For students, learning to tell time can be difficult. But you can teach students to tell time in hours and half-hours by following this step-by-step procedure.

Depending on when you teach math during the day, it would be helpful to have a digital clock sound an alarm when math class begins. If your math class begins on the hour or the half hour, even better!

Step-by-Step Procedure

• If you know your students are shaky on time concepts, it’s best to start this lesson with a discussion of morning, afternoon, and night. When do you get up? When do you brush your teeth? When do you get on the bus for school? When do we do our reading lessons? Have students put these into the appropriate categories of morning, afternoon, and night.
• Tell students that next we are going to get a little more specific. There are special times of day that we do things, and the clock shows us when. Show them the analog clock (the toy or the classroom clock) and the digital clock.
• Set the time on the analog clock for 3:00. First, draw their attention to the digital clock. The number(s) before the colon (:) describe the hours, and the numbers after : describe the minutes. So for 3:00, the time is exactly 3 o’clock and no extra minutes.
• Then draw their attention to the analog clock. Tell them that this clock can also show the time. The short hand shows the same thing as the number(s) before the : on the digital clock—the hours.
• Show them how the long hand on the analog clock moves faster than the short hand—it is moving by minutes. When it is at 0 minutes, it will be right up at the top, by the 12. This is a hard concept for kids to understand, so have students come up and make the long hand move quickly around the circle to reach the 12 and zero minutes several times.
• Have students stand up and use their arms as hands on a clock. Have them use one arm to show where the long clock hand will be when it is at zero minutes. Their hands should be straight up above their heads. Just like they did in Step 5, have them move this hand rapidly around an imaginary circle to represent what the minute hand does.
• Then have them imitate the 3:00 short hand. Using their unused arm, have them put this out to the side so that they are imitating the hands of the clock. Repeat with 6:00 (do the analog clock first) then 9:00, then 12:00. Both arms should be straight above their heads for 12:00.
• Change the digital clock to be 3:30. Show what this looks like on the analog clock. Have students use their bodies to imitate 3:30, then 6:30, then 9:30.
• For the remainder of the class period, or at the introduction of the next class period, ask for volunteers to come up to the front of the class and make a time with their bodies for other students to guess.

Homework/Assessment

Have students go home and discuss with their parents the times (to the nearest hour and half hour) that they do at least three important things during the day. They should write these down on paper in the correct digital format. Parents should sign the paper indicating that they have had these discussions with their child.

Take anecdotal notes on students as they complete Step 9 of the lesson. Those students who are still struggling with the representation of hours and half hours can receive some extra practice with another student or with you.

What’s the Right Amount of Homework?

Decades of research show that homework has some benefits, especially for students in middle and high school—but there are risks to assigning too much.

Many teachers and parents believe that homework helps students build study skills and review concepts learned in class. Others see homework as disruptive and unnecessary, leading to burnout and turning kids off to school. Decades of research show that the issue is more nuanced and complex than most people think: Homework is beneficial, but only to a degree. Students in high school gain the most, while younger kids benefit much less.

The National PTA and the National Education Association support the “ 10-minute homework guideline ”—a nightly 10 minutes of homework per grade level. But many teachers and parents are quick to point out that what matters is the quality of the homework assigned and how well it meets students’ needs, not the amount of time spent on it.

The guideline doesn’t account for students who may need to spend more—or less—time on assignments. In class, teachers can make adjustments to support struggling students, but at home, an assignment that takes one student 30 minutes to complete may take another twice as much time—often for reasons beyond their control. And homework can widen the achievement gap, putting students from low-income households and students with learning disabilities at a disadvantage.

However, the 10-minute guideline is useful in setting a limit: When kids spend too much time on homework, there are real consequences to consider.

Small Benefits for Elementary Students

As young children begin school, the focus should be on cultivating a love of learning, and assigning too much homework can undermine that goal. And young students often don’t have the study skills to benefit fully from homework, so it may be a poor use of time (Cooper, 1989 ; Cooper et al., 2006 ; Marzano & Pickering, 2007 ). A more effective activity may be nightly reading, especially if parents are involved. The benefits of reading are clear: If students aren’t proficient readers by the end of third grade, they’re less likely to succeed academically and graduate from high school (Fiester, 2013 ).

For second-grade teacher Jacqueline Fiorentino, the minor benefits of homework did not outweigh the potential drawback of turning young children against school at an early age, so she experimented with dropping mandatory homework. “Something surprising happened: They started doing more work at home,” Fiorentino writes . “This inspiring group of 8-year-olds used their newfound free time to explore subjects and topics of interest to them.” She encouraged her students to read at home and offered optional homework to extend classroom lessons and help them review material.

Moderate Benefits for Middle School Students

As students mature and develop the study skills necessary to delve deeply into a topic—and to retain what they learn—they also benefit more from homework. Nightly assignments can help prepare them for scholarly work, and research shows that homework can have moderate benefits for middle school students (Cooper et al., 2006 ). Recent research also shows that online math homework, which can be designed to adapt to students’ levels of understanding, can significantly boost test scores (Roschelle et al., 2016 ).

