My Neighbour Essay

A Neighbour is the family or people living near our house. They may live immediately beside us or maybe a little away. They play an essential role in our lives. Having a good neighbour is always beneficial as it keeps the living surroundings very positive. Here are a few sample essays on the topic ‘My Neighbour’.

100 Words Essay On My Neighbour

200 words essay on my neighbour, 500 words essay on my neighbour, my experience, our bonding.

My Neighbour Essay

My neighbour consists of a family of 10 people. It is a joint family. The family consists of grandparents, two couples and four children. They are very well off, and both the brothers run the same family business. Three out of four children study in my school, whereas one is a toddler. The family is very helpful and is always cheerful. Their grandparents go for morning and evening walks with my grandparents. I play with their children every day in the evening. Many times we come back home together. Sometimes my mother picks us back from school, and sometimes their mother does the same. They always participate in our family functions as we do in theirs. They are really helpful neighbors and a blessing in our lives.

It is always good to have a good neighbour because they are the first people who you go to whenever you are too happy or sometimes in need of something. Our next-door neighbours are the Tanejas, whose family consists of grandparents, parents and two children. The grandparents are retired medical professionals, whereas the parents, i.e. the son and the daughter-in-law, are successful entrepreneurs. They are very kind and generous. They never show off their wealth. Whenever they are available, they call us for tea and coffee get-togethers, and whenever we get a chance, we invite them for snack parties and get-togethers.

I remember how difficult the times were when the pandemic hit the world in 2020. Their family helped us a lot with our medical needs. I was also suffering from symptoms of COVID, so they consoled my parents and helped them in the best possible way they could and prescribed me medications. Instead of creating chaos they helped me during quarantine, supplied me with necessary medicines and arranged an oxygen cylinder beforehand so that it could be used wherever it was required, as I had breathing problems for three days. I am thankful to God for blessing us with such wonderful neighbours.

A good neighbour is a found treasure. Neighbours are the ones who share our joys and sorrows, making our lives easier. When we have a good relationship with our neighbours, they are the first to stand by us in need. A good neighbour will always be ready to help you anytime and in any situation. It is always a boon to have a good neighbour.

Sharma stays to the left of our house. They are kind and sweet people. It took a little time to get connected to them at first, but with time we got attached to them. They are a small happy family of six members. Every single member of the family is very sweet. It's been almost seven years since we moved here. Since then, we have celebrated all the festivals together and enjoyed every occasion. The grandma next door always sends me homemade ladoos, and the kids, Sonu and Dolly are absolute sweethearts, and they love playing with our pets every time they come home. Sharma uncle is really a very good person. He is a professor at the University, and aunty is an excellent cook. She is a homemaker.

My mom and sharma aunty love to share their cooking recipes and delicious dishes. I really like her palak paneer and naan, and she never forgets to send it to me whenever she cooks it. They really help us every time we need them. Once my grandpa broke his spectacle, he was home alone; I was too small at the time to help him. He called Sharma uncle for help, and he immediately helped my grandfather to get it fixed. Their grandma next door is a very sweet and cheerful lady. I have hardly ever seen such an amazing personality at the age of 85. She, too, is a retired University professor. I always have a great time talking to her. She shares her personal life experiences from her college days. Also, she shares about the real-life struggles a person faces when they pass out of school and then college. She helps a lot in my mathematics lessons. She teaches many things to my mother, too, as if she is her own daughter. She taught my mother to make pickles and jams and also taught her preservation techniques. She treats my grandmother like her daughter, and most of the time, they are found talking and going for walks together. Both of them are very fond of Bhajans, and they go to the nearby temple with their friends.

We have been celebrating almost all the festivals together. We both invite each other to birthdays, anniversaries and on various other occasions. The best part about our neighbours is they are not at all jealous or intrusive about our matters. It isn't easy to get good neighbours today as some are really curious about your household, whereas some are not even interested in helping you with your needs. Anyone can buy a good house, but a good neighbour is priceless.

5 tips on being a kinder neighbor and fostering a sense of community

Illustration of colorful row houses lining the street, larger than life hand drawn people pop out of the top performing various helpful and neighborly tasks like watering plants, walking dogs, painting the houses, and sharing coffee. Smaller figures take care of the neighborhood on the street below.

Do you know your neighbors? Like really know them? Their first names, the types of cars they drive, what holidays they celebrate? If you ever get locked out of your house, could you go to your neighbor's to grab a spare key?

According to a 2018 Pew Research study , roughly a quarter of adults under 30 report that they don't know any of their neighbors.

But there's a sense of comfort and safety that can come with knowing them — and building a safe and caring community is a valuable way to stay connected to the place you live.

Learning how to be a kind neighbor is a skill that's good to learn at a young age, and Chris Loggins knows all about that. He's the supervising producer of the animated children's show Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood from Fred Rogers Productions. "The show is for two to four year olds and it is directly inspired by Mister Rogers' Neighborhood ," he says.

"In each episode, there's a strategy song. Each of them has a catchy tune and easy-to-remember lyrics that help kids develop important social and emotional skills."

We spoke with Loggins and other community building experts about ways we can strive to be kinder, more caring neighbors. While many of these tips are for young people, they are also applicable to the parents and adults in the room.

Get to know your neighbors

It may seem obvious, but getting to know your neighbors is the first step to becoming a kind neighbor. Get out of your comfort zone and make an effort to learn their names and what they do for work. And if you feel comfortable, let them know that you're there to help, if they ever need another hand.

Loggins shares that after a recent move, his new neighbors helped him and his family feel welcome by making sure that his family had things set up. He emphasizes that it doesn't take a lot of money or a grand gesture to be an active neighbor. "You don't have to show up with a fresh apple pie or anything like that," he says. It's truly as simple as saying hello, introducing yourself and asking an open-ended question.

Make small kind gestures a daily practice

Another way to take care of your neighborhood, and to show your neighbors that you care, is by making small acts of kindness a daily practice. This can be cleaning up litter or even cleaning up after the pets on your block.

