Essay On My Classroom – 10 Lines, Short and Long Essay For Class 1, 2 and 3 Kids

Priyadarshika

Key Points To Note: Essay On ‘My Classroom’ For Lower Primary Classes

10 lines on ‘my classroom’ for kids, a paragraph on ‘my classroom’ for children, essay on ‘my classroom’ in 200 words for kids, long essay on ‘my classroom’ in english for kids, what will your child learn from this essay.

A classroom is a space with which everyone can relate. It is a place for kids to learn, explore, and meet new friends. It is the first place where the kid goes and becomes social. Writing an essay on my classroom in English will allow kids to explore their inner emotional connections with their classroom. It will also enhance their observational skills, allowing them to see and scrutinise the details of the space where they spend the most creative time of the day. It will be a fun writing activity and a learning one too.

All kids know about their classroom, but when it comes to writing a description of a classroom, the real challenges surface—given below is a template that will end your doubts regarding how to write an essay on this topic:

  • The essay should have a proper introduction that talks about the physical dimensions of a classroom.
  • Later, you can explain its relevance and emotional significance in a kid’s life.
  • Kids should explain what they think of a classroom.
  • The conclusion should summarise the whole write-up.

Writing about any topic needs a clear understanding of the same. Kids in small classes might find it difficult to write in long sentences. Therefore, teachers and parents ask them to craft short sentences. Here are a few lines for an essay on my classroom for classes 1 & 2.

  • I saw my classroom for the first time when I went to kindergarten school.
  • It is a space designed for kids as old as me to learn together.
  • My classroom has many tables and chairs for all students to sit and study together.
  • My class has one big blackboard and one big whiteboard, which the teacher uses to explain a concept or draw something for us.
  • Our class also has an activity board, which all the students decorate turn-wise.
  • My classroom is well-ventilated as has two big windows.
  • My classroom also has beautiful yellow colour on the walls and white ceilings.
  • There is an open almirah in my class, where kids keep all the essentials like water bottles, bags, etc.
  • There are two dustbins in my class to throw waste.
  • There is a cupboard near the teacher’s table where our teacher keeps things necessary to conduct a lesson, like chalk, dusters, napkins, etc.

Many kids understand a topic but get puzzled when it comes to writing. Therefore, teachers first give a small paragraph to write on an easy subject like ‘my classroom’. Writing a short paragraph allows kids to explore their inner thoughts on the subject:

Everyone loves their school and classroom, and I am no exception. There are many reasons why I adore my classroom; one of them is that it is very spacious and big. It has 15 desks, one big almirah for keeping kids’ essentials, and two boards – a whiteboard and a blackboard. It also has a projector, which our teacher uses to show us stories and movies. My classroom has two windows facing the playground. I love seeing outside during a free period; it makes me feel relaxed. We also have a craft board where every kid needs to add something from their imagination.

As kids progress in class, they need to write progressive and longer sentences on various topics. Topics like my classroom challenge kids’ creative thinking and boost their sentence construction ability:

My classroom is one such space where I spend maximum time learning and exploring new topics and concepts. It is where 30 students like me from different walks of life sit together and learn together. My classroom is hi-tech and equipped to tackle any emergency with a fire alarm, fire extinguisher, etc. We also have a projector and whiteboard as our teacher explains most concepts with videos and graphics. Besides having a big shelf for kids’ essentials, my classroom has a small section with many books we can read during our free period. I can only take some books home after my teacher’s permission for a day or two. The best part about my classroom is it has lively interiors that can attract anyone. One can see different types of charts, quotations of notable personalities, and drawings done by students like me on my classroom walls, making it more attractive. We don’t have ceiling fans in our classroom as we have a centralised AC in the entire school. My classroom is impressive in every sense, as it showcases a part of me in every corner.

An essay on my classroom is a good way to promote critical thinking and observational skills via writing. Below is an essay for class 3 on essay my classroom for your reference.

Writing on the topic of my classroom is like writing about the most special space of your school. This is the place where learning and exploration go hand in hand and add a new dimension to our life. Here, we make many memories that stay with us even after school. My classroom is a very advanced, well-planned room that can accommodate around 30 students comfortably. My classroom has a unique feature: a soft board under every child’s name. All students get a chance to decorate that board weekly, and to do that, we need to come up with fresh ideas every week. The best idea gets a small prize and appreciation from the teacher. I have a whiteboard and a blackboard in my class, which my teacher uses as per the demand of the topic. I like the projector in my class; for crucial topics, our teachers use videos and graphical representation for better understanding. My seat is near a glass window, which I like the most as it has a stunning garden view.

My school believes in a no-baggage policy; therefore, all our books are in a big almirah in our classroom. Thanks to that, my bag remains light. My classroom is where we do lots of creative work and participate in competitions to boost our confidence. My teacher says this is our second home, and we should keep it clean; therefore, students take turns cleaning the classroom every day. We have two dustbins to make sure no wrapper or dry waste remains on the floor. After Covid, my classroom has a hand sanitiser bootle installed at the entry door, and no student can come without sanitising their hands. My classroom is hi-tech and equipped to tackle any emergency as it has a fire alarm, fire extinguisher, smoke detector, etc.

