College Essay Bootcamp

Four students standing outside together facing the camera

Get a strong start on your college application with this series of sessions on the common app and supplemental essays. You’ll learn what makes a stellar essay and how to incorporate key traits that will capture an admissions committee’s attention and heart. Includes two 4.5-hour in-person sessions; two first-come, first-serve, remote sessions (Zoom calls) for individualized feedback; as well as independent writing time.

The College Essay Bootcamp focuses on the common app and supplemental essays, and not on admission to Stanford. Stanford does not have a preference for students who attend Stanford-specific summer programs and this opportunity is intended to provide general guidance around the college application process.

About College Essay Bootcamp

In-person session day 1 finding your voice and telling your story: common app main essay.

The main essay is one of the most important components of the college application. A stellar essay will help a student standout from amongst a pool of competitive applicants. Writing an outstanding essay, however, can be a daunting task. In this seminar, students will learn the answer to questions such as, what are colleges looking for? What do I write about? How creative should I be?

In-Person Session Day 2 Making Every Word Count: Supplemental Essays & Activity List

In addition to the main essay, many colleges require their own school-specific prompts, also known as supplemental essays. Covering popular prompts including the “Why Us?” question and the elaboration of an extracurricular or job-related experience, this seminar will teach students how to best approach various supplemental essays and further illuminate who they are as a person and how they can contribute to a specific college.

The activity list section of the college application provides an applicant the opportunity to describe their passions, skills, and talents. In this portion of the seminar, students will learn strategies to best highlight their accomplishments and activities. Additionally, students will be equipped with the tools to create a strong resume. Although not required by every school, a good resume can aid students with teacher recommendations, college interviews, scholarship applications, and future job or internship opportunities.

It was really enjoyable and extremely helpful overall especially as someone who is applying to colleges the coming school year and is behind on essays!

Admissions Essay Boot Camp

How to write your way into the elite college of your dreams, publisher description.

Founder of elite college prep agency Mint Tutors, Ashley Wellington shares hard-hitting essay-writing advice tailored to each student's strengths and potential pitfalls, inspiring students to write as if guided by their own personal college admissions tutor. Your Own Pocket Essay Tutor Ever wish you had a private tutor to help you write your admissions essays? With this book, you do. Ashley Wellington, founder of the elite New York college prep agency Mint Tutors, has personalized her hard-hitting advice just for you. Her unique “boot camp” process starts by helping you identify your student type, then figure out which topics will highlight your best (or worst) attributes to admissions officers. Thinking about writing an essay on . . . • Sports? This popular topic is often limiting, but Wellington will help  you come across as talented—and also thoughtful and well rounded. • Your trip to Egypt ? Wellington will help you avoid common travel clichés that make admissions officers groan.  • The color yellow ? Wellington will make sure you sound quirky and creative in the right way.  Even the most impressive students can sound ordinary by following the formulaic approach of other essay guides—and in this über-competitive landscape, you need an edge to stand out to top schools. Wellington’s tutees have gained acceptance to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Georgetown, Duke, and other elite institutions, and with this book at your side, you can join their ranks.

Exceeded My Expectations

“Our experience with Top Tier’s Personal Boot Camp was incredible! This 3-day experience exceeded my expectations in every way. My daughter was super anxious about the whole college admissions process, and in just 3 days of her summer, she was FINISHED with it! J. was super calming, knowledgeable, and reassuring. L left feeling great about herself as a college candidate. We loved working with her.”

– Personal Boot Camp parent

Unvarnished Guidance

“You were instrumental in challenging P to develop more extracurriculars and in helping him navigate the essay. But equally valuable to us, you were there to say “Bowdoin is a great choice” and “xyz” is not.  It’s that unvarnished guidance which is invaluable – and rare.”

Three days of one-on-one work with a Senior Counselor from the Application Boot Camp® team.

Hear from our students and parents :

I just wanted to let you all know that I was accepted into Northwestern! Thanks for all your help!

I just wanted to let you guys know I’ve officially been admitted to Williams. I am SO excited and so grateful for all of your help along the way. Thank you so much. Woohoo!

We want to share the good news that P was admitted ED to Williams yesterday! Thank you!

Michele, I know E has already written you but I wanted to reach out and say thank you to you and R as well as the rest of the Top Tier Team. E is over the moon and being able to enjoy the rest of the year without the stress of college decisions is priceless. We all appreciate what you and your team were able to do to help guide the process as well as make the essay writing much smoother that it would have been otherwise.

