Dissertations & Theses

Dissertations and theses are formatted the same way in APA 7th edition. Theses are generally the culminating work for a master's or undergraduate degree and dissertations are often original research completed by doctoral students. To cite a PhD thesis in a reference entry in APA style 6th edition include the following elements:

  • Author(s) of the thesis: Give the last name and initials (e. g. Watson, J. D.) of up to seven authors with the last name preceded by an ampersand (&). For eight or more authors include the first six names followed by an ellipsis (…) and add the last author's name.
  • Year of publication: Give the year in brackets followed by a full stop.
  • Title of the PhD thesis: Only the first letter of the first word and proper nouns are capitalized.
  • URL: Give the full URL where the document can be retrieved from.

Here is the basic format for a reference list entry of a PhD thesis in APA style 6th edition:

If the thesis is available from a database, archive or any online platform use the following template:

  • Publication number: Give the identification number of the thesis, if available.

  • URL: If the thesis was found on a database, omit this element.

Citing a thesis or dissertation.

Thesis – A document submitted to earn a degree at a university.

Dissertation – A document submitted to earn an advanced degree, such as a doctorate, at a university.

The formatting for thesis and dissertation citations is largely the same. However, you should be sure to include the type of degree after the publication year as supplemental information. For instance, state if the source you are citing is an undergraduate thesis or a PhD dissertation.

Citation styles

A citation style provides a standardized system to format bibliographic references within the text and in the bibliography at the end of the essay. In particular, the style defines which elements to cite, in what order to cite them and with what punctuation.

There isn’t an official citation style used in Bocconi University. Since there are different citation styles, you will need to choose which one is right for you, taking into account the subject area and what you supervisor might suggest.

Some styles commonly used internationally are:

The APA style is an “author-date” citation system, with the author and date of the cited source appearing in the body of the text. You will need to add a bibliography at the end of the essay, with the full references alphabetically ordered by author’s name. It is mainly used in the social sciences.

The Chicago style uses two systems: "author-date" in the body of the text and bibliography at the end of the paper, or footnotes with bibliography.

The Harvard style is an “author-date” citation, with the author and date of the cited source appearing in the body of the text. You must include a bibliography at the end of the text, with the full references alphabetically ordered by author’s name. It is used in the social sciences.

The MLA style, developed by the Modern language Association, is an “author-page number” citation system appearing in the body of the text. You must include a bibliography at the end of the text, with the full references alphabetically ordered by author’s name. It is used in the social sciences and humanities.

The Oscola style, acronym for Oxford University Standard for Citation of Legal Authorities, is a citation system using footnotes and bibliography. It is used in law studies.

Basic Format for Books

Edited book, no author, edited book with an author or authors, a translation.

Note : When you cite a republished work, like the one above, in your text, it should appear with both dates: Plato (385-378/1989)

Edition Other Than the First

Article or chapter in an edited book.

Note : When you list the pages of the chapter or essay in parentheses after the book title, use "pp." before the numbers: (pp. 1-21). This abbreviation, however, does not appear before the page numbers in periodical references, except for newspapers. List any edition number in the same set of parentheses as the page numbers, separated by a comma: (2nd ed., pp. 66-72).

Multivolume Work

Articles in periodicals.

APA style dictates that authors are named with their last name followed by their initials; publication year goes between parentheses, followed by a period. The title of the article is in sentence-case, meaning only the first word and proper nouns in the title are capitalized. The periodical title is run in title case, and is followed by the volume number which, with the title, is also italicized. If a DOI has been assigned to the article that you are using, you should include this after the page numbers for the article. If no DOI has been assigned and you are accessing the periodical online, use the URL of the website from which you are retrieving the periodical.

Article in Print Journal

Note: APA 7 advises writers to include a DOI (if available), even when using the print source. The example above assumes no DOI is available.

Article in Electronic Journal

Note :  This content also appears on Reference List: Online Media .

