My First Guest Speaker Speech | Virtual Graduation

“Thankfully, my Mama and Papa, part of my support system, taught me that BEFORE I SEEK TO BE THE BEST OF THE BESTS, OR THE GREATEST IN THE WORLD, BEING MY BEST SELF IS ALREADY ENOUGH and that’s the most important.”

1

This might not look like nothing sort of a big deal to others, but I’ll forever treasure this as one of my many firsts and life milestone!! It’s truly an honor to be invited by my alma mater to be their guest speaker, even if I’m not yet there.

Here’s my speech:

Good day to everyone. Mabuhay!

First and foremost, I would like to congratulate every one of you today. Congratulations to our dear school principal, teachers, and staff who all made this event possible. Congratulations parents and guardians who fully supported and provided the needs of our graduates today. Of course, Congratulations to our dear 2021 graduates who, despite the pandemic, are now starting to harvest the fruit of their labors.

I’m Mariel Jade Monteagudo, a JPMS graduate, batch 2008.

When Ma’am Lorena Java, my grade 6 advisor, invited me to be the guest speaker for today’s Virtual Graduation, I hesitated at first and I told her that I’m not yet qualified because I’m still on my way to becoming successful and I’m still far from where I really want to be.

But she believed in me, reminded me of my worth, and trusted me for this role. That’s why I am here in front of you today, thank you Ma’am Java.

That’s the first thing that I want to highlight. A strong support system is very important in life and in success. Your parents, family, loved-ones, friends, classmates, and even your social media followers or subscribers, play an important role in your life. They can make or break you.

13 years ago, I was also in your shoes, listening to the guest speaker during my elementary graduation ceremony, although not virtual, but still the same, I hoped, Sana ako rin ganyan in the future while also wishing that her speech wouldn’t be long and boring.

I didn’t graduate as a batch Valedictorian, I only received the First Honorable Mention award, but seeing my parents very proud of me and of what I got during that very moment, everything felt right and perfect. Thankfully, my Mama and Papa, part of my support system, taught me that before I seek to be the best of the bests or the greatest in the world, being my best self is already enough and that’s the most important.

2

Our dear graduates, you don’t need to compete with anyone else, but yourself. Just start from trying to be better than who you were and what you did yesterday. In today’s world, where everyone wants to be famous, be that individual who aims for value and purpose.

Being kind hearted, generous, and faithful to God will surely take you to places. In a nutshell, Matthew 6:33 “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”

If you haven’t asked yourself yet, “Ano bang pangarap ko sa buhay?” o “Ano ba talaga ang gusto kong gawin?”. I’d like you to answer that without considering what others might think about you.

Most of the time, we really know our dreams and ambitions deep within our hearts, but we’re afraid to admit it. And it’s not because we’re afraid to fail, but we’re afraid of what others would say if we fail. I believe everyone has something within us that could be our gift to the world.

“Bata pa’ko,hindi ko pa kaya ‘yan.”  You know, the only obstacle that’s keeping you from your dreams is the limitation that you set to yourself.

Once you choose to believe that you can, regardless of the situation and challenges, you become unstoppable. Instead of telling yourself that one day you’ll be like that or you’ll get that, choose now as your day one to make something for those goals.

With the theme, Strengthening the Quality of Education Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic, I’d like to tell our dear graduates that you can always take action and be part of the solution. Maximize the use of social media to your advantage . Learning doesn’t stop here at your virtual graduation.

As the world and our way of life continue to change, the sure way we can adapt is our commitment to learning.

This pandemic should serve as our reminder that it’s not about what happens to us, but it’s about what we do and how we react to what happens to us.

Let me share with you a quote from one of my favorite motivational speakers, Mr. Tony Robbins, “It’s not what we get. But who we become, what we contribute…that gives meaning to our lives.”

Batch 2021, there’s no such thing as “too early” or “too young” in knowing your why in life. May you never stop searching for your purpose.

Again, congratulations to our graduates as you reach this milestone of your academic journey.  Thank your parents, teachers and friends for giving their time, effort and sacrifices.

