Just what do you say in goodbye speech for a co-worker?

How do you find the right words? And where do you start?

To make it easier, follow and complete each of the steps below.

The end result will be a farewell speech for your colleague you'll be proud to give. And even better still, it'll be a speech they'll be delighted to receive! ☺

Step One: Brainstorming - collecting material

The first step is to gather your material for the body, or main part, of your farewell speech. The easiest way I know to do this is to brainstorm.

How to brainstorm to get ideas

Either download and print off a A4 sized blank brainstorm template to use, the one in the image below, or grab a blank sheet of paper of your own.

Use the four headings below as triggers or prompts to get your ideas flowing.

Put down everything you think of, or associate with your colleague, under each of them. (Just like I've done in the example image above.) Do not stop to get the spelling right. Do not stop to edit. You can do all of that later.

What’s important now is to get down as many content ideas as possible. (If you don’t know something you think is vital to include, make a note to find out later.)

When you can’t think of anything more, move on to the next prompt.

1. Basic Facts – History with Company

(You need to get these accurate. If you don’t know, or are unsure about anything, ask.)

How long has your colleague been employed by the company?
What positions or areas have they worked in over that time?
What are they leaving to do? Take a new job in another company? Travel? Retire? Go on parental leave? Have they been promoted or transferred to another section or branch of the company? Or is what they’re going to be doing in the future private and they would prefer it not mentioned? Like, for instance, they're going to be dealing with a major health issue and don't want everybody to know about it.

2. Positive qualities or characteristics

What positive qualities or characteristics automatically spring to mind when you think of your colleague?

Note them down, with examples.

For example:

Fun loving: organized ‘crazy hat’ and t-shirt Fridays.
Genuinely caring and considerate: made a point of always acknowledging what had been done by someone to get a job done, was careful to NOT overload already stretched workers, watched for signs of stress.
Honest and respectful: direct and sincere in dealings with others, acknowledged their own part and what had been done by others in the success or otherwise of projects.
Collaborative: didn’t need to be a solo hero – could easily involve others and share the spotlight – a team player.
Responsible: took ownership of tasks assigned to them, made sure they delivered the very best they could.

3. Work stories: serious and amusing

Over the time you’ve been working together what stories can you share that best illustrate your colleague’s positive qualities? Are there major projects or milestone developments that could or should be mentioned? What have you jointly achieved? Highlight your shared successes!

For example:

the development of the hugely successful mentoring and ongoing training scheme to nurture junior product developers
the push to diversify and develop high value niche products

What about genuinely amusing, or funny, stories you know your colleague will be OK about sharing publicly?

the time they thought it was ‘crazy hat’ Friday and arrived at the office in time to meet the trade delegation from China in the foyer wearing an oversize pink furry top hat decorated with bright yellow daffodils bouncing and nodding at the ends of long green springs.

4. Special skills and their impact

What special skills does your colleague have that you admire or are inspired by? Perhaps they have great communication skills. Or maybe they’re a whizz at collecting, organizing and analyzing information for reports.

What impact did those skills have on you? On the business?

the ability to pull together useful, easily understood, yet complex, spread sheets quickly

Step Two: Reviewing your material

Go through all of the ideas you've generated.

As you do, consider the purpose of the speech, the tone you want, who is going to be listening (the audience) and then choose what you want to use from each section of your brainstorm.

Remember you have 3 -5 minutes speaking time. You can not include everything! Take the best and strongest of what you have.

Step Three: Organizing the body of your speech

Enter what you have chosen under the right headings in the farewell speech outline template . This material will form the body of your farewell speech.

See the examples below. All these content ideas have been taken from the initial brainstorm (Step One).

1. Basic facts: history with company

[name of colleague eg. Sam] has been with us 5 years.
Started as senior product development manager and soon became the new group product development manager.
Leaving to go travelling!

2. Positive qualities, with examples

Fun loving: organized ‘crazy hat’ and t-shirt Fridays
Genuinely caring and considerate: made a point of always acknowledging what had been done by someone to get a job done, was careful to NOT overload already stretched workers, watched for signs of stress

to quickly collate and transform vast quantities of information into readable, actionable reports which laid the foundation for the success of the projects. I’ve learned a lot from being alongside them.

Step Four: Brainstorm the conclusion

Use the four headings below as a prompt to note a few ideas to use in your ending.

Do this either on a blank sheet of paper of your own or download and print a blank A4 sized speech conclusion and introduction template to use.

1. What is the impact of your colleague leaving?

What will you miss? What will change?

I know it's selfish, but how on earth are we going to pull together the monthly reports without you? And who is going to delight us with a new silly hat every week? We definitely have a few challenges ahead.