Use the skills and resources available to you — maybe you aren't a baker, but you have an amazing garden. You can ask your partner or kids to help you pick flowers from your garden to give your new neighbor a bouquet. Remember, every small gesture counts.

Remind yourself that being connected feels good

It can feel so easy to just go home, close your door and turn on the TV without having to make small talk, but connecting with others is worth the effort. As nerve-wracking as it is, reaching out to new people can actually boost your mood in the long run. According to an article by Emma Seppälä , "social connectedness ... generates a positive feedback loop of social, emotional and physical well-being."

How to make friends? Accept the awkwardness

Accept The Awkwardness: How To Make Friends (And Keep Them)

And if you take the first step, your small acts of kindness can encourage others to pay that kindness forward — making even more people feel good.

Marta Zaraska , who is the author of Growing Young: How Friendship, Optimism and Kindness Can Help You Live to 100 , shares that once in 2013, "there was an instance in Winnipeg at a local Tim Hortons, where one driver decided to pay for the meal or the coffee of the driver behind him at the drive-thru. And that driver was so grateful, he decided to pay for the driver behind him." According to reports on this incident, the chain of kindness went on for more than 200 drivers!

Meet and engage with different people

Encouraging your kids to get out there and engage with your neighbors is important, but it isn't always easy to balance this with conversations on safety and the so-called stranger danger. Like every parent, Zach Norris , who's the executive director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in Oakland, Calif., had to work on this with his daughters.

"We need to call into consciousness that this idea of the so-called bad guy and the way in which the so-called bad guy has been leveraged in ways that actually make us less safe," he says. "Most often, harm is done by people that we know. And that includes for children who are some of the most vulnerable folks in our society."

Being told you can't trust the people around you doesn't exactly inspire community, and children pick up on that. One way to combat this stranger danger outlook, he says, is by reaching out of your comfort zone and engaging with different people in your neighborhood alongside your kids.

Norris, for instance, takes his daughters to events where they hear from "amazing leaders who are incredible and empathetic, and also who are formerly incarcerated, who have committed some acts that may have caused harm, that they have made amends for. And I think those are some of the experiences that we expose them to that I think helped them to understand safety in a more dynamic way," he says.

Check your implicit bias

Looking out for your neighbors is an important part of being in a community. But before you go all "neighborhood watch" on someone, if something is making you feel unsafe, Norris suggests you take a deeper look at the power dynamics at play: Why do you feel like someone doesn't "fit in" your neighborhood? Why are you inclined to call the police on someone?

What to say to kids when the news is scary

Parenting: Difficult Conversations

What to say to kids when the news is scary.

Talking Race With Young Children

Talking Race With Young Children

Remember to check your bias, and ask yourself why you feel uncomfortable and unsafe, rather than putting the blame on your neighbors.

When asked what someone should do before calling the police on someone in their neighborhood, Norris advises asking themselves whether another person is being "actively harmed."

Getting to know your neighbors and taking care of your community are valuable ways to feel safer in your neighborhood. Actions speak louder than words, and your attitudes towards marginalized and vulnerable people also set an example for your kids. So be mindful of the different people in your community and actively remind yourself to treat everyone with respect and care.

Short Essay on My Neighbour (200 Words) – Essay 1

It feels safe, secure and pleasant living in a neighbourhood surrounded by helpful and positive people. The family living in my neighbourhood is full of life. There are six members in their family – grandparents, parents, and two kids. Every member is cheerful and helpful. We have been living in the same neighbourhood for almost a decade and our neighbours have become an important part of our life.

There have been several incidents during these years where they have proved to be of great help and support. I remember the day I was alone at home with my grandmother. My grandmother was doing some household work when her ankle twisted and she fell on the floor. She was unable to get up on her own. I was just seven years old at that time and could not help her stand. I was almost in tears.

I called my neighbours and they immediately came for help. I was really thankful to them. This is just one incident. There have been numerous such incidents wherein they have helped us. Our family also supports them whenever they need any help. Last year, when their house was getting renovated, we invited them to stay with us for a few days.

We have seen various highs and lows in life together and hope our bond stays intact for years to come.

Essay on My Neighbour (300 Words) – Essay 2

My neighbour is the best neighbour.

Introduction

We live in a nuclear family. My father works in an IT firm and my mother is a teacher. I do not have any siblings nor do we have any relatives in the city. We visit my grandparents and cousins only during the summer vacation.

I felt quite lonely when we shifted here initially. However, I soon met Meera, my new neighbour. I was overjoyed to know that she was the same age as me. We were both eight at that time. I got along well with her from the very beginning. We connected very well and I started feeling really better. I was no longer lonely or sad.

Our Bond with our New Neighbour

Just like I became friends with Meera, my mother got along well with her mother. Meera’s mother is a housewife. My mother and she often have evening tea together. We look forward to such days as it allows us to play at each other’s place. We get a chance to play with different toys and games.

On other days, we go together to the park. We play different outdoor games, take swings and enjoy a lot. We also joined the same summer camp during our last vacation. The camp was for three hours daily during the weekdays. We indulged in many activities such as art and craft, dance, music and board games during this time.

Both of us enjoy art and craft work. We prepared many craft items together even after we returned from the summer camp. During the vacations every year, we also visit the malls together. It has been three years since we have been neighbours and it has been a lot of fun.

I am really thankful to God for giving me such a good neighbour. Meera is simply the best. Her family is also very friendly. I am glad that our mothers are also friends with each other.

Essay on My Neighbour (400 Words) – Essay 3

Importance of a good neighbour.

Our neighbours are one of the first people we can approach during an emergency situation. Those who have good neighbours live with a feeling of security. On the other hand, those who do not connect well with their neighbours can have a hard time during their hour of need.

