Singapore's best tutor rates - how tuition rates are calculated.
Our private tutor matching service is free, and parents only need to pay monthly tuition charges for lessons that had been conducted.
Tutors in Singapore quote their own hourly rates.
In general, the rates are based on their years of private tutoring experience, their academic qualifications, and their abilities/confidence to help their students’ grades improve.
The tuition industry is very competitive and transparent.
Parents are aware that when their budget is below the market’s average rate, the better-qualified tutors are not likely to apply for the assignment.
The figures below are the typical range of rates quoted by experienced tutors with good track records.

Understanding College Costs
Resources to help you pay for college..
A common myth about college is that it’s too expensive. But once students understand what college really costs, they often discover that higher education is within their reach.
College Costs Vary
The biggest part of college costs is usually tuition. Tuition is the price you pay for classes. Along with tuition, you’ll probably have to pay some other fees to enroll in and attend a college. Tuition and fees vary from college to college.
Other college costs include room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses. Just like tuition, these costs vary from college to college. And students can find ways to save money on most of these expenses.
You can see that the cost of college depends a lot on the choices you make. There’s something else you should know: The published price of attending a college is not usually what students actually pay. They often pay less, thanks to financial aid.
Financial Aid Reduces Your Cost
Financial aid is money given or lent to you to help you pay for college. It may be awarded to you based on your financial need alone, or based partly on factors such as proven academic or athletic ability. Most full-time college students receive some form of financial aid.
The actual, final price (or “net price”) you’ll pay for a specific college is the difference between the published price (tuition and fees) to attend that college, minus any grants, scholarships, and education tax benefits for which you may be eligible.
The difference between the published price and the net price can be considerable. For example, in 2015-16, the average published price of in-state tuition and fees for public four-year colleges was about $9,410. But the average net price of in-state tuition and fees for public four-year colleges was only about $3,980.
So don’t let the prices published on college websites discourage you. The number you actually need to know is the estimated net price for you. How can you figure that out? Almost all colleges offer a net price calculator on their website. You can also use the College Board’s Net Price Calculator to estimate your net price at hundreds of colleges.
To find out more about the actual cost of college, read College Costs: FAQs.
How many college students get financial aid?
Millions of students receive financial aid each year. In 2021-22, undergraduate and graduate students received a total of $234.6 billion in student aid in the form of grants, Federal Work-Study, federal loans, and federal tax credits and deductions.
Can I afford to go to college?
Despite the news stories about rising college prices, a college education is more affordable than most people believe. Many colleges provide an excellent educational experience at a price you can manage. Public college prices are much lower than you might expect, and many private nonprofit colleges provide generous grants and scholarships to offset published costs.
Does applying for financial aid hurt my chances of being admitted?
You’re usually admitted based on your academic performance and the qualities you bring to the campus community. Colleges want to admit a diverse group of students and often use financial aid to achieve that goal. It’s crucial that you apply for financial aid early in the application process before all of a college’s funds are allocated.
Do I qualify for aid even if I don’t get straight A’s?
It's true that some scholarships are awarded based on academic performance. However, most financial aid is based on your family’s financial information provided on an aid application, typically the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) .
Are private colleges out of my reach?
Although the cost of college may be a crucial factor for you, focus instead on finding a college that’s a good fit ─ one that meets your academic, career, and personal needs.
You don’t have to rule out “expensive” schools. Keep in mind that private colleges usually offer generous financial aid to attract students from every income level. Plus, financial aid can come from different sources such as scholarships, grants, and loans. So think about net price (not published price), and don’t be afraid to apply to colleges you think you can’t afford.
Is my family’s income too high to qualify for aid?
Financial aid is intended to make a college education available to students from different financial backgrounds. Family income, the number of family members in college, medical expenses, and other factors may be considered when determining your financial aid eligibility. Even if you think your family income is too high for you to qualify for aid, fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid . This form determines your eligibility for federal and state student grants, work-study, and federal loans.
The best way to get an estimate of how much financial aid a college will offer you and therefore how much you’ll really pay to go to that college is to use the college’s net price calculator. Colleges provide these tools on their websites. Net price calculators give you an estimate of your net price for a particular college (i.e., the cost of attendance minus the gift aid you might get). Learn more about net price .
Should I consider working while I’m attending college?
Each student should consider their financial situation and the weight of their studies. Students who choose to work a moderate amount often do better academically. You may find that working a campus job related to your career goal is a good way to manage college costs, get experience, and engage with the university community.
Can I try to get my aid award revised?
Some colleges are willing to review your financial aid package if your financial situation changes. Consider discussing these changes with the financial aid office if your family has experienced an unexpected decrease in income or increase in expenses since you applied for financial aid.