2. Best wishes

Send your colleague off with your best wishes for whatever it is they are going to do next.

Despite knowing we’re going to miss you, we’re excited that you’re going to new and challenging opportunity. We can’t think of a better person for the job. You deserve it!

We’re really happy that your dreams have come true: that you’re going to be travelling and exploring the world. Just don’t rub it in too hard and too often with instagrammable moments.

On behalf of us all thank you for everything over your time with us: your encouragement, support, humor, and your leadership.

Thanks for being a great team mate, for teaching me your special spread sheet skills, and most importantly, for sharing my love of chocolate. I couldn’t have wished for a sweeter colleague!

4. Final comment

Please don't be a stranger. Our door is always open!
Please remember that to us you are much more than a colleague. You are a friend, and friends keep in touch. We look forward to catching up with you sometime soon.
Go well, go strong, and go knowing we think the world of you, and wish you all the best. Keep in touch!

Step Five: Brainstorm the introduction

Write the speech introduction. You’ll want a couple of sentences to welcome everyone and to acknowledge why you’ve got together.

(There is space on the printable conclusion/introduction brainstorm template to do this.)

Good afternoon everyone, and thank you for coming. As we all know, we've gathered to say goodbye to [name] who is leaving us today to take on a new role as [insert name of role e.g. Director of Product Management] for [insert name of company or organization e.g. The Q-R Group]
Who else has been marking off the days until [name of person] leaves us? From next Monday there’ll be a gap in our team. They’ll be [what ever it is they’re going to do e.g. basking in the sun on a beach in Bali] and we’ll be wondering just how we’re going to manage without them!
Thanks for coming along to help farewell [name of person]. It’s great to see so many of you here. I hope you’ve brought your tissues to mop up the tears!

Step Six: Linking the pieces together

In this step you're going to link the pieces together to make a complete speech.

You'll see in my example speech I've used most of the notes from the outline, and I've added words where needed to tie it altogether.

Here is the full text of the farewell speech for Sam: your much respected and liked colleague. ☺

It is 516 words long which will take approximately 3-4 minutes to say. (See how many words per minute in a speech for more information.)

Sample farewell speech for a colleague leaving

"Who else has been marking off the days until Sam finally leaves us? It’s sad but from next Monday there’ll be a huge hole in our team. She’ll be basking in the sun on a beach in Bali and we’ll be wondering how we’re going to manage without her.

Sam’s been with us for five years now. She began as a senior product development manager and it didn’t seem that long before she was promoted to new group product development manager, a position she’s held for last three years.

And now she’s got her passport updated, bought flight tickets, and she’s off travelling.

I know I speak on behalf of all of us when I say how much we’ve enjoyed working alongside you Sam. We’ve love and admire the initiatives you put in place. They tick all the boxes: increased diversification, sustainability, productivity and workplace satisfaction.

Crazy Hat Friday reminds us to not take ourselves too seriously and to laugh! Something we all need to do.

The development of the recently implemented very successful mentoring and ongoing training scheme to nurture junior product developers will help ensure we continue to grow. While the push to diversify and develop high value niche products has already proven itself lucrative. You were right! There was a need.

In our opinion, what made these initiatives even better was how you put them in place. You make it easy for people to cooperate and collaborate with each other. Step seven: testing and rehearsing

To be absolutely sure you've got the tone and timing right, that you've included everything you should and haven’t put in anything that would be best left out, read your speech to a couple of trusted colleagues. Be guided by their comments, and alter your speech if needed.

Once you're satisfied that you've done the best you can please rehearse. Practice is what makes the difference! Getting the words sorted is an important step. However rehearsing can take your speech from ordinary to extraordinary!

How To Give A Memorable Farewell Speech

It’s your last day on the job. Your colleagues have gathered in a conference room, gotten you a few nice going away gifts, and purchased a cake in your honor.

Suddenly, your co-workers begin chanting: Speech! Speech! Speech!

Your adrenaline surges, your heart begins pounding. Oh no! A goodbye speech! If you’re like most people, you’ll mutter something like this:

“Okay, well, I wasn’t expecting to say anything, but, well, I guess what I’d like to say is that it’s been an amazing eight years here. You’re all an amazing team, you’re like a second family, and we’ve really been through some ups and downs together … okay, a lot of downs together. But I will really miss you, although this isn’t really goodbye, because I’m going to stay in touch with all of you…whether you like it or not!”

101 Ways to Open a Speech Copy Tease Clickable

I’ve been guilty of giving that bland farewell speech as well. In 1999, for example, when I left ABC News’ Nightline, at the time one of the most prominent evening news programs, the staff gathered in a conference room to send me off. Ted Koppel, the host of the program was there, as were the executive producer, all of the senior producers, on-air correspondents, and others. Frankly, I was overwhelmed that so many important people thought enough of me to have gathered in my honor. I made it through a few sentences, got emotional, and abruptly ended my farewell speech.

