Tigers designate JaCoby Jones for assignment

The Tigers announced they’re selecting the contract of right-hander Jason Foley from Triple-A Toledo. To create 40-man roster space, they’re designating outfielder JaCoby Jones   for assignment. Additionally, righty Michael Fulmer has been placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to June 3, with a right shoulder strain. As expected, José Ureñ a   has been reinstated from the IL to take Fulmer’s place on the active roster.

Jones’ designation registers as something of a surprise. Acquired from the Pirates at the 2015 trade deadline in exchange for Joakim Soria , Jones has appeared in the big leagues with Detroit in each of the past six seasons. He’s been a fairly regular contributor between 2018-21, starting about half the team’s games between center and left field. Altogether, Jones managed just a .219/.282/.389 (78 wRC+) mark in that time, albeit with intermittent flashes of enough power and defensive upside to keep the Detroit front office intrigued.

Across the board, advanced defensive metrics lauded Jones’ glovework between center and left field in 2018. The Tigers gambled he could play in center field full-time after that season, but the metrics all suggest he dropped off rather significantly in that regard between 2019-21. Jones has proved to be similarly inconsistent on the other side of the ball. Despite always-lofty strikeout rates, the right-handed hitter has occasionally shown enough thump to be a productive hitter. That was particularly true in 2020, when Jones hit .268/.333/.515 across 108 plate appearances before suffering a season-ending hand fracture.

For as strong as Jones began the 2020 season, he opened 2021 with an absolutely dismal start at the plate. He hit just .170/.210/.250 over 105 trips to the dish, leading the Tigers to demote him to Toledo. Things haven’t gotten much better with the Mud Hens, as Jones is off to a .205/.255/.364 start in the minors, where he’s struck out in 18 of his first 47 plate appearances.

The Tigers will now have a week to trade Jones or place him on outright waivers. Any team that claims Jones off waivers would assume the remaining portion of his $2.65M salary (approximately $1.7M). Given Jones’ immense struggles this season, it seems unlikely another club will put in a claim, but it’s at least possible the Tigers could agree to pay down some of that money in exchange for a prospect if a rival team has interest in acquiring Jones via a small trade.

The more probable outcome is that Jones will clear waivers and be sent outright to Toledo. As a player who has between three and five years of MLB service time, Jones technically has the right to refuse a minor league assignment and elect free agency. Doing so, however, would require forfeiting the remainder of his guaranteed salary, so Jones would almost certainly accept an outright assignment and look to play his way back to Detroit at some point this season.

Foley, a 25-year-old reliever, is now in line to make his major league debut. In their writeup of the Tigers farm system , Eric Longenhagen and Kevin Goldstein of FanGraphs note that Foley works in the 96-99 mph range with his fastball. Longenhagen and Goldstein call Foley a potential “foundational piece of the Tigers bullpen,” but they note that his relatively advanced age and injury history, including a 2018 Tommy John surgery, add some risk to the profile. Foley has thrown 10 innings of four-run ball with 10 strikeouts and four walks at Triple-A this season, his first crack at the minors’ highest level.

Tigers cut JaCoby Jones, call up rookie pitcher amid flurry of moves

The Detroit Tigers have designated outfielder JaCoby Jones for assignment, removing him from the 40-man roster.

The move was made so the Tigers could add right-handed pitcher Jason Foley to the 40-man roster and bring him to the big leagues.

Foley will replace right-handed pitcher Michael Fulmer, who was placed on the injured list due to ongoing arm fatigue that has left him unavailable to pitch since May 30.

Jones, 29, was one of the Tigers’ most productive offensive players during injury-shortened seasons in 2019 and 2020, but he struggled mightily in the first six weeks of 2021 and was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on May 23.

Jones was hitting just .170 with a .460 OPS in 105 plate appearances with the big-league club. He had just five walks and a whopping 42 strikeouts.

Jones has also struggled to get on track with the Mud Hens. He has 18 strikeouts in 47 plate appearances since his demotion with an OPS of just .619.

Jones is now in limbo for the next three to seven days. Although the Tigers could seek to trade him to another club, it’s more likely that his status will resolved through waivers. If Jones clears waivers, he can be outrighted back to Toledo, where he is currently assigned. If he’s claimed by another team, the new club will be responsible for the roughly $1.75 million that Jones is owed for the remainder of this season.

Foley, 25, was an undrafted free agent out of Sacred Heart University in Connecticut who missed the 2018 season after undergoing Tommy John and spent the 2019 season in Class A (advanced) Lakeland. But he got a late-season invite to the Tigers’ alternate training site in 2020 and then impressed new manager A.J. Hinch and his staff in spring training. He had a 3.60 ERA in 10 innings of work this year in Toledo, striking out 10 and walking four.

