With increasing populations and ever growing urban centers, many countries are losing their natural beauty spots. What benefits are there to protecting places of natural beauty? How can this be solved?

IELTS says that you should write a minimum of 250 words in writing task 2. If you go under word count you will lose marks in task response.

A very long essay will not give you a higher band score.

Aim for between 260 to 290 words in writing task 2. This will ensure a concise essay and will be realistic in terms of time management. You have only 40 minutes to write the essay and you need around 10 minutes of planning time, so you will not be able to write a long essay in 30 minutes.

Your Guide to IELTS Band 7

IELTS Model Essay: Environmental Problems

In this post, I’m going to write an IELTS Writing Task 2 model essay in response to this question about environmental problems from  Cambridge 14 (Academic) :

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own  knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

First of all, I’ll take you through my 4 Step Approach to essay planning :

• Analyse The Question
• Decide My Position
• Generate My Ideas
• Develop My Ideas

Step 1: Analyse The Question

The first thing to do is analyse the question. One way of doing this is to ( VERY carefully ) simplify the question. In this question, I think  the simplified question is this:

What is the most important environmental problem?  Is it species loss…or something else?

We can also simplify the 2 views:

View 1: species loss is the main environmental problem.

View 2: there are “more important” ones.

What might these “more important” environmental problems be? Global warming comes to my mind.

Step 2: Decide My Position

So, what do I REALLY think about this issue? In other words, what’s my position on this issue?

I think species loss is a major problem, but I think global warming is the more important one. However, I think the two problems are linked: my understanding is that global warming will lead to species loss anyway; if global warming causes species loss, it makes sense that global warming is the bigger problem.

Step 3: Generate My Ideas

Next, I need to generate some ideas for this essay .

I must also remember that the question is asking about environmental PROBLEMS, not solutions.

View 1: species loss is main environmental problem.

Well, I agree it’s important. Why do I think this?

• important to protect species – we share the world – moral obligation
• also loss of species affects humans (e.g. affects food chain, loss of fish in seas means less food for us)

View 2: there are “more important” problems.

I think global warming is a more important problem. Why do I think this?

• danger that global warming will escalate and lead to runaway warming
• ultimately this will lead to species loss anyway

Step 4: Develop My Ideas

Next, I’m going to develop my ideas using a logical structure . This will give me a clear essay plan.

Introduction :

• species loss a major concern, but is it main one?

Body Paragraph 1 

• Main Idea: moral obligation to protect species
• Explanation: loss of species is permanent, future generations
• Example: dodo

Body Paragraph 2

• Main Idea: loss of species affects humans
• Explanation: food and drugs

Body Paragraph 3

• Main Idea: global warming is more important
• Explanation: runaway heating will lead to more problems, including species loss
• Example: polar bears
• both are important, but global warming will cause species loss, so  it’s the most important problem.

I decided to write 2 separate paragraphs in my discussion of the first idea – it seems more logical to do this.

So, all I need to do now is expand these notes into full sentences and link them together ! While I write, I must, at all times, remember my position: species loss is an important problem, but global warming is even more important, and they are also linked.

So here’s my essay:

My Model Essay

The loss of natural habitats, in part due to intensive agriculture and industrial-scale mining in some parts of the world, as well as urbanisation, has put the survival of many species of plants and animals under threat. While this is certainly a major concern, is this the most pressing environmental problem that we should deal with?

I certainly feel that humanity has a moral obligation to safeguard the survival of different species of fauna and flora. The loss of any species is permanent and means that future generations will not be able to appreciate the wonders of a diverse natural world. For example, the tragic extinction of the dodo is something which we still lament even today.

Moreover, it can affect us detrimentally too. Many herbal remedies are derived from plants, and so the destruction of rainforests could easily have a negative effect on the production of medicinal drugs. In addition, we are part of a natural food chain, so the loss of animals, such as fish, means we will have less food in the future.

Ultimately though, there is a far wider problem that needs to be addressed: global warming. As a result of emissions of greenhouse gases, such as CO2 and methane, global temperatures are rising and we risk seeing runaway heating. This will lead to a number of problems, including flooding, extreme weather and drought, but also the extinction of species. Indeed, polar bears are already struggling to survive because of the loss of polar ice caps due to rising temperatures.

In other words, working to safeguard the survival of the natural world without tackling global warming would be entirely ineffective, so it’s not really a case of which one is more important: all environmental issues are ultimately interconnected, and so we need to take a holistic approach to the issue.

My Comments

Task response: had I just argued that global warming was more important than species loss, it would be good enough for a Band 7 or 8 for TR, but I went further: I argued that both problems are important, and that they are linked. It’s a more developed position, and I think worthy of a Band 9. But explaining this position requires some advanced language, so it’s tricky for many students to do well.