Your child will learn to give words to their thoughts and write a better composition on my classroom. Their writing skills get refined, and they learn new words that enrich their vocabulary.

1. Why Is The Classroom Important?

The classroom provides a favourable learning atmosphere for kids as it keeps away all distractions.

2. What Are Some Important Things In A Classroom?

Essential things in the classroom include chalk, duster, whiteboard, blackboard, windows for ventilation, lights, fans, and most importantly, books.

There is no time like school time, and there is nothing like a classroom. Writing an essay on a versatile topic like my classroom is fun and enriching. So, find expressions to your thoughts in this blog and craft a fantastic “my classroom” composition.

Essay on My School for Students and Children

500+ words essay on my school.

Education is an essential part of our lives. We are nothing without knowledge, and education is what separates us from others. The main step to acquiring education is enrolling oneself in a school. School serves as the first learning place for most of the people. Similarly, it is the first spark in receiving an education. In this essay on my school, I will tell you why I love my school and what my school has taught me.

We have all been to school and we have loved each and every moment we have spent over there as those were the building blocks of our lives. A school is a place where students are taught the fundamentals of life, as well as how to grow and survive in life. It instils in us values and principles that serve as the foundation for a child’s development.

My school is my second home where I spend most of my time. Above all, it gives me a platform to do better in life and also builds my personality. I feel blessed to study in one of the most prestigious and esteemed schools in the city. In addition, my school has a lot of assets which makes me feel fortunate to be a part of it. Let us look at the essay on my school written below.

essay on my school

Why I Love My School?

From kindergarten through primary and secondary school, and subsequently, to faculty, school is a place where we always study, grow, and establish ourselves, socialize, be a friend, help others, and love and be loved. School is a buddy that will accompany us from the beginning of our youth till the conclusion of our lives. At school, we share all of our pleasures and sorrows, and we constantly rely on one another. This is made possible through the friendships we share. They assist us in effortlessly overcoming difficulties, sharing moments of enjoyment together, and looking forward to new paths.

My school strikes the perfect balance between modern education and vintage architecture. The vintage buildings of my school never fail to mesmerize me with their glorious beauty. However, their vintage architecture does not mean it is outdated, as it is well-equipped with all the contemporary gadgets. I see my school as a lighthouse of education bestowing knowledge as well as ethical conduct upon us.

Teachers have the power to make or break a school. The teaching staff is regarded as the foundation of any educational society. It is their efforts to help kids learn and understand things that instil good habits and values in their students. While some concepts are simple to grasp, others necessitate the use of a skilled teacher to drive the home the idea with each pupil.

In contrast to other schools, my school does not solely focus on academic performance. In other words, it emphasizes on the overall development of their students. Along with our academics, extra-curricular activities are also organized at our school. This is one of the main reasons why I love my school as it does not measure everyone on the same scale. Our hardworking staff gives time to each child to grow at their own pace which instils confidence in them. My school has all the facilities of a library , computer room, playground, basketball court and more, to ensure we have it all at our disposal.

For me, my school is more than simply an educational institution; it is also my second family, which I established during my childhood. A family of wonderful friends, outstanding teachers, and fond school memories. I adore my school because it is where I learn how to be a good citizen and how to reach my goals. School is the only place where we make friends without judging them. We feel comfortable spending time with those close friends no matter what the situation.

What has My School Taught Me?

If someone asked me what I have learned from my school, I won’t be able to answer it in one sentence. For the lessons are irreplaceable and I can never be thankful enough for them. I learned to share because of my school. The power of sharing and sympathy was taught to me by my school. I learned how to be considerate towards animals and it is also one of the main reasons why I adopted a pet.

my school essay for class 1 easy

School is an excellent place to learn how to be an adult before entering the real world. Those abilities pay dividends whether you choose to be the bigger person in an argument or simply complete your domestic tasks. When you open your mind to new ideas, you gain a lot of influence in society. Picking up unexpected hobbies on your own will teach you more about what you like to do than simply completing things for a grade.

A school is a place where I developed my artistic skills which were further enhanced by my teachers. Subsequently, it led me to participate in inter-school completions through which I earned various awards. Most importantly, my school taught me how to face failures with grace and never give up on my ambitions, no matter what happens.

Schools also offer a variety of extracurricular activities such as Scouts and Guides, sports, N.C.C., skating, school band, acting, dancing, singing, and so on. Our principal also used to give us a short lecture every day for about 10 minutes about etiquette, character development, moral education, respecting others, and gaining excellent values. As a result, I can claim that what I am today is solely due to my school, which is the best institution in my opinion.

Teamwork is an important ability that schools teach. Schools are frequently the first places where youngsters have the opportunity to collaborate with children who are different from them. Collaboration is essential for the team and individual success. Students are taught that the success of a team depends on each individual component functioning together.

