Wayne State University forces pro-Palestinian protesters off campus

Encampment was being cleared thursday morning.

Cassidy Johncox , Senior News Editor

DETROIT – Wayne State University forced an encampment of pro-Palestinian protesters off of the Detroit campus early Thursday morning after “many good-faith efforts to reach a different conclusion,” officials said.

Wayne State students and faculty began their spring semester remotely on May 28 because of an “ongoing public safety issue,” the university reported. University officials were referencing a group of protesters who formed an encampment on May 23 in protest of the war in Gaza .

The Detroit university was one of the latest U.S. schools to erect a pro-Palestinian encampment in an effort to push their institution to divest from Israel and companies that support Israel’s military efforts in Gaza. Protesting students had hoped to come to an agreement on divestment in exchange for the encampment’s removal.

At 5:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 30, university police told the protesters that they had to leave. Officers made repeated announcements to give protesters time to collect their belongings and leave, officials reported.

“Many people left,” university President Kimberly Andrews Espy said in a statement Thursday. There were still some people actively protesting while our cameras and crews were at the school as of 7:30 a.m.

At least 13 people were arrested Thursday as police cleared the encampment. Arrests took place throughout the morning as protesters appeared to clash with police.

The university had hired crews to physically dismantle the large encampment and clear all of the tents and objects from campus after protesters were removed from the area.

The move to clear the encampment was made due to ”multiple legal, health, and safety challenges that disrupted our operations,” the university president said. Since the encampment was established, school officials had maintained it was a trespass and had told protesters to dismantle it.

University officials said they made repeated attempts to work with protest organizers to “find a path to dismantle the encampment.” One of those attempts included offering a meeting with the university president and other officials -- but protesters declined that offer, saying they wanted a public forum.

Organizers told Local 4 on Thursday that they were weren’t prepared to meet with the president when the offer was made. Officials wanted them to meet “right then and there,” but protesters were up all night and tired after being told there would be a raid, according to a protester.

Protesters reportedly waited for a member of the Board of Governors to meet with them Wednesday afternoon, but a protester said the member never showed up. The Wayne State president did not mention any plans for divestment in her statement Thursday morning.

Protesters were not being allowed on campus as the encampment was being cleared Thursday morning. Classes at Wayne State were to stay remote through at least Thursday. Officials said a decision on Friday’s schedule would come soon.

All events on campus were canceled on May 28 until further notice.

Authorities similarly broke up a weekslong pro-Palestinian encampment last week at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Encampments at other universities, like Rutgers and Brown, came to mutual ends after the institutions negotiated with protesters. At Brown, university leaders agreed to vote on divesting from companies that support Israel in exchange for removing the encampment.

The University of Michigan, however, made no such deal. University President Santa Ono instead said that the university will “support multiple opportunities to discuss and debate complicated issues, including the war in the Middle East,” over the next year.

Ann Arbor protesters told Local 4 that the removal of their encampment does not mark the end of their mission.

---> The Israel-Hamas war is testing whether campuses are sacrosanct places for speech and protest

Palestinians in Gaza have been subject to incessant Israeli bombing, displacement, and a lack of food and resources since Oct. 7, 2023. The latest fighting between Israel and Hamas, the group that rules the Gaza territory, was trigged by Hamas’ surprise attack in Israel that October day, in which Hamas took about 250 hostages and killed about 1,200 people, according to the Israeli government.

More than 36,000 people have been killed in Gaza since the fighting began in October, the Gaza Health Ministry reports. Tens of thousands more people have been wounded in Gaza.

Israel still has support from the U.S. , its largest ally, plus several other Western countries amid the war -- though that support has slightly waned as the number of civilian casualties continues to rise in Gaza. The U.S. and other allies have warned Israel against an attack in the city of Rafah, where displaced civilians are seeking refuge amid the war.

Israel recently launched strikes on Rafah , killing at least 16 Palestinians as of Tuesday, according to first responders. U.S. President Joe Biden’s administration has said that launching an offensive attack in Rafah would cross a major line.

