The Harvard Ph.D. in Education trains cutting-edge researchers who work across disciplines to generate knowledge and translate discoveries into transformative policy and practice.

Offered jointly by the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Harvard Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Ph.D. in Education provides you with full access to the extraordinary resources of Harvard University and prepares you to assume meaningful roles as university faculty, researchers, senior-level education leaders, and policymakers.

As a Ph.D. candidate, you will collaborate with scholars across all Harvard graduate schools on original interdisciplinary research. In the process, you will help forge new fields of inquiry that will impact the way we teach and learn. The program’s required coursework will develop your knowledge of education and your expertise in a range of quantitative and qualitative methods needed to conduct high-quality research. Guided by the goal of making a transformative impact on education research, policy, and practice, you will focus on independent research in various domains, including human development, learning and teaching, policy analysis and evaluation, institutions and society, and instructional practice.

Curriculum Information

The Ph.D. in Education requires five years of full-time study to complete. You will choose your individual coursework and design your original research in close consultation with your HGSE faculty adviser and dissertation committee. The requirements listed below include the three Ph.D. concentrations: Culture, Institutions, and Society; Education Policy and Program Evaluation; and Human Development, Learning and Teaching .

We invite you to review an example course list, which is provided in two formats — one as the full list by course number and one by broad course category . These lists are subject to modification.

Ph.D. Concentrations and Examples

Summary of Ph.D. Program

Doctoral Colloquia  In year one and two you are required to attend. The colloquia convenes weekly and features presentations of work-in-progress and completed work by Harvard faculty, faculty and researchers from outside Harvard, and Harvard doctoral students. Ph.D. students present once in the colloquia over the course of their career.

Research Apprenticeship The Research Apprenticeship is designed to provide ongoing training and mentoring to develop your research skills throughout the entire program.

Teaching Fellowships The Teaching Fellowship is an opportunity to enhance students' teaching skills, promote learning consolidation, and provide opportunities to collaborate with faculty on pedagogical development.

Comprehensive Exams  The Written Exam (year 2, spring) tests you on both general and concentration-specific knowledge. The Oral Exam (year 3, fall/winter) tests your command of your chosen field of study and your ability to design, develop, and implement an original research project.

Dissertation  Based on your original research, the dissertation process consists of three parts: the Dissertation Proposal, the writing, and an oral defense before the members of your dissertation committee.

Culture, Institutions, and Society (CIS) Concentration

In CIS, you will examine the broader cultural, institutional, organizational, and social contexts relevant to education across the lifespan. What is the value and purpose of education? How do cultural, institutional, and social factors shape educational processes and outcomes? How effective are social movements and community action in education reform? How do we measure stratification and institutional inequality? In CIS, your work will be informed by theories and methods from sociology, history, political science, organizational behavior and management, philosophy, and anthropology. You can examine contexts as diverse as classrooms, families, neighborhoods, schools, colleges and universities, religious institutions, nonprofits, government agencies, and more.

Education Policy and Program Evaluation (EPPE) Concentration

In EPPE, you will research the design, implementation, and evaluation of education policy affecting early childhood, K–12, and postsecondary education in the U.S. and internationally. You will evaluate and assess individual programs and policies related to critical issues like access to education, teacher effectiveness, school finance, testing and accountability systems, school choice, financial aid, college enrollment and persistence, and more. Your work will be informed by theories and methods from economics, political science, public policy, and sociology, history, philosophy, and statistics. This concentration shares some themes with CIS, but your work with EPPE will focus on public policy and large-scale reforms.

Human Development, Learning and Teaching (HDLT) Concentration

In HDLT, you will work to advance the role of scientific research in education policy, reform, and practice. New discoveries in the science of learning and development — the integration of biological, cognitive, and social processes; the relationships between technology and learning; or the factors that influence individual variations in learning — are transforming the practice of teaching and learning in both formal and informal settings. Whether studying behavioral, cognitive, or social-emotional development in children or the design of learning technologies to maximize understanding, you will gain a strong background in human development, the science of learning, and sociocultural factors that explain variation in learning and developmental pathways. Your research will be informed by theories and methods from psychology, cognitive science, sociology and linguistics, philosophy, the biological sciences and mathematics, and organizational behavior.

