MOM Movie Review: Sridevi in a film still

MOM has other assets, too, not the least of which is the outstanding quality of the performances that first-time director Ravi Udyawar extracts from his cast. Add to that cinematographer Anay Goswamy's adroit lensing and lighting, and you have a film that is consistently compelling. The visual compositions, an evocative interplay of light and shadows, create the palpable crevices of darkness where evil is afoot and resolute acts of defiance are plotted and executed. If there is any major grouse one has with MOM , it is with the editing. It's overly indulgent. The result: the film is 15 minutes too long. Be that as it may, MOM is what Maatr , Raveena Tandon's comeback vehicle released earlier this year, wasn't: relevant, riveting and oddly rousing despite its grim theme.

Where else could a story of a sexual assault and its bitter aftermath be set but in Delhi. However, the city isn't a mere backdrop here - it assumes a life of its own and serves as a milieu in which a culture of impunity thrives and where no woman is safe. While the film ventures into the nooks and crannies of the metropolis to capture its many divides, moral and social, the screenplay (Girish Kohli) steers clear of sensationalism. The director gets the Valentine's Day abduction and gang rape sequences out of the way quickly and without gloating over the outrageous nature of the incident. The sense of shock stems from the way the survivor is shoved into a gutter and left to die in the city's sludge - the camera that watches the SUV carrying the perpetrators from overhead moves closer to the lifeless girl and stops short of providing the audience an extreme close-up view. We see her next in a hospital bed dangling between life and death as her mother struggles to make sense of what has just happened to her daughter. The girl's businessman father Anand Sabharwal (Adnan Siddiqui) cuts short a New York trip and rushes back home. A top-notch Crime Branch cop Matthew Francis (Akshaye Khanna) is given charge of the case. The four perpetrators are quickly rounded up and a chargesheet is filed. A private detective (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) offers unsolicited help to the distressed mother.

mom

MOM Movie Review: Akshaye Khanna and Nawazuddin Siddiqui in a film still

A fast-track court is set up to hear the case, the girl records her statement before the judge via video-conferencing and the parents are hopeful of a favourable verdict. But as it transpires, the criminals are let off owing to the lack of sufficient circumstantial evidence. The gutted mother's faith in the police and the law takes a beating. Devki decides, with the help of the sleuth she had shooed away earlier, to punish the men who violated her daughter. From here on, MOM assumes the form of a thriller centered on a woman out to settle scores with a bunch of dangerous men. From a conscientious schoolteacher, she mutates into a law-breaker.

While sticking to the established conventions of the genre, MOM finds just enough space to focus on a slew of human relationships. Even the minor ones, like Devki's bonding with two of transgender ex-students who repay their debt to her when she needs it the most or the detective's barely expressed love for his confident, outspoken daughter (who is seen in only one-and-a-half scenes), contribute meaningfully to the plot. Much of MOM is filmed on actual locations and its characters are believable. The police officer, for one, isn't a swaggering, smooth-talking gunslinger bent upon asserting his masculinity. Akshaye Khanna slips into the skin of this man with minimum fuss and delivers a performance that makes us wonder why we do not see more of him. Nawazuddin Siddiqui's darkly humorous gumshoe is among the more intriguing men that you would have seen in a Hindi film in recent years. Daya Shankar Kapoor, "DK for short", isn't a smug operator. His deadpan witticisms keep him - and the film - going as he attends to the risky job of ferreting out info for Devki.

Mom Movie Review: We Need More Moms Like Devaki In India Where Rape Is Epidemic

We need more devakis to protect our daughters in a society which is not safe for women and a paradise for rapists..

mom movie review behindwoods

Star Cast: Sridevi, Akshaye Khanna, Adnan Siddiqui, Sajal Ali, Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Director: Ravi Udyawar

mom movie review behindwoods

What’s Good: Gripping story, direction, and Nawazuddin Siddiqui who is a delight to watch!

What’s Bad: While Sridevi’s acting is brilliant she needs to work on her accent. Also, the film could be shortened in the second half.

Loo Break: Interval will be good enough

Watch or Not?: A must watch

High school student Arya Sabrawal gets raped by her class mate Mohit and his aides one of who is a criminal. After the culprits are declared innocent by the court, Arya’s step mother Devaki, a school teacher decides to teach them a lesson in her own way but it’s not an easy task. A private investigator tries to help her but the police come in their way.

Will Devaki be able to avenge her daughter’s culprits?

Mom Movie Review: Script Analysis

Don’t mess with a daughter and if you do, be prepared to face her mother. Yes, you read that right, her mom. Sridevi as Devaki is not the helpless mother of Hindi movies of earlier times who would wail and sob and plead to the culprit “Bhagwan ke liye meri beti ko chhod do”. She is the 21st century Mom, who is loving and caring but not helpless. She is love and kindness personified in one moment but can turn into Maa Durga the very next to fight the demons of society and protect her children. This is the mom who doesn’t hesitate to punish her daughter’s rapists and stands as an inspiration in a country like ours where a girl is raped by some wolves openly in the public and others take the sheer pleasure of filming the video and sharing it on social media.

This aptly justifies the dialogue, “Since God cannot be everywhere, He created Mother”.

Ravi Udyawar, Girish Kohli and Kona Venkat Rao take a bow!

Mom Movie Review: Star Performance

Sridevi shows that she is one of the finest actors Bollywood has ever produced and can be proud of. The veteran actress carries the entire film on her shoulders and how! Nobody could have essayed Devaki better than her I feel. At times during the movie I felt, she is not playing Devaki, she IS Devaki. She is an inspiration for not only aspiring actors but also for B-Town’s younger generation of actors. To describe in one word, she is outstanding. However, a Delhi woman speaking Hindi with a south accent sounds a bit too odd. I’m sure the makers could have come up with a solution for this.

