4 Tips for Creating a Resume Using Pages

Apple’s default word processing app, Pages comes with a set of useful tools and features that allows you to easily create documents like resumes with ease. These tips will make that process much easier for you.

1. Get a Better Template

When creating a resume in Pages, you get to choose from a set of default resume/cv templates that comes with the app. Needless to say, you should avoid using these default templates if you want to ever win a job interview.

The default resume templates included in Pages are way too outdated and have terrible designs that will only hurt your chances of getting a job.

Thankfully you can download and use third-party templates made by professionals instead. Be sure to grab a free or a premium resume template and upload it in Pages to create your resume.

2. Use Proper Formatting

Formatting the paragraphs, adding bullet points, dividing information to different sections, and designing the content layout of the resume is the most important part of making your resume look more professional.

If you’re using a great resume template then you probably won’t have to worry about the content formatting. However, it’s always best to optimize the layout to match your industry and your skills as well as your personality.

3. Change to a Professional Font

The font you use play a key role in your resume design. While there are many great default fonts you can use in your resume, using a unique or a premium font can make your entire resume look unique and stand out from the crowd.

4. Use Persistent and Minimal Design

Try to keep a minimal overall design. Use fewer colors to avoid making your resume look amateurish and be persistent when using fonts, headings, and even when writing the resume copy.

Use templates in Pages on Mac

A template is a predesigned set of elements for creating a document—a layout, placeholder text and images, and so on. Placeholders give you an idea of what a document created with this template might look like when you use its text and object styles. Every time you create a new document, you choose a template from the template chooser (shown below) as a starting point.

The template chooser. A sidebar on the left lists template categories you can click to filter options. On the right are thumbnails of predesigned templates arranged in rows by category, starting with Basic at the top and followed by Reports and Books—Portrait. The Language and Region pop-up menu is in the bottom-left corner, and Cancel and Create buttons are in the bottom-right corner.

After you open a template, you can add your own text, replace placeholder graphics or delete them, and add new objects (tables, charts, text boxes, shapes, lines, and media).

Pages templates are designed either for word processing or for page layout . For example, the Essay and School Newsletter templates, and book templates in portrait orientation, are for word processing. The Tab Flyer, Museum Brochure, and book templates in landscape orientation are for page layout. After you begin creating your document, you can’t switch to a different template. You can, however, convert the document from word processing to page layout, and vice versa.

Pages templates are designed to use information from your My Card in Contacts. For information on setting up your My Card, see Set up your My Card in Contacts .

You may be prompted to authorize Pages to use information from your contacts when opening a template. To authorize, click OK in the dialog. If you don’t want to authorize the use of your contact information, click Don’t Allow. For more information on allowing apps to use your contact information, see Allow apps to use your contact information .

Choose a template

Open Pages and click the New Document button in the dialog, or choose File > New from the Pages menu at the top of the screen.

In the template chooser, scroll to find a template for the type of document (or envelope) you want to create, then double-click the template to open it.

To create a document that’s mainly text: Choose one of the Basic templates (these are all word-processing templates).

To create a brochure, poster, or something with a more complex layout: Choose a template that looks closest to what you want to create. The choices include a variety of word-processing and page layout templates.

To create an interactive book: Choose a book template. Books in EPUB format can be opened in Apple Books and other ebook readers.

To create a document with the formatting of a different language: Choose the language from the pop-up menu in the bottom-left corner of the template chooser, then choose a template. See Format a document for another language .

Some templates aren’t downloaded to your computer until you choose them or open a document that uses the template. If your connection is slow or you’re offline when this happens, placeholder images in the document may appear at a lower resolution until you’re online again or the template finishes downloading.

If you need help creating your own document from the template, see Create your first document .

Identify the template type

the Document radio button

Check to see if the Document Body checkbox is selected.

If the checkbox is selected, it’s set up for word processing. If not, it’s for page layout.

Convert to a word-processing document

When you convert a page layout document to a word-processing document, any existing objects, including text boxes, remain in the document. If text boxes are layered with objects, you need to adjust the layering and text wrap in the converted document.

Do one of the following:

Choose File > Convert to Word Processing (from the File menu at the top of your screen).

how to get more resume templates on pages

Important: If you change your mind, press Command-Z on your keyboard to undo the last action. You can keep pressing this keyboard combination to step back through your most recent actions. You can also revert the document to a previous version .

Convert to a page layout document

WARNING: When you convert a word-processing document to a page layout document, any existing body text (text that’s not in a text box) is deleted, along with any objects set to move inline with text. If you want to save the body text and any inline objects, copy them before you convert the document, then add a text box to the new document and paste the copied text. Objects set to stay on the page and not move with the text are retained in the conversion.

Choose File > Convert to Page (from the File menu at the top of your screen).

Create new documents from a specific template

You can change a setting in Pages to always open a new document in a particular template instead of from the template chooser.

Choose Pages > Settings (from the Pages menu at the top of your screen).

Click General at the top of the settings window, then select “Use template.”

Use the currently selected template: Verify that the name of the template you want to use appears after “Use template.”

Choose a different template: Click the Change Template button, click a template, then click Choose.

Close the settings window.

After you change this setting, you can still open a new document with a different template. Hold down the Option key, then choose File > New from Template Chooser (from the File menu at the top of your screen).

Use a business card template

The business card templates are page layout documents, so all text is contained in text boxes. You can speed up the process by grouping the edited text on the first card, copying it, then pasting it on each card.

In Pages, turn on alignment guides (choose Pages > Settings from the Pages menu at the top of your screen, click Rulers, then select the checkboxes for alignment guides).

Alignment guides help you place text in the same place on each card.

