Eggs are certainly one of the most versatile foods. Almost every culture has its own unique egg dishes. Not only can eggs be cooked as a dish in itself, but it is also essential to tons of other foods including many sweet and savory dishes. And of course, breakfast is never complete without eggs. It makes sense, therefore, to learn the many different ways of cooking eggs. Most people start their experience in cooking eggs with more basic recipes like sunny-side up, scrambled, and soft-boiled. But once these are mastered, it is inevitable that the next adventure would be cooking an omelette. This process essay serves as an easy guide on how to cook an omelette and how to fancy it up a bit.
An omelette can be conventionally defined as a dish made of beaten eggs fried in a pan and served folded around a savory filling of meat, vegetables, dairy, or a combination of these. The word is French, which in turn may have been derived from the Latin “ lamella ”, which means “small thin plate” (Davidson, 2014). There are many good reasons why one should learn how to cook an omelette. First, it is simply delicious. Many consider the omelette as a comfort food because of its heartiness. Moreover, the omelette is such a versatile dish. There is virtually no limit to the type of filling you can stuff in this dish. You can use meats like ham or bacon; vegetables like onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, or spinach; and dairies like cheese or cream. You can even add fish such as salmon. The versatility of the omelette may be attributed to the fact that it is a very old dish. Some scholars believe that this dish originated in ancient Persia (Anderson, 2013). It can also be nutritious when eaten in moderation, especially since eggs are a good source of protein, vitamins, and unsaturated fats (Harvard School of Public Health, 2022). Finally, omelettes are also very easy and quick to prepare, which makes them the perfect go-to for busy workers and students trying to learn how to survive dorm life . Learning how to make this dish also helps people avoid the negative impact of fast food on health .
Before fancying up an omelette, it is better to start with making just a plain one. The first step in cooking a plain omelette is gathering all the basic ingredients as well as the cookware you will need. You will need at least two eggs, salt, pepper, and a tablespoon of oil or butter. You will also need a bowl for scrambling the eggs, a non-stick pan, and a non-stick spatula. Begin by beating or whisking the two eggs in a bowl until the yolks are fully combined with the egg white. If you do not have a whisk, you can use a fork. Add a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Next, heat your butter or oil in the pan for a few seconds. Eggs cook quickly so make sure to maintain a low to low-medium heat, especially if it is your first time cooking an omelette.
Once the butter has melted or the oil starts to shimmer, add the eggs. Let it sit in the pan for a few seconds to allow the omelette to take form. You can also gently tilt the pan around so that it covers the entire bottom of the pan and assume a round shape. Using the spatula, slowly stir the egg to cook evenly. Once the eggs start to become firmer, gently peel away one side of the omelette and fold it into a half-moon or semicircle shape. Turn off the heat. The remaining heat will continue to cook the egg as it rests on your pan. Transfer the egg to a plate. You can sprinkle your omelette with chopped herbs such as dill, parsley, or green onions. If you are not a fan of chopped herbs, or you do not have any, you can drizzle a bit of ketchup, mayonnaise, or any other sauce of your choice for a tangy twist.
Once you know the basic steps of cooking an omelette, you can then try to fancy it up. Cooking a fancy omelette follows the same process as cooking a plain omelette. But now there are a few more steps added. For your filling, you can choose whatever you like. But for a beginner, it is better to start with simpler ingredients like bacon, mushrooms, cheese, and spinach. Remember that some ingredients have to be cooked before you add them, since eggs cook quickly and therefore there will not be enough time for the other ingredients to cook if they are added fresh. For instance, bacon and ham need to be cooked before adding it as a filling. Mushrooms, onions, and starchy vegetables like potatoes and carrots also need to be sautéed in oil. Softer and more delicate fillings like spinach and tomatoes can be added fresh. For the purpose of simplifying the process, this essay sticks to ham, cheese, and mushrooms.
Again, start by preparing the ingredients. You will need at least two eggs, some salt and pepper, at least one tablespoon of oil or butter, and some herbs for garnishing like chives, dill, or parsley. For the filling, you will need a quarter cup of cheddar cheese, a quarter cup of diced mushrooms, and a quarter cup of diced ham. Fry the ham in a non-stick pan until it is cooked. You do not have to use a lot of oil since the ham will render fat once it is cooked. Next, sauté the mushrooms in the same pan until it is soft. Set aside both the ham and the mushrooms. Remove excess oil from the pan then add at least one tablespoon of oil or butter. Follow the same steps for cooking a plain omelette by whisking and seasoning the eggs with salt and pepper. Proceed to cook the eggs once the oil or butter is hot enough. When you reach the point that the eggs are becoming firmer, this is the time that you should sprinkle the ham, mushroom, and cheddar cheese evenly over the entire omelette. Then fold the omelette in half to create a semicircle or half-moon shape. Let the omelette cook for 30-45 seconds and then gently transfer it to a plate. Garnish your omelette with some chopped herbs of your choice.
