Important Notes:

As a finance and accounting student looking to get good grades, it is essential to develop new ideas and experiment with existing finance and accounting theories – i.e., to add value and interest in your research topic.

The finance and accounting field is vast and interrelated to many other academic disciplines like civil engineering ,  construction ,  law , engineering management , healthcare , mental health , artificial intelligence , tourism , physiotherapy , sociology , management , project management , and nursing . That is why it is imperative to create a project management dissertation topic that is articular, sound, and actually solves a practical problem that may be rampant in the field.

We can’t stress how important it is to develop a logical research topic based on your entire research. There are several significant downfalls to getting your topic wrong; your supervisor may not be interested in working on it, the topic has no academic creditability, the research may not make logical sense, and there is a possibility that the study is not viable.

This impacts your time and efforts in  writing your dissertation  as you may end up in the cycle of rejection at the initial stage of the dissertation. That is why we recommend reviewing existing research to develop a topic, taking advice from your supervisor, and even asking for help in this particular stage of your dissertation.

Keeping our advice in mind while developing a research topic will allow you to pick one of the best finance and accounting dissertation topics that fulfil your requirement of writing a research paper and adds to the body of knowledge.

Therefore, it is recommended that when finalizing your dissertation topic, you read recently published literature to identify gaps in the research that you may help fill.

Remember- dissertation topics need to be unique, solve an identified problem, be logical, and be practically implemented. Please look at some of our sample finance and accounting dissertation topics to get an idea for your own dissertation.

Fang, Li. "Do media help deter financial misreporting?" Thesis, The George Washington University, 2015. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3722657.

This paper investigates the role of the media as an external deterrence mechanism for firms’ aggressive reporting practices. Using a sample of firms that filed income-decreasing annual restatements due to financial frauds, irregularities, and misrepresentations between 2000 and 2011, and a matched control sample, I provide evidence that the more media coverage a firm receives in the previous year, the lower likelihood of subsequent misstatements. I then distinguish positive tone from negative tone to examine whether the tone of media content affects firms’ incentives to misreport. I find that negative tone of media articles is significantly negatively associated with the likelihood of subsequent misstatements, whereas positive tone does not appear to be significant. This paper further examines the relative importance of the deterrence roles that the media and analysts play in firms’ misstatement behavior, and find that the media play a more important role than financial analysts, although the roles of these two mechanisms are overlapping to some degree.

Wastewater Surveillance Could Mitigate Disease Outbreaks in Jails, Improve Community Health

Rollins researchers collecting wastewater samples at Fulton County Jail.

By Rob Spahr

An innovative partnership between infectious disease researchers and the Fulton County Jail has produced insight that could help detect and track future disease outbreaks.

A study of samples of the jail’s wastewater collected nearly every week between October 2021 and May 2022—led by researchers at the Rollins School of Public Health and recently published by the CDC’s open access peer-reviewed journal   Emerging Infectious Diseases —found a correlation between the percentage of positive COVID-19 tests among jail residents and the COVID-19 levels detected in the wastewater.

These results from the feasibility study show that wastewater-based surveillance could not only help detect and mitigate future COVID-19 outbreaks, but also serve as an indicator of other viral infection trends in jail settings.

“We knew the technology worked in college dormitories, but jails are settings that needed to be studied,” says Anne Spaulding, MD, associate professor of epidemiology. “Because so many people pass through jails, protecting the health of detained individuals impacts the health of entire communities.”

Taking weekly wastewater samples from four manhole sites outside of the jail buildings enabled the researchers to circumvent common barriers to infectious disease screenings within jail settings, such as access issues and hesitancy of jail residents.

“Being the largest pre-trial detention center in Georgia, we are hopeful that the data Emory collected during this study will provide valuable findings to benefit other facilities across the country,” says Fulton County Sheriff Patrick “Pat” Labat. “We are committed to community partnerships and maintaining the health of those in our care and custody.”

The study was funded through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Institutes of Health and was cost neutral to the county.