Benefits of Tuition Assignments to improve grades
“I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times.” -Bruce Lee
We all know that practice is the ultimate ticket to hit the jackpot of victory because from time to time, everyone has repeatedly chanted “ practice makes perfect ” as their mantra to success. This is the reason why homework and assignments were created as they act as a form of practice for students to reinforce what they had learnt during class or tuition session.
For students who opt for online tuition or one-to-one private tuition, they are often given tuition assignments to complete before the next lesson. This is often looked upon as extra work which adds on to the list of school work that has to be done. However, students should not take this is as contributor to their stress ; instead, they should recognise its benefits.
Here are the benefits of tuition assignments to improve grades!
Benefit no.1: reinforcement.
The biggest advantage of tuition assignments is essentially reinforcement of the content that has been taught by the tutor. Tuition agencies in Singapore have free test papers uploaded for students and tuition teachers assign mock papers or pages from assessment books to give students the opportunity to strengthen the content in their mind.
Revisiting topics by doing some practice is an excellent way to ingrain important pieces of information in the mind. This is active learning which allows students to remember content much more effectively, as opposed to passive learning methods like reading. When the mind is actively involved in thinking process, it better encodes what it internalises.
Benefit N o.2: KNOW WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW
Ignorance is not a mistake, but being ignorant about your ignorance is dangerous. When students are told to do tuition assignments , they will discover their weaknesses and realise what they are lacking. This is the best way to improve as students can then ask the right questions to seek the best clarification from their tuition teachers.
This gives an opportunity for students to ask themselves some important questions. For example, students would be able to reflect on how they arrived at a conclusion, or why they may have developed a misconception. When identifying learning gaps, students would be able to flag them out. Tuition teachers and students can then work together to patch these learning gaps together.
Benefit No.3: DOUBTS
Having doubts and having questions arise in the mind is important. This is the only way that students can clarify concepts which seem unclear. In the process of learning, it is not possible to absorb everything (down to the nitty gritty details) in the first time of listening to a tutor explain a topic or when attending a lecture.
We only tend to internalise 25% of the information in the first round of learning something. Thus, there would definitely be lots of doubts buried down deep which has to be dug up the surface.
Benefit No.4: FAMILIARISATION
When students revisit topics or when they practice questions , they would be familiarising themselves with the pattern of questions being asked in examinations. It may seem as though questions are extremely challenging, and “out-of-the-box”, however, over time, when students view more and more practice papers, they would be able to catch a pattern.
Questions are often asked in fixed pattern and students need to figure out methods to answer them. Doing this alone is extremely challenging. However, with the expertise of a tuition teacher, this becomes easier.
Benefit No.5: SPEED AND ACCURACY
With more and more practice by doing tuition assignments, soon enough, students will eventually pick up on their speed in answering questions. We are well aware of the fact that time is the biggest enemy for students during examinations. Coupled with time restriction is also exam anxiety , which makes students more prone to making careless mistakes.
In order to answer with precision and speed, students need to practice beforehand by doing tuition assignments.
Benefit No.6: REVISION
We all something called the “ forgetting curve ” . This is essentially found by a German psychologist, Hermann Ebbinghaus, who wanted to understand more about the science behind why we forget.
His research had revealed that memories weaken over time. This means that if we learn something new, we would remember less and less of it as days and weeks go by, if we do not make the conscious effort to recall it. This is exactly why revision is of paramount importance, and what better way to do it then by doing tuition assignments as a form of revision?

How to increase my chance of being selected for the tuition assignment?
Tip 1: provide a descriptive write-up.
We seek to recommend the most suitable tutor based on a student's learning needs. As such, we require information about the tutor’s teaching methodology and experience to help us in the selection process. Only tutors with descriptive and well-articulated profiles will be considered for the tuition assignments. We request that you write in full sentences and avoid using text abbreviations, shortcuts, and bulleted points. Instead of simply stating a point, please support it by qualifying your experience and credentials. For instance, Tutor 1 wrote: “I can teach.”, while Tutor 2 wrote: “I have been teaching for 5 years. Most of my students have shown improvements in…” Tutor 2 will stand a better chance of getting shortlisted for the tuition assignment as they had provided details about their teaching experience—specifically their length of experience and how they have helped their students improve.
Tip 2: Ensure that All Relevant Documents are Submitted
Our education consultant will check through your certificates before recommending you to the parents. As we process many tutors’ applications each day, we are unable to notify tutors who do not provide complete documents. We strongly encourage tutors to submit all their documents before applying for a tuition assignment. Please note that submitting any doctored, fictitious, or false documents will result in an automatic blacklist.
Tip 3: Strive to Deliver Results
We constantly seek feedback from parents about a tutor’s performance and check in with parents about the progress of the students at the end of each year. Tutors who have helped students achieve significant improvements will be included in our Star Tutor database and receive more recommendations.
Tip 4: Quote an Attractive Rate
As a tuition agency, we have insights on the market rates for each tuition assignment based on the academic level and subject. Tutor fees quoted must be pegged to the market rate and commensurate with relevant experience. For example, if an ‘A’ level student and a full-time tutor both quote $50/hr for a tuition assignment, the full-time tutor has the better chance of getting shortlisted based on his or her experience.
Tip 5: Apply Quickly
Tuition assignments will close when a suitable tutor is found. We encourage tutors to apply as soon as the tuition assignments are posted. This is due to the quick turnaround time and competitive demand for tuition assignments, which gives rise to a short application window.
Tip 6: Don’t Give Up
We receive numerous applications for each tuition assignment. Due to the strong competition for tuition assignments, we understand that it can be frustrating to keep applying without any apparent success. But don’t give up! To boost your chances of being selected, please ensure that you have submitted the required documents, provided a descriptive writeup of your profile, and quoted a reasonable rate for remuneration. Who knows? You might get picked for the tuition assignment and even make it to our Star Tutor database!

