"I do think an extensive cover letter is needed at this level — as well as for any senior leadership post at the university," Licari told The Leaf-Chronicle. 

"These are big, important decisions for a campus, and the more information you as a candidate can provide, the better." 

Beyond the required qualifications, he said the APSU community wanted to understand his leadership style, what motivated him as a candidate, how his experiences shaped him as a leader and more. 

Coupled with this resume — which included extensive leadership experience at Indiana State University — references and in-person interviews last week on campus, Licari earned the presidential search committee's nomination, which on Monday afternoon was approved by APSU's Board of Trustees. 

Licari said his wife, Kirsten, is his in-house wordsmith. A former copy editor, she read his draft, helping him refine it. 

And now, they are planning to move to Clarksville, Tennessee's fifth-largest city, which is also one of the nation's fastest-growing metropolitan areas.   

Licari comes to Clarksville from Terre Haute, Indiana, where he has served as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs at ISU.

Cover to cover: The Class of 2024’s four years at Tufts, reviewed

Editor’s note: The 2020–21, 2021–22 and 2022–23 recaps in this article are reprinted from the 2023 Commencement Issue  of the Daily, with light edits.

The Class of 2024’s first year on the Hill began unconventionally, with Tufts’ academics and activities adapted to a hybrid model in adherence with COVID-19 public health guidelines. While much of the student body was present on-campus through the year, some opted to take classes virtually.

Tufts implemented a number of measures to keep the community healthy, including routine testing for students, pooled testing  that extended to Somerville and Medford residents and the creation of The Mods, quarantine housing for students who tested positive for COVID-19 and their close contacts.

Online programming allowed for a robust lineup of speakers through Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life’s Distinguished Speaker Series. Then- Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi , Dr. Anthony Fauci , voting rights activist and former gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams  and author Ijeoma Oluo  were only a few of the speakers to visit Tufts virtually in the 2020 – 21 school year.

The Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion was renamed  as part of a larger restructuring effort. This change additionally welcomed three new full-time staffing positions.

The year was also marked by student activism and political engagement. Members of the Tufts community marched in support of the Black Lives Matter movement ,  formed  new campus organizations focused on anti-racism and reevaluated  the lack of representation in departmental curricula. This came after a summer of protests and a national reckoning with police brutality and white supremacy in the wake of the murder of George Floyd in May 2020. Student organizations also phone-banked , assisted with voter registration  and worked at the polls   leading up to the presidential election in November.

Shortly after Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election was announced, Tufts faced challenges within its own student government when the Tufts Community Union Judiciary suspended  the Senate Executive Board and Elections Commission in November.

The Judiciary believed that the Senate Executive Board and ECOM were planning to appoint students to vacant Senate seats — a violation of the TCU Constitution. The Judiciary then revoked  its suspension after less than 24 hours, having resolved what had been a miscommunication between the three branches.

TCU also held a special election  at the end of November, which included referenda by Tufts Students for Justice in Palestine and Tufts for a Racially Equitable Endowment, both of which passed. Although 42% of the student body voted — the highest turnout for a special election in Tufts’ history — the university announced  that it had no plans to take action on either referendum.

Many students left campus early in fall 2020, with Tufts asking those who traveled for Thanksgiving to remain home and complete classes virtually. Students did not return to campus until late January for the spring semester, which began Feb. 1. Most study abroad programs were suspended  and spring break was condensed  into a three day weekend, in part due to traveling risks posed by COVID-19.

Tufts and its surrounding communities were affected by multiple acts of hate early in 2021. Many reacted  to the insurrection at the Capitol that took place on Jan. 6, as well as the involvement of Jessica Turner, a member of the Somerville Affordable Housing Trust Fund.

The university shared  the results of an investigation in February regarding a September incident involving Tufts University Police Department’s response to three women of color hanging a mask on the Jumbo statue as part of a university-sponsored effort to promote JumboVote and Healthy@Tufts. The investigation concluded that discrimination did not factor into the incident.

This announcement came only days before two Zoom bombing incidents — one at a diversity, equity and inclusion event — occurred back to back. Former University President Anthony Monaco subsequently announced the creation of Bias Education Response Teams  in March, which are designed to address the impact of hateful and discriminatory acts, as well as provide support to the community.

The Board of Trustees voted  to ban direct investments in 120 coal and tar sands companies, which was announced in a Feb. 10 email to the community. However, many environmental organizations on campus remained unsatisfied with the decision, citing a lack of divestment in current holdings.

Monaco also shared the recommendations  of five workstreams created in July 2020 as part of the university’s commitment to becoming an anti-racist institution in a Feb. 17 email. The workstreams — Institutional Audit and Targeted Action, Campus Safety and Policing, Public Art, Compositional Diversity and Equity and Inclusion — were composed of faculty, staff and students.

The Class of 2024 arrived on campus in time to witness the monumental reform and restructuring of Greek life  on campus as health protocols prevented traditional rush. Following discussions prompted by the online account “Abolish Greek Life at Tufts” over the summer, all members of Alpha Phi and the majority of members in Chi Omega disaffiliated from their national chapters, creating local sororities The Ivy and Thalia, respectively. New members were welcomed through virtual recruitment in the spring.

The university announced  that it would close the Confucius Institute in March. The decision came after months of weekly protests from the local Tibetan, Uighur and Hong Kong communities.

A record-low 11% of students were offered admission  to the Class of 2025, and the accepted students comprised the most ethnically and racially diverse undergraduate class in Tufts history and are part of the first class that applied under the university’s new test-optional policy.

Former TCU President Amma Agyei (E‘22) made history  in April as the first Black woman elected to the TCU presidency. Agyei won over Tim Leong (LA‘22), who served as TCU vice president.

For the second year in a row, the university planned a virtual Senior Week and Commencement, despite concerns voiced  by the senior class. Tufts welcomed civil rights lawyer and author Bryan Stevenson to deliver the 2021 commencement address on May 23.

The Class of 2024’s second year at Tufts saw the return of majority in-person classes, extracurricular activities and study abroad programs , though new variants of COVID-19 left many pandemic guidelines in place, like masking indoors and routine testing.

With the newly relaxed public health protocols, the Class of 2024 was finally able to gather together for its illumination ceremony  — the candlelit tradition that normally takes place during the first weeks of new student orientation.