I wanted to share the good news that J was accepted to Duke early admission. Thank you for your support!

I KNOW that YOU were beyond instrumental in this process and I wanted to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for your efforts from August in Boston onward. You were always available and such a massive help for K with her supplements.

I got into Brown University! I’m so excited to attend!! Thank you for all your guidance and support during the whole process. I couldn’t have asked for a better outcome, and Top Tier was critical in this result.

MASSIVE thanks to you for all you did to shepherd us through this nerve-racking process! You are the rock, the hub, and the heart of TTA. H is so extraordinarily fortunate to have had you supporting, guiding, and believing in her. I saw her grow right before my eyes during Bootcamp (which was phenomenally well run, due to your effort and skill). I still marvel at how much she accomplished in such a condensed period of time but I am most grateful for how you nurtured her spirit and confidence. Empowering her in that way has made all the difference this year. I know everyone must say “we couldn’t have done it without you” but that sentiment is true beyond words. You have given her a gift that will keep giving for the rest of her life and you have changed us for good AND for the better.

I can’t thank you enough for all your guidance and encouragement during ABC! I’m still exhausted but also really happy about my essays. It’s a huge relief to have my common app in such good shape. I’ll never forget how much you and the rest of the amazing TTA team helped me.

I just wanted to share with you the very exciting news that I was accepted into the University of Miami!!! Thank you so much for all your help and support during this process. All the team from Top Tier really made a difference and were extremely supportive.

We are thrilled to inform you that H has been accepted to Duke University and will be joining his brother K there this fall. We were admittedly a little nervous when Application Boot Camp (understandably) went virtual, but we should not have worried as H came away super-prepared for application season. We really appreciate all of the frank advice and counsel we have received from everyone at Top Tier over the last few years as our sons have journeyed through this process.

We wanted to let you know that L was accepted at Tufts – his first choice and ED app!  Thanks again for all of your help!

I’m already envious of the red carpet you are rolling out for ABC; these kiddos are so fortunate to be in such caring and attentive hands! T is very excited for Bootcamp and that is a gift in and of itself. A million thank yous for creating an application experience that generates more enthusiasm than panic.

I hope you are enjoying some extremely well-deserved R&R after the intensity of Bootcamp! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for offering R and I your warmth, encouragement, expertise, and seasoned insight. R was so very lucky to have the chance to work with you. We now count you as part of our beloved extended family! ABC was certainly rigorous but it was wonderful to see R’s pride and relief when she came home on Friday.

Trust The Process . Those words are etched in my brain forever. We were so happy and excited to watch our daughter find out she had been accepted early into Notre Dame last night. I felt like a millstone that had been hanging around my neck was taken off immediately. Thank you for your patience and for your expertise in guiding our daughter. Her friends from ND are coming home this weekend and she is so happy and proud to be able to wear a ND sweatshirt she had been keeping in her closet since she picked it up at ND last June. The Boot Camp was really awesome in teaching her how to write essays for the supplemental questions. I would say it also boosted her confidence, knowing that experts such as yourselves taught her the pearls of wisdom in writing college applications. From South Dakota to South Bend… it was a journey uphill but our daughter is finally home… Thank you!

She’s IN at Stanford! Thank you for all your support and hard work, and to the others at TTA who worked over her application. You are very much appreciated. K is a great kid and I trust her to do good in the world.

While H awaits his early round decisions, I wanted to give you an update on R. He just finished his first semester at Occidental and he has been crushing it. He loves the school and he is motivated, curious and working so hard. It has been an ideal place for him.

We cannot thank you enough for all of your help and truly wonderful advice. We are so grateful!

I wanted to share that M GOT INTO PRINCETON! We are so happy for her. She worked super hard. She couldn’t have done the application questions and created a niche without all of your support. Thank you so much for everything. We will forever be in gratitude.

Without ABC I would have had a strictly mediocre application.

I wanted to share the good news that I was accepted to Wharton ED last night!! Thanks again to you and ABC for all the support.

I’m not in complete TTA withdrawal after ABC, thanks to you continuing to keep us on track! My heartfelt gratitude for all you have done for the K family. Your care and calm have meant the world to us. So much appreciation for being our rock and guiding light!

I just got my Brown Early Decision back and I wanted to let you all know that I got in!!!! Thank you, guys, so much for all the help with my application and my essays. I couldn’t have done it without your help! I am so happy that I got into my first-choice school!!! Once again, I can’t thank you all enough for all the help and guidance

We are enormously grateful for your nurturing presence in our lives and we can’t thank you enough for the gift of your extraordinary experience and expert advice during this nerve-racking process. I still can’t get over the collective brain power in the “room” at ABC.