Tips for Your Best Farewell Speech

There’s no specific formula for how to give a great goodbye speech to colleagues at work, but here are some tips on how to deliver your best farewell speech.

Tell a story or two. Stick to anecdotes that are humorous and self-effacing, as well as heartfelt. Don’t be afraid to offer some details of your personal biography – particularly an episode that captures a universal human experience or condition. Reveal gratitude or offer thanks. Share with your colleagues how they helped you to do your job better, allowed you to grow as a person, and/or helped you to understand something about yourself. Keep it short and sweet. Strip your stories and remarks to their most essential details. It will help you to pack a lot of content – and offer a meaningful message – in a short amount of time. Make it original. When you focus on personal anecdotes and revelations, you deliver a farewell speech that is unique to you and far from trite.

Example Goodbye Speech to Colleagues

As I look back at my farewell speech to my colleagues, I wish I could do it over again. If I could, my goodbye speech would have looked more like this:

“Most people are nervous to meet Ted Koppel. I know I was. When I finally worked up the nerve to say hello, I confidently stuck out my hand and introduced myself. I then promptly took a step forward and caught my foot on an open file cabinet drawer, which sent me plummeting to the ground. (pause) It took me a good two weeks to get past that humiliation. When I did, I quickly learned that this was a place that offered endless opportunities to a young staffer, far more than I had earned. You were open to my story ideas, welcomed me into edit rooms, sent me on video shoots, and gave me the opportunity to make some very public mistakes. People know Nightline is a great show, but they probably don’t know how great its staff is at making a young, aspiring journalist feel like a fully initiated part of the team. My mother tells me that my grandfather never missed a Nightline . He died in 1982, when I was nine years old and when Nightline was only two. To this day, every night when I hear that opening theme music, I think of him, and how proud he would have been to know that his grandson worked here, with all of you. Thank you.”

As you can see, this version is humorous, heartfelt and reveals a bit about who I am . How I start this farewell speech is with a funny story and then I move to a serious point – a thank you for not making an inexperienced staffer feel so inexperienced. I keep the remarks purposefully short but pack a lot of content into the 90 seconds it takes to deliver. And, it’s entirely original. No one else could deliver these remarks, because no one else has had all of these specific experiences.

When I left the newsroom where I’d worked for six years, the people in my department threw a party for me. It’s one of my deepest regrets that I didn’t speak in any sort of official way! I made the same mistake as Daphine. I think about it often. I widh i would have read this back then.

Great advice, wish I’d read it before I left my first job. I was much loved and so popular that the whole building arranged a surprise party for me. My boss presented me with a cake and flowers and a gift and said such lovely things about me that, when everyone called for a speech, I became so nervous and panicked and punched my boss to the ground. Never will I be caught out like that again!

When I left my post as a director and scriptwriter of a daily radio show I knew I could not deliver a speech, so I did not. I wrote it down and send it to each work mate, and to my bosses. I made it in the same wording an extension of one of our editorial pieces, and the top brass decided to air it the day next to my departure. I was overwhelmed. Many thanks for sharing your moments.

While it’s a good idea to add big achievements, you can also make it more special for the collegue by mentioning something small that they might have done that got overshadowed by all the other big stuff. The leaving person might not even be aware of doing it!

For example, if the collegue was someone who could always make people’s Mondays feel like Fridays, then that’s a pretty big achievement too, right? Make sure to include it in your speech!

2. Narrate Anecdotes and Stories

What’s an emotional speech without a story or two, eh?

Anecdotes and stories are not just a great way of making a speech lively and interesting, but they can also make the speech more personal both; for the person leaving and the ones staying behind.

So, try to include at least 2-3 anecdotes in your speech.

If you don’t know the co-worker that well or are simply unsure of what to include, you can reach out to someone who was close to the person retiring and ask for their input.

3. Don’t Forget The Jokes

Humor is a great way to level up any speech, and a retirement speech is no exception to it’s charm. Humor works to lighten the overall mood, which can be quite heavy for a day like this.

So, try to sprinkle a couple of jokes throughout your speech. You can even combine jokes and anecdotes and tell a funny story –maybe a memorable incident that happened with the retiring co-worker in the past!

4. Add A Personal Touch

Don’t just copy paste a random speech from Google. Instead, take your time with the speech. Remember that retirement is a cornerstone in most people’s life, and treat it as such.