We Need Good Neighbour

Here is why we need good neighbours:

  • Good neighbours support us during crisis. They are there to help us in case any kind of problem arises.
  • They are warm and friendly so we can confide in them in case anything bothers us. It is a good way to lower our stress and burden.
  • They fill the neighbourhood with positivity and make it a better place to live.
  • A neighbourhood surrounded by good neighbours is safe for the kids.
  • Elderly people are treated well and do not feel lonely if they have good neighbours.
  • Good neighbours are always there for each other. They are sensitive to the needs of one another.
  • Good neighbours celebrate festivals and other special occasions together. The joy doubles when people celebrate such special days together.
  • Children who grow in warm and friendly neighborhoods are likely to develop a pleasing personality. They also learn how to share and care.

Neighbours during Earlier Times

Even though it is important to know our neighbours well and maintain a cordial relationship with them, people living in the cities do not make an effort to do so. They usually blame their hectic lifestyle for this. This is quite unlike the people belonging to older generations.

In earlier times, people gave a lot of importance to their neighbours. They made an effort to bond with their neighbours. Their neighbours were an integral part of their lives. They often invited their neighbours to their place. They met regularly during the evening hours. The elderly men in the neighbourhood sat down together post lunch to chit chat. They enjoyed each other’s company until late evening and returned home only around dinner time.

The elderly women went together to the temple during morning or evening hours. They also sat down in the neighbourhood park to chat with each other. The kids, on the other hand, played together for hours. The women in the neighbourhood often went together to the market. They helped each other with household chores. They all lived as one big happy family. This tradition continues in the Indian villages even until today.

We must be good for those living in our neighbourhood if we want to be treated the same way. Our life becomes more enriching and wholesome in the company of good neighbours.

Essay on My Neighbour (500 words) – Essay 4

My experiences with my neighbours.

We live in a society. There are eight families on each floor. There are several floors and many towers in society. This makes it a big neighbourhood. The residential welfare association of our society is very active. They make sure we all celebrate various festivals together. Big events are organized at different festivals. This brings all the neighbours close and helps them bond well. I have had some really good experience living in this neighbourhood but some incidents have not been so good.

Some Good Experiences with My Neighbours

We are on good terms with most of the families living on our floor. My parents understand the importance of maintaining a cordial relationship with the neighbours and thus make an effort to bond with them.

One of the lady living on our floor is very good friend with my grandmother. They both visit the temple during the evening hours. During winter afternoons they sit in the park and knit. My mother often invites her home so that the two elderly ladies can spend time together.

I also have two very good friends in my neighbour. I go with them to the park every evening. We play together as our mothers sit and chat with each other. We also visit each other’s place to play. I feel great to have good friends in my neighbourhood especially because it makes the vacation time a lot more fun. My parents are working. They both go to work in the morning and return only by evening. I stay with my grandparents during the day.

Since they are old they cannot play with me. But they do allow me to call my neighbourhood friends home or let me go there for a few hours after I study for some time. The company of my neighbourhood friends makes my vacations super fun and exciting. I go swimming and cycling with them during the evening hours. The mother of one of my neighbourhood friends accompanies us as we go for such activities.

We exchange gifts with our neighbours on the occasion of Diwali and New Year. We also have lunch or dinner together to celebrate these occasions.

Some Bad Experiences with My Neighbours

While some of our neighbours are really sweet and stand by us in our good and bad times, unfortunately, we also have some troublesome neighbours. We have had our share of bad experiences when it comes to neighbours. Three girls have rented an apartment on our floor. They often play loud music during the late evening hours. This disrupts our sleep. We also have a hard time studying during this time.

We have requested them to keep the volume low many times. But it seems like they do not bother about others. Another one of our neighbours is quite weird. It is a family of four – two kids and their parents. We have tried to approach them and be friends with them. However, it seems like their parents want them to maintain distance from us. They often behave rudely and do not bond well with anyone on the floor.

It is great to have good neighbours. However, not everyone has this privilege. I am glad to have some really nice people in my neighbourhood.

Long Essay on My Neighbour (600 Words) – Essay 5

My memories with my neighbours.

We need to relocate to a new place every few years because of my father’s job. It is difficult to adjust to the new atmosphere. It takes time to adapt to new surroundings and people. However, we have been lucky so far when it comes to neighbours. We have always had good neighbours.

The Old Lady in Our Neighbourhood

We shifted to Lucknow when I was five years old. I really loved that place. We stayed there for three years and I made some really fond memories of that place. I loved our single storey house with a small front lawn, I loved the delicious delicacies of the place, I loved our weekend excursions but most of all I loved my family’s bonding with the old lady in our neighbourhood. Her name was Mrs. Shukla who’s son was preparing for the JEE from best IIT coaching of Lucknow .

She stayed just next to our house and we connected with her very well. I have a faint memory of her coming to our house on the very first day we shifted. She prepared tea and snacks for us and welcomed us to the neighbourhood. We felt at home at once. She sat in her front lawn and knitted sweaters during winter afternoons. My mother often joined her to learn some knitting techniques. She once knitted a small blue sweater for my doll. I was overjoyed to receive it.

Many times when my parents went shopping, they left us at Mrs. Shukla’s place. She took very good care of us. Her grandchildren visited her during the summer vacations. We looked forward to that time as we got along really well with those kids. We often invited them to our place and played all day long. Many times, we also went to their place and it was great fun.

The Punjabi Family in Our Neighbourhood

When I was eight years old, we shifted to Chandigarh. It is a beautiful city. It is very well planned with lovely houses and surroundings. We rented an apartment in a good locality. The atmosphere of the place was quite pleasing and so were our neighbours. Our next door neighbours were a Punjabi family. It was a joint family. There were a total of seven members in the family. Their daughter was almost the same age as mine and I got along really well with her. She often came over to our place during the evening and we played for hours.

Sometimes, we went together to the park to take swings and play badminton. She had two brothers who were older than my brother but very friendly. They always called my brother to play cricket with them. My brother looked forward to playing with them. My mother also became very good friends with their mother. They both went shopping together. They often exchanged recipes and chatted for hours. The two years we spent in Chandigarh were really fun. It would not be wrong to say that the Punjabi family living in our neighbourhood made it even more fun.

