Within one week of applying for summer housing, students are required to submit a housing reservation payment via the Bursar e-suite in the amount of $500, which applies toward full summer housing charges. If your reservation has not yet begun and a room of the requested type becomes available, the room change will be processed and you will receive email confirmation with the new room information.

The cancellation form is available on the reservation status page of the summer housing application. Cancellation fees are assessed based on the date your cancellation is received. After your cancellation is processed, we will issue a credit to your Bursar account of your summer housing payments less the cancellation charge you have been assessed. Housing overflows returned to NYU, despite additional residence hall

Byline photo of Naisha Roy

Every year, student registration for university housing outpaces available rooms, and every year some students who are unable to register are placed in off-campus hotels. This year, however, NYU also moved many students into its newly purchased Sixth Street residence hall, with some only receiving housing assignments a few days before the start of the semester. While all students seeking assignments have now received on-campus housing, many said the process revealed systemic flaws in NYU’s housing system.

NYU guarantees all undergraduates four years of university housing , so long as they don’t move off campus or miss registration deadlines. In order to apply for housing, students complete a two-phase process: one where they select roommates and pay a $1,000 deposit, and another where they receive a room selection time.

If students do not complete Phase 1 successfully — by missing either the deposit or registration deadline — they lose their right to guaranteed housing and cannot move on to Phase 2. Their only way to receive university housing is through a waitlist, which provides students with rooms as cancellations are processed throughout the summer.

In a statement to WSN, NYU spokesperson Joseph Tirella said that students on the housing waitlist were made aware of the possibility of temporary housing, and were encouraged to find off-campus housing. This year, 54 students were temporarily placed in the Walker Hotel in Greenwich Village. According to the university, all students at the hotel have since been assigned to on-campus housing.

“All students placed in the off-campus hotel were assigned from the housing waitlist and were informed of the possibility of receiving temporary housing,” Tirella said in the statement. “This semester there were 54 such students; all 54 have now been reassigned to on-campus housing.”

Sophomore Zane Mattingly, one of the students assigned to the hotel, told WSN that he was unable to pay the housing deposit by the deadline, leaving him on the waitlist. Mattingly said he originally requested low-cost housing, but the hotel, which was the only housing option made available to him at the time, cost more than he could afford.

Mattingly also said that while he was on the waitlist, NYU encouraged him to find off-campus housing. After struggling to secure accommodations with relatives, he feared he would not have a place to live for the semester.

The option Mattingly said NYU gave him while he was at the hotel, a single room in Lafayette Hall, was also over his budget at $12,900 per semester. He said he wasn’t able to secure a low-cost room until a spot opened up on the Bed for Bed forum, which allows students to trade room assignments. By the time he had found a low-cost room, which cost anywhere from $4,950 to $8,250 this year , he had moved three times.

“They pretty much told me, ‘We don’t have enough space to accommodate your request for low-cost housing, so you’re going to take what we give you,’ essentially,” Mattingly said.

Despite completing Phase 1, some students were still unable to receive an on-campus housing assignment. A number of students who had later housing selection times found themselves without any options left, with the amount of students seeking housing exceeding NYU’s capacity. These students were told to fill out a housing preference form, and that the university would assign them a room over the summer by email. Unlike students placed on the housing waitlist, these students were guaranteed on-campus housing.

According to email correspondence obtained by WSN, students who had not selected a room by April 27 were told demand for rooms exceeded capacity, and that they might not receive an assignment in Phase 2. The next day, they were told there were no remaining housing spots, and they would have to wait to be assigned to a room over the summer.

In 2018, then-senior vice president of student affairs Tom Ellett told WSN that if the number of vacant housing spots is greater than allowed by the budget, the university would have to charge more in the future to regain lost revenue. In 2018, the total number of beds that could be left vacant was 40. NYU did not respond to questions regarding how many vacant beds it had budgeted for this academic year, or about how many students had to be administratively assigned over the summer due to the overflow.

The university’s history of overbooking on-campus housing goes back decades. In 1985, NYU placed 350 first-years and transfer students at the Seville Hotel on Madison Avenue — a move The New York Times reported to have cost the university around $1 million. At the time, NYU said this was an emergency measure due to a surge in housing requests from out-of-state students and upperclassmen.

In more recent years, the university has housed overflow students through the New York City-based Affinia Hotels chain, including about 60 students in 2010 , 200 students in 2014 and 145 students in 2015 .

One junior, who asked to remain anonymous due to privacy concerns, told WSN that they were grateful to have secured housing after they did not initially receive a room during selection, and said they waited months for NYU to inform them of their housing assignment.

“I needed housing because me and my roommate, we’re both low-income students and we cannot afford rent in New York City at all,” the student said in an interview. “So it was very scary because we were like ‘OK, let’s look for how much we have to rent and how much we have to work,’ and we already work and have very busy schedules. So it was just not possible.”

This year, the university sent students multiple emails reminding them of the housing cancellation deadline, which it periodically extended from June 15 to Aug. 28.