10 great PhD scholarships in the US for international students 2022

If you’re an international student looking for PhD scholarships, consider the US. With over 4,000 universities and six different time zones across 50 states, the US is one of the most popular study destinations in the world. Three main reasons why the US continues to attract PhD students despite their geographical location (usually taking up to two days to arrive from elsewhere) and high living costs as befits a developed nation, are outlined below.

Firstly, the US is home to many world-class universities with robust global  rankings – some of them are even in the top 100 world universities. Even though ranking is not an all-important reason to choose a university to do a PhD, it makes sense to study in one of the world’s best-ranked universities, and where else but to choose the US.

Secondly, the US PhD takes a longer time than PhDs in other countries. This is not necessarily a bad thing because when the US PhD takes up to five years or longer to complete, you will have more time to adjust, settle in and eventually thrive in your studies.

Finally, students doing their PhDs in the US are almost guaranteed to have a tuition fee waiver. They will get a stipend from the university for the entire duration of their studies as well, which makes for an attractive incentive.

However, if you want to get this funded PhD in the US, especially in the top-ranked universities, it is always a good idea to apply as early as possible before their deadlines. If you miss the scholarship deadline, you can still apply and be accepted for the PhD.

Here is a list of US PhD scholarships and stipends that will help you achieve your dream of studying in the US.

PhD Scholarship 1: University of Idaho

As one of the top 100 for the best value in the US, the University of Idaho is a great choice to do your PhD, thanks to the low cost of living and tuition fees. The College of Graduate Studies has several knowledgeable staff who can advise you on the wide array of financial aid resources as well.

You need to have a relevant master’s degree to be able to apply for this scholarship by Apr. 1, 2022. • Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe the desired impact your research will make on the field and society, and why this is important to you. Include any personal, educational and/or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests.
  • Student essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes or contributed to group efforts over time. (A leadership role can mean more than just a title. It can mean being a mentor to others, acting as the person in charge of a specific task, or taking the lead role in organizing an event or project. Think about what you accomplished and what you learned from the experience. What were your responsibilities? Did you lead a team? How did your experience change your perspective on leading others? Did you help to resolve an important dispute at your school, church, in your community or an organization? And your leadership role doesn’t necessarily have to be limited to school activities. For example, do you help out or take care of your family?)

Students will need the following documents in a single, flat (not portfolio) PDF file in order to complete an application (in English only):

  • Student applicant’s resume with links to website and publications (if available)
  • Short (one-page) resume/CV of the student applicant's primary PhD program advisor
  • 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the applicant's work (at least one from the thesis advisor for current PhD students)
  • Applicant's essay response (350-word limit) to: Describe the desired impact your research will make on the field and society, and why this is important to you. Include any personal, educational and/or professional experiences that have motivated your research interests.
  • Applicant's essay response (350-word limit) to: What are your long-term goals for your pathway in computing research, and how would receiving the Google PhD Fellowship help you progress toward those goals in the short-term?

25 PSU Faculty Members Ranked Among Most-Cited Science Researchers in 2022

New Data on Science Citations Highlights the Impact of PSU Research

by Molly Baer Kramer November 16th 2023 Share

A woman examines a glass container in a laboratory

25 PSU faculty members were ranked among the top 100,000 most-cited science researchers in the world in 2022, according to an update to a database released last month.

The  Stanford-Elsevier rankings , produced by John P.A. Ioannidis of Stanford University, was compiled using Scopus data and published in the Elsevier Data Repository on October 4, 2023.

More than six million scientists who have each published at least five papers in scientific journals were evaluated for this data, hence the significance of being included within the top 100,000, or 2%, of this global community.

"The individuals included in this list embody PSU’s dedication to exceptional research and scholarship," said Rick Tankersley, Vice President of Research and Graduate Studies. “We are proud that their contributions are also recognized by their peers around the world.”

Here are the PSU faculty members ranked among the top 100,000 scientists throughout the world who were most-cited in their fields during 2022, along with the number of citations (within scientific journals only):

The dataset also compiles ‘career’ researchers who ranked among the top 100,000 most-cited science researchers in their fields from 1996-2022 (within scientific journals only). The following 16 PSU faculty members – including 11 from the 2022 list – earned this honor:

The unsolved opportunities for cybersecurity providers

The COVID-19 pandemic has forced rapid changes on corporate cybersecurity functions. Chief information-security officers (CISOs) have had to adjust their strategies to account for remote working, pivoting from working on routine tasks to working on long-term goals of establishing secure connections for remote situations. Managing business continuity has been the goal, with the patching of remote systems over virtual private networks, handling of those systems’ increased workloads, and monitoring of spiking cyberthreat levels and cyberattackers targeting at-home workers with an array of threats. In fact, a McKinsey survey of cybersecurity providers found a near-sevenfold increase in spear-phishing attacks since the pandemic began.