The Gujrati Couple

I also cherish the one year we spent in Indore. I was eleven years old when we shifted to this city. It was quite different from the cities I had lived in earlier. A Gujarati couple lived in our neighbourhood. They had bought an apartment close to ours just a few days before we shifted.

So, even they were busy unpacking and decorating their place at the time we shifted. The place was as new to them as it was for us. So, the lady often went out to explore the nearby places with my mother. She cooked delicious curries and often gave us some portion. I loved her warm and friendly nature. Her husband was also very polite and helpful.

Good neighbours enrich our childhood experiences. I am glad we have had some really nice ones. I hope we continue to meet such beautiful and helpful people in the future as well.

I live in a great neighbourhood. It is wonderful because it offers us a lot of facilities. The green park near my house makes the area much more beautiful. Similarly, the swings in the park ensure the kids get to play cheerfully all day long.

Moreover, my neighbourhood also has many other bonuses. A grocery store adjacent to the park makes sure people get all their needs fulfilled without having to go far. All my neighbours buy their things from that grocery store only.

The owner also lives in the same area so he is very cordial with everyone. The grocery store saves everyone a long trip to the market and also their time. The park in my neighbourhood remains clean at all times.

The maintenance team makes sure they clean and sanitize it from time to time. It allows my neighbours to sit and relax in the evenings and take walks in the morning. The clean and fresh air gives everyone a great experience.

Why I Love My Neighbourhood

Apart from the top-notch facilities available in my neighbourhood, we also have amazing neighbours who make our lives better. A good neighbourhood is not made of facilities only but good people as well.

I got lucky in this case because my neighbours are very sweet. They help in maintaining the peace of the area so everyone lives in harmony. I have seen very often that if there is an emergency at anyone’s place, everyone rushes to help.

Similarly, we also organize events from time to time so that the whole neighbourhood gathers and enjoy themselves. I have a lot of friends in my neighbourhood with whom I play.

Most of them are my age so we meet every evening to cycle together and play on swings. We also go to each other’s birthday parties and sing and dance. The most favourite thing about my neighbourhood is definitely the residents.

I always notice how we never let any poor person go back empty-handed. My neighbourhood also organizes a donation drive every year. In this, each family donates clothes, toys and other useful commodities for the needy.

Thus, we all live together as a large family. Even though we live in different houses, our hearts are bounded by the same love and respect for each other.

English Summary

Essay on Neighbours

A good neighbour is a great blessing. He is more than relative to us. Our relatives, living far off, may not be in a position to help us in our troubles and sorrows, but a good neighbour is ever ready to help us when we face misfortunes.

He lives next door. He can easily help us whenever we may need his help. I have one such ideal neighbour He is a kind-hearted and sympathetic fellow. Though older in age, he is the merriest and most suitable for company.

He is never found wanting whenever I need his advice or help. He is ever ready to sacrifice his rest or comfort for my sake. His mature experience is always there to guide me in this world and save me from pitfalls.

He is the most unselfish and self-sacrificing man I have ever come across. He has almost become a member of our family from whom I conceal nothing. I discuss all my plans and schemes with him and he gives me his mature advice.

His mature advice is very valuable for me not only in theory but also in practice He is highly considerate and extremely accommodating. He never says an unkind word. He is always full of sympathy, love and affection for me.

He participates in all my joys and sorrows. He is a great prop to me in this dark and dreary life. He is a pillar of strength to me in the midst of storms and tempests of my life. He has been of great help to me on many an occasion.

Once it so happened that all of a sudden at midnight I fell seriously ill. I began to vomit and my heart began to sink. He at once came running and sat by my bedside the whole night.

He arranged for medical aid at that odd hour. For full seven days and nights, he nursed me with his own hands. I can never forget his sympathy, kindness and service.

How can I repay such a kindly neighbour? May God bless him!

Getting along well with your neighbors makes your community a happier and safer place to live. The key to being a good neighbor is clear and consistent communication. Introduce yourself to your neighbors and then stay in contact over time. Try to be courteous by keeping your noise levels low and your yard well-maintained. If you want to go above and beyond, you could even participate in a neighborhood association or watch.

Things You Should Know

  • Always be respectful and considerate of your neighbors. Keep your yard clean, follow any noise regulations, and put your trash out at the right time.
  • Make an effort to get to know your neighbors. Introduce yourself if you've never met before.
  • Deal with any issues face to face in a calm, respectful way.

Being Respectful and Considerate

Step 1 Maintain and clean any shared spaces.

  • For example, to maintain a lawn space, talk with your neighbor about rotating mowing duties each week.

Step 2 Care for your own yard and garden.

  • If you can’t do this maintenance on your own, consider hiring a professional lawn service.

Step 3 Put your trash out at the right time and day.

  • Most waste companies have very particular policies regarding what types of trash they will pick up and how it must be set out. For example, it may not be enough to simply place large branches by the curb of your house. You might need to cut and tie them into bundles.
  • Following the local trash rules also helps to cut down on the presence of pests and vermin, such as mice.

Step 4 Keep your pets quiet and under control.

  • Let your neighbors know that they can come talk with you if your pets are ever bothering them. For example, you might say, “If you ever hear my dog barking too much in the evenings, just let me know.”
  • If you are walking in your neighborhood, practice common courtesy by picking up your pet’s poop, too.

Step 5 Follow your area’s noise regulations.

  • If you live in an apartment complex, the leasing company will usually provide you with a list of community rules, which usually includes a statement about noise.
  • Go ahead and lower your noise level if you even think that you are being loud.
  • Use what you know about your neighbors to determine what is appropriate, too. For example, if you know that the person next door works nights, then take that into account and adjust your noise levels accordingly.

Getting to Know Your Neighbors

Step 1 Introduce yourself...

  • For a more informal approach, say hi to your neighbors when they (or you) are outside walking their dog or working on their lawn.
  • When you first meet your neighbor you might say, “Hi! I’m Fred Thompson. I live 2 doors down from you and just wanted to come over and welcome you to the neighborhood.”
  • You can also give you neighbor any friendly local tips, such as what time the garbage or mail carrier stops by.
  • A welcoming gift can be anything from a friendly card to a basket filled with local foods or produce.