“It really seemed like they wanted us to cancel our housing reservation,” said Rico-ian Banting, a junior who did not receive a housing assignment until Aug. 21, and received two emails less than a week later reminding him he could still cancel his housing.

New York University’s Sixth Street residence hall, a tall glass building, seen from a busy street.

Many students like Banting, who were unable to select a room during their registration period, were assigned to live in the Sixth Street dorm, a building near Cooper Square that NYU purchased this summer.

Multiple students told WSN that when they registered for housing, the Sixth Street dorm was not available for selection. Some students who were placed in the new residence hall said they only learned the dorm existed when they were assigned to live there.

“The Sixth Street residence hall was ultimately secured after the completion of the room selection process,” Tirella, the NYU spokesperson, wrote to WSN. “That inventory was obtained to provide the university some flexibility in the room assignment process, allowing us to extend more offers of housing to students on the waitlist.”

Tirella also said NYU has used off-campus hotels to accommodate waitlisted students “for almost a decade,” and that most years, around 50 students are housed this way. This year’s figure of 54 students was similar to years prior, despite the university’s purchase of the Sixth Street residence hall to mitigate the overflow.

Students also said they were frustrated with communication from the Office of Residential Life and Housing Services over the summer. According to emails obtained by WSN, NYU repeatedly pushed back the date that students would be told their room assignments, from the end of July to the end of August. Multiple students said they did not know what their housing situation would look like until almost a week before the start of the semester.

One student, who asked to remain anonymous due to privacy concerns, told WSN that they were initially unable to secure housing after being assigned a late selection time, and that they eventually decided to withdraw from on-campus housing because they were frustrated with the process.

“For them to not communicate whether or not I was going to get housing or when I was going to get housing was super stressful on my end,” the student said.

NYU has gotten too big wheich results in more problems of which the administration is not capable of handling. NYU has enormous endowment and this money should be used to help low income students to pay for their living expenses.

1. Do I have to be an NYU Law student to apply for housing?

One does not have to be enrolled in an academic program to apply for NYU Law summer housing.

2. Is the required $1,000.00 refundable?

The $1,000.00 deposit, required for all applicants who are not NYU students, is put toward the cost of housing and is not returned at the end of the summer term. If you do not receive an assignment offer, or you decline an offered assignment by the deadline outlined in your assignment letter, the deposit will be returned to you in full.

3. What happens if I apply but do not submit a deposit?

If you do not submit an application along with a deposit, your application will not be processed and will eventually be canceled. We'll send you email reminders that your deposit was not submitted, and you can deposit after applying. Please note : only applicants who have submitted an application and a deposit will be eligible for assignment.

4. What's the timeline for the application/assignment/move-in process?

Once the application opens, applicants will have several weeks to apply and submit their deposit. We typically begin offering assignments mid-March, and applicants will be prompted to review and confirm any offered assignment or be canceled automatically. Assignment start dates are dependent on the requested date applicants indicate on their application.

5. I would like to move in earlier/stay later than the dates advertised. How can I do this?

Due to academic year housing needs, we are unable to accommodate requests to move in earlier or stay later than the posted summer housing dates.

6. What are the differences between NYU Law summer housing and NYU Summer Housing?

The NYU Summer Housing program is overseen by the main campus' Office of Residential Life and Housing Services . A primary difference between programs is that Law is geared more toward independent living, with every resident receiving a private bedroom, even those living within shared apartments. Additionally, all of our apartments include a 4-burner stovetop oven, a refrigerator, dining area, and bathroom within each unit.

7. Should I apply to NYU Law housing as well as the main NYU campus summer housing program?

You are able to apply for NYU Law housing and NYU Summer Housing , but please note that our programs have separate and distinct processes. Applying for one does not affect your application for the other, and you are not required to apply to both programs, but you should use the same NYU credentials (e.g. NetID, NYU ID) if you do.

8. I would like to live with my sibling/friend. How can I do this?

While we cannot guarantee availability, we are happy to accommodate apartment-mate requests whenever possible. When applying for housing, please search for and match with your desired apartment-mate(s) in the NYU Law housing portal . If you and your desired apartment-mate have different gender identities, you'll need to indicate an interest in gender neutral housing on your application.  Please note : Matching with another applicant does not guarantee you will be assigned with them; it just notifies our staff that you have someone in mind.

9. If I apply with a friend and they decide not to move in, what will happen to my housing assignment?

Each applicant's assignment, though possibly "linked" to another's by way of apartment-mate matching, is completely separate and unaffected by others' assignments. If your friend were to cancel, your assignment would still be intact, and either you could reach out to our office to request a new apartment-mate, or another applicant will be assigned by staff.

10. I want to apply for less than 10 weeks. Will this affect my chances of receiving housing?

We prioritize summer housing based on the number of weeks requested, with preference given to the full 10-week term, and the date on which the application was received. Applying for less than 10 weeks does not disqualify your application, but your application will only be processed if and when 10-week applications have been exhausted.

