Extracurricular Activities: A Comprehensive Guide with 400+ Examples, Ideas, & Opportunities

On average, American students spend about 1195 hours per year in the classroom (with some variation from state to state). Assuming you’re spending about 8 hours a day sleeping (which, ideally, you are—your brain needs it), that leaves about 4645 hours in a year outside of school and sleep.

That’s a lot of time. (Maybe more than you thought?)

We’d highly recommend spending some of it doing extracurricular activities. (Which, considering how broad that term is, you already do.)

But since questions about extracurricular activities are some of the most common we get from students and families—for example, how do colleges evaluate extracurriculars, or are some “more valuable” than others, or even just “What are my options?”—we wanted to build a comprehensive guide for you.

So here it is.

“Extracurricular activities” is an umbrella term used to describe pretty much anything a student does with their time outside of coursework, minus a few exceptions, like chores, errands, or essential life functions. Sometimes you’ll see them written as “co-curricular activities” (meaning that they’re pursued alongside coursework as part of a typical high school experience) or “after-school activities.” But they all basically mean the same thing: areas of recreation or engagement or responsibility outside of your classes.

Most U.S. high schools don’t actually require students to participate in extracurricular activities (minus community service hours, which are a part of many high schools’ graduation requirements). That said, most high school students— 60-80%, according to various national surveys — are involved in at least one extracurricular activity. The most common are athletics/sports, the arts, school-based clubs, and community service, but these are just really scratching the surface when it comes to the ways you can spend your time as a high school student (either in or out of school).

And, no, cleaning your room, riding the bus to school, brushing your teeth, or sleeping are not extracurricular activities. (Though I’ve definitely seen a few college applications that have cheekily tried to frame this as such)

If you’re trying to figure out if something you do with your time “counts” as an extracurricular activity, ask yourself these three basic questions:

Is it a part of my high school classes?

Is it a normal and/or essential human function that’s required for me to stay healthy and alive?

Is it something that I do infrequently or in a one-off manner, and that isn’t a clear form of community service/volunteering? (I.e., planning a friend’s surprise birthday party isn’t an extracurricular activity. Volunteering once for a local blood drive is.)

If the answer is “no” to each, congratulations: you may have an extracurricular activity on your hands!

(Of course, some people with a flair for the dramatic may say things like “I’d be dead if I couldn’t play soccer,” but so long as you keep the hyperbole reigned in, the simple formula above will serve you well).

To get a little more granular, here are the 27 categories that the Common Application (aka the application used by 1,000+ U.S. colleges) include as part of their Activities section (click on each to zoom down to the section discussing it)

The United States’ approach to higher education is pretty unusual compared to the approach in other parts of the world. For most students who attend a four-year college or university, there’s an expectation that they are contributing to a residential community beyond solely taking classes and getting a degree.

What makes this residential community attractive, fun and fulfilling for students? Well, all-you-can-eat dining halls, pretty buildings covered with ivy, and, er… “weekend social activities” can certainly play a role.

But extracurricular activities are the primary way that U.S. college students find peers with common interests and identities, exciting and enjoyable recreation outside of their classes, and a sense of belonging on their college campus.

Colleges—particularly more selective ones—often voice that they are not solely admitting students. They’re admitting community members who can contribute to their campus community in meaningful ways. (For more on what colleges look for in students , check out that guide + analysis.)

Thus, students who’ve demonstrated engagement with activities outside of their classes and share those with colleges as part of their application are more likely to be attractive candidates. 

Here’s some data that provides some insight into how much extracurricular activities “weigh” in a student’s college application process:

What does this data tell us? 

That the vast majority of colleges and universities in the U.S. see extracurricular activities as “moderately important” to their admissions process. Also, these numbers haven’t changed much over the 10-or-so years NACAC has been conducting this survey, meaning that there isn’t necessarily exorbitantly more pressure for students to stack their resume as the admissions landscape continues to evolve (despite myths and misunderstandings about the application process you may hear). 

Colleges are, first and foremost, tasked with admitting academically qualified students who are able to complete their degree requirements and graduate on time. Thus, it’s important to remember that extracurricular activities can’t replace or “make up for” an academic record that a college deems non-competitive. 

That said, it’s pretty clear that they still make a difference in a student’s application process, and are something worth folding into your high school experience if you want to have the widest range of college options available to you. 

In particular, a student’s extracurricular profile can impact admissions at highly selective colleges.

The small sampling of colleges that see extracurricular activities as “considerably important” in their admissions process—that 6.5% in the data above—are more highly selective colleges, according to David Hawkins, Chief Education and Policy Officer at National Association of College Admission Counselors (aka NACAC) . 

These are schools where, on average, 80% of the applicant pool is academically admissible . Thus, standing out through other means—like a high-impact extracurricular profile—is good to be thinking about if you’re targeting these types of colleges.

The Common Application’s Activities section has historically provided students with space for 10 extracurricular activities. Given this, it may be tempting to think you have to be involved in 10-or-so activities to be a competitive college applicant. 

Not true! 

According to the Common App themselves , the majority of applicants include 5-7 activities in their application. 

While even that number can seem pretty high on the surface, keep in mind that this figure includes past activities (things that a student may have stepped away from after their 9th or 10th-grade years to focus on things they cared more about) and/or “one-off” activities (summer programs, camps, trips, leadership institutes, etc.).

In our experience, we’ve found that the most successful college applicants are usually involved in 3-4 “core” extracurricular activities .

For instance, a typical high-achieving student might be involved in 

a fall and spring sport

the annual school musical

a community service club (where they do most of their service work on the weekends)

a handful of one-off activities (research or a self-directed project during their junior year summer, a leadership institute for one week during a school break, etc.) 

Another student might 

write articles for the school newspaper

work a part-time job

lead their school’s Black Student Union, and 

attend (and eventually become a counselor at) summer camp each year 

These are “doable” extracurricular schedules that many admissions officers are used to seeing and won’t siphon away too much time away from your studies, which you’ll need to prioritize first and foremost to be a successful college applicant .

Key takeaway: Focusing on 3-4 long-term activities—and perhaps a few isolated short-term ones like research, internships, and self-directed projects—will help you develop many of the valued qualities that colleges hope to see in applicants: initiative, impact, consistency, and commitment. 

Spreading yourself too thin and trying to “stack your resume” with a lot of activities for the sake of “impressing colleges” may result in you feeling burnt out, struggling to prioritize your academics, and unable to carve out opportunities to demonstrate leadership (which many colleges highly value).

Some students feel so much pressure to get into the “right” college that they want to make sure they do everything right—down to their extracurricular activities. We ask for only four activities on our application because we want to know what you are passionate about, what is most important to you—not what you think we want to see.

As you move through high school and develop more clarity around what you value and how you want to prioritize your time, keep this “core 4” philosophy in mind. Doing so will not only allow you to have the most fun and gain the most satisfaction from your activities—it’ll also provide you with the extracurricular profile that most colleges are eager to see.

Transitioning from middle school to high school involves quite a learning curve—academically and otherwise. One area that’s both fun and maybe intimidating is choosing extracurricular activities, which are usually much more plentiful and varied on the high school level. 

Many younger students are often involved in activities—such as a sport and/or music or art lessons—that were influenced and/or organized by their parents. High school is the time to take a little more ownership and independence when deciding how to spend your time, or balancing commitments you need to prioritize (such as work and/or family responsibilities) with ones that excite you and leave you feeling fulfilled.

While every student’s high school journey is unique, here’s some general guidance—organized by grade level—with some suggestions that can help you approach your extracurricular planning with ease, purpose and joy:

Ah, high school. The bodies roaming the halls are bigger. The locker room is (probably) smellier. And everything just seems… more .

Getting adjusted to this big, bad new world is your primary job as a bright-eyed 9th grader. Once you start to get your footing with your new academic schedule and culture, shifting your focus towards some of the ways you can get involved outside of class, start to make new friends, and identify like-minded peers will help you feel more at home in your new environment.

Now, what exactly does “the year of the dabble” mean? It means it's time to explore. Think of yourself as an extracurricular explorer, venturing into the unknown territories of clubs, sports, arts, and beyond.

To start your dabbling first, ask yourself: What did I enjoy most in middle school outside of my classes (or unstructured recess) ? 

Did you love tinkering with machines in the robotics club? 

Or maybe you found your rhythm in the school band? 

Whatever it was, consider continuing with those activities and finding parallel opportunities at your new school (or potentially with out-of-school opportunities).

At the same time, high school might provide the symbolic “closing of a chapter” you’ve been waiting to step away from. 

If you’ve found yourself, for instance, “peaking” and feeling uninspired by the piano lessons you started as a 9 year old, maybe it’s time to leave those keys behind and unlock something new. This is a particularly mature viewpoint if you don’t find yourself enjoying the activity all that much AND you don’t see yourself rising to the level of a top contributor to a music ensemble, sports team, or the like. Spending countless hours for the sake of consistency—and at the sacrifice of more exciting possibilities that you’ll inevitably learn a lot more from—is not typically an “order of operations” or decision-making matrix we recommend.

Lastly, many high schools offer an upperclassman “buddy” type of program (such as Link Crew) for you to learn more about the nuances of your high school: from course offerings, to favorite teachers (very “don’t sit in the front row of Ms. Traeger’s class!” vibes), to, yes, extracurricular opportunities.

Be sure to take advantage of the wisdom of these older students, who have volunteered their time to be a resource to you (yes, we know it can be intimidating sometimes to talk with the big bad seniors, but the more you can learn to advocate for yourself and leverage resources available to you, the easier your high school experience—and life—will be). 

In addition, you may also want to see if you can meet with a school counselor or a homeroom teacher/advisor to share more about yourself, your interests, and ask for recommendations about ways to get involved.

Speaking of belts: you may be thinking something like “hmm… I’m starting to feel like my middle school goal of getting my black belt in karate is way less exciting than auditioning for Jean Valjean in Les Mis .” 

Cue 10th grade, AKA sophomore year, AKA the year of the filter.

After dabbling your first year, it's time to think about how you want to "filter" your activities down. The goal here is to avoid spreading yourself too thin and instead, aim for consistency and depth in your high school experiences.  

Ideally, you want to narrow it down to 3-4 long-term activities (If you missed it, see the “How many high school extracurricular activities should I participate in?” section above for more on why). 

And, as you filter through your extracurricular options, keep in mind the importance of rising in leadership roles . By junior and senior year, aim to take more of "the reigns" in at least one of your chosen activities. This not only demonstrates your commitment and growth but also provides invaluable leadership experience.

While you’re filtering through your extracurricular array, consider what activities truly light you up. 

Did you find yourself losing track of time (in a good way) during debate club meetings? 

Or maybe you discovered a hidden talent for painting in art class?

Whatever it is, take note of those passions and interests, as well as the advice of those who have been there before. Upperclassmen, counselors, and teachers can offer valuable insights and guidance as you navigate the wide array of activities available.

But don't be afraid to keep dabbling , either. Maybe you've been curious about coding, but never had the chance to explore it. Or perhaps you've been itching to try out for the school play, but felt too nervous last year. 

Sophomore year is the perfect time to push yourself and try new things.

Lastly, repeat after me: it's okay to step away from activities you did in 9th grade. 

In fact, it's quite common, and college admissions officers understand and even value students who know how to prioritize balance (I know because I was one at Pomona ). Colleges like MIT even list “the ability to prioritize balance” as a valued quality in their admissions process. So don't be afraid to explore new opportunities and let go of activities that no longer serve you.

So, here's to 10th grade: the year of the filter. Take the lessons learned from your freshman year adventures and use them to shape an even more focused and fulfilling high school journey.

Start “filtering” your activities down to 3-4 potential core, long-term activities

Ideally, at least one of those allows for leadership

And keep dabbling/exploring—it’s fine to let things from 9th grade go and explore new opportunities

You're waist-deep in high school now, and it's time to take your extracurricular involvement to the next level. You've dabbled, you've filtered, and now it's time to dive deeply into the activities that truly resonate with you.

As you navigate this pivotal year, ask yourself: 

“ Of the activities I’m involved in, are there opportunities to take on more of a leadership role or broaden the influence of the activity?”

“Is there a curiosity I’ve developed—from my classes, my own learning, even Wikipedia or YouTube rabbit holes, Netflix documentary binges, or one of my activities—that I can explore more deeply through a self-directed project?”

Junior year is often the perfect time to dive deeply into one (or maybe two) extracurriculars and focus on showing initiative and impact. Reflect on your first two years and think about problems and/or opportunities you've noticed as a member, and create an action plan to help address those points as an emerging leader (regardless of what title you hold).

Maybe you're part of the environmental club and you've noticed a lack of recycling bins around campus. Take the initiative to propose a recycling program and lead the charge in implementing it. Or perhaps you're passionate about mental health awareness and you want to organize a school-wide event to destigmatize discussions around mental health issues.

Junior year might also be the time to consider starting your own club or activity if you feel like the school doesn't have something that aligns with your interests. 

Maybe you're a budding entrepreneur and you want to start a business club where students can learn about entrepreneurship and even launch their own ventures. Or perhaps you're passionate about social justice and you want to start a diversity and inclusion club to advocate for marginalized communities within your school. 