Has Nawazuddin Siddiqui ever failed to impress? I can’t think of any film where he has! The way he gets into the skin of the character is commendable! The supremely talented actor only gets better with every film I feel. In Bollywood, if anyone can compete with Nawazuddin, it’s Nawazuddin himself! What a performance!

Akshaye Khanna impresses as the tough crime branch cop. I wonder why he doesn’t work in more films.

Pakistani actors Adnan Siddiqui and Sajal Ali, both of who make their Bollywood debut with Mom, put up a nice performance as father and daughter. Adnan Siddiqui is especially brilliant as a grief-stricken father desperate to get justice for his daughter who is a piece of his heart.

While every actor has put in their best performance, Nawazuddin Siddiqui steals the show!

Mom Movie Review: Direction, Music

Debutant director Ravi Udyawar tells a powerful, hard-hitting story which is inspired by the reality of our society and stands as an inspiration for its women. Devaki’s question “Agar aapko galat aur bohot galat mein se chun na ho, toh aap kya chunenge?” is relevant for this society. I wish every woman who has been a victim of eve-teasing, molestation, rape, domestic violence or harassment could get justice in our country.

This is a film which every Indian woman will be able to relate with. The film connects with the viewer emotionally, which is where Ravi Udyawar scores as a director. This is a film, which will inspire women to not feel weak or helpless, to awaken the fiery Goddess inside them and fight against the wrong. Mom is a film relevant for the present time in a country where violence against women is rampant.

The film is gripping, although a few unwanted scenes in the second half where it tends to stretch could be chopped. The film particularly takes time to reach the climax.

There are a few scenes which give goosebumps and some which will make you shed tears. Sridevi’s hospital scene where she gets to know that her daughter has been raped is one of her finest performances and touches the heart.

A.R Rahman’s background music creates just the right impact for a story like this. I liked the track Chal Kahin Door and O Sona Tere Liye crooned by the composer himself.

Mom Movie Review: The Last Word

We need more moms like Devaki to protect our daughters in a society which is NOT safe for women and a paradise for rapists. Three and half stars for this one!

“MOM” the movie was a classic example of old wine in a new bottle, which in this case was a “bottle” of mediocre quality.

The movie was completely predictable from start to finish with no surprises whatsoever.

Everyone’s acting (except Sridevi) was extremely ordinary, including Nawazudin and Akshay as the roles of these two were too small to have any meaningful impact.

This is the first time that I have seen Sridevi looking so very old and tired.I guess this is a clear sign of age finally catching up with her.

Her performance was competent, but not brilliant because of the very plain script which had nothing new to offer.

All in all don’t go expecting another wonderful Sridevi movie a la “English Vinglish “as this movie is far far far from it.

However it is a million times better than that dud of a movie called “NO LIGHT”, I mean “Tubelight”

MOM one of the best movie of Sridevi Kapoor .Sridevi shows that she is one of the finest actors Bollywood has ever produced.

Whenever Jaya Bacchan or Sridevi do these kinds of role, the media goes crazy with loads of praises even though anyone could have done it brilliantly. Sridevi’s intensive facelift because of plastic surgery is just scary. Unfortunately, the Best Supporting Actress awards is ready for her already.

MOM movie cast: Sridevi, Nawazudin Siddiqui, Akshaye Khanna, Adnan Siddiqui, Sajal Ali, Abhimanyu Singh MOM movie director: Ravi Udyawar MOM movie rating: 2 stars

Mom begins with promise. Vivacious teenager Arya goes with her friends to a swinging party, and instead of working off an illicit hangover the next morning, and conducting giggly post-mortems with her school pals, finds herself in a dark, dark place.

mom movie review behindwoods

First time feature filmmaker, adman Ravi Udyawar sets it up deftly, sketching Arya’s (Ali) rocky relationship with stepmother Devki ( Sridevi ), an overly compensating one with her father (Adnan Siddiqui) and younger sister. There are some chilling sequences that we watch with our heart in our mouth: a black car circling the deserted streets of Delhi like a shark ; a bunch of entitled testosterone-filled jerks casing the joint in search of easy female prey; and how a party meant for fun and games can swiftly descend into terrifying chaos. You recall those names—Jessica Lal, Jyoti Singh — and so many other young women who don’t hit the headlines but make up the sickening assault count in the Capital. And you shake yourself and wait for the track of righteous comeuppance to kick in.

We know how the rest of it will pan out, given the countless rape-and-revenge thrillers churned out every so often: just a couple of months back, Raveena Tandon was walking the same path in Matr. The only way you can break through the clutter is via a plot boasting novelty and distinctive performances : unfortunately, Mom’s plot is riddled with holes, and is far too focused on Sridevi.

MOM movie review, MOM review, MOM, Sridevi, sridevi mom

When you start creating scenes to topline the actor not plot, such as it is, you do disservice to both. Mom is so busy keeping Sridevi centre-stage that it makes this film much less impactful than it could have been. It isn’t as if Sridevi, who returns after a sizeable gap after English Vinglish, can’t carry a film on her own. Shorn of her mannerisms, and pancake, Sri needs only a twitch or a glance to prove that she is a powerhouse, and there are several scenes she lifts by just being there.

Festive offer

But the film overdoes it, and what could have been a taut thriller is reduced to being a showcase for Sridevi’s capabilities, which we are fully aware of already. It also leaves even someone as capable as Nawazuddin struggling to overcome a spectacularly ugly hair-piece and a sketchily written part. He plays Detective DK, who is to be seen playing a wholly inexplicable game of hide-and-seek with Devki, which just serves to stretch the film needlessly.

