Odia Essay on the Oriya Language: The Essential Odia Essays (Odia Rachana) are intended to meet the growing demand of pupils in Primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools and colleges. Conscious efforts have been made to carefully choose essays on a variety of subjects that are well within the knowledge and experience range of the pupils.

The Odia essays have been presented interestingly in a simple, plain, and idiomatic language containing vocabulary and structural expressions they are familiar with. Meanings of difficult words supposed to be above their vocabulary horizons have been given in their mother tongue. The purpose is to enrich their vocabulary to enable them to express their feelings and thoughts in a better way.

It is important to know that an Odia essay (Odia Rachana) is not always a complete account of the subject matter. There are no rules about how long or short an Odia essay should be. The pupils at the secondary level are, however, supposed to write an essay in 250 to 300 words on the suggested outlines. All that is important is that the essay must be interesting, well-presented, and free of errors.

Books: Odisha Board Textbooks

Benefits of Writing Essays

Three kinds of essays namely descriptive, narrative, and reflective have been dealt with in this book to give the pupils an idea about how each of such essays can be written with ease and facility. Writing an essay on a given topic needs careful planning and appropriate communicative skills.

Pupils are advised to develop each point of the given outlines into a paragraph in their own words. They may, however, show their ability to write sentences containing clauses, phrases, and other elements they learned somewhere. What is significant is that the use of such phrases, words, and clauses should be appropriate and relevant to the topic.

The beginning paragraph of the essay should be impressive and aim at introducing the topic sustaining the interest of the readers. The last paragraph should sum up the writer’s views on the topic and should equally be lively and impressive. Each paragraph should contain one thought and should lead to the next one. All the paragraphs taken together should be a composite whole instead of being segregated parts.

Last but not least, meticulous care should be taken to revise the Odia essay to correct the errors and weed out irrelevant points. Letter writing, on the other hand, calls for a different skill. Its importance is always felt in our everyday life when we need to write personal letters to friends and relatives, business letters to industrial.

Ans. There is a deep impact of Portuguese culture on Goan life. The baker is also a part of this culture. They are known as paders in Goa. When the author was a child, one could see the traditional baker in the village. He used to be a friend of the children. He visited the house twice a day. Children arose with the sound of thud and jingle of the bamboo in the morning. They would run to greet him. Children were fond of sweet bread and the bread bangles. The ladies of the house bought the bread. Bakers were professional and it was a family business. It was a profitable business and most of the bakers were plump. They had their peculiar traditional dress called Kabai.

Q2. Not enough can be said to show how important a baker can be for a village. How were the services of the baker required on various occasions?

How did the baker become synonymous with celebrations and occasions in Goa? (CBSE QUESTION BANK)

Why was the baker’s furnace essential in a traditional Goan village?

Ans. A baker is very important and essential for a Goan village. He does not merely represent a profession but a highly admired Portuguese tradition. His breads are essential on each and every occasion. Marriage gifts are meaningless without the sweet bread known as the bol. Cakes and bolinhas are a must for Christmas as well as other festivals. A mother prepares sandwiches on her daughter’s engagements. Meals are incomplete without bakery goods. Bakery is an important part of Goan food and culture. The baker, known as Pader, enjoys the respect and love of the people. The children consider him their friend, companion and guide. They have continued their family profession. It is a highly profitable business. Thus, the presence of the baker’s furnace in the Goan village is absolutely necessary.

Q3. Rodrigues describes his childhood and the bakers of Goa. What does he remember so fondly about these bakers?

What according to the author, do the elders of Goa think fondly about the past?

Ans. Rodrigues describes his childhood and old Portuguese days and their famous loaves of bread. The bakers are known as paders in Goa. The writer remembers a baker fondly. The baker would come at least twice a day to sell his bread. The jingling thud of his bamboo would wake the children and they would run to meet and greet him. The children longed for his visit for those bread-bangles or sometimes for sweet bread of special make. They would try to sneak and peep into the baskets to pick their favourite sweet bread. The baker would greet the lady of the house with good morning. Then he would place his basket on the vertical bamboo. He collected the bill at the end of the month.

