Homework Planner Template

The best thing I can say about this homework planner is that my own kids like it enough to want me to print a copy for them each week. The design for this planner came from a mash-up of the techniques that my brother and I used in college to organize our time. I've refined the design based on feedback from my kids (one high-schooler and two home-schoolers).

How It Works : This planner combines two very useful tools for keeping track of your homework assignments, both on a single page. First, on the left is a homework check list for each of your classes. Use it to list the assignments, due dates, and the estimated time to complete each assignment. List upcoming exams and plan times to study. Second, on the right side you can plan your week to figure out how you will get everything done.

Printable Homework Planners

The following PDF files can be printed as needed. The main difference is in the weekly schedule because high-schoolers and home-schoolers tend to do their homework at different times of the day.

Student Homework Planner PDF

License : Private Use (not for distribution or resale)

Authors: Jon Wittwer and Jim Wittwer

Description

This spreadsheet includes two separate worksheets with slightly different designs. The Homeschool design doesn't include the "time" column because we found it wasn't as critical to predict how much time a particular assignment would take. However, for high school and college, estimating the time to complete each assignment can be extremely helpful.

We designed it so that you can either print blank copies of the planner, or edit it electronically. You may be able to store and edit this planner on your mobile device if you are using Excel for iPad/iPhone or Google Sheets.

Tips for Students:

1. Customize the template: Using Excel or Word, enter your class names on the left and your typical weekly schedule. For example, use the schedule to highlight the times for each of your classes, your extracurricular activities, part-time jobs, etc.

2. Print blank copies: After customizing the template, you can print as many of these planner pages as you need, and you won't need to enter your typical weekly schedule each time.

3. Don't forget incomplete assignments: When switching to a new page each week, don't forget to go through your list of assignments and transfer the incomplete assignments to the new page.

4. Don't lose it: Keep your planner page in a folder that you always have with you. If you are worried about misplacing it, try taking a picture of it with your phone as a backup.

5. Use a mobile app: If you have a phone with the Excel or Word app or Google Docs app, and you are allowed to use a mobile device in school, you could try going paperless and editing the template on your phone. You could also try using one of the many "student planner" or "homework planner" mobile apps. The problem with this approach is that phones can be a huge distraction. If you are obsessed with Instagram or texting, it may be better to avoid using your phone if you want to get anything done.

Note to Teachers:

You are welcome to print copies of this planner to give to your students. The worksheet is pretty intuitive, but don't assume that students will know how to use it. Teach them about managing their time and help them learn how a planner can help.

One important thing that you can do to help your students is to give them a realistic estimate of how much time each assignment will take. If you get a lot of students complaining that an assignment took longer than you said, either cut back the work (if it was excessive), or use the feedback to give a better estimate next time around.

How to Create a Digital Planner in Google Sheets

Want to stay organized and productive without the hassle of paper? Learn how to create your own custom digital planner in Google Sheets.

Organizing your daily tasks and schedules can be simplified with a digital planner. Thankfully, you don’t need to pay for a specialized app or wrestle with an overly complicated program—Google Sheets can get the job done.

Creating a digital planner in Google Sheets is both easy and straightforward. Whether you're mapping out personal or work-related tasks, it's got all the features you need to get organized and stay on top of your responsibilities.

Step 1: Prepare the Google Sheet

To prepare the sheet, we'll only keep the rows and columns to fit the daily planner and delete the rest. You can also opt to do this step later. Here's how:

  • Open a blank Google Sheet .
  • Select the first column you want to delete (for this example, that’s column H) and press Ctrl + Shift + right arrow to select the rest of the columns on the right.
  • Select the first row you want to delete (for this example, that’s row 35) and press Ctrl + Shift + down arrow to select the rest of the rows below.

Step 2: Add Text to the Digital Planner

Now, let’s add some text to the digital planner. This includes labels for the header, date, top priorities, to-do list, notes, and time slots (for scheduling the day).

For this digital planner, we’ll be using 1-hour time slots from 6AM to 10PM. We’ll insert checkboxes next to each to-do item, a date picker, and extract the weekday name from the date.

  • Type 6AM in cell B6 . Notice how it automatically changes to 6:00AM.
  • With cell B6 selected, place your cursor over the bottom right corner of the cell, so it changes to a plus symbol.

If you haven’t selected any date, the weekday name defaults to Saturday (as shown in the image above).

Step 3: Customize the Appearance of the Digital Planner

At this point, the digital planner appears quite dull and basic. We’ll apply some Google Sheets formatting tips to make it look better.