Choose File > New (from the File menu at the top of the screen), then click Stationery on the left side of the template chooser .

Scroll down to the Business Cards section, then double-click a business card template.

the View menu button

Double-click placeholder text on the first card, then type your own information.

Command-click all the text and graphics you edited on the card.

how to get more resume templates on pages

Click Group at the bottom of the sidebar.

With all text grouped, you can copy and paste without losing proper spacing and alignment.

Delete the text boxes on the next card.

Select the grouped text and graphics on the first business card, choose Edit > Copy, then choose Edit > Paste (from the Edit menu at the top of your screen).

You can use the keyboard shortcuts Command-C for copy and Command-V for paste. The pasted copy overlaps the first card slightly.

Drag the pasted copy to the card whose contents you deleted until the alignment guides appear.

The alignment guides appear when the new copy is aligned exactly horizontally and vertically with the text on the other cards.

Delete the text on the next card, paste again, then drag the pasted copy to the empty card.

Continue deleting placeholder text, pasting the copy, and aligning the content until all of the cards on the page have your information.

Choose File > Print (from the File menu at the top of your screen), click the Printer pop-up menu and choose a printer, then click Print.

If you didn’t delete the unwanted page from the template when you started, be sure to print just the page you edited.

You can modify any of the predesigned templates, then save your changes to create your own custom templates. See Create and manage custom templates .

  • How to Create a Resume in Apple Pages [Mac]

how to create a resume in apple pages mac

This post is dedicated to Mac users who wants to make their own resume with Apple’s word processing software – Pages.

Rather take a professionally crafted template? Click here and get your template for under $10.

Difficulty Level:  Beginner Requirements:  Any Mac operating system with Apple Pages installed

Before we begin, we would like you to know that this tutorial is made on a Macbook Pro running Mac OS X El Capitan (version 10.11.6), with the assistance of Apple Pages (version 5.0.1). If you are using the latest Mac OS – High Sierra, there would be slight difference in terms of user interface, but in general most features in Pages would work the same way.

Step 1: Launch Pages from Applications

Open the Apple Pages app located in your Applications folder. You will be greeted with the following window. If you don’t see this window, go to your top menu bar and select File > New… (or use the shortcut Cmd+N).

choose a template in apple pages

At the left sidebar, navigate to the Stationery tab, scroll down to the Resume section at the main column, then pick a resume template that you like. We selected the Modern Resume template for this guide.

modern resume template in apple pages

Step 2: Replace the Resume with Your Details

By default, the Pages template is pre-populated with dummy info. Go ahead and replace all the dummy details with your own information. If you need help with your resume’s content, check out the  resume writing service offered by our professional resume writers.

For starters, you can remove categories you don’t need by selecting it and hit on the Delete key. To add more categories such as Awards (or Accomplishments), the best way is to copy and paste from another category to retain its formatting.

One downside to this template is that it lists out your work experience as a chunk of long-winding paragraphs. Ideally you would want to avoid doing this as recruiters can be put off by it.

Step 3 (optional): Change fonts and colors to match your style

This modern resume template from Apple Pages uses Avenir Next as the default font. If you are feeling adventurous, you could also play around with different font styles.

We switched up the Headings  and  Subheadings with a serif font – Baskerville. We also removed the squares next to the name as it do not add any real value to the resume.

How To Format a Two-Page Resume (And When You Actually Need One)

Not sure how to format a two-page resume — or whether you even need one? This guide has you covered. With real examples and recruiter-backed advice, learn when and how to expand your resume beyond a single page to showcase your expertise.

2 years ago   •   10 min read

If a one-page resume is good, then a two-page resume must be twice as good, right?

Unfortunately, no. A two-page resume can be effective, but only if you really need one. Generally, two-page resumes are for people applying for C-level, executive, or other senior positions. Most entry or mid-level job seekers should stick to a standard one-page resume instead and focus on including relevant tailored information.

In this article, we'll discuss when a two-page resume is beneficial and when it's not, how to properly format a two-page resume, including tips on what sections to include and what order they should go in , as well as how to effectively transition from your first page to your second and create a professional, concise document.

Key tips on creating and formatting a two-page resume

When should you use a 2-page resume?

Before we jump into the details of how to format and lay out your two-page resume, let’s take a moment to discuss if a two-page resume is right for you.

When to use a 2-page resume

You should use a two-page resume format if:

  • You have 10-15 years+ experience
  • You’re applying for very senior or executive roles
  • You're in an industry that typically uses longer CVs instead of traditional resumes
  • You genuinely need one. (See our tips below to find out if you actually have enough relevant information to warrant a 2-page resume)

When not to use a 2-page resume

Most job seekers won’t need a two-page resume. In most cases, recruiters expect a single page but won’t automatically reject you if your resume spills over onto a second page. That said, you should stick to a standard one-page resume if:

  • You’re a student or recent graduate
  • You don't have a lot of work experience
  • You're applying for an internship or entry-level position
  • You need to add extraneous information (“fluff”) to fill out a second page

How to decide between a 1-page or 2-page resume

Not sure if you need a 1-page or 2-page resume? Our tip: Do both.

  • Start by creating a two-page resume with all of your information on it.
  • Next, trim the least important bits, including older jobs, duplicate accomplishments, and optional resume sections, until you get it down to one page .
  • Now, take a look at both resumes side by side. If the one-page resume is good enough, use that. If it's missing essential skills, keywords, or accomplishments, go with the two-page version instead.
  • Run both versions through an ATS resume checker for a side by side comparison.
  • If your resume is less than a page and a half, always cut it down to a single page.

If you’re wondering if your resume should be one page or two, upload it to the tool below — it’ll evaluate your resume and give you feedback on resume length and other key areas such as resume margins, font size and style, and spacing.