The film side-steps this crucial question in its quest to do quirk. As the four perpetrators (including a very vivid Abhimanyu Singh) seem to be getting off scot-free, Devki gets going, and from then on, the improbabilities pile up. Just how is a school biology teacher, for that is what Devki is, meant to know anything about breaking-and-entering, and other things involving larceny? The plot is distressingly vague about these details, and we are left muttering, just like poor Akshaye Khanna who shows up as a crime branch cop reaching the point post-facto.

There are other good actors here, apart from Nawaz and Abhimanyu. Sajal Ali, who plays the young victim, is particularly effective. Adnan Siddiqui, as Sridevi’s husband, is very dishy, but suffers from the same problem the rest of the cast : not enough heft. The heavy-lifting is left to Sridevi, and she goes all out. But she is made to do too much: too much widening of the eyes, too much narrowing of the mouth, and too many things we don’t really believe she can do. You want to see what she can really do, give her a solid plot, and see her make a meal of it. Mom is not that film.

Mom-212-RAW

The role of a mother has always been quintessential in real life and it is reflected to be so in the movies too. There have been many films which have been made that portray strong character of the mother, the all time classic being MOTHER INDIA. This week’s release titled MOM starring Sridevi also shows the power of a mother. Will MOM be able to prove itself to be the ‘mother’ of all the films in Bollywood or will it bite the dust, let’s analyze.

It’s always said that ‘Since God cannot be everywhere, He created Mother’. MOM is a heart wrenching story, which mirrors the power of a mother in lieu of the aforementioned adage. The film starts off with school teacher Devki (Sridevi) punishing one of her students in school named Mohit for sending a lewd message to her daughter Arya (Sajal Ali), who also studies in the same class. Despite Sridevi’s love and affection towards Arya, Arya can’t get over the fact that she is her step-mom. There’s a constant brewing tension between them. One night, when Arya goes for a Valentine’s day party with her friends at a far off cottage, Mohit and his accomplices seize the opportunity to get even with her and land up brutally raping her and dumping her in a gutter. What happens after that are a series of court sessions, which ultimately end up declaring the ‘powerful’ Mohit and his partners as innocent and they walk away scot-free. Seeing justice slipping out of her hands, Devki approaches a small time detective Dayashankar Kapoor aka DK (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) to help her. Just as Devki starts ‘punishing’ the culprits, she comes under the radar of the razor sharp police officer Mathew Francis (Akshaye Khanna). What is the reason for Arya to hate Devki so much, does Devki succeed in her plan of exposing the culprits or does she get caught by Inspector Mathew Francis while doing so, what happens of the culprits ultimately and does Arya finally get justice, is what forms the rest of the story.

No sooner MOM’s trailer got released, it immediately caught everyone’s attention with Sridevi’s daunting question “ Agar aapko galat aur bohot galat mein se chun na ho, toh aap kya chunenge?" Thanks to Sridevi’s screen persona, the film’s trailer set the path for the film. The film is a hard-hitting tale narrated by debutante director Ravi Udyawar. What makes MOM different from other films in similar genre is the treatment and presentation. Since the film touches upon a very topical issue, it is definitely bound to find high resonance amongst the audiences.

Even though the film has an extremely gripping screenplay (Girish Kohli), it could have been tighter and far more engaging, especially in the second half. Despite the presence of moments of sheer brilliance in the film, the writer fails to sustain the same till the end. The film’s story (Ravi Udyawar, Girish Kohli, Kona Venkat) is about today’s reality and has been written in a convincing manner.

Speaking of Sridevi, with MOM, she touches the 300 th film mark of her career. Sridevi is the lifeline of MOM, as the film rests on her strong shoulders. The magic, the aura and the magnetic charisma, for which Sridevi was always known is in full display in MOM. The way Sridevi operates and takes out one accused after another with the help of Nawazuddin Siddiqui is interestingly shown. With MOM, Sridevi, yet again, proves that she still is one of the best leading actresses in Bollywood. On the other hand, there’s Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who can rightly be called as a ‘performance chameleon’. The effortlessness with which he slips into his character in MOM is truly outstanding. MOM sees an elevation of his career graph with his exceptional performance. His looks and performance in the film is simply beyond words. Seeing him and Sridevi on the big screen together is nothing short of sheer bliss. Then, there’s the suave Akshaye Khanna, who is in top form in MOM. It’s great to see him in a strong role after a long time. Besides them, there are some really good performances from Adnan Siddiqui and Sajal Ali. MOM, as a whole, comes across as a blazing powerhouse of some great performances, which also includes the actors playing the four culprits.

The film’s music (A. R. Rahman) is decent, though the song towards the end was unnecessary. On the other hand, the film’s background score (A. R. Rahman, Qutub E Kripa) is very good and creates good tension in the narrative. It’s the background score, which elevates the films’ narrative by notches.

The film has exceptional cinematography (Anay Goswamy), whereas the film’s editing (Monisha R. Baldawa) is just about decent. The film could have been trimmed for stronger impact. The action scenes in the film have also been executed very well.

On the whole, MOM is a powerful film that reflects the horrors of the society that we live in today and how the world still remains unsafe for women. The film shocks and impacts you deep within. Watch it for it’s hard hitting content and Sridevi's brilliant performance.

  • Genre: Thriller

MOM Movie Review: A compelling drama, set in a grim theme, Mom has Sridevi in the titular role shouldering the film with Nawazuddin Siqqui, Akshaye Khanna and Pakistani actress Sajal Ali. The movie already created a sensation among movie buff owing to a number of reasons. Firstly, the veteran actress Sridevi was making a comeback in Bollywood after four years. Last, she was seen in Gauri Shinde's family drama English Vinglish. Secondly, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, being the personal favourite of many, can be seen in a  jaw-dropping avatar of a personal detective. Sridevi plays the central character Devki Sabharwal whose teenaged daughter played by Sajal Ali is brutally raped by four deranged men. Will she be able to avenge her daughter?

