As the saying goes, yesterdays are memories in that once the time is gone it will never be recovered. How we spend our day and what we do count each day and it marks a great difference in our yesterdays. In the present, we might not think about our past, but when we reflect carefully, we realize that we could have done things in a better way.  Hence, yesterday guides our tomorrow.  That is why a value how I spend my day by being more productive. Yesterday I woke up at 6 a.m and did my daily routine of brushing my teeth, taking a shower and taking my normal breakfast before taking off to my daily work routine.

Yesterday’s topic was significant because infection was becoming common among preschool children in my school. My topic for the day was about a simple care routine. As part of my presentation involved emphasizing on hygiene and safety as part of their daily routine. I focused on the simplest activities that every child could easily participate and have fun by learning hand washing skills. I choose washing hands to show children at an early age how to prevent infection from entering their body.

The outcome of the lesson was to teach children in my class to wash their hands properly and how they could take care of their health. I believe that infection is passed through the hands. Therefore, the main emphasis was to wash hands before eating any food. What inspired me to teach care routine was to ensure that most of the children in my class would not miss school for being sick. I believe that preventing germs from entering the children’s bodies.

During my lesson I had a jug full of warm water, I had a dry towel and soap. I gave out instructions to every child on how to wash their hands properly. I pinned up a picture of a child washing her hands that had instructions on how the wash hands and when to wash hands. The colored picture was the main attraction in class; everyone gathered around the picture to look at what the child was doing. After looking at the picture, I started the demonstration by teaching children the four main steps of washing hands. The first step was to get the hands wet and soapy, after that by putting soap on their hands. After that, I rubbed the soap on my hands long enough. I also showed them the importance of cleaning their palms, the back of the hands and between their fingers. I reminded the children also to clean under their nails to remove the dirt and the germs. After that, the next step was to rinse the hands using clean running water by rubbing the hands while rinsing.  After rinsing, the hands let the hands dry before drying them completely using a towel.

Everyone followed the four steps of washing hands and promised to make it a routine. However, many of them still needed to be assisted to reach the sink. I urged them to ask their siblings and parents to help them in washing their hands; this would also enable the adults to participate in the activity by helping the child. One of the important points I wanted to pass that day was to stay healthy by washing hands before every meal and after visiting the toilet. The above activities formed part of my yesterday routine. Like other preschool teachers, it is my duty to ensure that children learn from an early age how to prevent infection.

In order to make it clearer, I can describe how I spent yesterday, all day. When I woke up in the morning, I got up, cleaned my teeth, had a shower and then brushed myself clean, and then walked to the table for breakfast with my parents.

Mom was cooking a wonderful breakfast for us all and we enjoyed the toasty hot toasts that she prepared. As it was a day off I decided to spend time with my buddies and so I went to my friend’s house following breakfast. There, we played for hours and had fun. A few of his friends came over later to play. We played for quite a long time until we were exhausted and tired. After that, we took a break and drank a cold beverage that his mom gave us, and then we made it to our homes.

In the kitchen, Mom made a delicious lunch for me. Then, after having a shower I had lunch. Due to my fatigue, I fell asleep. When I woke I realized it was tea time. Mom had prepared a hot, snack that was crunchy and I loved the snacks, along with hot tea we talked for a while.

After that, I was able at my desk and worked on some assignments that I needed to finish. When I was finished with my homework, Dad came home from work. After he was fresh after work, we all sat and played games indoors and discussed the events of the day for all of us. It was then dinner time, and Mom prepared dinner for us.

We talked, had a chat and laughed over general discussions, and then spent time together. After that, we cleaned up the kitchen, said family prayers, and then it was time for me to fall asleep. I wished my parents goodnight and fell asleep peacefully. When the day is positive it’s like feeling happy and good.

If you grow up to be a professional writer, everything you write will first go through an editor before being published. This is because the process of writing is really a process of re-writing —of rethinking and reexamining your work, usually with the help of someone else. So what does this mean for your student writing? And in particular, what does it mean for very important, but nonprofessional writing like your college essay? Should you ask your parents to look at your essay? Pay for an essay service?

If you are wondering what kind of help you can, and should, get with your personal statement, you've come to the right place! In this article, I'll talk about what kind of writing help is useful, ethical, and even expected for your college admission essay . I'll also point out who would make a good editor, what the differences between editing and proofreading are, what to expect from a good editor, and how to spot and stay away from a bad one.

What's next, what kind of help with your essay can you get.

Rather than talking in general terms about "help," let's first clarify the two different ways that someone else can improve your writing . There is editing, which is the more intensive kind of assistance that you can use throughout the whole process. And then there's proofreading, which is the last step of really polishing your final product.