Foley was college teammates with infielder Zack Short, who the Tigers optioned back to Toledo on Saturday.

The Tigers placed Fulmer on the injured list retroactive to June 3 with what was described as a right shoulder strain.

Fulmer, 28, has emerged as one of the club’s top relievers in 2021, posting a 3.34 ERA in 35 innings of work, striking out 35 and walking 10.

Chicago – And just like that, JaCoby Jones is off the Tigers 40-man roster and quite possibly on his way out of the organization.

Jones, the Tigers injury-plagued starting center fielder the last three seasons, was designated for assignment Sunday morning to clear a roster spot for 25-year-old relief pitcher Jason Foley, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A Toledo.

If he clears waivers, Jones will be a free agent and can either sign back with the Tigers on a minor-league deal or seek another opportunity elsewhere.

Jones, after putting up career-best numbers last season (.268 batting average with a 129 OPS-plus), never found his footing this season. He was hitting .170 with 42 strikeouts in 105 plate appearances before being demoted to Triple-A on May 23.

Detroit Tigers: An ode to Jacoby Jones

By david rumptz | jun 8, 2021.

DETROIT, MI - JULY 03: JaCoby Jones #21 of the Detroit Tigers looks on during the Detroit Tigers Summer Workouts at Comerica Park on July 3, 2020 in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Mark Cunningham/MLB Photos via Getty Images)

The Detroit Tigers recently designated JaCoby Jones for assignment. We look back at his career in Detroit and the memories he provided to me as a fan.

In one of the final moves by David Dombrowski made as Detroit Tigers GM, on July 15, 2015, he traded Joakim Soria to the Pittsburgh Pirates for JaCoby Jones, who was playing the infield for the Altoona Curve.

Jones would split time in between two seasons of Arizona fall ball, Erie and Toledo. The day he hit the first home run of his Double-A career in Erie was a special one. He would go on to hit three home runs that day against the New Britain Rock Cats.

Another favorite memory of mine was he being mic’d up during a March spring training this year against the Phillies. Videos like this can be cheesy but this a great behind the scenes on a player before and during a game.

JaCoby Jones broke into the Major Leagues just as the Detroit Tigers competitive window was closing. He played 13 games in 2016 when the Tigers went 86-75, good for a second-place finish in the American League Central.

Since then, Jones and the Tigers have limped through five years together in a rollercoaster marriage. The team has gone just 222-380, good for a meager .369 winning percentage. Despite the team’s struggles, Jones has been a fan favorite over the years and it is sad to see him go. I am going to break down Jones’ time here in Detroit through the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Detroit Tigers cut JaCoby Jones, call up Jason Foley, send Michael Fulmer to injured list

jacoby jones designated for assignment

The Detroit Tigers made a quartet of roster moves before Sunday's game against the Chicago White Sox, including putting right-handed reliever Michael Fulmer on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain.

Losing Fulmer forced the Tigers to make additional decisions.

The organization called up righty reliever Jason Foley from Triple-A Toledo to take his place in the bullpen and make his MLB debut. To make room for Foley on the 40-man roster, outfielder JaCoby Jones — demoted to Triple-A earlier this season — was designated for assignment.

Foley, 25, is the Tigers' No. 27 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline . His fastball velocity sits in the upper-90s and has reached 101 mph. The Tigers signed Foley in August 2016 as an undrafted free agent from Sacred Heart University.

Foley pitched the sixth inning in Sunday's loss to the White Sox . He hit two batters, but didn't allow a hit or a walk to get out of the inning without allowing a run.

"He throws hard," Hinch said about Foley. "He seemingly can control the moment. He's going to be in awe facing some of the big names as he's climbed the ladder, but the stuff is real. When you see that impact and it opens some eyes, when the opportunity comes about, you want to see if you can catch something."

HAASE'S STORY:   Why the secret of Tigers catcher Eric Haase's success started in a barn in Westland

SKUBAL JOINS CLUB:   Rookie Tarik Skubal carved up White Sox. Here's what he needs to do next

In nine games for the Mud Hens this season, Foley logged a 3.60 ERA, four walks and 10 strikeouts in 10 innings. He finished the 2019 campaign with a 3.89 ERA, 17 walks and 43 strikeouts in 44 innings at the High-A level but did not pitch in 2020 because the COVID-19 pandemic nixed the minor leagues.

Foley previously underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the 2018 season.