The challenges that face organizations are also forcing cybersecurity providers to pivot, adjusting their strategies and their product and service offerings to meet postpandemic objectives. That must be done in a manner that accommodates the new security landscape but continues to monitor customers’ needs while adjusting sales, service, and training accordingly. The elements that enterprises must secure (data, devices, people, networks, machines, and applications), how they must secure them (prevention, detection, response, and remediation), and why it’s important to secure them (to mitigate loss of lives and livelihoods) continue to evolve, and cybersecurity providers have yet to solve several crucial customer challenges. The stakes have never been higher.

Insights from the results of the cybersecurity-provider survey revealed that CISOs and cybersecurity-operations teams will continue to invest niche spending in the areas of perimeter security, next-generation identity and access controls, remote access, security automation, and security training. With a vast ecosystem of technology platforms and partners, cybersecurity providers will need to differentiate themselves. The research suggests that there remain four unsolved challenges: the visibility gap, fragmentation of technology, the talent gap, and the measurement of ROI. Addressing even one of these challenges can help providers gain a sustainable edge in an ever-evolving, fragmented, and competitive market.

Visibility gap

Without visibility into digital infrastructure, it will be difficult for companies to recognize when, where, or why there is a problem. According to a recent McKinsey survey of approximately 200 buyers of security-operations applications (such as security-information and -event management and security-orchestration, -automation, and -response tools) in the enterprise market (companies with more than 1,000 employees or topline revenue more than $1 billion), around 60 percent of buyers analyze and triage less than 40 percent of their enterprises’ log data. Worse, that figure may be understated: third-party and software-as-a-service log data are often excluded, since they are not prioritized for collection and analysis in many enterprise environments.

Case example: Cybersecurity visibility

Today’s typical enterprise environment, though, can make that necessary visibility difficult (see sidebar “Case example: Cybersecurity visibility”). Chief information officers and CISOs also need to rethink their analytics strategies, with an eye on deploying analytics designed for the volume and nature of today’s data, both structured and especially unstructured.

The best way to begin any compliance or security program is to assure telemetry at the endpoint, thus helping ensure that automated communication processes from multiple data sources are normalized and standardized for faster and more consistent analysis. That element alone can contribute to better customer experience, application health, quality, and performance, in addition to more scrutiny from a security standpoint. The sad truth is that few, if any, enterprises are confident that they have accurate and comprehensive telemetry to detect an intrusion in their environment. In solving the telemetry and visibility gap, cybersecurity providers should perform the following actions:

  • Rethink the ‘pay by the drink’ approach (such as pay per log) to volume-based pricing models. Such payment mechanisms are unsustainable at scale for enterprises, particularly when considering an enterprise’s consumption models for cloud architecture and infrastructure. Offerings should be adjusted to solve rate limits of mass data processing at the peta- or terabyte level.
  • Identify the missing puzzle pieces to building a 360° view. The security-telemetry implication is often the tip of the iceberg. In many companies, the broader ecosystems for IT- and data-asset management have not matured to keep up with the security approaches. Leading providers will build tooling that can construct an outside-in view of the puzzle and identify the critical missing pieces. Such business-aware, intelligent tooling provides substantial value to a cybersecurity-function because it shifts the conversation with business leaders away from numbers to the value chain and revenue streams of the business. Educating customers on how to plan for cost reduction and be purposeful about which logs they select to ingest, as well as building low-cost data lakes that can affordably collect all logs for pretriage to feed into the system of choice for security-information and -event management, can bridge the gap in the interim. That means that sales engineers, architects, analysts, and other personnel are critical in identifying puzzle pieces that are missing (or redundant) as part of the presales process to demonstrate to security buyers how a technology will close visibility gaps.
  • Reduce false positives, forcing the organization to approach cyberthreats proactively, not reactively. The improved use of AI and machine learning provides a holistic view of an entire security program, including on-premises, in the cloud, across geographies, within business units, and from remote networks. Transparency here allows an organization to prioritize potential threats. By reducing false positives, it has a clearer picture of cyberthreats such as vulnerabilities, unpatched systems, and misconfigurations.