To facilitate a return to in-person activities, the university required that all students arrive at Tufts fully vaccinated, assisting international students  with vaccinations if they were not yet available in their home countries.

However, not all students were able to live on campus. Approximately 100 first-year students were assigned housing  at the Hyatt Place in Medford.

The first week of academic classes was marked by an act of hate. A student reported the removal of a mezuzah  — a traditional Jewish symbol — from their doorpost in early September. Later that month, another mezuzah was stolen, and Black Lives Matter posters were found purposefully torn down on campus.

The beginning of the academic year saw a number of changes in leadership, with the arrival of Dayna Cunningham  as the new dean of the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life, Kyongbum Lee  as the interim dean of the School of Engineering and Yolanda Smith  as executive director of public safety.

Tufts mourned the passing of community members in the fall and spring, including students Madie Nicpon ‘23  and Cher Xiong ‘24 ; Margaret Rose Vendryres , who was the incoming dean of the School of the Museum of Fine Arts; Danielle Abrams , professor of the practice in the performance department at the SMFA; and Sheldon Krimsky , the Lenore Stern professor of humanities and social sciences in the Department of Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning.

Tufts students rallied around local campaigns leading up to the 2021 mayoral elections in Medford, Somerville  and Boston on Nov. 2. Somerville saw the election of Katjana Ballantyne, its first new mayor in 18 years, while Boston elected Michelle Wu, who is the first woman  and first person of color to hold the position in the city’s history.

The university announced its intent to establish an Indigenous student identity center  under the Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion in November, hiring Vernon Miller  as its director in February. In April, the community voted in favor of a referendum proposed by the Tufts Community Union to add an Indigenous community senator seat to its organization.

After years of construction, the Joyce Cummings Center finally opened its doors  to students in late November. The six-story building, for which planning began in 2015, houses the departments of computer science, economics and mathematics, and is regularly used to host large-scale student gatherings.

The fall semester was cut slightly short  when a December outbreak of the omicron variant of COVID-19 led the university to move all finals online after Dec. 17. The first three days of the spring semester were held remotely  due to high caseloads in January.

In February, Monaco announced  his intent to step down as university president during the summer of 2023, marking the end of a 12-year tenure. Tufts later announced that Sunil Kumar , formerly of Johns Hopkins, would move into Gifford House and take the reins of the presidency from Monaco.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, students rallied  to support Ukraine by protesting, compiling resources on the war and putting on a concert to raise money for medical aid to the country.

Tufts saw yet another increase in the number of applications  and offered admission to a record-low  9.7% of applicants to the Class of 2026. To compensate for a lack of housing for these incoming first-year students, the university announced its intent to build temporary, dorm-like structures  in place of The Mods on the tennis courts on Professors Row.

The Working Group on TUPD Arming announced its recommendation on March 29 that TUPD alter its arming status to a “ hybrid model ,” comprising a combination of armed officers and unarmed security professionals. This announcement came a year after five workstreams released report recommendations on how the university can become an anti-racist institution.

The School of Medicine announced plans to open a new Center for Black Maternal Health and Reproductive Justice   on April 8. The center works to address and combat structural racism experienced in health care fields.

The Class of 2024 finally got to experience Spring Fling  — Tufts’ first since 2019 — featuring performances from Tufts student Ella Jane, BIA and Aminé. Senior week also featured in-person events for the first time in three years.

The Class of 2022 celebrated Commencement on May 22, while the Class of 2020 had an in-person ceremony on May 27. Award-winning scholar Erika Lee  (LA‘91) delivered the commencement address for the Class of 2022, while Neil Blumenthal  (LA‘02), co-founder and co-CEO of the eyeglasses company Warby Parker, delivered the commencement address for the Class of 2020.

Students returned to campus in fall 2022 without COVID-19  as a major concern for most community members. Mask mandates  were nixed  and testing requirements abandoned as, for the first time since the Class of 2024 matriculated, students were able to gather without the looming possibility of a school-mandated, multiday isolation.

To that end, the university eliminated the units of modular  quarantine housing that for two years sat atop the varsity tennis team’s former home, replacing them with an archipelago of first-year housing stock. The modular-style dorms, which accommodate 150 first-years, were branded as “The Court at Professors Row.” As the university plows forward in its plan to grow enrollment , The Court will remain a standard among other, more traditional first-year living arrangements — but likely only until 2025, when the university is projected to finish construction of a multi-story residence hall  on Boston Avenue.

The campus’ expansion was a major theme during the Class of 2023’s time at Tufts.

Following years of construction and myriad delays, the MBTA’s Green Line Extension  opened its doors on the final day of classes in December. Dozens of students packed the station before dawn to get a seat on the first train as it rolled toward East Somerville and into downtown Boston. Senators Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey — plus former Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker — headlined the station’s long-awaited ribbon-cutting ceremony  later that morning, in a celebration largely symbolic of the university’s geographic expansion over the last decade.

Tufts also broke ground on — and later opened — a new baseball field  named after former provost and professor emeritus Sol Gittleman. Renovations are also underway  at Eaton Hall, the historic quad-facing academic building that most recently housed departments like religion, sociology and anthropology.

The Class of 2024’s third year was also marked by a string of racist and antisemitic incidents in a pattern that has grown familiar to the community. A club sports team was suspended and faced with an investigation  by the university after some of its members were allegedly involved in an antisemitic incident at a competition off campus. And in April, racial slurs  sent via a chat box on Zoom interrupted a Solomont Speaker series event with the rapper Dee-1. Monaco condemned both incidents and reiterated the university’s commitment to anti-racism and the fight against antisemitism.

Attacks against Tufts’ work to fight racism continued during finals week  in the fall, when seven bomb threats were sent to a flurry of university departments from an unknown emailer over the course of nine days. The threats, listing “anti white racism” as one motivator, prompted evacuations from residence halls, the Campus Center, Dowling Hall and a spate of academic buildings, pushing finals online .

Tufts’ upper leadership faced criticism this year after a pair of Daily investigations uncovered a series of high-level departures and a culture in two administrative departments that former staffers described as toxic. The diversity office opened the academic year  with a third of its positions empty after two of its chief officers quietly departed in August. Their departures followed a restructuring in the provost’s office — which oversees the university’s diversity work — and an alleged consolidation of administrative power.