"Once he got to Triple-A, he started to establish himself as a guy that was going to factor in at some point during the season," Hinch said. "Given where we're at and some of the right-handed bullpen that we want to utilize for the next couple series, he's earned the opportunity to get a look."

Fulmer, 28, has not pitched since May 30 because of what Hinch previously described as "fatigue."

The initial plan was to give him a break before using him in the four-game series with the White Sox from Thursday through Sunday. Before Saturday's contest, Fulmer reported that his throwing arm was uncomfortable and made himself unavailable to pitch.

"He has some inflammation, which a lot of pitchers do right now," Hinch said. "We're very cognizant of his injury history (knee surgery, Tommy John surgery) and also just the difficulty in the pandemic year to this year. We almost have to react this way to protect him, protect us and give him a blow. That's really what we view this as."

Fulmer will undergo tests once the team returns to Detroit on Sunday night.

"We're not expecting this to linger a long time," Hinch said. "But we have to be cautious given the way it kind of all went down from the beginning of the week to the end of the week. We need to run a full battery of tests to see exactly what it is that we're dealing with. We don't think it's structural, and we don't think it's something that's going to escalate."

[ Unexpected return to Detroit Tigers allows Bryan Garcia to display confidence ]

Before getting optioned to Triple-A Toledo on May 24 , Jones hit .170 with five walks and 42 strikeouts across 36 games in the majors. For the Mud Hens, he posted a .205 batting average, three walks and 18 strikeouts in 10 games.

If Jones, 29, clears waivers, he can remain with in Detroit's organization but will not occupy a spot on the 40-man roster. Essentially, the Tigers don't see Jones fitting into the future if he isn't producing, especially because younger players — such as Derek Hill and Daz Cameron — need opportunities.

"We are very deep in (the outfield)," Hinch said. "So, it's his roster spot that goes to Foley. Those are always difficult, certainly for somebody who has been in the organization and has contributed in the organization. It's been a difficult couple of weeks for him, but hopefully, he'll bounce back, play well and get back to the big leagues."

Also, the Tigers reinstated right-handed starter Jose Urena from the injured list so he could pitch Sunday in the series finale with the White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field. Urena allowed three runs over fine innings Sunday with one strikeout and two walks.

"I just want him to get through his outing healthy," Hinch said. "I want him to be good, and we expect him to go as long as he can, but I need both of those things. I need him healthy, and I need him good."

Turnbull in 'good spirits'

The Tigers placed right-handed starter Spencer Turnbull on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a right forearm strain . He was removed from Friday's 9-8 loss to the White Sox after the fourth inning. He only threw 56 pitches.

"I just saw him in the training room," Hinch said. "He's in good spirits. He's seen a handful of doctors here and talked to our team doctors back in Detroit. There's no structural damage. As we said, it's muscular in nature. He does have inflammation he's got to deal with, but we were very happy with the initial diagnosis.

"All signs are positive so far."

Detroit Tigers: JaCoby Jones’ time in the Motor City comes to an end

By tyler kotila | jun 9, 2021.

Peter Aiken-USA TODAY Sports

The Detroit Tigers have moved on from one of the veteran outfielder JaCoby Jones who was designated for assignment. After some early-season struggles, he was optioned to the minors and relegated to the Toledo Mud Hens but now the team has opted to move on entirely.

The Detroit Tigers organization has seemingly opted to move on from the young centerfielder who has not quite performed up to the standards that fans were likely hoping for. Jones has played his last game in a Tigers uniform and will likely be heading for open water and looking for a new team.

While he may be struggling, there have been times in his career that Jones has looked like he could be a minimal asset to a team. In this DFA move, Jones has to clear waivers. Teams will get the first crack at him at this point.

If Jones clears waivers then, he will be outrighted to Triple-A Toledo, and in this case, he has the right to refuse demotion and elect to become a free agent. Given his inconsistency and struggles, playing in Toledo might be best, but my guess is Jones will be looking to find a new home.

Detroit Tigers outfielder JaCoby Jones has played his last game for the organization.

There is always the chance that Jones takes his outright demotion and looks to play his way back to Detroit, but I do not see this happening.

The six-year veteran of the Tigers since being acquired in a trade from the Pittsburgh Pirates is going to want to play in the big leagues as soon as possible.

In Detroit, it seems like the youth movement is nearing, and A.J. Hinch is advocating for younger players to get their shot.

A guy like Daz Cameron is starting to look for appealing at the big league level than Jones was, which might be even more motivation for the DFA of Jones.

In 2021, Jones logged 36 games where he slashed .170/.210/.250, which is a far cry from his .268/.333/.515 in 30 games over the course of the 2020 season.

