How to Write a Research Proposal | Examples & Templates

Published on October 12, 2022 by Shona McCombes and Tegan George. Revised on November 21, 2023.

Structure of a research proposal

A research proposal describes what you will investigate, why it’s important, and how you will conduct your research.

The format of a research proposal varies between fields, but most proposals will contain at least these elements:

Introduction

Literature review.

  • Research design

Reference list

While the sections may vary, the overall objective is always the same. A research proposal serves as a blueprint and guide for your research plan, helping you get organized and feel confident in the path forward you choose to take.

Table of contents

Research proposal purpose, research proposal examples, research design and methods, contribution to knowledge, research schedule, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about research proposals.

Academics often have to write research proposals to get funding for their projects. As a student, you might have to write a research proposal as part of a grad school application , or prior to starting your thesis or dissertation .

In addition to helping you figure out what your research can look like, a proposal can also serve to demonstrate why your project is worth pursuing to a funder, educational institution, or supervisor.

Research proposal aims
Show your reader why your project is interesting, original, and important.
Demonstrate your comfort and familiarity with your field.
Show that you understand the current state of research on your topic.
Make a case for your .
Demonstrate that you have carefully thought about the data, tools, and procedures necessary to conduct your research.
Confirm that your project is feasible within the timeline of your program or funding deadline.

Research proposal length

The length of a research proposal can vary quite a bit. A bachelor’s or master’s thesis proposal can be just a few pages, while proposals for PhD dissertations or research funding are usually much longer and more detailed. Your supervisor can help you determine the best length for your work.

One trick to get started is to think of your proposal’s structure as a shorter version of your thesis or dissertation , only without the results , conclusion and discussion sections.

Writing a research proposal can be quite challenging, but a good starting point could be to look at some examples. We’ve included a few for you below.

  • Example research proposal #1: “A Conceptual Framework for Scheduling Constraint Management”
  • Example research proposal #2: “Medical Students as Mediators of Change in Tobacco Use”

Like your dissertation or thesis, the proposal will usually have a title page that includes:

  • The proposed title of your project
  • Your supervisor’s name
  • Your institution and department

The first part of your proposal is the initial pitch for your project. Make sure it succinctly explains what you want to do and why.

Your introduction should:

  • Introduce your topic
  • Give necessary background and context
  • Outline your  problem statement  and research questions

To guide your introduction , include information about:

  • Who could have an interest in the topic (e.g., scientists, policymakers)
  • How much is already known about the topic
  • What is missing from this current knowledge
  • What new insights your research will contribute
  • Why you believe this research is worth doing

As you get started, it’s important to demonstrate that you’re familiar with the most important research on your topic. A strong literature review  shows your reader that your project has a solid foundation in existing knowledge or theory. It also shows that you’re not simply repeating what other people have already done or said, but rather using existing research as a jumping-off point for your own.

In this section, share exactly how your project will contribute to ongoing conversations in the field by:

  • Comparing and contrasting the main theories, methods, and debates
  • Examining the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches
  • Explaining how will you build on, challenge, or synthesize prior scholarship

Following the literature review, restate your main  objectives . This brings the focus back to your own project. Next, your research design or methodology section will describe your overall approach, and the practical steps you will take to answer your research questions.

?

To finish your proposal on a strong note, explore the potential implications of your research for your field. Emphasize again what you aim to contribute and why it matters.

For example, your results might have implications for:

  • Improving best practices
  • Informing policymaking decisions
  • Strengthening a theory or model
  • Challenging popular or scientific beliefs
  • Creating a basis for future research

Last but not least, your research proposal must include correct citations for every source you have used, compiled in a reference list . To create citations quickly and easily, you can use our free APA citation generator .

Some institutions or funders require a detailed timeline of the project, asking you to forecast what you will do at each stage and how long it may take. While not always required, be sure to check the requirements of your project.

Here’s an example schedule to help you get started. You can also download a template at the button below.

3. Data collection and preparation with selected participants and code interviews 24th March
4. Data analysis of interview transcripts 22nd April
5. Writing 17th June
6. Revision final work 28th July

If you are applying for research funding, chances are you will have to include a detailed budget. This shows your estimates of how much each part of your project will cost.

Make sure to check what type of costs the funding body will agree to cover. For each item, include:

  • Cost : exactly how much money do you need?
  • Justification : why is this cost necessary to complete the research?
  • Source : how did you calculate the amount?