To sum it up, studying in one of the respected schools has helped me a lot personally. I will always be indebted to my school for shaping my personality and teaching me invaluable lessons. It has given me friends for life and teachers that I will always look up to. I aspire to carry on the values imbibed by my school to do well in life and make it proud.

My school is a place where I get educated; learn new subjects under the guidance of trained and skilled teachers. I study at a school that is near my home. It is one of the best schools in my entire town. The school has two playgrounds – one is a tennis court and the other one is a cricket ground. We also have a nice swimming pool and a canteen. It also has a beautiful garden where students relax and play during recess. Even in games, sports and tournaments, it has made much progress. My school has won many trophies, shields, and medals in many extra-curricular activities. In debates also, the students of my school secure good positions. It is considered to be one of the best schools in my locality.

My School Essay 200 Words

My School Essay 300 Words

An institution where higher education is taught is commonly called a school, University College, or University. Most countries have systems of formal education, which is sometimes compulsory. In these systems, Students progress through a series of schools. The names for these schools vary by country but generally include primary school for young children and secondary school for teenagers who have completed primary education.

My school is a place where I not only get educated but also get trained in other necessary competitive skills like sports, music, and dance. My School Essay 500 Words

The place where children as the leaders of tomorrow study and where the future of the nation is shaped are called schools. Education is an essential weapon for tomorrow, so the good schools of today are important for the best future of a nation. Schools are the center of learning where we attend classes on various subjects, interact with the teachers, get our queries

answered, and appeared in exams. In my school, learning is more like a fun activity, because of the extra-talented teaching staff.

My school is a government primary school located on the outskirts of the city. Usually, when people think about a government school, they perceive it to be at an isolated location and have poor basic amenities and teaching facilities. But, despite being a government school, my school defies all such speculations. Teachers of my school are not only knowledgeable about the subjects they teach but also are skilled enough to teach through fun activities. For example, our physics teacher explains every concept by stating real-life examples that we could relate to. This way we not only understand the subject better. Moreover, not a moment I remember, when any teacher had ever replied rudely to any of the students. They always patiently listen and provide answers to all the queries posed to them. Learning at my school is fun and it is made possible only because of the teachers.

My school is very important in my life, in a way even more than my family. My family gives me love, care, and affection, and provides for all my other essential needs. But, all of this isn’t enough to make me a good human being and succeed in life.  Favorably, I am lucky enough to be enrolled in a prestigious school, and gaining a wonderful education, looking forward to realizing my dreams one day. The most necessary for success in life is education, and only my school provides it to me. Without my school and the education that it gives, I would be like a confused and wandering soul, almost aimless in life.

My school helps with my educational and overall personality development. It imparts education through classes, tests, and exams to teach me how to conduct myself confidently. It just feels so great to be in my school and be a part of everyday activities, be it lectures, sports, or Something else. While in school, I always feel happy, confident, enthusiastic, and loved. I make friends at school, those whom I will never forget and will always love them. My family supports my materialistic needs, but school is the place where my actual physical, social, and mental development takes place.  I know that every question that crosses my mind will be answered by my teachers. I also know that my school friends will always be at my side whenever I need them to be. As much as the studies, my school also stresses much on These activities as the management thinks that extracurricular activities are very essential for our overall personality development. My school provides dedicated teachers and staff for each extracurricular activity. We have a big sports ground with kits for all the major sports; a covered auditorium for dance and music and a separate basketball court.

The role my school plays in my personality development is fantastic. It not only imparts education in me but also teaches me how to conduct myself and how to behave decently and properly. I get trained in all the other necessary skills of life, like how to keep calm in challenging situations and help others as well. My school teaches me to be a good and evolved human being, to stay composed and progressive always. It also teaches me to be kind and generous to others and not differentiate them based on their caste, religion, ethnicity, or other divisions. These are some of the most essential personality traits that my school imparts to me, something that I will always be thankful for. Every time I think of my school, I think of it as a temple of education. A temple, where my soul meets education, making my life more meaningful and useful to society and the nation as well. It is a place where my aspirations get a wing and I get the strength and confidence to realize them. No other place in the entire world could replace my school and the role that it plays in my life. I will always be thankful to my friends, teachers, and the staff of my school, for making it such a comfortable and Educational place of learning.

Frequently Asked Questions About Starting a College Essay

College essays are a huge part of your college career. If not huge, one of the biggest, and for someone who has been there and done that, I know the amount of pressure the beginning of a college essay, as well as the entire essay, can put on your shoulders.

Not only are you trying to juggle things like word count and grammar errors, but you're also trying to create the perfect college essay introduction that will attract admissions officers to your application or professors to your writing skills. And that, itself, can feel impossible, fill you with dread and self-doubt, but just breathe. I am here to help all present and future students know how to start a college essay.