Jones was hot last year and never carried it over, it seemed like he had figured something out at the plate, but the inconsistency has struck once again. The Tigers outfield will be different without Jones, but the team is beginning the slow change into the crucial part of the team’s rebuild.

No longer seeing Jones patrol the outfield will suck. His defensive abilities were on the plus-side of things. He was able to make some spectacular grabs, but the Tigers are no longer in a position where keeping someone like Jones around is beneficial for them.

Best of luck to JaCoby Jones in his future endeavors, whether that is with the Mud Hens or another franchise which seems to be the likely option.

Tigers' JaCoby Jones: Reaches agreement with Tigers

Share video.

Jones and the Tigers avoided arbitration by reaching a one-year, $2.65 million deal Friday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports.

Jones missed the final month of the 2020 season after fracturing his hand, but his production significantly increased when he was on the field. Over 30 games, Jones had a career-best .848 OPS with five home runs and 14 RBI. He should be fully healthy heading into spring training.

Undrafted to the big leagues, Tigers make Jason Foley's dream come true

jacoby jones designated for assignment

Chicago — Really? More COVID forms to fill out?

Jason Foley, the hard-throwing right-handed reliever, shrugged and dragged himself into the Toledo Mud Hens clubhouse as he was asked to do Saturday afternoon, thinking to himself, when will these protocols ever end?

“Incredible moment,” Foley said. “When they told me they needed me to sign some COVID documents, I obviously believed it. But then they all just kind of started getting on me and stuff, giving me a hard time. Then eventually they broke the news.”

Foley, at age 25, after missing two of the last three seasons, was going to the big leagues. The Tigers purchased his contract from Triple-A Toledo on Sunday and there he was, in uniform, taking pictures at Guaranteed Rate Field before the game with his former college teammate Zack Short.

“Pretty emotional,” he said. “I worked my butt off to get here.”

Short was sent down to Toledo Saturday night, but manager AJ Hinch let him stay with the club to be part of Foley's big-league debut.

"AJ thankfully let him stay to watch my debut," said Foley, who hit two batters in his debut but pitched a scoreless inning. "That was super awesome. He was on the field with me taking pictures and soaking up the moment with me."

What a journey. Foley went undrafted, despite showing upper-90s velocity at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut.

“I’ve said this 100 times — this dude wasn’t drafted?” former West Michigan Whitecaps manager Mike Rabelo said during an interview with The News in 2020 . “Talking with amateur scouts, I’ve asked every one of them: How wasn’t he drafted?

“He’s had velo from the get-go: 97 to 99 every night, and at our place a couple of nights ago he hit 101.”

The Tigers signed him off the sandlots in Long Island during the summer of 2016. But his quick ascent was halted by Tommy John surgery, which cost him the 2018 season.

The pandemic cost him the 2020 season (he pitched at the Tigers’ alternate site) and then COVID-19 cost him three important weeks this spring .

“The Tommy John was the toughest (obstacle),” he said. “It was tough because I’d been throwing really well prior to it and had a lot of confidence and good momentum going forward.

“That was a major setback physically, for sure, and mentally as well knowing I wouldn’t be able to play for upwards of a year and miss a whole season.”

But he’s come all the way through that and emerged as more complete pitcher with a four-pitch arsenal.

“I’ve been throwing a lot of two-seamers, which has given me a whole new weapon to get outs,” he said. “I’ve developed a lot with the change-up and slider, too. Those have been great assets to help get guys out, as well, when they are sitting on a fastball. It’s been good.”

He’s had 10 strikeouts in 10 innings at Triple-A Toledo and over four minor league seasons, he’s carried a 9.3 strikeouts per nine and 3.2 walks per nine profile.

“He opened some eyes in spring training,” Hinch said. “He has a good arm, a moving fastball and right-handed hitters really don’t hit him hard at all. He can fill up the strike zone with 95-100 mph fastballs and he’s got a little slider.

“Once he got to Triple-A, he established himself as a guy who was going to factor in here at some point this season.”

With Michael Fulmer going on the injured list , and with the bullpen being taxed in recent games, the time was now. The Tigers designated outfielder JaCoby Jones for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Foley.

“This has always been the dream,” Foley said. “Whatever obstacles get put in front of you, you’ve got to go through them. It was a tough battle, but I never gave up. I just kept working hard and it’s paid off.”

He got the call in the sixth inning Sunday with the Tigers trailing 3-0.

"The adrenalin was super high," he said. "I was surprisingly calm through the whole game, but once that call came, definitely the nerves spiked and the adrenalin spiked a bunch."