To determine your budget, think about:

  • Travel costs : do you need to go somewhere to collect your data? How will you get there, and how much time will you need? What will you do there (e.g., interviews, archival research)?
  • Materials : do you need access to any tools or technologies?
  • Help : do you need to hire any research assistants for the project? What will they do, and how much will you pay them?

Once you’ve decided on your research objectives , you need to explain them in your paper, at the end of your problem statement .

Keep your research objectives clear and concise, and use appropriate verbs to accurately convey the work that you will carry out for each one.

I will compare …

A research aim is a broad statement indicating the general purpose of your research project. It should appear in your introduction at the end of your problem statement , before your research objectives.

Research objectives are more specific than your research aim. They indicate the specific ways you’ll address the overarching aim.

A PhD, which is short for philosophiae doctor (doctor of philosophy in Latin), is the highest university degree that can be obtained. In a PhD, students spend 3–5 years writing a dissertation , which aims to make a significant, original contribution to current knowledge.

A PhD is intended to prepare students for a career as a researcher, whether that be in academia, the public sector, or the private sector.

A master’s is a 1- or 2-year graduate degree that can prepare you for a variety of careers.

All master’s involve graduate-level coursework. Some are research-intensive and intend to prepare students for further study in a PhD; these usually require their students to write a master’s thesis . Others focus on professional training for a specific career.

Critical thinking refers to the ability to evaluate information and to be aware of biases or assumptions, including your own.

Like information literacy , it involves evaluating arguments, identifying and solving problems in an objective and systematic way, and clearly communicating your ideas.

The best way to remember the difference between a research plan and a research proposal is that they have fundamentally different audiences. A research plan helps you, the researcher, organize your thoughts. On the other hand, a dissertation proposal or research proposal aims to convince others (e.g., a supervisor, a funding body, or a dissertation committee) that your research topic is relevant and worthy of being conducted.

Research Proposal On Unemployment

Unemployment is the condition which is characterized with the incapability of an individual to find a job of any kind. The problem of unemployment is becoming more and more serious with every new year, because the population constantly rises and the employers can not create enough workplaces to satisfy the needs of everyone. Unemployment depends on the range of factors. First of all, it is the number of people, who need work, then, the policy of the country aimed at the provision its citizens with workplaces and finally, the level of education and skills of the unemployed.

Essay Example on Unemployment Proposal

The last factor is very important nowadays, because there are always popular professions and young people decide to study at colleges and universities and become economists, lawyers, managers, etc. but it is obvious that these professions are not in need any more.

There are so many qualified lawyers and economists, that the country and the whole world does not require them in such amounts.

On the other hand, such professions as engineers, carpenters, plumbers, etc. are in great need, because today young people are very ambitious and do not want to master manual work. The decisions of the governments are very similar. Manual professions are awarded with the same and even higher salaries than the intellectual work of teachers and lawyers to encourage young people go in for manual professions.

Unemployment has always existed in the human society and the problem fairly can not be solved. This problem is extremely actual in such countries as Pakistan, Ghana, Nigeria, India, Kenya etc.

Proficient in: Economics

“ Ok, let me say I’m extremely satisfy with the result while it was a last minute thing. I really enjoy the effort put in. ”

The only thing which can be done by the government is the reduction of the rate of unemployment to some small percent. A well-analyzed research proposal should be logically-structured, interesting and informative. One should investigate the problem profoundly to realize the meaning of unemployment, its cause and effect, types, factors which influence the phenomenon, the geography of unemployment, etc. When one writes a research proposal, he is supposed to possess clever ideas which can be wise enough to be able to defeat the problem of unemployment.

One should prepare a brief paper which explains the importance of the problem and contains effective solutions to it.

It does not worth mentioning that every research proposal is a difficult assignment for students, because it is not quite easy to prepare an interesting convincing paper which can persuade the readers in the importance of the problem under research. In order to see how to compose a successful paper correctly, a free example research proposal on unemployment problem will be useful for every inexperienced student. When he takes advantage of a free sample research proposal in Kenya, he will be aware of the standards and rules of proper paper writing, the styles, formats and manner of presentation of the information.