The admissions office, too, was reported to be under investigation  by an outside law firm following current and former staffer allegations of racist and antisemitic behavior on the part of the dean, JT Duck. The investigation came as the attack on affirmative action  reached the Supreme Court and as the university pledged its support  for Harvard and the University of North Carolina in their ongoing legal battle against the group Students for Fair Admissions. Deans Glaser and Lee of the Schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering later shared  that a thorough internal investigation into the Tufts admissions office found no evidence of discrimination by Duck.

Tufts resident assistants announced their intention to unionize in November. After the administration declined  to voluntarily recognize the United Labor of Tufts Resident Assistants, RAs voted 99–3  with 72% turnout to form a union. ULTRA engaged in negotiations with the university over the course of the spring semester, but would not ink a contract until the following year.

It was another record-breaking year for undergraduate admissions, when Tufts delivered offers  to 9.5% of applicants to the Class of 2027, the lowest acceptance rate on record. The pool was historically diverse and represented nearly a 50% spike in applications from 2020, when the Class of 2024 was admitted.

Also in the 2022 – 23 school year, Kyongbum Lee  became the dean of the engineering school, Scheri Fultineer  took the helm of the SMFA and Howard Woolf  announced his retirement as ExCollege dean following 40 years in the office.

Spring Fling was headlined last year by the 2010s pop sensation Flo Rida, who arrived more than an hour late and after many students had already left the annual music festival. Flo Rida was preceded  on stage  by the DJ trio Cheat Codes, TikTok music star Charlie Curtis-Beard and the Tufts student band Fease .

The performances came a day after the Class of 2024’s Arielle Galinsky , the TCU Senate vice president, declared victory in the race for TCU Senate president. She succeeded Jaden Pena (LA‘23).

The final weeks of the Class of 2024’s junior year were marked by an end to the national COVID-19 emergency — and to the university’s vaccination requirement. The move represented the elimination of the last of Tufts’ major COVID-19 mitigation policies, which defined much of the graduating class’s tenure at Tufts.

At the 2023 Commencement ceremony — Monaco’s last as university president — United Nations Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed  delivered the keynote address. Mohammed is known for her work fighting climate change.

Monaco passed the presidential baton to Sunil Kumar  on July 1, 2023. Kumar is Tufts’ 14th president and the first person of color to fill the position. Before coming to Tufts, he served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs at Johns Hopkins University following stints at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and the Stanford University Graduate School of Business.

The Class of 2024’s final year began with a flurry of union organizing on campus. Amid contract negotiations with Tufts, the newly unionized undergraduate resident assistants went on strike  on first-year move-in day to demand that Tufts pay them a stipend. Weeks later, Tufts agreed to compensate the RAs with 80 meal swipes and a $1,425 stipend each semester.

On Sept. 25, the union voted by an overwhelming majority to sign its inaugural contract  with the university. The contract represents the culmination of seven months of negotiations and will be valid for three years.

Tufts Dining workers, represented by the labor union UNITE HERE Local 26, also won a major collective bargaining victory at the start of the school year. In September, they signed a new contract  with Tufts guaranteeing them a $9.92 increase to hourly wages to be rolled out over the next 4 ½ ye ars.

Unionized SMFA part-time lecturers reopened contract negotiations with Tufts in the fall, calling for pay parity  with part-time lecturers in the School of Arts and Sciences. SMFA Dean Sheri Fultineer announced  in October that those negotiations had concluded, without disclosing the terms.

Graduate students in the School of Arts and Sciences also raised their voices to demand higher pay and better benefits. Represented by Service Employees International Union Local 509, the grad students entered negotiations over — and subsequently signed — their next five-year contract. They staged a walkout at University President Sunil Kumar’s Oct. 6 inauguration ceremony to draw attention to their cause.

The Tufts community reacted  with shock and grief to Hamas’ deadly attack on Israeli civilians on Oct. 7. As Israel began a brutal campaign of bombing and ground invasions of Gaza, students staged a series of protests , walkouts , sit-ins  and die-ins  to call attention  to the mass killings of Palestinians.

At one protest outside Ballou Hall on Nov. 17, students alleged  that TUPD officers physically and verbally harassed them and made them feel unsafe. The protest ended with 18 students facing disciplinary violations and one losing their study abroad privileges for blocking the doors to Ballou in violation of university policy.

Eleven student groups founded the Coalition for Palestinian Liberation at Tufts  to call for an immediate ceasefire, now totaling over 40 member organizations.  The coalition also demanded that Kumar condemn the genocide in Gaza and that Tufts divest from Israel and end all partnerships with Israeli institutions.

In a series of messages to the university community, Kumar denounced the Hamas-led terrorist attacks, mourned the loss of Palestinian lives in Gaza and condemned all forms of antisemitism and Islamophobia. He affirmed students’ right to protest but cautioned  that “disruption cannot take the place of dialogue.”

The Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Jodi Kantor , Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell  and Congressman Maxwell Frost  were among the civic life leaders invited to campus for Tisch College’s fall Solomont Speaker Series .

Tisch College also welcomed hip-hop artist and activist David Augustine, known as Dee-1 , as its inaugural Artist/Scholar-in-Residence. In spring 2024, Augustine taught a course about the intersection of hip hop and social change.

Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences James M. Glaser announced  in December he will  depart Tufts this summer after 33 years. Glaser joined the Department of Political Science in 1991 and has served as dean since 2014. Bárbara Brizuela, dean of the A&S graduate school, will be the interim dean while the university searches for Glaser's replacement.

Pro-Palestinian activism continued into the spring semester as the Israel-Hamas war passed the 100-day mark and the death toll mounted. Calls for a ceasefire extended into Tufts’ host communities, with the Somerville  and Medford  city councils both passing ceasefire resolutions in February .

In March, the TCU Senate passed  three resolutions   proposed by CPLT calling on Kumar to recognize the genocide in Gaza, for the university to divest from Israeli companies and for it to stop selling Sabra products. A fourth resolution pressing the university to end approval for study abroad programs at universities in Israel did not pass. About 300 students came to the meeting to speak in favor of and against the resolutions. Afterward, students reported antisemitic, Islamophobic and anti-Arab remarks and actions made by their peers during the meeting.