Technology-fragmentation challenge

Part of a CISO’s job has an impossibility element. Their teams are supposed to protect against future cyberattacks, with the nature, method, timing, scale, and identity of those attackers unknown. Those frightening unknowns fuel a fear of reducing the number of security applications, even seemingly redundant ones (perhaps obtained through an acquisition), because it’s possible that the targeted app might be the one to save the enterprise.

Enterprises grapple with the timeliness challenge of technology decisions (where and how to balance agile-best integrated options with fragile, fragmented, best-of-breed options), since different technology, applications, and providers are used across an organization. Often, a company may have more than 100 third-party security tools in use. In many cases, that number is driven by the CISO’s expanding mandate—and desire not to be the one who cancels the tool that might prevent the next big breach. There are several key drivers of this security complexity.

The enterprise perimeter has changed in recent years as the paths to access data assets has soared, with no single perimeter existing. The influx of IT functions hosting on-premises, private- and public-cloud environments is upon us. As a result, multi- and hybrid-cloud security will continue to be critical, and CISOs will be willing to pay for increasingly hard-to-find skills (such as mainframe security) from a service provider.

With many industries, the first challenge of operational-technology (OT) security is identifying who “owns” it. Once resolved, the logical next questions follow: Who funds it, who operates it, and what are the intersection points between IT and OT security? A duplication of security controls, policies, frameworks, and vendors across both IT and OT only drives complexity further.

The interlinkages among data governance , data privacy, and cybersecurity have precariously positioned the CISO as the only first-line enforcer amid a second-line function. With the continued expansion of data regulations, data-sovereignty laws, and customer interest in data privacy, the CISO is increasingly asked to add tooling, process, and prioritization to retrofit privacy into security. In many cases, that has led to a proliferation of tooling, such as data classification, data tagging, data-access governance, and privacy management, where the operating model between information security and privacy (compliance concerns) can get blurry.

While CISOs report varying degrees to which they have a seat at the table during M&A, one thing is for sure: after M&A, they will have plenty of cleanup to do. Companies are vulnerable to cyberattacks during acquisitions, which means that the last thing a CISO wants to do is rip and replace the tooling, leaving unknown vulnerabilities exposed. To understand capabilities, cyberthreats, and critical data, integration teams can prioritize a target’s function-specific technology applications  by categorizing each. Here lies an opportunity for cybersecurity providers to offer material value.

To help CISOs extract themselves from the “one-way ratchet” that is enterprise cybersecurity tooling today, cybersecurity providers need to perform the following actions:

  • Produce offerings that allow for seamless simplification of sprawl. Deploy a product that takes over incumbent functionality, generates data to show the efficacy of the new layer offering (such as recurring money and time saved by rationalizing tooling), and enables the sunsetting of old, legacy approaches.
  • Use cloud and software-as-a-service adoption or updates as an opportunity for tool rationalization. Providers must maintain relationships with major cloud platforms, emphasizing native integration with software and platform leaders, as hybrid scenarios with on-premises, public- and private-cloud expand. Many major platform players have invested significantly in managing their relationships with cloud service providers.
  • Engage all stakeholders, make business-based simplification decisions, and don’t put all the cybersecurity burden on the CISO. Organizations should empower their CISOs to make risk-based simplification decisions, gaining cross-functional support for key simplification decisions so the burden (and after any incident, the blame) do not rest solely on the CISO.

Cybersecurity-talent gap

With more than 3.12 million jobs in cybersecurity estimated to be unfilled in 2021, 1 “Cybersecurity workforce demand,” US National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education, 2021. the talent shortage is a massive problem, and it’s affecting both clients and providers. The use of technology—primarily AI and its machine-learning offspring—has helped slightly, especially in a security-operations center dealing with an active cyberattack. But the technology is primarily supplementing security analysts, allowing human capacity to be more efficient and to focus more on tasks where their experience and creativity are essential. Addressing the talent gap takes innovation and persistence:

  • Recruiting realities. To manage the skill gap, cybersecurity providers may want to focus on offerings that are not as people intensive to deploy and manage or maintain. To remain talent competitive, providers should get creative when it comes to recruiting, training, and retaining talent, such as looking beyond traditional places, finding individuals with similar skills sets that can be trained, looking beyond formal education, and so on.
  • More one-shop and full-stack-service providers (such as ‘infra in a box’) . Companies are moving away from the approach of product-delivery deployment and moving toward annual subscription models that include service delivery.
  • Impact of delivery preferences on customers’ key buying factors. Delivery preferences are critical. For example, the rate of false positives has historically been a top buying factor in several security-product markets, for a logical reason: the more false positives, the more frustration and manual effort for security-operations teams to trudge through every day. However, as the delivery of those products has shifted to a service-driven approach, buyers care less about false positives because they no longer see level-one and -two data. Instead, the triage stage is outsourced almost entirely by the product provider’s service team. Buying preference moves farther right along the value chain to the value and actionability of the intelligence, response time, and so on.