Thank you Mama, Papa, my family,  and my former teachers for everything. Part of who I am now is because of you.

Tuparin Ang Pangarap: A Graduation Speech

Thank you for visiting my blog. I’ve received several emails thanking me of how this post has helped them in preparing their speech. Like them, I hope you’ll also find my speech useful. I’m not asking anything in return but I would really appreciate it if you can subscribe to our Youtube Channel Iway Diaries.

Last April 5, 2018, I delivered my first ever inspirational speech for the first batch of Senior High School graduates of my Alma Mater – Parang National High School. I graduated from this school 15 years ago and honestly, this year’s event and visit made me somewhat emotional. When they sang the school’s songs I sang years ago, I couldn’t help myself but be teary-eyed for a moment. I suddenly remembered my graduation day, all those mixed emotions of excitement and fear. To the graduates, congratulations! I’m not a very good writer nor an experienced speaker, but I hope I am able to inspire you with my speech below.

Today, I am not only congratulating you, the graduates who successfully completed the additional years of learning in high school, but I am also congratulating your proud parents and relatives who have been waiting for this very special academic achievement. It’s normal to feel anxious and maybe scared after today’s celebration but take it easy. You are all going to be fine! How do I know that? The K to 12 curriculum has a purpose and that’s to make you all more ready and more equipped to join the workforce or enter college. Now let me ask you graduates, are you really ready to go out there and face life’s challenges?

Fifteen years ago, I was just like you. I was happy, excited but I also felt fear, fear of the unknown future, fear of new routine, fear of being in a new school, new place, and with new friends. But aside from fear, there was also stress. My father was against the idea of me going to MSU-IIT. The school offered me BS Statistics, a course that’s new to me and my parents so obviously my father didn’t like it. I remember he wanted me to go to UP in Iloilo, take up BS Accountancy which was the course that I originally wanted, or go to NDU Cotabato City instead as it was nearer. Choosing a school for college is sometimes stressful. Money is the number 1 consideration, no. 2 is parent’s approval. But when my mother asked me if I was sure of MSU-IIT, there was uncertainty inside me, but I saw that question as a window of opportunity, so I confidently said YES I am sure! Who wouldn’t want to go to a public school anyway? It’s cheaper and living away from my strict father was a plus!

So there I was a university student of my chosen school, thanks to my mother, taking up BS Statistics but planning to shift to BS Accountancy for the next semester or school year. That was my original plan. But you see, life is full of twists and turns . This was my realization no.1 during my first few years in college. What you don’t like right now might be interesting for you next year. From wanting to be CPA, I started loving my course and got obsessed with the idea of graduating with honors and be a company statistician or a statistics professor someday.

Fast forward, after many sleepless nights, I did graduate as Cumlaude, a battlefield I have won, yet I had one regret which led me to realization no. 2 – E njoy, make friends and learn new good things from them . I focused too much on my studies before that well, you can picture me as the KJ and the most serious one in the group. I’m not saying it’s bad but seriously it’s not good either. Remember that college is not just about passing subjects after subjects. Treat it as the place where you can discover new skills or talents, and a place where you can improve your people skills. Believe me, you’ll need good people skills when you want to succeed at work someday.

Months after graduation in college, I didn’t get the job that I wanted that time. Why? Because again, life is full of twists and turns. It turned out that pursuing a career is expensive. I traveled to places just for an interview, yet I failed. I applied to several schools, I even tried applying in a bank one time because I was told statisticians have a place in banks, but then again, I wasn’t chosen. And then came realization no. 3, Job hunting is not about grades or the number of awards received. Yes, it’s a plus, but not an assurance . My parents were already out of budget, I had 2 siblings in college that time so if you do the math, obviously the combined salaries of a teacher and a fireman won’t make ends meet. So I went home, unemployed. And there I was, an elementary and high school valedictorian, a Cum Laude graduate, waiting for days to pass by, most of the time just inside my room. But here’s my realization no. 4, and it’s very common in movies because it really happens in real life, that when you’re at your lowest, when you already lack resources, no money, don’t lose hope because there are windows of opportunities reserved for each of you . All you have to do is be open-minded and be brave to make a decision fast.