Let me go into some more detail about editing and proofreading, and then explain how good editors and proofreaders can help you."

Editing is helping the author (in this case, you) go from a rough draft to a finished work . Editing is the process of asking questions about what you're saying, how you're saying it, and how you're organizing your ideas. But not all editing is good editing . In fact, it's very easy for an editor to cross the line from supportive to overbearing and over-involved.

Ability to clarify assignments. A good editor is usually a good writer, and certainly has to be a good reader. For example, in this case, a good editor should make sure you understand the actual essay prompt you're supposed to be answering.

Open-endedness. Good editing is all about asking questions about your ideas and work, but without providing answers. It's about letting you stick to your story and message, and doesn't alter your point of view.

Think of an editor as a great travel guide. It can show you the many different places your trip could take you. It should explain any parts of the trip that could derail your trip or confuse the traveler. But it never dictates your path, never forces you to go somewhere you don't want to go, and never ignores your interests so that the trip no longer seems like it's your own. So what should good editors do?

Help Brainstorm Topics

Sometimes it's easier to bounce thoughts off of someone else. This doesn't mean that your editor gets to come up with ideas, but they can certainly respond to the various topic options you've come up with. This way, you're less likely to write about the most boring of your ideas, or to write about something that isn't actually important to you.

Help Revise Your Drafts

Here, your editor can't upset the delicate balance of not intervening too much or too little. It's tricky, but a great way to think about it is to remember: editing is about asking questions, not giving answers .

Revision questions should point out:

  • Places where more detail or more description would help the reader connect with your essay
  • Places where structure and logic don't flow, losing the reader's attention
  • Places where there aren't transitions between paragraphs, confusing the reader
  • Moments where your narrative or the arguments you're making are unclear

But pointing to potential problems is not the same as actually rewriting—editors let authors fix the problems themselves.

Bad editing is usually very heavy-handed editing. Instead of helping you find your best voice and ideas, a bad editor changes your writing into their own vision.

You may be dealing with a bad editor if they:

  • Add material (examples, descriptions) that doesn't come from you
  • Use a thesaurus to make your college essay sound "more mature"
  • Add meaning or insight to the essay that doesn't come from you
  • Tell you what to say and how to say it
  • Write sentences, phrases, and paragraphs for you
  • Change your voice in the essay so it no longer sounds like it was written by a teenager

Colleges can tell the difference between a 17-year-old's writing and a 50-year-old's writing. Not only that, they have access to your SAT or ACT Writing section, so they can compare your essay to something else you wrote. Writing that's a little more polished is great and expected. But a totally different voice and style will raise questions.

Where's the Line Between Helpful Editing and Unethical Over-Editing?

Sometimes it's hard to tell whether your college essay editor is doing the right thing. Here are some guidelines for staying on the ethical side of the line.

  • An editor should say that the opening paragraph is kind of boring, and explain what exactly is making it drag. But it's overstepping for an editor to tell you exactly how to change it.
  • An editor should point out where your prose is unclear or vague. But it's completely inappropriate for the editor to rewrite that section of your essay.
  • An editor should let you know that a section is light on detail or description. But giving you similes and metaphors to beef up that description is a no-go.

Proofreading (also called copy-editing) is checking for errors in the last draft of a written work. It happens at the end of the process and is meant as the final polishing touch. Proofreading is meticulous and detail-oriented, focusing on small corrections. It sands off all the surface rough spots that could alienate the reader.

Because proofreading is usually concerned with making fixes on the word or sentence level, this is the only process where someone else can actually add to or take away things from your essay . This is because what they are adding or taking away tends to be one or two misplaced letters.

Laser focus. Proofreading is all about the tiny details, so the ability to really concentrate on finding small slip-ups is a must.

Excellent grammar and spelling skills. Proofreaders need to dot every "i" and cross every "t." Good proofreaders should correct spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar. They should put foreign words in italics and surround quotations with quotation marks. They should check that you used the correct college's name, and that you adhered to any formatting requirements (name and date at the top of the page, uniform font and size, uniform spacing).

Limited interference. A proofreader needs to make sure that you followed any word limits. But if cuts need to be made to shorten the essay, that's your job and not the proofreader's.

A bad proofreader either tries to turn into an editor, or just lacks the skills and knowledge necessary to do the job.

Some signs that you're working with a bad proofreader are:

  • If they suggest making major changes to the final draft of your essay. Proofreading happens when editing is already finished.
  • If they aren't particularly good at spelling, or don't know grammar, or aren't detail-oriented enough to find someone else's small mistakes.
  • If they start swapping out your words for fancier-sounding synonyms, or changing the voice and sound of your essay in other ways. A proofreader is there to check for errors, not to take the 17-year-old out of your writing.