Cybersecurity’s ROI

The most successful cybersecurity program is one that no one notices and that enables the underlying business to function unhindered. Organizations today struggle with understanding how to measure the return or value of a dollar spent on cybersecurity, as well as how to communicate its value to internal stakeholders, such as C-suite and board members. Providers should structure their output, reporting, and dashboards to speak to business audiences, as well as technical audiences. Provider solutions should take credit for all their accomplishments.

If an industry is not implementing the right cybersecurity programs and therefore spending less than their needs demand, there is no comfort in looking at its neighbors from a comparison standpoint. Maturity in no way guarantees resilience, but it does help define and measure ROI appropriately. To have a true security proposition, there are at least three dimensions that the cybersecurity provider community should consider:

  • Business value. Do the organization’s security offerings reflect the priorities of its customers’ businesses today? When those business priorities change, can its security program adjust its priorities effectively? When there’s a crisis, can it quickly map online services to business processes?
  • Customer value. Does the customer see the organization’s security capabilities as a differentiator? Do they know it is managing top risks?
  • Market value . Do external stakeholders, including investors, vendors, and third-party supply chains, understand the organization’s security journey and the impact of the security team over time? Are security capabilities included as part of the company’s valuation? How does the organization talk about security to “the Street”?

Continuing to evolve

For cybersecurity providers, the ability to offer customers real-time technology and services that speak to the business, not only the CISO, is crucial. They also need to demonstrate the right value and key performance indicators to measure outcomes, which is the first step on the journey to helping its customers differentiate as security-minded businesses.

Case example: Cybersecurity trust

The four challenges detailed in this article can be solved, and a wait-and-see approach is not advised. It is important to realize that the challenges are fundamental to the industry and to define the constraints within which the industry operates. Executives must be cognizant of such issues, as well as try to solve them. But most importantly, cybersecurity professionals need to be open and transparent about them with internal stakeholders, working in collaboration to solve each challenge (see sidebar “Case example: Cybersecurity trust”).

From a go-to-market perspective, cybersecurity vendors that can appeal to business, functional, and technology executives alike will have more success in becoming household names.

Olivia and liam reign supreme — 2023 most popular baby names.

May 10, 2024 • By Dawn Bystry, Associate Commissioner, Office of Strategic and Digital Communications

Last Updated: May 10, 2024

Olivia and Liam are once again America’s most popular baby names, with 2023 being the fifth consecutive year that parents have chosen the monikers for their little ones.  Also, for the fifth consecutive year, Noah took the second slot for boys, and Emma for girls.  Only one new name appeared in the Top 10 lists this year, with Mateo joining the boys for the first time.

Hear the Top 10 Baby Names from Commissioner O’Malley

Olivia and Liam are Social Security’s top baby names for fifth consecutive year

Every year, Social Security celebrates Mother’s Day by announcing the 1000 most popular baby names. You can view the full list at www.ssa.gov/babynames , and see how popular your name was the year you were born and where it’s ranked now.

“Happy Mother’s Day to all the incredible moms in our lives. Your love, strength, and selflessness motivate us all, and we thank you for everything you do,” said Social Security Commissioner Martin O’Malley. “Know that Social Security is here to help you continue to provide for your families – by securing a Social Security number for your child, filing for benefits for yourself or your family members, and so much more. We will never stop working for you.”

Social Security’s programs are particularly important for women, who made up 55 percent of adult Social Security beneficiaries in 2023. Women typically have longer life expectancies than men and earn less income over their lifetime due to the combined impact of the gender wage gap, caregiving responsibilities, overrepresentation in low-paid jobs, and more. Social Security also provides critical benefits to 2.6 million children, including nearly one million low-income children with disabilities who receive Supplemental Security Income benefits. People can visit www.ssa.gov to learn more about how Social Security’s expanded digital services make it easier than ever for women and children to access critical benefits and services.