Step 2 Do your neighbors a favor when possible.

  • For example, if your neighbor is going out of town, they might ask you to watch over their home. Then, when you take a trip, you can ask them to return the favor.

Step 3 Attend and host neighborhood events and associations.

  • For example, a community association could work together to put on a local street festival or even small dinners.

Communicating Openly with Your Neighbors

Step 1 Stay calm when talking with your neighbor.

  • For example, to give yourself a few days to think everything over, you might say, “I understand where you are coming from, but I need to consider how to fix it on my end. Can we talk about this over the weekend again?”

Step 2 Deal with any problems face to face.

  • This doesn’t necessarily apply if you feel as if the safety of you, your family, or the neighborhood is at stake. In those situations, you might want to reach out to local officials for assistance.
  • Avoid gossiping about any issues with your neighbor to other neighbors or people in the community. This only creates additional problems.

Step 3 Give your neighbors notice before parties.

  • The same goes for any other large, loud gatherings, such as ongoing construction.

To be a good neighbor, do your part to clean up any shared spaces, like the lawn of a duplex or the hallway of an apartment building. Consoles them in bereavement and sustains and respects their rights. He associates with all irrespective of caste, creed and colour. His heart aches for them, head thinks for them and hands work for them.

He runs to their houses in danger and rushes to nurse them in illness. He is not a self-centred man. He is not envious of the fame· and wealth of his neighbours. He is very free, frank and co-operative. His words are sweet, actions are good and thoughts are pure. He lives with. all in peace and amity. In short, he is theirs and they are his.

It emphasizes the need for respect for individuality and the prevention of conflicts. However, it’s essential to remember that while fences can ensure peace, they should not be barriers to communication and mutual understanding.

500 Words Essay on Good Fences Make Good Neighbours

The proverb “Good fences make good neighbours” has been a cornerstone of societal wisdom for centuries. At its core, it suggests that clear boundaries, both figurative and literal, promote harmonious relationships. While this concept may seem simplistic, it holds profound implications for individual relationships, community dynamics, and international relations.

The Interplay of Boundaries and Relationships

The adage is often interpreted literally, advocating for physical boundaries like fences to establish clear demarcations of property. This clarity prevents disputes over land ownership, fostering peace among neighbours. However, the concept extends beyond physical borders. It is equally applicable to the metaphorical boundaries we set in our interpersonal relationships. By establishing clear expectations and limits, we can prevent misunderstandings, respect each other’s space, and cultivate healthier relationships.

Community Dynamics and the Role of Boundaries

In the context of community dynamics, the proverb underscores the importance of communal rules and norms. These societal ‘fences’ provide a framework within which individuals can operate without infringing upon others’ rights. They prevent conflicts and maintain harmony by ensuring that everyone is aware of their responsibilities and the consequences of overstepping boundaries.

International Relations and Boundaries

At the international level, the proverb’s wisdom resonates in the form of clearly defined national borders and the principles of sovereignty. Countries with well-demarcated borders tend to have fewer territorial disputes, leading to peaceful coexistence. Moreover, respecting each nation’s sovereignty—its right to govern itself without external interference—mirrors the respect for individual autonomy reflected in the proverb.

A Balancing Act: Boundaries and Connectivity

While the proverb advocates for clear boundaries, it should not be misconstrued as a call for isolation. Boundaries are not walls that shut us off from others, but rather guidelines that help us interact in a respectful and considerate manner. In an increasingly interconnected world, it is crucial to strike a balance between maintaining our boundaries and fostering global cooperation.

“Good fences make good neighbours” is a timeless piece of wisdom highlighting the importance of boundaries in promoting peace and harmony. Whether applied to personal relationships, community dynamics, or international relations, the principle remains the same: clear boundaries prevent conflicts and foster mutual respect. However, as we navigate our interconnected world, it is crucial to remember that these fences should serve as guidelines for interaction rather than barriers to connection. Ultimately, the goal is not to isolate ourselves, but to create a framework within which we can coexist peacefully and productively.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Essay on Good Fences Make Good Neighbours

June 25, 2019 by Sandeep

A fence is a boundary created in order to maintain privacy. The neighbours can be better if there are boundaries. Neighbours could maintain peace by continuing to keep a fence and lack of which can make one nonchalant about the space and privacy of their neighbour next door resulting in enmity.

Why fence is a must

A fence eliminates any chance of trespassing into a zone which belongs to you. This is also true for relationships, neighbouring countries, colleagues or everything else in life.

One should not build stone making it impossible to communicate but rather than building a low fence in order to maintain a distance. Some of the famous walls in include the Great Wall of China, Berlin wall and the walls separating America and Mexico also wall that separate Israelis from Palestinians. Countries across the world are trying to ensure that robust boundary so that others do not cross the borders.

A classic example for fences or boundaries in political terms is that of our country India’s, where we have tried to make good boundaries with our landlocked neighbours in order to avoid border disputes. There are many borders and out of those some of them are Wagah border, Siachen glacier, Arunachal Pradesh, etc.

When we talk about India and its immediate neighbours in the past, weak fences have resulted in infiltration from either side ultimately distressing truce and goodwill between the countries and leading to conflicts as well as disharmony. Even then the countries have reduced examples of peripheral disturbance.

There is also a school of thought where some kind of boundary results in greater longing as well as maintains harmony amongst people. This is very much evident by how people meet after a few days of staying apart.

Despite seeming friendly towards each other, a barrier assures division. Too much of anything is bad in this case excessive friendliness leads to the meddling of neighbours into the lives of people living next door.

In recent times, people have been keeping a distance from others in order to ensure that they do get hurt by any sentiments or words. Fence or boundaries are vital for just maintaining privacy but also maintaining harmony and peace both at home as well as outside.