Vocabulary : I desperately wanted to use the phrase “flora and fauna” somewhere! (If you don’t know it, fauna = animals, flora = flowers. There’s also a lot of natural collocation in this essay, and these phrases have precise meaning:

• intensive agriculture
• industrial-scale mining
• under threat
• the most pressing environmental problem
• has a moral obligation to
• herbal remedies

There’s some repetition of words: loss, survival and species are repeated, but this is not a problem. I’ve tried to paraphrase where appropriate (e.g. “natural world” instead of “species”).

Overall, the essay uses “natural and sophisticated control” of vocabulary, with no errors (as far as I can tell!) so it’s at a Band 9 level.

Where is conclusion ? I think conclusion is mandatory to complete the essay without sum up or conclusion it will affect on overall band score, from task achievement no one can get good band score.

The conclusion is in the final paragraph, which starts “in other words”. It probably would be clearer if I’d started it “in conclusion”, but I used a different discourse marker to improve the flow of the essay.

Sample Essay 1

In today’s world, environmental degradation is an issue that impacts every organism on planet earth and is one of the biggest challenges being faced by humans. While it is generally opined that it is our responsibility to ensure that the environment is preserved and protected for the future generations, there are a few who argue against this opinion.

Those who oppose it being the responsibility of present generation to ensure environmental protection assert that the existing predicament is a result of many generations playing fast and loose with the environment and so, why should one generation be weighed down with this mammoth task .

However, taking this stand reeks of shirking responsibility . The fact remains that we have inherited a planet which is battling perilous environmental issues such as climate change. As many studies have shown, this is high time that steps are taken to, first, stop the degradation and then, reverse it too. The grave responsibility falls on the humans inhabiting the earth today as it has the scientific knowledge that their antecedents did not have, to understand the gravity of the current environmental situation and fight it. Moreover, one of the reasons for the ruin of environment is the consumer culture and materialistic mentality that have become an integral part of modern lifestyle. These, along with harming the environment, have also resulted in stress and dissatisfaction for people. Hence, reversing this way of living will serve the dual purpose of ensuring ecological balance and individual happiness.

I strongly believe that not only should we conserve the environment for future humans but we should also do so for all the flora and fauna of the world. The planet earth is ours for the duration we are on it both to enjoy it and to safeguard it; therefore, sustainable development needs to be the motto of one and all.

Deforestation, urbanization, and illegal hunting have relentlessly pushed numerous animal species towards endangerment and even extinction. This essay contends that safeguarding these species is not merely important but imperative. It will examine both the ecological impacts of extinction and the ethical responsibilities towards biodiversity conservation.

Firstly, the ecological ramifications of species loss are profound and far-reaching. Every species plays a unique role in its ecosystem, contributing to a complex web of interdependencies known as biodiversity. For instance, the extinction of a single pollinator species can lead to the collapse of plant populations that rely exclusively on that pollinator, which in turn affects species that depend on those plants for food and shelter. This domino effect can lead to ecological collapse, disrupting services ecosystems provide, like clean air, water purification, and climate regulation. The reintroduction of wolves in Yellowstone National Park, USA, which helped stabilize other animal populations and rejuvenate the park’s ecosystem, exemplifies the positive impact of preserving biodiversity.

Secondly, there exists an ethical imperative to protect animal species. Beyond ecological benefits, humans have a moral duty to ensure the survival of other species with whom we share the planet. This duty arises from the recognition that animals possess intrinsic value and rights, independent of their utility to humans. Moreover, many of the threats to wildlife—such as habitat destruction and overhunting—are the direct result of human activities. Thus, it is incumbent upon us to rectify the harm we have caused. Initiatives like the establishment of wildlife corridors in India, which allow safe passage for tigers and other species between isolated reserves, demonstrate effective measures for mitigating human impact on wildlife.

In conclusion, the protection of endangered species is both an ecological necessity and a moral obligation. Through actions such as ecosystem restoration and the creation of wildlife corridors, we can address the adverse effects of human activity on wildlife, thereby preserving the natural heritage for future generations.

Sample Essay 2

Deforestation, urban sprawl, and illegal poaching are increasingly threatening the survival of many animal species, propelling them towards extinction. This essay argues that animal protection is essential and will discuss the benefits of biodiversity and the effectiveness of conservation laws.