Adding little personal details here and there–little quirks that your colleague had, or memorable moments they had at the workplace–goes a great way to make the person in question feel important, liked, and most importantly: appreciated for their efforts.

5. Talk About Their Personality

What was the colleague like? What made them different from other people in the workplace? If there was one word that you could describe their personality, what would it be?

Talking about their personal qualities makes the person retiring more real. It reminds them–and the people listening–that they were not just another part in a corporate machine, but a human being. That is someone with feelings, memories, good days, and bad days–just like you.

6. Don’t Neglect Speaking About The Future

While it’s important to give due importance to the past while delivering a retirement speech, it’s also imperative to not neglect talking about what’s ahead i.e the future. Often, people can get so fixated on the good stuff in the past that they don’t notice the amazing stuff coming up ahead.

Is there something the person leaving always wanted to do, but couldn’t because they were so busy with work?

Say, did they always want to go to a nature retreat, spend more time with their spouse, or work at that bar at the end of the street?

Well, now would be the time to bring that up!

Don’t just ramble on about stuff that’s already done. Talk about the opportunities coming upz too!

7. Include mementos and gifts

If a colleague is leaving work–especially if they’re someone who’s contributed a lot to a place–chances are, they’re going to be given a small memento for their work all these years. This can be given by anyone–another co-worker, you, or even higher-ups.

So, make sure to check in with your co-workers about the status of a memento. If it’s going to be included, you can include a small introduction leading up to the handing of the gift right into your speech end.

8. When In Doubt, Ask

This piece of advice can come especially in handy if you didn’t know the former co-worker that well. If you’re unsure whether to include a personal detail or not–or are simply in a dearth of personal information–go ahead and ask someone else for their input. This someone else can be anyone: a close friend of the colleague, a family member, your boss, or even the colleague themself!

Don’t be shy to ask questions.

Dear Hannah,

Today is the day you retire from St.Mary’s Public School after over twenty years of teaching English to high-schoolers—most of whom had no interest in learning anything in the first place!

In spite of this hindrance, you never ceased delivering the best you possibly could. When you first started working with us, you were simply a substitute teacher that the students saw occasionally. Remember your first day and the prank that the students played on you?

The entire class banded together and attacked you with a string of questions—none of which had anything to do with English, by the way. But instead of waiting for you to answer, the moment you opened your mouth, the student pretended to fall asleep!

Once you got the hang of it, you turned into a prankster yourself! You played along with the class by listening to a student begin a question but then acted like you’d fallen asleep—just like they had when you were trying to answer—before they finished it.

You were the only topic of discussion—both, in the classroom and later, in the staff room. In fact, your little stunt with the students had made most of the other teachers realize that they needed to step up their game, too! We had a friendly little competition going after you joined us permanently!

And this was not an isolated incident. Over the years, you have inspired and connected with multiple generations of students and classrooms. So many children have fallen in love with the English language because you taught them to love it.

Just look around the room and you will know that I’m telling the truth—although the crowd could also be because this is probably the last time many of us will get to gobble down your famous baking concoctions!

Truly, we will miss your cookies almost as much as we will miss you!

You have spent almost your whole shaping the lives of people who would later go on to shape the world. You have given your one hundred percent to the classroom—now it’s time you give your one hundred percent to yourself!

5 Ways To Make A Retirement Speech (More) Special

Now that you know all the stuff you need to include in a retirement speech and have an example of how to phrase it in hand, let’s move onto the next step: how to add that touch of uniqueness to your speech and make it truly memorable.

1. Prepare A Skit

Adding a skit is an excellent way of making a retirement speech memorable. The theme for the skit can be anything. However, make sure it’s relevant to the retiring person’s life. A good idea is to structure the skit around some memorable incident from the person’s time at the workplace.

It can be a funny incident, or an emotional one, or even an instance when they inspired you!

If you’re not sure about which incident to pick, try asking someone who’s close friends with the person. The skit doesn’t need to be over-the-top or elaborate. You don’t need to get costumes or spend hours preparing it. Everyone has work to do and deadlines to meet.

To do this, collect videos and photographs or any other material relevant to the departing employee and organize the contents into a small video that you can show either before or after your speech! Make sure the video isn’t too long, and that it has a positive note.

3. Give Them A Personalized Souvenir

While a token of appreciation is something they’re going to get from the company’s side, if a co-worker has truly touched your life, then giving them a personalized souvenir from the employee’s side is another great idea to make a retirement day unforgettable.

The souvenir doesn’t have to be something expensive or over-the-top either. Rather, something handmade or something personalized might be a better idea.

For example, you can give the employee a jar filled with little note cards that the other employees have written for them.

4. Switch Up The Format

Another way to make a retirement speech unique is by switching up the traditional speech format for something more fun!