It started a little wobbly when he hit a pair of Adams — Eaton and Engel — sandwiched around a fielder's choice ground out.

"Nerves played a factor there," he said. "Usually I'm not one to hit many batters. I like to attribute that to nerves. But hopefully I won't have any more of those down the road."

But he escaped the inning by getting Nick Madrigal to line out to right and the ever dangerous Tim Anderson to ground out on a 99-mph two-seamer.

"I am just happy to get out of it with a zero," he said. "At the end of the day, that's all that matters."

Foley isn’t only bringing a power arm to the Tigers bullpen. He’s also bringing a pretty solid mustache game. He looks like the reincarnation of late Tigers first baseman Dave Bergman — certainly ready to give Jake Rogers a run for best ‘stache in the room.

“Oh yeah,” Foley said. “That’s been a battle.”

Twins Designate Jay Jackson For Assignment

By Nick Deeds | May 19, 2024 at 10:07am CDT

The Twins have designated right-hander Jay Jackson for assignment, per a club announcement. Right-hander Caleb Boushley was recalled in the corresponding move.

Jackson, 36, signed a $1.5MM guarantee with the Twins back in February but has struggled badly across 17 appearances with the Twins this season. In 22 1/3 innings of work, Jackson has posted a 6.75 ERA with a 4.49 FIP despite a solid 24% strikeout rate and a decent 8.3% walk rate. Much of the damage against Jackson has come via the long ball, as the veteran has already allowed a whopping four homers this season. While an unbelievably low 47.2% strand rate in conjunction with those solid strikeout and walk rates suggest Jackson may have been a victim of some bad luck (as demonstrated by his 3.49 SIERA and 3.74 xERA), those early season struggles were nonetheless enough for the Twins to make a change.

The 36-year-old’s professional career began all the way back in 2008, when he was a ninth-round pick by the Cubs. Jackson eventually made his big league debut as a member of the Padres but pitched just 34 2/3 innings in the majors between his 2015 debut and the 2021 season, instead having spent the majority of his career to that point pitching in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball. He posted excellent results during his time overseas with a 2.16 ERA and a 27.4% strikeout rate, and made his way back to the big leagues in 2021 as a member of the Giants. Jackson managed just 52 2/3 innings of work at the big league level from 2021-23, but posted solid results when on the mound with a 2.73 ERA and 4.07 FIP in 50 appearances.

Those strong previous results in conjunction with his solid peripherals in Minnesota could make Jackson and interesting target for teams in need of relief pitching, though it’s possible no team will want to assume the remainder of his contract with the Twins by claiming him off waivers. Should Jackson clear waivers, he’d have the right to reject an outright assignment and elect free agency, although he would forfeit his guaranteed salary in doing so.

Replacing Jackson on the Twins’ active roster is Caleb Boushley, who will be returning to the majors after a single-game cup of coffee with the Brewers last season. Boushley’s lone MLB appearance went fairly well as he posted a 3.86 ERA while striking out five 2 1/3 innings of work, although he did surrender two walks and a home run during the outing. Boushley found himself outrighted off the 40-man roster in Milwaukee this past offseason and elected free agency before signing with the Twins on a minor league deal back in January. Boushley’s contract was selected by the Twins earlier this month, although he did not make it into an MLB game before being optioned back to the minors. The right-hander has pitched to a decent 4.54 ERA in eight starts at the Triple-A level and figures to offer the Twins a long relief option out of the bullpen going forward.

To call the Twins streaky this year would be an understatement. Not sure why the Twins gambled on Jackson to begin with, but I don’t think any fans are going to be disappointed he’s DFA’d.

' src=

Twitter reports had him cleaning out his locker after giving up 4 (3 earned) to the Guardians. Thing is, that was on one walk, 4 singles (including an infield one), and an error. Given his advanced metrics I think there’s a very good chance he gets picked up by a rebuilding team like the Marlins or A’s. The Twins can’t wait for luck to turn around, they’re falling further behind in the Central every game.

' src=

He’s got good K numbers.

Another one of the Jackson 5 eliminated from MLB ranks (Jackson Frazier being the first).

Er, Holliday.

' src=

I’m stunned we cut bait this early in the season after showing a reluctance to part with guaranteed money, but it needed to happen!

' src=

Sort of pointless to cite a 3.86 ERA for only 2 1/3 innings of work. Just say that he gave up 1 ER.

' src=

Can someone text Atkins and let him know.

Saw the Twins game yesterday while he was getting shelled. Well-deserved release.
