If you don't have the subject knowledge, you can still apply for the course but we strongly encourage you to undertake bridging studies to gain the knowledge:English, or Literature, or English and Literature Extension, or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 & 4, C)

Writing is more central to our culture than ever before. The communication revolution demands written content—on the page, on the screen, and in new and evolving forms and spaces. Writers, storytellers and experts with nuanced and creative language are needed to provoke, entertain and connect to audiences in expanding ways. QUT offers the largest and most comprehensive undergraduate writing course in South-East Queensland with the broadest range of units on offer. Within the BFA structure, you gain the deepest possible access to this knowledge.

The course is taught by highly experienced published authors and scholars. Visits and guest lectures from writers, editors and publishers will help you gain a unique perspective on writing as a vocation, and provide access to the industry and national writing communities. Combine creative writing with a second study area for greater career flexibility and opportunities in other industries. Consider a double degree with:

• business to develop your career as a creative writer, publishing professional or public relations consultant
• law to use your skills for a career as an in-house lawyer, solicitor in private practice, policy adviser, intellectual property lawyer or crime writer.

If you are looking to apply your creative abilities to education settings or the teaching profession you have some options.  You can complete your creative writing course first and then follow with a Master of Teaching in early childhood, primary or secondary education.*  You can undertake a double degree in secondary education at the same time as your creative writing degree.

This program features a hands-on, studio-based learning approach that provides depth of knowledge in your chosen study area. You collaborate with students and teaching staff from across disciplines to reflect industry practice, work on real-world projects briefed by real clients, and get career planning assistance to help you on your creative journey. With transdisciplinary project-driven capstone experiences in your final year, you are prepared for a highly professional and entrepreneurial approach to your creative practice. In the creative writing major, you work intensively in a number of areas including novels and short stories, creative non-fiction, poetry, corporate writing and editing, manuscript development, and new and emergent forms. You can also take complementary studies from creative industries or other faculties across the university.

Combine writing skills and law for roles such as an in-house lawyer, solicitor in private practice, policy adviser, intellectual property lawyer, or crime writer. This double degree prepares you to work as a professional creative writer, as a barrister or solicitor in private practice, or to practise with large companies, in government agencies, or as a policy adviser. Through the combination of creative writing with law, you will enhance your employability in your chosen field, whether in the legal fraternity or as a creative practitioner. You can advise on the legalities in the publishing or creative writing industries, or in relation to copyright or intellectual property law, or work as an editor of legal-related publications or in a position specialising in law in the publishing industry. Immerse yourself in the creative writing major with up to 16 discipline units and gain in-depth knowledge in your specialisation. Your law degree component comprises nineteen core units and eight law elective units, which can include a third study area as a minor or electives from across QUT.

In order to complete this course, you must complete a total of 528 credit points made up of 192 credit points from the Bachelor of Fine Arts and 336 credit points from the Bachelor of Laws (Honours).

Why choose this course?

You will complete the requirements for two separate degrees in four and a half years. The course consists of units in fine arts and education.

Students are prepared as teachers with specialist understandings for secondary school learners in two teaching and learning discipline areas, with one teaching area being English, which is determined by your fine arts major, creative writing. For the other teaching area you can choose one of: 

• mathematics.

QUT offers the largest and most comprehensive undergraduate creative writing course in South-East Queensland with the broadest range of units on offer.

Within the Bachelor of Fine Arts structure, you will gain the deepest possible access to this knowledge. You will graduate with advanced writing and communication capabilities as well as analytic and editorial experience.

You will work intensively on your writing in a number of forms and genres including novels, short stories, creative non-fiction, youth writing, media writing, poetry, digital media, editing and scriptwriting and new and emergent forms. In addition, you will build specialist writing skills for professional applications via deep engagement with industry contexts. You can also undertake project work to write a sustained work in a genre of your choice.

The course is taught by highly experienced published authors and scholars. Visits and guest lectures from writers, editors and publishers will help you gain a unique perspective on writing as a vocation and provide access to the industry and national writing communities.

A thriving on-campus literary culture and connections with festivals and local publishing houses will keep you connected with fellow travelers and industry tastemakers as you develop your craft.