You might be surprised at what I heard H say yesterday but it’s such a tribute to how hard he worked, how much support he received, and the connections he made. After his 3-hour nap on Friday, a celebratory dinner, and a great night’s, he got up on Saturday and said, “Mom, I want to go back to Bootcamp!” True story. I’m not sure how you do it with the pace and intensity of ABC but T felt truly seen, deeply respected, pushed in the best way possible, and overjoyed about the results. We appreciate your help more than words can express.

I wanted to share with you the great news that I was accepted to Tulane ED yesterday! Thank you both so much for your advice and help along the way. I can’t imagine how hard it would have been without it. I am so excited and looking forward to the fall. Thank you!!

Dr. Pat Wilk is a writing coach who listens.

The college essay is more important than ever.

Because many schools  have kept the test-optional admission policy they adopted during the pandemic, the college essay carries more weight than it ever has. (Harvard's test-optional policy has been extended through the Class of 2030.)  Post affirmative action, the essay could explore your racial/cultural identity.

It's game time! Let's have some fun.

Good news dr. wilk can take you from absolutely no ideas to an essay you'll be proud of in just one day..

You can write your essay from home, or come to a live workshop.

You may think you've got nothing now, but you're wrong. You've got your life. There is an incredible essay in you, and it's our job to let it out. The process of getting there is easier than you'd expect, will certainly hold some surprises for you, and will leave you with some skills that can help you in college.

In fact, after your College Essay Boot Camp workshop, you'll never look at an essay the same way again.

Session 1 : Wednesdays, June 26, 2024 – July 31, 2024 at 6:00-7:00 p.m. CST (the first four weeks are online for one hour, the last two weeks are one-to-one consultations)

Session 2 : Wednesdays, September 18, 2024 – October 23, 2024 at 6:00-7:00 p.m. CST (the first four weeks are online for one hour, the last two weeks are one-to-one consultations)

The writing assignments, in particular, are designed to not only help students complete their essays, but also to help students with foundational writing skills.

Part two of the boot camp (Weeks 5-6) involves one-to-one personal coaching offered for the last two weeks of the program. A writing coach will work via teleconference or email with your student. We provide up to 3 essay reviews during the one-to-one consultation period.

By the end of the six-week College Admissions Essay Boot Camp, your student will have three ready-to-submit college admissions essays. Your student will also benefit from a greater sense of self-confidence in his or her writing skills.

What are the class requirements?

Prior to the start of the College Admissions Essay Boot Camp, participants should choose three essay questions that they want to work on during the boot camp. If you (the student) are unsure about the schools to which you plan to apply or the questions you want to use, we recommend that you review the Common Application (www.commonapp.org) and consider using the Common Application writing prompts.

To access the online webinar, students need to have a computer with the following operating system: Windows XP (or newer) or Mac with OS X 10.6 (or newer). You can also connect to the webinar from your Ipad, Android, or Iphone.

Ethics Statement

We do not write admissions essays for students. Students do the work. Please know that admissions officers are skilled readers of admissions essays, and can easily detect an essay that has been written, for example, by a parent or a professional writer. Our goal is to help students think through their ideas and ultimately, for students, themselves, to communicate their story through writing. We also aim to help students develop foundational writing skills. We believe that writing is an invaluable skill, which, surely, will benefit a student well beyond the application process. While we cannot promise that a student will be admitted to any particular college, graduate school, or professional school, we can say — proudly– that our services are time-tested and provide added-value. Our client testimonials speak to the quality of our work.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is college counseling.

College counseling assists middle and high school students and their families with the college admissions process, including college selection, application assistance, college essay guidance and editing, interview preparation, resumes, career paths and majors, high school course selection, and more. As high school counselors are now tasked with more responsibilities and increased caseloads, an independent college counselor can provide additional support for families.

KD College Prep offers several different programs in various formats. Small-group programs like the APPLY NOW! Advantage Program and the APPLY NOW! Essay Boot Camp are cost-effective ways to get guidance for the admissions process. Pinnacle Sessions are hourly, one-on-one meetings with the college counseling team that address specific areas of the admissions process based on a student’s individual priorities.

Regardless of the setting, our college counseling team provides unbiased and honest advice based on knowledge gained by experience, continuing education, and college research. Our counselors do not write essays or complete application materials for students, nor do we guarantee admission, but we will provide detailed feedback and support along the way.

