IELTS Writing Task 2: Music Essay (Band 9)

Here’s my band 9 sample answer for the question below.

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

1. Sample Band 9

It is often said that music has the power to unite and connect people, regardless of their cultural backgrounds or ages. I completely agree with this view, and will give my reasons below.

Music can certainly reach across cultural and national boundaries and bring people together. Perhaps the best example of this would be the Live Aid concerts that took place back in the 1980s, and which were broadcast to a global audience. Two live events were held simultaneously in the UK and the US, and the objective was to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia. The concerts were a huge success, both in terms of the number of people around the world who watched them and their impact on international public awareness of the famine. They demonstrated, I believe, that music truly is the planet’s global language.

Just as it transcends cultures, music also has the ability to connect people from different generations. Regardless of age, we can all enjoy a memorable melody, a strong rhythm or a beautiful singing voice, and the best songs seem to have the same magical effect on all of us. This would explain why televised music competitions, such as ‘The X Factor’ or ‘The Voice’, are such popular prime-time shows. These programmes attract incredibly broad audiences because singing and popular songs appeal to children, parents and grandparents alike. I would argue that no other form of entertainment can bring families together in this way.

In conclusion, I believe that music is unique in its capacity to create shared experiences between people, irrespective of culture and age.

2. Sample Band 9

Many believe that music is an effective means of strengthening the bond between people from different cultural backgrounds and generations. From my perspective, I wholeheartedly agree with this point of view.

To begin with, music has an exceptional ability to evoke a wide range of feelings of the listeners such as sadness, anger, and happiness regardless of their country of origin. Although it is true that the lyrics of a song might be incomprehensible due to the language barrier, its melody is linguistically neutral . In fact, in order to feel the melody of a song, the listener does not need to fully understand the language in which the song is written. For example, a Vietnamese may fall in love with a Korean pop song or a Japanese may shed tears while listening to a melancholic piece of music written by an American musician. This is a clear evidence that shows music is a universal language that transcends all cultural boundaries.

In addition, music is a common ground for people to understand each other better irrespective of their age. Nowadays, it is not surprising to see young individuals are fond of the nostalgic feel of a song released years ago, and likewise, modern music genres such as hip-hop, rap, and techno are also becoming increasingly popular amongst older people. For instance, it is commonplace to see a family of different generations gathered together in a karaoke room, singing and dancing to the same song with much joy.

In conclusion, music is an important part of people’s lives and it can also act as a powerful means of uniting people of different cultures and ages

Music is one of those universal topics that affect almost all people. Whether you live in France or Zimbabwe, Brazil or China, you have almost certainly listened to music and maybe even played music. We all have opinions and ideas about it, so it makes music the perfect IELTS topic .

In today’s lesson, I am going to tell you how the topic of music could occur throughout the IELTS exam, as well as teach you some music vocabulary.

Music Vocabulary

First of all, let’s look at some language we can use to talk about music. I would like to break this into two categories: musical genres and musical instruments.

Music Genres

It can be useful to talk about the type (genre) of music that you like. This will certainly help you in part one of the IELTS speaking test.

Some genres include:

The list could go on. What’s most important is that you can talk about the type of music that matters to you. Let’s say you are into rock music. Well, you probably don’t just like “rock,” do you? It’s going to be more specific than that:

alternative rock
heavy metal
death metal
speed metal

Musical Instruments

It’s also worth knowing the names of some musical instruments. In fact, that’s an integral part of music vocabulary. Here are some common ones:

You can learn more music vocabulary by listening to podcasts, watching videos, or reading articles.

IELTS Speaking Topics: Music

It is most likely that you will encounter the topic of music in the IELTS speaking test. This could occur in any part, but I suppose part one is probably where it occurs the most.

For part one, the questions are going to be pretty general. They will revolve around your personal views and could be as simple as:

Do you like listening to music?
What sort of music do you listen to?
Can you play any musical instruments?

Remember that for this part of the test you should give full answers but you don’t need to say very much. For example, to the first question I might respond:

Yes, I quite like listening to music. To be honest, I don’t listen to it that much, but when I go to the gym or when I am cooking I will put on a Spotify playlist.

You can see that this is just two sentences with relatively little information, but for part one you aren’t required to speak at length. Just try to answer the question honestly and then maybe say one more thing – such as a justification for your statement.