What Do Colleges Think of Your Getting Help With Your Essay?

Admissions officers agree: light editing and proofreading are good—even required ! But they also want to make sure you're the one doing the work on your essay. They want essays with stories, voice, and themes that come from you. They want to see work that reflects your actual writing ability, and that focuses on what you find important.

On the Importance of Editing

Get feedback. Have a fresh pair of eyes give you some feedback. Don't allow someone else to rewrite your essay, but do take advantage of others' edits and opinions when they seem helpful. ( Bates College )

Read your essay aloud to someone. Reading the essay out loud offers a chance to hear how your essay sounds outside your head. This exercise reveals flaws in the essay's flow, highlights grammatical errors and helps you ensure that you are communicating the exact message you intended. ( Dickinson College )

On the Value of Proofreading

Share your essays with at least one or two people who know you well—such as a parent, teacher, counselor, or friend—and ask for feedback. Remember that you ultimately have control over your essays, and your essays should retain your own voice, but others may be able to catch mistakes that you missed and help suggest areas to cut if you are over the word limit. Proofread and then ask someone else to proofread for you. Although we want substance, we also want to be able to see that you can write a paper for our professors and avoid careless mistakes that would drive them crazy. ( Oberlin College )

On Watching Out for Too Much Outside Influence

Limit the number of people who review your essay. Too much input usually means your voice is lost in the writing style. ( Carleton College )

Ask for input (but not too much). Your parents, friends, guidance counselors, coaches, and teachers are great people to bounce ideas off of for your essay. They know how unique and spectacular you are, and they can help you decide how to articulate it. Keep in mind, however, that a 45-year-old lawyer writes quite differently from an 18-year-old student, so if your dad ends up writing the bulk of your essay, we're probably going to notice. Now let's talk about some potential people to approach for your college essay editing and proofreading needs. It's best to start close to home and slowly expand outward. Not only are your family and friends more invested in your success than strangers, but they also have a better handle on your interests and personality. This knowledge is key for judging whether your essay is expressing your true self.

Parents or Close Relatives

Your family may be full of potentially excellent editors! Parents are deeply committed to your well-being, and family members know you and your life well enough to offer details or incidents that can be included in your essay. On the other hand, the rewriting process necessarily involves criticism, which is sometimes hard to hear from someone very close to you.

A parent or close family member is a great choice for an editor if you can answer "yes" to the following questions. Is your parent or close relative a good writer or reader? Do you have a relationship where editing your essay won't create conflict? Are you able to constructively listen to criticism and suggestion from the parent?

One suggestion for defusing face-to-face discussions is to try working on the essay over email. Send your parent a draft, have them write you back some comments, and then you can pick which of their suggestions you want to use and which to discard.

Teachers or Tutors

A humanities teacher that you have a good relationship with is a great choice. I am purposefully saying humanities, and not just English, because teachers of Philosophy, History, Anthropology, and any other classes where you do a lot of writing, are all used to reviewing student work.

Moreover, any teacher or tutor that has been working with you for some time, knows you very well and can vet the essay to make sure it "sounds like you."

If your teacher or tutor has some experience with what college essays are supposed to be like, ask them to be your editor. If not, then ask whether they have time to proofread your final draft.

Guidance or College Counselor at Your School

The best thing about asking your counselor to edit your work is that this is their job. This means that they have a very good sense of what colleges are looking for in an application essay.

At the same time, school counselors tend to have relationships with admissions officers in many colleges, which again gives them insight into what works and which college is focused on what aspect of the application.

Unfortunately, in many schools the guidance counselor tends to be way overextended. If your ratio is 300 students to 1 college counselor, you're unlikely to get that person's undivided attention and focus. It is still useful to ask them for general advice about your potential topics, but don't expect them to be able to stay with your essay from first draft to final version.

Friends, Siblings, or Classmates

Although they most likely don't have much experience with what colleges are hoping to see, your peers are excellent sources for checking that your essay is you .

Friends and siblings are perfect for the read-aloud edit. Read your essay to them so they can listen for words and phrases that are stilted, pompous, or phrases that just don't sound like you.

You can even trade essays and give helpful advice on each other's work.

If your editor hasn't worked with college admissions essays very much, no worries! Any astute and attentive reader can still greatly help with your process. But, as in all things, beginners do better with some preparation.