Estimated Annual Cost of Attendance for First-Year Undergraduates
A printable PDF version of this page can be found here . This PDF also includes five years of trend data.
The table below shows the 2023-24 academic year estimated expenses for first-year undergraduate students at the University of Washington’s three campuses, which will be reviewed by the UW Board of Regents in June 2023. It reflects student fees and budgets for the regular academic year: fall, winter, and spring.
Note: the state’s allowable resident undergraduate tuition increase (under RCW 28B.15.067 ) for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year will be 3.0%. Assuming approval by the Board of Regents in June, the resident undergraduate tuition rate will be $11,869 . This is applicable only to resident undergraduate tuition; non-resident, graduate, and fee-based program rates will be confirmed in June 2024 and published to our Current Tuition and Fees Dashboards and Fee-Based Program pages. The other cost of attendance items below will be updated and published after final approval by the Board of Regents.
The Office of Student Financial Aid website has more information about student budgets , and other areas of the OPB website have more information on student fees and annual tuition .
* The annual student budgets for these items are based on the federal “cost of attendance” definition, which is used to determine financial aid eligibility: https://www.washington.edu/financialaid/getting-started/student-budgets/
** Student-led committees are responsible for all fees under this header, except NSEOF. For the NSEOF, student representatives provide support recommendations, which campus administrations weigh when developing proposals for Regental approval. Regents approve rate changes for all fees except U-PASS, which is governed by Regent-approved MOUs. Please note that many students pay fees beyond those presented here, such as course fees (which vary by discipline) and student insurance fees.

Seattle will begin charging its new rate in Spring 2024 to students entering in Spring 2024. Tacoma will begin charging its new rate in Fall 2023 to students entering in Winter 2024.
**** Tacoma’s U-PASS fee of $45/quarter was first charged in Spring 2019. For UW Tacoma students residing in Thurston County, the UPASS fee is $20/quarter, or $60 for the regular academic year.

Tuition, Fees and Expenses
Tuition & fees, other optional fees, student financial responsibility agreement, tuition adjustments and credit balances, health insurance, living expenses.
The following costs apply to undergraduates in the 2023-2024 school year:
Course Fees
Courses having additional charges are provided on the Course Schedule. In some cases the associated charges may be in lieu of Rice tuition and/or required fees.
The following charges are separate from the regular fees. Charges due to late registration or course changes made after the deadline are described in the Registration section.
Rates for Students Studying Abroad
Billing information.
Rice University uses an electronic billing system, commonly referred to as eBill. Each month, current term enrolled students will receive an email notification from [email protected], informing them of a newly published statement, along with instructions on how to view the statement within ESTHER .
Term payments are due in full based on the following schedule. Students may enroll in a deferred payment plan where the first installment is due on the following schedule:
Late Payments
Student accounts not paid in full (or whose payment plan is not current) by the billing due date will be subject to a 1.5% late fee. Late fees are calculated based on the amount past due. Students experiencing difficulty with paying their balance should contact the Cashier's Office promptly to discuss payment options.
Delinquent Accounts
Rice University reserves the right to block or cancel the registration of any student who fails to pay, when due, any indebtedness to the institution.
Academic credits, transcripts, and diplomas will be withheld until all financial obligations are paid in full.
Before enrollment for a new semester can occur, students must consent to a Student Financial Responsibility Agreement .
Tuition and Fee Reversals for Withdrawals and Drops
University withdrawals .
Students officially withdrawing from all courses are eligible for a 100% refund of tuition and fees through the deadlines listed on the Academic Calendar by semester.
Students officially withdrawing from all courses after the 100% reversal of tuition and fee deadline are eligible for a partial reversal of tuition. Fees are not reversed. Consult the Academic Calendar for specific tuition refund prorations based on the date of withdrawal.
Dropped Courses
Students dropping individual course(s) after the 100% tuition reversal period will not be eligible for a refund and will remain liable for payment of full tuition and fee charges though certain exceptions may apply, outlined in the Registration Drop/Add section. Non-attendance does not constitute an official course drop or withdrawal. All charges due to Rice University must be paid before refunds or adjustments will be permitted.
In cases of academic or disciplinary suspension, eligibility for tuition refunds and adjustments will depend on the conditions of the suspension and will be entirely at the option of the institution. Should circumstances beyond the reasonable control of Rice University result in curtailing classes, moving classes online, closing residence facilities, or otherwise withdrawing services that are a normal function of the institution, refunds of any nature will be at the discretion of university administration.
Financial Aid
In addition to the university's reversal schedule and in accordance with the Higher Education Amendments of 1992, if a student completely withdraws from the university and has utilized Federal Title IV funds (e.g. Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant [SEOG], Academic Competitiveness Grant, National SMART Grant, Federal Perkins Loan, Federal Direct Stafford Student Loan, Federal Direct PLUS, Federal Direct Graduate PLUS), during the semester in which they withdraw, the university will observe the federally mandated process in determining what, if any amount of money must be returned to the federal program(s).
The calculation of the return of funds may result in the student owing a balance to the university and/or the Department of Education.
Credit Balance Refunds
Student account credits resulting from excess Federal Financial Aid payments, scholarship payments, and loan payments are automatically refunded by the Cashier’s Office; however, there may be certain circumstances where credits on student accounts occur that may not be automatically refunded. Reversed charges, over payments, tuition waivers, and other varying factors may lead to a credit balance on a student account.
For those credits not automatically refunded, students may request disbursement of the credit balance through email to [email protected] .
Credit Balance Refund Delivery
Direct Deposit Funds are issued to students that are enrolled in Electronic Refunds . For students not enrolled in Electronic Refunds , refund checks are issued and mailed directly from JP Morgan Chase to the student mailing address on record.
All students, full-time or part-time—including those on away status—must have appropriate health insurance. For information about health insurance, visit Health, Counseling, Wellbeing, and Safety . For current premium rates for university-provided student health insurance, see the Student Health Insurance website.
Residence fees cover dining hall costs and residence maintenance. They are established each year as needs dictate. For 2023-24, the annual room and board charge for residence in a residential college is $15,900.
An electronic housing agreement must be signed in ESTHER no later than April 30 for students to receive residential room assignments. New students are required to submit a $100, non-refundable housing deposit no later than April 30, which will be applied to that semester’s room and board charges. For more information about housing, see Undergraduate Student Life .
College Dining provides 375 meals with the purchase of the meal plan per semester. All students living on campus must purchase meal plan option A. It is recommended that students living off campus also purchase a meal plan. More information is available at the Dining page .
Refunds for Housing and Meal Plans
Students who move out of their college may receive a prorated credit to their student account, equal to the difference between the payments received and the reduced room and board charges. A termination fee will be applied. Exceptions for academic suspension, Rice-sponsored study abroad, family emergencies, and other isolated incidents will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