Mom, as the name doesn't suggest even remotely, is a revenge drama based on a school teacher, Devki whose step-daughter Arya is brutally assaulted and raped by four men in a moving car. Though the case was brazenly narrating the crime, the witness and forensic reports were scrupulously manipulated by one of the acussed, who had a far reach in the world of crimes. Devki, who initially knocked the door of the law of to get justice for her daughter, is hope bereft. She loses every drop of trust in law and police she had in her and decides to take the matter in her own hands. Being a Biology teacher, she uses her learnings from the subject to vanquish the wrongdoers. She is kept up by a Daryaganj-based personal detective Dayashankar played by none other than the ace-actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui. When no one on the Earth could have imagined a 'Mom' and a simple school-teacher to conspire such criminal activities, Sridevi executes her plan with her pawn (DK). The rapists get the taste of their own whip when one by one each of them starts meeting their own fate.

Movie Review

Right from the first half of the film, the audience will get a mild deja vu from the recent Raveena Tandon film 'Maatr' where a woman avenges the rape of her daughter. Irony lies in the title of both the films whose names derive the meaning from the same word 'Mother'. The fact that 'Mom' differs from 'Maatr' is the big names studded in the star cast and a better execution of the story. Right from the beginning of the movie, the rift between the daughter and mother can be seen clearly. Sajal Ali, playing a daughter who can't cope up with the death of her mother and remarriage of his father, is just like any other teenage girl would be. She ends up into the most unfortunate night of her life when she decides to go to a farmhouse party with her friends. Her life takes an ugly turn when a boy she rejected along with his accomplices, gang rapes her in a moving car. The scene where a black SUV is seen toiling on the deserted roads of the metropolitan with a callous background score haunts the audience for a couple of minutes. Arya and her family's happy lives were devastated by the incident. Just like any other Bollywood crime flick, court extends a blind eye towards the case and acquitts all the four accused. This is where a normal person would have accepted the loop holes of the judicial system, but Devki is a rebellion. She seeks help from DK, who later becomes her co-conspirator to plan the revenge.

The end is somehow predictable. It's always th victory of good over evil.  Satyamev Jayate!  But it isn't easy. The climax is something that brought the movie somewhat lower than our expectations. When we're talking about Sridevi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui, cliches are the last thing we could expect from the film. In th end, Sridevi and the last rapist exchange some blows until the culprits points his gun towards her. But thanks to Akshaye Khanna who again puts the ball in Sridevi's court.

For Sridevi's lovers, this movie is a walk down the memory lane, where the gorgeous actress has once again mesmerised the audience with her acting skills. The word 'acting' itself doesn't fit well when we're talking about Sridevi as Devki. She has absorbed the role of a mother so deep in herself that we forget at a moment that she isn't the one we're seeing on the screen. Her histrionics have been constant throughout the film, except for the parts where she really blew our minds as mother whose daughter has been raped. Her realistic performance is going to give you a lump in your throat.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has never disappointed the audience when it comes to acting. Give him a role, and he'll outlive it. Same he did with the character of DK in 'Mom'. His treacherous way of dressing can give someone an impression of being a villain. But analyzing his contribution to Devki's revenge, he's playing the 'Wazir' in the movie. Audience will develop a mixed feeling of sympathy and pride for this middle-class detective who steps ahead to help a dejected mother.

Worth mentioning here, A.R. Rahman's background score has raised the bar of the movie by two times. The film couldn't have been this intriguing without the blood-curdling and riveting background music and songs.

Overall, 'Mom' could have met the similar fate as that of Bollywood's previous revenge dramas, but the praiseworthy performance by every single of the cast is the saving grace of the movie.

To watch or not?

Sridevi fans cannot afford to miss this movie, where Sridevi breaks her own records of effortless acting. Despite the fact that it is Ravi Udyawar's first directorial venture, the film has lived up to the hype. With things right into their place, Mom is a must watch who're eagerly looking for some substance in Bollywood films.

Mother's Day Movie Recommendations

Among the many cruelties of the coronavirus outbreak has been the way social distancing measures prevent us from visiting our relatives, which should be especially difficult on Mother’s Day for those who are accustomed to spending that time with mom.

That’s where movies can assist: Why not select a film — from the list below or one of your own choosing — and schedule a time for you and mom to watch it “together, apart”? You can both rent the movie (many are included free through streaming subscriptions) or pick an old favorite that’s in both of your home video collections, press play at the same time, then call each other afterward to talk about it.

In theory, every film character ever written has a mother, so it’s nearly impossible to imagine a definitive list of the greatest cinematic homages to the women who raised us (“momages”?). And besides, wouldn’t it be more interesting to discuss those that involve more complicated characters? What follows are two dozen suggestions from a wide range of periods and genres that should make for a juicy post-movie discussion.

Now, Voyager (1943) Even Cinderella had it easy compared to poor Bette Davis, who goes from “ugly duckling” spinster — by her spiteful mom’s description — to elegant swan, thanks to the attention of a debonair doctor (Claude Rains), who rescues her from the verge of a nervous breakdown. While hardly a celebration of motherhood, the movie explores the complicated idea of what it takes for any daughter to assert her independence from the control of a domineering parent … and follows that sense of liberation through to the character’s love life. Davis earned her seventh Oscar nom for the role, while Rains went directly from this shoot (which was over schedule) to “Casablanca.” Incidentally, Michael Curtiz wanted to direct, but Davis vetoed the idea. Watch it on: Amazon Prime, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu, YouTube Another classic to consider, this one starring Joan Crawford: “Mildred Pierce”