First, your editor should read our advice about how to write a college essay introduction , how to spot and fix a bad college essay , and get a sense of what other students have written by going through some admissions essays that worked .

Then, as they read your essay, they can work through the following series of questions that will help them to guide you.

Introduction Questions

  • Is the first sentence a killer opening line? Why or why not?
  • Does the introduction hook the reader? Does it have a colorful, detailed, and interesting narrative? Or does it propose a compelling or surprising idea?
  • Can you feel the author's voice in the introduction, or is the tone dry, dull, or overly formal? Show the places where the voice comes through.

Essay Body Questions

  • Does the essay have a through-line? Is it built around a central argument, thought, idea, or focus? Can you put this idea into your own words?
  • How is the essay organized? By logical progression? Chronologically? Do you feel order when you read it, or are there moments where you are confused or lose the thread of the essay?
  • Does the essay have both narratives about the author's life and explanations and insight into what these stories reveal about the author's character, personality, goals, or dreams? If not, which is missing?
  • Does the essay flow? Are there smooth transitions/clever links between paragraphs? Between the narrative and moments of insight?

Reader Response Questions

  • Does the writer's personality come through? Do we know what the speaker cares about? Do we get a sense of "who he or she is"?
  • Where did you feel most connected to the essay? Which parts of the essay gave you a "you are there" sensation by invoking your senses? What moments could you picture in your head well?
  • Where are the details and examples vague and not specific enough?
  • Did you get an "a-ha!" feeling anywhere in the essay? Is there a moment of insight that connected all the dots for you? Is there a good reveal or "twist" anywhere in the essay?
  • What are the strengths of this essay? What needs the most improvement?

Should You Pay Money for Essay Editing?

One alternative to asking someone you know to help you with your college essay is the paid editor route. There are two different ways to pay for essay help: a private essay coach or a less personal editing service , like the many proliferating on the internet.

My advice is to think of these options as a last resort rather than your go-to first choice. I'll first go through the reasons why. Then, if you do decide to go with a paid editor, I'll help you decide between a coach and a service.

When to Consider a Paid Editor

In general, I think hiring someone to work on your essay makes a lot of sense if none of the people I discussed above are a possibility for you.

If you can't ask your parents. For example, if your parents aren't good writers, or if English isn't their first language. Or if you think getting your parents to help is going create unnecessary extra conflict in your relationship with them (applying to college is stressful as it is!)

If you can't ask your teacher or tutor. Maybe you don't have a trusted teacher or tutor that has time to look over your essay with focus. Or, for instance, your favorite humanities teacher has very limited experience with college essays and so won't know what admissions officers want to see.

If you can't ask your guidance counselor. This could be because your guidance counselor is way overwhelmed with other students.

If you can't share your essay with those who know you. It might be that your essay is on a very personal topic that you're unwilling to share with parents, teachers, or peers. Just make sure it doesn't fall into one of the bad-idea topics in our article on bad college essays .

If the cost isn't a consideration. Many of these services are quite expensive, and private coaches even more so. If you have finite resources, I'd say that hiring an SAT or ACT tutor (whether it's PrepScholar or someone else) is better way to spend your money . This is because there's no guarantee that a slightly better essay will sufficiently elevate the rest of your application, but a significantly higher SAT score will definitely raise your applicant profile much more.

Should You Hire an Essay Coach?

On the plus side, essay coaches have read dozens or even hundreds of college essays, so they have experience with the format. Also, because you'll be working closely with a specific person, it's more personal than sending your essay to a service, which will know even less about you.

But, on the minus side, you'll still be bouncing ideas off of someone who doesn't know that much about you . In general, if you can adequately get the help from someone you know, there is no advantage to paying someone to help you.

If you do decide to hire a coach, ask your school counselor, or older students that have used the service for recommendations. If you can't afford the coach's fees, ask whether they can work on a sliding scale —many do. And finally, beware those who guarantee admission to your school of choice—essay coaches don't have any special magic that can back up those promises.

Should You Send Your Essay to a Service?

On the plus side, essay editing services provide a similar product to essay coaches, and they cost significantly less . If you have some assurance that you'll be working with a good editor, the lack of face-to-face interaction won't prevent great results.

On the minus side, however, it can be difficult to gauge the quality of the service before working with them . If they are churning through many application essays without getting to know the students they are helping, you could end up with an over-edited essay that sounds just like everyone else's. In the worst case scenario, an unscrupulous service could send you back a plagiarized essay.

Getting recommendations from friends or a school counselor for reputable services is key to avoiding heavy-handed editing that writes essays for you or does too much to change your essay. Including a badly-edited essay like this in your application could cause problems if there are inconsistencies. For example, in interviews it might be clear you didn't write the essay, or the skill of the essay might not be reflected in your schoolwork and test scores.