11. Do I have to be married to qualify for family housing?

You are not required to be married in order to have a partner live with you. You may instead submit a notarized affidavit of domestic partnership , which is common for non-married folks. No documents will be accepted until you confirm an offered housing assignment. For more information, please see our Family and Partner Housing page .

12. Will I be able to host guests?

Under normal conditions, yes, summer residents are welcome to host guests in accordance with the housing license. Residents may host up to 3 guests at a time for up to 7 consecutive days, but may not host guests for more than 7 days within any 30-day period. Please refer to the housing license found in the application for more information on our guest policy.

13. Will I have access to a gym?

Under normal conditions, yes, the summer housing program includes access to athletic facilities  for the applicant . Additional occupants, such as a spouse or children, are not granted access to athletic facilities but may purchase memberships individually. For more information, please connect with NYU Athletics .

14. Are pets allowed?

Our pet policy is such that no animals are permitted in residence with the exception of emotional support animals or service animals which have to be approved by the Moses Center for Student Accessibility . Please note that despite the name, one does not need to be a student to petition for approval; non-student summer residents may also submit documentation.

15. Do you offer accommodations for individuals with disabilities, for example, someone that uses a wheelchair?

We have a number of apartments that are accessible for residents with disabilities, including those who use a wheelchair. The Moses Center for Student Accessibility is the resource for submitting documentation for receiving University-approved accommodations. Please note that despite the name, non-student residents are able to submit documentation, too.

16. Between D'Agostino Hall and Hayden Hall, which is preferred?

Both of our residence halls offer multiple room types and include nearly identical amenities. Water, electricity, heat, and internet is included in both halls. D'Agostino Hall and Hayden Hall are very close to Washington Square Park, multiple subway stations (A B C D E F M N R 6), and are right in the middle of the Greenwich Village area, so it comes down to individual preference.

NYU waitlist 2024 (class 2028)

Starting a thread for nyu waitlisted. Can we update this thread when decisions come out, or any “tells” on the portal? I have heard in past years, checklists would disappear or the housing would update before waitlist acceptance. Also I heard that the first wave of waitlist admissions starts in very early May….and that it is usually need-aware. Any insight?

I have experienced many waitlists. It is safe to assume that getting off waitlist is very difficult if not impossible on most occasions. FA is a major factor in getting off waitlist. All students that I know who got off the waitlists did not need FA. I hope the best for you but it is also very important to have realistic expectations.

At nyu specifically?

I was Waitlisted for Stern during the EDII round. I don’t have many acceptances. So getting off this waitlist would be a blessing. I know it’s tough but it’s not impossible…

I saw last 2 years…there were a decent amount of nyu waitlist acceptances. I assume this is because NYU is expensive…so not everyone accepted can go, or decline for an equally good program elsewhere.

Though they also said the waitlist is usually not need blind, so very little assistance offered…are you hoping for FA?

I did apply for aid but was not expecting any FA to begin with so I would assume that I would be considered full pay.

Hey Guys, i just got waitlisted for Nutrition and dietetics at steinhardt. No FA so realistically what are my chances of getting in ?

This is totally conjecture, but in past year threads the below seem to be determining factors:

  • were you ED1/ED2/RD? Some say that ED has slightly higher likelihood, though I saw a lot of RD candidates on here get off as well. So not sure how big of on an impact this actually has.
  • Ivy Coach said ~320 got off in past years, again this is conjecture as NYU neither posts the size of their waitlist nor the yield from it.
  • Past threads mention not needing FA as a factor.

NYU doesn’t really post any waitlist info and it changes by year.

does anyone know if the updates stuff in the waitlist form should be point form or paragraph? i figured probably point form but i don’t want to seem too informal lol

I did an informal one for the form because I didn’t want to write something only to trim it down for word count. But I may send a formal one soon that dives more into details.

Last year ppl said they updated in the form…, but informal is fine. Those that got off even said they didn’t write anything in form. It seems that admissions might have already reviewed our apps…and they really dont care about the form at this point.

Nyu accepted 10k…of 100k+ in applicants…and if they accepted 12k…we would have made it. So everyone has already been deemed worthy. It is just a numbers game now.

wait so there were only 2000 waitlisted? did they release their waitlist numbers? i checked their common data set from last year and i didnt see anything on there

No idea! Last time they published in 2017 it was 2,900.

I read an article last year that < 15% of applicants were waitlisted. This is more than ten thousand students. Here is the excerpt:

According to Williams, NYU’s waitlist comprises less than 15% of its applicant pool, and it is not ranked. Waitlisted applicants should not send any additional information beyond what is requested on the waitlist response form.

I don’t know how many will get off the WL. As far as I know, admission to NYU is handled by each school, some schools may have higher WL movements than others.

If you need FA, chances are low to get off the WL regardless of your credentials. This applies to practically every private college in America.

Not fair, in my opinion, in many regards.

oof…that’s not great news…

They basically WL as many as they accepted!

Guys, any of you can register for the summer housing program?. When I clicked on it, it showed the whole form and process on the screen and I could even register and received an email about confirmation.

yes. everyone can.

got my hopes up for ntg. Which school have you applied for?