Q4. Baking was considered an important and a profitable profession in a traditional Goan village. Explain.

Ans. In olden days, Goa was very much influenced by Portuguese culture. Baking was considered an essential and profitable profession in a traditional Goan village. The Portuguese were famous for preparing the loaves of bread. Baking was the traditional family work and was passed on to the children too. The villagers were very fond of the sweet bread known as “bol”. The marriage gifts were meaningless without it. Cakes and bolinhas formed an important part of each celebration. At various occasions like Christmas and other festivals the bakers would collect the bill at the end of month. Baking was a profitable profession in olden days.

Q5. Bread and cakes were an integral part of Goan life, in olden days. Based on your reading of the “A Baker from Goa”, describe the Goan culture.

Bread and cakes were essential to Goan life in older days. Describe the memories that the author recollects about good old Portuguese days and their loaves of bread.

Ans . Goa in west India, called golden Goa by the Portuguese, has an important Portuguese colony in Asia. The Portuguese were driven by their desire to spread their faith to the local population. Thus the culture of Goa is deeply influenced by Portuguese culture. Modern day Goa, a state of India, is a quaint blend of tradition, religion and modernity. Hindu temples are as much a part of Goa as are Christian monuments. The culture of Goa today is a synthesis of Portuguese and Indian cultures. It is one of the most attractive cultures in India. A Goan is said to be born with music in his blood and music literally accompanies him from the cradle to the grave. Musical traditions run in generations.

Q6. The custom of baking bread is closely associated with Goan culture. Explain/Discuss, with reference to the chapter “A baker from Goa”.

Ans. Bread forms an essential part of the Goan culture. There is no party or festival without bread. Marriage gifts are meaningless without the sweet bread known as the bot. Any party or a feast loses its charm without bread. A baker is very important for a village. The lady of the house must prepare sandwiches on the occasion of her daughter’s engagement. Cakes and bolinhas are a must for Christmas as well as other festivals. Thus, the presence of the baker’s furnace in the village is absolutely essential. Loaves of bread are very popular in Goa and are a staple food even in remote villages. The bread has health benefits. There are still a few small bakeries left in some of the smaller towns.

Two Stories about Flying Extra Questions and Answers English First Flight

Question 3. (i) What were the ways the seagull had thought of to join his family? (ii) Did he try any one of them? Answer: (i) The seagull thought of joining his family without having to fly. He ran from one end of the ledge to the other. The ledge ended in a steep fall in precipice. He thought of walking upto them but there was a deep chasm between him and them. (ii) No, he didn’t try anyone of them.

Question 4. Did the seagull think the sea was like a land? Pick out the words from the text that suggest this. Answer: Yes, the seagull thought the sea was like a land. He landed on the sea. When his legs sank into it, he screamed with fear and tried to rise again flapping his wings. This clearly indicates that he thought the sea was like a land.

Question 5. (i) When did the seagull’s flight begin? (ii) Where did it end? Answer: (i)His flight began when he was falling outwards and downwards into space. His wings spread outwards. Now, he was not falling headlong. He was moving gradually downwards and outwards. (ii) His flight ended floating on the sea.

Question 6. When did the seagull get over his fear of the water? Answer: The seagull thought the sea was like a land. When he landed on the sea, his feet sank into it. He was seized with fear. He was too tired to rise again. His belly touched the water and he sank no further. Now, he was floating on the sea. He had got over his fear of the water.

Question 7. Do you sympathise with the seagull? Give reasons. Answer: Flying is a natural instinct of birds. But the young seagull develops a fright of flight. We sympathise with him because he has to suffer a lot before he gets over his fear of flying. He has to bear the taunts of his family. He has to go without food for twenty-four hours.

Question 8. How did the seagull express his excitement when he saw his mother bringing food for him? Answer: The seagull was very hungry. When he saw his mother bringing food for him, he was greatly excited. He expressed his excitement by uttering a joyful scream. He leaned out eagerly. He tapped the rock with his feet. He tried to get nearer to her as she flew across.