There are risks to assigning too much, however: A 2015 study found that when middle school students were assigned more than 90 to 100 minutes of daily homework, their math and science test scores began to decline (Fernández-Alonso, Suárez-Álvarez, & Muñiz, 2015 ). Crossing that upper limit can drain student motivation and focus. The researchers recommend that “homework should present a certain level of challenge or difficulty, without being so challenging that it discourages effort.” Teachers should avoid low-effort, repetitive assignments, and assign homework “with the aim of instilling work habits and promoting autonomous, self-directed learning.”

In other words, it’s the quality of homework that matters, not the quantity. Brian Sztabnik, a veteran middle and high school English teacher, suggests that teachers take a step back and ask themselves these five questions :

• How long will it take to complete?
• Have all learners been considered?
• Will an assignment encourage future success?
• Will an assignment place material in a context the classroom cannot?
• Does an assignment offer support when a teacher is not there?

More Benefits for High School Students, but Risks as Well

By the time they reach high school, students should be well on their way to becoming independent learners, so homework does provide a boost to learning at this age, as long as it isn’t overwhelming (Cooper et al., 2006 ; Marzano & Pickering, 2007 ). When students spend too much time on homework—more than two hours each night—it takes up valuable time to rest and spend time with family and friends. A 2013 study found that high school students can experience serious mental and physical health problems, from higher stress levels to sleep deprivation, when assigned too much homework (Galloway, Conner, & Pope, 2013 ).

Homework in high school should always relate to the lesson and be doable without any assistance, and feedback should be clear and explicit.

Teachers should also keep in mind that not all students have equal opportunities to finish their homework at home, so incomplete homework may not be a true reflection of their learning—it may be more a result of issues they face outside of school. They may be hindered by issues such as lack of a quiet space at home, resources such as a computer or broadband connectivity, or parental support (OECD, 2014 ). In such cases, giving low homework scores may be unfair.

Since the quantities of time discussed here are totals, teachers in middle and high school should be aware of how much homework other teachers are assigning. It may seem reasonable to assign 30 minutes of daily homework, but across six subjects, that’s three hours—far above a reasonable amount even for a high school senior. Psychologist Maurice Elias sees this as a common mistake: Individual teachers create homework policies that in aggregate can overwhelm students. He suggests that teachers work together to develop a school-wide homework policy and make it a key topic of back-to-school night and the first parent-teacher conferences of the school year.

Parents Play a Key Role

Homework can be a powerful tool to help parents become more involved in their child’s learning (Walker et al., 2004 ). It can provide insights into a child’s strengths and interests, and can also encourage conversations about a child’s life at school. If a parent has positive attitudes toward homework, their children are more likely to share those same values, promoting academic success.

But it’s also possible for parents to be overbearing, putting too much emphasis on test scores or grades, which can be disruptive for children (Madjar, Shklar, & Moshe, 2015 ). Parents should avoid being overly intrusive or controlling—students report feeling less motivated to learn when they don’t have enough space and autonomy to do their homework (Orkin, May, & Wolf, 2017 ; Patall, Cooper, & Robinson, 2008 ; Silinskas & Kikas, 2017 ). So while homework can encourage parents to be more involved with their kids, it’s important to not make it a source of conflict.

Overview of Grade

In grade 1, instructional time focuses on 4 critical areas:

• Developing an understanding of addition and subtraction: The kids learn to represent and solve addition and subtraction word problems within 20. They understand the relationship between addition and subtraction. They also work with addition and subtraction equation to find the missing whole number in the equation.
• Developing an understanding of place value system: The kids learn to count to 120, starting from any number less than 120. They understand place value system and are able to compare two-digit numbers based on the meaning of tens and one digits. They are taught to add/subtract the multiples to 10 in the range 10-90.
• Developing an understanding of linear measurement: The kids learn to measure length indirectly and by iterating length units. They are able to tell and write time in hours and half hours using analog and digital clocks. They are also expected to organize, represent and interpret data with questions like how many total, how many in each category or how many few or more.
• Recognizing attributes of shapes: The kids distinguish between defining attributes and non-defining attributes of shapes. They are taught to partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares.

Overview of Topic

Telling time is a very important concept to be learned in early school years. Knowing about time helps kids in several ways. They learn about time table or timetables chart in their school that makes them understand how the things are planned according to the time. The importance of time does not diminish from school years to work years. The latest introduction of ‘work hours calculator’ in the offices, explains adults the importance of time. It is important to calculate work hours or calculate time card because it lets a person understand how effectively he/she works. Thus, it is important to introduce this skill in the early childhood years.

Benefits of Learning through Math Games

Many children find mathematics boring and uninteresting.  Learning math through games can change child’s negative attitude towards math. There are many math learning games that can easily be adapted in the classroom or at home. One can find math games and activity for kids that require little or no equipment to make math concepts interesting. For example, puzzle games, logic puzzles require only a sheet of paper. There are many interactive sites for education that offer free puzzle games and other learning games for kids.