Today is all about starting a college essay. I have come up with five easy and effective techniques that will help you create essays so good you're going to leave your readers wanting more , starting with your opening sentence! So, this is for all college students and college applicants. Stress no more! This guide was created to help you write a successful college essay. Let's get into it.

my school essay for class 1 easy

The beginning of your essay should, first and foremost, always have a strong opening sentence . This sentence sets the tone for not only your readers but for the entire essay. Having a wobbly, almost interesting opener can steer an admissions officer and/or professor away, so you want it to be strong. And it doesn't have to be complicated! Less is more in this situation. Here are a couple of ways you can accomplish this.

  • Look within and be relatable
  • Use your real life for inspiration
  • Think about ways to evoke emotion

Here are some examples of impressionable openers:

  • Example 1: When I was 11 years old, my mother told me she had cancer over breakfast.
  • Example 2: Maybe yellow isn't my favorite color.
  • Example 3: I sat next to this girl in class who made me feel stupid.

DISCLAIMER : your opener should ALWAYS adhere to the essay prompts. These are just a few examples that can capture your reader's attention almost immediately.

In order to keep readers interested, visuals are key . Image-based descriptions will not only add value to your writing, it will give your readers front seats to your essay's journey. These descriptions let actions speak for themselves.

Here is an example of a description and demonstration in an essay:

  • Example 1: "I was sitting on a bar stool when the word 'cancer' hit me like the smell of her coffee brewing on the stove. The Rice Krispies were popping in my cereal bowl, and MTV Jams was playing in the background, yet all I could hear was the sound of doom all around me. The lips of my mother were moving, but I was frozen, crumbling on this stool like my mother's health. She was sick, and I didn't know how sick or what that even meant, and that terrified me."

Why This Works:

Here you can clearly feel the writers emotional state: shocked, still, scared. Not only is this moment at breakfast traumatic, you feel frozen in time with the writer. Using descriptions like this will evoke so much emotion and leave your reader wanting more.

Something one of my teachers told me in high school was any good essay will have personal elements in it, no matter the topic. That always stuck with me and became the way I approached my college essays. Showing vulnerability in your writing will always guarantee interest. It also evokes emotion.

You can show vulnerability by:

  • Being honest
  • Explaining what's going on inside underneath the exterior
  • Describe what's going on around you at the moment
  • Letting go of the fear of being seen
  • Connecting with the topic
  • Being transparent about mistakes/flaws

Examples of showing vulnerability:

  • Example 1 : My mother telling me she had cancer over breakfast was not on my bingo card this year.
  • Example 2 : I never thought losing someone I love would change me.
  • Example 3: I had to lose everything in order to gain everything.

I know being vulnerable can be tough for some , but showing this side of you to college admissions officers and/or professors will not only make you stand out, but it can also help free you of things that might be weighing on your mind. Not to sound corny, but it can be therapeutic and make you a better writer . Just make sure you are staying on track with the essay prompt, and you're set!

Whether it's believed or not, an admissions officer wants to see pieces of you in your personal statement, so starting your essay by showing authenticity is a major major key. Along with being vulnerable, there are a few ways you can achieve this.

  • Reflect : Take the time to reflect on your experiences, values, and beliefs that have shaped who you are today. Let your values, passions, and interests shine through in your writing.
  • Mind Your Voice : Write in your own voice and avoid trying to sound like someone you're not. Authenticity comes from being genuine and true to yourself.
  • Tell Your Story : Share personal anecdotes and insights that show your unique perspective.
  • Be True to You : Focus on what matters to YOU (as long as you're on topic!). Write about what is meaningful and important to you rather than what you think admissions officers want to hear.

Above all, be open . Showing introspection and self-awareness in your essay will show any admissions committee who you are beneath the surface, as well as your personal growth.

You can also begin your essay being as random and silly as you'd like . It goes hand-in-hand with other important factors like vulnerability and authenticity. But don't get too crazy . Beginning your essay with something strange will definitely draw readers in. Let me show you what I mean.

  • Example 1 : I start my mornings off in silence and solitude to keep people away from me.
  • Example 2 : Sometimes, I like to circle big words in complex articles to learn new words. Yeah, but to also keep one in my back pocket for later use.
  • Example 3 : Being the youngest child means getting away with everything you want, and that's exactly how I like it.

Do you see how each sentence draws you in? Not only are they light-hearted, but they also make you want to know why you want to keep people away in the morning and what kind of weapon you're forming against others with new words. And every youngest sibling will attest to feeling that exact same way. All of these examples are sure to make your essay fun, show who you are, and leave readers wanting more.

mistakes to avoid in college essays

Years of writing college essays have taken me through every high and low of the process possible. And when they're good, they're great! But for some reason, my mistakes stick out more than anything. So, I've compiled a list of common mistakes to avoid when writing your college essay .

