  1. Well-formed formulas of propositional logic

Any expression that obeys the syntactic rules of propositional logic is called a well-formed formula, or WFF . Fortunately, the syntax of propositional logic is easy to learn. It has only three rules: Any capital letter by itself is a WFF. Any WFF can be prefixed with "~". (The result will be a WFF too.)

  2. 7.4: Logical Operators as Truth Functions

A function is something that takes an input and gives you an output. So logical operators are Truth Functions in the sense that they take truth values as inputs and give you truth values as an output. Truth functions work together in a particular order to determine what individual output will result from a set of inputs. So just as: ¬ A.

  3. Sentential Logic

The main logical operator of (¬E ∨ (F → G)) is disjunction, ∨. Sentences. Recall that a sentence is a meaningful expression that can be true or false. Since the meaningful expressions of SL are the wffs and since every wff of SL is either true or false, the definition for a sentence of SL is the same as the definition for a wff.

  4. [SL02] Well-formed formula

A grammatical expression is called a well-formed formula (WFF). A WFF of SL is any expression of SL that can be constructed according to these rules of formation : Rules of formation for SL. All sentence letters are WFFs. If φ is a WFF, then ~φ is a WFF. If φ and ψ are WFFs, then (φ&ψ), (φvψ), (φ→ψ), (φ↔ψ) are also WFFs.

  5. PHIL102: Introduction to Critical Thinking and Logic

§5. Grammatical Categories. Here are some useful terms for talking about WFFs and their parts. If φ and ψ are WFFs, then: (φ&ψ) is a conjunction where φ and ψ are the first and second conjunct respectively. (φvψ) is a disjunction where φ and ψ are the two disjuncts. (φ→ψ) is a conditional sentence where φ is the antecedent and ψ the consequent.

  7. [PL05] Well-formed formula

To show how a complex wff is constructed, we can draw a construction tree for that wff. A construction tree is a tree diagram with arrows linking wffs. Starting with non-complex wffs at the top, the diagram shows how a complex wff can be built up step-by-step using the formation rules of MPL. Here for example is a construction tree for "~(P&~Fa)" :

  8. [SL04] Complex truth-tables

Similarly, when we draw a truth-table for a WFF in SL, we are trying to list a set of possible situations to determine when the WFF is true (if ever) and when it is false (if ever). §2. Drawing a truth-table. To draw a truth-table for a WFF, follow the following procedure. First, remember that there are four regions in a full truth-table:

We've now got the "letters" of our language: propositional variables, connective symbols, and brackets. Just like the letters a, b, c…z can be used to make English sentences, we can now build what we will call formulas, like (p ∨ q), or (p (q ∧ (¬ ⁢ r))).But just like eifaefeaioj is a legitimate string of letters that isn't a meaningful word, ∧ p q) ¬ doesn't seem like ...

  12. Chapter 4 Propositional Logic

Chapter 4. Propositional Logic. Categorical logic is a great way to analyze arguments, but only certain kinds of arguments. It is limited to arguments that have only two premises and the four kinds of categorical sentences. This means that certain common arguments that are obviously valid will not even be well-formed arguments in categorical logic.