“Diving deep” can also refer to something you do independently—not necessarily an existing extracurricular commitment. Maybe, as an aspiring history major, you decide to uncover neighborhood histories by interviewing locals and sharing them on a Wix or Squarespace website. Or perhaps you research how to make some DIY gadgets—such as solar-powered chargers to fuse your curiosity for technology with your commitment to sustainability.

Whatever you choose, junior year is all about diving deep into a budding intellectual or extracurricular interest, making a meaningful impact both on and off campus, or a combination of both.

Dive deeper into one (maybe two) activities that allow you to demonstrate initiative and impact

Remember that building an opportunity for yourself can easily be as impactful/impressive for college apps as “regular” activities

As you embark on your final year of high school, it's time to reflect on the mark you want to leave on your school community .

Take a moment to think about the clubs and organizations you've been a part of throughout high school. 

Are there things you want to accomplish in a particular club that you think would be great to "pass the torch" to future students? 

Maybe you want to implement a mentorship program within your club to ensure continuity and support for incoming members? 

Or perhaps you want to establish a scholarship fund to help future students pursue their passions?

Consider the traditions at your school. Are there traditions that you'd like to shape or be a part of during your senior year? 

Maybe you want to organize an epic senior prank that will go down in school history (but please, keep it safe and respectful!). Or perhaps you want to start an arguably more “mature” new tradition, like a senior sunrise breakfast where the graduating class gathers to watch the sunrise together on the first day of school. After all, you’re old and wise now—it’s time to embrace the early bird special

And don't forget about your own personal final hurrahs. This is your last year of high school, so focus on the things that bring you the most joy, fulfillment, and have the largest capacity for making a difference. Whether it's leading the school play, organizing a charity fundraiser, or simply spending quality time with friends, make sure to wrap up your high school journey in a way that feels meaningful to you.

Our final piece of advice? Be selective with how much you extend yourself, because 12th grade—especially the fall—is a time that is dominated by college applications for many students. 

This often requires more time than students anticipate, so practice the art of saying “no” and establishing boundaries. Yes, your legacy is important, but so are your mental health and future goals—and trying to cram college planning into a suitcase overflowing with academic and extracurricular trinkets galore will make it impossible to thoughtfully plan out your new epic trip: your best-fit college.

So, here's to 12th grade: The year of the legacy. 

Make it count, leave your mark, and take care of yourself as you prepare to embark on the next chapter of your life.

Reflect on the impact you want to leave behind

While we hope our above guidance around choosing extracurricular activities provides a helpful roadmap, our team has worked with many students and families who (understandably) feel like they are swerving all over the road while trying to figure out which extracurricular activities are “the best.”

Many feel overwhelmed by the smorgasbord of opinions, misinformation, and mixed messages online around how extracurricular activities impact a student’s admissions chances. 

Sometimes this can lead to some unhealthy choices that not only limit student autonomy and enthusiasm, but can also backfire and lead to a less successful admissions process. So…

Here are the “ seven deadly sins ” to avoid when considering your extracurricular activities:

1. Having the “what’s most impressive to colleges?” mentality define your entire extracurricular approach

There is often a gross misalignment between what students and families think are the most coveted extracurricular experiences by colleges versus ones that admissions officers would actually prefer to see. 

For instance, some students and families are surprised to learn that being a member of something like National Honor Society (NHS)—which students are eligible to join based on their academic performance in high school— does virtually nothing to increase your chances of admission , given how commonplace it is on a student’s resume. 

Now, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t join something like NHS if it’s available to you—after all, it’s a great way to (potentially) develop leadership skills and make an impact on your local community through service endeavors.

But just remember that designing an extracurricular profile solely for the sake of impressing someone else can make it really difficult for you to feel as excited about the ways you’re spending time outside of class. 

One key thing to keep in mind: colleges are essentially always asking themselves “What’s in it for us?” As in, how do you show that you’ll contribute to the college community? Having a laser focus on an activity that has no benefit to anyone else generally doesn’t carry a lot of weight in college admissions.

2. Thinking that a formal leadership role or title is the only way to demonstrate leadership

Many students think that you need to be president (or monarch, or czar, or oracle, or [insert name of other real or made-up leadership role]) of multiple clubs, organizations, and teams to be a competitive college applicant. 

While a title can communicate a certain degree of responsibility, there are actually many students leading lots of great initiatives and having their values guide their involvement within a certain activity without any title at all. 

For instance, one of our CEG college counselors recently worked with a student who wrote about pushing for a gender-inclusive formal wear policy for her soccer team (since they were previously asked to wear dresses on game days) in her college essays. The kicker (lol, because, soccer)? She wasn’t the team captain. 

Other examples that clearly demonstrate leadership without a title (and do so better than a title does):

A student who organized an in-school food bank distributing unused food to food-insecure students to take home, and grew the project from one school to a district to the state.

A student who noticed that autistic students ate in a separate lunchroom. He asked if he could eat with them and soon brought others with him—and eventually the segregation ended.

A student who played his violin at senior centers to entertain the residents. He realized that many of them were former musicians and he started bringing instruments and organizing ensembles. He created an organization of students doing this at different residences. They brought music back to so many lives—by engaging, not just entertaining.

A student who created a simple mental health curriculum for middle schoolers after giving a TEDx talk at a school assembly. A group of interested students gathered and they got funding and worked to bring the program into schools.

You get the idea.

The moral of this story: leadership is certainly a valued quality among many colleges, but titles and roles are not the only way to achieve this . 

Your college essay(s) can be a great way to share a little bit more about the real-deal work that you’ve accomplished as part of your activities, whether you had a title or not. High school can be a rather political place at times, and there are certainly instances where the students doing a lot of the “heavy lifting” within certain activities don’t get the credit they deserve. Let your college application be that place! 

3. Solely prioritizing activities based on their pedigree, prestige, and/or selectivity

Many summer programs held on college campuses fall into this category. 

Students and families chasing after elite colleges (including Ivy League schools and other extremely selective colleges, like MIT, Stanford, and Caltech) often think “doing a summer pre-college program at Harvard will definitely impress college admissions officers, because… well, it’s Harvard.”  

But summer programs along these lines often have no connection or relationship with the admissions office, and were developed as a way to make use of a more sparse/empty campus and bring in short-term revenue during the summer months . 

That’s not to say these programs can’t be valuable additions to your college process, and/or your life—but only doing them because you think they “look good for college” can leave you feeling uninspired and unsatisfied.

If you’re doing some of these programs, great. But as you do them, be sure to spend time reflecting on why the experience is important to you, what you’re learning, and how you’re growing.

4. Sticking with activities you’ve come to loathe in order to show commitment and consistency

Our team has worked with many students who mention that they’ve only pursued certain activities—like an instrument they’ve played since they were 5 years old—because they were afraid to step away from these long-term commitments. 

Of course, achieving a certain level of expertise and excellence in a certain area can be wonderful to share with colleges, but this should never take precedence over your own long-term mental health and wellness. 

If you find yourself dreading every meeting, practice, or rehearsal of a certain extracurricular activity, it could be a sign that stepping away from it will allow you to prioritize other things that bring you more joy and satisfaction. 

True, the prospect of stepping away can maybe be stressful and intimidating (especially if you’re continuing the activity out of family obligation or pressure), but doing this will allow you to feel more engaged and excited by your activities, which leads to a happier life overall. 

If you need help sharing news like this with your family, talk to a trusted adult, family member, school counselor, and/or mentor, who can guide you through that conversation and possibly mediate and/or join in. 

Valuable side note : essays about stepping away from activities like these—and the power of saying “no” and having healthy boundaries—often show vulnerability, maturity, and self-awareness to colleges, and can be wonderful stories to share amidst an application full of accolades.

5. Not exploring activities and opportunities outside of your own high school

While many high schools— particularly in more affluent school districts —are chock full of a range of clubs, volunteer opportunities, sports teams, and arts ensembles, there are many others that don’t have as many offerings (especially costly ones, like robotics ). 

Additionally, because so many high schools offer similar “categories” of activities, solely focusing your extracurricular life within the confines of your school can lead to your application looking rather “familiar” to admissions officers. 

In the age of the internet, there are seemingly infinite ways for students to occupy their time outside of formal school activities. Of course, some of these aren’t really seen as extracurricular activities (sorry, Minecraft four nights a week doesn’t count). 

But online communities around a shared interest or identity—even ones hosted on more “casual” platforms, like Discord—can show colleges that you’re the type of person who likes to bring people together and share your enthusiasm and/or curiosity around a certain topic. 

Beyond online communities and MOOC courses (e.g. Stanford’s free online courses ), consider activities and societies available to high school students from your hometown, like

 a teen writer’s section of your local paper

religious communities

or a youth advisory board

club sports teams (which are usually tryout-based and available to top athletes from high schools all across your area) 

Things like these are all great ways to spread your wings, meet peers from different walks of life, and pursue something that may not be available—or isn’t at the degree of competition or difficulty you’re ready to take on—at your own school. 

Plus, if you’re looking to make an impact through your activities within your community, collaborating with other schools—or like-minded peers who share your vision from across your hometown—can help you develop lots of meaningful skills and qualities, like teamwork, collaboration, and drive.

Important side note: Colleges view work (as in, your job at a coffee shop) or family responsibilities (as in, you help care for your siblings because both your parents work) as very valuable uses of time.

6. Shelling out lots of money for expensive “pay-to-play” programs (such as paid research opportunities) to stand out

There are many companies that offer pricey experiences—from immersive travel opportunities ( many of which include a community service component, which can be problematic and tone-deaf ) to research programs where your project is guaranteed to be published and/or peer-reviewed—that claim to yield higher acceptance rates at highly selective colleges. 

It’s important to evaluate these opportunities with a grain of salt and not view them as a “silver bullet” in the admissions process. In fact, many admissions officers are turned off when experiences repeatedly appear to be bought—versus earned or self-directed—in a student’s application. Here’s what one former Ivy League admission officer (who requested to remain anonymous) had to say to ProPublica about paid research programs :

“The business of churning out high school research is a] fast-growing epidemic… The number of outfits doing that has trebled or quadrupled in the past few years… There are very few actual prodigies. There are a lot of precocious kids who are working hard and doing advanced things. A sophomore in high school is not going to be doing high-level neuroscience. And yet, a very high number of kids are including this.”

Some programs are great—for example, as the article above mentions, Pioneer Research is accredited by Oberlin College.

But if you stumble upon a program that looks exciting and interesting, but you aren’t sure whether it’s reputable, you can ask your school counselor for advice. 

Better yet: you can email regional admissions officers at some of the colleges you may be interested in to get their take! Bonus: your email will count as demonstrated interest, which is an important aspect of many colleges’ admission process (more than extracurricular activities, in fact!), and two, you’ll gain perspective straight from “the source.”

7. Modeling your extracurricular path after another student who was admitted to top colleges

Now, don’t get us wrong: sometimes it’s great to lean on the wisdom of older siblings, family members, neighbors, friends, or mentors while navigating the college application process. 

However, emulating or recreating someone else’s extracurricular or academic profile—and/or assuming that those were the things that “tipped the scale” for that student—can lead to both a frustrating high school experience and a lack of personal motivation. 

For one, selective colleges have institutional priorities that play a heavy hand in their admissions process . 

These priorities are very fluid and variable from college to college, and from year to year at the same college, and students are admitted, yes, because of their hard work in high school—but it’s also very possible there was an edge or “hook” that influenced their process that you may not know about. 

Moreover, most colleges do not actually tell students why they were admitted beyond generalized, vague language about their academic excellence and/or accomplishments in an acceptance letter. 

Thus, it’s even possible that that student you’re inspired by was admitted to fulfill pressing priorities, and their extracurricular profile was deemed just “fine” or “satisfactory” by the admissions team . So, yes, lean on the wisdom of older students—but don’t try to be them. 

Because there’s only one you, and you’re pretty dang amazing in your own right!

The sections below will help you understand how to categorize activities when creating your college application, while offering examples to illustrate each Common App category.

Without further ado, here are many (many) examples and a brief(-ish) explanation of the 27 different Common App activity types (plus the oh so mysterious “Other Club/Activity” category):

“Academic” is a pretty broad term for anything outside of your normal classes that is academic, intellectual, or scholarly in nature. Academically-oriented extracurriculars can be a great way to develop an intellectual interest that you’ve stumbled upon through your high school classes, or perhaps a Wikipedia or YouTube rabbit hole.

These are also a way to provide evidence of your academic interests to colleges—what have you done to explore beyond classes? How has your intellectual curiosity driven you to learn more about your interests and aptitudes?

The great thing about pursuing these interests as part of a club or competition-based team is that you can connect with like-minded peers who share your geeky enthusiasm for black holes, Medieval literature, and/or everything in between—and, along the way, you can develop critical skills like teamwork, active listening, and discipline.

Many high schools offer formal opportunities like QuizBowl, Mathletes (side note: for some peak early 2000s nostalgia—aka probably before you were born—and a glimpse of the cutthroat world of math competitions, check out this iconic “aha” math moment from 2004’s Mean Girls ), or Academic Decathlon as a way to flex your delightfully nerdy side (which, trust us here, colleges absolutely LOVE, even if the stereotypical 80s movie jock villain may not) and put your brain power to the test in a competitive setting. 

Academically-oriented summer pre-college programs or enrichment programs, like the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth , can also serve as ways to explore your academic interests beyond school, especially during the summer months (if you just CAN’T FATHOM parting from school for that long).