This includes adjusting cell widths, merging cells, applying borders, and adding some color. We'll also hide gridlines and tweak the text appearance for a cleaner look.

Step 4: Apply Conditional Formatting to the Digital Planner

For this planner, we’ll apply a strikethrough to completed tasks in the to-do list section. This helps you see at a glance what's done and what's left for the next day.

  • Under the to-do list section, highlight the cells next to the checkboxes.
  • Under Format rules , select Custom formula is .
  • Click Done to save the changes.

Here’s the conditional formatting in action.

Tips for Maintaining and Updating Your Digital Planner in Google Sheets

Once you've created your digital planner in Google Sheets, it's essential to keep it organized and easy to update. Here are a few handy tips to consider:

1. Save Your Design as a Template

After perfecting your planner's design, rename the Google Sheets workbook as “Daily Planner Template”.

At the start of a new month, make a copy of this template—go to the File tab and select Make a copy . This gives you a clean start each time and lets you keep past records for future reference.

2. Keep a “Day 0” Sheet in Your Template

Place an untouched version of your daily planner at the beginning of your workbook. To plan a new day, duplicate the “Day 0” sheet, name it with the day’s date, and start planning.

3. Use Color-Coding for Clarity

Color-coding your tasks allows you to quickly assess task categories, priorities, or progress. For example, for category-based color coding, you can use blue for work-related tasks, orange for personal errands, and pink for appointments or meetings.

You can do this manually or use conditional formatting to automate the process based on specific criteria.

Stay Focused With a Simple Digital Planner in Google Sheets

Using a digital planner in Google Sheets keeps things simple, allowing you to stay organized and focused. So, now that you have the steps to create one from scratch, put them into action to create your own. The key to achieving your goals starts here.

How To Make A Schedule In Google Sheets (With Free Templates)

Post Author - Jitesh Patil

Google Sheets is a free, flexible, and online alternative to planner apps that you can use to organize and manage your schedule. Want to know how? Keep reading to learn how to make a schedule and daily planner in Google Sheets.

Here’s what’s in the article:

Ready to get started? Let’s dive in.

How to make a weekly schedule in Google Sheets

Here’s a simple three-step process to create a weekly planner in Google Sheets.

Step 1: Make a copy of the free Google Sheets Weekly Schedule template.

Make a copy of the schedule template

To make a copy:

  • Click to open the Weekly Schedule Planner template .
  • Go to File → Make a copy to save the template to your Google Drive.

Step 2: Familiarize yourself with the schedule template

You’ll notice that this weekly planner has the following features:

  • Space to organize your schedule for an entire week
  • Undated planner with a customizable week start date
  • 30-minute slots to plan your day in detail
  • Space to add notes and to-do items at the end
  • Automatic light-green background for scheduled events

Step 3: Customize the weekly schedule start date

Customize weekly schedule start date

You’ll notice that you can customize the week start date in cell “C4” of the Google Sheet. Changing this date automatically adjusts the dates and days in rows 7 and 8.

To customize the week start date:

  • Double-click on the “C4” cell.
  • On the calendar popup, select the date from which you want the week to start.

Alternatively, you can type in the date in cell “C4” in your local format.

With this feature, you can choose if you want your week to start on a Sunday, Monday, or any other day of the week.

How to make a monthly schedule in Google Sheets?

The steps to create a monthly schedule are very similar to those above. However, you need a different template for a monthly planner.

Step 1: Make a copy of the Google Sheets Monthly Schedule Template

  • Click to open the Monthly Schedule Planner template .

Step 2: Familiarize yourself with the monthly planner

Monthly schedule planner template

It comes with the following features:

  • Space to organize an entire month’s schedule
  • Space to add notes and to-do items
  • Undated calendar with customizable month

Step 3: Customize the monthly schedule planner

Customize the monthly schedule planner

You can change the month in cell “C4”. When you change the month, it automatically changes the days and the dates for the month below.

To customize the month:

  • On the calendar popup, select any date from the month for which you want to create a planner.

Alternatively, you can type in the first date of a month in cell “C4” in your local format.

Tips to improve your Google Sheets scheduling experience

Google Sheets comes with powerful features. Here are three tips to improve your scheduling and planning experience.

Tip 1: Create schedules for more than a week or month

You can easily create schedules for multiple weeks (or months) by duplicating the sheet “Sheet 1” in your Google Sheets spreadsheet.