  • Avoid Being Cliche - While you want to be captivating, you want to avoid overly used syntax and phrases that could potentially lose your reader's curiosity. For example, "in today's day and age," "follow my heart," "don't judge a book by its cover," etc. are all cliches that can be avoided by thinking outside of the box.
  • Using Vocabulary to be Impressive - I know you want to impress the admissions committees, but it's important to stick to what you know and not what you can allude to. That is, use verbiage that resonates with your personality. Using extravagant words can work against you, and they can also sound forced. College admissions officers want to see the real you, so show it to them.
  • Steer Clear of Controversy - Though it's not said enough, your college essay should tell your personal story and not touch on things that can stir the pot. For instance, talking about politics and religious beliefs may not be the route you want to take UNLESS it's called for in the college essay topic. And if so, stay on track with the essay prompts.
  • Procrastinating : Waiting until the last minute to start writing your essay will bite you in the butt. You will feel rushed and end up writing a poorly crafted piece. Give yourself enough time to complete an essay draft, edit the draft, and repeat this two-step cycle until your essay is complete.
  • Lack of originality : This goes hand-in-hand with avoiding cliches. Your college essay should exude a lot of your personality, so show admissions officers and teachers who you are! Include your cultural background, test scores that you're proud of, any future aspirations, etc. This all depends on the essay prompts, of course, but in my experience, every essay topic has room to show who you are.
  • Ignoring the prompt : This is a major key. STAY ON TRACK. Make sure to carefully read and understand the essay prompt, and write your essay accordingly. The last thing you want to do is write a college essay that has nothing to do with the prompt. Reading is essential here.
  • Lack of focus : If you want to know how to start a college essay, that means knowing how to stay focused. Find a quiet space, turn off electronics, hide your phone, and really nestle into how you want to capture your reader's attention. This will help you use your five senses clearly, keep your writing strong and not write an overly wordy essay. Focus is the tool here.
  • Poor organization : Make sure your essay has a strong structure with clear transitions between paragraphs. An outline will work best to accomplish this. If you go into starting your college essay without a plan, be prepared to hit all roadblocks.
  • Neglecting to Revise and Edit : Like procrastinating, don't fail to revise and edit your work. Always, always, always proofread your essay for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors , as well as clarity and coherence.
  • Not Seeking Feedback : Listen, I know that completing an essay is an accomplishment in itself, and you immediately want to submit it, but it's so beneficial to have others read your essay for feedback. You can only spot so many holes in your work when your eyes are constantly reviewing it, so a second, third, or even fourth set of eyes can help point out areas for improvement.

Above all, trust the writing process. Though I do want you to be aware of your jargon, don't get too wrapped up in thinking you're making a mistake. That's what editing is for! Once you complete your college essay, you should always revise and edit accordingly . What you thought sounded good might make you edit it to sound great. Just keep in mind that many colleges are looking for honesty and authenticity vs how well you can sound on paper . So, if you're aware of these factors, you'll be good to go.

ways to overcome writers block

Ways to Overcome Writer's Block

Take it from someone who has suffered from chronic writer's block, it's a pain to get through . Imagine being on a writing streak so good that when you stop, the entire essay writing process stops as a whole. It's definitely a challenge, but after 10 years of writing essays and really honing my craft, I learned a few things that have helped me get through even the thickest of writer's blocks, and I want to share them with you. Check them out:

  • Take a break : This works every single time. Take a short break and step away from your computer to clear your mind and come back with a fresh perspective. For me, 15 minutes is all I ever need. If you need more time, that's okay. Just try not to make your break a rest.
  • Freewriting : Sometimes, I'd start writing without worrying about my structure or grammar to get the ideas flowing, and surprisingly enough, I found my essay taking a pleasant turn.
  • Change your environment : Move around. Don't underestimate the effects of a different location or workspace to stimulate creativity. Try coffee shops, bookstores, a park, or a new room in your house. New environment, new energy.
  • Set small goals : This one is actually the most important. Some people get overwhelmed with the word "essay" for things like lack of proper writing skills, pressure to write a great essay, etc. But if you try breaking down your writing task into smaller, manageable chunks to make it less overwhelming, it can help. For example, set a goal of three paragraphs one day, take a day to edit those paragraphs, two more the next day, and so forth. Find a formula that works for you.
  • Brainstorming : Write down all your ideas--everything. No matter how small you think the idea is, write it down. Even if these ideas seem unrelated, they will help you generate new thoughts and connections.
  • Read or listen to music : It took me a while to realize this helps, but engaging in other forms of art can inspire new ideas and break through mental blocks. And new creativity can lead you to impress admissions officers.
  • Talk it out : As a writer, it's hard to let people in on the creative process, but discussing my ideas with a friend, family member, or colleague helped me gain new perspectives and insights.
  • Relax and Meditate : Hear me out: it works! Practice deep breathing and/or meditation to reduce stress and anxiety that may be contributing to writer's block.

I won't sugarcoat it: the college application process can be intimidating , but it doesn't have to throw you off your game. When it comes to college essays, I see them as opportunities to be fun and expressive. Trust me when I say if you have fun with it, you'll attract the reader's attention , paint vivid details, and write an essay that will leave the admissions officer wanting you at their school. So, take it one step at a time and watch your personal statement come to life.

essays

How can I make my college essay stand out to admissions officers?