The first point to consider is the inherent value of biodiversity, which offers significant environmental and economic benefits. Diverse ecosystems are more resilient; they recover from disruptions such as natural disasters more quickly and are better at regulating disease, which benefits agricultural communities by ensuring healthy pollination and pest control. These ecological services are indispensable as they help maintain environmental balance and ensure sustainability of food sources. Economically, biodiversity is pivotal for sectors like ecotourism and pharmaceuticals, which rely on a variety of species to attract tourists and discover new medicines, respectively. Moreover, implementing strict conservation laws has proven to be an effective strategy for wildlife protection. Countries that have enforced comprehensive anti-poaching regulations and established protected areas have seen significant recoveries in wildlife populations. This approach not only prevents the immediate threats like poaching and habitat loss but also reinforces the ecological balance and biodiversity. Nepal, for instance, celebrated zero rhino poachings in several years due to stringent laws and community conservation efforts. These laws not only curb immediate threats but also foster a culture of wildlife value and conservation, ensuring long-term commitment to animal protection. The involvement of local communities in these efforts has been crucial, as it empowers them and provides economic benefits, further solidifying the support for wildlife conservation initiatives. Environment is calling our name worldwide, especially with the frequent occurrence of natural disasters from tsunami to earthquakes. That is the acknowledged threat to the survival of humankind, but the truth remains that people seem to be busy with something else, rather than the mission of salvaging the world before it is too late. Reasons for people’s blatant ignorance of this fact are various, subjectively and objectively.

Governments are partly to be condemned  for their lack of serious effort and radical law enforcement on environment protection. The fact is people around the globe are still releasing a huge amount of waste, without being heavily penalized or get away with this, perhaps by simply lobbying government or bribing some key figures in the authorities. Also, despite the fact that authorities are urging people into using environment-friendly products and campaigns to keep the environment clean, ironically, they are, simultaneously , allowing businessmen to produce as many cars as possible and advertisers to spur consumerism among people, which is undeniably the catalyst for the booming of air pollution and early exhaustion of natural resources.

Objectively, economic imbalance between nations is another culprit of people’s little attention to save the environment. While some nations pass their economic heights, being willing to voice their protests against any action dirtying the environment, others are too hectic with the prodding call of poverty and illiteracy of citizens and find themselves at variance with priorities of developed world. In this case, any attempt to slow down the development of the latter proves paradoxical , and for that reason, our environment stays fully exploited. The painful truth is that the inherent basic instinct of people, after all, is to feed themselves as much as possible, taking the precedence over doing something for long-term purpose, say, environmental conservation.

Solutions to this head-aching issue are suggested. Drastic measures implemented by governments to minimize pollution are the prohibition of natural exploitation above the limit, discouragement of private means of transportation, and establishment of international treaties , for instance, Kyoto. Nevertheless, this means no worth if each citizen, himself or herself, pays no heed . Long-term remedies , educational programs to raise people’s awareness of environment protection are strongly recommended. It would be such an effective method to inculcate in our little children the immediate consequences of environmental damage, by introducing the environment protection as the mandatory subject at school and frequently showing videos of environment hazards on television everywhere.

I strongly believe that once these threats caused environment degradation are deeply embedded in our minds, especially, children’s, our environment will soon be away from jeopardy and our world will be green again.

The focus of human civilisation has shifted from nurturing our natural habitat to exploiting it for personal gains. The dependence on natural resources has become so intensive that we have overused them to the point of extinction. Moreover, if the already atrocious environmental conditions are not improved, the survival of our species will be at risk. In the following paragraphs, I will address the prime causes for this negligence towards our environment and suggest possible solutions to this issue.

The roots of this tendency to capitalize on the natural world without any regard for the long-term repercussions that mankind has adopted over the last few decades are varied in nature. One of the chief ideals that are highly prevalent in the present society that perpetrate these actions is capitalism. The surge in demand for better food, clothing, materials and general standard of living has boosted global economic activity to such a degree that preserving the limited resources available to humanity has taken a second place to consumerism.

Nevertheless, there are still avenues available to save and protect our ecosystem before it is dilapidated beyond repair. First and foremost, measures have to be taken to bring about a general awareness among the people about the appalling environmental circumstances that we are suffering from in this day and age. Furthermore, governments of nations worldwide have to tighten the administration and impose more stringent environmental laws so that the generation and disposal of waste are checked properly.

To sum up, the grave and deteriorating condition of the environment is known to all of human civilisation. Presently, the burden on nature is so great that issues like climate change and the degrading quality of elements like air and water are more significant than ever before. It is necessary to take corrective actions immediately to curb the further decline of the living world.

Some people say that protecting the environment is the government’s responsibility. Others believe that every individual should be responsible for it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

People hold different views about whether the government should shoulder the responsibility of preserving the environment or each person responsible . From my standpoint, it more beneficial if both the country’s authorities and individuals the responsibility.

On the one hand, the government may play a pivotal role in maintaining the environment safe and healthy. It is that should introduce the legislation in order to mitigate environmental problems, such as air pollution and more. To illustrate, there should be some laws encouraging factories to move to the rather than staying in cities. This could help urban areas to be further protected from the poisonous fumes, which . Another prominent role the government could play would be creating TV programs to educate citizens, and to persuade them to more. Being informed of the consequences of their activities, individuals may endeavor to alter their ways, to avoid harming the environment.

