Charge Times, Quicker Acceleration

In addition to being quite the speedster in terms of HP, the Land Rover Range Rover PHEV is a boss when tested in 0-60 MPH timeframes and when charging. For 0-60 MPH test times, you can expect this SUV to hit 60 miles in 4.8 seconds, plus see complete charging in as little as an hour. At Level 2, your PHEV will charge for about 4-5 hours to reach 80 percent, and fast charging stations put it at a whopping 60 minutes of total plug-in time. Whatever you choose, you won't be waiting long.

Land Rover Range Rover: Pricing And Features By Trim Level

Land rover takes on a more electric approach.

In addition to the Range Rover Autobiography PHEV, the company has announced that an all-electric version of its iconic SUV is coming. This will be about the same size and design as the PHEV but will ditch the gas engine. We're seeing this trend grow across the market, luxury or not, and Land Rover has the chance to continue impressing us with its design and engineering prowess.

Of course, for now, we see the PHEV being offered throughout North America and offering the highest all-electric hybrid electric range on the market as of 2024. That's a title the British mega-brand proudly holds. Even though we don't have many electric options as of now through Land Rover/Range Rover, that won't continue to be the case once some of these new and concept vehicles hit production lines.

The all-electric Range Rover does not have any official specs on the internet, but its range will play a big role in its success. If we can mimic the PHEV power of the nameplate, this should be a defining release for the company.

The Autobiography Trim Is The Perfect Spot For A Plug-In Hybrid

If there's one thing we'll say about the Range Rover P550e Autobiography trim, it's that this SUV offers much more than just a PHEV configuration. To be specific, you can expect luxurious interior and exterior features, like leather-appointed seats, deluxe trim and steering wheel wrapping, infotainment with you in mind, driver-assistance technology, a smooth quiet ride experience, a 3.0-liter six-cylinder Ingenium gasoline engine has a 160-kW-motor fitted to the P550e variant, and DC fast charging that can get your battery from 0-80 percent in under an hour. The Range Rover PHEV is a force to be reckoned with, through and through.

The Range Rover Electric Is Set To Have V-8 Levels Of Power And Performance

Just because it's a phev doesn't mean it can't pack an electric punch.

When it comes to driving a hybrid or plug-in model, this shouldn't mean having to compromise. With even the better hybrid makers (Toyota, Honda, etc.) unable to surpass the 50-mile all-electric range on their PHEVs in 2024, we should look to Land Rover for inspiration. Of course, these models costing well over six figures may explain some of the performance enhancements, but who's to say the brand can't someday make its plug-in models 100+ miles.

We know the all-electric Range Rover is coming to North America and Europe shortly, so let's hope the brand spends some time perfecting what it already does so good at. The Autobiography trim has been a decent launch point for Range Rover SUVs, but it's only the beginning of a much stronger, broader rollout from the auto manufacturer.

Plug-in Hybrid SUV With The Highest All-electric Range In 2024

As the Jaguar Land Rover group prepares for its all-electric future in the coming years, the British marque has begun rolling out an extensive electrified line-up with some impressive all-electric range claims. The all-new Range Rover Sport P550e enters the competitive PHEV SUV realm as the champion, with a class-leading range claim. The new-generation L461 Sport sits on JLR's MLA-Fex platform, which it designed specifically for full electrification.

The P550e is the top-of-the-range PHEV option and the only hybrid derivative available in the U.S. It replaces the short-lived P440e, but introduces a higher specification, more power, and improved EV capabilities, albeit at a much higher price point. Most luxury carmakers are heavily investing in electrification, but it looks like JLR's unwavering dedication to disbanding the ICE motivates it to create class-leading PHEV options.

UPDATE: 2024/05/04

New and relevant information has been included to bring this article up to date, including updated links and related information. This also includes adding alternative and less expensive vehicles.

In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from Range Rover's websites and other authoritative sources, including the EPA, Car And Driver, and Edmunds.

Photo Gallery: First Spy Shots Reveal The 2025 Land Rover Electric SUV

The range rover sport p550e hybrid covers over 50 miles in electric-only mode.

The EPA still needs to test the Range Rover Sport P550e, so we don't have realistic consumption and battery electric range estimates. Range Rover claims that its 31.8 kWh battery is enough to drive the SUV 53 miles before you need to plug it in for recharging.

The previous P440e boasts a 51-mile EPA range estimate. The model features the company's AJ300 twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter straight-six and permanent-magnet electric motor driving all four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Performance Specifications

(Data sourced from Range Rover)

This system generates a combined 542 horsepower and 516 pound-feet, resulting in a claimed 4.7-second 0-60 MPH time and 150-MPH top speed. The P550e is an all-new model yet to be tested by reputable publications, so we don't have a realistic indication of how it performs in real-world conditions. For reference, tests reveal the non-hybrid P360 to accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 5.7 seconds, but this only produces 355 horsepower.

The Range Rover Sport P550e Costs $118,200

Range Rover's decision to make its PHEV option a flagship Autobiography trim results in an eye-watering $118,200 starting price, making it significantly more expensive than its European and American rivals. The trade-off is an impressive specification and a near-unrivaled in-cabin luxury experience. Range Rovers are traditionally more expensive options that bridge the gap between premium European manufacturers and more high-end marques from the likes of Bentley and Rolls-Royce.