The Pros and Cons of Tuition Assignments in Singapore
Tuition assignments in Singapore have become increasingly popular in recent years, as parents seek to supplement their children’s education with additional support from private tutors. While tuition assignments can be beneficial in some cases, there are also potential drawbacks that should be considered.
One of the main advantages of tuition assignments is that they can provide students with additional support and guidance in areas where they may be struggling. Private tutors can provide personalized instruction and feedback, which can help students to better understand difficult concepts and improve their academic performance.
Furthermore, tuition assignments can also help to build students’ confidence and motivation, as they are able to receive individual attention and support from a tutor.
Another benefit of tuition assignments is that they can be tailored to the individual needs of the student. Tutors can focus on specific topics or areas of difficulty, and can adjust their teaching methods to suit the student’s learning style. This can be particularly beneficial for students who may have difficulty understanding certain concepts or who may need extra help to keep up with their peers.
One of the potential drawbacks of tuition assignments is that they can be expensive. Private tutors typically charge an hourly rate, which can add up quickly if the student requires regular tuition sessions. Furthermore, tuition assignments may not be suitable for all students, as some may not be able to benefit from the additional support or may find the extra tuition sessions to be too demanding.
In addition, tuition assignments can also be time-consuming for both the student and the tutor. Tutors may need to spend extra time preparing for each session, and students may need to dedicate additional hours to their studies in order to keep up with their tutor’s expectations. This can be particularly challenging for students who already have a busy schedule.
Overall, tuition assignments can be beneficial for some students, but it is important to consider the potential drawbacks before committing to a tuition assignment. Parents should carefully evaluate their child’s needs and consider the cost and time involved before making a decision.

Home tuition is another popular type of tuition assignment in Singapore. This type of tuition involves a tutor travelling to the student’s home to provide tuition. Home tuition can be beneficial for students who are unable to attend physical tuition sessions due to distance or other commitments.
Specialized Tuition
Specialised tuition is a type of tuition assignment that is tailored to the student’s specific needs. This type of tuition can involve a tutor working with a student on a particular subject or skill, such as mathematics or English. Specialised tuition can be beneficial for students who need extra help with a particular subject or skill.
Tuition assignments are an important part of the education system in Singapore. There are a variety of tuition assignments available, ranging from one-on-one tutoring to group classes and specialised tuition. Depending on the student’s needs and preferences, there are a variety of tuition assignments available in Singapore.
The Impact of Tuition Assignments on Student Learning in Singapore
The impact of tuition assignments on student learning in Singapore has been a topic of debate for many years. While some argue that tuition assignments can be beneficial to student learning, others contend that they can be detrimental. This paper will examine the impact of tuition assignments on student learning in Singapore, with a focus on the advantages and disadvantages of tuition assignments.
The primary advantage of tuition assignments is that they can help students to develop their academic skills. Tuition assignments can provide students with the opportunity to practice and refine their knowledge and skills in a particular subject. This can help to improve their understanding of the subject and their ability to apply it in real-world situations. Furthermore, tuition assignments can also help to motivate students to work harder and to strive for better grades.
On the other hand, there are also some potential drawbacks to tuition assignments. For example, tuition assignments can be time-consuming and can take away from time that could be spent on other activities. Additionally, tuition assignments can be expensive, and this can be a burden for families with limited financial resources. Furthermore, tuition assignments can also be stressful for students, as they may feel pressure to perform well in order to receive good grades.
In conclusion, tuition assignments can have both positive and negative impacts on student learning in Singapore. While tuition assignments can help to improve academic skills and motivate students to work harder, they can also be time-consuming, expensive, and stressful. Therefore, it is important for parents and educators to consider the potential benefits and drawbacks of tuition assignments before making a decision about whether or not to use them.
How to Maximize the Benefits of Tuition Assignments in Singapore
Tuition assignments in Singapore are a great way for students to gain additional knowledge and skills, as well as to supplement their income. However, in order to maximize the benefits of tuition assignments, there are certain steps that must be taken. This article will discuss how to maximize the benefits of tuition assignments in Singapore.
First, it is important to understand the different types of tuition assignments available. There are two main types of tuition assignments in Singapore: private tuition and group tuition. Private tuition is typically one-on-one instruction, while group tuition involves teaching a group of students. Depending on the student’s needs and preferences, either type of tuition assignment can be beneficial.
Second, it is important to research the tuition assignment thoroughly. This includes researching the student’s academic background, the tuition assignment’s requirements, and the tutor’s qualifications. It is also important to consider the student’s learning style and the tutor’s teaching style to ensure that the tuition assignment is a good fit.
Third, it is important to create a lesson plan that is tailored to the student’s needs. This includes selecting appropriate materials, setting realistic goals, and providing feedback. It is also important to ensure that the lesson plan is flexible enough to accommodate any changes in the student’s needs or interests.
Fourth, it is important to establish a good relationship with the student. This includes being punctual, professional, and patient. It is also important to be open to feedback and to be willing to adjust the lesson plan as needed.
Finally, it is important to keep track of the student’s progress. This includes providing regular feedback and assessing the student’s progress. It is also important to provide the student with resources and support to help them succeed.
By following these steps, tutors can maximize the benefits of tuition assignments in Singapore. By understanding the different types of tuition assignments available, researching the tuition assignment thoroughly, creating a tailored lesson plan, establishing a good relationship with the student, and tracking the student’s progress, tutors can ensure that the tuition assignment is a success.