Instead, you could write and deliver the speech like a poem–or even a short story! It seems like just yesterday Sugar fans were struggling to wrap their heads around that mind-boggling alien reveal . Heck, they still are! Yet the Season 1 finale of Apple TV+’s unexpectedly out-of-this-world noir drama is already upon us, so buckle up and prepare for liftoff to another planet — kidding! Well, sort of…

When we last left John Sugar (Colin Farrell) in Season 1’s penultimate episode , he had killed Stallings, learned Olivia’s location (a creepy basement torture chamber belonging to a Senator’s son), and rescued her in the nick of time.

Season 1, Episode 8, “Farewell,” picks up right where Sugar left off and shows our favorite nostalgic humanoid wrapping up his latest case, dealing with his group having to head back home, and learning life-altering info about his past that drastically shapes his future.

Sugar Ending Explained: Episode 8, “Farewell” Recap

“Three words. That’s the best part. A phone call. Letting them know. The nightmare is over…Three words: I found her.”

Another sultry Colin Farrell voiceover opens the episode alongside black and white footage of John Sugar driving his classic car (and Olivia) to safety. We rewind a bit back to that creepy basement, with the show now in color. He locates a terrified Olivia under the stairwell, carries her outside, and places her in the back seat of her car, reminding himself and viewers, “Everything ends.”

Back in the hotel room, Melanie is temping herself with the sight of alcohol bottles when she gets the call. Olivia wakes up Melanie with above her, and the two embrace, letting themselves feel the full weight of what’s happened. Sugar excuses himself, as if he has no business bearing witness to such intense human emotion. Next time we see him, he’s strolling barefoot on a beach, pondering the strangeness of endings. “I’m glad this case is over, well not completely yet…” he says. Then, he’s back in his room, suited up and staring at the CD he swiped from the basement, marked #44. He realizes he’s obsessing, but he tells himself that’s what PIs do. “They turn over the last rock,” he says. “I need to hurry. All of us do.”

Speaking of hurrying, Sugar’s boss Miller is speeding down an open road when a cop car pulls him over. It seems like a typical traffic stop until the woman requests his license and registration, then shoots him three times. Meanwhile, Sugar stops by Ruby’s house, where she tells him Henry is being stubborn and she’s glad he found Olivia. “They’re probably looking for us,” she stresses, reminding Sugar that he exposed the Senator’s son Ryan Pavich. Everyone in their group has to return to their home planet by the end of the day, and last call is at sunset.

Sugar heads inside to check in with Henry, who’s still jotting thoughts down in his notebook. (“And now with the departure, I realize I’m alone…”) Before Sugar heads to Jonathan Siegel’s house, Henry gives him a CD player so he can double check a hunch. Sugar agrees to pick Henry up before sunset then heads off to check in with Jonathan, listening to the CD he swiped from Pavich on the way, which is filled with deranged rants and records of his torture sessions. Once Sugar arrives at Jonathan’s, he stops to give Margit his condolences and heads upstairs to say goodbye. Mr. Siegel offers him a job as head of security for his company, but Sugar turns it down. He looks out the window at Olivia and flashes back to a hooded figure on what appears to be his home planet. Then he and Jonathan get down to business.

Sugar learns that Olivia hasn’t said a word about what happened in the basement, then he lets Jonathan know he had Clifford’s body go missing from the trunk of her car. Before he leaves, Sugar hands Jonathan the polaroids he found while searching for clues earlier in the season. “I recognize dress Rachel’s wearing. It’s the same dress your wife Lorraine wore in The Winds of Change . You took those pictures, didn’t you?” Jonathan confirms Rachel was unhappy and he was drawn to her free spirit nature. Sugar insinuates that Olivia is Jonathan’s daughter, and though he doesn’t confirm, it’s heavily implied. As Sugar leaves the house, he glances at Olivia again and has another vision of his home planet. We see his blue self standing beside the same hooded figure, whose identity is still hidden.

Next stop? Melanie’s house, where Sugar drops off his pup and steps inside to say goodbye. He opens up to Melanie, telling her his sister was taken by somebody a long time ago, but they never knew who. “That’s kind of why I do what I do,” he reveals, before grabbing her hands and giving her a glimpse at his reality. With Melanie’s hands in his, Sugar’s eyes turn blue and she silently tears up over the sight. “I’ve never shown a human being. I’m not supposed to. It’s strictly against the rules,” Farrell’s voice says as Sugar drives away. “But I’m glad I did.”