In a recent move, International Criminal Court prosecutor Karim Khan has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his defense minister, and three Hamas leaders of war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip and in Israel. The International Court of Justice last week ordered Israel to halt its military action in Rafah, but the court can’t enforce that order.

Global aid group asks warring forces to respect its neutrality with 24 of its aid workers killed

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies asked state forces and combatants Thursday to respect its neutrality and work of delivering humanitarian help to the most destitute in war and other high-risk zones, saying 24 of its aid workers had been killed so far this year mostly in the Gaza Strip.

IFRC President Kate Forbes, who is visiting the Philippines, said in a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that two of her group’s aid workers, Palestine Red Crescent Society paramedics Haitham Tubasi and Suhail Hassouna, were killed Wednesday in the latest incident when their ambulance was hit west of Rafah, Gaza’s southernmost city.

It was not immediately clear what hit the ambulance, which was clearly marked with the Palestine Red Crescent Society’s emblem. The two paramedics were on duty when they were killed in the Tal Al-Sultan area in Rafah, the IFRC said in a statement.

“I am heartbroken,” Forbes said. “This is not okay. This must stop.”

Palestinians reported heavy fighting in the border city Wednesday and Israel’s military said it seized control of the entire length of Gaza’s border with Egypt.

A Palestinian flag flies next to a Slovenian, center, and a European Union flag, right, at the government building in Ljubljana, Slovenia, Thursday, May 30, 2024. Slovenia’s government has endorsed a motion to recognize a Palestinian state and sent it to parliament for approval. Prime Minister Robert Golob's ruling liberal coalition has a comfortable majority in the 90-member assembly and the vote should be formality. The decision by the Slovenian government on Thursday comes just two days after Spain, Norway and Ireland recognized a Palestinian state. It was a move that was slammed by Israel. (AP Photo)

The fighting in Rafah has already forced more than 1 million Palestinians to flee, most of whom had already been displaced in the war between Israel and Hamas. They’re seeking refuge in makeshift tent camps and other war-ravaged areas, where they lack shelter, food, water and other essentials for survival, according to the United Nations.

Forbes told The Associated Press in an interview in Manila Wednesday that governments should act responsibly and abide by the rules of armed conflict, including the Geneva Conventions , referring to the international treaties drawn up after World War II which contain the rules to prevent war atrocities.

“My appeal to the governments would be, if your signatures are in the Geneva Conventions, abide by them,” Forbes said. “If those are being enforced, we can do our work even in high-conflict zones or disasters.”

“We are neutral. We’re here to give aid,” she said. “We want to make life (better) for those who are impacted by either disease, natural disasters or geopolitical conflicts. We need to get them basic humanitarian aid and restore their human dignity. That’s our job.

Since being elected president of the IFRC in December, Forbes, a former American businesswoman, who has served as a Red Cross volunteer for more than four decades, has been to the frontlines of disaster-response. She visited Rafah in February. “I have nightmares of what I’ve seen,” she said.

Forbes joined growing calls for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid access to Gaza, saying these were “absolutely imperative” to ease the horrific sufferings of civilians trapped in the seven-month conflict.

“We have to have a government solution to get a ceasefire so that we can get access and then we will give aid to both sides,” she said.

“I’ve said this is both a sprint and a marathon. We need to get aid in Gaza immediately for people who have malnutrition, there’s not adequate sanitation,” she said. “But it’s going to be a marathon in that there’s going to be aid that’s going to be needed for decades to repair Gaza and the people there.”

Israeli airstrike in Rafah kills 12 Palestinians, wounds others

JERUSALEM − Israeli forces killed at least 12 Palestinians in a dawn airstrike on Rafah in southern  Gaza  on Thursday and fighting raged in several other areas of the coastal enclave, Gaza medics said.

Israel pressed on with its offensive on Rafah a day after saying its forces had taken control of a  buffer zone  along the nearby border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt, giving it effective authority over Gaza's entire land frontier.