Popular on Variety

Postcards From the Edge (1990) Whether their parents were movie-star famous ( “Mommie Dearest” ) or self-important nobodies ( “Running With Scissors” ), many a child has mined his or her upbringing as memoir material, the vast majority of them painting mom in a critical light. “I don’t want life to imitate art, I want life to be art,” says Meryl Streep, playing a thinly veiled version of Carrie Fisher , who wrestled with addiction and growing up the daughter of Debbie Reynolds all her life (the later days of which can be seen in HBO’s “Bright Lights” ). Shirley MacLaine shines as the Reynolds stand-in, achieving the kind of flinty back-and-forth exchanges with Streep we expect from screwball comedies, as director Mike Nichols captures Fisher’s sardonic sense of humor. Watch it on: Amazon Prime (included), Google Play, iTunes, Vudu, YouTube Another Debbie Reynolds “mom com”: Albert Brooks’ “Mother” (free on Tubi)

Hairspray (1988) Chances are, mom has heard of (and maybe even seen) the Broadway musical and/or the bizarre John Travolta movie it inspired, but far fewer would have taken the trouble to track down the outrageously funny John Waters comedy that started it all. The scandalous outsider-auteur (who also made “Serial Mom” ) spent most of the ’70s and ’80s actively attacking the institutions of polite society, so it was something of a shock when he delivered a PG-rated, family-friendly movie that was at once irreverent and a rock-solid critique of prejudice and bigotry in his native Baltimore. Iconic drag queen Divine plays Edna Turnblad, mother to plus-size teenager Tracy (Ricki Lake, making her film debut), who challenges segregation on the local dance TV show. Watch it on: Amazon Prime (included), Google Play, iTunes, Vudu, YouTube Another LGBTQ pick for liberal-minded moms: “The Kids Are All Right” (free on Hulu)

Marty (1955) This classic character study — the first film to win the Palme d’Or at Cannes — is often seen as one of the great portraits of there’s-hope-for-everyone bachelorhood, but instead of seeing the lovable Bronx butcher’s mom as an obstacle, it’s worth watching with sympathy for the woman who raised him. “It is a very cruel thing when your son has no place for you in his home,” bemoans Marty’s immigrant Ma in the movie that launched Ernest Borgnine’s film career — and also that of screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky, who originally penned the endearing drama for TV (that version starred Rod Steiger). Chayefsky felt the small screen was the right place to take an intimate look at ordinary, imperfect folks, and all these decades later, the strongest series — from “Fleabag” to “Breaking Bad” — specialize in doing exactly that. Watch it on: Amazon Prime (included with membership), Google Play, iTunes, Microsoft Store, Vudu, YouTube Another dutiful-son movie: “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape”

The Meddler (2016) Before hitting it big with “Hustlers,” writer-director Lorene Scafaria crafted this love letter to her mother, who adores her Hollywood-employed daughter but obviously has an issue with boundaries. Susan Sarandon plays Scafaria’s fictionalized homage to the woman, who moves to Los Angeles after her husband dies in order to be closer to her kiddo. Too close, it seems, as she can’t help sticking her nose where it doesn’t belong. Still, what strikes her daughter (Rose Byrne) as intrusive works like a charm on J.K. Simmons’ Harley-riding loner, offering romance to this well-meaning widow. “The Meddler” is a treat for those who can’t get through the day without calling mom (or the other way around) at least once. Watch it on: Amazon Prime (included), Fandango Now, Google Play, iTunes, Vudu, YouTube Another indie dramedy with heart: Lily Tomlin in “Grandma”

Romance & Cigarettes (2007) With this list, you get two Susan Sarandon movies for the price of one — and not even the obvious weepie, starring opposite Julia Roberts in “Stepmom,” or 1994’s “Little Women” adaptation, when she played Marmee. This all-but-unseen jukebox musical from director John Turturro — yes, musical, as the characters break out into song when simple words won’t suffice — slipped through the cracks when first released, which is why I recommend it every chance I get. Around this time, Sarandon was being pigeon-holed into matronly parts, but this wild card gave her a chance to cut loose, channeling the wildcat energy of “Bull Durham” into an unforgettable portrayal of a woman scorned opposite sad-sack hubby James Gandolfini. Watch it on: Vudu (free), Amazon Prime, iTunes Yet another great Susan Sarandon mom movie: “Jeff, Who Lives at Home” (free on Crackle)

The Manchurian Candidate (1962) Assuming your own mom falls into the “world’s greatest” category, it could be fun to plunge into the dysfunctional end of the spectrum together (though not quite so far as “Carrie” or “Psycho,” mind you). Angela Lansbury was just three years older than Laurence Harvey when she played the actor’s diabolical mother, who tries to manipulate Frank Sinatra’s character into killing the would-be president so her husband can take power. A clever commentary on Cold War paranoia expressed in then-radical filmmaking techniques — the editing of the brainwashing scene is especially brilliant — this time-capsule thriller still chills, aging better than its 2004 remake, in which Meryl Streep played the mom. Watch it on: HBO (included), Amazon Prime, iTunes, Microsoft Another movie where Ma makes criminals of men: “White Heat”

Secrets & Lies (1996) No director captures the nuances of human nature with quite the generosity or precision of Mike Leigh, whose unique method of developing a screenplay through improvisation and rehearsal with his cast results in ensemble movies where even the smallest characters feel fully realized. This half-forgotten treasure, the richest work in Leigh’s can’t-go-wrong filmography, is all about reconciliation and redemption, as a young optometrist (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) reaches out to the white woman (Brenda Blethyn) who gave her up for adoption. At first, it’s a shock to the mother, but as the two bond, the challenge comes in breaking the news with the rest of the family. It would take at least a limited series to cover this much ground these days, and it’s sure to inspire great post-screening conversations. Watch it on: Criterion Channel (included) Another kitchen-sink British classic on Criterion: “A Taste of Honey”