As mentioned earlier, the great thing about omelettes is the variety of fillings you can use. The important thing to remember is to cook your filling first so you can just add it to the eggs during the last minute of cooking. This is to ensure that everything is cooked without burning the omelette. You can always mix and match your filling. Just remember to avoid overdoing it. You do not want to overstuff your eggs, since adding too much filling will make it difficult to fold the omelette neatly. Aside from the filling, you can also try a few tricks to improve its texture. For starters, you can make the texture of the eggs creamier and fluffier by adding a teaspoon of cream or mayonnaise as you whisk the egg. You can also add a splash of milk if you do not have any cream or mayonnaise available. Just make sure that it is not flavored or too sweet. These options go to the egg as you whisk it to incorporate them into the mixture well.
Learning how to cook an omelette is one of the best things you can do for yourself if you love comfort food and are trying to learn how to prepare or plan nutritious meals . This is because omelettes are so versatile that you can add basically anything you have available in your pantry. You play mix and match and find the best version of omelette for you, your family, and your friends. But remember that eggs should be eaten in moderation. So do your best to maintain physical fitness by making omelettes that contain lots of healthy stuff. Of course, you can always add meat. But balance this by also adding nutrient-packed ingredients like onions, mushrooms, bell peppers, and green leafy vegetables.

500 words essay on my favorite food.
In order to perform well in life, our body needs energy. We get this energy from the food we eat. Without food, there will be no life. In today’s world, there are so many dishes available worldwide. Food comes in a wide variety all around the world. Dosa, Paneer, Naan, Chapati, Biryani, and more Indian delicacies are available. We are also offered western cuisines such as noodles, pasta, burgers, fries, pizzas and more dominating the food industry. In my favourite food essay, I will tell you about the food I like eating the most.
As the world is advancing day by day, it is becoming easier to get access to many kinds of food at our doorstep. Every day, we all want to consume great and delicious cuisine. There are many different varieties of food accessible all throughout the world. We all like different foods, however, my personal favourite is burgers. I have eaten many cuisines but my favourite food is definitely a burger. I cannot resist myself when it comes to burgers.
Burgers are one of the most convenient and easiest foods to eat on the fly when we’re in a hurry. We can have a burger at any time of day, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, or supper, and maybe some fries and a Coke to go with it. Many restaurants are well-known for making their speciality burgers in a particular style. Preparation changes from one establishment to the next. But what exactly makes a burger taste so good? They will taste vary depending on where you go, but they are all built the same. It is made up of a bun, a ground meat patty, and various toppings like cheese, onion slices, lettuce, and other sauces.
They are so soft yet crunchy, fresh and juicy that I love eating them. Even though there are many kinds of burgers, my favourite one is a chicken burger. The chicken patty gives the burger a juicy taste and it tingles my taste buds every time I eat it. I can already smell and taste it in my mouth as soon as I walked inside McDonald’s or any other restaurant that serves chicken burgers. As soon as I take a huge mouthful of it, I forget about any problems or troubles that are going on in the outer world and concentrate my entire concentration just on my chicken burger.
I love eating a burger which is filled with cheese and vegetables . The more vegetables you add, the better it tastes. My personal favourite is lettuce. It gives the burger the right amount of freshness and crunchiness.
I always eat my burger with ketchup. Most importantly, the thing I love about eating burgers is that I get to eat French fries along with them. They work as a great side to the dish and also make my stomach full.
Even though I liked eating a burger from a famous fast food joint, nothing beats the chicken burger my mother makes at home. She prepares everything from scratch, even the burger. Thus, it is extremely fresh and healthy too.
I know and feel that burgers have the great flavour and taste that would make anyone’s stomach pleased after a long day of work. I can tell by the reactions on people’s faces when they order their preferred burger variant. Overall, I don’t believe any other fast food will taste as good as a chicken burger. It’s just difficult to think that something will triumph in the future. As a result, I consider my favourite dish to be the best ever created.
Perhaps the great thing about burgers is the great variety they offer. It has options for all people, who prefer vegetarian, non-vegetarian and even vegans. Thus, you can select the patty of your burger and dive right in.