The surveys have shown that the introduction of games in mathematics classroom has proved beneficial for the kids. The time for learning math should have a balanced mix of classroom learning and learning through games. Many educational websites have come up in the market that offers math riddles, a math dictionary, math quiz like math minutes. There are websites that are well-designed according to the state curriculum. One can find websites that are designed keeping in mind the grade wise curriculum or homeschooling curriculum. Such learning tools make even the most difficult topics of mathematics simpler. For example, the kids can learn time measurement by playing clock games over the internet. Once they get fluent in the skills to tell time date, they can practice telling time worksheets or play with analog clock online to master the concept.

Progression of Topic Time with Grades

Grade 1: The kids’ relate their understanding of partitioning circles to an analog clock. They see an analog clock as a circle partitioned into 12 equal parts. They learn about the hour hand and minute hand. They are able to tell time to the hour and to the half hour on an analog clock and digital clock. The kids’ get familiar with the vocabulary like 3 o’ clock and half past 3. They also are able to discriminate between time to the hour and time to the half hour. They learn about the position of a minute and hour hand.

Grade 2: The kids’ understanding of partitioning the circle into halves and quarters help them understand the concept of quarter hours. They understand that an analog time clock can be divided into four equal quarters. They learn about the terminologies like half past 9, quarter to 9, quarter past 9 etc. The kids use skip-counting to count by fives. They relate 60 minutes to 1 hour, 30 minutes to a half hour and 15 minutes to a quarter hour. For example, they relate half past 4 with 4:30, 4:15 with quarter past 4 and 4:45 with a quarter to 5. They relate numbers on the face of the clock with the intervals of 5 and use this understanding to tell time to the nearest 5 minutes. The kids also learn about a.m. and p.m. They also solve problems based on elapsed time using their subtraction skills.

Grade 3: The kids learn to tell time to the nearest minute on analog and digital clocks. They use number line as a tool to count minutes within an hour. The kids use both clock and a number line to solve telling time worksheets involving addition and subtraction of intervals of minutes. The kids at this stage no longer need hours and minutes calculator or time hour calculator.

Grade 4: The kids use four operations to solve word problems involving intervals of time. These problems also involve conversions. They are expected to convert minutes to hours or vice versa to solve problems.

Topic Overview

Understanding an analog time clock.

The kids visualize a circular analog clock as a circle partitioned into 12 equal parts. They notice that the equal parts are numbered from 1 to 12. The kids gain familiarity with the three hands of the clock. They learn that the hour hand is shorter and thicker, the minute hand is longer and thin and the second hand is very thin and long. Grade 1 learning only focuses on the hour hand and the minute hand. The kids learn about the rotation of the two hands. They learn that both hands of the clock keep moving, minute hand moving faster and hour hand moving faster.

Telling Time to Hour

• Question Time: The kids at this stage are expected to tell time to the hour. They should also be able to move clock hands to show a particular time.

The kids are expected to solve time worksheets that have problems like these:

• Write the time shown on the clock?

• Draw hour and minute hands on the clock to show 4 o’ clock.

Telling time to Half hour

• Understanding half hour: The kids identify two half-circles on the circular analog clock. This serves as a foundation for understanding the half hour. The kids understand when the minute hand moves halfway from 12 to 6, it is a half hour. They count by 5’s to 30 to realize that clocks have two 30-minutes which make 1 hour. They connect this understanding to realize that half hour has 30 minutes. They learn to read time to half hour in different ways like half past 3 and three hours and thirty minutes. They also learn depiction of time on digital clocks.  Half-past three on digital clocks will look like this 3:30. 
• The position of the hour hand and minute hand: The kids understand that the hour hand and minute hand moves every second. They realize that when the minute hand covers half of the way, the hour hand points in the middle of the two numbers. As shown on the clock above, the hour hand is between 3 and 4 when the minute hand is at 6.  
• Question Time: The kids at this stage are expected to tell time to the half hour. They should be able to understand the position of the hour hand pertaining to the minute hand.
• What time is shown by the clock?
• Draw hour and minute hands on the clock to show 4:30.

Application of calculating time to the hour and half hour

The kids apply their understanding to solve challenging math problems involving time. By the end of grade 1, the kids are expected to solve challenging math worksheets with questions like:

• Jacob went for shopping at 1 o’ clock. He returned home after 2 hours. At what time did Jacob return home?
• Nemo started her homework at 3:30. She finished it 5:30. How much time did she take to complete her homework?

First Grade Homework For the Entire Year

I have one template per month and then change the date and wording each week!

Behind the weekly newsletter I send home different homework pages based on all sorts of factors. I like having options!!!! I made at least one page for each topic I teach throughout the year. Also, I have never been a fan of longgggg homework. I find that it is too overwhelming and I think students just need *quick* reinforcing practice each night so that played a big role in the way I set up my homework. You can see a little more about the homework pages below.

Again, I like having options and I know most teachers do too! Based on the skills I’m teaching that week, a student’s ability level, parent involvement, I will send home what I believe to be a reasonable HW packet for the week. You can do the same for your students!