For my path to landing a job, my window of opportunity was a text from a childhood friend in Cebu informing me about a vacancy of the place where she stayed. I knew we had no more money for another travel, my father was already complaining but I convinced him to give me 1 shot. Thankfully, he agreed but my parents only gave me money to pay for a month of rent. So when I arrived in Cebu, I did not waste any time. I widened my options, I applied to all positions I’m willing to take, all positions containing the terms “Analyst”, “Specialist” and so on. And just 2 days after I arrived in Cebu, I got a job. A job that I had no idea really yet I accepted it because it was the first opened door for me and I was afraid I won’t get another one in a month. I was hired as a Search Engine Specialist, that time I had no knowledge that Google, Bing and Yahoo are called Search Engines. My manager told me he chose me because he wanted someone who’s good in numbers and who can help him with his research. So I excitedly signed my first ever contract with a plan of staying for few months only because, again, I wanted to be a Statistician.

But life is not a one-path journey , this was my realization no. 5. I realized, well I am already good in numbers and analysis, why not use it in other fields instead? So I worked hard, studying terms in the IT industry, Google and Youtube became my bestfriends for me to learn new skills. I stayed in the same company for 8 years, I enjoyed several promotions, managing different teams, I also had time for love life that’s why I married my officemate, we had our first child, everything started to fall into place. But nothing in life is permanent, most especially jobs and this was my realization no.6. Our company decided to close their PH office and I was pregnant with my 2nd child. And there I was, a soon to be a mother of two, unemployed but not hopeless. Why? Because I knew, there will be another window of opportunity for me, at the right time.

Now, I am a full-time work-at-home mom, working for a digital marketing agency, helping online businesses in achieving their goals. My office is in our house so yeah instead of corporate clothes, I’m working in my pajamas. My boss might not be around but I can hear my other bosses shouting every now and then, calling for mommy. Was this my dream job when I was your age? Of course not. But when I became a mother, all I wanted was to earn more money, discover new opportunities while being close to my children. Digital marketing has opened me doors to many opportunities so yes, what I have right now is my dream job which led me to realization no. 7 – there’s no such thing as luck, only answered prayers with some twists from the most powerful above all.

How I chose my path, I am not alone. I know some registered nurses who chose to join the PNP, a nurse graduate who’s now a writer, a law school graduate who chose to open and focus on his business. You see graduates, success is not an end goal. It’s a never-ending process towards happiness and fulfillment and it’s changing because goals change as you grow older. Right now, all of you are successful senior high school graduates, most of you will go to college so aim for that diploma as your next goal. Focus on your studies, get a part-time job if financial resources are not enough. It’s a must to have fun with friends but it’s never OK to attend class with a hangover. It’s OK to have a love life, but for girls, remember your father’s face whenever you’re alone with your boyfriend, for boys, remember your mother’s face. It’s OK to fail once, twice but please make sure you won’t stay 7 years in college!!! Always think about your parents! Try your best not to fail them!

For those of you who will be joining the workforce early, just trust in yourself and widen your options. Don’t ever think you deserve little just because you don’t have a college degree. I know high school graduates who are now managing teams in companies, I know many who are very good in what they do and are now earning huge, some started early to put up their own small businesses, your options are actually endless. So I will not ask you again whether you’re indeed ready to go out there because I know you all are! So just as long as you open your eyes to see windows of opportunities, be quick and firm with your decisions, always think about your parents and family who supported you, be friendly out there, believe in yourself and most importantly, pray to your Allah or God, you’ll all be alright. Thank you and congratulations!

As promised, here is our sample graduation speech based on the 2018  DepEd -released theme, Mag-aaral ng K to 12: Handa sa Hamon ng Buhay (K to 12 Learners: Ready to Face Life’s Challenges) .