Should You Buy an Essay Written by Someone Else?

Let me elaborate. There are super sketchy places on the internet where you can simply buy a pre-written essay. Don't do this!

For one thing, you'll be lying on an official, signed document. All college applications make you sign a statement saying something like this:

I certify that all information submitted in the admission process—including the application, the personal essay, any supplements, and any other supporting materials—is my own work, factually true, and honestly presented... I understand that I may be subject to a range of possible disciplinary actions, including admission revocation, expulsion, or revocation of course credit, grades, and degree, should the information I have certified be false. (From the Common Application )

For another thing, if your academic record doesn't match the essay's quality, the admissions officer will start thinking your whole application is riddled with lies.

Admission officers have full access to your writing portion of the SAT or ACT so that they can compare work that was done in proctored conditions with that done at home. They can tell if these were written by different people. Not only that, but there are now a number of search engines that faculty and admission officers can use to see if an essay contains strings of words that have appeared in other essays—you have no guarantee that the essay you bought wasn't also bought by 50 other students.

Yesterday my friend Lars had his birthday. I went to house's Lars at 2 o' clock. Then Lars' friends are coming to his house. On 2:10 a.m. there is all friends of Lars coming. The friends are Runz, Tom, Vanessa, Paula, Raphael, me, and Ida. Then we go to blacklight minigolf. Lars' parents make 2 teams while we are 8 children. I was in the team with Lars, Runz, and Tom. when we finished mini golf, we counted the points. Unfortunately, the other team won. Then we eat Cake. The cake was delicious. Then we go to laser maze. That was a game where you weren't allowed to touch the lasers. Then we ate pizza. It was very very cool.

Just like the saying goes” Yesterdays are memories”, the time once gone is gone. It is how well we spend time and what productive work we could do that counts each day and marks a great difference in our yesterdays.

For the present we might not think, but later when we think of the past, we think, we could have done it in a better way. Infact, yesterdays are guidelines for our tomorrows.

To make this clearer, I could explain how I spent my yesterday, the whole day. Morning I woke up, brushed my teeth, took a shower, got myself fresh and came to the breakfast table along with my parents.

Mom had made a lovely breakfast and we all enjoyed the hot toasts she made. Since yesterday was a holiday, I thought I would spent time with my friends and I went over to my friends place after breakfast. There we played a lot and enjoyed and some of his other friends also joined us later for playing. We played for quite some time until we were all tired and exhausted. We then took a break had some cold drinks that his Mom gave us and we went our ways back home.

Back at home, Mom had prepared yummy lunch for me and after taking a shower, I had my lunch. Since I was too tired I slept off. When I woke up, it was almost tea time. Mom had made hot crunchy snacks and I enjoyed them, with a cup of hot milk and we sat and talked for some time.

Later, I sat to do my homework and did some studies that I had to complete. When I was done with my work, Dad came home from work. After he got fresh, we sat together and played some indoor games and talked about the day events for all of us. By then it was dinner time and Mom served dinner for us.

We had, talked and laughed about general talks, and spent some time. Later we cleaned the dishes, said a family prayer and it was time for me to go to bed. I wished my parents Goodnight and had a wonderful sleep. When the day is good, it feels like being blessed and great.

What did you do yesterday?? Yesterday, I slept late night, so I woke up around 10:30 A.M. Then as usual brush my teeth and took a bath and had strong cup of tea. At after then I got call from my friend, he inviting me for the shopping. I accepted and we both went to C.P.(Connaught place). We both were enjoying a lot. When I come back to my home, it was too late. So I prepared my dinner and I have it and got back to bed for sleep.

Yesterday I woke up at 8am then i did my usual activities freshning up and all that.As I had to appear for the interview the same day at 11 am so i got dressed n after having my breakfast I went to metro station to reach the venue for interview.I had appeared for the interview of Genpact(BPO Co.)and I was through till four rounds but I couldnt clear the fifth round. I was a little bit of disappointed but since it was my first interview as a fresher I got an overview of what is asked during interviews and the fields where I was lacking. Yesterday was quite a bus schedule for me..I got up in the early morning at 4AM and took a glass of fresh water as it provides freshness for the whole day then I washed my face and eyes with water and got ready for a daily routine morning walk as it is must to keep our body fit and healthy. Using the “What did you do Yesterday? (Past Irregular Verbs)” song in class

This is a great song for practicing using the past simple tense with some common irregular verbs.

NOTE: This lesson should be taught after the past regular verbs lesson .