A FAFSA Fiasco Has Students Still Asking: Which College Can They Afford?
The new application for federal tuition aid was meant to be simpler. High school seniors say it has been anything but, and some are still unsure of their plans after graduation.
By Colbi Edmonds and Bernard Mokam
Colbi Edmonds and Bernard Mokam interviewed dozens of students, counselors and experts for this article.
By this time of year, college-bound high school seniors are usually celebrating their choices, researching dorms and even thinking of their majors. This year, that’s not necessarily the case.
Because of a disastrous rollout of the new application for federal tuition aid, many still don’t know how much tuition they would be paying and so have not decided where they can afford to go.
The Education Department’s redesigned form for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA, was supposed to make applying for tuition aid easier and more accessible. But faced with a bureaucratic mess caused by technical meltdowns and severe delays in processing information and receiving aid packages, students say the new system has been anything but clear or streamlined.
The first signs of trouble began in December with the form’s release and have cascaded since, creating uncertainties for students — with graduation right around the corner.
“It’s been a nightmare from point A to point B,” said Reyna Atkinson, a 17-year-old from Michigan, who ultimately committed to Michigan State University after months of waiting.
FAFSA is a free, standardized application for federal aid for college tuition that millions rely on. Students fill out one form, with details on their background and household income, to request tuition information for the schools they list.
Before the overhaul, applicants typically received their financial aid packages within 72 hours of submission. But this year, the Education Department has to reprocess more than half a million applications , and students have been waiting for two, three months — and counting.
Students typically must commit to a college by May 1. Some colleges have extended their decision days until May 15 or early June because of the FAFSA problems.
Even so, several students interviewed by The New York Times said they were making decisions without getting a full picture of tuition costs, a move financial aid experts discourage. Others said they couldn’t commit without knowing how much their chosen college would cost.
Kenneth Seinshin, a 17-year-old from New York City who hopes to be the first in his family to go to college, started filling out his application the first week it came out. But it took months to troubleshoot the glitches he encountered; he finally submitted in March.
So far, he has received only one aid package, for Union College in New York, and he has yet to make a decision. “The whole process just really stressed me out,” Kenneth said.
Clover Schwalm, an 18-year-old from Michigan, was in a similar situation. As a disabled and transgender student, she wanted a school with an accessible and inclusive environment. She still hasn’t received all of her packages, including from schools of higher priority like Savannah College of Art and Design, but committed to Arizona State.
She said she has “reservations” about moving to Arizona, but was comforted by the fact that it doesn’t have a ban on transgender care for adults. “It’s not the best, but I also recognize that there are states that could be less safe,” she said.
Simply completing the application has been a frustrating task for many. Some have not been able to save their changes or make corrections, while others could not submit their form at all.
So far this year, there has been a noticeable dip in the number of students who have completed the form, compared with last year. Among high schoolers graduating this year, 35.6 percent had completed financial aid applications through April 26, compared with 48.2 percent in the same period for the previous class, data analysis by the National College Attainment Network shows.
“The data on FAFSA completion takes a bad story and makes it even worse,” said Bill DeBaun, a senior director at NCAN, which tracks FAFSA applications.
Reyna, the Michigan student, submitted her FAFSA form in January, but it wasn’t processed until late March. She was accepted to several schools, but the FAFSA system wouldn’t let her add them to her application, so she gave up on trying to get financial aid from them.
Ava James, 17, from California, faced different, but still frustrating, hurdles. When she tried to add her mother’s first name, Janice Cheryl, the system could not process the double name. She eventually figured it out, but then the system prematurely submitted the form without her signature. It took her six weeks to fix it.
Another wrinkle has been the form’s convoluted language.
Vanessa Farris, a counselor for the Ayers Foundation Trust in McMinnville, Tenn., said several of her students tripped over one particular question:
“Are the student’s parents unwilling to provide their information, but the student doesn’t have an unusual circumstance, such as those listed in question 7, that prevents them from contacting the parents or obtaining their information?”
“Such a little thing, but it has a cost,” Ms. Farris said. Several students provided wrong answers, and they were not able to amend their mistake for months.
The debacle affects some more than others. Agnes Cesare, a college counselor at U.C.L.A. Community School, said she was worried about its effects on students from low-income families or racial minority groups — the ones the new form was meant to help.
Ms. Cesare said that because of the arduous process, some students at her school had decided to pursue an associate degree and save up for a bachelor’s later. But she worries that once they are out of high school, they may not get the help they need to transfer to a four-year school.
“It feels like the roadblocks are insurmountable” for those students, Ms. Cesare said.
The process has been especially difficult for students with undocumented parents. The new system asks parents for their Social Security numbers, which undocumented people don’t have.
That was the case for Elizabeth Templos-Galindo, a 17-year-old in Tennessee, and her parents. They called the Education Department for assistance but were put on hold for five hours before learning of other forms of identification her parents could submit.
Education Department officials have acknowledged the glitches, and on a recent call with reporters, the deputy secretary of education, Cindy Marten, said they had been “working tirelessly to resolve those issues.” Officials added that students were now able to make corrections to their forms and that updated financial records were being sent to schools. Last month, the department announced that the leader of the Federal Student Aid office, Richard Cordray, would step down.
While FAFSA is used by every school in the country, a small group of institutions — a lot of them private and elite schools with a larger endowment and more students from wealthier backgrounds — also uses the College Scholarship Service Profile, a financial aid application administered by the College Board.
The CSS profile costs $25 per application, and schools that use it provide aid estimates using a different formula. Because that form didn’t have a bevy of glitches, students received estimates more quickly from CSS-affiliated schools than ones that use FAFSA.
Owen Keller, 18, from Maine, can speak to that. He filled out both FAFSA and CSS forms in December, and received tuition details from CSS-affiliated schools like Bowdoin College well before his first FAFSA package arrived in late April. Owen decided on Bowdoin even before receiving all of his packages.
The FAFSA blunder has made some reconsider their plans.
Yajaira Vargas, 18, from Reno, Nev., wants to study political science and become an immigration lawyer. She got into her top choice, the University of Nevada, Reno, but wasn’t able to apply for aid until May.
Now, she is considering not going to college immediately and taking a gap year. “But I don’t want to do that,” she said.
Universities are also feeling the stress of the FAFSA disaster, said Christopher Murr, assistant vice president for financial aid and scholarships at Texas State University.
“I know the U.S. Department of Education is doing their best at this point,” Dr. Murr said, “but it seems every couple of days there’s a new wrinkle, a new challenge that we have to adapt to.”
Experts are worried things may get worse this summer, when this debacle could collide with the “summer melt”: a period when students who took all the necessary steps to go to college, including putting down a deposit, decide not to enroll by fall semester.
Because of that, Mr. DeBaun said June 30 was seen as a crucial milestone, when the school year ends and high school students will no longer get access to counseling.
“Will we be able to connect students with the assistance they need to finish the process out?” he asked.
Alan Blinder contributed reporting.