As noted above, when citing an article in an electronic journal, include a DOI if one is associated with the article.

DOIs may not always be available. In these cases, use a URL. Many academic journals provide stable URLs that function similarly to DOIs. These are preferable to ordinary URLs copied and pasted from the browser's address bar.

Each referencing style has different rules for presenting source information. For in-text citations, some use footnotes or endnotes , while others include the author’s surname and date of publication in brackets in the text.

The reference list or bibliography is presented differently in each style, with different rules for things like capitalisation, italics, and quotation marks in references.

Your university will usually tell you which referencing style to use; they may even have their own unique style. Always follow your university’s guidelines, and ask your tutor if you are unsure. The most common styles are summarised below.

Harvard referencing, the most commonly used style at UK universities, uses author–date in-text citations corresponding to an alphabetical bibliography or reference list at the end.

In-text citations should be used whenever you quote, paraphrase, or refer to information from a source (e.g. a book, article, image, website, or video).

Quoting and paraphrasing

Quoting is when you directly copy some text from a source and enclose it in quotation marks to indicate that it is not your own writing.

Paraphrasing is when you rephrase the original source into your own words. In this case, you don’t use quotation marks, but you still need to include a citation.

In most referencing styles, page numbers are included when you’re quoting or paraphrasing a particular passage. If you are referring to the text as a whole, no page number is needed.

In-text citations

In-text citations are quick references to your sources. In Harvard referencing, you use the author’s surname and the date of publication in brackets.

Up to three authors are included in a Harvard in-text citation. If the source has more than three authors, include the first author followed by ‘ et al. ‘

The point of these citations is to direct your reader to the alphabetised reference list, where you give full information about each source. For example, to find the source cited above, the reader would look under ‘J’ in your reference list to find the title and publication details of the source.

Placement of in-text citations

In-text citations should be placed directly after the quotation or information they refer to, usually before a comma or full stop. If a sentence is supported by multiple sources, you can combine them in one set of brackets, separated by a semicolon.

If you mention the author’s name in the text already, you don’t include it in the citation, and you can place the citation immediately after the name.

  • Another researcher warns that the results of this method are ‘inconsistent’ (Singh, 2018, p. 13) .
  • Previous research has frequently illustrated the pitfalls of this method (Singh, 2018; Jones, 2016) .
  • Singh (2018, p. 13) warns that the results of this method are ‘inconsistent’.

The terms ‘bibliography’ and ‘reference list’ are sometimes used interchangeably. Both refer to a list that contains full information on all the sources cited in your text. Sometimes ‘bibliography’ is used to mean a more extensive list, also containing sources that you consulted but did not cite in the text.

A reference list or bibliography is usually mandatory, since in-text citations typically don’t provide full source information. For styles that already include full source information in footnotes (e.g. OSCOLA and Chicago Style ), the bibliography is optional, although your university may still require you to include one.

Format of the reference list

Reference lists are usually alphabetised by authors’ last names. Each entry in the list appears on a new line, and a hanging indent is applied if an entry extends onto multiple lines.

Different source information is included for different source types. Each style provides detailed guidelines for exactly what information should be included and how it should be presented.

Your university should tell you which referencing style to follow. If you’re unsure, check with a supervisor. Commonly used styles include:

References should be included in your text whenever you use words, ideas, or information from a source. A source can be anything from a book or journal article to a website or YouTube video.

How to ask for references for your postgraduate degree

One of the steps of applying for a postgraduate degree is asking for references. this requires reaching out to people who you believe will be able to speak honestly about your academic achievements.

Applying for a postgraduate degree at a top institution might feel like something you want to do in secret, lest you face rejection from your top choices. Unfortunately, the fact that you need to ask for references means that you can’t quite be as secretive as you might like. 

You not only need to believe in yourself enough to apply for the course , but enough to convince four very credible individuals to vouch for you. In other words, your “impostor syndrome”   will be at an all-time high. 