  • Review past tense regular verbs – “Spin the Bottle” game . Your students will have covered some regular verbs using the past tense form in a previous lesson .  Let’s begin this lesson with a review of these by playing a fun game of “Spin the Bottle”.  Have everyone sit in a circle.  The teacher starts by spinning a plastic bottle in the middle of the circle.  Whoever the bottle points at when it stops spinning is shown one the regular verbs flashcards (from the previous lesson) – make sure no one else sees the flashcard.  That student must then say “Yesterday I …” and act out the verb on the card. Everyone has to guess what he/she is doing and shout out the correct verb in the past tense (E.g. “jumped in puddles”).  Play until you have practiced all of the verbs on the cards.
  • Review the structure “Yesterday, I verb+ed “ . On the board, draw a vertical line down the middle, dividing the board into two equal halves.  Stick the regular verb flashcards from the spin the bottle game onto the left-half of the board.  Tell your students you are going to ask each person “What did you do yesterday?” and they have to give an answer using one of the verb flashcards on the board using “Yesterday, I …” and their answer must be true.  Go around the class and get everyone to give you an answer.  Also, ask at least one extra question to each student (e.g. “What did you watch on TV?”).

Next, on the right-side of the board draw 12 circles.  Students will be sticking the flashcards inside the circles, so make them just big enough to fit the cards inside.  Under each circle write verbs as follows:

  • wake up – woke up
  • eat my breakfast – ate my breakfast
  • drink my milk – drank my milk
  • go to school – went to school
  • sing a song – sang a song
  • swim in the pool – swam in the pool
  • have fun – had fun
  • come back home – came back home
  • ride my bike – rode my bike
  • do my homework – did my homework
  • put on my pajamas – put on my pajamas
  • sleep all night – slept all night

Invite a student up with one of their flashcards and ask him/her to place it into the correct circle on the board – their team-mates can help.  A lot of the vocabulary will have been studied in previous lessons so your students should be able to get the correct answer for most of the circles – if not, you can help by saying “no, try again” until the student has stuck the card into the correct circle.  Keep going until all of the flashcards have been stuck on the board in the circles.

Next, chorus each verb three times (e.g. Teacher: “wake up, woke up”, Students “wake up, woke up” … 2 more times).  Don’t worry at this stage if your students understand why there are two versions of each verb – we’ll come to that next.

Finally, write the word “Yesterday” at the top of the board and draw a red circle around it (or a different color to the color of the word) and chorus “Yesterday”.  Point at the first flashcard and say “Yeserday, I wake up.  Is that ok?  Wake up?”.  Try and get someone to say the correct form “ Woke up”.  Circle the word “woke” in red (to signify this is the correct form of the verb to use with the word “Yesterday”).  Now go through all of the remaining verbs asking your students which is the correct form and circling the past tense version in red.

First round: Put students in pairs.  Start by modeling the activity with another student and both sit looking at the board.  Teacher starts by saying the infinitive form of a verb and his/her partner has to say the past form with the phrase “Yesterday, I …”, for example:

Teacher: drink my milk . Student: Yesterday, I drank my milk . Teacher: ride my bike . Student: Yesterday, I rode my bike.

Once everyone understands what to do, have the pairs go through all of the verbs, changing roles after all the verbs have been practiced so both get the chance to say the past forms.

Second round: Keep everyone in the same pairs, however one student must sit with their back to the board.  Students do the same thing but the student with his/her back to the board must try and remember the correct past tense form – their partners can help if they get stuck.  Again, change roles.  Once finished, get everyone to find a new partner and try again, one with their back to the board.

  • Play “Past Tense Charades” in small groups . Start by modeling: look at the flashcards on the board (including the regular verbs on the left-side) and do an action or gesture.  Elicit what you are doing using the structure “Yesterday, I …” (e.g. “Yesterday, I kicked a ball”, “Yesterday, I slept all night”).  Then put everyone in small groups of 3 or 4.  One person in each group starts by acting out a verb and the other members have to shout out the correct answer using the structure “Yesterday, I …”.  The first person in the group to say the correct answer can do the next action.  Continue until each group has completed actions for all of the verbs.