Disadvantages of creating a fence

In some cases, the creation of a boundary can create isolation. In yesteryear, penetrable railings made it easier for neighbours to come home and casually converse about mundane things. Nonetheless, times have been changed and people are very often are not aware of who resides even in their immediate community, thanks to the boundaries. When a wall is created it ends with frictions over its need in the long term as people have a difference of opinions.

For citizens of one country who share a cordial relationship with their neighbours, it can become difficult to cross borders as the number of permissions required for the same can be immense. When it comes to relationship especially personal ones, it takes years to build walls before even talking to the person.

Eventually, a word like bosom friends or true friends will be conflicting word for people as they would have already created an obstruction in their relationships much before. A man is known to be sociable animal and by building such confines it removes social interaction. This is terrible as there is a fast world out there and most people tend to move away from each other at a faster pace despite having all means of communication.

Civilisations have progressed because of various social, cultural and technological reasons. If there is no social interaction and intermingling would take a back seat leading to the death of free exchange of ideas and growth among human beings. This can have a deeper impact on human beings.

Thus this age-old belief of good fences making good neighbours holds true even in the modern age. But like everything, even the boundaries should not become restrictions for people to communicate with each other. Robert Frost, the author of the poem, may have had felt that removing barriers for ensuring hassle-free communication and interaction between was ideal but for ensuring hassle-free communication and interaction between was ideal but he could not see the multifaceted parts of the creation of fences-positives and negatives.

Obstacles must be removed and be placed adequately in order to assure that quietness is not affected, so long as boundaries are not invaded and there is complete devotion in various relationships at all times. A fence is nothing but a way to keep one’s privacy and letting any intruders to trespass onto the land. The famous saying simply stresses upon the need for privacy between neighbours so that no ill things can occur against your wishes.

In a life where exploring new places is everything, being a good acquaintance is necessary. It doesn’t come with the tag of being best friends. It just means living peacefully in a neighbourhood, renting a home or with someone.

A good neighbour should know how to behave well with their neighbours. For instance, a simple gesture such as a “hello” or good morning is all one needs to make their neighbours happy and cheer up from their usual morning routines. So being a good neighbour is not that difficult at all. It’s true that everyone gets along well with each other. But by just being friendly and greeting you’re considerate and cooperative.

These three things are what makes a person a good neighbour. But there is one thing no matter how good a neighbour is there is always both threat and a sense of security about their privacy. Obviously, it does not occur purposely but there is always a scope for something good or bad.

A fence made in good belief between the assets doesn’t obstruct the relationship that you have with your neighbours. It just safeguards your family’s interest and one’s space. There should always be a boundary in a relationship that would not be crossed at any cost. It shouldn’t be a huge fence, blocking all the interactions with neighbours. But a big fence is enough to keep neighbours at a distance.

Not everyone has the knowledge of living in a typical neighbourhood. Some stay mingled with neighbours that they even know what’s cooking in their house and some stay so far that they cannot even come whenever they feel like. If we think like that then we will realise that we are creating various different walls with our neighbours that that will keep us attached for a lifetime. But remember to steer clear of too much friendliness is not good.

Nobody likes an interference of a third person in their private lives if the neighbours are given too much freedom then it may lead to unpleasant incidents. Thus the division between neighbours is a way to create a safe and secure feeling at the same time they may well create isolation amongst each other. So always be friendly with others when needed but at the same time keep a notable distance away from them. As the saying goes by “be a good neighbour but at the same time maintain a distance from them”.

The funny thing about the saying is that the very act of rebuilding the fence together every year is what brings these neighbours together. It’s why they are spending time together; it’s why they are talking. By making the fence “good” again, by fixing the gaps and the places where it’s crumbling away, these two men are actually better neighbours.

When the neighbours are occupied and doing something productive rather than just ignoring each other they become good understanding neighbours. Basically, when you say fences it means establishing boundaries between you and your neighbour that helps both to act and respect each other’s privacy. For instance, you and your neighbours next door need to know for certain when exactly your neighbour’s kids come to play on your trampoline and makes lots of noise they, then both neighbours. This will help the neighbours experience more peace with less conflict. Thus boundaries can make for a good relationship between neighbours.

A good neighbour is a work in progress. When we define neighbours as that living in residential proximity to one another, but also it is contingency, individuality and local norms “ensure that neighbours relations” and expectations are variable.

According the poem “Mending a wall” which is a favourite among literary lovers who enjoy discussing its true meaning. Some believe that the narrator of the poem dislikes the wall which divides one neighbour from the other. While others think the poem tells the story of a well-established relationship and ritual between two friends and neighbours.

The above-given proverb contains the general observations and experiences of humankind, including life’s multiple contradictions. Benjamin Franklin leading English author once said love and respect your neighbour but at the same time guard yourself from trespassing.

A fence is necessary to keep the privacy of any land. It keeps out the intruders who may otherwise encroach upon the land. It is a good thing even for neighbouring houses. The neighbours might be friendly towards each other. But there is always the chance of a quarrel between them.

The college application season is upon us, and high school students everywhere are staring down at one of the most daunting tasks: the college essay. As someone who has guided countless applicants through the admissions process and reviewed admissions essays on an undergraduate admissions committee, I've pinpointed the essential ingredient to a differentiated candidacy—the core of your college admissions X-factor .

The essential ingredient to your college admissions X-factor is your intellectual vitality. Intellectual vitality is your passion for learning and curiosity. By demonstrating and conveying this passion, you can transform an average essay into a compelling narrative that boosts your chances of getting accepted to your top schools. Here are five dynamic strategies to achieve that goal.

Unleash Your Authentic Voice

Admissions officers sift through thousands of essays every year. What stops them in their tracks? An authentic voice that leaps off the page. Forget trying to guess what the admissions committee wants to hear. Focus on being true to yourself. Share your unique perspective, your passions, and your values. Authenticity resonates deeply with application reviewers, making your essay memorable and impactful. You need not have experienced trauma or tragedy to create a strong narrative. You can write about what you know—intellectually or personally—to convey your enthusiasm, creativity, and leadership. Intellectual vitality shines through when you write with personalized reflection about what lights you up.