This was the most daunting part of the entire process for me when I started applying for master’s courses six months ago, and the one aspect that made me almost give up. 

Reference requirements vary by course and institution but here is everything I wish I knew. 

Where to start

My first and most crucial piece of advice is to  know your timeline . 

As soon as you have decided on courses and scholarships, find all the deadlines and write them in your calendar (personally I’ve always used  Google Cal ). 

This not only gives you enough time to compile your CV, transcript, proposal and find a supervisor (if required), but gives your referees enough time to write your reference amid their own busy schedule. Starting early also allows you enough time to find another referee if one doesn’t work out. Let it be a cautionary tale that one referee I had in mind – someone who had written a reference letter for me in the past – had changed her email address and couldn’t be contacted.

For 1 December and 5 January application deadlines, I sent my initial email to potential referees on 14 September. That’s two-and-a-half months ahead of time.

Second, the question of  who to ask .

On this topic there are a few things to consider. First, I would advise checking whether each application requires an “academic reference”, “professional reference” or “character/personal reference”, then see how many you need of each. For my most demanding application, I needed three academic references and one professional/personal reference. Trust me, this was no small quest. 

Ideally you want to focus on finding a referee who maintains the balance between being as established and credible as possible, while also knowing you well enough to vouch for your achievements  first hand . 

Third, the most uncomfortable part: asking for the reference. This is the lion’s share of the work.

As you reach out to each potential referee (two-and-a-half months ahead of time), you want to be considerate, concise and clear. Mention which courses you are applying to, the respective deadlines and ask if they would be willing to provide a reference. 

I followed this with a description of my planned academic specialisation and the value of their perspective on my work: as a supervisor, as a team leader, as a course instructor. I felt this was important because I wanted to show that I had put consideration into  their relevance to my application, the understanding that, even though they might not know me  well , they could speak for my achievements where others couldn’t. Be confident in your tone; if you can vouch for yourself, they can vouch for you.

Finally, acknowledge that this is a sizeable request; “I understand this is a huge demand on your time so I would be more than happy to put together a document of my key academic achievements or have a zoom call to talk more about it.”

Proofread the email as many times as you can bear to, then send it, sit back and wait.

The next steps

The final stage of the process: keep track of everything.

Once each referee confirmed, I got back to them with more details, specifically who my other referees were and the parts of my CV I hoped each of them might cover. While this might not make sense for everyone’s applications, I aimed to prevent as much crossover as possible and laid this out in a colour-coded shared Google Doc.

More experienced referees may also ask you for other documents at this stage, such as your official university transcript or the final draft of your research proposal (if applicable).

Keep an eye on the application portal and don’t hesitate to send a reminder email a week before the final deadline if it seems your referees may have forgotten. They’re busy, it happens.

Final thoughts

The hard truth is that at some point during the gruelling postgraduate application process you might choose to give up – many people do. There are essays, CVs, interviews, fees, but don’t let the   references be the part that discourages you. 

I didn’t do honours, never wrote a dissertation, never worked as a paid research assistant. I didn’t have a particularly close relationship with any of my professors but last month I was offered a  place for postgraduate study at the University of Oxford .

It’s true that you need to find four credible individuals to say they believe in what you’re capable of, but the most important one of those is yourself.

Android 15 could stop your phone from vibrating like crazy when you get a lot of notifications

When Google released the first developer preview for its upcoming Android 15 update earlier this year, it included a handy new feature called “notification cooldown.” The feature, as its name implies, puts notifications on cooldown when they get annoying. Thanks to notification cooldown, Android 15, by default, will gradually lower the notification volume when you get many successive notifications from the same app. One issue with the notification cooldown feature, though, is that it does nothing to stop these same notifications from constantly vibrating your phone. That’s set to change in the near future, though.