Next, give everyone a verb flashcard (use all the irregular verbs first).  Explain that each time you pass the balloon you have to ask “What did you do yesterday?” and when you receive the balloon you have to say “I (ate my breakfast)” depending on the flashcard you have been given.  Both teams race, passing the balloon and saying the structures.  You can play other rounds with different rules, such as:

  • teams must pass the balloon without using their hands (e.g. under chins, between knees, etc.)
  • teams can only tap the balloons – they can’t hold them in any way
  • teams have to kick or head the balloons but not hold
  • Sing “What did you do Yesterday?” . The first time you play the song, put up the What did you do Yesterday? song poster on the board. Quickly elicit the vocab. Play the song and sing along doing the gestures, as described above in “Gestures and activities to use with What did you do Yesterday? (Past Irregular Verbs)“. Play 2 or 3 times.
  • Do the “ What did you do yesterday? ” worksheet .  Give out the worksheets and have everyone draw and write about what they did yesterday – make sure everyone understands that these are their true answers.  Circulate as everyone is working away, and ask lots of questions (e.g. What’s this?, What did you do yesterday?  Did you ride your bike?, etc.).  When everyone has finished, go around the class asking everybody to tell you some things they did yesterday.

Next, invite one person to volunteer to be blindfolded.  Once the blindfold is on, spin him/her around in the middle of the circle and then tell him/her to go forward and ask the person they first bump into “What did you do yesterday?”.  That person needs to answer the question, based on his/her flashcard.  However, s/he can speak in a funny voice to avoid being identified.  Then the blindfolded person must guess who it is.  Play so that everyone has a turn to be blindfolded.

  • Set Homework: For homework, give out the “ Past Irregular Verbs ” worksheet.

What Is Simple Past Tense?

Mostly, you can use the simple past tense by taking the root form of the verb (its infinitive form without “to”) and adding “-ed” at the end. However, when dealing with an irregular form, you must learn the correct past simple form by heart for each verb, as you can’t use the same formula for regular verbs.

The simple past is an English verb tense used to describe an action that started and finished in the past. Whether it was the day before yesterday or a hundred years ago, it can be used to describe any time in mind. It is not to be confused with past continuous, a tense that describes past events that occurred over a longer period.

Here’s a great example that illustrates the difference between the two:

  • Past simple: We got home just in time for dinner.
  • Past continuous: My sister was writing her homework.

How Do You Make Simple Past Tense?

The simple past tense takes the verb’s root and adds “-ed” at the end. For example, here are some strong verbs in their simple past tense:

  • Walk – walked
  • Start – started
  • Play – played

However, keep in mind that the above rule only works if the verb is regular.

Irregular verbs don’t adhere to the same tense rules regarding past tense and participle. Sadly, each irregular verb is different, and people who want to master the English language will have to learn the forms of each verb. As a writer, this was a key skill for me to master, but it’s important for everyday use as well.

Common Irregular Verbs in the Past Tense

As mentioned earlier, irregular verbs don’t follow the same tense rules as regular ones. There are roughly 200 irregular verbs in the English language. I know, crazy, right?

Here are some simple past tense examples of irregular verbs:

  • Awake – awoke
  • Blow – blew
  • Become – became
  • Cut – cut
  • Drink – drank
  • Forgive – forgave
  • Grow – grew
  • Keep – kept
  • Make – made
  • Read – read
  • Sing – sang
  • Stand – stood
  • Think – thought

Why We Use the Simple Past

I use simple past to talk about finished actions. I made a few examples that show how to use it:

  • When you need to talk about something that happened and have a time frame (this morning, yesterday, two years ago, etc.)
  • When you need to talk about something that happened in the distant past (“Thomas Edison invented the light bulb.”)
  • When you’ve used another tense and want to introduce a finished action (“I’ve been studying Spanish for eight years. Last year, I went to Spain.”)
  • When you’re looking to describe a list of events and can use the past continuous for the background (“We went to a restaurant. People were having a good time while music was playing in the background.”)

Simple Past Tense Rule

Making the simple past tense for regular verbs is very easy. Just take the infinitive form of the verb (minus “to”) and add “-ed” as a suffix.

The rules are straightforward if you want to ask a question using the simple past tense. The formula for asking questions in the past tense is: did + subject + verb root.

For example:

  • Did your brother finish his homework last night?
  • Did you have a good time?
  • Where did the dog run off to?
  • How did you manage to finish everything in time?
  • Why didn’t you ask for help?

If you want to form the simple past negative, simply use “did not” + the verb’s root. Thankfully, the same rule applies to both regular and irregular verbs.

Here are some negative past simple sentences:

  • He missed the test because he didn’t wake up in time.
  • You didn’t take the garbage out this morning, did you?
  • I didn’t expect the temperature to be this low in September.

If you need to form a negative sentence using the verb “to be,” you don’t have to add the auxiliary “did.” For sentences that have singular subjects, you can use “was not.” For plural subjects, the correct form is “were not.”