I’ll answer the other two questions so that you can see what I mean:

Q: What sort of music do you listen to? A: I have a fairly eclectic taste in music, but I suppose I lean towards rock more than anything. I like bands from the sixties and seventies, like Bob Dylan and Creedence Clearwater Revival. Q: Can you play any musical instruments? A: I got a guitar when I was about fourteen or fifteen and technically I’ve been playing it since then… but really I have no musical talent whatsoever. I can play a few songs but I don’t have a sense of rhythm or tone, so I’m not very good.

You might also be asked about concerts, so it is helpful to have a range of ideas and language. Music is more than just instruments and songs.

IELTS Cue Cards About Music

It is also possible that you could be asked to describe something musical for part two of the speaking test. Here are two possibilities:

Describe a musical instrument you want to learn
Describe a musician that you admire
Describe your favourite singer

Of course, these would require totally different approaches and have their own challenges.

If you encountered a question about music in part three of the speaking test, it would likely ask you about music and age, culture, or gender. I suspect the question might ask you about generational differences in music – ie whether you and your grandparents could enjoy the same songs.

IELTS Writing Questions about Music

Music comes up less frequently in IELTS writing because it is hard to put it into an IELTS framework without making it really specific. I mean to say that turning the topic of music into an IELTS question might require some specialist knowledge, which is not possible with IELTS questions. You would not be asked about the fine details of the music industry, for example.

Still, I have found two IELTS essay questions about music, which I will share with you belong alongside my sample answers.

Sample Essay #1

Here is one possible question, although you can see that it is not 100% focused on the topic of music:

Some people believe that playing a musical instrument can be beneficial in many different ways. Others think it is a waste of time to play a musical instrument. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

This question is about musical instruments but you do not have to know the name of many. Instead, you just have to be able to talk about them in general. Think of the benefits of playing an instrument – it is relaxing, it is fun, it is creative, etc.

Sample Band 9 Answer

Throughout human history, playing musical instruments has generally been viewed as an important pastime that can have various benefits for the players and the listeners. However, some people believe that it is just a waste of time. This essay will look at both sides of this argument but strongly agree that playing music is beneficial.

There are various benefits to playing musical instruments. For one thing, music is a major cultural element and so playing it can help bring a person into a group, as well as uniting that group. When people hear music, they feel many different emotions and this can create bonds between them, so playing a musical instrument is highly important in such societies. It has also been demonstrated that playing a musical instrument can be relaxing, so it is useful for people to decompress after a difficult day by playing a song on their piano or guitar. In addition to this, music is a form of creativity, and so playing a musical instrument helps people to exercise their artistic side. This can have countless benefits for both the player and the listeners.

Some people believe that it is a waste of time to play an instrument. They tend to view it in the same way that people view computer games or other frivolous pastimes. Their argument simply says that this is little more than a hobby and thus there are other things to do in life that are more worthy of attention. For example, some strict parents believe that their child should not spend time learning the guitar because they will be unlikely to become professional in future; therefore, the child should concentrate his energies on more fruitful endeavours. However, this is a limited and unhelpful perspective that ignores the aforementioned benefits.

In conclusion, there is a split between people who think playing musical instruments is a waste of time and those who recognise that it has various benefits. Certainly, it seems that the relaxing, social, and creative rewards of music vastly outweigh any perceived negative attributes.

Sample Essay #2

Here is another question. This one is a bit more general than the first, and it relates to the issue we discussed before: music and age.

Some people say that music is a good way of bringing people of different cultures and ages together. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Music has been a part of human culture for many thousands of years. Some people say that it can bring different cultures and generations together, and this essay will agree with that view.

Music differs from culture to culture and it has changed a lot over the course of history, but it has always been a part of human identity. If a person from Japan travelled to the Amazon to meet an uncontacted tribe, or an aboriginal Australian went to visit an Inuit in Alaska, they would recognise the local music as music, even though they have never heard it before. Although they could not talk to each other, they would certainly recognise that the other one is playing music, and they could theoretically contribute to that. In this sense, music can act as an international language.

The shared passion for music is also something that brings people of different ages together. Although it is almost a cliché that generations have different musical tastes, there are certainly many cases of artists transcending those generational divides. People like Bob Dylan or the Rolling Stones have been beloved by several generations, and it is not uncommon to find parents and children listening to this music together. They can find some degree of common ground in music that perhaps they don’t find in other parts of the culture.

In conclusion, music is something that unites humanity, and although we all have different musical tastes, music is still recognised as a form of human expression, and people from different backgrounds and ages can still enjoy it together.