There are a large number of burger joints being started in every corner of the city, each serving a variety of their own specialised and self-curated recipes. Burgers that are health-friendly and a go-to with a diet are also being introduced by these newly upcoming burger places. There are a lot many burger cafes that give their customers the choice to create their own burgers by providing them with a choice between patties, fillings, veggies, sauces as well as the number of burger layers they want.
Even though my personal favourite is a chicken burger, I also enjoy eating cheeseburgers and vegetable burgers. For me, all burgers taste delicious. Whenever we go out to eat with friends , I always order a burger.
My friends who do not eat non-vegetarian also eat burgers thanks to the great variety it offers. When we order food at home, we make sure to offer all kinds of burgers from cheeseburgers to chicken burgers, so that we get a taste of everything in our meal. Thus, I love burgers and their great variety makes it better.

Even though my favourite food is a burger, I enjoy other foods as well like Pizza and Pasta. However, I feel when it comes to eating daily, nothing beats homemade food. The food we eat daily is what helps us gain energy. We cannot eat our favourite food daily as it will become boring then, but our staple food is something we enjoy eating on an everyday basis.
Question 1: Why do we need food?
Answer 1: We need food because it provides nutrients, energy for activity, growth. Similarly, all functions of the body like breathing, digesting food, and keeping warm are made possible because of food. It also helps in keeping our immune system healthy.
Question 2: Should you eat your favourite food all the time?
Answer 2: No, never. Favourite foods are meant to be enjoyed when there is any special occasion, or when you are tired of your regular homemade food. Eating too much of your favourite food will make your taste buds adjust to it and eventually, it will not remain our favourite. Excess of anything is bad and the same goes for our favourite food. Thus, we must eat it occasionally so that it remains our favourite.
Question 3: Is fast food healthy? Should we not consume fast food at all?
Answer 3: Fast food is often high in calories, sodium, and harmful fat, with one meal frequently providing enough for a whole day. It is also deficient in nutrients and nearly devoid of fruit, vegetables, and fibre. That doesn’t mean you should completely avoid fast food. It is feasible to eat fast food without jeopardising your healthy diet. Take advantage of the nutritious side dishes available at many fast-food places. Look for meals that include lean proteins, vegetables, and fibre, and avoid anything that is supersized.

Have you ever experienced food poisoning when none of your dining mates got sick from the same meal? It’ll make you question whether you really have food poisoning at all. But as it turns out, it’s entirely possible that several people can eat the same food and only one person can contract food poisoning.
“People always come into the emergency room stating, ‘I know I don’t have food poisoning because I’m the only one who got sick,’” said board-certified emergency physician Dr. Justin Mazur . “Patient education here is critical, as it is more common that not everyone gets sick from your garden variety food poisoning.”
If you’re not familiar with what food poisoning is, it refers to a plethora of gastrointestinal symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever.
“The symptoms are generally attributed to food that is contaminated with a virus, bacteria or, less commonly, a parasite,” Mazur said.
Being the only person to suffer a bout of food poisoning after a meal is a tough draw. But unfortunately, it’s a common occurrence, and there’s a reason some people may go unscathed by a little undercooked meat or an unwashed vegetable. Ahead, doctors explained why some people get food poisoning and others don’t, despite eating the same exact thing.
To put it simply, your body may not be able to fight off food poisoning. Every single person is completely different in a multitude of ways, including their immune system and gut microbiome , the home of trillions of microorganisms that can influence your digestive system and overall health.
When it comes to food poisoning, it completely disrupts your gut microbiome, which is why you feel so sick. If you and your friend eat the same undercooked hamburger and you have an unhealthy microbiome while they have a healthier one, you may experience a bit of an upset stomach afterward.
“A person with an inadequate microbiome will experience food poisoning more often,” Mazur said.
If you fuel your body with healthy foods, your microbiome will thrive. If you don’t, your gut microbiome may not be able to fight off bacteria from the undercooked or raw food that gave you food poisoning.
Mazur said the characteristics of an inadequate microbiome are a lack of beneficial bacteria and microbial diversity, as well as high concentrations of pathogenic bacteria, which is a significant risk factor for frequent bouts of food poisoning.
He also noted two other things that can affect whether someone gets sick or not: if they ate enough of the food to become infected, and what else they ate or drank that day.
“If you started the day drinking alcohol heavily, you’ve already damaged your healthy microbiome for the day, making you more susceptible on that specific day,” Mazur said.
Your eating habits and preferences can increase your risk of developing food poisoning.
“Contaminated meat, poultry and seafood that is served raw or undercooked is a risk factor. Consuming raw dairy foods such as eggs, milk or raw dough is another risk factor,” Mazur said.