On her way to evacuate, Ruby calls Sugar, stressing, “They’re hunting us…the humans we told you about. They want us gone so no one can ever learn about our pact.” On his way to pick up Henry, Sugar continues listening to the CD and has a haunting breakthrough: Pavich wasn’t alone with his captives in the basement. He speeds back to Jonathan’s house and asks Olivia if she knows who else was with her down there. Though she never saw the second man, she heard him writing, which leads to Sugar’s epiphany. It was an observer. And not just any observer. It was Henry !!!!!!

When Sugar arrives back at the house, it’s all cleared out except for a phone that’s ringing. He follows the sound upstairs and when he answers, Henry’s voice comes through the receiver. “So now you know. Once you started listening I knew it was only a matter of time,” he says. When Sugar accuses him of sitting there, watching, and doing nothing, Henry argues that he observed, learned, and did his job. He tells Sugar he’s staying on Earth — that he belongs on there, as does Sugar.

Before Henry hangs up, he tells John he left him rose petals. Sugar finds a pile sitting outside the closet door. And inside, he finds the same cape-like dress the hooded figure in his vision was wearing. The scene plays in his mind again, but this time, the figure turns, reavealing a blue skinned, blue eyed woman: Sugar’s sister, Jen.

In case you had any doubts, Sugar helpfully spells out what’s going down for us in a voiceover: “Jen. Henry. He took Jen. Is she alive? Is she here? Observe and report and make sure the mistakes don’t become ours. And look at Henry, trapped in a cycle of violence. What about me? Am I any different? I like being here — how I can feel hurt, taste, touch, dream, hate. Have I become more human, like Henry? Need to hurry. Need to find him.”

In Sugar’s vision of his planet, he and Jen are standing together watching a group of iridescent star-looking particles flutter through the air. Perhaps they’re space birds, because on Earth, the fluttering creatures turn into a flock of seagulls as Sugar watches the sky from the beach. Fully suited up, he lets the waves wash over his bare feet, prompting a young girl behind him to ask, “What are you doing? You don’t have a bathing suit?” Sugar assures her he does, just not with him, and she advises him not to go any farther because of sharks. With a small smile, he thanks her. Then gets back to business.

“I’m gonna find Henry Thorpe no matter how long it takes. I’m gonna find him,” he vows. He drives to meet Ruby at the evac (an airplane runway) and she reveals, “We knew about Pavich. That was Henry’s idea. We all went along with it. We all did. For the mission. Jen — I had no idea.” She asks Sugar if he’s OK — what with his hand and the voices in his head and *checks notes* everything. Before they can get into it, a circle appears in the sky overhead, which she says is the last ride home.

Sugar reveals he’s going to stay on Earth, and she reminds him all he saw was Jen’s dress — that more than likely she’s already dead. “Probably,” he replies. “But Henry’s alive and he’s here and we brought him here. Now he’s looking for human beings like him…looking for people he can learn from, people can teach…”

“I love my home. I’ll miss my home,” Sugar says. “And I’ll miss you, Ruby. I will. And all the others. But this place, these people, for better or worse, I like them. I’m like them.”

The two say goodbye and Sugar wishes her safe travels. He hops back in his Corvette, speeds off, and looks up to see a line in the sky. It’s Ruby heading home.

Before Sugar ‘s credits roll, we get one final Farrell voiceover. “Man oh man. A movie ending is a strange thing. You know it’s coming and yet you spent all this time laughing, crying, you’re surprised when the credits roll,” he says. “THE END” cards from old movies flash on the screen, and he delivers a final line: “But sooner or later when the lights come on, you put on your jacket. It’s time to go home.”

Just like that, we’re left to wonder if Sugar will be back for Season 2 .

When Jurgen Klopp announced that he would be leaving Liverpool at the start of 2024, every fan of the club dreaded the day he would finally walk away. He's transformed the football club from a side that was struggling to qualify for the Champions League to one at the top of the Premier League consistently. Some will call it remarkable. Others will brandish it as remarkable, but no one can deny that the German has been a legendary manager for the Reds.

His final match will see him face Wolves at Anfield — and it is naturally going to be an emotional occasion for everyone there. He is loved by the club, so when he waves goodbye to the Kop End for one last time as the flags fly high in the sky, expect tears from some of the most grown men around.

Jurgen Klopp's farewell night will take place at the M&S Bank Arena in the city. Originally known as the Liverpool Arena, it opened in 2008 at a construction cost of £164 million. The German stated during his pre-match press conference ahead of their 3-3 draw with Aston Villa that he had no involvement with the planning, but that he was looking forward to the night.

“It’s neither my idea nor am I involved in any kind of organisation, so I don’t think I could even organise tickets if I’m right,” he jokingly said.