In neither of these essays did I need specialist music vocabulary. Instead, I used more general language and then applied it to music. I said things like “international language” and “transcending the generational divide,” which are specific to the topic but not exactly to music. However, they still relate closely to music.

Reading and Listening

It is possible that you could encounter the topic of music in either the listening or reading test, but it is hard to predict just how that could occur. In order to prepare, I recommend reading and listening to various news articles. This will help you learn new vocabulary and become familiar with the topic.

In the meantime, here is a short passage from an article about a band. Read it and then try to answer the following question.

As it has for most bands, 2020 has been a tough year for Elkins and band co-founder Vanessa Olivarez. In March, they survived the devastating Nashville tornado that struck near their homes. Then, the coronavirus pandemic shut down most live music. “It’s the first time in my life that I haven’t been able to do music for people,” Olivarez said. “But there still is the ability to create. I try to remember that, and that I still have the ability to record and make music. And we still have the opportunity to write these books and tell people’s stories. That’s a blessing in and of itself.”

How does Vanessa Olivarez sound?

Pessimistic

Although this is not a true IELTS-style question, it is asking you to infer meaning from her language, which is definitely an IELTS reading skill.

Many people believe that music helps in overcoming cultural differences and promotes unity among people of various age groups. In this essay, I will explain with examples why I completely agree with this popular opinion.

To begin with, it is the melody and the notes that make the soul of a song. Catchy tunes easily transcend cultural barriers and unite people of various nationalities through concerts, videos and social media. For example, the Music Across Borders concert organized in 2021 brought foreign artists to our living rooms and was watched by millions of viewers at the venues and via social media.

Musical compositions also bring people of different age groups together. Despite the rising popularity of flashy music videos, evergreen compositions with meaningful lyrics and soulful voice have caught the imagination of the old and young generations alike. A famous song by Kishore Kumar was re-launched very recently, making minor modifications to the recording quality and it inspired the youngsters to sing along with their parents and upload the videos to Youtube. This has reiterated the inherent ability of music to unite people of different age groups.

In conclusion, catchy tunes and international concerts help promote a sense of togetherness across cultural barriers while evergreen songs transcend generation gaps to unite people of all age groups, thus making music a boon for the mankind.

This is a model response to a Writing Task 2 topic from High Scorer’s Choice IELTS Practice Tests book series (reprinted with permission). This answer is likely to score IELTS Band 9.

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people believe that teaching music in schools is a vital part of growing up and the human experience, whilst others believe that teaching music in schools is a waste of time and resources.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

In modern day society, education has become a vital aspect of every child’s life. Educational facilities tend to offer a wide range of subjects aimed at educating children and teaching them various skills. Fundamental subject areas are said to be mathematics, science, languages and physical education. Whilst some have the ideology that musical education is an important part of growing up, others believe that it should no longer be taught in schools, as it is considered a waste of time and resources. In my view, it is important to incorporate music in children’s education as it promotes creativity.

Typically people judge that learning to express oneself in a creative manner is less important than learning about mathematical theories and scientific facts. Music falls under the subject area of art, causing it to often be considered as less valuable than other subjects. Often the opponents of musical education propose that a more rationally-based education will benefit children later on in their lives, as they will be able to perceive and comprehend the logical aspects of life more easily.

The supporters of musical education, on the other hand, argue that music is beneficial for children, because it offers a manner of creative self-expression. It is important for a child to learn about thinking creatively and to take a break from logical subjects once in a while. Furthermore, music is a salient part of human culture, as it brings people together and therefore children who study music can obtain a sense of cultural knowledge.

In conclusion, music should be taught at school, because it enables children to express themselves creatively and to learn more about culture and human interaction. I, personally, benefited from musical education, because I played piano for seven years and believe that this has helped me become a more balanced person.

I think this essay will only get 5.5 because of the off topic, grammatical errors, misuse of vocabs and lack in variety of grammatical structure.

These are some bold claims! I would love to see some substantiation – can you explain what grammatical errors and misuse of vocabulary you are referring to? Give any examples of lack of variety of grammatical structures? I would also appreciate an explanation on why you claim this essay is off-topic. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Essay of the Week: Modern or traditional music

Our band nine sample essays give you the opportunity to learn from successful essays that show off the best structure, vocabulary and grammar. This essay is a two-part question which asks about the importance of music, traditional music and international music.

There are many different types of music in the world today. Why do we need music? Is the traditional music of a country more important than the international music that is heard everywhere nowadays?