It said the buffer zone's capture had cut off a route used by the Palestinian Islamist militant group Hamas to smuggle arms into Gaza during more than seven months of war, which has laid waste to much of the territory and raised fears of famine.

Gaza medical sources said the 12 Palestinians, whom it said were civilians, had been killed and an unspecified number of others wounded in an Israeli airstrike as they tried to recover the body of a civilian in the center of Rafah.

Another Palestinian civilian was killed in an airstrike on Al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City in the north of the densely populated enclave, the medics said.

Israel reported clashes in southern, central and northern Gaza but did not immediately comment on the reported deaths in Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians took refuge earlier in the war.

Communication services were cut off in Rafah, Palestinian telecommunications company Jawa said in a statement.

Israel has kept up raids on Rafah despite an order by the  International Court of Justice , the top U.N. court, to halt the attacks.

Israel said its forces had killed 300 Palestinian gunmen in the city since May 6, when it launched what it has called a push to root out Hamas fighters and rescue hostages. The ICJ also called for the release of hostages held in Gaza by Hamas.

More than 36,000 Palestinians have been killed in Israel's air and land war across all of Gaza, with 53 of those killed in the past 24 hours, the Hamas-run enclave's health ministry said.

Israel launched its offensive after Hamas fighters crossed from Gaza into southern Israel on Oct. 7 last year, killed 1,200 people and abducted more than 250, according to Israeli tallies.

The Israeli military said a soldier had been killed in fighting in northern Gaza, bringing Israel's combat losses to 292 since its first Gaza ground incursion on Oct. 20.

Tunnels, arms and explosives

In an overnight call with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant underlined the continuing importance of Israeli operations in the Rafah area "due to concrete information regarding hostages held there."

"Minister Gallant detailed IDF activities in the Rafah area where 20 terror tunnels have been identified," the Israeli Defense Ministry said.

The Israeli military also said in a statement that tunnels used by Hamas for smuggling and moving fighters underground had been discovered during the latest raids, as well as large amounts of arms and explosives.

The Israeli statements did not say where the smuggling tunnels ran from. An Israeli official said on May 15 there were 50 tunnels connecting Rafah to the Sinai in Egypt, and voiced concern that Hamas could use them to smuggle senior operatives or hostages into Egyptian territory. Egypt on Wednesday denied the existence of any such tunnels.

The United States, Israel's closest ally, reiterated its opposition to a major ground offensive in Rafah on Tuesday but said it  did not believe  such an operation was under way.

The U.S. has, with Egypt and Qatar, been involved in efforts to mediate indirect talks between Israel and Hamas on arranging a cease-fire and the release of the remaining hostages. Those talks have stalled, with both sides blaming the other for the lack of progress.

Hamas said on Thursday they would not continue negotiations during the "aggression," but were ready for  a "complete agreement"  if Israel halts the war. Israel has rejected past Hamas offers as insufficient and said it is determined to wipe out a group bent on its destruction.

As the war drags on, malnutrition has become widespread in Gaza as  aid deliveries  have slowed to a trickle, and the United Nations has warned of incipient famine.

Offering one possible lifeline, the Israeli military has  lifted a ban  on the sale of food to Gaza from Israel and the occupied West Bank since the start of the Rafah operation, Palestinian officials, businessmen and international aid workers told Reuters.

Army authorities gave Gazan traders the green light to resume their purchases from Israeli and Palestinian suppliers of food such as fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy goods this month, the people said.

The conflict has also stoked violence in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, another territory where Palestinians seek statehood.

Israel said two soldiers were killed in an overnight hit-and-run by a Palestinian motorist in the West Bank city of Nablus. There was no immediate claim of responsibility from Palestinian factions.

Israeli security forces killed a Palestinian while carrying out an arrest raid in the occupied West Bank on Thursday.

On another front, the leader of Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis − who have been attacking ships in the Red Sea region, they say in solidarity with the Palestinians − said they would escalate their operations "in quality and quantity."