It’s written for a senior high school graduate, but you can also use it as a reference or guide upon drafting one for Grade 6 (graduation) and Grade 10 (moving up or completion) ceremonies.

Skepticism, Ignorance, and Miscommunication

A sample graduation speech based on the 2018 theme, Mag-aaral ng K to 12: Handa sa Hamon ng Buhay (K to 12 Learners: Ready to Face Life’s Challenges)

Nobody knows much the struggles we have been through in the last two years more than we do. Neither do our parents who have silently tracked our sleepovers with study buddies for our group research and projects through our Facebook statuses nor our teachers who until now still seem if not a little guilty about the overwhelming curricular requirements. Totally, we have experienced the upsurge of the demands and expectations of education in the 21 st century.

Distinguished guests of honor, our school principal and assistant principal, teachers, parents and sponsors, ladies and gentlemen, and the 2018 graduating class, good morning.

We have just survived senior high school. It must be a celebration not just among us, but also among our parents and the stakeholders of this institution. While this year’s graduation theme, Mag-aaral ng K to 12: Handa sa Hamon ng Buhay (K to 12 Learners: Ready to Face Life’s Challenges), highlights the role of K to 12 Basic Education Program in harnessing the skills and competencies of the Filipino learners to face life’s challenges, I choose to discuss the blind spots on these challenges that confront the Filipino people in general, and thus focus on the issues of – skepticism, ignorance, and miscommunication. In our brave admission of these, we become more cognizant of our self-worth and part in the rebuilding of a great nation.

Admit it, we were at first a little skeptical about the significant change in the Philippine education system that shortly drew negative public feedback, mostly on the issues of unpreparedness of the implementing agencies and of additional financial burden on the part of the sponsoring parents. A Filipino instinct maybe, we suddenly become dubiously vocal with issues even without our full grasp. As soon as they cool down however, we finally forget and find ourselves surrendering reservations and resistance.

There is no big problem with skepticism, I must say. In fact, it encourages us to confirm facts, and hence, make sound judgments and decisions. As a confirmation bias however, with skepticism, most of us appear to be smart without doing any work. Sadly, this defines many of us. I stand here today not as a charlatan who falsely claims having special knowledge or skill, but rather as a representative of these young Filipino learners who have just refused to give up a good fight for true education.

Ignorance finds no place in our generation. In a world where everybody has access to a vast resource of information, there is no excuse for us, students, for instance, not to do a little effort to compensate for the shortcomings of our academics. In a sense, technological disruption in education has served more pathways for student-teacher collaborations while we develop more accountability for our own learning.

As technology sweeps through classrooms and shapes the future of education, there shouldn’t be a collapse of the long been established foundation of Filipino studentry. However, as Manuel Quezon observed, “Education is collapsing under the weight of poor planning, limited infrastructure, diminished education, and graft and corruption. Our students are no longer taught to be thinkers, or artists, or poets, or entrepreneurs, or anything, rather as laborers, not even of our society, but of other countries.”

It is no longer just an issue concerning selective academic ignorance, but of a blind eye turned towards other serious problems not just in our educational system, but in many critical aspects of the Filipino way of life. Worse, our sense of co-ownership and Filipinohood has since been diminishing with our creation of an imaginary superhero we empowered to do the solving of these many issues for us. I don’t think there is what we can still call ‘us.’

While skepticism and ignorance can be directly addressed in the personal level, miscommunication caused by our inadequate skills that are irresponsive to the demands of emerging communication technologies can be the greatest challenge. As Bernard Shaw describes it, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”

Our communication skills seem creeping far behind the facility and convenience of innovative channels. As we go online, sometimes we think we have the right frequency and quantity of communication, but soon we find out that we fail to build mutual understanding. Without facial expressions, gestures, other nonverbal cues, and other means to retract immediately, there’s a big risk of misunderstanding. Equally important, psychologists warn against lack of physical contact as it has adverse effects on our emotional and social well-being.