Now you’ve decided if a two-page resume is right for you, let’s discuss how to make the most out of those two pages and how to ensure your resume still looks concise and professional despite the longer format.

How to format a 2-page resume

You should format your two-page resume sections in this order:

  • Contact details

Resume title

Executive summary, areas of expertise, work experience.

  • Additional sections (e.g. volunteer work, projects, certifications, board memberships, etc.)

You can skip straight to any of those sections for more information, or keep reading for the full details. But first, let's take a look at an example of a 2-page resume, and how it differs from a standard 1-page resume.

2-page resume template

Here’s an example of a two-page executive or senior level resume, which shows how to effectively list and organize content on the second page:

What to include in a 2-page resume: Essentials

Decided on using a 2-page resume format? Every 2-page resume should include these basic secctions:

Contact information

This section is no different on a two-page resume. Include your name, general location, phone number, email address, and (optionally) a link to your portfolio or LinkedIn profile, as shown in this example:

Contact information to include on the first page of a 2-page resume

Unlike a standard one-page resume, where this is an optional addition, an executive summary is a must for a two-page resume. A resume summary puts your most relevant experience together up front, where it’s impossible to miss.

Include a brief overview of your experience plus a few key accomplishments in bullet points , as shown in this example:

Emphasize career highlights in an executive summary

This is the most important part of any resume, and that goes double for a two-page resume. The primary reason for having a two-page resume is that you have an extensive list of relevant work experience that needs to be included, so this will generally be the longest section on your two-page resume.

You can format your work experience differently on a two-page resume, as you have more room to play with. Consider splitting up your bullet points into core competencies with their own subheadings to help a recruiter quickly scan your experience and pick out the information they’re seeking. For example, you could split your experience into Revenue Growth, Mergers & Acquisitions, and Diversity & Inclusion, as shown in the example below.

Example of splitting 2-page resume bullet points into core competencies

You may also want to include a short blurb above your bullet points to quickly contextualize key elements of the role, for example, the scope of the business or the size of the department you led. For example:

Adding a short blurb underneath your job title can provide additional context for a recruiter

In contrast to your work experience, additional sections like education should be shortened on a two-page resume. Include the name of the school and degree, location, and your major and relevant minor(s) . At this stage, you can leave off details like your GPA, coursework, student activities, and even your graduation date .

For example:

Keep your education section short and simple on a 2-page resume

In a two-page resume, you can still include a short section at the bottom that lists technical skills, languages , certifications, awards, and other information. Title this section “Skills” or “Core competencies.” Consider splitting this section into key areas using subheadings to highlight specific competencies and make your resume easier to skim. For example:

Use subheadings to highlight core competencies in the skills section of a 2-page resume

If you want to find technical skills related to the executive/management role you’re applying for, use the tool below to get a list of relevant skills and keywords. The tool also gives you the option to upload your resume. It’ll perform a quick scan and tell you what skills are missing.

What to include in a 2-page resume: Extras

In addition to the above, here are some additional sections you can include on a 2-page resume:

This can go at the top of your resume and should match the exact title of the job you’re applying for. This can help your resume pass the initial ATS screening stage, especially if you’ve done similar work previously but under a slightly different title. In addition, you can add select keywords underneath to highlight your top areas of expertise, similar to a LinkedIn headline , as shown in the example below.

Use keywords in your 2-page resume title

No, this isn’t just a fancy name for a skills section . An areas of expertise section goes at the top of your resume, underneath the executive summary, and should include a high-level overview of your broad areas of expertise rather than specific technical skills . This is an optional addition, but can be very helpful in highlighting your broader expertise and summarizing the overall theme of your work experience.

List broad competencies in an areas of expertise section

Additional sections

You can choose to include one or two additional areas in your two-page resume, including volunteer work , projects , certifications , board memberships , and professional affiliations.

But don’t feel the need to include all of these sections just to fill space. Instead, choose 1 or 2 that are most relevant to your experience and the job you’re applying for. For example, a projects section might be a good idea for work that requires programming or design skills , while board memberships and professional affiliations can emphasize that you’re well-regarded in your particular field.

Here is an example of a few additional sections that can add relevant information to your two-page resume.

Include 1-2 additional sections in a 2-page resume

Formatting a 2-page resume: Do's and don'ts

Wondering about the nitty-gritty of how to format a two-page resume? Here's everything you need to know.

DO Put the most important information on page one

Submitting a two-page resume doesn't guarantee a recruiter will actually read more than one page. Make sure the most relevant information, like your most recent work experience, is on the first page so it doesn't get overlooked.

DO use consistent formatting

Maintain consistent formatting and style across both pages to create a cohesive, professional-looking document. This includes using the same font type , size, headings, and bullet points. See our guide on resume formatting tips for more details.

DO balance content and white space

Try not to overcrowd your resume and fill every area with text, as a cluttered resume can be overwhelming and hard to read. Instead, ensure there’s enough empty space to make the text easily readable. Maintain standard margins and consistent spacing between sections, headings, and bullet points to improve readability and aesthetic appeal.

DON’T Repeat information on the second page

There's no need to include the same information twice, so skip the resume title and summary on your second page.

DON’T Submit a double-sided resume

If your resume is two pages long, make sure it's printed on two separate pages, not on a single, double-sided page. A double-sided document is much easier for a recruiter to accidentally overlook.

DON’T Add unnecessary filler

Avoid the temptation to include irrelevant information just to fill space. Every section and bullet point should add value and relevance to your resume. Including unnecessary details can dilute the impact of your key accomplishments and strengths.