Less than 12 hours after the vote, Kumar condemned  the resolutions and said that Tufts will maintain all of its business and academic relationships with Israeli institutions.

Later in the month, a group of Tufts students participated in the first-ever Jumbo Spring Break  — a five-day program with a civic engagement and community service focus. The students volunteered for Habitat for Humanity in Malden and met with Medford Mayor Breanna Lungo-Koehn, among other activities.

Tufts accepted 10% of applicants  to the Class of 2028, a slight increase from last year. It was the fourth year of Tufts’ six-year test-optional pilot program, and 60% of accepted students submitted test scores with their applications.

The Daily reported that the sticker price for the incoming class will surpass $92,000 , a record-breaking figure that includes tuition, housing and personal expenses like textbooks. Tufts will continue to meet 100% of students’ demonstrated financial need, and the university has earmarked more than $125 million for undergraduate financial aid in the 2025 fiscal year, representing a 4.7% increase from this past fiscal year.

On April 8 — one of the first truly sunny and warm days of the spring semester — hundreds of students gathered on President’s Lawn to admire the partial solar eclipse  through protective glasses and makeshift pinhole cameras. Many others traveled north to experience totality.

Jordin Sparks headlined the Class of 2024’s final Spring Fling  on April 20 with openers Tkay Maidza, Iyaz and student band Sunnydaze.

The 2024 – 25 TCU presidential election  was a tight three-way contest between juniors Krystal Mutebi, Joel Omolade and Mikayla Paquette. Omolade was temporarily disqualified  from the race by the Elections Commission for alleged campaign misconduct, but the TCU Judiciary quickly reversed the decision and allowed him to resume his campaign. Omolade ultimately won  the presidency with 54% of the vote. Fellow Class of 2025 senator Nessren Ourdyl will serve as vice president.

Tufts students set up a “ Gaza Solidarity Encampment ” on the Academic Quad in April, part of a nationwide surge in pro-Palestinian student activism. Universities around the country drew scrutiny for forcefully cracking down on their protesters and, in many cases, calling in the police to make arrests. Meanwhile at Tufts, under a no trespass warning and threats of suspension, the protesters deconstructed  their encampment and left voluntarily on May 3. They did not offer a public explanation for why the encampment came down, but said they had not negotiated an agreement with the university.

Professors of the practice of the SMFA, capping off a year of union activity, began negotiations  for a new collective contract with the university on April 24. If negotiations are successful, SMFA’s professors of the practice will join Tufts’ dining workers and resident assistants in securing higher working standards during the 2023–24 academic year.

Senior Saffiyah Coker  won the Wendell Phillips Award and will deliver an address to the senior class at Saturday’s Baccalaureate Ceremony.

Fiona Hill  will deliver the Commencement address on Sunday. Hill is the chancellor of Durham University and a former adviser to three U.S. presidents, specializing in Russian and European affairs.

UC alumna appointed interim senior vice president of External Relations and Communications

University of California President Michael V. Drake, M.D., has selected Meredith Vivian Turner to be interim senior vice president of External Relations and Communications at the UC Office of the President. The appointment was approved today (May 16, 2024) by the UC Board of Regents and effective May 17, 2024.

Turner succeeds Michael Reese, whose interim appointment as senior vice president concludes on June 30. Turner was selected after a competitive national recruitment process and will assume the role on an interim basis for one year or until the appointment of a permanent senior vice president.

An experienced government relations and communications leader, Turner brings a deep understanding of the public higher education landscape and extensive ties to the University of California. A graduate of UC Santa Cruz and former president of its alumni board, Turner has served in multiple roles at the UC Office of the President since 2016. She previously spent her career advocating for public higher education in California and empowering student voices through roles at the California State University system and the California State Senate.

“I am thrilled to see Meredith step into this important role, leading the external engagement and communications efforts at the Office of the President. I am confident that in the months ahead, she will prove to be a successful UC advocate and leader of the External Relations and Communications Division,” said President Drake. “Meredith brings deep experience and expertise to this role. Turner’s portfolio will include all University-wide internal and external communications and outreach, state and federal governmental relations, and advancement and alumni relations in support of UC’s tripartite mission of education, research and public service.

Turner is currently the chief of staff of External Relations and Communications at the Office of the President, where she serves as a strategic thought partner to the SVP and other senior leadership, drives divisional communications and governmental relations priorities, leads the division’s work with the Board of Regents, and cultivates influential external partnerships. Turner’s previous work in UC’s Office of State Governmental Relations enhanced the university’s relationships with state policymakers and transformed the university’s advocacy programs.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve the University of California in such an impactful role,” said Turner. “I know first-hand the transformative power of a UC education, and I look forward to working with a talented team and so many UC advocates on elevating the University's positive impact on California communities.”

Prior to her time at UC, Turner held several roles with the Cal State Student Association at the CSU Chancellor’s Office, elevating its state and federal governmental relations function into a dynamic, high touch-advocacy model. Turner also served as communications manager for then-State Senator Lou Correa and has worked and volunteered on several local, state and national campaigns.

Turner has volunteered on the UC Santa Cruz Alumni Board since 2016, holding leadership positions as vice president of administration, president, and currently as the immediate past president. She served as an ex-officio trustee on the UC Santa Cruz Foundation Board from 2020–2022.

Turner is the recipient of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s (CASE) Edwin Crawford Award for Innovation, as well as several CASE awards for her advocacy work at UC and CSU. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history from UC Santa Cruz and a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Southern California.

A student organization is a voluntary special interest group organized for educational, social, recreational, and service purposes and comprised of its members. Student organizations are separate legal entities from the University of Iowa and legally are not treated the same as University departments or units. Student organizations can exist whether or not the University endorses them pursuant to this policy. Unless otherwise denoted hereafter, the use of the term “student organization” shall include sports clubs registered by Recreational Services.

Student organizations are an important link in the co-curricular activities of the University of Iowa. They play an important role in developing student leadership and providing a quality campus environment. As such, the University encourages the formation of student organizations around the areas of interests of its students, within the limits necessary to accommodate academic needs and ensure public safety.

I. Registration of Student Organizations

The University of Iowa, through the Vice President for Student Life (hereinafter, "vice president"), has delegated the responsibilities and obligations of registering student organizations to the Student Organization Review Committee (i.e., on behalf Leadership & Engagement and Recreational Services) (SORC) and to deans of academic colleges. The SORC is a team of students and staff that determines the approval or denial of the application for registration. Registration of a student organization by the University does not constitute an endorsement of its program or its purposes, but is merely a charter to exist.

