Tips for using a planner in college if you have ADHD

2. Write down everything

Most planners have blank pages throughout the planner or at the back. Write down any ideas or important thoughts you have throughout the day. Writing down things that are bothering you can help you manage stress .

Write them down in your planner rather than relying on your memory to retain them. Every night, check these pages and review your “brain dump.”

Decide if there’s anything in your notes that you need to act on or write down as a to-do activity. You can always refer back to these notes, but you don’t have to try to remember all the thoughts.

I first came across the Imperfect Inspiration Planner on TikTok thanks to the enthusiasm of many of my favorite ADHD content creators. While these glimpses certainly made it seem promising, the real test was trying it out myself. This planner is clearly crafted by someone who understands the biggest sticking points of ADHD (which isn’t a huge surprise given that the creator has ADHD themselves).

The Imperfect Inspiration Planner is one of the best planner for ADHD thanks to features like multiple different formats and layouts, strong customization features, and excellent prompts for everything from work tasks to daily self-care reminders. I especially love its discbound binding—which was available on the left, right, or top—a format that allows pages to be easily added or removed as needed. Filling it out daily felt like doing a worksheet I knew all the answers to, which, for this giant nerd, was a big plus.

Every part of this journal is encouraging, especially the pep talk and low-pressure instructions it provides on its first two pages. For a person who has felt extremely judged by planners in the past, this one was a breath of fresh air.

The Panda Planner uses a straightforward design, interior storage for important paperwork, and bookmarks to continue unfinished planning.

If you’re looking for an ADHD planner that’s travel-sized and work-appropriate, the Panda Planner is a great option. It offers page layouts that are well designed for those with ADHD, including prompts to help you review the previous week, plan for the next, and focus on long-term goal setting. The pages are undated, meaning you avoid the guilt of wasted paper, and it has a strong mix of short and longer-term planning space available.

Though the binding of this planner doesn’t offer the flexibility of the discbound options, it does have significantly less bulk to it. It’s also sold in a fun array of colors, letting you have a subtler and more professional look without losing the thrill of a pleasing aesthetic along the way. This is a great choice for adults with ADHD who need a small organizational aid.

If an eye-catching design is what you need to remind you to track your daily plans, the vibrant Happy Planner 18 Month Planner is right up your alley.

On a personal level, this planner didn’t work as well for me. I found the number of places to record notes to be overwhelming and had trouble remembering all of my options. The weekly and daily dated pages quickly felt like reminders of failure when I inevitably skipped a day (or several). It also doesn’t include any sort of bookmark, meaning I had to slog through finding the right page each time I closed the planner.

All that being said, I can absolutely see why this planner is so popular with others who have ADHD, and it is very much still worth considering. The designs add a fun, colorful break to the day, and the inspirational quotes sprinkled throughout are a fun surprise. Overall, this planner does what its name promises. It provides a little dose of happy every time you see it, encouraging you to use it more consistently.

The Luechtturm1917 Bullet Journal puts less emphasis on being a planner but still doubles as an organizer as needed.

At its heart, the Bullet Journal may be the very best planner for ADHD and the very worst for neurotypical users. It relies heavily on devoting time, thought, and creativity to how you want to organize your book. Though the included suggestions for layouts help eliminate some of the blank-page anxiety, these loose ideas won’t suffice for everyone.

On the flip side, this method may be extremely appealing to those who like more creative control of their planning, those who need to be more engaged to stay inspired, and those who can’t seem to find a planning process that works for them.

Overall I have really enjoyed using the planner especially the time blocking and that I can file tasks into priority or not. I do wish the lines were spaced a little further apart since I find my writing can get cramped at times. Which fills up the page and overwhelms me and then I look at my planner less. I also wish that there was a section either before or after the project list where I could have longer term smaller tasks that I don't want to dictate a whole project page to. Right now I just have post it notes that I have attached before the project section with smaller task lists like "clean my room" which might take more then one day but isn't really a project. I really appreciate this project and this is the first planner I have been able to consistently use in over 5 years!!

I adore this planner. It's been a lifesaver for me in navigating time management and prioritization. With everything it offers, it helps establish a routine and makes daunting tasks feel more manageable once they're on paper.