Question 9. How did the young seagull’s parents teach him the art of flying? Answer: Birds have a natural instinct to fly. However, some birds, like the young seagull in the story are afraid to fly. Then their parents teach them how to fly. The seagull’s parents fly about with their children curveting and banking and soaring and diving and thus, perfecting them in the art of flying.

Two Stories about Flying Extra Questions and Answers Long Answer Type

Question 1. Why did the seagull’s father and mother threaten him and persuade him to fly? How did they do it? Do you think it is a good parenting? Should the parents threaten their wards for learning? Answer: The young seagull was scared to fly. He was afraid of the vast exposure of the sea beneath him. His siblings were courageous and had learnt to fly. His parents constantly encouraged him to fly but he ‘ was too scared to fly. He was left alone without food. He was desperate with hunger. He expected his parents to feed him. But it was a threatening from them. He would die of hunger if he did not fly. The mother tempted him with a fish within his reach but not closer to him.

He ultimately fell to temptation and dived into the sea and finally succeeded. Yes, it was a good parenting. Parents should not pamper their kids by spoon feeding. They should make them independent. They should learn to do their work. Parents’ strictness in making a child learn a skill should not be taken as a threat. It is necessary and in favour of the child. In my opinion, without threat, the seagull would not have learnt to fly. He would have starved to death.

Question 2. ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child.’ Do you think the young seagull was not ready to fly due to lenient treatment by his family in the beginning? What made him fly later on? What is the role of motivation in learning? Answer: ‘Spare the rod and spoil the child’. No, I don’t agree with this statement. No learning can take place under fear. It is the motivation that makes learning easy. The seagull was too scared to fly. It was a new thing for him. When he saw the vast sea, he could not take courage and fly. He was too young and was being taken care of by his parents. It was natural that his parents were feeding him. It can’t be called a lenient treatment.

He was, no doubt, threatened by his parents, but it was just to make him realise how important it was to fly. It was a question of his survival. The mother seagull tempted him with a piece of fish. He fell to temptation and dived into the vast sea. He was encouraged by his family and he learnt the art of flying. Motivation, encouragement and family support help in learning. The rod must be spared.

Question 3. Fear and lack of confidence stop one from learning new things. Do you agree? How did these two traits of the young seagull make him coward? How did he overcome these shortcomings? Answer: Yes, it is true that fear and lack of confidence stop us from learning new things. The young seagull lacked the value of courage and confidence in his character. He was the last member, in his family, to learn the art of flight. He was too scared to fly. His parents and other siblings encouraged him constantly. When it did not work, they scolded him for his cowardice. The mother seagull tricked him and tempted him with a piece of fish. He was kept hungry. His hunger and need for food forced him to dive into the sea.

Though he was not willing to learn the art of flying yet he was tricked by his family. Once he dived, his fear disappeared and he enjoyed his first flight. It is a fact that unless we try for something and overcome our fear we can’t learn anything. Confidence and motivation are two important traits that make any learning possible.

Question 4. Does the situation of the young seagull arouse sympathy for him? Does sympathy always help? Do you think providing food to the young seagull out of sympathy would have helped him? Answer: The young seagull was afraid of flying. He thought that his wings could not support him. He pretended to be falling asleep and called his mother for food. He was hungry but could not muster the courage to jump down and fly. He was scared. All his family members had left him and taunted him for his cowardice. In fact, they wanted him to take his first flight. He should have overcome his fear of flight by now.

Yes, I sympathise with the seagull. It is not an easy task to take the first leap. One has to be confident and bold. All are not equally brave. The young seagull was ready to jump but he needed some time. Ultimately, he mustered the courage and overcame his fear of flight.

No, sympathy does not always help. It makes a person dependent. We should not give a fish to a hungry man out of sympathy, we should teach him how to catch a fish for food. If the young seagull had been provided food, he would never have learnt the art of flying. He would have become a crippled parasite on his family.