It’s usually a good category to select when you browse through the preexisting list and don’t see a specific designation for your academically-inclined activity—which may more closely connect to something like Art, Computer/Technology, Debate/Speech, Foreign Language, Research, or Robotics.

Art is a graduation requirement in many U.S. states, but it’s not just a class—it’s a creative calling! 

Students often have opportunities like Photography Club or Art Club to continue expressing their creativity (no matter the medium) within their high schools. Beyond this, art can also be something students pursue through outside lessons, independently at home (in your home “studio,” aka that corner of the basement that’s not occupied by those broken lamps you’re not sure why your mom is saving), or even through online communities. 

In an age where technology intersects with creativity, even students who never felt like they excelled with their preschool finger paintings can leverage AI as a means to expand their artistic horizons. You should feel empowered to explore digital art tools, experiment with generative algorithms, and push the boundaries of traditional mediums.

Art can also be a powerful vehicle to elevate social issues, personal challenges or experiences, or causes near and dear to your heart: You may want to consider spearheading murals in your community to showcase the diversity of your city, or creating digital art around a personal challenge you've worked to overcome—like body positivity—and share your work widely on a (soon-to-be) viral Instagram account.

But art doesn’t have to be a solitary endeavor—it thrives in collaboration. Consider joining forces with fellow artists to embark on collaborative projects that amplify your collective voices and visions.

For those with a competitive streak, art competitions offer a platform to showcase your talents and vie for recognition. Whether it's the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, the Congressional Art Competition, or local exhibitions, these competitions provide an opportunity to shine on a broader stage.

And for upperclassmen considering art school, start preparing materials for National Portfolio Day and other portfolio reviews early. Curate a collection of your best work, seek feedback from mentors and peers, and showcase your artistic evolution with pride.

Athletics: Club

For students with exceptional athletic talent, it may be wise to consider joining an out-of-school club team to compete on a level that is more on par (hehe, sports) with your skills.

Many U.S. cities have a spectrum of club sport options for a wide range of athletic opportunities—from soccer, to swimming, to even more niche sports like squash. 

The benefits of joining a club sport are that you can continue to develop your athleticism if you’ve “peaked” within your high school. Additionally, club sports are the primary mode through which high school athletes are recruited to play sports in college , which can significantly improve your admissions chances at a wide range of colleges and universities.

If you’re one of the star players on a varsity team as a freshman or sophomore, love your sport, and could see yourself playing even more of it—and being inspired by teammates from around your state or local area—look into your club sports options. You also may find that many students have begun playing club sports in middle school, or sometimes even earlier! No matter when you enter the club sport “pipeline,” there’s a place for you, so long as you make it through the tryouts. 

One potential downside of club sports is that they often require a lot of time and investment from students and families—from games and showcases all across your state, to grueling weekend practices. Given this, it can be difficult for students pursuing club sports to have a more robust extracurricular life within their high school or local community in non-athletic areas. 

Because of that, it’s important for students to communicate the number of hours and sacrifices their club time has involved somewhere in their application . Admissions officers are certainly familiar with the commitment, but it’s often a powerful reminder when students outline, for instance, their practice schedule and the sheer lack of “free time” they have to do other things.

Athletics: JV/Varsity

Most sports offered in U.S. high schools are broken up into two primary difficulty or skill levels: Junior Varsity (JV), which is usually for more basic and/or intermediate athletes, and Varsity, which is for the most advanced athletes. 

Depending on your high school’s distinct culture, there can be a lot of cultural capital and social status associated with what team you end up on—with varsity athletes being seen as the “Queen Bees” of the pool, court, or field. We’ve worked with lots of students who’ve expressed disappointment and/or embarrassment for “only making JV” within their sport.

Here’s the kicker there:

Most admissions officers truly do not care much about the athletic level you’ve achieved , as both options—JV and varsity—represent a commitment to physical health and wellness, and the development of crucial life skills like teamwork, discipline, and time management. As a general rule, level of sports involvement only truly impacts admissions chances if you’re being recruited to play at the college . (Also, have you tallied up the bad sports puns in this blog yet? They’re kind of a serve…). 😉

Admissions officers are typically not assessing your application for athletic talent. The same goes for students with exceptional talent in the arts, as colleges often offer program-based auditions or supplemental submissions to have their faculty or program directors make that judgment call. Because most colleges that offer competitive sports—whether those are Division I, II, or III—have an athletic recruitment process that is managed by the coaching staff and the college’s athletic department, that’s. Additionally, it’s pretty rare for admissions officers to “flag” certain students who have an extensive athletic resume for recruitment potential, as they already have a list of students provided to them by the coaches. 

Does that mean you should just quit your high school sport entirely? Certainly not! 

For many students, high school sports can serve as their primary social network, a mode to express school spirit, and, as we’ve previously mentioned, an enjoyable yet challenging way to develop valuable skills, qualities, values, insights, and interests that colleges admire. 

The bottom line: high school sports, both JV and varsity, are valuable additions to your college application, as they show commitment and contribution to your high school and many other valuable skills. Just take the pressure off or yourself to feel like you have to have a laundry list of All-American awards or trophies to report, because, unless you’re planning on pursuing athletic recruitment and playing that sport in college competitively (which we have a podcast all about for more information) , it’s not something you’re being evaluated on with a high degree of scrutiny!

Small side note : some high schools may even have teams specifically for freshmen, in which case you can still select “Athletics: JV/Varsity” (since it’s the category most closely linked with “in school” sports).

Some students grew up performing surgery on their Barbies (or maybe even their Shopkins if they had, like, the most precise scalpel work ever known to humankind).

Whatever the case, “Career Oriented” clubs and extracurricular activities can be a great way to further clarify whether or not that emerging professional interest is, indeed, something you want to pursue.

Unlike Academic extracurriculars (see above), which tend to focus on core academic subjects (like English, math, social studies, language, and/or science), Career Oriented extracurricular activities are trade- and profession-focused, meaning they’re meant to expose you to what it’s like to work in a particular industry/“the real world.” 

Within your school, you may have options like HOSA-Future Health Professionals , Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) , or DECA (a club for emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management) to explore these various paths.

A big piece of advice we like to share when it comes to community service: remember the impact of your actions, even if they can feel small (cue iconic Carrie Underwood song ). 

You're not just volunteering at the local animal shelter—you're the guardian angel for those fluffy companions, dispensing belly rubs and treats like a pro. Or perhaps you're tutoring younger students, wielding your knowledge like a magic wand to banish confusion and summon clarity.

Ever found yourself rallying the troops for a good cause, like organizing a bake sale to fundraise for charity? That's not just baking cookies; it's baking smiles and hope into every bite. And if you've ever donned a pair of gardening gloves to plant trees or clean up parks, you're not just getting your hands dirty; you're cultivating a greener, cleaner future. ( But side note : be a little wary of getting super flowery/hyperbolic with your Activities List descriptions , unless you can clearly make it an obvious joke.)

These experiences aren't just about giving back: they're about becoming the best version of yourself.

Admissions officers aren't looking for caped crusaders or masked vigilantes (although that would be pretty cool). First up, we have things like coding and computer science (CS) clubs within your high school. Some have national and international reach, like Girls Who Code , while others are more home-grown (or home… programmed?). Hackathons are another great way to take the skills you’ve learned in these clubs to the next level, often solving real-world issues through tech ideas and innovations. These can help you build up the entrepreneurial skills that many college STEM programs are hoping to see in applicants. Whether you're crafting elegant algorithms or slaying bugs like a digital exterminator, coding and CS clubs offer a space to hone your programming prowess. You get bonus points for mastering the art of debugging without pulling out your hair.

But wait, there's more. 

Gaming tournaments and Esports teams are not just about crushing your opponents in pixelated combat (though that's definitely a perk). They're about strategic thinking, teamwork, and mastering the art of button-mashing without breaking a sweat. So, whether you're a seasoned pro or a casual gamer, gaming tournaments—whether those are in-school, online, or further afield—offer a chance to level up your skills and forge new friendships in the digital arena. We wouldn’t necessarily say that this is a highly sought-after extracurricular priority at most colleges (as in, most don’t have varsity Esports teams where you’d be recruited to play), but they can certainly be a fun part of your high school experience. Balance is key!

Of course, let's not forget about tech internships, which can be a great way to put skills you’ve developed through classes, clubs and competitions to the next level. Whether you're interning at a startup, a tech giant, or a local business looking to improve their work through artificial intelligence (AI), tech internships can offer a glimpse into the fast-paced world of Silicon Valley and valuable opportunities to network with industry professionals. There’s an “Internship” section on the Common App to “properly” label these experiences by the time you start applying to colleges—but that’s a more technical detail. And hey, we (and you) love all things technical.

And last but not least, we have independently-pursued tech or computer projects. Whether you're building your own app (or maybe even a computer), designing a website (maybe for a local non-profit?), or hacking your way through a cybersecurity challenge, self-directed tech projects offer a chance to unleash your creativity and leave your digital footprint on the world. 

Who knows, your next project could be the next big thing in tech—and it’s sure to show colleges that you’re able to solve complex problems and make something out of nothing.

Oftentimes, it's low-income students who carry the heavier burden of these responsibilities, and colleges recognize and appreciate the invaluable contributions they make to their families and communities.

Family responsibilities can encompass a wide range of duties, from driving younger siblings to and from school or their activities, to babysitting for extended family members. For many immigrant families and communities, caring for younger relatives is a common practice—a testament to the strong bonds of family and community support.

Some students take on the role of primary caregiver for a grandparent or other family member, especially if they have health-related needs. Others may find themselves in charge of grocery shopping and meal planning, particularly if they have parents working night shifts or long hours to make ends meet.

Speaking of admissions, aspiring musicians should consider composing a musical supplement to accompany their college applications. Be sure to check specific supplement instructions on individual college's websites. Some use Slideroom and give specific specs. Some don't want visual/perf arts materials from students not majoring in the subject (e.g. BU ). Others warn against sending materials if you are not AMAZING (hi, Yale ). Others will give music scholarships to non-music majors ( Bucknell )!  "Talent" is not equally weighted.

And a heads up: while colleges don't necessarily prefer certain instruments over others, the most common do tend to be piano or violin, so just know that there are usually less pressing needs for that musical talent (from an institutional priorities standpoint ) on a college campus. Whereas French Horn or stand-up bass or bassoon are way harder to find. Ultimately, top talent in any instrument is valued, and  orchestra directors can recruit just like athletic coaches.

For those setting their sights on conservatories, early preparation is key. Familiarize yourself with audition requirements and repertoire expectations to ensure you're in tune with the demands of these specialized programs.

Start by looking for student research journals or local science fairs. Even local university journals are good places to start. And don't forget about competitions like the Google Science Fair. Remember, the goal is to share your findings and get feedback, so don’t be shy!

But, a big caveat : be careful with “pay-to-play” research and publication programs (for detail, see #6 in the “How NOT to pursue extracurricular activities” section above.).

In summary, research in high school can be your ticket to becoming a mini-expert in something you love. School spirit activities are the heartbeat of any school, bringing students together and creating unforgettable memories. Plus, they’re a blast and can look great on your college application. Let’s dive into the world of school spirit with the same energy as the most extra peppy rally you can think of.

Unlike other extracurriculars that might take you off-campus or across the state, school spirit activities are all about your home turf. 

These activities are deeply tied to your school, making them unique in a sense. Think student council, pep rallies, homecoming dances, and fundraisers. 

The student council is usually the powerhouse behind these events, organizing everything from bake sales to prom. Other activities, like cheerleading and pep band, can also fall under this category, depending on how serious they are at your school (you may want to label them “Athletics” or “Music: Instrumental” on the Common App, for instance, but again—admissions officers won’t care about the semantics too much here).

School spirit activities are often light-hearted and perfect for students with dynamic personalities who love bringing people together and spreading cheer. If you’ve got a knack for creativity, planning Spirit Week is your time to shine. Themes like Pajama Day, Twin Day, or Throwback Thursday can turn the school halls into a vibrant runway. And who doesn't love a good old-fashioned students vs. teachers competition? These events are not only fun but also foster a sense of community and inclusivity, which colleges highly value.

Speaking of inclusivity, don’t forget to involve everyone in your school community, from custodial staff to cafeteria workers. 

They are vital parts of the school and including them in events can create a more united and happy school environment. Some schools even have a house system (yes, much like Hogwarts), where students compete in fun challenges throughout the year. Being involved in house leadership can be a great way to enhance school spirit and showcase your leadership skills.

School spirit activities can often overlap with student government, which focuses more on the serious stuff—like school policies and procedures. But remember, both are valuable. 

Student government is the “work hard” side of the coin, while school spirit is the “play hard” side. Together, they create a balanced and memorable high school experience. Colleges want to see students who can work hard but also know how to have fun and bring joy to their communities. So, bonus points if you like double-dipping (oh, come on… everyone secretly does it…). 

If your school doesn’t have a strong school spirit presence, why not start something? 

Organize a new club, plan events, or even create a friendly competition with neighboring schools. Fundraising can help cover costs if your school’s budget is pretty tight. Think car washes, bake sales, or even a GoFundMe campaign. Your initiative will not only boost school morale but also impress college admissions officers.

Ready to make a difference in the world and show colleges that you care about more than just your grades? Social justice activities offer a means of demonstrating your passion, commitment, and drive to advocate for a better world. 