How long does it take for a college degree to pay off? For many, it's 5 years or less.
By Aimee Picchi
Edited By Anne Marie Lee
May 9, 2024 / 11:00 AM EDT / CBS News
One of the major questions facing families today is whether a college degree is worth the expense, given rising tuition and fees that can saddle graduates with tens of thousands in student loan debt. Today, a majority of Americans don't think the cost can be justified.
But a new analysis finds that most post-secondary degrees provide a payoff within less than five years after graduation for low- and moderate-income students, although that time frame can largely depend on the type of school and program that a student chooses. The analysis, from the HEA Group and the educational nonprofit College Futures Foundation, focuses on graduates in California, the state with the largest number of enrolled college students.
The study examined families earning $75,000 or less given that these students may be more likely to skip higher education due to fears that pursuing a post-secondary degree may not pay off, even though a college degree could help them get an economic foothold. For this group of students, almost 4 of 5 California colleges and other higher education institutions provide a return on investment within five years, the research found.
"The No. 1 deterrent for a student not to pursue a college degree is affordability — they simply think they can't afford the cost of a higher education," HEA Group founder Michael Itzkowitz told CBS MoneyWatch.
But the study found that many low- and middle-income students are getting "an affordable education that allows for enough of an earnings premium that they can pay down their college education very quickly," he added.
The schools with the best return on investment for low- and middle-income students include many of California's state colleges, which tend to be lower-priced than nonprofit private universities, he noted. Itzkowitz said he believes the findings have applicability across the U.S. because students across the nation likewise have access to state colleges and universities that offer lower-cost degree programs compared with private institutions.
The findings echo recent a recent analysis of 1,500 colleges by Bloomberg News, which found that Ivy League universities like Yale and Harvard provide the best return on investment due to high salaries earned by their grads. But students who don't gain acceptance to one the Ivies are often better off attending state colleges, rather than high-priced private institutions, given that public institutions' lower cost of attendance result in a better return on investment.
Even though many students incur debt when pursuing a college degree, graduates are typically rewarded in the workplace with higher earnings, a benefit that accrues across their career. Despite Americans' increasing skepticism about the value of college, the typical college grad now earns about $60,000 annually, compared with $36,000 for people with only high school degrees, according to data from the New York Federal Reserve Bank.
Over a lifetime, that college wage premium can translate into a huge financial advantage. For instance, baby boomers with bachelor's degrees have median retirement savings of almost $600,000, but those with only a high school diploma have only about $75,000 socked away, a recent study found .
Colleges offering the biggest payoff
To examine a school's return on investment, the analysis looked at data from the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard to examine the earnings premium for 731,000 low- and moderate income graduates in California.
The analysis then looked at the net cost that students pay to complete a degree, which is tuition and other fees minus scholarships and grants, times the number of years required to earn a degree. Comparing the earnings premium that college grads receive versus their net cost of getting their degree indicates how long it takes to get a return on investment.
For instance, the study found the net cost of earning a bachelor's degree at California State University, San Bernardino, stands at about $5,373. But graduates of that university earn about $28,000 more per year than people with only a high school degree. As a result, CSU San Bernardino grads are able to earn a return on their investment after just a few months of graduating — giving it the second-best return on investment among all California schools.
The pricier Stanford University offers the best return on investment, with low- and moderate-income students basically able to recoup their costs as soon as they graduate. That's due partly to the wage premium given to Stanford grads, who typically earn about $74,000 more annually than people with only high school degrees.
But Stanford, like other top-rated colleges, accepts a smaller share of low- and moderate-income students compared with state schools, the study found.
"There are many state schools that are often the best option for students to consider," Itzkowitz said. "They oftentimes include in-state tuition, which is much less expensive than out-of-state tuition, and they can offer generous scholarships and provide strong economic opportunities."
Schools with red flags
The analysis also found some red flags, with about 20% of higher education programs providing no ROI. Basically, graduates will never earn enough to offset the cost of attendance, because their earnings are likely to remain lower than those of high school graduates.
These tend to be for-profit schools that offer certificate programs in industries such as cosmetology, the study found.
Because of these pitfalls, students should research schools and colleges to learn about typical graduates' economic outcomes before committing to a program, Itzkowitz noted.
"It's critical that students are more discerning than ever, because it's one of the most important decision you'll ever make," he noted.