True enough, we are confronted with these issues – skepticism, ignorance, and miscommunication –but with courage within us and nobility of a shared purpose, together we can rework the future of this nation that our forefathers once envisioned. It should start within ourselves.

To the 2018 graduating class, Eckhart Tolle once said and I requote, “The power is in you. The answer is in you. And you are the answer to all your searches: you are the goal. You are the answer. It’s never outside.” Congratulations, and Mabuhay!

(a) Call me a graduate in a nonsensical fashion, and I will strip off this ceremonial robe, and simply walk out, for the idea of graduation devoid of sense classically implies a good riddance of the daunting EOP recitation in our English class, a surcease of the hundred-page ink-draining notes in Filipino, and a denouement of a treasure-hunt drama in Math (to find the value of x, just because our teacher could not move on from his own past) … 2017 Graduation Speech: Sabay-Sabay na Hakbang Tungo sa Maunland na Kinabukasan (Click link to read full graduation speech manuscript.)

9 Memorable Pinoy Graduation Speeches

sample guest speaker speech for high school graduation tagalog

We have heard inspiring commencement speeches from the world over, but no one can pierce the Pinoy heart deeper than fellow Filipinos with their well-chosen words of wisdom. In honor of the toga-tossing season, here are some of the wittiest, fiercest and most heartfelt local graduation speeches that we should all listen to– whether you’re fresh out of school, or a professional meant to write your own such speech someday.

1. Manny V. Pangilinan

Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, 2015 The PLDT, Meralco and TV5 Chairman shares the secret recipe for success: that there is none.

sample guest speaker speech for high school graduation tagalog

“What accounts for success? There is no magic, no mystery, no secret recipe.  Success springs from values as basic and old-fashioned as being honest and truthful, working hard, playing fair, setting goals, discipline, and determination to pursue them. Most of all, success is about passion. Passion to succeed. Passion to compete. Passion for excellence. Commitment to succeed can overcome poverty.

A spirit of purpose can give impetus to human energy, ambition can set heroic goals and achieve them. But let me add this – you can’t succeed if you’re afraid to fail. I’ve known how to lose – not just once, but many times.  Boldness to take risks, guts to decide and act – these are strengths.  Paano ka makaka-score, if you don’t shoot that ball?

Remember that you can afford to fail because you’re young. Successes tell you that you can attain more successes in the future. But failures tell you that you can survive and move on.  Sabi nga ni JK Rowling: “It’s impossible to live without failing at something, unless you’ve lived so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all.” Read the full speech here .

2. Lisa Macuja-Elizalde

Ateneo de Manila University, 2015 The world-renowned Filipina ballerina gives eight lessons inspired by the “eight counts” used in ballet.

  • Decide and commit to something that you are passionate about.
  • No pain, no gain… Nothing can take the place of hard work – not even talent.
  • Whatever your goal, get good at it!
  • Honor your emotions and acknowledge your fears.
  • Treat every time you get to practice your profession as a performance. Don’t save your best effort for another day… Always give 100% so you never have to regret anything. But BE PREPARED.
  • Do something crazy. Do something that defies all logic at least once in your life. You never know what could happen from there.
  • One of the hardest decisions you’ll ever face in life is choosing whether to walk away or try harder.
  • Serve. Offer yourself to a cause bigger than your own needs or ambition.

3. Winnie Monsod

last lecture to her UP Economics class, 2010 “Please don’t cheat” whether in school or in life, warns the fierce economist, because you will only be contributing to the problem, instead of being part of the solution..

“Can you assure me that, as a leader, you are going to, right now, until you finish your courses, are you going to act with honor and integrity? Because I’m going to tell you class, you think cheating is something that is very unusual? It’s very usual in the University [of the Philippines] and this is what bothers me so much.

Because you do not have to cheat. And cheating in the small things is going to lead to cheating in the large things. And all these people that you have contempt for, because they are corrupt, because they are cheating, are people who may have in fact, been part of the university. As a matter of fact, if you think about it – I keep on telling this because we are always so proud, UP  tayo, ha ! I think 6 of the, the majority of presidents of the Philippines came from UP.