Choose a program that fits best with your student’s unique needs. Have questions? Sign up for a   free consultation  to learn more about our program options.

Why should I hire a college counselor?

To put it simply, the college admissions process can be challenging. It’s nice to have a little expert guidance along the way.

Since 1992, we have helped families just like yours navigate this stressful process. Our college counseling team can help students and their families choose the best path. The support of our staff can help students take charge of the process, eliminate costly mistakes, stay on track, and maximize the chance of admittance into his or her dream college.

If any of this sounds familiar, then you may want to consider asking for some expert guidance.

  • Stressed about finding the right college fit?
  • Not sure how to start your  college application essays?
  • Concerned about how to pay for college?
  • Confused about the different types of financial aid?
  • Worried about preparing for college interviews?
  • Super-anxious about completing applications?
  • Have questions and need more detailed information about certain topics?
  • Need help reviewing items within the admissions process?

Many of our families say that working with a college counselor helps maintain family relationships and decreases stress.

How does college admissions consulting work?

The first step is finding out more . Give a member of our team a call to schedule an information session. Here are just a few of the questions your student might hear:

  • What activities are you involved in?
  • What is your GPA? Does your high school report class rank?
  • What classes have you taken in high school?
  • Have you taken the national PSAT, SAT®, or ACT® tests? How did you do?
  • What are your college goals?
  • Have you thought about possible careers or college majors?
  • Where are you in the college admissions process?

Based on your student’s goals, dreams, priorities, and opportunities, we’ll make some recommendations on which of our college counseling programs is the best fit. Talk it over as a family, and then the real work begins!

How do I choose a counselor?

Sign up for a   free consultation   with a member of our college counseling team to talk about your student’s admissions goals and next steps.

It’s also important for students to understand the amount of time that is involved in the admissions process. Students will be held accountable for doing the work and meeting deadlines—just like in college and the real world.

Our team has professionals who specialize in various areas of the admissions process. Depending on a student’s needs, we can help him or her reach those goals.

APPLY NOW! Essay Boot Camp (12 th Grade)

During the boot camp (3 days, 2 hours each day), KD’s college counseling team guides students through the development of a personal statement which students may use or adapt for college admissions. Students will also brainstorm on supplemental essays. (Note: the APPLY NOW! Advantage Program includes all the pieces of the essay boot camp.)

Learn more about APPLY NOW! Essay Boot Camps .

Aptitude Assessment (7 th – 12 th Grade)

Students take an aptitude assessment to help identify their strengths and interests. In a follow-up, one-on-one session, a member of the college counseling team will review results which can help guide important decisions such as middle school and high school course selection, college selection, college major and fields of study, career opportunities, and more.

Learn more about the Aptitude Assessment .

When should my student start working with a college counselor?

It all depends on the student and what his or her goals are. In a perfect world, students would meet with a counselor in middle school or early in high school to understand the college admissions process and get help selecting high school courses and identifying interesting extracurricular activities. Students would then use 10th and 11th grade to explore colleges and develop a foundation for the application process, leading into a busy 12th grade   college application season , which generally begins the summer before senior year.

Students who plan on applying to highly-competitive schools or who need more assistance may benefit from starting the process earlier. On the other hand, a well-prepared student may only need finishing touches on a few essays before deadline season during his or her 12th grade year.

No matter where our college counseling students apply, we recommend starting early and finishing the application process by October 15 th in senior year, if at all possible. College deadlines vary and so will students’ timelines, depending on when they start with us.

This process is often much more time-consuming than you think. Call to schedule a free consultation  with a member of our team so we can offer some recommendations based on your student’s specific situation.

Which schools have accepted KD's former college counseling students?

Our students have earned acceptances into every Ivy League school (Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Yale, University of Pennsylvania, and Princeton), Emory, NYU, Duke, Georgetown, UCLA, UC-Berkeley, Carnegie-Mellon, Stanford, Johns Hopkins, University of Arizona Honors College, University of Chicago, Caltech, Michigan, Georgia Tech, SMU, MIT, Vanderbilt, Rice, Davidson, St. John’s, Trinity, the University of Notre Dame, Bowdoin, Texas A&M, University of Texas Engineering Honors, and many more.

How much does it cost?

KD College Prep college counseling pricing varies by program:

College counseling is expensive. Is it worth it?

The average cost of attending college varies. Here are some ranges for you and your family to consider.