Let’s dive into how you can champion social justice causes during high school, one rally at a time.

First, let’s clarify a common misconception: social justice and community service are related but distinct . 

While community service often involves direct action like volunteering at a soup kitchen or cleaning up a park, social justice is about advocating for systemic changes. It’s the difference between feeding the hungry today and fighting for policies that end hunger tomorrow. Social justice clubs focus on issues like income inequality, educational inequity, BIPOC rights, LGBTQ+ rights, climate change, and more. They aim to tackle the root causes of social problems, pushing for lasting change.

In high schools, social justice clubs sometimes overlap with cultural affinity groups. If your club is more about celebrating traditions, it’s leaning towards cultural appreciation (and would probably warrant the “Cultural” category on the Common App). But if it’s about advocating for policy changes and raising awareness on justice issues, you’re in social justice territory.

Getting involved in social justice can start with joining or forming a club at your school. Organizations like the ACLU offer fantastic resources and ideas for young activists. You could plan a rally, organize a peaceful protest, or host a panel discussion on issues you’re passionate about. These activities show colleges that you’re not just aware of social issues, but are actively working to address them.

As you move up in high school and gain more clarity about your skills and interests, consider merging your academic passions with social justice.

If you’ve frequently been told you have innate leadership abilities and you want to leave a legacy, student government can be your platform.

Beyond student government, which helps keep your school running smoothly and ensures that student voices are heard, your school may also offer clubs like Model Senate and Model UN. These give you a taste of other political systems, like the US Senate or the fascinating world of international diplomacy. You’ll debate, draft resolutions, and develop a deeper understanding of political processes.

 There are also Young Democrats or Young Republicans, where you can connect with students who share your political ideology, bring in speakers, and organize activities to better understand the U.S. (unofficial) two-party system. These clubs might host debates, participate in local political events, and even organize voter registration drives.

Outside your school, there are countless ways to get involved in politics. 

Volunteering or interning for a local political campaign is an excellent start. It’s pretty much always election season somewhere, whether it’s local, state, or federal. You can phonebank, canvass, or help with campaign events. 

For those highly motivated to pursue politics or political science in college, consider programs like the Senate Page program or your state’s youth senate. These offer hands-on experience in the political arena and are incredible additions to your resume.

Hey superstar. 

High school drama clubs offer a fantastic platform to develop meaningful life skills—both on and off the stage.

Most high schools have a drama club that puts on a mix of straight plays, musicals, and other big performance events. These productions require a variety of roles, each contributing uniquely to the magic of the theatre. 

Acting helps develop public speaking skills, confidence, empathy, and the ability to think on your feet. Whether you’re playing the lead in a musical or a supporting character in a play, you’ll learn how to express emotions, memorize lines, and work as part of a team.

Stage managers are the unsung heroes of any production: coordinating rehearsals, managing backstage activities during performances, and keeping everyone on schedule. This role hones organizational skills, leadership, and problem-solving.

If you’re interested in lighting, sound, or set design, the tech crew is your domain. These roles involve setting up and operating technical equipment, designing stage sets, and creating the visual and auditory atmosphere of the production. Skills developed here include technical proficiency, creativity, and attention to detail.

If you have a vision for the whole show, consider directing or producing. These roles involve overseeing the entire production, from casting to final performance. They develop leadership, project management, and creative vision.

Beyond your high school drama club, many towns and cities offer additional theatre opportunities. 

Local theatres often welcome high school actors to audition and participate in productions alongside adult actors, giving you a taste of more professional theatre. If you’re interested in film and television, consider starting to build a reel or audition for local productions (or maybe even commercials) to gain experience and exposure.

It's important to remember that being in a show requires a significant commitment. Rehearsals often take place after school and can run for several hours each day as the performance date approaches. This means balancing your academic responsibilities with your passion for theatre. But despite the time and energy required, the thrill of bringing a character to life or contributing to a successful production makes it all worthwhile.

If you’re considering taking your passion for theatre to college, there are several paths to explore. 

Some students choose conservatory programs, which are highly specialized and focus intensely on the performing arts. These programs can be incredibly competitive, so it’s important to research and prepare thoroughly.

For those interested in more traditional college experiences, many liberal arts colleges offer robust theatre majors and programs. Even if a school doesn’t have a conservatory program, your involvement in high school drama can still boost your candidacy.

When applying to colleges, consider putting together a portfolio of your work. This can include footage from different plays, highlighting your range as an actor or your skills in other areas like directing or stage management. A strong portfolio can be a powerful addition to your application, showcasing your talent and commitment.

Paid work opportunities are a fantastic way to gain real-world experience, boost your resume, and even help your family financially. Plus, contrary to popular belief, colleges value work experience just as much as traditional extracurricular activities.  

Let’s dive into the world of high school jobs with the enthusiasm that comes with getting a first paycheck!

Paid work isn’t just about earning money (though, let’s be real, that’s a big perk). Jobs across different industries help you develop crucial skills and qualities. 

Whether you’re flipping burgers or freelancing online, you’ll gain time management skills by balancing work and school, responsibility from showing up on time and completing tasks, customer service skills by interacting with customers, and teamwork through collaborating with colleagues.

Worried that colleges prefer traditional extracurriculars over work experience? Well, fear not, my friend. 

Many students need to work to support their families, and colleges understand this. In fact, working demonstrates maturity, commitment, and a strong work ethic. If work commitments limit your involvement in school activities, use the Additional Info section on the Common App to explain your situation. It highlights your dedication and resilience.

Work can take many forms. 

For example, websites like UpWork offer freelance opportunities in writing, video editing, graphic design, and more. These gigs allow you to work flexible hours and build a portfolio of professional work. 

Don’t overlook traditional jobs, like retail, which is perfect for learning customer service and sales skills, or hospitality, which is great for building communication skills and handling high-pressure situations. 

Tutoring is ideal if you excel in a particular subject and want to help others while earning money. These roles offer flexible hours, making them manageable alongside your schoolwork. (Bonus: recruit some friends and demonstrate your dedication to community by starting a tutoring group for younger students?)

So, roll up your sleeves, find that perfect part-time job, and start cashing in on experience and earnings!

Hey there, omnipotent… “other clubber?”

If you happened to read through all 26 prior sections of these Common Application extracurricular activity categories—congratulations, you deserve a certificate of completion. You may also be thinking: “hey, what about the Fondue Club that I started last year?”

Well, what I’m thinking is… why wasn’t I invited?

Cheesy jokes aside (teehee), there are many activities that fall outside of the purview of the Common Application defaults. 

From speciality clubs and student societies— anything from Video Game Club to your side hustle reading the morning announcements for the school office—there may be niche, interesting ways you spend your time that you can conveniently label “Other Club / Activity” if need be.

That doesn’t make it any less legitimate! 

In fact, non-traditional activities and personal hobbies—from coin collecting, to juggling,  to getting your pilot’s license–are often a nice palate cleanser for admissions officers, who often read applications from students doing similar clubs and activities in high school . 

Now, that doesn’t mean the traditional activities are bad. Far from it! We’re just taking a moment to legitimize any of these “other” activities you may find yourself getting totally immersed in. 

Independent hobbies and self-directed projects are a great way to really lean into an intellectual curiosity or academic interest you may continue to develop throughout high school. 

For instance, one of our college counselors previously worked with a student who self-produced his own podcast all about ants. We’d say that’s a perfect example for this type of category.

One piece of advice we’d like to close with is potentially thinking about sharing the wealth of a personal hobby you may have that’s a little less “traditional teenager.”  

So, for instance, trying to start a club at your school to share your interest with your immediate peers. That’s a great way to layer collaboration and teamwork onto an existing way you’re already spending your time. 

Sharing is caring, after all—especially when fondue is involved. Bonus points for inclusivity if you fold in a non-dairy alternative.

How to Write a Great Extracurricular Activity Essay

Introduction

Extracurricular activities are an important part of the college application process. They give admissions officers a chance to see your interests, talents, and leadership skills outside of the classroom. If you're planning to write an extracurricular activity essay, here are some tips to help you write a great one.

Choose the Right Activity

The first step is to choose the right activity to write about. It should be something that you're passionate about and that you've made a significant commitment to. If you're not sure which activity to choose, try brainstorming a list of your interests and then narrow it down to the ones that you've been involved in for the longest period of time.

Start with a Strong Introduction

Your introduction is your chance to make a good first impression on the admissions officer. Start by stating the name of the activity and why you chose to participate in it. Then, give a brief overview of your involvement in the activity.

Tell a Story

The best extracurricular activity essays are those that tell a story. Choose a specific experience that you had in the activity and use it to illustrate your growth and development. This could be a time when you faced a challenge, overcame an obstacle, or learned something new.

Focus on the Impact

What impact has the extracurricular activity had on you? How has it shaped your values, interests, or goals? Be specific and use examples to illustrate your points.

Show, Don't Tell

Don't just tell the admissions officer about your experiences in the extracurricular activity. Show them by using vivid language and concrete examples. This will help them to visualize your experiences and understand the impact that the activity has had on you.

Be Yourself

The most important thing is to be yourself in your extracurricular activity essay. Don't try to be someone you're not. Admissions officers want to get to know the real you, so let your personality shine through in your writing.

Here are some additional tips for writing a great extracurricular activity essay:

Keep it concise. Your essay should be no more than 500 words long.

Proofread carefully. Make sure your essay is free of errors in grammar and spelling.

Get feedback from others. Ask a trusted friend, family member, or teacher to read your essay and give you feedback.

Supplemental essays where you elaborate on an activity give colleges an insight into who you are, the role you play in your community, and what is meaningful to you. By writing a response that focuses on the impact you have had in one of your extracurriculars, you can provide new information that can help committee members understand your fit for the school.

Take a look at some examples of supplemental essays on extracurricular activities below:

  • Briefly discuss the significance to you of the school or summer activity in which you have been most involved. (approximately 1/2 page, single-spaced) – Georgetown University
  • Please briefly elaborate on an extracurricular activity or work experience of particular significance to you. (175 words) – Amherst College
  • Vanderbilt offers a community where students find balance between their academic and social experiences. Please briefly elaborate on how one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences has influenced you. (250-400 words) – Vanderbilt University

As with any supplemental essay, start by reading the prompt thoroughly. Even though these questions are phrased similarly, they have different word limits. Vanderbilt allows you to write a response twice as long as Amherst’s. For extracurricular prompts with longer word limits, you should go into greater detail. Make sure you answer all parts of the question . Since a prompt like Vanderbilt’s directly asks how the activity has “influenced you,” address that in your essay. What were your responsibilities? Did you gain any new skills? How have you applied those skills in other areas of your life?

Georgetown has also mentioned that your topic should revolve around an activity where you are “most involved.” This phrase directs you to what any college with such a prompt wants to know: how do you spend a significant amount of time outside school and how have you made a difference in your community?

Choose your topic carefully. You don’t want to write about a club where you were a passive participant. Think about your biggest time commitments. Consider your interests and goals, as well as experiences that have been the most meaningful. You should choose an extracurricular that has allowed you to have a leadership role and make your mark on your community. Note that you don’t actually need a title like “President” or “Captain” to have taken on a leadership role; even if you’re a club member, you can demonstrate leadership by taking charge of a project or initiative. Finally, make sure you haven’t already gone into detail about your topic in your personal statement.

When writing essays about extracurricular activities, don’t just describe the activity and what it entails . Your essay should primarily focus on the impact you’ve made. No matter how the question is phrased, admissions officers want to know about your involvement rather than what everyone generally does in this club or organization.

Chances are, you’ve already mentioned this position in your activities list, resume, or both. So, use the space given by the supplemental essay to provide new information on who you are. What role did you play and what difference did you make? Did you solve any problems?

In reading your response, admissions officers want to be able to picture you on campus. Take advantage of the extracurricular prompt and allow them to gauge how you’d take advantage of the school’s resources and contribute to the college community.

Um, just to give you a, a brief sense of who I am, um, I got my bachelor’s at Carnegie Mellon in psychology. Um, I thought I was gonna be a clinical psychologist. My life took a different path. I ended up at Harvard Law School and I’m now working as a nonprofit attorney and have been with CollegeAdvisor for over a year, um, advising students and also as a captain on our essay review team.

Great. And now real quick, we just wanna see where, um, everyone is at. So what grade are you currently in? Eighth, ninth, 10th, 11th, 12th or other. And other can be if you’re a transfer student or if you’re taking a gap year, and if you’re a parent on the call, you can select the grade that your student is going into.

And while we wait for those responses to roll in, Anna, can you tell us, um, does the activity that a student write. Uh, writes about, uh, need to be on their activities list? Great question. I would want to know a little more about what the student’s thoughts are. Um, cuz my initial thought is, why wouldn’t you put it on your activities list?

If it’s an issue of like you’ve maxed out the space, um, then I think you just wanna prioritize your activities list based on importance to you impact on your life and the amount of involvement. Um, so if there’s a club you’ve only been in for a week, maybe take that one off and put on the club that you’re writing about.

Um, but it, it’s gonna all depend on like the specifics. Hmm. So it’s looking like we have a great mixture in the crowd. We have 1% eighth graders, 5% ninth graders, 17% 10th graders, 37% 11th graders, which is not the majority, but they have the most percentage, uh, 36% 12th graders, and 3% other. And you can control the slides.