How to transition from your first to second page on a 2-page resume

When formatting a two-page resume, you want to make sure your information flows smoothly from the first to second page. Here are some tips to make this transition engaging and easy to follow:

Choose a logical place to break

Make sure that the content at the end of the first page is complete before transitioning to the next, and avoid cutting off sections midway. You will most likely be splitting your work experience between the two pages, but try to finish one role on the first page and start a new one on the second.

Use subheadings for clarity

For long sections like work experience that span both pages, use subheadings for clarity. If a role or project extends over two pages, use subheadings at the top of the second page to remind the reader what the information is related to.

Use headers and footers

Put details like your name, phone number, or email address in a header or footer so it appears on both pages. Use the header function on Word or Google Docs to make your formatting as professional as possible.

Use page numbers

Ensure the hiring manager doesn't miss the second page of your resume by including page numbers. Put "1/2" and "2/2" in your resume header or footer rather than simply writing a number at the bottom of the page.

Highlight section titles

Use bold or italicized fonts to highlight the start of a new section, making it clear to the reader when they are transitioning to a different segment of your resume.

The effectiveness of a two-page resume in different industries

Understanding the expectations of your industry is important when deciding on the length of your resume. Here's a look at various sectors and industries that commonly require/expect two-page resumes:

In academic, scientific, and medical fields

Professionals in these fields often have extensive publications, research, and project experiences that lends itself more to a two-page resume. A two-page resume allows space for this additional information, which is not generally included in other fields.

In creative and Tech industries

For roles in graphic design, architecture, IT, or software development, a two-page resume can be beneficial if you have a substantial portfolio of projects or a long list of technical skills and certifications. It allows more space to elaborate on your skills without overcrowding the resume.

In business, finance, and legal sectors

Higher-level positions in these industries, like executives or managers with years of experience, often require a two-page resume to cover a long history of relevant positions, accomplishments, and skills.

In government and non-profit organizations

These sectors sometimes prefer comprehensive resumes that detail all relevant experiences and qualifications, rather than just your most recent and relevant roles, often making two pages more suitable for government resumes.

However, even within these industries, a two-page resume is usually only appropriate for candidates with substantial experience or those applying for senior-level positions. Entry/mid-level applicants with less experience should still stick to a one-page resume, unless they have a compelling amount of relevant information that requires the longer format.

Resumes are still the most important document in your job search . Generating a professional and interesting resume isn’t easy, but there is a standard set of guidelines that you can follow. As hiring managers usually only spend a short time looking over each resume, you want to make sure that yours has a reason for them to keep reading.

If you’re looking to write a resume, rewrite a resume you already have, or are just curious about resume format, then you’ve come to the right place. This article will go through the steps to writing an excellent resume, as well as offering examples for what sections of the resume should look like.

Key Takeaways:

A resume is a short document that details your professional history in a way that tailors your experience and skill set for the particular job you’re applying for.

Resumes follow a few standard formatting practices, which hiring managers and recruiters expect to see.

Highlighting your work experience, skills, and educational background with relevant keywords can help you get past applicant tracking systems and into more interviews.

How To Write A Resume

How to write a resume

Writing a resume involves using the proper formatting, writing an introduction, and adding your work experience and education. Stuffing your entire professional life into a single page resume can feel overwhelming, but remember that you’re distilling the relevant parts of your professional experience in order to catch the eye of the recruiter .

Formatting your resume. To start, use a word processor such as Microsoft Word or Google docs. Standard resume formatting calls for:

1 inch margins

10-12 point font

A professional, commonly-used font

Additionally, there are three resume formats that are commonly used. Most people should stick with a chronological resume format , but the combination resume format and functional resume format can be effective for more advanced workers or those who have significant gaps in their resume.

Write a resume header . It doesn’t matter if you have the best resume in the world if the hiring manager can’t contact you. Every single resume should include the following contact information:

Your full name. First and last.

Your phone number. Use a personal phone number, and make sure your voicemail is set up properly.

Your email address. Nothing inappropriate — [email protected] is a safe choice.

Location. City, State, Zip Code is fine, but you can include your full mailing address if you think it’s appropriate.

Your social media (optional). LinkedIn is the obvious one you’d want to include, but make sure your profile looks good. If you have an online portfolio , either on a personal blog/website or on a site like Journo Portfolio , feel free to include that here as well.

Your job title. Also optional, but can be useful for applicant tracking systems.

Resume introduction. You have four options for your resume introduction: a resume objective, summary statement, resume profile, or qualifications summary. For most job-seekers, a resume summary statement is the best choice. Regardless of which resume introduction you choose, avoid first-person pronouns (I/me/my).

Resume objective. A resume objective is the goal of your resume. Since the objective of every resume is to land a job, this is not the most original or impressive opener you can have.

On the other hand, it’s a good choice for an entry-level applicant or someone who is changing career paths . This should be a 1-3 sentence summary of why you’re motivated to get the position you’re applying for.

Who should use a resume objective: Entry-level applicants, career-changers, and recent college graduates.

Resume summary. This is the best opener for most job-seekers. As the name suggests, a resume summary highlights the most salient aspects of your resume.

It should include your current position, how many years of experience you have, some of your biggest achievements, and possibly your career goals. This should be a 1-3 sentence spiel and should include some quantifiable experiences.

Who should use a resume summary: Most job seekers; anyone with quantifiable accomplishments to emphasize and a broad range of skills.

Qualifications summary. A bullet point list (4-6 points is the sweet spot) of your qualifications for the position. It’s best used by applicants going for jobs that require a fixed skill set. It’s not a great choice for entry-level applicants who lack quantifiable achievements.