What’s in a Name?

Parents apply for their child’s Social Security card when they are born, making the agency America’s top source for baby names. The agency began compiling the baby names list in 1997, with names dating back to 1880. Each year, the list reveals the effect of pop culture on naming trends.

It’s clear that social media stars had a major influence on new parents in 2023. The fastest rising girl’s name, Kaeli, went viral in 2023, rising a whopping 1,692 spots. Parents must have really smashed the ‘like’ button for YouTube and TikTok star Kaeli McEwen (also known as Kaile Mae), who routinely promotes a clean, tidy, and neutral-aesthetic lifestyle. On the boy’s side, trending in third place as the boy’s fastest riser, is Eiden – perhaps it was TikTok creator Wyatt Eiden’s 1.6 billion views and over 3 million followers that prompted this name’s meteoric rise.

Powerful names also proved very attractive to parents in 2023. Emryn made her debut in the Top 1000 baby names after moving up 1,287 spots – Ryn translates to “ruler,” so it is no shock to see Emryn becoming a leader amongst the girls. Meanwhile Chozen, the second fastest rising boy’s name, fought up to number 813 in 2023.  The character Chozen becomes a hero in the latest season of the hit Netflix show, Cobra Kai – wax on, wax off!

Here are the top five fastest rising boys’ and girls’ names in 2023:

Please visit www.ssa.gov/babynames to view the entire list and see where your name ranks now and over the past 100 years.

NBA

TNT Sports’ boss said they didn’t need the NBA — we’re about to find out

NBA on TNT

One of the core aspects of basketball is trash talk. It has seemingly been part of the game since Dr. Naismith taped up his first peach basket in 1891 at Springfield College: If you talk the talk, you have to back it up.

That is why Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s diss track from 2022 is underpinning the sudden jump ball between Zaslav’s TNT Sports and NBC for the last NBA TV rights deal that is still up for grabs. Two years ago, Zaslav dunked on NBA commissioner Adam Silver’s league.

“We don’t have to have the NBA,” said Zaslav, who is reportedly paid like an NBA star at nearly $50 million a year , during an RBC investor conference.

Zaslav’s words zinged the ears of Silver and NBA executives. It has left Zaslav and TNT Sports fighting for their NBA lives with a Faustian choice.

Zaslav can either show fiscal restraint and lose the NBA to NBC, puncturing TNT Sports in the process, or he can pay the reported $2.5 billion per season asking price for a lesser package than he currently owns, proving that he does need the NBA.

Any deal for TNT or NBC is expected to include a conference final every other year, as opposed to TNT’s current setup of every season. Either network is anticipated to hold onto the yearly All-Star Game broadcast.

At this point, it seems apparent that ESPN’s chairman Jimmy Pitaro, and Amazon Prime Video’s top sports executive Jay Marine, and their bosses — who are already at the negotiation’s medal stand waiting for the third winner — have done a better job than Zaslav and his top lieutenants.

As reported by the Wall Street Journal and confirmed by The Athletic , ESPN will pay $2.6 billion each season for the NBA Finals and conference finals, while Amazon Prime Video will receive a conference final every other year and is expected to be in the $1.8 billion-per-year range.

Meanwhile, NBC is sitting there, aggressively going after Zaslav’s deal. It is a multi-faceted corporate move by Comcast-owned NBC that would reunite the league with its Michael Jordan-era partner and “Roundball Rock” theme song and comes with an already set one-two play-by-play punch of Mike Tirico and Noah Eagle.

David Zaslav

While cable may be dwindling, Comcast is still in the business. If Zaslav and TNT Sports no longer air NBA games, Comcast could conceivably attempt to drop the price of its roughly $3 per month fee on subscribers. It could add up to millions in savings for Comcast.

Meanwhile, NBC is offering to put games on its broadcast network, where they could fit snugly after “Sunday Night Football” ends in early January. NBC also wants the NBA to prop up its subscription streamer, Peacock. And, although not the incumbent, the NBA may prefer NBC as its teammate for this package.

While TNT Sports has broadcast the NBA for nearly four decades, it includes countless employees with long-term NBA ties and boasts Charles Barkley and the iconic “Inside the NBA” studio show, NBCUniversal chairman Mark Lazarus is the media executive with the long-term relationship with the league.