Great. Well, welcome everyone. Um, so the first question we wanted to answer is, where in the application do you even talk about extracurriculars? Um, and there are a lot of options. The most obvious place is, um, in your activities list. Um, and we have here activities, work and family responsibilities to highlight.

Activities list is broad. Um, you can really include so many different things there, and we’ll get into that later. Um, there’s also a section tried about honors and achievements. Those are usually related to an extracurricular activity. Your personal statement. You can write about extracurriculars. You do not have to.

Um, for those of you who maybe haven’t looked at or aren’t this far in the process, um, specifically with the Common App, which is where probably most of your applications will go through, there are a list of questions you can choose from for your personal statement. They’re pretty open-ended, um, and it’s completely up to you what you write about.

Can be an extracurricular. Doesn’t have to be the same thing is true if the college you’re applying to has, um, writing supplements. They might ask additional questions and want you to write additional essays there. And then I have letters of recommendation on here. You would not write this, that’s probably clear.

But there is an opportunity if you are asking a teacher or maybe a mentor and to write a letter of recommendation and they have seen how involved you are in a certain extracurricular, it’s completely appropriate to ask them, Are you comfortable writing about what you’ve seen me do in math club and in whatever the, the extracurricular might be?

So that’s just one more creative way to get your extracurriculars in there. Um, but that is not one that you would write. So the real answer to this question, what activities can students describe in their activities? List your essays. The real answer. Oh, sorry. Did my audio cut up? Okay. Um, the real answer is anything you can write about.

Anything, this is the list that the Common App provides in the activities list section. Uh, Anna, can we pause for a second? There are students, uh, with tech issues at the moment. Um, can you try, uh, speaking without the AirPods? That might help. Did I just cut out for a second cuz my laptop tried to use Siri?

I’ll try.

Can you hear me now? Yeah, I can hear you. Okay. Is this better? Everyone? I think that should help, but I’ll stop if we have anymore. Sorry about that. No, thank you for interrupting. Um, so I was just saying on the, on the Common App there is a section for activities and there’s literally a dropdown. That lists every single thing here.

That’s where I got this list from. So these are the types of extracurriculars that the Common App is thinking you might include. Um, you’ll notice the last one is other clubs slash activity. So truly you can put anything, um, it should be meaningful to you. It should be something you’ve been very engaged in.

Um, I did see one of the questions that people submitted ahead of time was about does it have to be like an official club affiliated with a school or a program? No. Um, so maybe, you know, if you’re dancing with friends, you could put it under dance or you could put it under other activity. They’re also gonna ask, you know, how many hours you’ve spent on it.

There’s a place for you to describe your engagement with that extracurricular. So you have a lot of leeway to write about what activities are most important to you.

So why, why are we even having a training on writing about extracurriculars and why is that something you would want to do? Um, first of all, writing about it in your essays will allow you to convey a lot more than you can fit in the activity section. Um, so that the description that you can put in that section is limited to 150 characters that is very short, that is less than like half of what you can put in a tweet.

Um, so you can’t fit a lot there. It’s hard to convey personal growth, um, really deep things there so you can capture that instead in an essay. Um, it also allows you to highlight things on your activities list that are maybe extra important to you. Um, and they’re just a great source I have found of stories.

And we’ll talk about storytelling and how important that is in your essays.

Speaking of how can students write meaningful essays about their activities? Tell a story. I say this a hundred times a day. I’m like a broken records. I drive my students not to lit, but I believe in it. It is so important when you are writing an essay, tell a story. You have the activity section to list, you know, what you did.

Here is where you show us what it looked like, what it felt like, what you experienced, what you learned, um, and any opportunity to connect that activity or what you learned in it to your college or career interests. Um, that’s a great thing to do in your essay.

Yes. Uh, so now we’re just gonna do another quick poll. So where are you in the college application process? Haven’t started. I’m researching schools. I’m working on my essays. I’m getting my application materials together. Or if you’re really lucky, I’m almost done. And while we wait for that, Anna, can you tell us how can writing about an extracurricular help those who have trouble writing about themselves?

Well, I think writing about ourselves can be difficult, and if you’re writing about an extracurricular, it maybe provides a little more structure to a question. Um, and like I said earlier, they’re just great sources of stories. So instead of thinking about like I’m writing about myself, you can start out by just describing the moment.

What did you see when you went to this new club? What did you think? What did you feel? What have you learned? Um, and if you can frame it like that, maybe it feels a bit less like you’re writing about yourself even though you are. Um, so starting with like a specific moment in mind that was really meaningful to you, I think is an easy way to, or easier way to start writing.

Mm-hmm. . So it’s looking like we have 26% have been started. 35% are researching schools, 21% are working on their essays. 11% are getting their application materials together and 6% though lucky if you are almost done and you can control the sides. Great. Well, it’s nice to have thread here. Um, so here are some high level tips for describing your extracurriculars.

Um, I’ve broken it out because my advice is different depending on where you’re writing about ’em. If it’s in the activity section. Um, You don’t have to use full sentences. Start with action words, like on a resume. Um, highlight your leadership, focus on what you’ve done, not what the club is. Um, so you don’t need to explain what Debate Club is.

Folks will know that. Um, and here’s a place to be specific. Um, so one example might be you could write Belong to Debate Club, where students debate controversial topics at various high schools in the region. Or you could write, participated in 15 debates. Organized team fundraiser, which raised over a thousand dollars in co-led practice sessions.

So I would say that second example is much stronger because it’s specific, you know, 15 debates raise over a thousand dollars and it uses action words like participated, organized, co-led. and it doesn’t waste that valuable 150 characters describing what debate club is. Um, in contrast, in your essay, you’re gonna tell me one to two stories of a debate practice or a debate you were in, Put us in your shoes.

What did it look like when you were standing on stage? What did it feel like? What did you hear? Um, and then really importantly, what did you learn about yourself? How did you grow? How has this shaped your college aspirations, your career aspirations? So there’s a lot more depth in the essay, um, versus in an activity section where it’s, you know, a lot, a lot briefer.

Um, things to avoid in your essays. I’ve already said this. You don’t need to describe the club organization if it’s obvious from the name. Sometimes it’s not. Um, and if it’s not, describe it. You want your readers to know what you’re talking about. Um, I would be as brief as possible there, so you save as much space as you can for you and what you’ve done in this club.

Um, similarly, an essay is not the place to list, you know, all of the clubs you’ve joined or all of the things you’ve accomplished in them, like simply as a list. Um, you can do that in that activity section, but here in an essay, you want to really pull your reader in, be engaging. We can do that best through storytelling.

Um, I have negativity on here. That’s not to say that you can’t write about. Negative moments. Sometimes those can be really rich areas to write about. Someone asked the question ahead of time about, um, is it okay to write about things we failed at? Absolutely. If you frame it from the perspective of, I failed at this and here’s what I did in response, here’s what I learned, here’s how I grew.

That could be a fantastic essay. Um, it’s okay to say you’ve failed, but you won’t want to end the essay there. Right. That would be your starting point. And then show us how you responded to that failure.

My experience reviewing essays, um, is that truly, you can relate almost anything back to your career or academic interest. Um, so I think sometimes students get a little worried, um, if I’m applying to. For a math major, and then I have to write about math club. Not necessarily. If you’ve been the most involved in theater and you’ve learned a lot about yourself there, then there you might have more to write about that might be more engaging.

And what have you learned about yourself in theater that confirms for you that math is going to be a, a good major for you? Um, it can be a personality trait. It doesn’t have to be I love math. I’m in math clubs. I’m going to be a math major Also, any amount of impact can be meaningful. There are some questions about impact.

Does it have to be world, world impact? No. Oh my goodness. Please do not put that pressure on yourselves. Um, these stories do not have to be TV worthy at all. Um, I read a fantastic essay. That was about a student’s journey in golf. Um, and it started out by him saying, Snap, the song of the, or the sound of the club as it hits the ball.

Da da da da da puts me in this place. And then this was actually an essay where he talked about how he didn’t do well the first year. Here’s what he did to get better. And it was all in like from his perspective and it was great, right? But that impact was mostly internal for him and a bit on his team.

Not a world changing impact at all. And that’s okay. Um, we can’t all impact the whole world. That’s just not realistic. Colleges know that. Um, and then there are interesting stories everywhere. Everywhere. I’ve read essays where a student just read something like on the subway. That sparked an interesting thought for them.

They followed it through, or a student heard someone say something about common sense and they thought, Oh, what does that even mean? They followed it all the way through. It’s interesting. If you put us in your shoes and you show us how you thought through a concept, it might sound overwhelming. I really encourage you to just take some time, sit and quiet or wherever you think best and just reflect where have I had impactful moments?

What, what, Where was I? What was I doing? What did I learn? And this is hard. This is hard for all of us, but I challenge you as. Having those thoughts and as you’re putting this work in to turn off that part that we all have in our brain that wants to immediately jump on it and say, Oh, I don’t know if a college is gonna like that.

I don’t know if that’s impressive to a Harvard, I don’t know about this. If you can turn that off just for a few minutes while you’re just brainstorming and thinking, let yourself take that story that you could tell there to completion. Take a step back and think like, Okay, is this a good story? Would I want to read this?

And does it tell the readers more about who I am as a person? So all that to say this is a process and it requires some thought and you can absolutely do it. Um, some high level advice. Show don’t tell is another way of me saying tell a story. So sorry, I had to get that in there one more time. Um, remember that lists are for activities sections, not your essays.

Number one rule, really, I should put this at the top. For anything you write, be genuine. Show us who you are. Um, actually write about the extracurriculars that mean the most to you, not the ones that you think colleges are going to care the most about. Because I can tell you they do not have a list. They do not have a rubric of this club ranks above that club.

This activity looks more impressive. Someone, um, asked if out of school extracurriculars look more impressive than in school. No. What they want to see when you’re writing, it’s just more about who you are, what you like, what you enjoy. So it can be any. Type of activity. Just be genuine, be yourself. Also, sometimes we just have to start writing.

Um, I know for me sometimes just getting that first sentence out, I could, there’s like such a writer’s block I challenge you. Let go start writing and then be open to rewriting and, and revising and getting feedback. Um, there’s that saying good writing is rewriting. I’m a big fan of that thing. Um, and feedback I think is really, really helpful.

With any essay from your teachers, your peers, your family, your CollegeAdvisor, um, that is what we are here for. And then this might be annoying to say, I’m sorry if it is, but if you can have fun when you’re writing these, why not? Um, you’re writing about the things you love the most and are the most passionate about, and hopefully even with all of the work on your plate and all of the stress of this process, I hope you can find an ounce of fun at least, um, in, in writing about what you love.

So just make sure you join through that custom link. Uh, and, and real quick just before we get started, I have put some additional information in the Q&A tab. So yes, the character limit is meaning this. It’s150 words on the Common App. Um, different applications have different rules about that, but uh, the characters mean that, um, you can’t go, It’s gonna count each letter and digit that you type in, and I believe spaces are not included in that.

Punctuation? No, I don’t think punctuation is actually. Um, and then with the essays, you have a word count limit. So you get whole words, um, ranging from one word to 800 words depending on the, if it’s a supplement. The personal statement, which is the big essay that most people tend to write about extracurriculars in, um, is a minimum 250 words and a maximum of 650 words.

Uh, that is for the Common App. Every application portal has different, um, rules. Uh, and then also because it is a larger audience tonight, we ask that you do not vote on your, um, questions that you ask, cuz it disrupts the order of the Q&A tab. So, yes. Okay. So for our first question, this is a big question that everyone, uh, wants to know about.

What makes an essay about an extracurricular activity stand out? Love this question. What makes. Any essay stand out about an extracurricular or otherwise, is that I get to learn more about you. So if you can for a minute, put yourself in the shoes of the college admissions reader. They are reading a lot of essays, um, and they’re not always spending a whole lot of time on them.

So the more you can pull them in and engage them right at the beginning, the more likely they are to remember your essay at the end of the day. Um, and that’s, that’s what you want, right? So not here’s my spiel again, but if you can tell a story, put us in your shoes at the very beginning, only you have had that experience.

Only you have had those exact thoughts and feelings. So it’s immediately. Unique, even if it’s about something millions of people do, like golf, If it’s your specific experience with golf, it’s unique, it’s engaging. And I wanna know more. The essay is where people learn about you as a human and everywhere else in the application, the list, the transcript is you as a student on paper.

Um, so that’s, yes. Um, going on to the next question, more about the pros of the essays. A students asking should you use professional language or should the essays be casual? Good question. Um, an annoying thing about lawyers is that we say it depends a lot. Um, so I’m gonna say it depends and then I’m going to elaborate.

I would err on the. Of less casual. Um, you certainly want the essay to sound like yourself. Um, like if someone read the essay and then met with you and had a conversation, they could see like, Oh yeah, this person sounds on paper, similar to how they sound in person. Um, that does not mean that we would write LOL or whatever casual slang is popular these days.

I know it’s not lol. I know I’m old. Um. So find that balance between keeping your voice clear and prominent and not falling too casual. So, I mean, if you’re writing Google Docs and it underlines it as a word, that’s not a word, maybe um, swap that out, um, or explain why you’re using the word that you list.