Duplicate sheet to create a schedule for multiple weeks

To duplicate a sheet:

  • Click on the dropdown arrow next to the sheet’s name.
  • Then click “Duplicate”

To make more sense of your weeks, you can also rename the sheet to a suitable name.

Tip 2: Freeze rows to improve efficiency

Freezing a row lets you see it continuously on the screen even when you scroll to the bottom of the sheet.

In the week or month planner, freezing the Day rows will save you the mental energy to figure out which day of the week or month you’re looking at. Plus, you don’t have to scroll up and down constantly to look up a specific date or day.

Freeze rows in Google Sheets schedule to improve productivity

To freeze date and day rows:

  • Select rows 7 and 8 in the weekly planner or row 7 in the monthly schedule planner.
  • Then click on “View → Freeze → Up to row 4” in the spreadsheet menu to freeze the rows.

Tip 3: Make your schedule available offline

There are times when you may have to access your schedule spreadsheet without an internet connection.

All you need is the Google Docs Offline extension (along with the Chrome browser).

Enable offline mode in Google Docs

Once you’ve installed the extension, here’s how you can enable offline mode for all your Google documents:

  • Go to docs.google.com
  • Click on the hamburger menu icon before the logo, then click on “Settings”
  • Finally, enable the offline mode

Now you can access your schedule even with limited internet.

Pros and cons of a Google Sheets schedule

Google Sheets can be a powerful yet cost-effective way to make and manage your schedule. It comes with the following advantages:

  • It’s free : Google Sheets comes free with your Gmail (or Google Workspace) account. You can save some money spent on a scheduling tool.
  • Everyone knows how to use a spreadsheet: It’s simple. So you don’t have to spend time learning a new tool.
  • Easy to share and collaborate: Share your daily schedule with your team. Let them add comments or notes.

Disadvantages include:

  • Team schedules are a nightmare: Managing and coordinating plans with your team, across multiple spreadsheets can be a challenge.
  • Limited details: You can only include so much information in a spreadsheet cell. You can’t attach a file or document.
  • Missing long-term view: With Google Sheets, you can plan for a week or a month in advance. But what if you need a bird’s-eye view over the next six months or a year?

If these drawbacks affect your work efficiency, you may want to consider using other tools to manage your (and your team’s) schedule.

Google Sheets alternatives for managing schedules

From free calendars to simple timeline tools you have a lot of options for managing schedules.

Calendars are great for capturing, organizing, and managing personal events. However, for managing your entire team’s event schedules and tasks you need a bit more.

Toggl Plan—a simple work scheduling and tracking tool for teams—can help.

To plan your week, month, or even a year create a Plan timeline. Then click on the timeline to create a task. Change the tasks’ schedule with simple drag and drop. Or drag the tasks’ ends on the timeline.

Toggl Plan's drag and drop timelines

With Toggl Plan you can create unlimited Plan timelines and add unlimited color-coded milestones. To get a clear overview of your schedule zoom in on a week’s schedule or zoom out to a month, quarter, or year.

Next, assign tasks to team members (or yourself). Add task details, attach files, or include a task checklist to improve the task-completion quality. You can also schedule the tasks for a specific time.

Free Assignment Tracking Template for Google Sheets

  • Last updated December 14, 2023

Are you looking for an assignment tracking template? When your tasks begin to pile up into several imaginary towers, it’s easy for you to be overwhelmed, not knowing where to start. Moreover, you might not even be able to keep track of all of them, resulting in missed assignments and potentially bad marks.

Having an assignment tracker to keep every task means you’ll be able to organize, stay on top, and complete all your assignments on time. All you need to do is open our Assignment Tracking Template , hit the  “Make a copy”  button and start sorting out your to-do list.

Access Template

While it’s easy to navigate, make sure you read ahead to discover how to use our assignment tracking template to the fullest. We also have another assignment tracking template  that lets you map out your assignments throughout the semester—a perfect fit for your syllabus.

Table of Contents

What Should a Good Homework Spreadsheet Have?

In general, you’ll want a few fields that will help describe your assigned tasks and some markers for better organization. Here are some essential components to look for:

  • Assignment description: An efficient assignment tracking template will have space so you can jot down assignment notes. This avoids confusion and lets you anticipate the difficulty of your to-dos.
  • Dates:  Having dedicated fields for your due dates lets you plan your schedule better. This way, you know how much time you have to complete a task. Additionally, when paired with your assignment notes, you can sort them according to priority levels.
  • Completion status: Keeping track of task statuses lets you know which tasks have started, are in progress, are accomplished, or need revision. Moreover, it’s also a great way to remember which tasks you need to return to.
  • Subject and type:  You also want to categorize your assignments into their respective subjects. Another way to group them is by assignment type, including papers, lab reports, collaborative work, and similar tasks.

