I welcome everyone to LMS platform, where one can be enlightened on the Vigyan Jyoti project, a flagship initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India and implemented by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. The LMS has a well-planned information architecture, designed and developed by IBM India and American India Foundation (AIF) with inputs from the Vigyan Jyoti Team. I am confident that in using the LMS, all the stakeholders of Vigyan Jyoti would be able to engage in sound academic learning besides finding relevant solutions to their queries. The smooth facilitation of this platform is the collaborative effort of the technical team at IBM India and AIF, with the support from the Vigyan Jyoti Team at NVS Headquarters. I urge one and all to profit from this platform, being a part of this unique program in the country that aims to provide a fillip to the meritorious girls to pursue higher studies and careers in underrepresented areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).

The contribution of women in science and technology is immensely important to broaden the perspectives and areas explored by researchers, allowing for greater potential for innovations and new discoveries. Vigyan Jyoti is an initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India to encourage girls to build careers in the under-represented areas of STEM in the top institutions by creating a level-playing field for them. It is a great pleasure to see the active participation of girl students under the Vigyan Jyoti Programme which will create the next- gen women leadership and role models in STEM. The Department of Science and Technology is not only a nodal body for various policy matters in Science & Technology domain and promoting cutting edge research to develop high- end technologies, but also endeavouring to nurture, groom, and attract students and young researchers in the S&T domain. In the last few years, we have developed and implemented several women- centric initiatives under the umbrella scheme ‘Women in Science and Engineering-KIRAN (WISE-KIRAN)’ which are paving the way for Women Scientists to achieve Atmanirbharta in S&T. The Department of Science and Technology (DST) has several women centric initiatives under the umbrella scheme “Women in Science and Engineering-KIRAN (WISE-KIRAN)” to provide different kind of opportunities to the women in Science and Technology domain. The programmes under WISE-KIRAN scheme promote STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics) career amongst women and address various challenges being faced by them. Vigyan Jyoti is the recent and most ambitious program to encourage young girls to pursue STEM education as a field of their choice. Vigyan Jyoti aims to achieve this goal through mentoring and training of the young girls in STEM with the ultimate goal to bring gender parity in underrepresented STEM fields. I am delighted to present a dedicated web portal for Vigyan Jyoti programme which not only acts as a centralized repository for cataloguing the past and upcoming activities and connecting all beneficiaries in the form of Learning Management System (LMS) but also provide the essence of initiatives planned under Vigyan Jyoti. The portal will serve to provide a valuable platform for the exchange of information by allowing the collection of data from diverse sources. I am confident that the portal will provide a great learning experience to the students under Vigyan Jyoti and empower them with self-learning at their own pace. I wish the programme to achieve new milestones for times to come and make the beneficiary girls the future role model in STEM fields.

IBM is committed to and has always been at the forefront of investing in the empowerment of the students to make them future-ready and increase the global talent pool. As part of this commitment, IBM has partnered with Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) as an extension to IBM’s flagship programme “STEM for Girl’s “running in 11 states to create a robust STEM ecosystem that creates critical thinkers, problem-solvers, and next-generation innovators in the country. Through this partnership, IBM along with its national implementation partner, American India Foundation aims to bolster the implementation of Vigyan Jyoti programme running successfully in 100 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas reaching 10,000 girl students across the country.

The objective is to encourage and prosper innovative engineers to become designers. They are taken through the design process through hands-on work, ideally ending up in a sell-able product/service.  At DIC Vigyan Ashram we offer:

• Immersion in the art of design  environment, where design thinking and the joy of design appreciation is promoted.

As per the hub center  Savitribai Phule Pune University  (SPPU), the following 4 courses are being offered at Vigyan Ashram:

• Advanced and innovative techniques for environment and watershed management.
• Advanced techniques for improvement of plant growth.
• Design and Development of Signal Conditioning and Sensor Technology.
• Diploma in computer aided product design.

How courses are conducted?

• Each course has been decided into many modules that are planned to span the course duration.
• Knowledge gathering by online videos, interesting papers, etc.
• Practical skill development through hands on practice.
• Documentation of the learning experience on blog.
• Commitment of both parties to finish the project at high quality level.
• A realistic experience for the student.
• Building up of contacts and design profile for the student.
• Earning for the student as well as low cost design and development service for the clients.
• A major project is assigned with the objective that the design student will make a commercial product/service out of it.
• Mentors from industry and academia are invited to interact with students. This happens each week.

The Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs, Arun Jaitley said that dynamic nature of the Indian economy and availability of technology tools has impacted the functioning of all the Departments including the nature of Tax Administration.

The Finance Minister said that there are two major challenges before the Customs Administration today which include that of trade facilitation and sharp detection & enforcement to avoid any tax evasion. Jaitley said that there is also a challenge to keep a balance between these two dichotomic functions where the experience of tax authorities come to their rescue.

The Finance Minister, Jaitley was addressing the august gathering of senior officers and staff of the Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC) along with other dignitaries on the occasion of the ‘Investiture Ceremony 2018’ and ‘International Customs Day 2018’ in Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi today. The Finance Minister, Jaitley expressed confidence that CBEC would take necessary steps to ensure that India’s ranking in trade across borders would improve substantially. On the occasion, the Finance Minister, Jaitley also released two IT tools of the Customs Department i.e. ICETRAK, and ICETAB, developed by the CBEC to provide an easy way for trade to track their consignments and for providing other important information and updates. Earlier, the Minister of State for Finance, Shiv Pratap Shukla, in his address complimented the role of Customs in implementing GST in record time, in securing our international borders and for facilitating trade and international passengers at airports. The Finance Secretary, Dr. Hasmukh Adhia congratulated the Department for smooth implementation of GST and adoption of new technology. He underlined the important role of Customs in further improving the nation’s ranking in trading across borders while appreciating the enhanced adoption of technology and keeping a pace with latest technology in their business processes. P.K. Das, Member (Customs), Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), also spoke about the thrust on enhancing trade facilitation and the role of other stakeholders including participating Government agencies. Sunil Kumar Sawhney, Chief Commissioner of Customs, Delhi Customs Zone, presented the vote of thanks.

International Customs Day celebrations were organised by the Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC). The Union Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley was the Chief Guest on the occasion while the Union Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla was the Guest of Honour. The Finance Secretary Dr. Hasmukh Adhia, and Ms. Vanaja N. Sarna, Special Secretary to Government of India and Chairperson, Central Board of Excise and Customs (CBEC), along with the Members of CBEC, senior officers of CBEC, various other Departments of the Government and foreign dignitaries were present. Presidential Award of Appreciation Certificates and World Customs Organization (WCO) Certificate of Merit Award were also presented to the distinguished officers and staff of the CBEC.

Earlier, Ms Vanaja N. Sarna, Chairperson, CBEC welcomed the dignitaries and highlighted the recent Key Initiatives taken by Customs for enhancing trade facilitation in line with the Action Plan for implementing the Trade Facilitation Agreement of the WTO ratified by India and in alignment with ease of doing business at the highest levels of government.

Presidential Award of Appreciation Certificate was awarded to 40 officers and staff of Indian Customs for  “Specially Distinguished Record of Service.”  These officers and staff were selected on the basis of their exemplary performance in their respective field of services over the years. The Awardees selected this year include officers from all cadres of the Service, who have consistently performed with distinction in their various assignments, including prevention of smuggling, detection of tax evasion, detection of trade based money laundering and foreign exchange violations, besides contributions in tax policy formulation, revenue mobilization, and automation of business processes, and capacity building and training among others.