Mm-hmm. Uh, kind of going off of that, versus asking, when you say that you do not have to write in full sentences in the activity section, do you mean to use bullet points? I don’t think bullet points all are even allowed, just like I don’t think you can enter them. Um, but you can use periods to abbreviate, um, before a full sentence.

Like you, you can take out the word the, uh, similar to like advice you get on, um, resume writing, if you’ve done that or Googled that. Um, yes, no bullets, but you can abbreviate. Mm-hmm. Uh, so I’m seeing a lot of, uh, specific questions, , about, um, various activities from, um, the first Lego League, um, versus, um, what are some other ones?

Dance and sports. Um, how do you know if a topic is good to write about, um, for your application? If you love it, if it’s meaningful to you, If you can tell me a story about something you have done in this activity, be it dance or legos, anything. And I can learn more about you as a human and how you would be as a friend to other students on campus or how you’d be as a student in class or a community member and maybe a new, a new city.

That’s it, y’all. There’s not, there’s not like a. This activity is good, this activity is bad. It can actually be anything. If you love it, if you have learned from it, if you have grown as a person in it and you can capture that in an essay, then it’s a great topic. Uh, going on to the next question, are there any activities that are cliche to write about?

I don’t think so. Um, I think, I think when essays come off as cliche, it has nothing to do with the topic and it’s coming off as cliche cuz students are maybe, you know, pulling together different cliche phrases in a way where it feels like, I don’t think the student talks like this. I think they’re saying this because they think.

I want to read that as an admissions reader, I think they’re, they’re writing this, hoping it’ll impress me instead of writing well from a genuine place’s passion. Mm-hmm. So there are no cliche topics. Only disingenuous. Mm-hmm. A good way to, um, see if your essay is coming off genuinely, um, is to have someone who knows you pretty well to read your essay and they can tell you if they think it sounds like you, if they think it represents you.

I know for me, with one of my essays, I wrote, um, something about identity, but it wasn’t really something about my identity per se, or nothing that I felt strongly about. And one of my teachers, uh, questioned whether or not it would be the best essay because it came off kind of bland and didn’t really connect with anything about my character and my personality.

So that can be a good way to see if your essays coming off cliche. Um, if it can apply to pretty much any other student and it doesn’t really relate to you. There are a lot of shared experiences, but if it can’t be directed back to you, that’s kind of where cliche or in genuineness, uh, comes in. Uh, going on to the next question.

Uh, should we write about an activity we did not enjoy? If you’re going to tell me why you didn’t, why you didn’t enjoy it, what you learned through that experience. Sure. Especially if that’s really relevant to what you wanna do in college. If that, if doing something you didn’t like, taught you a really big thing about yourself and your future goals, I would definitely write about it.

I would caution you to not frame, to not be overly negative and blaming the activity or the person who is leading it. Um, cause we don’t wanna come across too negative. Um, but yes, if you can, if you can tell me why you didn’t like it and how you drew. Uh, going on to the next question, a parent is asking, um, about the additional information section and if that is a good place to put, um, to write about activities that maybe weren’t on your activities list or if you wanted to use your essay for something else, would the additional information section be a good place to do that?

Um, is this, I’m not sure what additional information section there is. Um, so like there’s the Common App essay and then there’s the activities list and on like the, one of the last sections of the Common App application, and I’m not sure about other application portals. Um, but on the last section it asks is there anything else that you would like to add to your application?

And it gives. I, I wanna say it’s like 250 or six 50 words, but I’m not sure, Um, just to add any additional parts to your application. Usually people use it to like, explain maybe dips and grades or people have used it for activities, um, before. And then, um, it can be used to just expand on something, uh, in your application that wasn’t touched on anywhere else.

Thank you, McKenzie. Um, I understand the question now and, and I agree with everything you said. Um, you can use it for that. I, I caution my students against including activities just to have a long activities list. Um, so I think common epilepsy put 10 mm-hmm, um, if you genuinely have 12 extracurriculars that you.

Are so passionate about and they’re really impactful to you. Yeah, you, you can totally include it there. Um, I just, I wouldn’t feel any pressure to, to do that or to, to show colleges like I have done, I’ve set up world record in like, number of extracurriculars I’ve participated in, um, cuz they, I really are taking a holistic, uh, view of these applications and it’s not like maxing out the activity section, boost your points or anything.

There’s no point system. Um, so I hope that answers the question. You can, but I caution students to only include activities that they’re really genuinely engaged and excited. Mm-hmm. . Uh, going on to the next question, I’m gonna kind of combine these two, but does it need to be an activity or experience? We were recently involved in, and this kind of goes with the student’s question, asking if an activity that they were in, uh, in elementary, during elementary and middle school, but didn’t do in, um, high school can be written about because it inspired their, uh, in current interest.

Awesome question. I believe the Common App in the activity section wants you to talk about just high school activities with the essays, there’s a lot of freedom. Um, so that question about this thing I did in elementary or middle school that really informed what I wanna do. Yes. That sounds like a great starting point for your personal statement or for supplemental essay.

Absolutely. You can really write about anything in the essays. Um, doesn’t have to be just something you’ve done in high school. Uh, kind of going off of that, another student is asking, can they write about a camp that they attended and then sort to add on, uh, can we write about an activity that was only one day, such as a conference or a competition, uh, or an activity that we were not in for a long, that we were in for a short time?

Yes. Thank you. I actually, I had in my notes to address that one during the presentation and I skipped over it. Yes. If you go to a conference and it changes your life, where it tells you what you wanna study and what you don’t wanna study, yes. Please write about it. That sounds really important to your story, to knowing you as a person.

Absolutely. Camps similarly, um, you can include them on the activities list and or in an essay, uh, focusing on the impact that they’ve had on you. Uh, going on to the next question, um, just to kind of broadly talk about extracurriculars, cuz I’m seeing a lot of questions on it. Uh, a student is asking if there’s a disadvantage if you don’t have a large number of extracurriculars.

Uh, and another student is asking on the opposite end, Is it good to have a lot of extracurriculars? They just wanna know like, what is it about these extracurriculars? Yes. Yeah, good question. Be genuine. Don’t be like, me as a high school senior who joined every club my school offered because I thought that’s what colleges wanted to see.

It is not, that was a, I was pushing myself too hard and I was overextending myself. Go to the clubs and extracurriculars that excite you, that are interesting to you. and then just be genuine about that on your application. Colleges are really like, I know it can feel like they’re not, but they really genuinely are taking the holistic approach.

So they’re gonna look at your activities list, but they’re also gonna look at your transcript and they’re also gonna look at your essays. So if there’s something in, if you, if you’re like, Ooh, I’m worried I have only one or two extracurriculars. First of all, I would challenge you to look really closely at that list.

Uh, cause there are a lot of things on there, um, that you might not be thinking of as an extracurricular. You, I’m just scrolling back to it. Um, if you are engaged in any religious community, if you have any family responsibilities, um, so helping with siblings or grandparents, parents, if you have a job, there are so many things that you can put on that list.

Um, but first of all, if you think you don’t have enough, really go through that list closely and see if we might have more than you think. Um, and then just follow our natural passions and tell your story and your application. I don’t know, I’m forgetting there are two questions that, Did I get both of them?

McKenzie? Yeah. Like, is it, um, a disadvantage, uh, to have a low number of activities also, or a large number? It’s not a disadvantage, it’s just a fact. Um, and tell your story. If there’s a reason why that you think is worth sharing, do that in your personal statement or in the extra space. Um, but no, they’re, they’re looking at you as a whole person, not just as someone who should sign up for extracurriculars.

Yes. And for me, uh, cause I see that someone asking about the average, uh, on the Common App, you’re able to upload 10 activities and then they have a separate section for honors and awards. So you don’t need to use that space there. Um, a lot of people try to meet that, um, maximum number of 10, and we have other webinars that go over this, but you do not need to do that.

I believe that when I was applying to college back in 2019, oh my gosh, um, my senior year I had about, I wanna say seven activities on my list and I got into Cornell University early decisions. So it’s more so about what your, um, commitment and your involvement, even if it was a one day thing, it’s like what did you do in that?

Why was it meaningful? Getting, uh, across that point in your application overall is more important than the number of activities that you have. Though a lot of people do try and meet that number of 10 just because the space is available. Um, the coalition application, I believe only goes up to eight activities.

So if you wanted to submit more than that, I’d recommend the Common App, Uh, different, uh, portals, like the UCs, I don’t remember what they do, but some applications don’t allow you to submit anything. Like they don’t really ask for much information. So it really depends on, um, what schools and what application portal you’re using.

Uh, going on to the next question, cause I’m seeing it come up a lot, students are just really curious about, um, whether or not the, the activity or the essay needs to be related to your major or career interest. Great question. Um, I think first of all, uh, it depends a little bit on the prompt. Uh, if the prompt is a supplemental essay and it says, Tell us about an extracurricular you’ve done.

There’s maybe a little more leeway, but I think even there, you can bring it back to your interest somehow. It might not be obvious. Um, I read an essay the other day that related, um, archery to forensic science. Right? Those are not related, but the student learned certain things in archery, like patience, working independently, attention to detail.

Those are all super relevant in forensic science. And she made a really convincing argument that they are, and because of this extracurricular, she’s done, she’s now better prepared to be a forensic science. So I’m telling you, there is a connection there because in everything we do as humans, we are learning and we are growing.

And if we’re learning and growing, then we’re getting something that is going to be useful in a big new chapter like college. Uh, going along with that, uh, there are gonna be multiple essays in your application. So you have the personal statement, and I’m going off the Common App again, but the personal statement is big essay, um, that you find under the, my Common App, uh, section of the Common App.

Uh, and then you have the supplemental essays, which is found under each individual college, under the My Colleges section. And then, so, um, the personal statement, um, is a good place to write about this. Supplements can be a good place to write about, um, majors, uh, career interests, just because schools typically are asking the why school question, like, why do you wanna attend there?

Why do you wanna do this program? So that can be a good place to explain that and then maybe talk about a different activity or experience or whatever else in your personal statement. Um, but if schools aren’t asking that question or if you don’t have the space to talk about an extracurricular there, um, you can always, um, Use your personal statement.

And then also some schools will even ask you what activities you would like to participate in college and why. So that can be a good space to say like, Hey, I participated in this in high school and I’d like to continue. Um, that’s another space. It all makes more sense when you actually see it on the application.

Uh, and it does not need to be, your essay does not need to be related to your career or anything. I wrote about a college prep, uh, club that I started at my high school and I was applying pre-med and public health. Uh, I did eventually switch into the education side, but um, initially I got into pre-med and public health with my, um, essay talking about.

Education. There we go. Uh, but my supplements, were talking more about my interest in health and health. Uh, so, yeah. Uh, going on to the next question, a student is asking, should a person write about, uh, extracurricular activities or life experiences in an essay which would be more engaging and memorable?

I’m sorry, McKenzie, you cut out at the very beginning. Yes. Uh, so a student asking should a person write about extracurricular activities or life experiences in the essays, uh, which would be more engaging?

I’m curious how an extracurricular is different from a life experience. Um, in that everything we do is a life experience. If the question is about, is it better to write about an extracurricular, like a formal club or something that happened in my personal? No. Like none is, neither is better than the other.

Uh, write about what’s gonna, tell me more about you. You want the admissions readers to look at your entire application and see like, Oh, I know a bit about who this student is. I understand where they’re coming from and where they want to go, but they make, it makes sense. They’ve told their story throughout the application.

Um, so you don’t have to write about your extracurricular and your essay. Um, you can absolutely write about personal things. Um, I just got a, a chat question about writing about weaknesses being vulnerable. Yes. You can do all of that. Um, just, you know, frame it how we’ve been talking about. Tell the story.

What have you learned? How do you feel it’s prepared you, um, for where you want to go? Yes. And I’m seeing a question in the chat asking, Do I have to limit my essay to six 50 words? Is there a drawback to exceeding the limit? So on the Common App, it is going to cut you off after six 50 words, so you won’t be able to go over that.

Um, we recommend writing your essays in like a separate Google Doc or Word doc. Um, and then, uh, cutting it down, editing it there, and then, um, copying and pasting it into your, uh, application. Uh, and then it’ll show you whether or not you, um, your essay fits in or not. And you can like check the word count.

You need a minimum of 250 words to be able to submit your Common App. And, but you have a max at six 50, so there’s no way to exceed it. And on that, Um, we know that the admissions process is hard for, um, is overwhelming for parents and students alike, especially when trying to figure out how to get these essays down.

Um, cut down the word count, figure out what’s even right about and make the essays as strong as possible. So yeah, so’s scan the QR code on the screen to find out more. Uh, now back to the Q&A. So I am seeing a student asking about, I just had the question. Um, Okay. Uh, similar to like the, um, clubs that are less formal. A student is asking, Do colleges consider hobbies as extracurriculars? I would want to know more.

I’d want to have a conversation with a student asking this. Absolutely. You can write about a hobby in an essay. A hundred percent. Cause you can write about anything. Um, if, if you’re wanting to include it on the activities list, I would just wanna hear more about what it is. Um, on Common App, at least they do ask questions about how long you’ve been doing it, how many hours per week you spend on it.

Um, so if it’s a hobby that you’re spending like 10, 15 hours a week on, I think that’s a strong argument to include it there. Um, and then you just wanna be thought of what, which drop down category you select for it. Um, so yes, you could, and you can absolutely write about it in an essence. Yes, it’s a long list of things that can be counted as, um, As your activities list, including family responsibilities, which is even more broad than a hobby.