  • Public, in-state college—$30,000+/year
  • Public, out-of-state colleges—$40-$70,000+/year
  • Private colleges—$50-$80,000/year

Many of our college counseling students obtain outstanding scholarship offers that help them afford the overall cost of college.

College counseling can be well worth it for students who have important goals, need help understanding the process, or want professional guidance to make the most of college and scholarship opportunities.

20 Must-Read MBA Essay Tips

Business essay tips

Business school admissions committees care about more than (just) your  GMAT scores and GPA —they want to know who you are and why you belong in their program . Your MBA essays are your best chance to sell the person behind the résumé. They should tie all the pieces of your business school application together and create a comprehensive picture of who you are, what you've done, and what you bring to the table.  Here's a roundup of our best MBA essay tips to keep in mind as you begin to write.

How to Write an Unforgettable B-School Essay

1. communicate that you are a proactive, can-do sort of person..

Business schools want leaders, not applicants content with following the herd.

2. Put yourself on ego-alert.

Stress what makes you unique, not what makes you number one.

3. Communicate specific reasons why you're great fit for each school.

Simply stating "I am the ideal candidate for your program" won't convince the admission committee to push you into the admit pile.

Read More: Find Your Business School

4. Bring passion to your writing.

Admissions officers want to know what excites you. And if you'll bring a similar enthusiasm to the classroom.

5. Break the mold.

Challenge perceptions with unexpected essays that say, "There's more to me than you think."

6. If you've taken an unorthodox path to business school, play it up.

Admissions officers appreciate risk-takers.

7. Talk about your gender, ethnicity, minority status or foreign background....

But only if it has affected your outlook or experiences.

8. Fill your essays with plenty of real-life examples.

Specific anecdotes and vivid details make a much greater impact than general claims and broad summaries.

9. Demonstrate a sense of humor or vulnerability.

You're a real person, and it's okay to show it!

BONUS: Don't Make These MBA Essay Mistakes

1. write about your high school glory days. .

Admissions committees don't care if you were editor of the yearbook or captain of the varsity team. They expect their candidates to have moved onto more current, professional achievements.

2. Submit essays that don't answer the questions.

An off-topic essay, or one that merely restates your résumé, will frustrate and bore the admissions committee. More importantly, it won't lead to any new insight about you.

Attend UNC's top-ranked online MBA program without putting your career on hold. See how.

3. Fill essays with industry jargon.

Construct your essays with only enough detail about your job to frame your story and make your point.

4. Reveal half-baked reasons for wanting the MBA.

Admissions officers favor applicants who have well-defined goals. However unsure you are about your future, it's critical that you demonstrate that you have a plan.

5. Exceed the recommended word limits.

This suggests you don't know how to follow directions, operate within constraints or organize your thoughts.

6. Submit an application full of typos and grammatical errors.

A sloppy application suggests a sloppy attitude.

7. Send one school an essay intended for another—or forget to change the school name when using the same essay for several applications.

Admissions committees are (understandably) insulted when they see another school's name or forms.

8. Make excuses.

If your undergraduate experience was one long party, be honest. Discuss how you've matured, both personally and professionally.

9. Be impersonal in the personal statement.

Many applicants avoid the personal like the plague. Instead of talking about how putting themselves through school lowered their GPA, they talk about the rising cost of tuition in America. Admissions officers want to know about YOU.

10. Make too many generalizations.

An essay full of generalizations is a giveaway that you don't have anything to say.

11. Write in a vacuum.

Make sure that each of your essays reinforce and build on the others to present a consistent and compelling representation of who you are, what you've done, and what you bring to the table.

3 Things To Consider When Hiring A Top Ivy League College Consultant

College consultant

Navigating the college admissions process can be overwhelming for both students and parents—particularly for those who aspire to attend Ivy League and other top schools. While well-meaning parents try their best to guide their students through the process, many are shocked to discover how much the admissions landscape has changed since they themselves applied. For instance, Harvard’s already minute acceptance rate dropped by more than half in just over two decades—while the Class of 2000 had an admissions rate of 10.9% , a meager 3.59% of students were admitted to the Class of 2028. Even schools outside of the Ivy League have seen similar plunges—NYU’s acceptance rate for the Class of 2002 was 34% , compared to 8% for the Class of 2028; Northwestern’s acceptance rate for the 2001 admissions cycle was 34.2% and plummeted to 7.5% in the 2023-24 cycle; and in 1999, Vanderbilt saw an admissions rate of over 61% , compared to today’s 5.1% . These declines are due in large part to dramatically swelling applicant pools. Regardless of the cause, these seismic shifts have left parents feeling incapable of helping their students navigate today’s cutthroat and complex college admissions landscape.