While digging through the latest Android 15 Beta 1.2 update, I managed to bring back the settings page for notification cooldown ( Settings > Notifications > Notification cooldown ) that Google hid from users in Android 15 Beta 1. In the process, I also discovered a new toggle that wasn’t present before: “vibrate when unlocked.” According to the description, this toggle makes it so your phone will “only vibrate when [the] screen is unlocked.” In other words, enabling this toggle should prevent your phone from vibrating in your pocket when you receive a ton of successive notifications from the same app.

Unlike the main notification cooldown feature, though, “vibrate when unlocked” is disabled by default. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to enable, so if you’re worried about notifications triggering your phone’s haptics to go crazy, you can turn this feature on for peace of mind. If you’re worried about missing important notifications, on the other hand, you can leave this toggle disabled and also switch off notification cooldown entirely. Alternatively, you can change the default “apply cooldown to all notifications” to “apply cooldown to conversations” if you don’t want to miss out on other important notifications.

Although Google deliberately hid the notification cooldown page from users in Android 15 Beta 1 , I think it’ll come back in a future beta update, perhaps in next month’s Android 15 Beta 2 release. While it’s possible that Google has decided to scrap this feature entirely, we don’t think that’s very likely, given that it had already gone live in the public developer preview. Hopefully when the feature returns, it’ll be brought back with this new “vibrate when unlocked” toggle in tow. As a bonus, since the code for the “notification cooldown” feature is already in AOSP , we can expect it to show up on non-Pixel devices, too, once they receive their own updates to Android 15.

Adobe is adding some new generative AI tools to its Photoshop creative software that aim to give users additional ways to control the designs they generate. Powered by Adobe’s new Firefly Image 3 foundation model, these new tools are available today via the Photoshop beta desktop app, and will be generally available “later this year” according to Adobe’s Press release.

The most notable tool is Reference Image, which uses user-uploaded images to inspire the output generated by Adobe’s AI, matching similar elements in style and color. For example, instead of repeatedly tweaking a prompt description like “a blue vintage truck with flower decals,” users can instead provide a reference image that Photoshop will use as a guide.

“Prompting is a pain in the butt,” Ely Greenfield, chief technology officer for Digital Media at Adobe told The Verge . “Why spend an hour trying to craft a three-paragraph prompt if you have an image that you’ve created that’s exactly the thing you want to reference? The saying ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’ applies here.”

Users are expected to have the rights to use images they want to reference. Greenfield told the Verge that a message will flag this ownership requirement when the tool is first used, and that the company is working on a universal “do not train” tag for Adobe’s Content Authenticity Initiative that will also block images from being used as a reference. Images uploaded as reference materials won’t be used to train Firefly. Despite the ownership responsibility being placed on users, Adobe says this new referencing tool is still “ safe for commercial use ” — one of the most notable advantages that Adobe claims Firefly has over rival generative AI models.

Additional generative AI tools available in the Photoshop beta app include Generate Background, which replaces and creates new background images for things like product photography, and Enhance Detail, which increases clarity and makes images appear sharper.

Generate Similar is also available, which uses one of the three images generated by Photoshop’s Firefly tools as a reference to produce similar-looking content, while Generate Image allows users starting with a blank page to generate an entire image from a text description for the first time.

Adobe’s third-generation Firefly model, which has higher-quality image generation capabilities compared to its predecessor , is also available in a public, global beta for anyone to try outside of Photoshop via the Firefly web application. Adobe says its latest Firefly model delivers “photorealistic quality like never before with better lighting, positioning, and attention to detail.” Firefly Image 3 is more capable than the previous Firefly model at understanding long, descriptive text prompts, and can produce clearer text in the images it generates.

Outside of generative AI, Adobe is also adding some new, standard tools to Photoshop that can speed up creative processes. These include an Adjustment Brush that lets Photoshop users make non-destructive changes, such as color adjustments, to specific sections of an image. NEW YORK — The orgiastic delights of Jay Gatsby’s parties mostly lurk between the lines of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s clipped prose. But there is nothing coy about the extravagant stage musical that opened Thursday at the Broadway Theatre, where a cascade of visual splendors showers the eye like a fire hose. When actual sparks rain down on the first soiree, toss any hankering for subtlety out the window.