Organizations must abide by all local, state, and federal laws. An organization’s goals, objectives, and activities must not deviate from established University policies and procedures. Because participation in student organizations may enhance a student’s educational experience and the University deems this important to our students’ success, registered organizations are entitled to certain privileges and benefits.

The University shall not deny benefits or privileges available to student organizations based on the viewpoint of a student organization or the expression of the viewpoint by the student organization or its members, as protected by the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. In addition, the University shall not deny any benefit or privilege to a student organization based on the student organization's requirement that the leaders of the student organization agree to and support its beliefs, as those beliefs are interpreted and applied by the student organization, and to further its mission.

  • In order to exercise the privileges accorded to registered student organizations, students interested in starting a new registered student organization must first write a constitution for the potential student organization and hold a Pre-registration meeting with the appropriate Leadership & Engagement staff, BEFORE filing the New Organization Registration Form online through the University of Iowa student organization platform. This form includes organizational information and the organization’s Constitution and Bylaws. Upon receiving this information, the Leadership & Engagement staff will review it and submit it to the Student Organization Review Committee (SORC) for consideration. If approved for registration, the SORC will assign the appropriate registration tier (see below).
  • Any group or organization which consists of and maintains at least 80 percent University students, whose purposes are consistent with the educational objectives of the University, and do not violate local, state or federal law, is eligible for registration by the University. To start a new registered student organization, the organization must consist of and maintain at least five (5) individuals as members, of which four (4) must be currently enrolled UI students.
  • Membership and Leadership. It is the policy of the University that all registered student organizations be able to exercise free choice of members on the basis of their merits as individuals without restriction in accordance with the University Policy on Human Rights. The University acknowledges the interests of students to organize and associate with like-minded students, therefore any individual who subscribes to the goals and beliefs of a student organization may participate in and become a member of the organization.

Membership and participation in the organization must be open to all students without regard to race, creed, color, religion, national origin, age, sex (unless the organization is exempt under Title IX), pregnancy, disability, genetic information, status as a U.S. veteran, service in the U.S. military, sexual orientation, gender identity, associational preferences, or any other classification that deprives the person of consideration as an individual. The organization will guarantee that equal opportunity and equal access to membership, programming, facilities, and benefits shall be open to all persons.

The University shall not deny any benefit or privilege to a student organization based on the student organization’s requirement that the leaders of the student organization agree to and support its beliefs, as those beliefs are interpreted and applied by the student organization, and to further its mission.

The University will not investigate complaints related to student organization leadership selection processes or final leadership selection by organizations that select their leaders on the basis of a commitment to a set of beliefs or affirmations. These selection processes are defined and enforced by individual student organizations and the university shall respect the organization’s decision-making process.

Membership in a student organization must be composed primarily of UI students (minimum 80% student membership) and be controlled and directed by UI students. Members are individuals who self-select to join an organization; “membership” is different from the audience a student organization targets, serves, or represents. The “audience” is not automatically considered a part of the organization’s membership. Only UI student members shall have voting rights in a student organization. Membership is not open to persons under the age of 18 who are not enrolled UI students. Non-university community members who are at least 18 years of age may participate in the activities of student organizations but may not be voting members. If the student organization desires to allow persons under the age of 18 who are not UI students to participate in the activities of the student organization, the student organization must follow the requirements contained in the Youth Programs Policy Manual for RSOs, including that the youth participant must have permission to participate from a parent or guardian.

As some University services and benefits require knowledge of a student’s membership in the student organization requesting the service or benefit, all organizations are encouraged to have a full membership roster on file with Leadership & Engagement via the University of Iowa student organization platform. For example, if a member of a student organization wants to request approval to drive or ride in a university vehicle for an organization event or activity, that member must be listed on the organization’s full membership roster located on the University of Iowa student organization platform.

The student organization must be nonprofit in nature; student organizations affiliated with for-profit businesses are not eligible for registration. Student Representatives and student organization members must not profit or benefit financially from student organization membership.