A Gentleman in Moscow Book Club Questions

  • In A Gentleman in Moscow, the protagonist Count Rostov’s relationship with the precocious girl Nina significantly shapes his life within the confines of the Metropol Hotel. Their friendship, initiated by Nina’s bold curiosity, introduces the Count to the hidden layers of the hotel and helps him adapt to his new environment . How does this relationship reflect on the novel’s theme of personal growth and adaptability to change, especially considering how it influences the Count’s subsequent relationship with Nina’s daughter Sofia?
  • Central to the novel is Count Rostov’s journey of discovering oneself under the constraints of house arrest. Over the years, he goes from being a nobleman enjoying a suite in the Metropol Hotel to a prisoner confined to a small room in the belfry and eventually, a headwaiter. Discuss how this transformation underscores the novel’s exploration of dignity, purpose, and the human spirit in the face of adversarial circumstances.
  • The Count forms deep relationships with various characters, each coming from different walks of life, and each of these relationships has a profound impact on him. From his initial interaction with the young and intelligent Nina Kulikova to his romantic relationship with Anna Urbanova, he engages with a myriad of personalities that enrich his worldview and make him more empathetic. With these relationships in mind, how does the Count’s array of friendships illustrate the universality and diversity of human experiences within the confines of the Metropol Hotel?
  • The Metropol Hotel, its various guests, and its staff from different social classes serve as a microcosm of the larger societal and political changes happening in Russia during the Count’s imprisonment. This environment significantly contributes to his understanding and acceptance of the evolving times. How does the hotel and its inhabitants provide a framework for the Count’s journey, revealing the contradictions and ironies of the era and how do these insights play into the Count’s philosophical musings on life, change, and purpose?
  • The Count’s relationship with his friend Mishka evolves significantly throughout the narrative, given their contrasting political ideologies and life circumstances. Mishka’s experiences as a poet, supporter of the Bolshevik Party, and his eventual exile provide a stark counterpoint to the Count’s existence within the Metropol. How does their friendship underscore the novel’s broader themes of loyalty, intellectual freedom, and personal convictions in the face of ideological and societal changes?
  • The motif of confinement and escape recurs throughout the novel, from Count Rostov’s house arrest to Nina’s explorations of the hotel with her passkey and finally to Sofia’s escape to Paris. This intertwines with the broader themes of personal freedom, identity, and resilience. How does the novel use these instances of confinement and escape to juxtapose the personal and political, the mundane and the extraordinary, highlighting the individual’s struggle against and within the changing sociopolitical landscape?
  • In the novel, Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov has been described as an individual who undergoes significant personal growth and development throughout the story. Born to luxury, he is confined in the Metropol Hotel for most of his life, but this very restriction pushes him to befriend a range of characters, broadening his understanding of humanity. It leads to a shift in his values, from prioritizing “appointments with bankers” to appreciating the beauty of “cups of tea and friendly chats”. Considering these circumstances and the transformation that the Count undergoes, how does his character challenge and redefine the concept of freedom and confinement?
  • The Metropol Hotel, with all its intricacies, plays a significant role in the Count’s life. It is not merely a setting but a character in itself that molds the Count’s life in its unique way. The Count’s learning about the inner workings of the hotel, thanks to Nina’s passkey, gives him a new vision of the place he calls home. Considering this, how does the Metropol Hotel act as a metaphor for the larger world outside, and how does it contribute to the narrative structure and thematic depth of the novel?
  • Mikhail Fyodorovich Mindich, known as Mishka, has a profound impact on the Count’s life. Their friendship spans their differences in background and personalities, with Mishka’s passionate, poetic soul contrasting with the Count’s aristocratic demeanor. An important point to note is that the poem which saves the Count from execution is written by Mishka, showing his direct influence on the Count’s fate. What’s your take on the way Mishka’s character and his relationship with the Count illuminate the intersections of personal friendships, artistic expression, and political revolution in the novel?
  • One of the recurring themes in the novel is the nature of societal change and how it impacts individuals. The Bolshevik revolution and its aftermath lead to a dramatic upheaval in Russian society, as centuries-old traditions and institutions are replaced by a new ideology. The characters are confronted with the need to adapt to these changes or risk becoming irrelevant. While the Count adapts to his new circumstances, other characters like Mishka struggle with this societal transformation, leading to tragic consequences. What does Towles seem to be suggesting about the process of societal change and its impact on individuals, particularly in relation to Mishka’s tragic fate, and how does this reflect on broader historical transformations throughout the years?