The majority of the Supreme Court Chief Justices come from UP. The majority of the Speakers of the House come from UP. The majority of the Senate Presidents come from UP. Eh, saan tayo ngayon? [Where are we now?] “If they were so good, why are we where we are now? And so you have to ask yourselves that. And part of the reason is that we have always looked at excellence, and not at honor and integrity.”

4. Jose Dalisay, Jr.

University of the Philippines Baguio, 2005 The award-winning writer and former chairman of UP Diliman’s English Department, who took 14 years to finish college, leaves the students with five life lessons.

“Let me end with five brief exhortations, of the kind we’ve been hearing since elementary school: First, read a good book. Not another novel, if you’re already a writer, nor another paper on the molecular theory of turbulence if you’re already a physicist. Perhaps we should exchange books, for the purpose of – using one famous definition of education- turning an empty mind into an open one. Second, learn how to play the guitar. By this I mean find some form of artistic expression, or some source of artistic pleasure.

The solace of art is often the truest and the most enduring. Third, learn how to swim. Be independent, and learn how to fend for yourself. But also learn how to swim so you can save others from drowning. Lord knows this country needs all the lifeguards it can find. Fourth – and they didn’t say this in grade school – have fun.

Too many academic papers deal with the sources of our sorrows – as if we didn’t know them already. Give us something to feel good about, and find us the way to happiness, now and forever. It doesn’t sound like a scholar’s task, but if happiness isn’t worth our minds and labors, what is? Lastly, get a life – and get a good one.”  Read the full speech here .

5. Lourd de Veyra  – University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication, 2012 The multi-awarded writer and “Word of the Lourd” host delivers a humorous and unconventional graduation speech.

“Unannounced changes in life’s itinerary are like dancing lessons from God.”  Napakagandang ideya. Napaka-akmang metapora.  Dancing lesson. I refuse to believe in a God who does not know how to dance.”

6. Archbishop Antonio Luis Cardinal Tagle

Ateneo de Manila University, 2013 The archbishop offers a God-centered advice for all of us to heed.

“If we look at the three keywords — to praise God, to reverence God, to serve God — the purpose of the human person is to get out of our confinement, to get out of our shells, to get out of ourselves, and to reach out to God in praise, in reverence, and in service. And it is only by losing ourselves that we find our true selves.” “If your purpose is clear, and it is not directed to self-promotion and self-propagation then you can really be an asset to society and to the world.”

7. Ryan Cayabyab

University of the Philippines, 2005 The Maestro does not only compose beautiful music and lyrics, but is also capable of crafting a memorable speech with witty school and life analogies.

  • Sa UP, lahat tayo magaling.

summa cum laude, Ateneo de Manila, 2001 The visually-impaired BS Mathematics graduate shows us “the light in the darkness by the light of the stars” in this inspirational speech.

“We thank our mentors for being good teachers from whom we learn a lot. But I am certain that each of us has encountered teachers who helped us best by becoming students themselves: open to learning new things, developing better methods, nurturing our true potentials.” “Even if fears persist to hinder us from achieving something, what really matters is the shift from “I can’t do it,” to “I can try”.

I went beyond my impairment by doing not only what sighted people can do, but also what they sometimes are too frightened to try.” “Everyone experiences disabilities one way or another; mine is just more obvious than yours. We are all fortunate to have loved ones, who help us bear the burdens brought about by our weaknesses.

We may find ourselves in the dark, but we should not be afraid to move forward, because we have the light of our stars to count on, and to be thankful for.”  Read the full speech here .

9. Anna Kristina Arce

magna cum laude, De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, 2009 The Applied Deaf Studies graduate, who majored in Multimedia Arts, speaks to our hearts with a message worth more than words could ever explain.

https://youtu.be/dh_Qjbe4r1Y

“We may be Deaf persons but we can also do anything you can do, except hear. Communicating with our hands should not make a difference. We live in one country, one world. That means we also long for respect, inclusion in accessibility, and acceptance with dignity.