So, um, just it’s really more so about your commitment and how well you’re able to explain it. And then also for different things, if you wanted a extra like voucher for them or extra verification, um, you can ask someone to write you a recommendation for them if you have the additional space. Some schools limit who or how many people you can ask, um, for a letter of recommendation.

But if you have the extra space to get a recommender who maybe watched you the hobby, that is a great, um, way to just get the extra verification in terms of whether or not colleges verify how many hours and stuff you participate in them or how many activities you’re really participating in. I’d recommend just not lying.

Um, and then just try and be truthful. If you can’t quantify how many hours you were in it, you can put like, how many days a week? Um, how many. How long you were in the activity. Um, just give a general idea of what your participation was like. And if it seems like it’s too many activities to where it doesn’t sound realistic, then maybe you can explain it in the additional information section.

But usually if you were able to accomplish that many tasks and the time you were given, then you should, you should be good. But if it, you’re saying like you did 150 hours a week on an activity, that’s probably not likely. Cuz 40 hours a week is like the average working hours and you’re full-time students.

Uh, so just keep that in mind. . Yeah, I tell my students like, Look, you want the right order of magnitude. Mm-hmm. . Um, and it’s okay to estimate on average how many hours per week, but it needs to be in the ballpark. It can’t be 150 hours per week unless somehow you are doing that. And then you should definitely write about that in an essay.

Uh, going on to the next question, should you talk about an activity that you quit?

If I can learn something interesting about you, I’d wanna know why you quit, um, what you did after you quit, what you learned about yourself. You might be starting to notice a theme to my answers, um, because that’s the goal of these essays is who are you as a person and how do you think, how do you grow?

How do you learn? Um, are you able to introspect? and reflect on a time and say like, Oh, I quit dance and here’s, here’s why. Here’s what I learned about myself. Um, again, staying away from the negative, like dance is a horrible activity. I would not say something like that. Um, focus on you and what you learned.

Mm-hmm. , Uh, going on to the next question is students asking how many activities do you recommend we, uh, should write about? Is there a minimum? Um, I guess that would depend on the, if it’s the essay or the activities list. Can you kind of touch on both? Yes, absolutely. Um, we’ve talked about the activities list, um, a bit.

So I’ll, I’ll be brief there. You’re limited to 10 on the Common App. You do not have to have 10. McKenzie, I think she had seven and got an early decision before now, like a rock star. Um, so you do not need to fill that in an essay. I, I would, I would tend to write about fewer activities, maybe even one, maybe even one moment in that activity.

Um, because the activities, the activities list is there, um, to see how, like how many things you’ve done. The essay is there not for that at all, cuz that’s what the activities section is for. The essay is there for me to learn more about you as a person. So if you’re spending a lot of your 650 words, well listing all the, the activities we’ve done, it’s kind of a waste of your space.

Uh, so when writing in an essay, I would maybe talk about just. Um, if, if two are related, um, or if there’s a reason you wanna talk about two. It’s not a hard and fast rule. Um, but just be thoughtful about why would, why would I write about more than one? And how does writing about more than one tell the reader more about me that they can’t get from my activities list?

Mm-hmm, uh, if it’s starting to sound more like a list or it gets a little bit off topic, that’s where writing about more than one activity and an essay can get a little bit difficult and then you aren’t able to expand as much as you would like to. If you just talked about one, maybe two activities or even a moment, like Anna said.

Um, it’s specificity is really good in essays and having multiple things to talk about limits that, um, y’all can check out our other webinars. There are even some. Workshop webinars where we go over specific ways to write the essay, different ways to edit it. Uh, you can check out our webinars on writing about a passion project, which overlaps a lot with this topic.

Um, and you can just switch it out for like an activity that you’re doing, even if it wasn’t something that you started. So that is also a good place to look and I’m also seeing some questions related to the admissions process in general. Like when should you start? Um, and uh, where do recommenders go?

You can check out our other webinars by typing in those keywords, like recommender or activities list or admissions process, um, on our website at app.CollegeAdvisor.com to find those more specific questions. And in terms of being able to save the application, the application does save as you go. I would just recommend with the essays that you would, um, do it in a separate doc just so you can edit it and see it a bit easier and even share it with someone else if you wanted them to read over it.

Um, and the activities list, you can just. You can do in the Common App, but then also having like a spreadsheet or a resume on the side, um, for you to look off of, uh, going on to the next question. Um, Okay. Uh, a student is asked, oh, if there’s any questions in the chat that you wanted to get to, please feel free to read them out and respond.

Um, uh, but how, uh, what are admissions officers looking for in an essay, particularly about the extracurriculars? And another student is asking, um, what are some common mistakes you see within the, within, uh, applications or within nasa? Yeah, in essays about extracurriculars and about anything readers, admissions readers are looking to get to know you as a person.

How do you think about the world? And it makes sense that they want to, to know that. Because you’re applying to be a student at their university where you’re going to come and participate in activities and participate in class. So they want to know how, how do you see the world, how do you engage with it?

What would you be like as a student here on campus? Um, and what was, Sorry McKenzie, I don’t remember the other question. Um, what are some common mistakes? I believe somebody, uh, is putting like top three mistakes and writing essays about extracurriculars. Okay. Um, top three might be hard for me to commit to cause I’m an indecisive person.

Um, mistakes I see are, I think that biggest one is just not going deep. Not, not introspecting. That’s when they’re coming off as cliche as if you’re writing this, um, cuz you want to impress me. Um, and doing this is hard. It. Like it does require. Why don’t to scare you if you can do it. And it’s helpful to do the work up front by thinking it through.

Like genuinely take some time before you start writing to think about what extracurricular is the most meaningful to me and why. I’m telling you, I don’t think every student does that. And I think putting in even just a few minutes to think about that before you start writing will really, uh, level up your essay.

Mm-hmm, uh, since we are coming up on time, is there any last advice that you would like to give to students or any questions again that you see that you wanna answer? My advice to students is that you can do this. I know it’s a long process and I was there, I remember how stressful it can be. Use your support network.

Um, Hopefully that includes CollegeAdvisor. Um, use your teachers, use your peers, your family. Um, it’s intimidating to ask people to read what we’ve written and it is so worth it to get feedback on your essays. Um, so that’s my number one advice. Be open to feedback, be open to reworking things, um, and then be you show your true self.

Use your real voice when you write and, you’re going to be fabulous and we cannot wait to work with all of you individually. Mm-hmm. So thank you for that wonderful answer. School can be a drab place. For those who are not interested in one’s own education, school can be bleak. However, if you are active in extracurricular activities at your school, you can enjoy your education much more. Why is this? Joining in on extracurricular activities have been shown to improve academic performance, give the opportunity to learn a variety of skills, provide a sense of commitment, and create a wider circle of friends.

According to The Educator , “Studies have shown that students who participate in co-curricular activities have a marked improvement in the grades. This can be attributed to skills they learn such as better time management to accommodate their hobbies and class activities, better organizational skills and a boost in their self-esteem. Skills learnt in clubs such as debate can be applied in the classroom too, as the students learn how to express themselves better” (Jackson and Jackson, 2018). Though it may seem out of place to say such activities as being part of the Harry Potter Club, or something similar, would benefit one’s grades, it is scientifically proven to do so.

Extracurricular activities have been linked to the gaining of various skills. The Mountain Heights Academy expresses this finding: “These activities can also work to build professional skills that a classroom alone cannot always foster. A leadership-oriented club, for example, will help students to learn essential skills in management and delegation, while a debate or speech club will provide additional public speaking practice for students. In short, extracurricular activities can arm students with many of the skills future employers will be looking for” (Mountainheightsacademy.org, 2018). So, these activities can be seen as a necessary side education that fills in the gaps of our primary education.

Commitment is difficult to inculcate in the youth, but extracurricular activities seem to foster it. According to The Educator , “Students who participate in co-curricular activities have a sense of commitment to whatever they are involved in. This is because as they take part in whatever sports or club activity they are a member of, they have to commit to it and give their all, and this commitment extends to all other areas of their lives” (Jackson and Jackson, 2018). Students can be taught about commitment, but learning it firsthand through extracurricular activities is the best method of teaching commitment.

Schools can be lonely places, and extracurricular activities provide a venue for more social interaction. The Mountain Heights Academy agrees with this notion: “Extracurriculars are not solely about imparting stronger professional skills and supplementing education. These programs are also fun and offer students the opportunity to spend time with others of similar interests. Students can meet friends from different social groups by joining a sports team, student government or debate” (Mountainheightsacademy.org, 2018). It may seem out of place, but by making more friends through extracurricular activities, students can improve their overall academic experience.

Extracurricular activities are not only for enjoyment. They contribute significantly to the improvement of grades, to learning various skills, to garnering a sense of commitment, and to increasing one’s social circle. All of this makes one’s academic experience fulfilling and enriching.

Benefits of Extracurricular Activities: Why They’re So Important

It’s not all grades and test scores. When you’re applying to college, what happens outside of the classroom is just as important as what happens in it. 

Colleges look for students who will excel in their fields of choice. While your grades can show your aptitude in subjects, it’s the passions you pursue on your own that really demonstrate your potential in your chosen career. That’s why extracurricular activities matter so much in the college admissions process.

What Are Extracurricular Activities?

In a nutshell, extracurriculars are activities you do outside of your coursework. However, there are academic societies and organizations that qualify as extracurriculars, such as Google Science Fair. School clubs, athletic teams, internships, theater, music groups and bands, and volunteer work are other examples of extracurriculars .

Paying jobs and personal projects, such as starting a blog or teaching courses, also qualify. Colleges will see family responsibilities, like babysitting younger siblings or working in your family grocery, as activities too. Be sure to include these activities on your application, especially if they prevent you from participating in more traditional extracurriculars.

With the current pandemic, extracurricular opportunities are limited, but there are many activities that you can do from home . They include online foreign language discussion groups, starting an online zine, or phone banking for politicians or fundraisers.

Not everything you do outside the classroom is an extracurricular activity, though. What is an Extracurricular Activities supplemental essay?

Extracurricular supplemental essays are one of the most common kinds of supplemental essays. As you can probably guess, they ask you to write about an extracurricular activity—obviously!

But you might be wondering why schools ask you to expand on an extracurricular activity when you’ve already taken the time to curate your Common Application activities list. Since the Common App activities list only gives you 150 characters to explain your activities, Extracurricular essays are the perfect opportunity to show how you’ve interacted with your community through one of your activities.

Simply describing your extracurricular activity, however, probably isn’t enough. Admissions officers don’t need to hear about the logistics of your club soccer team's travel schedule or the detailed interpersonal dynamics of the restaurant you work at. They’ve heard those stories again and again.

What they really need to hear about is you . As a high school student, the way you spend your time outside of school says a lot about you. Admissions officers know that your time is limited and precious. Seeing the activities or causes you’ve dedicated yourself to reveals a lot about what’s important to you.

Extracurricular essay strategy.

As with any supplemental essay, it’s important to approach Extracurricular supplementals strategically. In particular, your Extracurricular essays should do two main things.

Show magnitude, impact, and reach.

When admissions officers evaluate an applicant’s activities list or Extracurricular supplemental essay, they are looking at these three criteria. Let’s take a second to define each term:

Magnitude: How big of a deal is your extracurricular?

Impact: How are you and others affected by your extracurricular?

Reach: How many people do you reach by participating in your extracurricular?

Now, your Extracurricular essays don’t have to be manifestos about how great you are at your activity. In fact, they shouldn’t be.

But when it comes to your supplemental essay strategy, a good way to approach your Extracurricular essays is by writing meaningfully about how your extracurricular has helped you have an impact on the world. Since colleges want to admit students who positively influence the world around them, your extracurricular essays can help you show how you do just that.

Reflect on personal meaning and influence.

The best extracurricular essays are ones that revolve around personal meaning and influence.

Colleges ask you to respond to Extracurricular prompts because they want to know more about how your activities meaningfully impact you and the world around you.

A supplemental essay that only goes into details about your activity without reflecting on its meaning or influence doesn’t do enough to make your case for admission.

Let’s look at a quick example.

In Debate Club, I led my team to victory in the final round. We were debating about climate change solutions, and I brought it my all.

While that example elaborates on an extracurricular activity, it doesn’t make any effort to reflect on why the activity or the writer’s actions were important. Let’s look at a better excerpt:

My Debate Club was in the finals, and I was our last hope. But we were in luck: the topic was “climate change solutions,” something I’m deeply passionate about. By harnessing the support of my team and the weight of my environmental activism, we didn’t just win the finals. I also became more confident in my ability to advocate for change.

This second version speaks more to meaning. It goes beyond a simple explanation of the activity to expand on 1) why the activity was important and 2) what it meant to the writer.

Now that you have a few strategies under your belt, it’s time to start writing.

How to Write an Extracurricular Supplemental Essay

Step 1: Read the prompt closely.

If you’ve read any of our other supplemental essay guides , you might be familiar with this step. You may even be sick of hearing it. But it’s important to carefully dissect the prompt so you know exactly what admissions officers will be expecting you to address.

In the case of Extracurricular Activities essays, reading the prompt is essential. I’ll use the Vanderbilt and Colorado College prompts as an example.