On the other hand, it is undeniable that each person can play an important role in protecting their own neighborhood. Cars are considered to be a major source of air pollution. Their exhaust gases contaminate the air, ranging from carbon dioxide to unburnt carbon. Therefore, by using their own vehicles only in rare cases, people would be able to protect the environment. Another opportunity available to individuals is recycling. By stopping plastic waste from entering and contaminating waterways people are able to conserve drinkable water and its inhabitants.

In conclusion, due to the large amount of work involved, mobilising all the possible forces is a more sensible approach. It is, therefore, likely that joint efforts of both the governments and their citizens would result in the most effective way of preserving the environment.

The author of this essay has done a good job covering the task topic. He/she used one body paragraph to discuss whether the government should be responsible for protecting the environment, and the other body paragraph – to discuss whether individuals should be protecting the environment, and how. The ideas are logically sequenced and connected using linking words, making this essay easy to read. Some inaccuracy of expression is evident and requires more work and attention (see corrections underlined in blue). The range of vocabulary is impressive and grammatical errors are quite rare. Overall this essay seems worthy of IELTS Band 7.

Hence,its demerits are arduous to overcome by its merits.

On the positive side,they are essential to plummet the economic disperity and enhance standard of living for the citizens.First and the foremost is the boost up in the vocations,with escalation in the sharemarket more products are needed to be created since,count of workers will jump upwards which provides employment to the middle and lower classes of the community. The money will flow from the wealthy to the poor thus,aidful to diminish the financial juxtaposition among the masses.To take a case with the establishment of tata steel in Jamsedhpur of india around 55% individuals from the jarkhand got jobs in the steel market.Paradoxically,with new facilities and advanced equipements, the fundamental needs are fullfilled in a facile manner as, medical amenities are feasible at every nook and corner even of the developing nations.

Althought the aforementiond points are paramount but the perilous affects are undeniable as it genrates environmental,physical and mental hazards.It is acknowledged that latest consumer goods are deterimental for the physical health. For instance,the latest mobile phone network based upon LTE is genrating jiopardise to the neurons of human blood cells whereas more and more trees and other natural fossil fuels are squandered to overcome these demands thus, the atmosphere is endangered too.Ironaically,to show a zenith status in the community,persons keeps on thinking to buy new things on regular bases thus, it hurts them mentally.According to a recent survey by world health organisation in the contemporary time almost 35% of patients in the mental disorder are just because they always opine about new ideas to be at the top of others.

To summarise,it is helpful in some manner albeit, its cons are really rigorous to outcome.However, high standards will have no benefit without a fit body therefore its is a negative advancement for the world.

Some people say that the only reason for /earning a foreign language Is In order to travel to or work in a foreign country. Others say that these are not the only reasons why someone should learn a foreign language. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

The importance of learning a foreign language is going more and more noticeable. However, when asked about the reasons for learning a second language, different people come up with different reasons. while some individuals agree solely on immigration purposes, some people challenge those intentions. This essay will discuss both views and then will address my opinion.

When it comes to learning a new language, some people may limit it to immigrating and living abroad. In other words, they drag their feet on learning second languages only to find a reason to leave their homeland. They might be logically naïve, but for them learning a second language does not serve internal purposes when they are able to communicate well without a hitch. Therefore, learning a second language in other contexts becomes less important

On the other hand, there comes the opposing group that believes the second language acquisition is multilateral and should not be postponed for a rainy day. The use of the second language is going widespread through technology and we should utilize the foreign language to better keep abreast of recent information, they say. For example, using smartphones and internet demand picking up a new language accordingly. Thus, new languages should be learned any way to either communicate or to use technologies.

Considering the reasons above, people who think they should learn a foreign language only for living abroad or the latter group who believes otherwise, I agree with the latter. Acquiring a second language is beyond travelling or working overseas and should be used in any circumstances.

Advanced vocab is used but there is no grammatical range. So, the sentences look unatural which makes it a Band 6 writing.

Environment problems are threatening the very existence of life on this planet. Some people feel that environment protection is the responsibility of politicians. I don’t agree with this view. In my opinion, individuals and politicians need to make a joint effort to save the planet.

There is a limit to what an individual or a politician can achieve on his own. Politicians can frame laws to protect the environment. ‘Green’ laws are the need of the hour. Environment protection laws can stop factories from polluting the rivers and seas. They can stop deforestation. They can also prevent mindless quarrying and the destruction of natural resources. Even so, there is a limit to what we can accomplish through legislation.

To conclude, everyone has a responsibility to save the planet they inhabit. Political will can achieve a lot. Individuals need to make their contributions too.