You’ll notice that a qualifications summary takes up more space than a resume objective or summary, but it can actually save the hiring manager time if you provide a bunch of valuable information right off the top.

Who should use a qualifications summary: Those applying to a job with requirements for certain skills and job-seekers who have a lot of experience in their industry and/or field.

Resume profile. A resume profile is similar to a resume summary, but goes into more detail about your accomplishments at your current or former job, while also telling the reader about your career goals. Think of a resume profile as a section that pulls all the best parts of your work experience section into one place.

Who should use a resume profile: Anyone with significant accomplishments under their belt, expertise in a niche field, or applying to a job in the same industry that they have lots of experience in.

Resume headline. Resume headlines aren’t necessary, but you can include one alongside any of the four types of resume introduction listed above. A resume headline comes between your contact information and the resume introduction of your choice.

Headlines can be used by entry-level applicants and experienced job-seekers alike. The important point is that your headline should be short and to the point. Additionally, you should use title case when writing your resume headline (capitalize words as you would for a book title).

Who should use a resume headline: Any job-seeker who wants to showcase their experience or unique value right off the bat.

Work experience. Your work experience section is the place to let hiring managers know that you have relevant experience that would allow you to handle the job you’re applying for.

If you’re using the chronological resume format, your work experience section would come after your resume summary/objective. In a funcitonal reumse, it would follow your skills section. Either way, work experience should be listed in reverse-chronological order (most recent experience at the top).

When listing your work experience, you should include all of the following information:

Job title. Start by stating the position you held at the company. These are easy cue for the hiring manager to look at and determine whether your past positions would help you succeed at their company.

Company Info. Include the name of the employer, the location where you worked, and perhaps a brief description of the company, if it isn’t a well-known name.

Dates Employed: Use the mm/yyyy format if you want to be sure that most applicant tracking systems (ATS) will pick it up. Whatever format you use for dates, be consistent, or your resume will look sloppy.

Job Description. Don’t just list your job’s responsibilities; hiring managers and recruiters already have an idea of your duties based on the job title. Instead, list your most important and impressive responsibilities/achievements at the job with bullet points. Determine which of these are most relevant for your new role based on the job description.

Ideally, each bullet should be no longer than a single line. However, two lines is acceptable, if used sparingly.

Always start with a strong action verb, followed by a quantifiable achievement and a specific duty. For example: “Developed ad campaigns for clients, increasing sales by an average of 27%.” Each job title should include 3-5 bullet points.

The order that you include this information can be changed around, as long as you are consistent throughout your resume. However, the bullet points detailing your job’s achievements should always be the last item for each entry.

It’s important that you tailor your resume’s work experience section to the job you’re applying for. We recommend reading the job description carefully and highlighting the action verbs in one color and the skills, adjectives, and job-specific nouns in a different color.

Educational background. In almost all cases, your education section should come after your professional history. If you’re a recent college graduate with limited work experience, you may choose to put your educational achievements first.

Like the section on your professional history, educational experiences should come in reverse-chronological order, with your highest level of education at the top. If you have a college degree, you don’t need to add any information about your high school experience. If you didn’t finish college, it’s okay to give a list of what credits you did complete.

Each educational experience can be listed in the following format:

Degree/Program Name College/University Name Dates attended

You don’t need to add anything else, especially if your resume is already impressive enough. But if you’re struggling to fill up the page, or you feel that aspects of your educational experience will help make you a standout, you may consider also including:

Minor. If you think it rounds out your not-exactly-relevant-to-the-job major nicely.

GPA. Only if it was 3.5 or higher. Otherwise, it’s not going to do you any favors to include this.

Honors. Dean’s List, Cum Laude, etc.

Achievements. If you wrote a killer thesis/dissertation that showcases intimate knowledge relevant to the job to which you’re applying, you can include its title and a very brief description.

Extracurricular activities. Only include if they’re relevant. For example, if you’re applying for a management position and you were president of your student government.

Certifications/Licenses. If the job you’re applying for requires/likes to see certain certifications or licenses that you have, you may include them in this section as well.

Skills section. Your impressive skills should be scattered logistically throughout your professional history section, but you should also include a section solely dedicated to highlighting your skill set . Skills can be broken down into two categories:

Hard skills are skills you learn through training and indicate expertise with a technical ability or job-specific responsibility.

Soft skills are your personality traits, interpersonal abilities, and intangible qualities that make you more effective at your job.

Your resume should have a healthy mix of hard and soft skills, as both are essential to job performance. However, since soft skills are harder to prove in the context of a resume, we recommend leaning more toward hard skills. Additionally, whenever you list a soft skill, make sure that it has a correlating item in your work experience section.

For example, if you say you are skilled in collaboration, you should mention a time when a team project was a major success somewhere in your work experience section.

Optional sections. If you still have space left or there’s more you want to show off that doesn’t quite fit in any of the above sections, you may consider adding an additional section covering one or more of the below categories:

Language . Being bilingual is always impressive, and can be included on a resume for any company. Highlight this more if your position involves liaising with international distributors and/or clients. Don’t lie about your proficiency level.

It may be best to not mention it if you’re not particularly proficient speaker . Such as if you took courses in school, or haven’t really managed to gain fluency. It can end up looking like an attempt to inflate your credentials, which you want to avoid.

Volunteer experience . Always a good thing to include. It shows you’re a team player who behaves in a way that promotes the greater good, without thought of personal gain. Especially good for entry-level candidates and those applying for jobs at a non-profit. If you have gaps in your work history, you can also consider including volunteer experiences in your work history section instead.

Personal projects. A personal blog, published works, or a portfolio of your past projects are all good things to include. They show you take initiative, enjoy and take pride in your work, and that you can handle the responsibilities of the job, if relevant.