There is a diverse array of music in the modern world. This essay will explore the value of this music and what type of music people should listen to. It will, first, explore the importance of music as a way of expressing emotions. Second, it will argue that the increased cultural exchange in music helps people understand one another.

Music is meaningful to people because it is highly emotive. This means that people can use music to mirror their feelings. For example, if you are feeling upset, you can listen to sad songs and this might be cathartic for you. Although music can’t solve all people’s problems, it can show them that other people have felt the same way, both through lyrics and melody. Because music is a good way of showing emotion publicly, it can be useful for showing emotion in group settings, such as weddings or funerals.

While some people believe that people should prioritise music from their own country, I would argue that it is more important to prioritise international music to help promote intercultural understanding. Understanding other cultures is essential in a globalised world and listening to music from other cultures can help with that. For instance, because Korean pop music has become internationally famous, people have become increasingly interested in Korean culture. If people’s understanding of other cultures increases, it could lead to a less racist and a more harmonious world.

In conclusion, one reason music is valuable to people because it helps them communicate how they are feeling. Although some people would prefer people to focus on music from their own culture, I have argued that it is more advantageous to focus on international music.

Task 2 Samples

Some people think that parents should teach their children how to be good members of society. Others, however, believe that school is the best place to learn this. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Some people believe that children should be taught by their parents about how to function as useful members of society, while others believe that sending children to educational institutions is the best way for them to study this. Although the latter opinion can be beneficial in some cases, I believe that family upbringing plays a more important role in educating children to be good parts of the community.

Schools can be considered suitable places for children to learn to be good citizens. With standardized educational methods, schools can foster children’s cognitive development so that they are able to contribute to society in the future. For example, Trung Vuong school and Vinschool are well known for having nurtured successful alumni such as Professor Ngo Bao, Professor Nguyen Hung who have devoted their talents to the development of the country. However, these people only represent a small fraction of the total number of students attending schools, and thus sending children to schools cannot be the best method of educating them to be good members of society.

I believe that parents play a more important role in teaching them how to be good citizens. In Vietnam, the average class size is 20 students, which makes it difficult for educators to provide proper schooling for each student. One to one lessons at home, on the other hand, allow children to progress faster. Furthermore, parents form stronger bonds with their offspring and thus, it is easier for them to shape children’s personalities at an early age. For example, by telling stories such as Robin Hood, Cinderella before bedtime, parents can instil a sense of compassion and integrity into them. These children are likely to become good members of society when they grow up.

In conclusion, although sending children to schools can be seen as a way of teaching them how to be good citizens, I believe that domestic upbringing has a bigger impact on determining who they are in the future.

Furthermore, industrial pollution will negatively affect people’s health by precipitating respiratory diseases as well as some types of cancer. For example, Beijing, a big city in China, is facing smog which comes from manufacturing and incomplete combustion of logistic vehicles. This leads to an increase in the number of asthma-exacerbated patients.

To conclude, while prioritisng economic development will result in an increase in employment and a better quality of life, the serious downsides that come with this are environmental pollution and residents’ health issues.

Without ecological concerns, the air will be polluted from carbon dioxide and fumes which are emitted from these factories, and rivers will be polluted by industrial sewage from manufacturing and chemical processes. For example, Beijing, China, is facing a hazardous level of the air pollution caused by fuel burning and chemical reactions from industrial areas. As a clean environment is extremely vital for a human life, I therefore think that the main drawback outweighs its key benefit.

One of the primary reasons why we need music is its ability to evoke emotions and enhance our well-being. Music has a profound impact on our mood, relieving stress, and providing comfort and solace. It serves as a universal language that transcends barriers and allows individuals to connect with their inner selves and with others. Moreover, music serves as a means of cultural expression and promoting cultural identity.

The traditional music of a country carries the legacy of its people, their history, values, and customs. It serves as a cultural archive, reflecting the unique heritage of a nation and providing a sense of belonging to its citizens.

However, in today’s interconnected world, international music has become increasingly prevalent. It offers a platform for cross-cultural exchange and allows individuals to appreciate diverse musical styles and genres. International music fosters cultural understanding and promotes unity among people from different backgrounds. While traditional music holds cultural significance, it is important to recognize the value of international music in enriching our musical experiences. Global music collaborations and fusion of different styles can lead to the creation of innovative and captivating melodies that resonate with a wider audience.