Biden details Israel's Gaza ceasefire proposal, Hamas responds positively

Hamas on friday said it "considers positively" an israeli roadmap towards a full gaza ceasefire announced by us president joe biden, who urged an end to the almost eight-month war..

Listen to Story

year 7 forces homework

  • Biden describes three-phase Israeli proposal for ceasefire in Gaza
  • The proposal has won positive initial reaction from Hamas
  • Biden says "it's time for this war to end"

US President Joe Biden on Friday laid out what he described as a three-phase Israeli proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza in return for the release of Israeli hostages, saying "it's time for this war to end" and winning a positive initial reaction from Hamas.

In this phase, Hamas and Israel would negotiate a permanent ceasefire that Biden said would last "as long has Hamas lives up to its commitments." If negotiations took more than six weeks, the temporary ceasefire would extend while they continued.

In the second phase, Biden said there would be an exchange for all remaining living hostages, including male soldiers, Israeli forces would withdraw from Gaza and the permanent ceasefire would begin.

year 7 forces homework

Hamas, which Biden said received the proposal from Qatar, released a statement reacting positively.

Hamas said it was ready to engage "positively and in a constructive manner" with any proposal based on a permanent ceasefire, withdrawal of Israeli forces, the reconstruction of Gaza, a return of those displaced, and a "genuine" prisoner swap deal if Israel "clearly announces commitment to such deal".

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said he had authorized his negotiating team to present the deal, "while insisting that the war will not end until all of its goals are achieved, including the return of all our hostages and the destruction of Hamas' military and governmental capabilities."

Separately, the Israeli military said its forces have ended operations in north Gaza's Jabalia area after days of intense fighting, while probing further into Rafah in south Gaza to target what they say is the last major Hamas redoubt.

The conflict began on Oct. 7 when gunmen led by the Islamist Palestinian group stormed into southern Israel on motorcycles, paragliders and four-wheel drive vehicles, killing 1200 people and abducting more than 250, according to Israeli tallies.

Israel then invaded the Gaza Strip in what Netanyahu has called an effort to destroy Hamas, the militant Palestinian group that seized control of the area from the Fatah Palestinian faction in a violent struggle in 2007.

AN INDEFINITE WAR

In his speech, Biden called on the Israeli leadership to resist pressure from those in Israel who were pushing for the war to go on "indefinitely," a group he said included some in the Israeli governing coalition.

"They want to occupy Gaza. They want to keep fighting for years and hostages are not a priority for them. Well, I've urged leadership in Israel to stand behind this deal, despite whatever pressure comes," he added.

He implored Israelis not to miss the chance for a ceasefire.

"As the only American president who has ever gone to Israel at a time of war, as someone who just sent the U.S. forces to directly defend Israel when it was attacked by Iran, I ask you to take a step back, think what will happen if this moment is lost," he said. "We can't lose this moment."

The Gaza war has put Biden in a political bind.

On the one hand, he has long been a staunch supporter of Israel and would like to ensure funding and support from the pro-Israel community in the United States in his Nov. 5 election rematch against Republican former President Donald Trump.

On the other, progressive elements of Biden's Democratic Party have grown increasingly angry at the president for the suffering the conflict has caused civilians in Gaza.

Palestinian health authorities estimate more than 36,280 people have been killed in Gaza since Israel attacked, and the United Nations says over a million people face "catastrophic" levels of hunger as famine takes hold in parts of the enclave.

Signaling a US effort to build support for the proposal, the State Department said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken spoke with his Jordanian, Saudi and Turkish counterparts.

Speaking to the Turkish foreign minister, "he emphasized that Hamas should accept the deal and that every country with a relationship with Hamas should press it to do so without delay,' the State Department said.

In a sign of support for Israel despite the partisan divide in the United States, leaders of the Democratic-led US Senate and of the Republican-led House of Representatives on Friday invited Netanyahu to address a joint meeting of Congress.

The week has been dominated by the fallout from an Israeli air strike in Rafah on Sunday that killed 45 Palestinians.