Certifications/licenses. If you didn’t include these in your education section, this is another good place to list relevant certifications or licenses that you have.

Interests . This is largely just a space filler if your resume is light in other areas. However, if your hobbies are directly related to the job that you’re applying for, it’s not a bad idea to include them. And it might draw a recruiter’s attention if you end up sharing some of the same interests as they do.

If you have several seemingly random items that are valuable, but don’t warrant creating a whole separate section for, you can also make a section called “Additional Experience.” Here you can include all of the above categories in one place. Just make sure that each item is clear and easy for readers to understand.

Resume writing FAQ

What is a resume?

A resume is a one to two-page document that focuses on professional experience, past achievements, education and certifications, and specific skills tailored to the job you’re applying for.

Almost every job application requires a resume, and hiring managers use them as a first impression in determining which applicants get a shot at an interview.

Whether you’re fresh out of college or have 30 years of professional experience, this guide should help craft a resume that stands out from the crowd and get you one step closer to landing your dream job.

What is the format for writing a good resume?

Most people will want to use a chronological or reverse-chronological resume format. This format is compatible with most applicant tracking systems (ATS) and is easy for employers to read. Additionally it helps highlight your experience, which helps prove your qualifications.

How far back should a resume go?

A resume should go back no further than 10 to 15 years. However, it is important that all your information is relevant. Therefore, do not include job experience that is irrelevant to your application, even if it’s fewer than 10 years old. Save that information for later discussions.

Should you personalize your resume for each job?

Yes, you should personalize your resume for each job you apply to. Many recruiters use ATS now, which will search for keywords in a resume and reject those that don’t have them. That means that the skills you choose to highlight as well as your opening, such as your resume summary, should be altered to suit each job you apply to.

You don’t need to rewrite the entire resume for each job, but it does show attention to detail and initiative to make sure that your resume is customized. It also makes it more likely that you’ll get past the first step of the process.

How to List Publications on Your Resume (+ Examples)

Melanie Lockert

3 key takeaways

  • Adding publications can add credibility and authority to your resume.
  • Only include publications to your resume if they’re relevant to the job.
  • Teal’s AI Resume Builder makes it easy to add a properly formatted publications section

If you’re an author, researcher, or in academia, you should include your published works on your resume. Adding publications on a resume can boost your credibility and authority. Plus, it may help you stand out.

You can add a publications section to your current resume template or use resume builders to help you list and format each piece. Teal is one of the best resume builders for listing publications.

If you’re applying for a job where your writing isn’t relevant, you can simply uncheck that section to exclude it. That makes it easy to have various resume versions for different roles.

This guide walks you through best practices when including publications on a resume.

Struggling to land interviews with your resume? Get started with Teal’s AI Resume Builder for free.

What are publications on a resume?

Publications on a resume include written and scholarly works published in reputable journals, websites, or other distinguished platforms. Blog posts on sites like WordPress, Medium, or Substack do not often qualify for the publications section of a resume and should often not be linked on your resume .

Examples of publications worthy of a resume include:

  • Book title , if you’re an author, researcher, or academic
  • Peer-reviewed journal articles or papers , if you’re a professor, researcher, or in academia
  • Research papers , if you’re in law, science, medicine, etc.
  • Article title , if you’ve written articles for a well-known journal, website, or magazine (e.g. Journal of the American Medical Association , The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, National Geographic, TIME)
  • Conference papers , if you’re a researcher or academic

The publications and presentations on your resume should be related to the industry you’re in and the open position in question.

Should you include publications on your resume?

You may have an impressive list of publications. But now that you’re on the job search, you’re not sure about adding publications on a resume.

To help you decide, ask yourself: Is this related to the job? Could it help me land a job interview? If so, your potential employers want to see them.

If the answer is no, skip it. Bryan Berthot , a project manager, scrum master, and Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) candidate at Univ. of South Florida shares his strategy.

“My practice is to add publications when they’re germane to the job in question and when they maximize the chance that my resume will be noticed. I walk the line between academia and industry, as I’m both a project manager practitioner and an adjunct faculty member who teaches.”

That means including published works for academic positions and leaving them off other positions.

“Even though most adjunct faculty positions involve teaching and not research, for those jobs I always send my entire CV, which includes my academic publications. It sets me apart from many instructional faculty because by including my publications, it demonstrates that I can bring aspects of research into the classroom to give students real-world examples."

Finally, Berthot shared examples of when not to include publications on your resume.

For project manager jobs, I typically omit my academic publications and books from my resume—unless I suspect that it will set me apart from other candidates.”

Sometimes, the answer is obvious. If you match one of the following descriptions, it makes sense to add research publications on your resume.

  • Author. If you’ve published a book, it establishes your credibility in a certain field. If you’re applying for a professorship or a writing-heavy role, include the book title.
  • Researcher. If you’ve published your research and are applying for an academic position, research-based role, or as a speaker for a conference, it makes sense to include your research paper on your resume.
  • Student. If you’re a full-time student, research and writing might be your full-time job right now. In lieu of current working experience, listing publications on a resume can show your areas of expertise and highlight your writing skills.
  • Professor. Getting published is an important step on your journey to becoming a professor. If you’re applying for a teaching or research role, include all of your publications on your resume.

Teal’s Resume Builder can help you add your publications to your resume easily. You can see resume templates and get guidance on what to include based on the job description.

How to list publications on your resume

If you’ve determined your published works are relevant to the job you’re applying for, you can add them to your resume.