Weave A Captivating Story

Everyone loves a good story, and your essay is the perfect place to tell yours. The Common Application personal statement has seven choices of prompts to ground the structure for your narrative. The most compelling stories are often about the smallest moments in life, whether it’s shopping at Costco or about why you wear socks that have holes. Think of the Common Application personal statement as a window into your soul rather than a dry list of your achievements or your overly broad event-based life story. Use vivid anecdotes to bring your experiences to life. A well-told story can showcase your growth, highlight your character, and illustrate how you've overcome challenges. Intellectual vitality often emerges in these narratives, revealing how your curiosity and proactive approach to learning have driven you to explore and innovate.

Reflect And Reveal Insights

It's not just about what you've done—it's about what you've learned along the way. When you are writing about a specific event, you can use the STAR framework—situation, task, action, and result (your learning). Focus most of your writing space on the “R” part of this framework to dive deeply into your experiences and reflect on how they've shaped your aspirations and identity.

Google Chrome Deadline—72 Hours To Update Or Delete Your Browser

The fed quietly admits gold is replacing the dollar as collapse fear predicted to trigger a 15 7 trillion etf bitcoin price flip, apple loop iphone 16 pro details ios 18 s ai plans iphone 14 pro special offer.

The most insightful college-specific supplement essays demonstrate depth of thought, and the ability to connect past experiences with your future life in college and beyond. Reflecting on your intellectual journey signals maturity and a readiness to embrace the college experience. It shows admissions officers that you engage deeply with your studies and are eager to contribute to the academic community.

Highlight Your Contributions—But Don’t Brag

Whether it's a special talent, an unusual hobby, or a unique perspective, showcasing what you can bring to the college environment can make a significant impact. Recognize that the hard work behind the accomplishment is what colleges are interested in learning more about—not retelling about the accomplishment itself. (Honors and activities can be conveyed in another section of the application.) Walk us through the journey to your summit; don’t just take us to the peak and expect us know how you earned it.

Intellectual vitality can be demonstrated through your proactive approach to solving problems, starting new projects, or leading initiatives that reflect your passion for learning and growth. These experiences often have a place in the college-specific supplement essays. They ground the reasons why you want to study in your major and at the particular college.

Perfect Your Prose

Great writing is essential. Anyone can use AI or a thesaurus to assist with an essay, but AI cannot write your story in the way that you tell it. Admissions officers don’t give out extra credit for choosing the longest words with the most amount of syllables.

The best essays have clear, coherent language and are free of errors. The story is clearly and specifically told. After drafting, take the time to revise and polish your writing. Seek feedback from teachers, mentors, or trusted friends, but ensure the final piece is unmistakably yours. A well-crafted essay showcases your diligence and attention to detail—qualities that admissions officers highly value. Intellectual vitality is also reflected in your writing process, showing your commitment to excellence and your enthusiasm for presenting your best self.

Crafting a standout college essay is about presenting your true self in an engaging, reflective, and polished manner while showcasing your intellectual vitality. Happy writing.

Wife of Justice Alito called upside-down flag ‘signal of distress’

In January 2021, Martha-Ann Alito said the flag, a symbol embraced by election deniers, was raised outside her home in response to a neighborhood dispute.

The wife of Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. told a Washington Post reporter in January 2021 that an upside-down American flag recently flown on their flagpole was “an international signal of distress” and indicated that it had been raised in response to a neighborhood dispute.

Martha-Ann Alito made the comments when the reporter went to the couple’s Fairfax County, Va., home to follow up on a tip about the flag, which was no longer flying when he arrived.

The incident documented by reporter Robert Barnes, who covered the Supreme Court for The Post for 17 years and retired last year, offers fresh details about the raising of the flag and the first account of comments about it by the justice’s wife.

The Post decided not to report on the episode at the time because the flag-raising appeared to be the work of Martha-Ann Alito, rather than the justice, and connected to a dispute with her neighbors, a Post spokeswoman said. It was not clear then that the argument was rooted in politics, the spokeswoman said.

The upside-down flag has long been a sign of distress for the military and protest by various political factions. In the fraught weeks before and after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol , it had also been adopted by supporters of the “Stop the Steal” movement, which embraced Donald Trump’s false claims that Joe Biden stole the election from him. Some of the rioters who participated in the attack had carried upside-down American flags with them.

The display of the politically charged symbol outside the Alitos’ home became a public controversy last week after the New York Times reported on it , raising new ethics questions for the Supreme Court as it prepares to issue pivotal rulings in two cases related to efforts by Trump and his supporters to block Biden’s 2020 election victory.

Alito said in a statement to the Times that he had no involvement in the flag being flown at his home, which he said was briefly raised by his wife in response to a neighbor’s use of “objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.”

The Post subsequently reported on May 17 that residents said the flag was raised following a heated confrontation between Martha-Ann Alito and a neighbor over political yard signs, one of which carried a profane anti-Trump message and another that carried a message along the lines of “you are complicit.” One resident, who like the others spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect their privacy in a sensitive situation, said the flag flew for between two and five days.

Samuel Alito told Fox News last week that the signs attacked his wife directly. Martha-Ann Alito has not publicly commented on the recent reports.

On Jan. 20, 2021 — the day of Biden’s inauguration, which the Alitos did not attend — Barnes went to their home to follow up on the tip about the flag. He encountered the couple coming out of the house. Martha-Ann Alito was visibly upset by his presence, demanding that he “get off my property.”

As he described the information he was seeking, she yelled, “It’s an international signal of distress!”

Alito intervened and directed his wife into a car parked in their driveway, where they had been headed on their way out of the neighborhood. The justice denied the flag was hung upside down as a political protest, saying it stemmed from a neighborhood dispute and indicating that his wife had raised it.

Martha-Ann Alito then got out of the car and shouted in apparent reference to the neighbors: “Ask them what they did!” She said yard signs about the couple had been placed in the neighborhood. After getting back in the car, she exited again and then brought out from their residence a novelty flag, the type that would typically decorate a garden. She hoisted it up the flagpole. “There! Is that better?” she yelled.