In conclusion, music serves as a universal language that evokes emotions, promotes well-being, and fosters cultural expression. While traditional music is vital in preserving cultural heritage, international music has its own merits in promoting cross-cultural understanding and appreciation. Rather than viewing traditional and international music as mutually exclusive, it is essential to embrace both and celebrate the richness and diversity of musical expressions.

Model Answer 2: [Neutral opinion]

We love listening to music whether we are at home, at work or on the streets. In fact, music has become a part of our daily life whether it is traditional music or international music. Therefore it is fair to suggest that we need music because it is good for our souls, and it helps calm us down during the time of stress and anxiety besides conveying our human feeling from generation to generation. Because both “traditional music” and “international music” types enjoy a certain degree of popularity among music lovers, I am not hesitant to say that both of them are equally important for a country.

Traditional music, of course, can help understand the important elements of culture, heritage, history and the emotions of a particular country. But that does not necessarily mean that those particular “elements” always remain the same. They also go through some internal changes as time progresses, and simply because we, humans, are just not programmed to remain the same always. These changes are certainly reflected in “traditional music” as well, be it through a different kind of rhythm or a different kind of musical instrument. And, if these “changes” indeed are incorporated into the “traditional music”, they do not always remain “traditional”! Besides, who is to decide what is “traditional music” and which is ‘international music”, when many “not-so” traditional elements of international music are getting integrated into traditional music easily and rather “successfully” sometimes. For example, the “traditional tabla” (made of woods) in Bangladeshi folk songs is frequently being replaced by “metal made drums”, but it doesn’t exactly reduce the appeal and traditional value of that particular type of folklore songs in any manner.

Then, of course, there are satellite TV channels and the internet which have virtually erased the already “not-so” visible boundary line between traditional music and international music whereby we are continuously being “subject” to the music of other countries. Sometimes, we actually even like music from other countries. But in that case, it does not mean that our traditional music is becoming any less important to us.

To conclude, traditional music and international music are equally important for a country if it wants to preserve and also carry forward its traditions and cultures.

Music is an essential cultural and traditional component of a nation and a rich variety of music could be found all around the world that not only entertains us but also expresses our joy, nationalism, freedom, happiness, love and struggles in the finest form of arts. Despite the huge popularity of international music, traditional music is still more important due to its adherence to the traditional aspects of a country.

We need music because it makes our life meaningful and accompanies us throughout our lives. In our childhood, we listen to and learn music simply as a form of entertainment and joy. We learn to sing our national anthem and our parents sing to us to help us sleep. Later in life, we come across a variety of songs and music as part of our life stories and our favourite music often defines the person we become. In our old age, we see life and recite memories through music we love. Music both expresses and arouses emotions in a way that words alone cannot, and it tells stories of our lives that we long to hear. Thus we need music to relax, be entertained, be inspired, express our feelings and often relieve boredom in life.

In considering which kind of music is the most important, we must acknowledge that traditional music teaches people about their history and helps people remember and retain their national and cultural identity. International music is often set in a totally different environment that we have no experience in and despite engaging and entertaining lyrics and music style, it is often a commercial product which fails to reflect the true stories in our life. Traditional music, by contrast, expresses the culture, tradition and history of a country and gives narratives of people and their life in a way that will be always relevant. Thus traditional music, without any doubt, is more important for us as people in a society and a country.

In conclusion, music is a crucial part of our life and existence, and I believe that traditional music should be given more importance than international music so that we can enjoy music not only for entertainment’s sake but also to learn who we really are.

In this day and age, different kinds of music genres prevail around the globe and one can find a stunning range of categories and styles according to his choice. No doubt, music is of critical importance to us for several reasons and despite conventional music nurturing nationalism, I unswervingly believe that global music is highly significant by reason of diversity.

No matter when, where and how music was invented, it has been playing a vital role in our society for a really long. Music can touch our feelings and even change them by soothing the nerves and many researchers suggest that music can invoke catharsis feelings in the listeners who have emotional stress and tension. In addition to this, music can reach the core of our minds and inspire us greatly. That is why, in nursing homes, they commence with musical therapy so as to let the old people remember the incidents of their sweet past.

International music is of considerable importance despite the fact that folk music resonates with the culture, heritage and legacy of a nation. There are myriad reasons in favour of international music. The most prominent one is solidarity. In simple words, world music brings together a diverse range of cultures and histories and thereby demonstrates different paradigms of notions, worldviews and so forth; which in turn transcend cultural differences and tear down the barriers of social class, ethnicity, national identity and so on. A case in point is the song “Wind of Change” by Scorpions, which is a rallying cry for unification and for freedom and a message of hope.