Imitation of Life (1959) Lana Turner and Juanita Moore play mothers, one white, the other black, who face different struggles in raising their two daughters under the same roof in a film that dared to confront issues that society continue to struggle with. Douglas Sirk, that master of the Hollywood melodrama, strikes a balance between overheated emotions and such sobering themes as a modern woman’s professional ambitions and the cruel side effects of racial inequality, tying it all together in an unforgettable funeral scene serenaded by Mahalia Jackson. Here’s a rare case when the remake is better than the original — although cinephiles may enjoy comparing this adaptation of Fannie Hurst’s novel to the earlier version starring Claudette Colbert, or even Todd Haynes’ 2002 homage, “Far From Heaven.” Watch it on: Amazon Prime (included), iTunes, Google Play, Vudu, YouTube Another take on the material: John M. Stahl’s “Imitation of Life” (1934)

My Flesh and Blood (2003) Before the Duggar family became reality-show stars with their cheaper-by-the-dozen approach to childrearing, this crowd-favorite Sundance doc introduced audiences to Susan Tom, who has adopted 11 children, most of them with special needs. Director Jonathan Karsh all but embeds himself into this self-made family, delivering an honest and hugely encouraging look at how this seemingly inexhaustible supermom operates. Although Tom’s patience certainly inspires, one can’t help but psychoanalyze what compels a woman to take on this much responsibility. Watch it on: iTunes Another look at mothers who rise to unusual challenges: Cher in “Mask”

Roma (2018) Despite all the hosannas it received, I have a hunch that “Children of Men” director Alfonso Cuarón’s tribute to the housekeeper who raised him may be among the least-seen Oscar best picture nominees of all time. If you and mom both have Netflix, why not use this time to catch up with the critically acclaimed drama? The soft-spoken main character, Cleo, acts as a surrogate mom to a middle-class Mexican family’s three kids while coping with an unwanted pregnancy of her own. It helps to have someone else to discuss the experience with, since this subtitled movie’s slow pace and calculated camera movements can be somewhat challenging to those who don’t regularly consume art-house cinema. The film’s iconic group hug is especially powerful at a time of social distancing. Watch it on: Netflix (included) Another Spanish-language mama drama on Netflix: “Sunday’s Illness”

BEHINDWOODS COLUMN

Cinemanatomy, confessions of a passionate ex-.

''Movie reviews at Behindwoods are not as easy as what the audience might think it is'', Behindwoods, Dhananjayan

When I walked into Behindwoods, I had just one thing in mind. That one thing that many people have in their minds too. ‘Save Cinema’. I obviously did not know from what, but yeah I wanted to save cinema.   When I sat on my chair, relieved of the fact that I was finally there after a month long hardcore interview process, I learned that my colleagues were far more up to date about cinema than I was. I was surprised. So much that I just could not bat an eyelid and when I finally managed to bat one, the calendar had secretly swallowed two full years.   At Behindwoods, I had no training. I instead, was offered a large number of experiences and plenty of chances to learn from my mistakes. From writing news stories and articles to music reviews and slideshows to working on special events to serving as the creative head of the video team, I had absolute fun. It is probably in the gene of Behindwoods – to work with a smile on our faces. However, when there is a movie release, our faces suddenly turn serious.    Movie reviews at Behindwoods are not as easy as what the audience might think it is. It is an arithmetic calculation of the directorial excellence multiplied by the exuberance of the audience divided by the technicalities in the movie. Yes, it is as ‘head-scratching’ as mentioned. It is Math. A subject most of us hate. Finding X has always been a nightmare for us. Now you know why we are all serious about it.   Of course we’ve made mistakes. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, I would see my Twitter feed filled with hate messages and comments. People have rechristened me with interesting names (mostly unpleasant) and have also suggested me other career options like begging and looting. I sometimes wouldn’t even know why I was being targeted (so would the people who target), until I get to office and find out that it was some post in Behindwoods by someone that offended them.    But over the last couple of years, I have made miniscule attempts to save cinema. I have even written columns about fan fights, piracy and other issues that linger in cinema. However, there is a bitter truth that I soon learned. People just don’t care.   For them, cinema has always been a hobby, a pastime, a mere source of entertainment out of their busy schedules. So they obviously wouldn’t care about the hundreds of lives that eat, drink and breathe cinema every day.   People continue to watch new movies online and fan fights continue to prevail in full josh. Whenever we post a picture of Ajith, we would be called Ajithwoods and when it is a picture of Vijay we become Vijaywoods. We just cannot help it. For them, it is entertainment. Sometimes I have even wished there was an actor named “Behind” so that people would call us “Behindwoods” when we post his picture.   But ultimately, what makes Behindwoods one of the top entertainment websites of Tamil Cinema? ANS: It is because we have a strong and passionate team that works day and night (literally) to keep the audience up to date of what is happening in Tamil Cinema.   From Videos to Interviews to News stories to articles to slide shows to Box Office Reports to Music Reviews to Movie Reviews – they all appear as mere products of Behindwoods to the general public. But there is a humongous amount of effort that is being put in to build every element of these products.   We are huge from the outside. But nobody would ever believe that a leading entertainment website churns out so much content from a three bedroom apartment in Guindy. It is not about the space we work in, but the people in it, who form a successful organization.    Sincere thanks to my fellow colleagues who traveled with me these couple of years, making my life at Behindwoods worthwhile.   It is indeed hard and disappointing to walk out of this remarkable media house. But I would always keep my head raised high as a proud ex-employee of Behindwoods.    I would also like to thank all celebrities like Dhananjayan sir, SJ Suryah sir, Parthiban sir, Sreekar Prasad sir, Vedhika, Surbhi, Taapsee, Dany, Anandhi, Hip Hop Aadhi to name a few and many others who have directly or indirectly appreciated my work.   I do not believe in superstitions. But there is one superstitious belief that Behindwoods has taught me. If you are ambitious about something and work with utmost passion to achieve it, the universe will bring it to you.   I will see you all from the other side of cinema.   Abhishek Krishnan Ex Senior Sub Editor www.behindwoods.com   Tweet

THIRUCHITRAMBALAM MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Mithran R Jawahar's Thiruchitrambalam is a tamil rom-com film starring Dhanush, Bharathiraja, Prakashraj, Nithya Menen,  Raashi Khanna & Priya Bhavani Shankar. The film is produced by Kalanithi Maaran, Sun Pictures and distributed by Red Giant Movies.