My local print shop can easily shave off the spine and add a spiral binding if you want one. Costs is minimal, may vary with size. He has a special machine for this and he has done this before with other books for me. Another option is adding holes for a 3 ring binder. My book was a gift from a family member, (also with ADHD) and is smaller than I expected, but i'm going to give it a try. I do have a question about a reference to finding information related to the project pages on "page 202". My book does not have any pages numbered 202. Perhaps just a typo?

I like the idea of this book, but after having it and using it, it's not usable as a planner. The biggest problem is the book cannot be laided flat. To use it, you have to fight the binding, and the second you let go of it, the book slams shut. It will not stay open. The book should be in a spiral binding so you can flip the pages around to lay flat. I will not buy this product again until there's a spiral binding option.

I looked it over and don't think it will work for me. I will give it a try but for me it seems overwhelming to keep up with all the options it has. ADHD people need simple, don't they?

What if you could “see” your time all laid out in front of you?  Would it help you plan better and accomplish more?  Yes, it would! 

I’ve seen it work over and over and over again with teen clients and myself. 

My goal when working with my teen clients is to help them rein in the  abstract thinking  of the teenage ADHD brain so that they can keep track of the factual portion of what they need to get done.

And I do this by building the habit of writing stuff down. Whatever they need to remember, I tell them to write. it. down. 

We don’t tend to think of planners in this way, but they are really a tool that allows you to “see” your time so you can manage it better. 

And for teens or anyone with ADHD, this is life-changing.

ADHD Hyperfocus Superpower

One thing I’ve learned about the ADHD brain is its ability to hyperfocus on one thing. People with ADHD have to train themselves to use this hyperfocus as a superpower; otherwise, it can get them into trouble when they go down a path of procrastination. 

Before they know it, they’ve watched one hundred youtube videos instead of completing their homework. 

And it’s usually because the homework is floating around in the abstract, whereas the youtube video is concrete, right in front of them, calling their name. 

To ensure that the hyperfocus works as a superpower, they have to turn the abstract task into a concrete task by looking at the actual parameters of the assignment and writing them down. 

When teens with ADHD form a good habit like writing down their assignments in a planner as they receive the instructions, it helps them to improve their time management skills and start to understand how long certain tasks take to complete.

Making the project concrete

What do I mean by making the project concrete?

Your teenager needs to keep track of three things in order to make an assignment concrete. 

  • What the assignment actually is. 

The first step is having teens train themselves to take their planner with them to classes. When the teacher gives the assignment, they should pull out the planner right then and jot down the details on the correct date in the planner. 

Have they really read and comprehended what they’re supposed to be doing, or are they hyperfocusing on an aspect of the instructions that isn’t important. See my blog about  the flashcards fiasco . 

This also applies to studying. When they study, are they studying the right sections, or are they focusing on the parts they already know?

  • When the assignment needs to be done. 

This is all about getting their priorities in the right order. Maybe they feel like they should be finishing that English paper right now when really they should be studying for a Math test that happens a day sooner than the paper is due. A planner will give them a visual map of their priorities. 

To take this even further, you can help your teenager look ahead in Canvas, Schoology, or Google classroom and fill out assignments for the entire month in advance in the month-at-a-glance section of their  planner  

  • What they need to plan around. 

It’s important that their  academic planner  has a section for after school hours and the weekend. Teens need to see their entire week at a glance so that they know which activities are happening at what time every day and can plan accordingly. 

If they have drama practice from 6-7, for example, they’ll need to study at 4:00 or 7:30. It’s all about developing that working memory.

Hi Krista, great question! In our example planner sheet , what we were trying to show is that originally "clean out the fridge" and "clean the house" were both written in for 1 hour (2 hours when multiplied). Because the Available and Realistic times didn't match, the writer moved those to the "Save for Later" and replaced them with much shorter options (Clean out One Shelf in Fridge instead of the whole fridge, and Clean the Kitchen instead of the whole house, and decreased the estimated times to 15 min and 30 minutes before multiplying). So it's ok to adjust the estimated time if you first decrease the task to something much shorter. Hopefully that makes sense, and hope you enjoy the printable! But can you give your child some homework help? Yes, by creating consistent routines at home and school. While it may take a few months for the new routines to become habits, the payoff will come in better work skills, a sense of accomplishment, and lots of after-school smiles.

Allow time to write down homework assignments.

Teachers should post the day’s assignments on the board, and read them aloud to reinforce the information. If attention or language deficits make it hard for some kids to copy down the homework , give everyone a typed assignment sheet to take home.