Simply put, be yourself. As long as you stay on track with the essay's topic, showing pieces of yourself will allow admissions officers to know more about who you are. Essays are meant to show readers who you are, how you feel, and what you think naturally, not robotically, so be authentic in your writing, and you'll be sure to stand out amongst the rest.

What are some common mistakes to avoid when writing a college essay?

Some common mistakes to avoid in your essay are using cliches and boring wording. You also want to avoid procrastinating, wasting time, not focusing, not editing, etc. When writing your essay, you want to make sure you give your writing the time and attention it deserves, so make sure you're aware of what is pulling you away from your writing. This will help you stay focused. If you have any other doubts, refer to the section about mistakes in this article and let it guide you to success.

How important is the college essay in the admissions process?

Your college essay is key in the admissions process . It's an admissions committee's first impression of you as a writer and potential student, so it should be taken very seriously. Trying to cut corners or rush through the writing process will be obvious, and it will stand out more than things like test scores, academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and any other positive influence you've had in your life. So, don't take the easy way out and really work on your essay.

I Invited My Students to Be the Principal for a Day. Here’s What I Learned

052024 OPINION Khoshaba PRINCIPAL end the year with positivity

  • Share article

There is tired and then there’s “educator tired.”

More meetings, more conflicts to mediate, more data to collect and analysis overload, and more staffing decisions—the to-do list is exhausting. By springtime, most of us are operating on empty tanks while battling a seasonal-affective slump carried over from the winter.

With some degree of consistency, we can predict the times of the year when staff morale is highest, as well as the months when you can expect teachers to be crawling toward the finish line of upcoming school breaks. I heard a person once say, “If we can predict it, then we can influence it.”

About This Series

In this biweekly column , principals and other authorities on school leadership—including researchers, education professors, district administrators, and assistant principals—offer timely and timeless advice for their peers.

Like many principals, I’m an optimistic person by nature. But in mid-February, I felt myself struggling to change my heartache of stress into heartfelt joy.

When I analyzed why I was feeling this way, it became clear that I wasn’t living my “why” for working in public education. I was drowning in meetings that discussed adult issues instead of being focused on student learning and the experience of being a student at my school.

After consulting with a colleague, I decided to change how I was spending my time at work. That small change had a huge impact on my ability to refocus and feel fulfilled.

Several years ago, I participated in a principal challenge for which I shadowed a student for a day. It was an amazing experience that allowed me to better understand my school from a student’s perspective.

As I reflected on how to reenergize several months ago, I decided to try this activity once again at my new school—but with a twist. I wanted to help bridge the divide between students and adults. This time, I offered my students the opportunity to be principal for the day by following me as I made my rounds with classroom visits and staff member meetings.

My request of the students who joined me was simple: 1) Get parent permission, 2) be responsible for the work you missed in class, 3) communicate with your teachers that you would be with me for the day, and 4) write up a one-page summary of the events of the day and your reflections.

To my surprise, I was flooded with student requests. Just the idea of having a shared experience with the students we serve was uplifting. I marveled at the idea that students would want to know what my job entailed. It was a great way to connect and build kinship between students and the leaders that serve them.

What I imagined would be one day with one student shadowing me evolved into three days of multiple students per day participating in this activity.

Here are some of the lessons from the students who joined me:

  • Students and staff have a right to speak up, even if they are the only dissenting voice.
  • Keep an open mind when people bring concerns to you. The importance of growing from mistakes was highlighted.
  • Treat everyone with respect, no matter their position.
  • Communication should be two ways, not a monologue.
  • Make time to help others.

They enjoyed seeing the authentic and positive relationships that occur between administration and students and staff, but I was just as happy to learn from the students. They shared that they were surprised to see how well staff got along with each other behind the scenes, as well as with students in the hallways and classrooms. Our first shadow-the-principal day was March 14 (aka Pi Day in the math world), so the students had a chance to eat pie while talking with teachers in the math workroom.

My “apprentices” also enjoyed hearing a student share his idea for completing his Eagle Scout project that provided diabetic kits for students in need. He and I brainstormed various ways to complete the project, as well as how to market and sustain it in the years to come. The students later commented that they were surprised to observe an administrator working alongside their peers, generating ideas together.

Besides circulating throughout the school and speaking with a number of students and staff, the apprentices and I discussed ways that artificial intelligence could be used to facilitate teaching and learning in a positive way. I always find it enlightening to hear students’ technology ideas, including for AI use—for example, to assist with study tips or to organize their notes—were as innovative as I had heard from any presenters.

Finally, we ended the day by taking a stroll around the track at our football stadium. I shared that I like to go outside as much as I can to exercise and gather my thoughts. I try to do that once per week as part of my self-care routine. The students shared that they were pleasantly surprised to hear me prioritize that type of activity and that they thought their peers would benefit from such an activity as well.

I’m proud of my students for taking a chance on being a leader for the day. Students in 2024 have so many pressures facing them, so accepting one more thing can be a daunting task.

Here’s a challenge for everyone reading this article: Make time to prioritize your own “why.” This is especially important as we enter the final marking period of the year, when emotions tend to run high and stamina tends to wane.

