Nath VarmaDirectorMauritius Institute of Education ii Health and Physical Education (HPE)Health and Physical Education is offered to all pupils at the primary level. The key emphasis of thecurriculum is to provide pupils with knowledge and skills to empower them to take care of their ownhealth and the health of others, as well as the environment. Pupils are provided with anunderstanding of good health practices and habits pertaining to nutrition, physical exercises andhygiene, thus, contributing to their positive physical growth and health. The success of the curriculumwould be determined by pupils taking health enhancing decisions, practising good health habitsand exhibiting socially responsible behaviours. This pupil’s workbook provides a series of instructions for the Health and Physical Education syllabusof the Primary School. It covers topics/activities on “Healthy Eating / Food Safety”, “Substance useand abuse” and “Balances/Kids Athletics, Mini football and Mini handball”. A variety of learningexperiences have been presented to the pupils and it is equally important that pupils apply whatthey have learnt in this domain.A note to teacherTo enable meaningful learning to take place in the classroom, it is recommended that teachersemploy a variety of teaching approaches that would suit the different learning styles and abilities oftheir pupils. This book contains a variety of activities for children to learn and to probe further so as to enrichthemselves. All activities are simple, need very little resources and are related to everyday life context. The activitiesproposed will help learners to discover and investigate concepts for themselves in an engaging way.It is expected that teachers use the integrated approach as well as infuse concepts such as interculturalvalues, safety and scientific knowledge while they are teaching the concepts.Assessment is in-built throughout the units. At the end of each unit, an evaluation sheet is providedto check whether learning outcomes have been met.We sincerely hope that this workbook will help and encourage our pupils to learn and practise goodhealth habits, thus keeping them fit and healthy.iii TABLE OF CONTENTPART A Health EducationUnit 1 HEALTHY EATING / FOOD SAFETY 1Unit 2 SUBSTANCE USE AND ABUSE 23Unit 3 CARING FOR MY BODY AND GROWING UP 39Unit 4 SAFETY AND INJURY PREVENTION 63PART B Physical EducationUnit 1 BALANCES / KIDS ATHLETICS 81Unit 2 MANIPULATIVE 93 - Mini Football - Mini Handball - Racket Games iv PART A Health Education 1.