In terms of a diet that will affect the health of your gut microbiome, Mazur said to avoid ” a diet high in refined carbohydrates, processed foods and sugar” and to maximize your intake of fiber, fruits and vegetables.
He added that drinking alcohol may be at play with getting food poisoning, too.
“Alcohol intake damages the microbiome and is a lesser-known cause of dysbiosis — overgrowth of pathogenic bacteria — and is another risk factor for an inadequate microbiome,” Mazur said.
If your gut is inflamed from your diet, Dr. Elizabeth Sharp, a board-certified internal medicine physician, said it’s “more likely that pathogenic bacteria or viruses could penetrate and cause an infection.”
Another reason you could be more susceptible to food poisoning is “if [someone has] a weakened immune system or less reserves to mount an immune response to fight off the pathogenic bacteria in the food,” she added.
So how can you prevent food poisoning? Aside from reading the numerous articles HuffPost has published about food safety , proper preparation and storage methods, our experts believe that a healthy microbiome is also crucial.
Mazur said this “may be the very best defense against invading pathogens. Entrenched healthy bacteria support each other preferentially and make it harder for new and/or invading bacteria to take root.”

Harvard University Admissions
The summer before senior year is a critical time for those preparing to submit college applications in the fall. While summer is traditionally seen as a time to relax and recharge, it also offers a valuable opportunity for students to develop their passion projects, start writing their application essays, and plan a timeline that will allow them to stay organized and on track throughout the fall. As they look forward to compiling their college applications, here are five essential tasks that rising seniors should tackle this summer to set themselves up for success:
One of the most daunting and time-consuming parts of the college application process is writing the personal statement , also known as the Common App essay. Students should anticipate that the writing process will take longer than they initially expect it to, as the best essays require self-reflection, multiple drafts, and a great deal of editing. Writing this essay over the summer will allow students time to brainstorm, draft, and revise without the added pressure of schoolwork.
The Common App essay should tell a compelling story. Often, it will serve to highlight a student’s hook and cohere all of the elements of a student’s application around a central narrative. Students should begin by reflecting on their experiences, values, and academic and personal goals. While many students assume that a standout essay requires a groundbreaking discovery, a life-altering experience, or a heroic feat, some of the most engaging and original essays are those that find significance in seemingly mundane or everyday experiences. By working on their essay over the summer, students not only have the time to workshop a unique topic, but they can also find inspiration in the activities that they engage in outside of the classroom—a lesson they learned in their summer job, a relationship they forged during their summer travels, or a personal value or belief they developed through their summer volunteering.
While many students go on their college visits during the spring of their junior year, summer can offer a prime opportunity for students to visit colleges and hone their balanced college list . As students evaluate the schools on their list after their visits, they should consider factors such as location, size, academic programs, extracurricular activities, and campus culture. For students who have hectic summer schedules, virtual tours, college webinars, and online information sessions can provide valuable insights.
Additionally, when it comes to finalizing their college list, students should aim to include a mix of roughly two to three safety schools, four to six match schools, and four to six reach schools. Safety schools are those for which a student’s academic credentials (standardized test scores and GPA) significantly exceed the institution’s average admitted student profile. Match schools are those for which a student’s credentials are on par with the average, and reach schools are those for which a student’s credentials are below the average of admitted students’ profiles. Students should also consider all Ivy League and top-tier schools to be reach schools, no matter how competitive their GPA and standardized tests scores are. A well-balanced list will set students up for success and provide them with options when decision time comes next spring.
Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, 3. achieve standardized testing goals.
As top schools continue to reverse their test-optional policies, it is critical for students to set ambitious yet attainable goals for their standardized test scores, as they are the foundation of a competitive application. There is still time for students to sign up to sit for summer tests—the ACT will be offered on July 13 (registration deadline passed on June 7, but late registration is open until June 21), and the SAT will be offered on August 24 (August 9 is the registration deadline). Students should set a study schedule that allows them to review key concepts, practice sample questions, and take full-length practice tests during their free time.
Those who have already taken standardized tests should consider retaking them if they believe they can achieve a higher score. Higher scores can increase an applicant’s competitiveness, both for college admission and for merit-based scholarships. Consistent, focused preparation can make a significant difference in students’ performance.
A passion project is an independent initiative that reflects a student’s core interests and showcases the applicant's dedication and creativity. Whether it's starting a nonprofit, conducting independent research, creating a blog, or launching a community service project, a strong passion project should highlight students' commitment to their interests and ability to make a meaningful impact in their communities.