Fill your tank with the kind of energy that inspired you to enter our profession. Look for the moments in your school on a daily basis when you can be kind, learn something new, build a new relationship, and spend time with those that brought you into a career in education—your students!

General election latest: Greens make election pitch as Starmer denies PM caught him out

The Greens have launched their general election campaign with a call for a "bolder and braver" offering from Labour's Sir Keir Starmer. He has been in Wales to launch his party's campaign there, but has been forced to deny he's overseeing a cull of left-wing candidates.

Faiza Shaheen, who was removed last night as Labour's candidate in Chingford and Woodford Green, is launching a legal challenge against the decision, Sky News understands.

She was selected by local party members to contest the seat in July 2022, but Labour's National Executive Committee (NEC) decided last night that the party would not endorse her candidacy.

Following the decision, it is understood that she has instructed legal counsel to challenge the validity of the process, who we understand believes the process to have been "abhorrent, unprofessional and unfair".

In a statement on social media, Ms Shaheen said she was only informed of her removal last night, and described it as a "huge injustice".

"This is not the end of my story, and I will be releasing all the detail of what has happened to me publicly very soon," she added.

While other party leaders have been giving speeches - Sir Ed Davey has been having a bit more fun.

The Lib Dem leader went to Frome in Somerset where he went down a Slip N Slide with his party's candidate in the constituency.

More seriously, Sir Ed is unveiling his party's plans to for a mental health professional to work in every school, as data shows that 336,886 children are on mental health waiting lists.

Plaid Cymru has said "no more to ignoring Wales at Westminster" as the party launched its general election campaign.

The pro-Welsh independence party's leader, Rhun ap Iorwerth, said it was "time to kick the Conservatives out of power”"

But he also said Labour - who are in government in Wales - had taken the country "for granted".

"For too long, Wales has been overlooked at Westminster," told supporters at the launch in Bangor.

"Plaid Cymru says no more to austerity. Plaid Cymru says no more to empty promises.

"Plaid Cymru says no more to narrow-minded nostalgia and we say no more to ignoring Wales at Westminster."

The leader was joined by Liz Saville Roberts, the Dwyfor Meirionnydd candidate, and Llinos Medi who is standing for the party in Ynys Mon.

He said Plaid Cymru would "fight for Wales, day in, day out" and would offer a "real Welsh alternative".

Mr ap Iorwerth claimed Wales's voice at Westminster was being "diluted" after the number of Welsh constituencies was reduced from 40 to 32.

"We will not allow Plaid Cymru's voice to be silenced," he added.

"The message is clear, if you do want change, and goodness knows I do, think about how best to bring about that change."

Labour's "safety first" campaign has been overshadowed by "internal wrangling" about which candidates will be able to run in the election, says our political correspondent Tamara Cohen .

A public war of words over Diane Abbott's status as a potential candidate also remains unresolved, she says.

While it's "par for the course in politics" for certain candidates to be favoured by a party leadership, Labour has "gone further" with Ms Abbott, who is one of its best-known politicians and the first black woman MP, she says.

Other left-wing candidates "closer to Jeremy Corbyn's politics" being told they can't run "has seemed to many Labour MPs to increase the self-inflicted wound of having this battle over Diane Abbott", Cohen says.

The battle, which looks like it won't be resolved until next week, is "still very much on" despite Sir Keir Starmer's "warmer tone" towards her today, she adds.

After his campaign launch in Wales, Sir Keir Starmer spoke to broadcasters, and was asked if he is blocking left-wing candidates from standing.

It comes after an Lloyd Russell-Moyle, who was poised to content Brighton Kemptown, was suspended from the party last night following a complaint.

Faiza Shaheen, a candidate selected by local members in Chingford and Wood Green has also been removed by the National Executive committee.

And there continues to be uncertainty about the future of Diane Abbott.

The Labour leader replied: "No. I've said repeatedly over the last two years... that I want the highest quality candidates - that's been the position for a very long time."

On Ms Abbott, he repeated that "no decision has been taken to bar her".

He praised her as a "trailblazer" who overcame "incredible challenges" and "carved out the path for others to come into politics".

"And she did all that whilst being one of the most abused MPs across all political parties."

Green Party co-leaders Carla Denyer and Adrian Ramsay are speaking at the party's campaign launch, taking place in Bristol.

Ms Denyer welcomes the election being called, declaring the party is "ready" and "excited" for the campaign.

She tells the gathered activists: "We've got something to offer that no other party has - real hope and real change."

Mr Ramsay says the election is "historic" because the polling is "clear" that the Tories are going to lose, and hits out at the "chaotic and disruptive" governance of the last few years.

Ms Denyer also hits out at Labour, say people are "not offering that change", and are "disappointed by the way Starmer has backtracked on his promises of green investment, his weak offer on housing", and "more privatisation" of the NHS.

"Labour is failing to offer the real change needed," she argues.

"We have the practical solutions to the cost of living crisis, building new affordable homes, protecting our NHS from creeping privatisation, and cleaning up our toxic rivers and seas.