Here’s how to list publications on your resume:

  • Add a Publications section. You should create a dedicated resume section to list publications. In most cases, your Publications section will follow your Education section.
  • List each publication in a bullet point. Include the publication title, the name of the publisher, and the date (month and year).
  • Choose a style. Depending on your field, there might be a specific citation style you should use. Some examples include MLA format, APA style, AMA style, or IEEE style.
  • Start with your most recent publications. List your publications on your resume in reverse chronological order. That means starting with your most recent publication and listing your older work in descending order.
  •  Refine your list. If you’re including a co-authored piece, make that clear and list out your role in the piece, such as “Lead author.” You can also include pending pieces by including the article title and noting it’s “Under review” or “Submitted for publication.” If any publications aren’t relevant to the job, delete them from the list.

While there are nuances to every field and industry, these are best practices for how to show publications on your resume. Consult peers in your field and the job description instructions to properly format publications on your resume.

How to list scientific publications on resume

If you’re in the sciences and have published papers, you’ll likely use American Psychological Association (APA) or the Council of Science Editors (CSE) style when citing your work.

There are also slight differentiations on how to cite the publication based on the type of work. For instance, listing a book is different from listing a journal on your resume.

CSE also has different citation variations:

  • Citation-sequence
  • Citation-name

Choose a style and cite your work using the appropriate format. According to Boston University Libraries , the general format for citing a journal using CSE is:

Author. Year (or Date). Title of article. Title of journal. Volume number and issue number. Page numbers. URL in angle brackets. Date accessed.

The key is to use the same style for each publication listed on your resume. Not only is this more visually appealing, it’s also easier to understand.

How to list academic publications on a resume

Academic publications typically use either MLA or APA style. MLA refers to the Modern Language Association and APA is the American Psychological Association. Which one you should use may depend on your field. MLA is generally used in the humanities while APA is generally used in the sciences.

According to the Library of Congress , article citations using MLA style include:

Last name, First name. Title. Title of the Website, Version or edition, Publisher. Day Month Year of publication, URL. Day Month Year of access.

You can use a tool like Citation Machine to easily cite journal articles in APA style. The basic APA journal citation formula is:

Last Name, First Initial. Middle Initial. (The year it was published). Article title. Publisher title, Volume or Issue , page range.

How to list research publications on a resume

Many research publications use MLA or APA style for citations. You can choose which style best fits and use the formula when putting publications on your resume.

If you’re a research assistant and don’t have publications to list quite yet, you can still add your skills to your resume. You can create a research section on your resume if you have a lot to add. If it’s only a couple of items, include it in your achievements section.

For example:

  • Conducted 100 interviews on the relationship between social media and mental health for study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology

Teal’s Resume Builder can help you start so you can easily list and format publications on your resume.

Sample publications on a resume

You have a range of citation styles to choose from; some may be a better fit than others, depending on your industry. Here are some examples of how to cite publications on your resume using common citation styles:

Smith, Peter. Stoicism in the Modern Era, Philosophy Guide. 6 May 2020, [website]. Accessed 25 April 2024.
Hernandez, J. F. 2023. Sugar and Depression. Today in Mental Health, Volume 3, pgs 5-10.

General format

If you’re looking for a general format, you can use Teal to add your publications on your resume.

Inside the Resume Builder , you can include a publications section.

cv publications often include publication, publisher and date

You can then input the Publication, Publisher, and the Date.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you list publications on a legal resume.

If you only have one publication, list it in the Education or Achievements section of your resume. If you have more than one publication, create a Publications section. Use The Bluebook when citing your publications on your resume.

How do you list only one publication on a resume?

If you have just one article or paper to include on a resume, place it in your Education or Achievements section. Include the title, publisher, and date. You can choose a specific format such as APA format, MLA style, etc.

How do you list publications in progress on a CV?

If you have submitted publications now in review, you can list the title and put “Under review” or “In progress.” For publications that have been accepted but not yet published, you can list the title and put “In press” in parentheses.

Do research posters count as publications on a resume?

Research posters don’t carry the same weight as other peer-reviewed publications. If you have other academic papers, include those in a separate section on your resume, such as Education or Achievements. If you don’t, you may still want to include research posters in your Achievements section. Include the publication or conference, if applicable.

Should you list publications in your professional summary on your resume?

Your publications should be listed under a separate Publications section. If you’re pursuing an academic or research position, you may want to highlight your top publication as part of your professional summary.

8 Places To Find Free Resume Templates for Your Job Search

D o you need a resume to apply for a new job but need help figuring out where to start? Keep reading – this post has everything you need to know, including where to find free resume templates.

Writing a resume is one of the most frustrating aspects of searching for a new job. And if you’re short on cash, purchasing a resume template is simply out of the question.

If you’re ready to impress hiring managers but lack the funds to purchase a professional template, here are eight places to find free resume templates online.

What Is a Resume?

A resume is a short (usually 1-2 pages) summary of your professional skills, work experience, and achievements. This document helps recruiters, human resources, and hiring managers find the best candidate for the job they are trying to fill.

While there are different resume formats, the most common elements on a resume are contact info, a professional summary, a work history, a skills list, education, and accomplishments.

The goal of your resume is to convince recruiters you’re the most qualified applicant, landing you a job interview. While you can create a resume from scratch, using a template will save you time. It helps ensure your resume is formatted correctly and you’re not missing any critical details.

Having reviewed my fair share of resumes, job seekers often forget crucial information like their phone number or email address, which means they’ll never get a callback, no matter how qualified. Using a resume template helps solve this issue.

Why Is Your Resume Template Important?

When you submit a resume online, it is initially scanned by ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems). This  software scans your resume  for keywords and phrases in the job description. ATS also has some limitations, such as being unable to read and interpret specific fonts, colors, and design elements.

This is why using an  ATS-friendly resume template  and the right keywords are crucial to landing an interview.