Summer is the perfect time to either start or significantly scale a passion project. Students should focus on setting clear goals, planning their activities, and documenting their progress. This project can provide rich content for their personal statement, supplemental essays, and interviews, illustrating their unique strengths and interests to admissions officers.
For students who have not yet done so, summer is an excellent time to request letters of recommendation. Students should identify the teachers, coaches, or mentors who can speak positively about their abilities and character. Reaching out to recommenders early to discuss college plans and expressing why they value their recommendation will allow recommenders to craft thoughtful letters that reflect students’ strengths and contributions.
Additionally, students should use the summer to prepare a concise packet of information for each recommender, including their resume, a list of their achievements, and any specific points they would like their recommender to highlight. Providing this information can help recommenders write a more personalized and detailed letter.
Summer is the perfect time to make progress on college applications. Students who wait until the fall must juggle the stress of sports, extracurricular activities, volunteering, and earning good grades in school, as first semester grades are often considered in the application review process. Focused summer preparation can allow students to make significant progress ahead of time, write quality essays, prepare cohesive applications, and be less stressed come fall.
There’s a widespread understanding that managing corporate culture is key to business success. Yet few companies articulate their culture in such a way that the words become an organizational reality that molds employee behavior as intended.
All too often a culture is described as a set of anodyne norms, principles, or values, which do not offer decision-makers guidance on how to make difficult choices when faced with conflicting but equally defensible courses of action.
The trick to making a desired culture come alive is to debate and articulate it using dilemmas. If you identify the tough dilemmas your employees routinely face and clearly state how they should be resolved—“In this company, when we come across this dilemma, we turn left”—then your desired culture will take root and influence the behavior of the team.
To develop a culture that works, follow six rules: Ground your culture in the dilemmas you are likely to confront, dilemma-test your values, communicate your values in colorful terms, hire people who fit, let culture drive strategy, and know when to pull back from a value statement.
Start by thinking about the dilemmas your people will face.

At the beginning of my career, I worked for the health-care-software specialist HBOC. One day, a woman from human resources came into the cafeteria with a roll of tape and began sticking posters on the walls. They proclaimed in royal blue the company’s values: “Transparency, Respect, Integrity, Honesty.” The next day we received wallet-sized plastic cards with the same words and were asked to memorize them so that we could incorporate them into our actions. The following year, when management was indicted on 17 counts of conspiracy and fraud, we learned what the company’s values really were.
Researchers say physical and mental health, as well as access to jobs, healthy food, and health care must be considered when making transportation decisions
Johns Hopkins researchers, lawmakers, and government officials met on June 17 at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health to discuss evidence-based approaches to make both climate health and human health a pivotal part of national transportation infrastructure decisions.
“Transportation is the number one producer of greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S.,” said Shima Hamidi , director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Climate-Smart Transportation. “It’s just going to get worse unless we can come up with actionable research—research that is ready to be implemented, ready to be translated into changes in policy and practice.”
Researchers also stressed that physical and mental health, as well as access to jobs, healthy food, and health care must be considered when making transportation decisions: “Clearly human health and transportation intersect,” said Ed Schlesinger, dean of the Whiting School of Engineering and moderator of the roundtable discussion.
Topics of discussion also included:
Robert Hampshire, deputy assistant secretary for research and technology and chief science officer at the U.S. Department of Transportation, noted that the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure law has spurred “one of the biggest buildouts of physical infrastructure to improve communities.”
“We really are, on the research and technology side, making sure that we’re using the best evidence that we have to do that, particularly on the resilience and climate side,” Hampshire said.
He and Gretchen Goldman, climate change research and technology director in DOT’s Office of Research and Technology, noted that the Biden-Harris administration is eager for input from researchers on the best projects that will advance transportation, climate, and health goals forward in ways that are mindful of their many intersections.
Keshia Pollack Porter , chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management , said it’s important to ask questions when considering projects to ensure a health equity lens is applied.
“Whether we’re thinking about where to put charging stations for EVs or even strategies related to the Key Bridge [collapse], how do we think in advance about how those strategies ... advance health equity and not harm health?”
The discussion highlighted the importance of collaboration across fields and with affected communities.
“It’s a multi-player, multi-objective problem, and so the only way you [solve that] in a way that is equitable and robust is if you have everyone together,” said Ben Zaitchik , a professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences at Johns Hopkins University.
The Center for Climate-Smart Transportation launched in 2023 with a $10 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation as a consortium of six institutions including Johns Hopkins University , Massachusetts Institute of Technology, University of Texas at Austin , University of Utah , Morgan State University (MSU) , and Diné College .