Add TopSpeed to your Google News feed.

Google News

The Sport is a more compact variation of the Range Rover , which is also available with the P550e powertrain, boasting a $141,100 starting price. This model is just a bit slower than the Sport, but it boasts similar EV range claims. This information is redundant, however, as Range Rover has already sold its entire P550e allocation in the USA.

The Range Rover Sport P550e Can Tow Up To 6,614 Pounds

The Range Rover Sport appears as an urban crawler, but the brand ensures it has enough gusto to do some hard work as well. The turbocharged PHEV system boasts an impressive, but not class-leading, 6,614-pound towing capacity , and 1,576 payload limit. Its trunk size is 29.5 cubic feet. To make the most of the Range Rover Sport's towing abilities, you'll have to fit the $750 tow hitch receiver and the $450 Advanced Tow Assist package.

You can make the most of its decent payload abilities via various storage and cargo packages. This includes a $5,000 Equestrian Pack, which adds an array of trimmings and equipment you can use for an enjoyable ride across the countryside on your horse. There's also a Convenience Pack, which adds powered gesture control to the tailgate and a cargo space partition net.

2023 Range Rover Sport: Performance, Price, and Photos

The range rover sport offers a luxurious cabin experience.

The Range Rover Sport's MLA-Flex chassis results in some generous interior space, with the front row accommodating 38.8 inches of headroom, 40.3 inches of legroom, and 60.8 inches of shoulder room. The rear features 39 inches of headroom, 37.7 inches of legroom, and 59.1 inches of shoulder room. If you want to carry some larger items, you can fold the second row down to increase cargo space to 65.7 cubic feet.

Interior Dimensions

Range Rover prioritizes luxury in the Sport's cabin, as the Autobiography trim lays host to perforated Semi-Aniline leather upholstery, natural black wood veneer, and suede cloth headlining. Sportier or more luxurious finishes are optionally available. Range Rover's catalog is famously diverse , so there is a lot of potential to create a truly individual and unique specification.

Warranty And Reliability

Range Rovers are famous for their undependable mechanical components. Thus far, the Sport appears to embrace a more reliable reputation , as the 2024 model only has one recall attached to it , relating to improperly bonded body panels. Considering its extreme price and poor reputation, Range Rover's standard warranty is a bit of a let-down.

As standard, you get a full warranty covering 48 months or 50,000 miles. This includes all powertrain defects with roadside assistance. It covers corrosion for 72 months over unlimited miles, but its hybrid battery warranty sits way below the industry standard at 72 months or 60,000 miles.

The Range Rover Sport P550e Takes Six Hours To Charge

The Range Rover Sport's 31.8 kWh lithium-ion battery benefits from the MLA-Flex's 160 kW output, affording it impressive charging times for a PHEV. Using a Level One household plug at 110 volts, the battery takes just under six hours to recharge from empty to full. A 240-volt Level Two system takes 3.8 hours.

The Range Rover Sport P550e is one of the very few plug-in hybrids that you can charge using a DC Level Three fast charger . It is limited to 50 kW, so it'll take a full hour to recover 10 to 80 percent of the charge. The Range Rover Sport P550e comes standard with a portable charging cable. The brand offers licensed Level Two wallboxes , which we recommend if you plan to make full use of the car's electrical abilities.

Plug-in Hybrid Alternatives

The Range Rover Sport P550e may be the best plug-in hybrid vehicle available right now, but that doesn't mean there aren't other options out there, especially when it comes to pricing. There are other options from premium brands that are almost as good as the Range Rover and cost half the price. A few examples are:

Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid: $100,750

The Cayenne is one of the best luxury SUVs on the market and adding a plug-in hybrid solidifies that notion. While there is a more powerful turbo model, that one is also more expensive, and doesn't offer more range, so the S E-hybrid is the perfect choice. It is the closest competition to the P550e in terms of powertrain and electric range.

Mercedes GLE 450e: $69,500

This packs the full suite of features expected of a Mercedes product with a hybrid powertrain. It has a good electric range of almost 50 miles and has the lowest starting price.

BMW X5 xDrive50e: $73,100

This is currently the only midsize plug-in SUV available from BMW , and it fits right in with this competition. It was refreshed in 2023 and received improvements in many areas, including a new larger battery, but managed to weigh 150 pounds lighter than its pre-facelift model. This is another solid alternative to the Range Rover.

Volvo XC90 Recharge: $71,900

Apart from the Range Rover, this should be one of the best-looking SUVs on sale. Volvo is known to be at the forefront of safety tech and the XC90 Recharge is no different. It also has three-row seating and is easily the most practical hybrid SUV available. It has one of the smallest batteries here, but with an EV range of 42 miles, you're good to go, but it does have the longest charging time.

Lexus RX450h+: $70,580

Some people may want a luxury car, but they also want a brand that's known for reliability and this is where the RX comes in. Lexus has had great success with this midsize SUV with repeat customers, so it only makes sense to give them a version with better fuel efficiency. But it has the smallest battery with the least range and costs as much as the competition.