U of M mulling highest tuition bump since 2010 for in-state students
The University of Minnesota may raise the cost of earning a college degree.
Interim President Jeff Ettinger’s budget for the next fiscal year proposes to slap a 4.5 percent tuition hike on in-state undergraduate students studying at the Twin Cities campus. If approved by the Board of Regents, that would be the highest annual tuition increase for Minnesota residents since 2010.
Students at other campuses would also pay more money.
“Tuition increases always suck,” said Blake Barrington, a freshman. “I think sometimes the fault is on the university for spending it needlessly. There’s a lot of clubs and activities that the university funds that I don’t think are necessarily needed."

At least two members of the Board of Regents seem reluctant to embrace the proposed increase.
“I only learned that we were considering a tuition increase this weekend,” wrote Robyn Gulley, who represents the Second Congressional District, in an email to MPR News. “I have not been convinced that increasing tuition for our students — compelling many to take additional loans or work longer hours to make tuition payments — will benefit our whole university more than it will harm our students. I expect to vote no on this proposed tuition increase.”
James Farnsworth, a regent representing St. Paul, hadn’t heard about the proposed tuition hikes until he read about in the newspaper on Friday.
“In general, I’m not supportive of putting our budgetary pressures on the backs of our students right now,” he wrote in an email. “But [I] haven’t digested the proposal enough to be knowledgeable comment on it.”
In real terms, the total increase in tuition, room and board and fees for Minnesota residents would raise costs by an additional $453 to $1,552 per year, depending on the campus. For Twin Cities undergrads who reside in-state, tuition could increase by 4.5 percent to $15,148.
The U has consistently raised tuition across campuses, but in recent years has not exceeded annual hikes of 2-3 percent for locals. Proposed residential raises at other U campuses range from 1.5 to 4.5 percent and are anticipated to bring in $42.2 million in revenue.
“A large part of coming from in-state and going to the U is the fact that the tuition is a lot more affordable,” said freshman Adella Mulawarman. “I’m curious to see if they go ahead and increase it if there will be a difference in how many in-state students decide to attend here.”
Thanks to scholarships, Mulawarman got a break on tuition this year. But those scholarships are drying up and next year she’s worried about having to take out loans.
Tuition hikes could be incoming for out-of-state students, too, where the track record for an increasing price tag has been steeper. At the Twin Cities campus, non-resident undergraduates could face a 5.5 percent tuition increase, bringing tuition to $36,296. A decade ago, tuition was just over $19,000 for non-residents.
In a Star Tribune Op-Ed last month, regents Janie S. Mayeron, Douglas A. Huebsch and Kenyanya urged state legislators to approve the U’s funding request to help cover the cost for students and employee pay.
“As a nonprofit public university, our recurring operating fund request will minimize tuition increases for students and families, who should not shoulder the burden of the state’s diminishing support,” they wrote. “It will also help provide our 27,000 faculty and staff members systemwide with fair compensation and the facilities they need to remain competitive in the workforce. They all deserve support by state leaders.”
Students who choose U housing may also have to anticipate higher room and board costs at all campuses. That change is “primarily driven by inflationary cost pressures,” according to the proposal.
At the Duluth campus, standard room and board costs could go up by 8.9 percent, bringing the typical total to $10,456 per year. In the Twin Cities, that’s a 6.5 percent increase, bringing room and board totals up to $13,606.
A 6 percent increase is proposed at Morris, 5.2 percent at Rochester and 2.8 percent at Crookston.
The attendance cost hikes are paired with proposed expense reductions of $13.7 million. The bulk of that reduction is planned through eliminating positions after employees leave and hiring replacement employees at lower salaries.
Additional expense reductions are proposed through scaling back in-person events and conferences, reducing certain research and educational programs and shrinking food and supply budgets in some departments.
The public is welcome to comment on the proposal at the U Regents meeting Friday , or online through the morning of June 7 . The 12-member Board of Regents are expected to vote on the final budget in June.