  • Primary and Secondary Student Representatives. Student Representatives are individuals who are authorized by the organization to speak for or represent the organization in its relations with the University and who are authorized to receive for the organization official notices, directives, or information from the University. Every student organization or potential student organization registered with Leadership & Engagement/Recreational Services/academic deans via the University of Iowa student organization platform must include the names of two student representatives in its Organization Profile. Both Representatives must be currently enrolled UI students, and in academic and non-academic good-standing. One name will be designated as the Primary Representative and the other as the Secondary Representative. It is the responsibility of each student organization to update the Organization Profile with the current names of Student Representatives. A student organization no longer under the direction of currently enrolled students may lose its registration.
  • Access to University Resources. Registered student organizations are guaranteed an equal opportunity to apply for funds from mandatory Student Activity fees (i.e., for student organizations) or Recreational Services fees (i.e., for sports clubs) or for any other benefit conferred by the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) or Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG) or their constituent bodies, without differentiation for reasons that violate the University Policy on Human Rights or inhibit the group’s exercise of First Amendment rights of free expression and association. Nothing in this section shall be construed to create or guarantee any expectation of the receipt of funding or other benefits from USG and/or GPSG and/or Recreational Services by any student organization or to prohibit the individual consideration of the program merits of funding or other proposals submitted by such student organizations.
  • To start an organization one must follow the step-by-step process listed on the “ Starting an Organization ” website. Registration of student organizations that are residential living units (i.e., residence hall organizations, fraternities, and sororities) is granted by their respective student governance organization (i.e., Associated Residence Halls [ARH], Interfraternity Council [IFC], Multicultural Greek Council [MGC], National Pan-Hellenic Council [NPHC], and Panhellenic Council [PHC]) with the concurrence of the vice president. The Student Organization Review Committee (SORC) shall review all student organization registration applications. Upon its evaluation, the Committee will register the student organization and forward the organization’s application to the appropriate student governance organization or college/department/unit for confirmation; 2) register the organization subject to specific conditions on activities the organization is permitted to sponsor; or 3) reject the application. If an application is rejected the organization may appeal the decision of the SORC within 30 calendar days upon the receipt of their denial of registration letter. Appeals must be submitted in writing to either the Director of Leadership & Engagement (i.e, for student organizations) or the Director of Recreational Services (i.e., for sport clubs). If an organization appeals and is not satisfied with the decision rendered by the Director of Leadership & Engagement or the Director of Recreational Services they may then submit a final appeal in writing to the Dean of Students. There is no further appeal after the Dean of Students.
  • Constitution and Bylaws. In order to complete the registration process, all student organizations must have an approved constitution and bylaws. Sponsored and affiliated student organizations (see Section 8, Registration Tiers) must also provide a copy of the charter, constitution, and/or bylaws of any organization external to the University with which such organization may be affiliated. Student organizations are required to include mandatory clauses within their organization constitutions.
  • Registration of Inter/National Chartered Organizations. In addition to observing all University rules, an organization that is chartered by an inter/national organization, such as a Greek-letter social fraternity or sorority, must maintain its affiliation with the inter/national organization in order to retain its University registration. University registration will cease when the inter/national organization no longer recognizes or sponsors the student organization as an active organization. In this situation, the organization is no longer eligible to affiliate with their respective student governance organization, to participate in activities sponsored by the governance organization or its member organizations, or to access the privileges granted to registered student organizations. Once the inter/national organization has officially returned the student organization to affiliation status, the student organization representatives may apply to the University and the respective student governance organization for registration, although re-registration is not guaranteed. When the University removes registration of a student organization for violating University rules but the organization remains affiliated with the inter/national organization, the student organization will not regain their University registration by virtue of their relationship with the inter/national organization.
  • Manage their housing unit;
  • Enforce internal organization rules;
  • Ensure that relevant national, state, and local laws and regulations are observed;
  • Provide safe and healthful lodging and cooperate with city or state agencies responsible for enforcing applicable health and safety laws; and
  • Observe relevant University policies in their housing facilities, including the Anti-Hazing Policy and the Sexual Misconduct Policy.
  • Housing Organizations are eligible for the same privileges granted to registered student organizations which do not provide housing.
  • The responsibility for the regulation and governance of professional fraternities that maintain chapter structures shall be with the Dean of the respective college, including professional fraternities registered by the College of Medicine, the College of Dentistry, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, and the Graduate College.
  • The possession or consumption of alcohol is prohibited in registered undergraduate residence group housing except where explicitly authorized in writing by the vice president.
  • Registered student organizations are governed by the Undergraduate Student Government (USG), Graduate and Professional Student Government (GPSG), or Associated Residence Halls (ARH).
  • Undergraduate social fraternities are governed by the University of Iowa Interfraternity Council, Panhellenic Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, or the Multicultural Greek Council, which may establish, consistent with the University Policy on Human Rights, additional rules and regulations for recognition of new fraternities, membership selection standards, and standards of conduct.
  • In order to determine whether a student organization is in compliance with a student governance organization regulation or policy, University officials may from time to time review the organization’s record. Information gathered as part of the review may include, but is not limited to, the following: aggregate grade point averages, membership figures, financial reports, internal rules and policies, insurance coverage schedules, educational programs for members, safety and security precautions, compliance with relevant municipal ordinances and state laws, and complaints to the Iowa City police.

II. Registration Tiers

Each student organization granted registration with the University of Iowa is classified as general, affiliated, or sponsored. The registration tier is determined by assessing the student organization's relationship to the University, the purpose and scope of its activities, the University population served, and the perceived potential risk to participants and the University.

The relationship of student organizations to the University is determined by evaluating the student organization’s mission, goals, and activities as they relate to the mission, vision, goals and culture identified by the University in its Strategic Plan.

The privileges and responsibilities associated with each type of registered student organization are outlined below.

1. General Student Organizations: The privileges of becoming a registered student organization at the University are not extended without careful consideration. General student organizations are those that are consistent with the mission and culture of the University and engage primarily in activities that benefit their membership. These organizations are primarily interest groups capable of functioning with minimal support. The University registers but does not support or endorse the purposes of these general organizations and may not accept responsibility or liability for the activities undertaken by the student organization.

  • Student Activity Center (SAC) storage space; and
  • Reservable space for University-wide annual events at the Iowa Memorial Union, other University facilities, and outdoor venues through the IMU Event Services process and other University scheduling processes.

2. Affiliated Student Organizations: Affiliated student organizations are those that serve a specific University interest and may provide support to University programs and initiatives. They contribute to the mission, vision, goals, and culture of the University by routinely presenting events for their members, the campus, or their related department’s or unit’s members and invited guests. A University department or unit must provide oversight and direct responsibility for the organization and its activities. Affiliated student organizations also may be directly associated with an academic course and its requirements.

In addition to the University resources available to all registered student organizations, affiliated student organizations shall comply with any rules, procedures, and expectations established by the responsible University department or unit.

Because of their broad impact, affiliated student organizations may receive second priority consideration for:

  • Student Organization Office Suite (SOOS) or Student Activity Center (SAC) office or storage space; and
  • Reservable space for University-wide annual events at the Iowa Memorial Union, other University facilities, and outdoor venues through the IMU event services process and other University scheduling processes.

Affiliated student organizations will need to follow appropriate criteria and guidelines from each University department or unit to receive these services and benefits.

3. Sponsored Student Organizations: Sponsored student organizations are those considered critical to the mission and culture of the University and work in partnership with a University department or unit. These organizations are linked to the University because of their role representing the University or in presenting events of broad appeal that are considered an integral part of the institution and its activities. Sponsored student organizations routinely present events for the campus and broader community, and typically work in a collaborative relationship with a University department or unit. The student organization's purpose and effect are to serve a broad segment of the campus community, not just its membership.

Once registered, the events and activities presented by the student organization should accurately and positively reflect the mission, vision, goals and culture of the University, as well as the rules and standards of the institution and its activities. The registration process requires action by both student leaders and University officials. As such, this process creates a mutually beneficial relationship between sponsored student organizations and the University.

In addition to the University resources available to all registered student organizations, sponsored student organizations shall have:

  • A full-time professional staff or faculty member whose job description designates them as the primary adviser to the sponsored student organization in accordance with student organization registration requirements. These advisers are considered experts within the respective student organization's area of interest;
  • A University department or unit that provides oversight and direct responsibility for the student organization and its activities; and
  • Routinely presented events of broad appeal for the campus and community. Student organization operations and event planning are complex, and the majority of the events/programs are University-wide. Sponsored student organizations routinely present events for the campus and broader community, and are expected to work closely with the appropriate University department or unit in the planning of these events.