Work Integrated Learning

The Bachelor of Fine Arts is a specialist discipline-based degree characterised by intense studio and/or project-based practice. In general, graduates from this course are equipped to function as ‘creative artists’ with capabilities relevant to their chosen major.

This course meets professional teaching standards for the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, and Queensland College of Teachers and graduates are eligible to apply for teacher registration.

Course structure.

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) / Bachelor of Fine Arts is comprised of 240 credit points from the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) and 192 credit points from the Bachelor of Fine Arts.

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) component is comprised of:

• 144 credit points of core Education units.
• 24 credit points of Curriculum, Pedagogy and Assessment units that align with the chosen Fine Arts major.
• A 72 credit point Education minor (Second Teaching Area)

The Bachelor of Fine Arts component is comprised of:

• 24 credit points of core Fine Arts units.
• A 168 credit point Fine Arts major (acts as the First Teaching Area for the Bachelor of Education (Secondary).

The English minor is not available to students undertaking the Creative Writing major.

Students will undertake the two components of the double degree concurrently.

You must demonstrate possession of key competencies outlined by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) as those attributes and motivations common to effective teachers.

To demonstrate this you must complete an online questionnaire to demonstrate your motivation for and understanding of, the course and profession. Details are available from the QTAC initial teacher education webpage .

If you've achieved a satisfactory result for one or more components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) at another institution, the satisfactory result can be carried across with your admission application. You are not eligible to apply for a place in this course if one or more components of LANTITE remains at unsatisfactory after two test attempts for that component.

Overseas qualifications

We will consider equivalent overseas qualifications for admissions purposes. If you have tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.

English language proficiency

We require students to demonstrate they can speak, write, read and comprehend academic English to a specified standard.

You must complete an online questionnaire to demonstrate your motivation for and understanding of, the course and profession. In the questionnaire you will be asked to:

• Rank a series of potentially appropriate statement responses, in order of what you think is most to least important.
• Provide two x 500 word written statements addressing the categories and indicators as outlined on the   Teacher Entry Fact Sheet .

QUT will send you details on how to complete the   Initial Teacher Education Course (ITE) Capabilities Criteria   questionnaire and submit your written statements after you have lodged an application.

If you've achieved a ' satisfactory'  result for one or more components of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) at another institution, the ' satisfactory' result can be carried across with your admission application. Course requirements

Literacy and numeracy.

You will need to successfully complete the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students to graduate from the course. You are permitted three test attempts in total for each component as a student at QUT. If you fail three test attempts for each component, you will not be able to graduate.  The test will assess your personal literacy and numeracy skills.

Admission Information for the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (MFA)

Admission requirements.

• A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
• Unofficial transcripts can be used for acceptance purposes with the submission of a Transcript Request Form .
• Creative Writing Sample – A creative writing sample of one creative writing work of at least 2,500 words or a culmination of creative writing samples totaling 2,500 words.*
• Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. For information on alternative assessments or TOEFL waivers, please call Admissions or view the official International Admissions policy .

*A sample of one or more poems totaling a minimum of 750 words may also be submitted. Song lyrics are not accepted at this time as writing samples.

Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

• Be in your final term and planning to start your master’s degree after the last day of class for your bachelor’s degree.
• Complete a Bachelor’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
• Submit an official/unofficial transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show a minimum of 105 completed credit hours.
• If you are a current Liberty University student completing your undergraduate degree, you will need to submit a Degree/Certificate Completion Application .
• Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new master’s degree.

Transcript Policies

Unofficial college transcript policy.

Unofficial transcripts combined with a Transcript Request Form can be used for admission. Official transcripts are required within 60 days of the admissions decision or before non-attendance drops for the first set of matriculated classes, whichever comes first, and will prevent enrollment into future terms until all official transcripts have been received.

Before sending unofficial college transcripts, please make sure they include the following:

• Your previous school’s name or logo printed on the document
• Cumulative GPA
• A list of completed courses and earned credit broken down by semester
• Degree and date conferred (if applicable)

Official College Transcript Policy

An acceptable official college transcript is one that has been issued directly from the institution and is in a sealed envelope. If you have one in your possession, it must meet the same requirements. If your previous institution offers electronic official transcript processing, they can send the document directly to [email protected] .