On a final note, traditional music is a strong carrier of the culture, history, and heritage of a nation. Nevertheless, global music paves the way for international unity which is crucial as the world we live in has become a global village.

For example, a range of Indian communities, which nowadays exist all around the globe, still listen to their own traditional music, and it allows them to maintain and successfully translate various national traditions to the next generation who was born and grew up abroad, away from their homeland.

In conclusion, music is a necessary element of our life that supports and cures our emotional states. The significance of traditional music might be seen in its ability to save and translate cultural traditions among generations.

Why Do People Make Music?

In a new study, researchers found universal features of songs across many cultures, suggesting that music evolved in our distant ancestors.

Music baffled Charles Darwin. Mankind’s ability to produce and enjoy melodies, he wrote in 1874, “must be ranked amongst the most mysterious with which he is endowed.”

All human societies made music, and yet, for Darwin, it seemed to offer no advantage to our survival. He speculated that music evolved as a way to win over potential mates. Our “half-human ancestors,” as he called them, “aroused each other’s ardent passions during their courtship and rivalry.”

Other Victorian scientists were skeptical. William James brushed off Darwin’s idea, arguing that music is simply a byproduct of how our minds work — a “mere incidental peculiarity of the nervous system.”

That debate continues to this day. Some researchers are developing new evolutionary explanations for music. Others maintain that music is a cultural invention, like writing, that did not need natural selection to come into existence.

In recent years, scientists have investigated these ideas with big data. They have analyzed the acoustic properties of thousands of songs recorded in dozens of cultures. On Wednesday, a team of 75 researchers published a more personal investigation of music . For the study, all of the researchers sang songs from their own cultures.

The team, which comprised musicologists, psychologists, linguists, evolutionary biologists and professional musicians, recorded songs in 55 languages, including Arabic, Balinese, Basque, Cherokee, Maori, Ukrainian and Yoruba. Across cultures, the researchers found, songs share certain features not found in speech, suggesting that Darwin might have been right: Despite its diversity today, music might have evolved in our distant ancestors.

“It shows us that there may be really something that is universal to all humans that cannot simply be explained by culture,” said Daniela Sammler, a neuroscientist at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt who was not involved in the study.

Databases of songs collected by ethnomusicologists sometimes lack important details. It can also be hard for researchers to make sense of the structure and lyrics of songs from other cultures. Computers, likewise, are not very good at recognizing many features of music.

“We thought we should involve the insiders,” said Yuto Ozaki, who earned his doctorate at Keio University in Japan by helping to lead the project.

Dr. Ozaki’s colleague, Patrick Savage, took on the job of recruiting the singers. “It was a combination of the network I’d already built up through the first decade of my career along with going to conferences and making small talk and meeting people,” said Dr. Savage, now a musicologist at the University of Auckland.

All of the team members picked traditional songs from their cultures to record.

In addition to singing, they recited the lyrics of the songs without a melody so that the team could later compare the music and speech. And for a further point of comparison, the researchers played their songs on a wide range of instruments, including sitars and melodicas.

In each recording, the researchers measured six features, such as pitch and tempo. Despite their variety, all of the songs shared a number of features that set them apart from speech. The pitch was higher and more stable, for example, and the tempo was slower.

Dr. Sammler cautioned that the singers in the new study were mostly academics, and that the songs they chose might have introduced some bias into the research. “It’s essentially academics singing material that may not be representative,” she said.

But she also noted that another study , not yet published in a scientific journal, came to a similar conclusion. In that study, researchers analyzed songs from 18 languages and pinpointed many of the same features.

It’s possible that songs have distinct features because they have a special role in human communication separate from speech, said Aniruddh Patel, a psychologist at Tufts University who was not involved in the study. What’s more, our brains appear to be sensitive to those features. In 2022, Dr. Patel pointed out, researchers discovered human neurons that only responded to singing — not speech or music played on instruments.

“There is something distinctive about song all around the world as an acoustic signal that perhaps our brains have become attuned to over evolutionary time,” Dr. Patel said.

What sort of evolutionary benefit would come from that signal is still a matter of debate.

“Maybe music was needed to improve group cohesion,” Dr. Ozaki said. Singing in choruses, sharing rhythms and melodies, could have brought people together whether as a community or in preparation for a battle.

But Dr. Sammler didn’t think that the new study ruled out other roles for music, such as helping parents bond with their children . “It could support a lot of theories,” she said.