Because of high complexity, sponsored student organizations may receive first priority consideration for:

Sponsored student organizations must follow appropriate criteria and guidelines from each respective University department or unit to receive these services and benefits.

III. Tier Appeals

An appeals process exists for those organizations desiring a registration tier different than that into which they were initially placed. Based on additional information, an organization's registration tier or may be modified also by the Student Organization Review Committee (SORC).

  • Appeals – Recognition Tier Decision. A student organization has the right to appeal a tier designation decision of the SORC or the determination by Leadership & Engagement to change or modify a student organization's registration tier. An appeal provides a limited review of the original decision. It is not an opportunity to present the evidence again or to re-evaluate credibility. If an error has been made, in most cases the matter will be returned to the SORC so that the error may be corrected.

One of the following two conditions must be used as a basis for appeal:

  • Discovery of new information that was not available at the time of the decision; and/or
  • The appropriate processes for registering student organizations were not followed.

The Director of Leadership & Engagement or Recreational Services will act as the appeal administrator. The Associate Director of Leadership, Service, and Civic Engagement or Recreational Services will act as the appeal administrator if the Director is unable to serve due to conflict of interest or absence.

Written documentation stating the grounds for appeal must be filed with the appeal administrator within ten (10) business days of receipt of the original SORC decision.

The appeal administrator will decide one of the following:

  • Uphold the original decision;
  • Remand the case back to the SORC for reconsideration consistent with the findings of the appeal administrator;
  • Remand for a new registration process review of the student organization; or
  • Modify the registration tier assigned by the SORC.

The appeal administrator will provide a written decision to the SORC Chair within ten (10) business days of the appeal review. An appeal may be taken within ten (10) business days to the Dean of Students.

IV. Registration Renewal

  • Each student organization is required to complete the re-registration process through University of Iowa student organization platform on an annual basis. There are two re-registration windows held each year. An organization’s re-registration window is assigned based on when the organization selects new leadership. Organizations who select new leaders in the fall semester are eligible for re-registration beginning November 1 closing December 31. Organizations who select new leaders in the spring semester are elibgible for re-registration beginning April 1 and closing May 31. (dates are subject to adjustment based on annual calendar changes). Re-registration is required even if there are no changes from the previous semester in primary and/or secondary representative and contact information. A student organization that does not complete the re-registration process will be moved to a temporary inactive status for one semester and will be eligible to re-register in the next open re-registration period. Registered student organizations must provide complete and accurate information as requested in the profile. If additional information is needed, student organization representatives must provide information upon request to Leadership & Engagement or Recreational Services. For those student organizations that are registered by an academic college as well as by a student government, student leaders are advised to check with the college/department/unit regarding registration deadlines. More information regarding student organization re-registration may be found on the Leadership and Engagement re-registration website .
  • Periodically, the Student Organization Review Committee reviews the status of student organizations to ensure the safety and welfare of students who participate in activities sponsored by the organization. Depending upon the results of its evaluation, the Committee will 1) register the student organization; 2) register the student organization subject to specific conditions on activities the organization is permitted to sponsor; or 3) recommend to the Director of Leadership & Engagement or Director of Recreational Services that registration be denied.

V. Organizational Registration Changes

  • During the year, registered student organizations must report to Leadership & Engagement or Recreational Services any amendments to or changes in its student organization name, constitution, by-laws, student representatives, and/or advisers within two weeks of the changes becoming effective. Registered student organizations also must submit any additional information requested from time to time by their respective registering body.

VI. Advisers

  • Student organization advisers are strongly encouraged for all registered student organizations. Advisers shall be faculty members whenever possible in order to promote student-faculty interaction beyond the classroom. Professional & Scientific staff with advising experience and/or relevant expertise also may serve as student organization advisers. Merit staff, with advising experience and/or relevant expertise also may serve as student organization advisers upon approval from the Leadership & Engagement, Recreational Services, or academic dean. A non-University affiliated individual may serve as an adviser to a student organization only if they serve as a liaison to a local/regional/national organization with which the registered student organization has an official affiliation.
  • Student organization advisers must be employed at the University on at least a .5 FTE basis. The Division of Student Life shall have the right not to approve advisers of student organizations who are on disciplinary status as determined by the appropriate University department or unit.
  • All student organization advisers are strongly encouraged to participate in the adviser training programs sponsored by Leadership & Engagement. Leadership & Engagement and Recreational Services will provide specific information to student organizations about these requirements.
  • Graduate assistants, with at least 50% appointments, may serve as additional advisers in conjunction with student organization advisers who meet the requirements stated above; however, they will not have signatory authority (e.g., financial transactions, contracts, vouchers).

VII. Space Allocation for Registered Student Organizations

  • Limited office or storage space is available to registered student organizations in the Student Organization Office Suite (SOOS) or Student Activity Center (SAC) in the Iowa Memorial Union. Student organizations allocated space in the SOOS or SAC must abide by the policies in regard to use of office or storage space. Inquiries regarding office and storage space can be made by contacting Leadership, Service, and Civic Engagement by email at [email protected] Office and storage space requests are reviewed annually by the Leadership and Engagement and recommendations for assignment of space are made to the Associate Director of Leadership, Service, and Civic Engagement. Sport Clubs are required to follow all policies in regard to storage space established by Recreational Services.

Update about the encampment

Dear members of the McGill community,

My last update on the situation on downtown campus was on May 3, the day after police had mobilized to successfully de-escalate tensions between large numbers of protesters and counter-protesters in front of the Roddick Gates.

Since the beginning of the encampment, we have had many discussions with representatives of members of the McGill community participating in the encampment to try to find a timely and peaceful resolution. These talks are still ongoing.

I write today to let you know that McGill is seeking a court order that would require those participating to dismantle the encampment, and to refrain from camping on or occupying McGill’s downtown campus. The order would authorize the Montreal police (SPVM) to enforce it.

I would like to emphasize that the order, if granted, would not stop our efforts to continue our discussions with members of the McGill community participating in the encampment. We are committed to doing so in good faith.