“But it’s fine. I’m not involved in that, I have no clue what [is happening] that night. I said whatever people ask me to do, in that perspective, I will do it. If somebody wants me wherever, as much as I can make it happen, I will make it happen.

“Obviously, it’s no problem to come a week after, or nine days after, the season’s over, to come back here. If the people want that, I will be here. That’s no doubt. I assume it will probably be good. It would be nice if we could be a little bit funny. I heard John Bishop would be there. [There's] a good chance that it will be funny!”

How to Get Tickets

Tickets for the event are highly restricted. It's not hard to understand why, though, with every devoted Red in the area wanting to say one final goodbye to one of the greatest managers in a generation. Initial registration for tickets closed at 8am on Monday the 13th May before sales started on the 15th May.

Those who wanted to be able to buy tickets had to have 13 or more credits for Premier League home games between the 2022/23 season and now. Fans were able to purchase up to four tickets per organisation, whilst seasonal hospitality members were able to register their interest in any hospitality seats at the arena.

This means that it should only be members or season ticket holders at the event. However, as is often the case, some tickets will likely be available on resale sites. They will be expensive, but it might be the only way to go to the event if you don't meet the qualifying criteria.

Tickets for the final goodbye to the German aren't going to be cheap. The most affordable option is £37 for season ticket holders or members, whilst the most expensive option is £57. This excludes hospitality, and the prices for that have not been disclosed to the general public.

Thankfully, a percentage of any profit will be donated to the LFC Foundation. It means that even if the price is steep, there is still a reason to go. Seeing Klopp walk away for the final time and donate to the charity in the process makes it an appealing prospect for any eligible to go.

What is going to be happening at klopp's farewell.

The event at the M&S Bank Arena is going to be hosted by comedian John Bishop, whom Klopp is a fan of, and LFCTV’s Peter McDowall. They are well-known faces in the city and will likely produce an incredible event to send off for the German.

Part of the event will be a Q&A between the fans and the manager. It's an opportunity no beloved fan can turn down to be able to hear about his pride and honour of managing the Reds. There have been countless memories with the former Dortmund coach in the dugout; being able to hear about them will be interesting.

Alongside this, there will be special performances from Lightning Seeds, The Zutons and Alfie Boe. Just like the hosts, they are well-known names and will add to the memorable night.

When the event was announced, Klopp mentioned his excitement about the event after the end of the season.

“This is going to be a very special night, with lots of fantastic memories shared and plenty of great music too. I’m really looking forward to spending it with our fans, the heartbeat of this wonderful and unique club," he said.

Klopp has only won one Premier League trophy at Liverpool. Out of context, that is disappointing for the club, but once you consider they have been up against Manchester City , a state-oiled club who have 115 charges currently against them, it can be respected. The German has transformed the club and made them feared on a domestic and European scale.

At Anfield, he made them unbeatable, even going on a 64-match unbeaten streak at one point. One of the most memorable moments in Klopp's spell is his first trophy. Picture the scene. 2019. Liverpool have just missed out on the Premier League against Pep Guardiola's side, but they are taking the trip to the capital of Spain, Madrid, for what was going to be the trip of a lifetime.

All of this is why fans want to say goodbye to him on the 28th May. The work he has done has been remarkable — and, without him, Liverpool would have potentially been a sinking ship. The previous disappointment of Roy Hodgson and Brendan Rodgers has only showcased Klopp's success even more. The Dutchman will head for Liverpool after a dream tenure and can emulate how Jürgen Klopp makes fans feel special

F or most of Sunday, Rotterdam sat under a thick blanket of cloud, but as day ticked into evening, just as fans were streaming into De Kuip for Feyenoord’s penultimate home fixture of the season, the skies cleared. On what became a glorious, balmy evening the team comprehensively outclassed PEC Zwolle. Arne Slot, overseeing his 100th league game in charge, watched from the touchline and his son, Joep, who for the best part of three years had dreamed of being allowed into the noisiest part of the ground, stood among the ultras in the Gerard Meijer Tribune.

In the 82nd minute, the entire ground sung his father’s name and, just as Slot lifted his hands above his head to return their applause, Santiago Giménez scored the final goal in a 5-0 win. When the final whistle blew, and Slot walked towards the fans to bid farewell, the PA eschewed the ear-splitting techno that had soundtracked the rest of the night and played You’ll Never Walk Alone. Football rarely permits moments of such infinite perfection.

“It’s not a normal situation for a manager that the fans are singing your name, let alone that they do it in such a way, with the whole stadium singing,” Slot said later. “Normally it happens when a manager loses one or two games, and the whole stadium stands up to sing different songs.”