"That's why it's so important that when Labour form the next government, they are pushed beyond the timid change they are offering."

Mr Ramsay says their goal is to "elect at least four Green MPs" at this election - up from just one.

They start unveiling their key pledges, including pushing for reform of the tax system, building homes "for the right price in the right place", cleaning up the UK's waterways, ensuring a strong NHS, and stopping the "backsliding" on tackling the climate crisis.

Ms Denyer says voters are "excited that they have a genuine choice", saying the "incremental change Labour have put on the table just isn't going to cut it to get this country back on track".

The Green Party campaign launch is also under way this morning in Bristol.

Caroline Lucas, who is making a speech at the launch, calls it the most "ambitious campaign ever".

She says it was the "privilege of my life" to have been elected four times as a Green Party MP for Brighton Pavilion.

Ms Lucas says the election will see the Conservatives "shown the door" by voters.

"We think this is good news," she says, adding: "But what would be even better news would be that when a Labour government is formed, that government was pushed to be bolder and braver on everything from housing to the NHS to the accelerating climate crisis."

"That would happen by having more Green MPs in parliament," she says, saying the party is offering "bolder politics" and "real change".

Sir Keir Starmer has just delivered a speech in Monmouthshire in South Wales to launch Labour's general election campaign.

Here is what he said, as he said it (this post was updated live):

  • The Labour leader opens by praising a voter who spoke just before him who is switching from the Tories to Labour, saying it "vindicates" the work of the last four years;
  • He says "Wales has been waiting for this general election for a very, very long time", and as has the Labour Party;
  • He rejects the notion that Sunak was laying an "ambush" by calling the vote early, and says: "He didn't catch us";
  • Sir Keir reiterates his message of "change" and "national renewal", and appeals to families and businesses who are struggling to "rebuild Wales" and the whole country by voting Labour;
  • He turns to Port Talbot where thousands of workers are facing the prospect of job losses in the steel industry, telling Rishi Sunak: "Go and look those people in the eyes, as I've done, and you'll see their anxiety about the damage that's being done by a government that doesn't have a plan, that's too divided";
  • "I will fight for every single job that they have there, and the future of steel here in Wales," he declares;
  • "Imagine what could be delivered in Wales" with Labour governments in the Senedd and in Westminster, he says;
  • Sir Keir acknowledges that achieving his missions will be "difficult", but argues that he has done "difficult" work in previous roles, and says Labour "will never shy away" from the work that's needed, discussing at length  his "first steps for change" ;
  • In closing, Sir Keir says this is "a change election where we can stop the chaos and division, we can turn the page and rebuild Wales and the United Kingdom together".

Shadow Welsh secretary Jo Stevens is next to take the stage.

She says she is "hugely proud" to be in the position, and adds that Labour is "back in the service of working people".

Wales is "brimming with potential" and punches "way above [its] weight" in culture and sport, she says.

She then jokes that "unlike Rishi Sunak" she knows who is playing in the Euros this year- referencing a gaffe by the prime minister last week in which he asked Welsh voters if they will watch the football tournament, even though Wales did not qualify.

Ms Stevens says her country has been held back by "14 years of chaos and incompetence" at the hands of the Tory government.

She says Labour's first steps, which the party is launching today, are the "antidote".

"If you want to see the economy grow after years of stagnation, if you're struggling to pay for your food and your energy bills, if you want an NHS that is fit for the future and opportunities for your children, if you want safe streets and secure borders, then our changed Labour party is proudly for you," she says.

There is now a "once in a generation opportunity" to deliver a Labour government "at both ends of the M4," she says, calling it "the prize we fight for".

Next to speak at Labour's Welsh campaign launch is the shadow foreign secretary, David Lammy.

He tells the gathered activists: "The first time I ever left the inner-city constituency of Tottenham, I was nine years old, and it was Wales that I came to.

"I can't convey how wonderful it is to be here again with Keir Starmer and Vaughan Gething - it means a lot."

Mr Lammy says Britain and the world face the same challenges, visible through "organised crime gangs that exploit the vulnerable" in Wales, across the UK, and across Europe.

"The numbers of people crossing the Channel on small boats has surged under the Tories, while tens of thousands remain in asylum hotels, permanently in limbo with no prospect of removal due to the government's failed illegal migration bill."

The shadow foreign secretary explains that the level of illegal migration "takes more than £3bn off our overseas aid budget, which would stop them coming in the first place".

He describes the Rwanda scheme as a "shameless gimmick" - something which is greeted by applause from the audience.

"This will never, ever deter organised crime," he declares, and makes the case that only Sir Keir Starmer and the shadow home secretary, Yvette Cooper, "have a plan to smash the gangs and prosecute serious organised crime".

"Labour will stop the chaos, bust the backlogs, and rebuild our broken asylum system," he declares, touting Labour's plan to create a new Border Security Command and end hotel use.

Mr Lammy praises the achievements of the Welsh Labour government, and says much more could be done with a Labour government in Westminster.