Some examples I can think of:

  • I was not happy with the outcome./I wasn’t happy with the outcome.
  • She was not there when I needed her the most./She wasn’t there at a time when I needed her the most.
  • We were not ready to leave the competition empty-handed./We weren’t ready to leave the competition empty-handed

Final Thoughts

I use the simple past tense when describing actions from the past. They could be things you did yesterday, two months ago, or back in 1971. While it’s easy to learn how to form and use the simple past tense, irregular verbs don’t follow the same rules, and you should learn the individual forms for as many as you can.

What Did You Do Last Weekend? IELTS Speaking (10 Example Answers)

In part one of your IELTS Speaking test, the examiner might ask you a past tense question like, “What did you do last weekend?”

Let’s look at the best way to answer this question, with 10 example answers ( go straight to the answers here ).

Use Past Tense Verbs

If the examiner asks you any past tense questions, they want to know if you can hear past tense questions, and use past tense verbs in your answer.

The best way to answer is simply to say what you did last weekend. Keep it simple, and describe what you did.

Because it’s part one, you don’t need to use advanced vocabulary or grammar. Just focus on fluency : answer as quickly as you can, without hesitation.

Very simple English is fine. Just make sure that your past tense is good.

Remember Your Weekend, and Picture It

In the exam, you might feel nervous and you might be thinking too much about grammar and vocabulary and not making mistakes.

Here’s a good way to relax and focus on communicating: picture what you did last weekend; see it in your mind’s eye.

Then simply describe what you’re remembering.

Try to do this for all your IELTS Speaking questions. Picturing a memory makes it easy to think of things to say.

Grammar Tip: How to Improve Your Past Tense

For students from some countries, the past tense can be difficult to remember. But for IELTS and all English communication, good past tense is 100 percent necessary.  

Here are two excellent ways to improve your past tense, and make it an easy habit for you.

1. Write a Super-Simple Journal

Get a notebook and pen. And every day, for just five minutes, write a few sentences about what you did yesterday.  

These can be quite simple sentences, such as:

Yesterday morning, I woke up at about seven am and had a shower. I ate cereal for breakfast and then caught the metro to work…

If you’re more advanced, you can make your sentences more interesting, with various past tenses, for example:

Last night, I was hanging out with my friends when someone called me. It was the client from work who I had met the previous week. He needed help with something…

It doesn’t matter if you make simple or complex sentences. The only important thing is that you use good past tense and you do it every day.

If you continue this habit for a month, you’ll see amazing improvements in your past tense.  

2. Ask Yourself Past Tense Questions Aloud

On a piece of paper, write about ten simple past tense questions, like:

  •   What did you do this morning?
  •   What did you do last night?
  •   What did you do last weekend?
  •   And more like this

Stick that piece of paper on your bedroom wall, or on your fridge, where it’s easy to see.

Every time you walk past that piece of paper, stop for a moment and ask one of the questions out loud to yourself. Then answer it out loud. Imagine you’re having a real conversation.

This is another way to build an excellent past tense habit.

Let’s look at some good example answers for this question about what you did last weekend.

With Family

1. Last weekend, I spent a lot of time with my wife and child. It was sunny, so we went to the park and played a game of frisbee. And in the evening, I cooked a meal of noodles and beef.  

2. On Saturday, I went shopping with my sister. We bought some clothes and had lunch at a sushi restaurant in the mall. It was a lot of fun. On Sunday, I just stayed at home doing housework and watching TV.

3. I had to work last weekend because it’s the end of the year and we have to close up all our accounts. So I didn’t have any free time last weekend, only overtime for work.  

4. On Friday night, I went to the cinema with my boyfriend to watch a movie. It was a really inspiring, uplifting romantic comedy. I loved it. On Saturday and Sunday, we were mostly relaxing at home.

5. I had two days off work last weekend, so I played soccer with my friends on both mornings. And in the afternoon, I went to the gym to work out.  

Computer Games

6. A couple of my friends came over last weekend, and we spend al of Saturday playing computer games on my Xbox. After that, we ate pizza and watched anime movies online.

7. I had to do lots of homework last weekend. It was mostly math and science exercises. I didn’t have any free time to enjoy myself.

8. I did what I do every weekend. I had a few English classes, online and at the English center. And I had two yoga classes as well. It was a good weekend, and I had a nice time.

Weekend Away

9. I went on a quick weekend trip to Payar Island last weekend. I spent two days swimming in the sea and sunbathing on the beach. It was a wonderful mini-vacation, and it really helped me unwind.

10. I’m an entrepreneur, so I don’t really have any days off. I was busy working on my business last weekend. I had to meet three suppliers and complete a few purchase orders.