When Feyenoord host Excelsior on Sunday week, much of the Gerard Meijer Tribune will be closed in punishment for the fans’ use of flares in the KNVB Cup semi-final win over Groningen. For many of the club’s hardcore supporters, this was goodbye. “I’ve never seen Feyenoord play like this. I really mean it,” said Paul van Dijk, a season-ticket holder in that end for the last 15 years. “Players come and go, managers come and go. This is modern football, isn’t it? But this is one manager we’re very sad to see go. We’re sad, but proud. We’re proud to say he’s earned it at Feyenoord, but also sad that we need to kind of start again. I told my friends that we were living a dream with him, and now the dream is coming to an end.”

In his first season in Rotterdam, Slot took Feyenoord to third place in the league and the Europa Conference League final . In his second they won the Eredivisie title for just the second time this century, and in his third he has won the KNVB Cup, with his team on track to exceed last season’s points total and beaten to a second title only by a freakishly successful PSV Eindhoven. Now he is leaving for Liverpool , but as Slot conducted the fans’ roars after the final whistle it was hard to tell if this was an ideal moment to depart, or a ludicrous one.

“Yes, that’s a different judgment to make every time,” Slot said. “Last season the fans were quite similar to what they are now. Then it felt like things are not done here yet; I wanted to go for one extra year, or maybe even longer. But then sometimes in life opportunities come along and you have to ask yourself the question: ‘Will I continue this journey at this club, or is this a good moment to leave?’ And I’ve made that choice.”

It is only four months since Slot told an interviewer: “I have no reason to think my future will be anywhere else” and that “I could become a kind of Arsène Wenger at Feyenoord”. Instead, he will attempt to be a kind of Jürgen Klopp, in acclaim if not in method.

Though the scenes after the final whistle felt distinctly Kloppian, it was unusual behaviour from someone who is normally more reserved. Slot is a calm presence on the touchline, spending most of his time either with arms crossed or his hands in his pockets, rarely raising his voice.

“As a person he’s very down to earth, not big shouting and that kind of stuff,” said Mario Been, who came through the youth system at Feyenoord, spent six seasons in the first team before returning for two as manager, and is now a TV analyst. “I speak a lot with him, and the way he talks about football, the way he talks in general, I think he’s a very amiable man, a man that is very warm for the players. He is a human, he loves to work with people.

“From nothing he can make something. I know there are a lot of Dutch coaches that didn’t succeed in England but I think this man, when you give him the time, he can do something there. From day one he will build the way he wants to play: press high, and everybody has to do that. And he opens the eyes of the players. For example Quinten Timber, last year he was rubbish. Then Arne started talking with him, telling him: ‘You have to do more.’ Now he’s a national team player.”

In the last two seasons Feyenoord have raised €110m through player sales, with more departures expected in the summer. Giménez, who arrived from the Mexican club Cruz Azul for €6m in 2022, is one of them. “He’s a complete coach because he understands when to tell you that you did well, and when to tell you that you did bad and you need to improve,” the 23-year-old said of Slot. “I think that’s a real advantage of Arne, that he can talk with the players really well and he knows what he wants for a team. He will bring intensity in pressing, he will bring a lot of offensive plays. I think Arne loves to attack, and attack makes you strong in defence.”

On Sunday Feyenoord’s 4-1-3-2 formation became a full-on front five when in possession, with the full-backs often joining in. The centre-back Thomas Beelen – who was very impressive defensively, if less so with his distribution – occasionally carried the ball forward, leaving only two players behind him. “It was somewhere in the second half that we gave away two chances and that is, I think, typical for us,” Slot said. “We don’t concede a lot of chances and a lot of counterattacks, despite the fact that we are a very offensive team – we attack with a lot of players. Scoring five goals is not a coincidence.”

Key for their style of play is the players’ fitness: Slot may be a good coach to play for, but clearly he is not an easy one. “Even in the final minutes of the game it’s full press, running all over the pitch,” said Dennis Kranenburg, a former youth-team player who now commentates on Feyenoord’s games for Rijnmond radio. “The players like the way he communicates with them, he’s always very clear. One of them told me: ‘When the manager says before a game that this, this and this will happen; this, this and this happens.’ Everything he said before is what happened.

“He’s also very clear in his way of talking to the media. He’s a clever guy and he knows what he wants to say, and the fans hear it and they love it. That is maybe his strongest point. I think when you ask anybody here in the stadium, ‘What do you think of Arne Slot ?’ everybody will say, ‘Give him a statue, or name the stadium after him.’ Yeah, he is very popular here.”

If Sunday played out like a dream, it must have come as little surprise to a group of fans who have spent three years living one. In Liverpool another manager, despite also narrowly failing to win the league, will soon take his fans’ applause for the final time. For Slot, a new challenge awaits.