The components above are only a few useful fields in an assignment tracking template. For example, some spreadsheets also include monthly views or trackers for semester-wide assignment lists . Templates such as these will undoubtedly have other categories you’d need to explore.

Basic Assignment Tracking Template

With all the considerations laid out above, we created a simple but effective assignment tracking template you can use for free. While it may only feature a single functional tab, it has nine named columns you can organize according to your tasks.

If you haven’t already, you can download our free assignment tracking template here:

Let’s discuss the template in more detail .

Column A—Days Remaining

This is self-explanatory, but you can refer to this column to see the number of days you have left to do or submit your assignment. Depending on the days remaining, you can also decide which tasks to prioritize according to their deadlines.

The cells under this column are automatically updated using our pre-loaded formulas , so avoid modifying them. Instead, you can change the values under the last two columns of this template.

Assignment tracking template—days remaining column

Columns B to D—Tags for Status, Subject, and Task Type

Under these columns, you can set the categories of your assignments either by their completion status, class, or assignment type. You can select the values from the drop-down lists that come with the template based on the American curriculum.

Additionally, these statuses are associated with specific colors, making them more visual so that you can view and handle multiple ongoing tasks more efficiently. If the subjects listed differ from what you’re currently taking, you can modify the options.

To modify the subject options, follow the steps below:

  • First, click on a cell’s drop-down list and locate the pen icon at the bottom.

Assignment tracking template—drop-down list pen icon

  • Click the pen icon to open the drop-down settings on the left-hand side of your screen.
  • Change the values listed on the options, such as editing Math  to Physics.
  • Once you’ve set your preferred selection, click the “ Done” button.

Assignment tracking template—data validation on Google Sheets

  • Upon clicking, a pop-out might appear on your screen asking whether to apply the changes to a wider cell range.
  • Simply click “Apply   to all”  to replicate the changes to the other cells.

Assignment tracking template—apply data validation to all

Another handy feature is the filter option in the “Status”  column. You can use this to view your tasks based on their completion level. For example, you can choose to see only the in-progress tasks. Here’s how you do it.

  • To get started, click on the filter icon next to the “Status”  label.

Assignment tracking template—filter icon on Google Sheets

  • You should see a list of values with checkmarks on their left side once you scroll down.
  • To deselect all of them, click on “ Clear.”

Assignment tracking template—clearing filter values on Google Sheets

  • Next, begin selecting the tasks you want to see per status, such as To start  and In-progress.
  • Finally, click “OK.”

Assignment tracking template—change filter value on Google Sheets

  • To revert the view, simply follow steps one to five, ensuring to select all the categories again.

Columns E to I—Assignment Details

You can start entering the information you know about the tasks at hand. The columns E to G are divided into three categories: Assignment Title, Description, and Files/Links. If your assignment has attachments and URLs, such as resources, you can keep them in the last column mentioned.

Assignment tracking template—assignment details tracker

Meanwhile, columns H to I serve as fields where you can input the dates when your task is given and when you need to submit it. Take note that these are installed with data validation rules—you can’t enter values that aren’t valid dates. These values are also used to calculate the Days Remaining column.

Semester Assignment Spreadsheet

If you are looking to plan your entire semester ahead of time with your potential tasks, this is a helpful assignment tracking template. It’s much simpler than the previous spreadsheet discussed and gives you a semester-wide overview of your assignments.

Get the template here:   Semester Assignment Spreadsheet

This assignment tracking template has only three fields that you can update. The first field is the (1) Date , which is located under the seven days of the week (with a total of fifteen weeks in the spreadsheet as per the American semester.)

Assignment tracking template—semester assignment spreadsheet

The second is the (2) Tags  field, which allows you to categorize your tasks according to the subject. As with the other template, these tags are color-coded for an easier view. Lastly, you can also populate the (3) Assignment Details , the blank spaces beside the tags.

Why Use Our Assignment Schedule Templates?

You can virtually make a never-ending list of benefits from using a homework spreadsheet, but to name a few, here are some reasons why they’re beneficial for managing your workload.

  • Organization: As repeatedly emphasized, these assignment tracking templates help you categorize your tasks according to subject, type, and completion status, making it easier to organize your workload.
  • Time Management:  You can keep track of your due dates better with the automated counting of the days remaining for a task. You can manage your time better and learn to prioritize tasks according to deadlines.