Notice that the Vanderbilt prompt asks you to “briefly elaborate on how one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences has influenced you ,” while the Colorado College prompt simply says, “Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences.”

So what’s the difference? The Vanderbilt prompt asks you specifically to discuss how your activity has influenced you, but the Colorado College prompt gives you more freedom with what part of your activity you can focus on.

Step 2: Choose your extracurricular activity based on the values, impact, or lessons you want to show.

Remember that your personal statement, supplemental essays, and other application components work together to form a cohesive application narrative . Your essays should each show one of your best strengths, and together they should communicate your overall personal brand.

As you choose which extracurricular activity to write about, be sure that you’re thinking strategically about what you want your activity to say about you to an admissions officer.

Here’s a chart that might help you out. I’ve filled out an example first row so you can get the hang of it. Try filling in your own information to see what sticks.

Step 3: Outline.

Okay, let’s say that you’re the debate team member we met earlier and you’re working on the Colorado College prompt. Since the prompt doesn’t specify which aspect of your extracurricular you should focus on, you get to choose what you think will be best.

Let’s also say that your personal statement already talks about your role on a team, so you want to supplement your personal statement (this is a supplemental essay, after all!) by focusing instead on how this activity has advanced your passion for climate justice.

Before you begin writing, it might be a good idea to outline what you want to write about to make sure your essay covers everything you want it to.

Here’s an example outline to get you thinking.

I. Introduction: Introduce the activity and lay out what’s at stake.

II. Body: Discuss impact, personal meaning, or reach.

III. Conclusion: Reflect on the activity and drive home how it showcases your chosen strength.

Clearly organizing your essay in a way that gives concrete details while focusing on meaning will help admissions officers understand the importance of your activity.

Extracurricular supplemental essay mistakes

Writing a thinly-veiled Academic Interest essay instead of an Extracurricular essay

Because you’re applying to college to be a student, some applicants think that you need to write about an extracurricular experience related to your academics. This kind of essay might include topics like debate, robotics club, Model United Nations, coding experience, independent research, and more.

Co-curricular activities that are related to your academic interests aren’t off-limits. But you do have to be careful not to overstate the academic importance of your activity. If admissions offices want to know more about one of your academic interests, then they’ll ask you to answer an Academic Interest prompt.

But because they’ve asked you to write an Extracurricular supplemental, then you’ll need to keep your focus on the “extra” part of “extracurricular.”

Going into too much detail at the expense of personal meaning.

I know—it’s hard not to unleash your passion and expertise when writing about your favorite extracurricular activity. Doing so can demonstrate its importance to you and your knowledge of the subject.

But the problem with going into too much detail is that it can outshine the true purpose of a supplemental essay, which is to show personal meaning and school fit.

Focusing on a superficial “non-extracurricular.”

If you’re not quite sure what extracurricular to write about, let me give you a quick warning. You need to write about a real extracurricular activity. Some students want to put a creative twist on the prompt and focus on an “extracurricular” that is more of a personal interest than an actual activity.

A good example of a superficial “non-extracurricular” would be an essay about going on long drives while listening to music. Sure, you might be able to write an interesting essay about that. But that kind of topic doesn’t fulfill the expectations of a supplemental essay, and it doesn’t give you the information you need to make your case for admission.

Extracurricular Supplemental Essay Example

Example essay: the journalist.

Colorado College: Please briefly elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities or work experiences. (no more than 250 words)

As an impressionable six-year-old, I watched Meryl Streep-portrayed Miranda Priestly shape fashion history with a single word of disgust. I longed for my words to have such an impact.

Now, as an editor-in-chief myself, I oversee daily operations of The Hallway , my high school’s newspaper. Instead of shaping global fashion trends, I impact my community by ensuring everyone stays informed.(( The writer highlights their community impact.))

My place as editor-in-chief was solidified when, in March of last year, we published a breaking story. After a tip to our newspaper email address, a fellow reporter and I uncovered an academic dishonesty scandal. We conducted interviews, dug into school files, and reviewed old test keys to discover the cheating. My reporter wrote the story, and I edited it and put it on the front page. Our story became so big that it was republished in our city’s local newspaper.(( This paragraph points to the student’s reach. They didn’t just impact their school community—their efforts also reached their city.))

Leading my team through this investigation taught me just how important journalism is.(( This paragraphs reflects on the meaning of the activity to the writer.)) Even when people might be upset with what you write, what’s most important is the truth. People can’t make decisions if they’re uninformed about the facts. And reporters can’t investigate and write those stories without the support of a leader who’s willing to put in the work, too.

I doubt I’ll ever predict what we’ll be wearing next spring. But I know that my words will continue to have a deep impact on my community, and I can’t wait to find the next big story at The Catalyst. ((The writer offers a brief but specific reference to the institution.))

Whether you’ve completed a passion project you’re proud of or won a robotics award, you might be thinking about writing about extracurriculars in your college application.

Extracurriculars are an important part of the college admissions process for a reason.

Your out-of-the-classroom participation shows admissions officers what you care about, what you’re talented at, and what you’re committed to. How you choose to spend your non-academic time in high school will help them predict what you’d be involved in on their campus.

But there’s an art to writing about extracurriculars in a college application. Too much detail or too little explanation can lose admissions officers in the mix.

In this post, we’ll share our best tips—the ones that our clients have the most success with—for writing about passion projects and extracurricular activities in your personal statement and supplementals.

Why write about extracurriculars?

You already put your extracurricular activities in your Common App activities section, so why use up precious essay space elaborating on them?

While admissions officers can see your activities list, they don’t always realize the full context or importance of every single one of your extracurriculars.

If there’s an activity or project that’s especially important to you, it can be worthwhile to elaborate. But if you’re going to use your essay space to write about an extracurricular, you need to make it count. You might choose to write about an extracurricular or project for the following four reasons.

Reason #1: To expand on the details an extracurricular

The 150 characters allotted in your Common App activities list isn’t much. You can convey the basics, but if you want to elaborate at all, you’re going to need more space.

Writing your personal statement or a supplemental about an extracurricular lets you write more in-depth about an extracurricular that’s important to you . Expanding on what you did and why it was meaningful will help admissions officers see why your activity mattered.

Reason #2: To highlight an impressive accomplishment

Let’s say you won a national competition, had a small role on a TV show, or raised a lot of money for an organization you care about. Or maybe you developed an independent research project and published it in a prestigious publication like The Concord Review or invented something and won the Regeneron Science Talent Search .

Your admissions officer wants to know about those accomplishments.

Remember that you want to give admissions officers a compelling story to tell committee about you. Your job is to make their job easier. Impressive extracurriculars can make you more memorable to admissions officers and can set you apart from the sea of other equally-qualified applicants.

Reason #3: To demonstrate magnitude, reach, and impact

Anything you write about an extracurricular, no matter where that writing appears in your application, should work to show the magnitude, reach, and impact of the activity.

Why? Because college admissions is all about outcomes. The more you can show that you’ve positively impacted yourself and the world around you, the better.

Admissions officers want to invite students to their communities who will have an impact, both before and after they graduate. Showing that you’re already impacting those around you can make it clear that you’re ready to take advantage of all the opportunities the school has to offer.

Reason #4: To weave your extracurriculars into a broader story that says something about who you are

Especially when writing about extracurriculars in your personal statement, you can use your activity as a springboard for writing about something else that’s important to you.

You’ve probably chosen your project or activity because it’s interesting and meaningful to you.

Extracurriculars can be an organic gateway to tell admissions officers about a more vulnerable part of who you are. Choosing to write about them in your personal statement or supplementals can emphasize how important they are to you, and it can help draw admissions officers’ attention to a core part of yourself .

Should I Write About My Extracurriculars in My Personal Statement

Refresher: what is a personal statement.

Personal statements —also called college essays or Common App essays—are the main piece of writing in your college application, and they typically range from 520 to 650 words.

They are tricky to write because you’ve probably never written (or even read!) one before. (We work on these with students every year , and trust us, they’re tough!)

So what’s the purpose of a personal statement, anyway?

Personal statements are meaningful reflections on an important part of your life. Their purpose is to give admissions officers insight into who you are. They are genuine, often vulnerable pieces of writing. And most importantly, the narrative you create with your personal statement should compel admissions officers to admit you.

It’s a lot to ask of a 650-word essay.

But writing about a passion project or extracurricular can be a fantastic way to communicate your interests, showcase your talents, and advocate for your admission.

With that in mind, let’s go over three important strategies for writing your personal statement about an extracurricular.

Convey Your Strengths (But Avoid Bragging)

All outstanding personal statements communicate a core strength to the admissions committee.

Think about it: when an essay clearly conveys a strength, it’s easier for an admissions officer to understand what the applicant would bring to the campus community.

Your strengths don’t have to be explicit, but they should color the overall theme of your essay.

In our work with students, some of the most common strengths that surface include intellectual curiosity, artistry, teamwork, wisdom, and problem-solving.

The key to writing a good personal statement is finding a balance between conveying your strengths and being authentic and vulnerable. You want your strengths to be clear, but you don’t want to come across as bragging.

Instead, the point is to show a genuine strength while still appearing real and human.

Focus on Outcomes

Personal statements about extracurriculars can go awry when they get too caught up in the details of the activity.

Remember: admissions officers don’t need to know every single second of how you spent your time. You want to hit only the key points that create a seamless story so you can spend the rest of your essay reflecting on meaning and outcomes.

Whatever your project is, consider these questions: What did you learn? How did you grow? How did you help others learn or grow? What did your project do to make the world a better place?

Emphasizing the outcomes will keep your essay focused on what matters most.

Implicitly and Explicitly Answer the “Why” Questions

The “why” questions are the questions that admissions officers are bound to have when they read your personal statement.

Once you introduce them to your passion project or extracurricular, they’ll wonder a lot of things, such as: Why did you choose this activity? Why did your activity matter to you? Why did it matter to others? And—the big question— why should it make me more compelled to admit you?

This last question is key.

Simply telling your admissions officer about your passion project or extracurricular is one thing. But the question you can’t loose sight of is how your passion project or extracurricular demonstrates that you should be admitted. You want to preemptively answer these types of questions in your statement. 

That doesn’t mean that you should come right out and say, “My passion project about educational equity means that I should be admitted.” Definitely don’t do that!

But it does mean writing about your activity in a way that draws on your strengths and outcomes so your admissions officers can envision you joining their campus community. Put another way, every essay you write should give your admission officer a clear reason to admit you to their campus.

Should I Write About My Extracurriculars in My Supplemental Essays

Refresher: what are supplemental essays.

Supplemental essays are additional essays some schools require applicants to write. At around 50 to 500 words, they’re typically shorter than a personal statement.

Since supplemental essays only go to one school, they’re the perfect opportunity for you to make the case that you’re a good fit for the school and its academic community. Your goal in a supplemental essay is to show values-based and academic alignment with the school in question.

Supplemental prompts often fall within a few standardized categories that ask questions like “Why are you interested in attending X?” or “How have you contributed to your community, and how will you contribute to ours?”

One of the most popular supplemental prompt types is the extracurricular activities essay . In these prompts, schools ask you to elaborate on one of your extracurricular activities. If your extracurricular relates to academics, you might also respond to an academic interest prompt.

In short, you’re allowed to write about your passion project or extracurricular in a supplemental essay whenever you feel it’s appropriate.

Make Relevant Connections to the School

Whether you’re responding to an extracurricular activity, academic interest, community, or other prompt type, strong supplemental essays often make explicit connections to the school.

Why do they do this?

Because that’s how you show that you’re a natural fit for the campus community.

It also shows admissions officers that you’ve done your research and are invested as an applicant.

Let’s say you have a passion project about Type 1 Diabetes . Through your research, you learned about Dr. Damiano’s ground-breaking Type 1 Diabetes research at Boston University. Now you have the perfect connection to work into your BU supplemental essay .

Emphasize Meaning and Impact

We’ve already gone over the importance of focusing on the outcomes of your extracurricular, but it’s worth restating.

Emphasizing the meaning and impact of your activity is especially important in supplemental essays because they’re shorter, more purpose-driven in response to a prompt, and often more straightforward than a personal statement.

Take this example essay (“Community Essay: The DIY-ers”) in response to one of MIT’s prompts. The applicant writes about a passion project, building a telescope, but doesn’t stop there. They also go on to explain the meaning of the project (how it helped them connect with their family) and the impact (how it shaped their career goals as an aspiring environmental engineer).

So as you write, be sure to draw out the meaning and impact of your activity for your admissions officers. Don’t leave the guesswork up to them.

Think About Values

The final way to take your supplemental essays to the next level is to think in terms of values.

If you’re choosing to pursue a passion project or spend a lot your free time time on an extracurricular, then chances are it’s something you value.

Use that to your advantage by aligning with values at the institutions you’re applying to. You can do this in any supplemental essay, but your case will be much stronger when you have a passion project or extracurricular to emphasize your alignment.

Perhaps you completed a passion project looking at corporate sustainability practices —something you’re really invested in. Well, let’s also say that you’re interested in the University of Pennsylvania because of Wharton’s Business, Energy, Environment, and Sustainability concentration.

Because of your passion project, you now have the ability to make a very natural, compelling case that your values line up with Penn’s. Showing your commitment to similar values will help admissions officers imagine all the ways you’d contribute to and benefit from their community.