Thiruchitrambalam (Dhanush) who works as a delivery boy finds it difficult to fit into his family. His life is turned upside when tragedy arrives at his doorstep. Shobana (Nithya Menen), his best friend & his grand-father, fantastically played by Bharathiraja are his only solace. Will they be able to solve the problems of Pazham forms the core of the story.

Dhanush fits into the role of Thiruchitrambalam with ease. It is pleasing to see him as a boy next door after a very long time. Nithya Menen proves yet again of her versatility. She elevates every frame with her organic performance. Be it scolding or dancing she outwits everything. Prakashraj and Bharathiraja play according to the script which was meticulously written. Raashi Khanna and Priya Bhavani Shankar play their cameos neat with no hindrances to the script.

Cinematography of Om Prakash captures the raw emotions aesthetically. The ever refreshing DnA combo delivers the mood of the film with right notes. Megham Karukaadha is visually pleasing while Thaai Kelavi is a mindboggler for the fans. Though the plot curtails the usage of background scores, it delivers a proper theatrical experience.

The film runs around 2 hours which works positively for it. The script reminds us intermittently of various other films right from the title card which again works better for the film. Exchanges between Dhanush and Bharathiraja kindles laughter every single time. The hositility of Pazham towards his father is deeply rooted under a silly motive. Once the reason is revealed, we find it difficult to empathise with either of the characters. The take on the concept of love is lively and fascinating as Pazham ends on the losing side till the end.

The film heavily relies on dialogues to drive the plot forward and it is done efficiently. The transformation of Pazham looks very convenient and contrived but keeps us hooked. Its a well made entertainer that ends our drought for feel good films.

Thiruchitrambalam is held together by the unparalleled performances of Dhanush, Nithya Menon, and Bharathiraja. Avoiding the cliches leaves the film in a pedestal though it has its own flaws.

Bad Moms Review

mom movie review behindwoods

THE DAY THAT MOM QUIT

What does it mean to be a good mom? What does it mean to be a bad Mom? How does one raise their children? How do you balance your family life and your work life? These are all good questions and, for tense and purposes, there really isn’t a clear definitive answer on the subject. For better or worse, be it a mom or dad, can be stressful with so much going on in your personal life and the lives of your family (i.e. spouse and children). At some point, however, whether the person would admit it or not, every parent has their “breaking point”. The question is…what happens after that? In a comedic spin on such parental events, STX Entertainment and Huayi Brothers Pictures present the R-rated comedy film Bad Moms . Does this feature bring the laughs as well as some poignant meaning or is it a forgetful raunchy comedy?

mom movie review behindwoods

Overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated, Amy Mitchell (Mila Kunis) is struggling to raise children, Dylan (Emjay Anthony) and Jane (Oona Laurence), and recently kicking her husband Mike (David Walton) out of the house to due to his infidelity. Unable to keep up with the overpowering demands of parenthood, Amy finally reaches her breaking point, finally working up the nerve to quit her “mom” life, which draws ire from PTA queen Gwendolyn (Christina Applegate) and her underlings, Stacy (Jada Pinkett Smith) and Vicky (Annie Mumolo). Befriending the sheltered mom Kiki (Kristen Bell) and the oversexed single mom Carla (Kathryn Hahn), Amy learns to have fun again, going crazy with her newfound freedom while making moves on the hunky single dad widower Jessie (Jay Hernandez). Finally expressing herself away from domestic demands, Amy blossoms into finding herself, while challenging Gwendolyn for the PTA leadership, trying to become the liberating figure for mothers everywhere.

mom movie review behindwoods

THE GOOD / THE BAD

As I am not a parent (not yet anyways), I really can’t describe and go into great details about my opening remarks, which is what I do in this paragraph. I can tell you about my mom and that she is great and that she did tell me that she had to find her “balance” between raising my brother and I and also her work (my parents own a business together and are still happily married). So it worked out in the end for my parents, but not without a few bumps along the way. Anyhow, back to the movie review. I remember seeing the trailer for Bad Moms and died laughing, finding it to be hilarious and “must see” film for me to see in theaters. What did I think of it? Despite being predictable (for a comedy feature) and some thinly sketched characters, Bad Moms is a hilarious comedy with plenty of belly laughs moments, kooky shenanigans, and (if you dig deep enough) some interesting social commentary.

Bad Moms is directed (and written) by the duo Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, the pair who penned the script for 21 & Over and The Hangover . While I haven’t seeing 21 & Over , I have seeing The Hangover and loved it (still do), Thus, it seems Lucas and Moore took that “Hangover” notion when crafting and filming Bad Moms (i.e. it’s surreal and crazy premise). In truth, the whole concept of Bad Moms is quite a playful setup with plenty of comedy elements already locked and loaded (more on that below). Even though this is a comedy film, Lucas and Moore surprisingly interject a bit of social commentary into the movie, mostly through the character of Amy. This includes debonair / lazy life of Millennials (Generation X), the under value of marriage (i.e. cheating), the dealings of how to raise your children in today’s world (whether to do too much or too little or a combination of the two), and the difference between working moms and stay-at-home-moms or even the more “privileged” moms, who have the time to be consumed completely by PTA meetings. Some of these are played off for laughs and some are a tad bit more serious, but its good notion to be presented.