The resumes that best match the job description make it past ATS and into the hands of a hiring manager. Resumes that do not contain the right keywords never make it to a real person.

According to  Jobscan , 99% of Fortune 500 Companies use ATS, so if you’re not using an ATS-friendly resume template and the wrong keywords, you’ll likely have difficulty landing a job interview.

Places To Find Free Resume Templates Online

Now that you understand what a resume is and why using an ATS-compliant template is essential, let’s discuss where to find free templates online.

From my research, there are a lot of companies that advertise free resume templates, but when you go to download your document, they charge a fee.

While selling premium resume templates is fine, many companies only tell you about the charges once you’ve added all your details to the template and are ready to download the document.

Don’t worry; the resume resources below are 100% free for  job seekers .

1. Google Docs Resume Templates

To access Google’s free resume templates, you’ll need to have a Google account (which is free). Once logged into your account, go to  Google Docs  and choose a template. Google has five free editable resume templates with different colors and fonts. There is one template with two columns, which I don’t recommend because it’s unsuitable for getting past ATS.

According to  Easy Resume , the most ATS-friendly fonts are Times New Roman, Tahoma, Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, Calibri, Georgia, Cambria, Gill Sans, and Garamond. When you’re modifying your resume, you’ll want to choose a font that is crisp, clear, and easy to read – no scripts or ultra-thin fonts.

A few pops of color on your resume can help it stand out from other applicants, but you’ll want to use it sparingly. It’s best to avoid bright colors as they can be difficult to read and a turn-off to employers. Black, blue, and red are safe bets when picking a color for your resume.

You can choose from six free resume templates on  Indeed  (Clean, Minimalist, Simple, Creative, Executive, and Modern). Of these, the most ATS-friendly are the Minimalist and Executive resume templates.

Instead of being a template you can completely modify, Indeed uses a resume builder, so you’re limited in fonts, colors, and career sections. In terms of ease, it’s very user-friendly, but because your options are limited, it gives you a more cookie-cutter resume, making it difficult to stand out from other job seekers.

JobHero  has six free resume templates you can download using Microsoft Word or Pages if you have a Mac computer. Of the six templates, the Deluxe, the Distinguished, and the Professional are the most ATS-compliant.

With these templates, you’ll get tips for  writing your resume , which can be extremely helpful if you need help deciding what to include. You can also change the fonts and colors and modify them as needed.

The downside with these templates is if you’re using a Mac, the formatting shifts slightly, so you’ll need to adjust the spacing.

Jobscan  offers many free resume templates in varying formats based on your career level (entry-level position, mid-career, management, and senior-level professionals). While these templates don’t have a lot of frills, they are ATS-friendly and compatible with Microsoft Word.

You must supply your name and email address to download their free resume templates.

Each resume template includes tips for filling in each section to showcase your best skills and attributes.

Canva  is a free design tool offering thousands of one-page resume and CV templates, including Simple, Professional, Creative, and Modern. With Canva, you’ll select the template and fill in the experience, qualifications, education, certifications, and skill sections.

Canva will offer many design options, including hundreds of colors, fonts, and design elements. Once you’ve added all the necessary information, you can download your resume as a PDF.

6. Novoresume

Novoresume  is a resume builder with eight free resume templates, including Creative, Basic, Modern, Executive, Simple, Functional, Student, and Professional resume templates. Register for an account and verify your email address to create your resume. From there, you’ll fill in your job title, resume summary, work experience, skills, education, and other professional achievements and attributes.

The Novoresume builder lets you change your resume layout, fonts, colors, and themes. Once you’re finished filling in the information, click the download button and save your resume as a PDF to your computer.

7. Heather Austin

Heather Austin  is a former College Professor turned Career Coach who helps job seekers find and land their dream jobs. Heather offers a wealth of career advice and strategies on her blog and YouTube channel and a free professional resume template and sample.

This basic resume template is Applicant Tracking System compliant and fully customizable. To get the template, you must sign up with your email address, and the template goes directly to your inbox. The template comes in a Word Doc but can be edited in Pages if you have a Mac. If you need a one-page resume template, you can delete the sections that do not apply to your situation.

This excellent resume template will work for various career levels and occupations.

8. Enhancv Resume Builder

Enhancv  is a resume and cover letter builder that is free for seven days. With your free trial, you get two resume and cover letter templates, a maximum of 15 resume sections, and access to all their design tools.

The neat thing about this resume builder is you can start from scratch, upload an existing resume, or pick resumes from popular career categories like Software Engineer, Human Resources, Nursing, and more. This resume builder is extremely user-friendly, offering many different wording suggestions and design options.

The one downside of using the free option is your resume will have its branding at the bottom. You’ll need to upgrade to a paid version to remove the branding, starting at $24.99 monthly.

Choosing a Free Resume Template

When choosing a free resume template, you’ll want to pick a simple one that is well-formatted and easy to read and scan. After all, you only have seconds to grab attention and show hiring managers you’re the best candidate for the job!

Avoid free resume templates with too many design elements, such as icons, headshots, and multiple columns, as Applicant Tracking Systems cannot read these elements. Unless an employer states they want you to submit your resume in a Word or text Doc, you should save your resume as a PDF so your formatting is locked into place.

Regardless of which free resume template you use, remember to include action verbs, quantifiable stats, keywords, a link to your LinkedIn profile, and  soft skills  and hard skills relevant to the potential job. Also, use bullet points and a lot of white space so your resume is easy to scan.

Remember, your resume is a highlight reel of your relevant skills, education, and experience, not a list of every task you did at your previous position. Modify your resume for each listing, and add keywords from the job posting to increase your chances of landing a  job interview !