The University wishes to see a peaceful and timely resolution of the occupation of the lower field of downtown campus.

Why McGill is seeking to dismantle the encampment

McGill is seeking the order to dismantle the encampment for multiple reasons.

  • The University is concerned about the risks that the encampment poses to the safety, security and public health of members of the McGill community and for those participating in the encampment. Neither McGill nor organizations such as the Montreal Fire Prevention Services have been able to go into the area to verify compliance with health and safety. For example, it appears that the people inside the encampment have no escape routes in case of fire. The encampment, which is densely populated, backs onto the McLennan Library building and is barricaded by fencing on three sides. There appears to be only one point to enter or exit the encampment. The encampment also obstructs an emergency exit at the McLennan Library.
  • The presence of the encampment has already attracted large numbers of protesters and counter-protesters of different viewpoints, causing tensions to escalate on campus. The encampment has the potential to create unsafe situations unpredictably. On May 2, protests in support of and against the encampment required the mobilization of more than 100 police officers and the closure of part of Sherbrooke Street.
  • Although we welcome the public to many spaces on our campuses to walk, eat lunch, attend events, or other time-limited activities, the University remains private property. Our campuses are primarily for the use and benefit of members of the McGill community. An occupation such as the encampment monopolizes university property, preventing the McGill community from using that space for their normal activities. The encampment will, in all likelihood, prevent students and their families from celebrating this spring’s convocation on lower campus, where the ceremonies for most faculties normally take place.

McGill respects the right to protest

Protection of the fundamental rights of freedom of expression and freedom of peaceful assembly are justifiably a primary concern for the members of our community, for Montrealers, for Quebecers and for Canadians. Therefore, I want to reassure our community that our application for this order does  not  ask the court to stop protests that follow the University’s policies or the law, even if those protests raise uncomfortable, controversial and/or critical speech.

The application for the order instead asks that any further protests are conducted in a way that does not pose risks to people’s safety, security or health, and remain within the bounds protected by the law and McGill’s policies. The encampment is not a protest but a continuous occupation that prevents members of our community from using the space and which creates real risks to health and safety.

Those participating in the encampment can find other ways to exercise their right to peaceful protest within the bounds set by the law and our policies.

The fundamental importance of McGill’s mission

McGill exists to carry out its mission, which is the advancement of learning and the creation and dissemination of knowledge. McGill does not make decisions regarding its investments or academic activities on the basis of geopolitical matters, but rather uses its mission, principles and policies to guide its decisions.

The University’s focus must be to offer the best possible education, to carry out research and scholarly activities judged to be excellent by the highest international standards, and to provide service to society. To do so, we must offer all members of our community a safe and secure environment, free from violence, harassment, obstruction and intimidation.

Finally, I want to reassure graduating students that, despite the uncertainty caused by the encampment, you and your families will have the opportunity to celebrate your accomplishments at spring convocation. The dates will be the same; we will confirm location shortly.

UC alumna appointed interim senior vice president of External Relations and Communications

Meredith Turner

University of California President Michael V. Drake, M.D., has selected Meredith Vivian Turner to be interim senior vice president of External Relations and Communications at the UC Office of the President. The appointment was approved today (May 16, 2024) by the UC Board of Regents and effective May 17, 2024.

Turner succeeds Michael Reese, whose interim appointment as senior vice president concludes on June 30. Turner was selected after a competitive national recruitment process and will assume the role on an interim basis for one year or until the appointment of a permanent senior vice president.

An experienced government relations and communications leader, Turner brings a deep understanding of the public higher education landscape and extensive ties to the University of California. A graduate of UC Santa Cruz and former president of its alumni board, Turner has served in multiple roles at the UC Office of the President since 2016. She previously spent her career advocating for public higher education in California and empowering student voices through roles at the California State University system and the California State Senate.

“I am thrilled to see Meredith step into this important role, leading the external engagement and communications efforts at the Office of the President. I am confident that in the months ahead, she will prove to be a successful UC advocate and leader of the External Relations and Communications Division,” said President Drake. “Meredith brings deep experience and expertise to this role. She has forged strong relationships with and has earned support from our Regents, chancellors, legislators and key UC advocates. I am particularly pleased to be promoting a UC-grown leader from within our organization to give continuity of leadership to ER&C, whose talented and experienced staff know and respect Meredith from her work as chief of staff under two senior vice presidents.”

Turner’s portfolio will include all University-wide internal and external communications and outreach, state and federal governmental relations, and advancement and alumni relations in support of UC’s tripartite mission of education, research and public service.

Turner is currently the chief of staff of External Relations and Communications at the Office of the President, where she serves as a strategic thought partner to the SVP and other senior leadership, drives divisional communications and governmental relations priorities, leads the division’s work with the Board of Regents, and cultivates influential external partnerships. Turner’s previous work in UC’s Office of State Governmental Relations enhanced the university’s relationships with state policymakers and transformed the university’s advocacy programs.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve the University of California in such an impactful role,” said Turner. “I know first-hand the transformative power of a UC education, and I look forward to working with a talented team and so many UC advocates on elevating the University’s positive impact on California communities.”

Prior to her time at UC, Turner held several roles with the Cal State Student Association at the CSU Chancellor’s Office, elevating its state and federal governmental relations function into a dynamic, high touch-advocacy model. Turner also served as communications manager for then-State Senator Lou Correa and has worked and volunteered on several local, state and national campaigns.

Turner has volunteered on the UC Santa Cruz Alumni Board since 2016, holding leadership positions as vice president of administration, president, and currently as the immediate past president. She served as an ex-officio trustee on the UC Santa Cruz Foundation Board from 2020–2022.

Turner is the recipient of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s (CASE) Edwin Crawford Award for Innovation, as well as several CASE awards for her advocacy work at UC and CSU. She holds a bachelor’s degree in history from UC Santa Cruz and a master’s degree in public policy from the University of Southern California. 

Turner’s base annual salary will be $345,000. UC’s top executives comprise less than one-tenth of 1 percent of all employees. Their combined earnings equate to less than one-half of 1 percent of UC’s systemwide gross compensation. More details on Turner’s appointment may be found in the Regents’ item .

Turner lives in Sacramento with her husband Brian, a fellow UC Santa Cruz alumnus, and their almost six-year-old son, Liam.