Directed by Marc Bruni with the broadness of a 10-lane highway, “The Great Gatsby” is a grand, crowd-pleasing spectacle: Tourists, Jazz Age enthusiasts and fans of its vocal-powerhouse stars Eva Noblezada and Jeremy Jordan are already lining up outside the stage door. And there is something to be said for a splashy night out, even if it casts off the author’s intended message.

The Style section

To the likely dismay of your high school English teacher, any critique of material excess, social disparities or the American Dream that has made the book a classroom staple gets stripped here in deference to a swoony and ill-fated love story. This isn’t a high-society tragedy set against the dawn of modernity but a rom-com that nose-dives into overwrought melodrama.

Midwestern fish-out-of-water Nick Carraway is a clear-eyed audience surrogate: Amid an assembly of mild caricatures, Noah J. Ricketts gives an admirable and firm-footed performance. The subjects of his narration, prose mostly lifted from Fitzgerald, all seem to know they are part of a Great Big Story, even as they appear to be plucked from a hodgepodge of genres.

His cousin Daisy (Noblezada) is fluttering and giggly but vaguely unhappy when we meet her in a lofty drawing room with windows overlooking Long Island Sound (the elaborate, projection-enhanced Art Deco set is by Paul Tate dePoo III). “God, I’ve made it,” Daisy sings, draped in a cropped and diaphanous cotton-candy dress, “I’m so sophisticated.” (The lavish costumes are by Linda Cho.) The lyrics by Nathan Tysen generally relay backstory and circumstance, whether or not they’re tinged with emotion.

Daisy’s husband Tom (John Zdrojeski), her ticket to this fabulous life, is the philandering brute she knows him to be. But the couple’s durable if brittle bond, forged in old-money breeding — so integral to the narrative’s structure — is imperceptible from the start. The audience is clearly meant to ask, “Why is she with this guy?” as a precursor to, “Now look at this dreamboat!”

That would be the debonair Gatsby (Jordan), sapped of mystery and crooning in wistful high registers about the one who slipped through his fingers but is now within reach. Jason Howland’s music, serviceable Broadway pop without much distinct flavor (not even jazz, that low-hanging fruit), excels at soaring ballads, allowing both Jordan and Noblezada to demonstrate considerable vocal gymnastics.

Book writer Kait Kerrigan exalts the central romance into a reunion of true loves torn apart by wartime, like something out of “ The Notebook .” Characters and their motivations are fleshed out for the purpose of moralizing infidelities and making their tragic ends feel less random. Gatsby is so smitten he can hardly stand upright; Daisy has a song about longing to remain faithful until she’s drawn over the edge.

Tom’s mistress Myrtle (Sara Chase) and her aggrieved husband George (Paul Whitty) are figured as cartoonish avatars of the working class with thick New Yawk accents whose fates are intertwined with the wealthy set by both love and money. There is even a juiced-up romantic plot between Nick and the steely Jordan Baker, played by Samantha Pauly (like Ricketts, another grounding presence). The two skeptics, vaguely queer-coded as in the novel, also can’t help but fall for each other.

This revisionary attempt to turn “The Great Gatsby” into a clown car of passionate entanglements skids off the road when calamity is meant to strike. The second-act twists play out with the frenzy of a nighttime soap by Aaron Spelling, without any of the campy self-awareness. There is no ghastly reckoning with the follies of hedonism, just a rapid succession of abrupt ends.

Fitzgerald’s chic but sobering cautionary tale has been bubbling up frequently onstage since entering the public domain in 2021: There was an immersive take in a Manhattan hotel last year, and a pre-Broadway tryout of “ Gatsby ,” with music by Florence Welch, begins performances in Boston next month. There’s never been a bad time for the author’s sidelong glance at capitalism and the single-minded pursuit of pleasure — provided one isn’t already blinded by them.