From 1999 to 2003, Lazarus headed TNT Sports. During that time, the network hired Barkley, arguably the greatest sports studio analyst of all time.

Lazarus also developed strong relationships with Silver and NBA chief rights negotiator Bill Koenig.

At Turner, Lazarus ascended to the head of Turner Entertainment, overseeing all of their programming from TNT to TBS. By 2008, though, he was fired.

He went on to resurrect his career with NBC, where he now sits atop NBCUniversal Media Group.

“Both NBC and me, personally, have long histories with the NBA from my Turner years,” Lazarus said at the IMG Summit last September. “It’s a wonderful product in the States and globally. It’s a really valuable product, it’s culturally relevant in ways maybe some other sports aren’t — it speaks to multiple generations.

“So we’re intrigued by that, but we’re not an incumbent, and the process will come and go as it does.”

The process is ongoing, and it is hard to see how Zaslav wins. If he pays top dollar to keep a lesser package, he will dishonor his words about not needing the NBA, even if he has since tried to walk them back somewhat, professing his love for the league. If he loses the NBA, what becomes of TNT Sports, even if it still has MLB , the NCAA Tournament, NHL and NASCAR ?

TNT’s NBA history is stellar, and many of the people who built it remain with the network, waiting by their phones to find out what the future holds. They are at the ground level grinding, while Zaslav is at the games.

During New York Knicks first-round playoff games, TNT showed Zaslav sitting courtside when it did its celebrity roll call. Those things don’t happen by accident; especially, and notably, on the late-April night the network’s exclusive negotiations rights window was closing.

TNT’s coverage is iconic because of all the memorable moments with Ernie Johnson, Kenny Smith, Shaquille O’Neal and Barkley. But the words that may define it, if this is the end of an era, could belong to Zaslav, who, at last resort, may also prove those words were hollow if he tries to prevent NBC from completing the steal.

Zaslav talked trash, but Silver has the ball, and the commissioner may decide who he wants to take the final shot.

Empowering small and midsize businesses for growth with generative AI

  • Kenneth Andrew,

Two people smiling looking at a cell phone. One person is holding a tablet.

AI has quickly become the next big wave of technology with the power to increase operational efficiency, improve sales and marketing, and improve customer and employee retention. For small and mid-size businesses (SMBs), these advantages are not just beneficial but also pivotal for growth. Despite the challenges of rising costs, and economic volatility, SMBs are well-positioned to navigate these uncertainties with AI as a powerful ally, paving the way for a future with greater growth.

Even prior to the introduction of generative AI innovations, Microsoft set out to understand the unique situation small businesses face by surveying over 3,000 SMBs across 10 countries. In examining the relationship between SMBs’ technology adoption, technology partners, and business results, a key finding was the connection between early adoption of technology with achieving business objectives.

Image of attitude to technology adoption on change in annual revenue.

Businesses identified as early adopters of technology are 1.9X more likely to have higher revenue growth over the past year, 1.3X more likely to have improved brand awareness and therefore grew their customer base, 1.5X more likely to have improved employee satisfaction. 1

Another key finding was the role and importance of technology partners. SMBs represent 17% of early adopters and they focus on trying to use the latest technology in their business. Unlike technology laggards, early adopters were 7X more likely to view collaboration with technology partners as essential to achieving their objectives. 1

If early adoption of technology and collaboration with technology partners is crucial, where do SMBs go from here?

At Microsoft Advertising, we’re keenly aware of the opportunity AI presents to small and midsized businesses. We've made investments to empower SMBs to exceed their business objectives. After all, we're in the business of empowering yours!

  • Reach new audiences you won’t find on other platforms – we’ve built an ecosystem to better fuel SMB growth and transformed into a global multi-channel advertising solution with a more robust Microsoft Advertising Network of audiences and placements.
  • Use generative AI to accelerate your creativity and insights – we are enabling advertisers to wield generative AI to improve productivity, performance and growth.
  • Receive support from an expert  – we’ve expanded how we support and partner with advertisers on their terms.

Reach new audiences you won’t find on other platforms

In case you missed it, Microsoft Advertising has undergone its own transformation. From a global search supplier to a multi-channel digital advertising solution to help advertisers of all sizes access their audiences as they search, work, stream and play across Microsoft properties – and beyond.

In fact, the Microsoft Advertising Network reaches over 1 billion high-spend, highly engaged consumers globally. We’ve built an advertising solution that helps you engage audiences with search, shopping, native, display, video, CTV, and retail media placements, across our owned Microsoft properties, exclusive partner sites, and the open web.