While seeing other comedies this year ( Central Intelligence, Ghostbusters, Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising , etc.), Bad Moms is actually quite funny and surely does brings the laughs to the proceedings. In truth, I haven’t laughed so hard (and frequently) at the movie theaters since Deadpool (even though that was a superhero movie) or 2015’s Sisters . The jokes come quick and fast and are layered with raunchy R-rated crass humor and crazy shenanigans. So be ready for a lots of crude jokes. That being said, that’s the first problem with Bad Moms (i.e. for some). The comedy movie genre (as a whole) has a wide range from dark comedies, raunchy comedies, slapstick comedies, to sophisticated comedies. What I mean is this… Bad Moms isn’t quite original in its gags and so might be “turned off” by bombardment of comedy angst. Personally, I didn’t bother me (I actually loved it). I’m just bring it up to my readers. Basically, if you like raunchy comedy movies, Bad Moms is right up your alley and you’ll probably laugh along with the movie. On the flip side, if you were looking for something witty or sophisticated then you might be a tad disappointed and a few chuckles shorts. It all just depends on what tickles your “funny bone”. For me, this film does.

Unfortunately, Bad Moms isn’t completely sharp and fresh as it wants to be. The movie invests more time in its premise and overall crazy R-rated jokes than it does at evolving story and character beyond what’s initial presented. This, of course, leads to the film be slightly predictable with a routine comedy formula over a film’s third act story arc. Characters are established, problems happen, and then everything works out in the end. Again, like what said about the movie’s comedy, I didn’t bother me so much as I didn’t expect the movie to be anything original and layered with well-rounded depth. I’m just point it out for you guys (the readers). However, what bothered me (a bit) was there they were some sub-plot story threads that didn’t completely pan out or were just dangling by the time the movie reached the end credits. It was like Lucas and Moore had some good ideas, but didn’t know where to go with them. In short, Bad Moms could’ve been something truly great, if only certain things were tweaked in its development.

What does sell movie (and its comedy) is the three protagonist moms in Bad Moms (i.e. Amy, Kiki, and Carla). Of the three, actress Mila Kunis is perhaps given the most to do, anchoring the film in its lead role as Amy Mitchell, a mom who reaches her “breaking point” and struggles to find her balance within your life. Kunis, known for her comedy roles as well as some drama ones, easily dishes out the lines in pleasant and sympathetic way, given her character the most compelling one in the movie (which is what the film intended to do). Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn follow behind her as the sheltered and fragile mother Kiki and the crass single mother (who’s been around the block) Carla respectfully. While both are, more or less, supportive caricatures incarnations, both Bell and Hahn do a good job in those roles, especially Hahn’s Carla who is hilarious. The three have great chemistry with one another and play off with each other’s role, acting as the mismatched misfits that are usually commonplace with comedy films. It doesn’t reach the hilarious trio of The Hangover’s “Wolfpack”, but the trio in Bad Moms is a fun bunch and sells in the movie’s notion of three distinct different moms out there.

Opposite the trio of Kunis, Bell, and Hahn is the more antagonist female trio belonging to Christina Applegate, Jada Pinkett Smith and Annie Mumolo with their characters of Gwendolyn, Stacy, and Vicky. Applegate’s Gwendolyn is the epitome of the classic over-zealous PTA moms out there and, while being a tad cliché, is great in performance with her demanding, but sugary-goodness persona. As for her mom minions, Mumolo’s Vicky gets a few laughs (with her character being a bit stupid for chuckles), while Jada Pinkett Smith’s Stacy is just there and not much to her character or for laughs.

Bad Moms’s supporting players are good in their roles, but, more often than not, they are simplistic caricatures rather than well-rounded minor characters. Amy’s two kids Dylan and Jane, played by Emjay Anthony and Oona Laurence (loved her in Southpaw ), are good and have their moments being of Amy entitled and stress-ridden children. David Walton’s Mike, Amy’s stereotypical clueless / dopey husband, who, while funny in his bits, is a stereotypical and thinly sketched in the movie. The same goes for Jay Hernandez’s Jessie, the “hunky” and “dreamy” single dad, who has an attraction to Amy, but is just more of afterthought character for show. There are a couple of fun cameo roles throughout the movie, but the most interesting one comes in the form of pro-football player JJ Watt (Houston Texan’s Defensive End) as Coach Craig, a middle school soccer coach. I actually was the surprised to see #99 in Bad Moms (I found him to be funny) and was probably the only person who recognized him when I saw the movie in theaters. Basically, all these supporting characters (including the ones I didn’t mention) are in the movie for either comical relief or minor subplot devices or a combination of the two.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Mila Kunis experiences the mother-of-all “mom” breakdowns in the new movie Bad Moms . Directors Lucas and Moore craft a story that showcases the struggle of being a “mom” in today’s world with bountiful dosage of R-rated laughs and shenanigans along the way. Although the film isn’t made for everyone as the feature’s comedy has an acquired taste and the movie’s narrative isn’t exactly new nor original, following the standard trials and tribulations found in similar style comedies. To me, I liked this movie. It wasn’t exactly a “game changer” for the genre, but it still entertained me and kept me laughing throughout. Thus, I do personally recommend this movie, especially all the moms out there. However, it may not be for everyone. Will this movie be highly memorable as The Hangover or Jump 21 Street ? Well, the jury is still out on that, but maybe. Nevertheless, Bad Moms is an enjoyable comedy with plenty of raunchy laughs, a great cast, fun cameo bits, and dash of parental sentimentality.

Great review, glad you liked it! I feel like this might be a “chill” movie to watch when you don’t really know what to watch. I really like Mila Kunis! 😀

I do like Kunis as well. Bad Moms is a good movie that you can watch at anytime.

I’m somewhat surprised. I like the actors but not the premise, so much. YOu’ve inspired me to give it a chance.

Haha…well thank you. I think the movie is worth a chance. Its nothing new or original, but its better than some comedies I’ve seen this year.