These problems range from inadequate basic formal education resulting in high level of unemployment particularly for girls, inadequate access to credit and micro-finance facilities, attitudinal problems of young people towards certain categories of jobs, high incidence mis allocation, and inadequate training in informal jobs to help create self employment., These problems coupled with the problems militating against agricultural development left a lot of young people unemployed in the country. The objective of the paper was to assess the progress made using the agriculture employment intervention programs to reduce youth unemployment. The study was conducted in three local government areas of Edo State, Nigeria. The methodology included qualitative research that used focus group discussions to generate data, which was then analysed and interpreted. The subsequent results were positive, recommending both a continuation and further application of the program. Policy improvements were also identified in relation to the difficulties found in increasing participation among urban dwellers who negatively associated the work with hard, physically demanding and stressful labour. This common viewpoint indicated that the selection of youth participants should include the criteria of rural resilience and coping abilities. The results also highlighted that the implementation of the program at times did not follow the natural production cycle for cropping and that system support was limited for the beneficiaries. It was also recommended that future programs must be well articulated, designed, resourced and piloted before full implementation, for sustainable results. Supervision and monitoring must be closely done and performance compared against expectation and the resourcing of the participants in the program must be adequate and timely. While insightful, there did exist factors that impacted the quality of the study. Most of the participants in the study had close links with the government as employee or beneficiaries of the scheme. The need to protect their employment and income left them often reserved in their opinions and comments.

This paper aims at exploring the Dynamics of Youth Unemployment Outlook in South Sudan through a case study approach by assessing the nature and extent of youth unemployment problem, the major factors contributing to youth unemployment, the impact of the various policies, legal frameworks and programs that have been implemented for purposes of addressing youth unemployment, and recommendations of the alternatives policies and programs that can address youth unemployment in South Sudan. As this paper asserts, there is a growing global concern about youth unemployment as the global economy is being threatened by the challenge of creating productive jobs in a bid to sustain economic growth and maintain social cohesion. Further, the implications of youth unemployment are both social economic and political and as such ignoring the roles played by the youth in the society amounts to threatening the very survival of a country like South Sudan. The problem of youth unemployment is also one of the few development and policy concerns that are common to both developing and developed countries, especially during this period when the study is undertaken. The study is also concerned with the concept of the youth bulge which has been seen as a common phenomenon in many developing countries. In South Sudan it has been established that unemployment levels are higher among the youth. The prevalence of youth unemployment in South Sudan with its associate factors continues to entangle the South Sudanese society. Its negative impact is posing complex economic, political, environmental, social and moral policy issues for South Sudan. Addressing youth employment will mean better utilization of human capital, reduction in the growing social problems and improving the diminishing economic growth for South Sudan. Key conceptual framework issues for addressing unemployment in South Sudan are; employment creation, employability, entrepreneurship, and equal opportunity and acceleration of inclusive economic growth.

Research Proposal on Micro and Small Enterprises

Micro and small enterprises are the small types of business which are characterized with small investing, low profit and rapid turnover of the capital. Evidently, micro and small enterprises can be called the most important sector of the state economy after medium business. The average developed country has the 34% profit into its budget form micro and small enterprises and the sums are really serious and improve the country’s economy profoundly.

Naturally, these enterprises solve several problems – economical and social ones. For example, due to micro and small enterprises the country solves the problem of unemployment and poverty, because many people have the chance to start their own profitable private or family business and provide themselves with everything they need. Moreover, these types of business supply more than 30% of the country’s income and provide more than 30% of goods for export, what can be called serious profit for the state. Micro and small enterprises are extremely popular in India and for the majority of people these firms are the single source of profit.

Due to the growing popularity of these types of business India is developing rapidly and defeats the problem of poverty in the intensive ways.

Micro and small enterprises have got their names due to the limited financing for equipment and machinery used in business.

The owners of these enterprises have received little credits and have the chance to develop their business further. Micro and small enterprises are characterized with high capital turnover, because in order to earn a lot one has to produce and sell his cheap goods frequently. The majority of the firms of these types are involved into agriculture and the sphere of services.

Micro and small enterprises are the forms of business which do not involve serious capital into their establishment and development. The student who has the task to prepare a good project about micro and small enterprises should dwell on the issues which can be regarded as the most important and urgent ones. The young professional has to design the list of the points and questions which will be observed in the research paper and provide the professor with the methodology of writing and research of the assignment. Finally, one should remember about the persuasive manner of presentation of information about these types of enterprises.

The student should follow the additional piece of help from the Internet reading about the manner of convincing writing through a free example research proposal on micro and small enterprises in Ethiopia analyzed by an expert. Every free sample research proposal on the role of micro and small enterprises in reducing poverty is quite useful if the student does not know about the right structure and format of the text and needs a hint for writing.