OPTIMIUM WAYS TO STUDY PRODUCTIVELY, TO SCORE THE HIGHEST MARKS
Exam preparation is an intimidating task for many Singapore students, especially when they have multiple subjects and lots of complicated content to understand.
Every important exam has at least one sophisticated question that causes students to lose precious marks.
The biggest challenge for students of all academic abilities and ages is to be able to apply the concepts they had memorized from their textbooks when faced with exams and assessments that always have unfamiliar contexts and tricky questions.
A structured approach to studying is required to ensure that one is well-prepared for exams.
While some students can study independently, others may require the assistance of a teacher for home tuition in Singapore, to help them reach their academic goals.
The Great Knowledge Keepers is the #1 agency for private tuition in Singapore.
We provide qualified and highly experienced tutors who have proven, strong track records of helping their students score higher grades.
You will receive profiles of excellent tutors within 12 hours (often, within 6 hours) of contacting us.
Hiring one of our private tutors is the proven and safest way to ensure you are correctly prepared for your exams.
Making a practical study schedule is the first step toward systematic exam preparation. This schedule should take into account the number of days available before the exam as well as the subjects that must be covered.
It is critical to stick to the study schedule and to regularly revise the key and supplementary topics.
The tuition teacher might also need time to undo the bad habits and content misconceptions that the student had picked up over the past few months/years that have been causing the student to now have low grades.
To avoid burnout, the study schedule should be flexible and allow for breaks.
It is possible to have such breaks only when the preparation starts early in the academic year.
When the student is given sufficient time to build a firm background in the basics, the student will experience success.
Otherwise, intensive preparation will be immediately necessary if one starts tuition when exams are just around the corner.
Calm and steady is definitely better than cramming.
For example, if you are taking the school’s final term exams or the important national exams (PSLE, GCE O Level, GCE A Level) exams, we would suggest hiring a tutor about six to 12 months before the start of exams, rather than one or two months before the exam.
This allows time for the areas of need to be identified, the skills to be developed, and exam techniques to be honed.
Taking notes and reading during lessons at school and during home tuition in Singapore can help to boost retention and understanding. To make it easier to revise, keep your notes organized and categorize them by topic.
Tutors from The Great Knowledge Keepers provide appropriate notes and quizzes so that their students can methodically manage the content that the MOE expects them to master when preparing for exams.
Our teachers for home tuition in Singapore are able to help their students enhance content mastery in the subjects they need tuition in.
They have proven track records in successfully teaching our students how to approach various types of exam questions and how to structure answers to get the highest possible score.
Our private tutors teach important and useful exam skills and answering techniques to their students, so that they can start to outperform their classmates and peers.
Practicing past exam papers can assist in identifying weak areas and provide the student with a better understanding of the exam requirements, what mistakes they are making/need to avoid, and the MOE’s marking schemes (how you need to answer the questions, in order to score an A or a B).
Because experienced teachers for home tuition in Singapore from The Great Knowledge Keepers had scored A’s in their own exams in the subjects they are now teaching, they have exceptional skills in guiding their students on the optimum ways to answer exam questions.
So why wait? Contact The Great Knowledge Keepers Singapore today to hire our exceptional teachers for home tuition in Singapore. Get reasonable home tuition rates from Singapore's #1 tuition agency!

private tuition vs tuition centre group lessons
We provide only 1 to 1 home tuition teachers who are experienced and who have proven track records of guiding their students to achieve higher grades.
They have the correct qualifications to teach their students.
The Great Knowledge Keepers provides tuition teachers to most of Singapore’s tuition centres.
We are therefore aware that in order to save costs as well as to fill urgent vacancies because of the very high tutor turnover rates, some tuition centres that we do not work with have ingrained practices like hiring inexperienced polytechnic or students from low-tier universities who might have scored only B’s in the subjects they are giving tuition in, and who did not major in the subject they are tutoring in.
Parents and students tell us that even if these tuition centres had created their own curriculum and content for their tutors to deliver, these inexperienced/less-qualified tutors are often not able to correctly help their students answer questions created by MOE school teachers.
Despite these improper practices, these tuition centres still charge high rates for group classes of 6 to 15 students.
The Great Knowledge Keepers is rated highly by parents and students because 93% of our students have experienced increases of 1 to 4 grades within 2 months of lessons with our qualified private home tutors.

What Our Happy Tuition Students And Clients Say The Great Knowledge Keepers - Always Knowledgeable
The first few months of the International Baccalaureate program were very difficult for me because I was more used to the MOE syllabus and exam requirements. We hired 2 tutors who specialize in teaching IB subjects from The Great Knowledge Keepers Singapore. I worked together with the tutor so well that we hired 1 more, for Math. Because of the tutors, I adjusted better to IB, and am now feeling a lot more comfortable and confident because my grades are better.

Louis Poh Student Attending St Joseph’s Institution IB Programme
My Physics grades in Sec 3, Sec 4 and O Levels were A’s. The content got more complicated once I entered JC, and around the middle of JC 1, I had a long nightmare that I failed Physics for my A Levels. I got even more anxious after that, and the stress was terrible. The Great Knowledge Keepers showed me profiles of some excellent and experienced Physics tutors. I chose Ms Lim because she has a Ph.D. in Physics from NTU and has been a tutor for 12 years.
Ms Lim is outstanding. Whenever I felt discouraged because I could not answer the questions that my classmates could, she would teach me methods where I dissected the question. Time management is also important and she taught me how to answer correctly within the time limit
Elissa Chan Singapore Tuition Student Attending Victoria Junior College
Elissa Chan Student Attending Victoria Junior College
I was very lazy in Primary 5 and Primary 6, so my PSLE grades were not very good. I don’t want to make the same mistake of being overconfident and lazy again in secondary school. I want to get into the same junior college as the one that my best friends from primary school are aiming for. I really miss them because they managed to get into a good secondary school. My parents hired tutors for Biology, Chemistry, Geography and Literature from The Great Knowledge Keepers.
They taught me valuable study skills and exam techniques. My grades have not gone below B so far, and I want to keep working hard until I get A’s, to make sure that I do well in my O Levels.

Be alert to tuition fees fraud: UCL only accepts payment by Flywire
We have had reports of students receiving scam phone calls where the caller knows their personal details. They then try to convince the student to send their fees via bank transfer rather than Flywire. UCL only accepts tuition fee payments via Flywire - do not transfer any money to anyone asking you to pay your fees by bank transfer, and report the call to the university.