A pie chart showcasing all Microsoft Advertising Platform products and its features.

We’re also revolutionizing how people find answers and make decisions with Microsoft Copilot, our generative AI-powered chat. Earlier this year, we reached 5 billion chats 2  in Microsoft Copilot and the number of journeys including Microsoft Copilot have grown 4X faster than traditional search alone. 3  And during our recent earnings call, we announced that Bing had surpassed 140 million daily active users. For small and midsize businesses, this means being able to reach customers in an innovative new engagement channel, with ads in Microsoft Copilot. Advertisers can easily extend popular search ad formats—such as text ads, shopping campaigns, and multimedia ads into the Microsoft Copilot experience. Advertisers are seeing a 30% lift in clickthrough rate when a journey included both search and Microsoft Copilot. 3

Use generative AI to accelerate your creativity and insights

We recognize that especially small businesses, but also midsize businesses, deal with certain barriers more acutely than larger enterprises, like access to finance, lack of time, skills shortages, and competing priorities. This is why we’ve made significant investments in the Microsoft Advertising Platform to help level the playing field with AI.

  • Simpler user experience for advertisers – We’ve launched a redesigned Microsoft Advertising Platform to be more intuitive and user-friendly, especially for small businesses. In addition to our simplified design and goal-based campaign creation flow, every user has access to Copilot in the Microsoft Advertising Platform , your AI companion for digital advertising. With Copilot in the Microsoft Advertising Platform, managing your advertising campaigns is effortless. Leverage tailored recommendations for your images, headlines and descriptions and easily access always available support.
  • All-in-one, multi-channel campaigns – With our expansive Microsoft Advertising Network, we wanted to make it easier for advertisers to launch and manage campaigns across a multitude of formats, placements, and customer journeys. Performance Max campaigns bring together our best automation and AI features to create a multi-channel campaign across search, shopping, audience placements that optimizes for conversions to maximize ROI.
  • Saves valuable time and effort – Microsoft Advertising has always offered import tools to quickly get an existing campaign up-and-running. But now, we’ve integrated generative AI into the campaign creation flow with Copilot in the Microsoft Advertising Platform to boost productivity when building a new campaign such as Performance Max. When you provide a website URL, Copilot in the Microsoft Advertising Platform automatically recommends image and copy assets for your campaign, so you never have to start from scratch again. Copilot in the Microsoft Advertising Platform also has built-in tools that help you refine recommended assets. For campaign assets, you can provide a text prompt to re-theme your recommendations. For copy, you can click a button to refine the tone, find similar copy, or generate re-written options.

  • Affordably amplify your creative capabilities – For small businesses, commissioning custom images for marketing campaigns can often feel out of reach, either from a budgetary standpoint or skills gap. With Copilot in the Microsoft Advertising Platform, any business can stand out in their marketing, because generative AI empowers anyone to create beautiful, custom imagery with a text prompt. Likewise, Copilot in the Microsoft Advertising Platform gives any team access to copywriting capabilities.

Example of Copilot generating an image of a couple enjoying a walk around Edinburgh.

  • Personalization powered by AI – Communicating the right message, visual, and call-to-action at the right time to the right audience is key to optimizing performance. These campaign settings let AI do the work for you. Predictive Targeting allows advertisers to target audiences based on audience intent. We use our audience intelligence signals to match your ads with relevant audiences, which also helps you find new audiences that you may not have considered targeting, who are more likely to convert. Performance Max campaigns in Microsoft Advertising are built with these predictive tools—in addition to the asset recommendations to help you personalize the right messages to show in your ads based on audience intent.
  • Unlock new opportunities – Your AI-powered Performance Max campaigns are designed to find the highest-ROI conversion opportunities for your business, but there are some additional tools to help you get the most out of any budget. You can look at Performance Max reports to see how your top assets are performing, and in the next few weeks, Copilot in the Microsoft Advertising Platform will also be able to provide a campaign performance summary in chat.

These are some of the AI-powered features we’ve been developing to enable growth for small businesses. At their core, they simply help advertisers take advantage of the Microsoft Advertising Network with more ease, efficiency, and effectiveness.

Quote from Temesgen Zerighaber: Overall I have been impressed with the way Copilot in the Microsoft Advertising Platform has helped with building ad copy that is both refreshing and relevant.