This is where private college admissions consultants come in. College consultants offer specialized knowledge and experience in the admissions process, particularly when it comes to applying to prestigious institutions. They can provide personalized guidance tailored to each student’s strengths, interests, and goals—and they are becoming increasingly popular. In 2022, a top private school in New York City, Horace Mann’s student newspaper reported that 33% of upper division students who answered their survey self-reported using a private consultant (a number that is likely higher than reported due to the stigma around college consultants.) Additionally, one in five surveyed incoming freshmen in Harvard’s Class of 2022 reported working with a private admissions consultant.

Despite their rising popularity, it is important for parents to recognize that not all college admissions consultants are created equal. A college admissions consultant is a significant investment in your child’s future, and as such, it is critical to find a consultant whose methods are ethical, results-proven, and aligned with your child’s needs and goals.

As you search for the right consultant to fit your needs, here are three core factors to take into consideration:

1. Credentials

College admissions consultants have an array of backgrounds and expertise, and it is important to think critically about how consultants’ experiences shape their ability to coach your student. While it may be tempting to assume that a consultancy that hires former admissions officers is implicitly capable of preparing your student for the rigors of the admissions process, this is not necessarily the case. The admissions landscape has changed dramatically over the last five years, meaning that a consultant who served on an admissions committee a decade ago will likely not possess special insights about what Ivy League and other top schools are looking for now .

NSA Warns iPhone And Android Users To Turn It Off And On Again

Godzilla minus one is coming to netflix this weekend but there s a catch, what to watch this weekend new streaming shows and movies on netflix hulu prime video and more.

Additionally, the Supreme Court case concerning affirmative action rendered more information about the admissions process publicly available than ever before. We now know how Harvard ranks applicants, what factors are most important in their admissions considerations, and how these factors have changed over time. While more information is now known about what Harvard looks for in its admissions process, a strong admissions consultant’s unique expertise lies in helping an applicant develop such qualities. If a consultancy promises insider information on the admissions process but fails to articulate specific strategies for helping your student boost their admissions profile, they are likely all bark and no bite.

2. Payment Structure

While hiring a college consultant is undoubtedly a financial investment, it should not be a financial surprise . Parents should seek a consultancy that is transparent about cost and that doesn’t nickel-and-dime clients for additional services. Consultants bill in a variety of ways—some are hourly, others charge by the number of schools to which a student wishes to apply, and others offer unlimited, flat-fee packages. Parents should go into consultations with a sense of their student’s needs and goals and pose detailed questions about the costs of additional or non-included services that may be required. Parents should be particularly wary of hourly packages, as the process of applying to college will likely take more time than parents initially assume, leading to unexpected additional fees and ballooning overall costs.

3. Methodology

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, college admissions consultants offer vastly different structures of support for students, and it is critical to understand their strengths and weaknesses before committing to a particular consultancy. A cookie-cutter approach doesn’t work in the competitive landscape of college admissions. Each student has unique strengths, interests, and aspirations, and a top-notch consultant will take the time to understand these individual qualities and craft a tailored strategy that highlights the student’s best attributes. This includes selecting a mix of courses, extracurricular activities, leadership roles, and summer programs that align with the student's goals. They also help students identify and develop their passions, which serves to differentiate students in the eyes of admissions committees.

While some consultancies pair students with one mentor, others take a more team-based approach, assigning multiple team members to work with each student on different aspects of their applications. The latter model can easily become confusing, and communication between students, parents, and members of the consultancy can quickly devolve. Those considering a consultancy that assigns more than one team member to a student should ask detailed questions about the lines of communication and how students will receive a cohesive and centralized plan for boosting their applicant profile. Finally, parents should seek out a consultancy that employs full-time consultants. Many firms hire part-time consultants with other impressive credentials or professional networks—however, these consultants are often stretched thin and struggle to provide the comprehensive support that students need to excel in the process. As a rule of thumb, parents should assume that the process will take more time, energy, and attention than they anticipate, and seek out a consultant who can accommodate their student’s busy schedule as much as possible

Choosing the right college consultant is a significant decision that can impact your student’s future. Take your time to research, ask questions, and evaluate your options carefully. The right consultant will not only help your student craft a strong application but also empower them to present their authentic self in the best possible light and provide them with the tools they will need to excel in college and beyond.