We are not a different breed because of our disability. We also want to live in a society where people will not stare or frown at us or treat us differently. We are also human beings and we are similar regardless of our disability. Please allow us to show you what we can do, please believe in us too. Let us prove to you that, yes, the Deaf can!”

Graduation speech inspired by Lloyd Luna

This graduation speech, inspired by Motivational Speaker Lloyd Luna was delivered by Kevin Yambao

Honorable Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, Honorable Congresswoman Lani Cayetano, Honorable Mayor Freddie Tiñga, our superintendent Dr. Norma Ablan Adamos, our principal Mr. George P. Tizon, department coordinators, 4th year advisers, teachers, parents, distinguished guests, co-graduates, ladies and gentlemen, a pleasant evening to all of you.

Kevin Yambao Graduation Speech was inspired by Lloyd Luna

I am greatly honored and flattered to have been asked to speak for this very, very wonderful occasion. I promise, as King Henry the VIII allegedly promised each of his wives, “Don’t worry, I won’t keep you long.” This speech will last for 5 minutes and 2 hours.

I’m sure everyone knows what a corn seed is. When you plant a corn seed on a healthy soil, you don’t get a corn seed but a corn, right? It’s because the harvest is always greater than what is planted as long as we nurtured them properly. This applies to what we are right now.

And so, my fellow graduates, we are gathered here tonight to reap more than all the combined product of the thirst, hunger, exhaustion, & sleepless nights we encountered en route to this exciting moment.

As we happily walk our way up to this stage, but please do not take it literally, we sometimes falter and fumble. We have already heard inspiring stories of successful people, and as I have noticed, failure is the common ingredient that seemed to add flavor to the final dish of what they have cooked.

When I was a child, I loved music so much and I dreamed of becoming a professional musician. I even thought of enrolling in some of the prestigious conservatory school of music in the Philippines, but my family couldn’t afford it.

I didn’t turn out to be a full-fledged musician.

During my elementary days, I always dreamed of being the best. I strived hard and managed to be consistently on top of the class. Because of the social issues that occurred between me and my teachers, I was not able to make it to the top when I was on my 6th grade.

I didn’t become the valedictorian.

These failures made me stronger. True, what I’ve just shared to you are my sad experiences. But these experiences didn’t bring me down because I didn’t want them drag me down. I know there are still a lot of things like this out there waiting for me, but always remember what Robert H. Schuller reminded us, “Tough times never last, but tough people do.” Also, remember that “Day always follows the night as there’s rain after summer.” I managed to survive the rainy season and am now starting to work on summer. Are you experiencing the night of your life right now? Don’t worry; you will have your day after the night. The sun will rise and it’s rising very soon.

Today, as you leave with a diploma on hand, remember the encounters, the good times as well as the bad times you’ve experienced at Senator Renato “Compañero” Cayetano Memorial Science & Technology High School that made us a better person. Bear in mind the promises you made to yourself and others. Keep in contact with those who have touched your lives. Come back and visit our Alma Mater!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the God Almighty, my guardian angels, Lola, Ate Neneth, my family for their encouragement, unconditional love and support, my teachers who discussed not only what is in store in their lesson plan but also the lessons of life, my fellow schoolmates who took part in molding my personality and were always considerate during difficult times. Let us also take time today to thank the people behind the success of this momentous event.

The Cayetanos namely His Honorable Senator Alan Peter Cayetano and his wife Honorable Congresswoman Lani Cayetano, Honorable Senator Pia Cayetano and most especially the late Honorable Senator Rene “Compañero” Cayetano, last but not the least the energetic and exciting, disciplinarian but compassionate, our principal George Tizon. The sacrifices of these people lead us to this fruitful accomplishment. Let us give them a big hand. (clap)

Thank you! I am going to miss the days we have spent together. Keep our dreams alive! And finally, please let me end this speech with a quote from the ever famous Winston Churchill, “Success is never final. Failure is never fatal. It is courage that counts.”

God bless you all.