Later that week, Samuel Alito issued a statement to The Post in response to written questions about whether it was his decision to fly the flag and whether it was flown to protest the election results, reflect concern about the state of the country or something else.

“I had no involvement whatsoever in the flying of the flag,” he said, using wording almost identical to the statement provided to the Times last week. “It was placed by Mrs. Alito solely in response to a neighbor’s use of objectionable and personally insulting language on yard signs.”

Since the Times article, dozens of Democratic lawmakers and some legal experts have called for the justice to recuse himself from the 2020 election-related cases, saying the upside-down flag outside his home raises questions about his impartiality or creates the appearance of bias. He has drawn rebukes from some Republicans as well.

The spotlight intensified Thursday after a second Times article reported that a different flag , embraced by some Christian nationalists who want to bring religion into American government and also carried by Jan. 6 rioters, has been flown outside the Alitos’ vacation home in New Jersey in recent months and years. Three people who live or vacation in Long Beach Island, N.J., told The Post on Friday that the “Appeal to Heaven” flag was on display there last summer, and provided photos of it. The Post also found an image of the flag at the property on Google Maps.

In Virginia, a neighbor who lives down the street from the Alitos told The Post on May 17 that her adult daughter had placed the protest signs that prompted the dispute with Martha-Ann Alito outside her home in the weeks after the 2020 election. Martha-Ann Alito and the neighbor’s daughter clashed over the signs in January 2021, both the mother and a second neighbor said. The daughter, who now lives on the West Coast, declined an interview request.

The Alitos did not respond to requests for comment from The Post in recent days about the neighbors’ accounts or the two flag controversies.

The scrutiny of Martha-Ann Alito, 70, comes two years after another Supreme Court spouse — Virginia “Ginni” Thomas — made headlines for her political activism connected to the 2020 election. After reports that Ginni Thomas was among those pushing Trump administration officials to overturn Biden’s victory, Democrats called for Justice Clarence Thomas to recuse himself from election-related cases, a demand he has ignored in all but one case .

The recusal statute standard that applies to federal judges and justices is not limited to actual bias — it also includes the appearance of bias. For that reason, some court experts and retired judges said in interviews that both Alito and Thomas should recuse from the Jan. 6-related cases because of their wives’ actions.

Outside of his home in 2021, Alito indicated that the flag was his wife’s doing — not his — noting that they live together in the house and that the spouses of justices are free to express their opinions.

Retired federal judge Nancy Gertner, now a professor at Harvard Law School, said in an interview this week that she is pleased that spouses of judges and justices are not expected to stay silent. But when a partner’s views encroach on cases before the justice’s courtroom or their shared home, she added, it’s a very different situation.

The “notion that [Justice Alito] let it happen or didn’t pay attention is extraordinary,” Gertner said. “He understood the context. They were having a political battle, and this was a political statement.”

“If Alito and Thomas spell the difference between one outcome or another, that would be simply outrageous,” she said of the cases related to the 2020 election and the Jan. 6 attack. One case deals with whether Trump may be criminally prosecuted for his efforts to remain in office after losing the election. The other asks whether the Justice Department can use an obstruction charge to prosecute more than 300 Jan. 6 rioters. Decisions are expected by the end of June.

During Gertner’s tenure on the federal bench in Massachusetts, her husband was legal director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts, a legal advocacy group. No one connected to the ACLU could file a brief or argue a case before her, she said, and her work as a judge meant no political symbols could ever be displayed at their home.

If her husband had tried to put up a sign or flag at their house in response to something a neighbor displayed on their block that was inconsistent with or critical of his civil liberties work, Gertner added: “One of two things would have happened: A) a divorce and B) surely recusal.”

Martha-Ann Alito is known to have strong political opinions in private settings but has not been politically active in the way that Ginni Thomas has been , several people who know the Alitos said, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss their interactions. Campaign finance records show that in 2020 she made a $250 political donation to a Republican Senate candidate from Virginia, earmarked through the Republican fundraising platform WinRed.

One neighbor recalled a conversation with Martha-Ann Alito that turned to abortion after her husband wrote the majority opinion overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022. The neighbor, who described himself as a liberal, told her it was a difficult issue. He said Martha-Ann Alito responded flatly: “It’s not that difficult at all.”

The Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision, which eliminated the nationwide right to abortion after nearly 50 years, led to protesters showing up at the homes of conservative justices including Alito, adding to the polarization and strain that his neighbors said has descended onto their cul-de-sac in recent years.

“She’s passionate,” said the man who talked to Martha-Ann Alito about abortion.

Martha-Ann Bomgardner was a law librarian in the office of the U.S. attorney in New Jersey when she met Alito, who worked as a federal prosecutor in the appellate section from 1977 to 1981. Despite Alito’s many trips to the library, he did not ask her out for more than a year, Martha-Ann told The Post in 2006, ahead of the justice’s confirmation hearing.

“He is judicious,” she said then.

The couple married in 1985, after Alito had relocated to Washington to serve as an assistant to the solicitor general during the Reagan administration. They have two grown children.

Martha-Ann Alito has spoken publicly about being raised in a military family and her work for homeless veterans. Her father served 20 years in the U.S. Air Force, a role that sometimes required him to be away for lengthy stints. She was born at Fort Knox, the military base in Kentucky.

At the University of Kentucky, she studied comparative literature and received a master’s degree in library science. During a 2010 speech at her alma mater, she expressed frustration with the national media and reporters who had descended on the couple’s street to interview neighbors and family during the confirmation process.

She described “daily ad hominem attacks” against her husband, according to an article about the speech in the Lexington Herald-Leader, saying they “bordered on the ridiculous.”

Aaron Schaffer contributed to this report.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly described a political donation Martha-Ann Alito made in 2020 through the fundraising platform WinRed. The donation was earmarked for a Republican Senate candidate, according to federal campaign finance records.
