Taught in Foreign Languages - Greek

Doctoral Studies lead to the award of a Doctorate (PhD). The general goal of doctoral studies consists of high-level specialization in strategic areas of knowledge and promotion of fundamental research in various scientific fields with a view to strengthening the country’s scientific base. In the case of Universities offering postgraduate programs it is essential to have a post-graduate diploma in order to obtain a Doctorate. Permission to prepare a doctoral dissertation at Universities which do not offer regular post-graduate programs is granted to applicants who meet certain prerequisites. The departments themselves lay down the admission requirements.

Postgraduate Programs by School

In accordance with existing laws, higher education institutions (i.e. universities and technological education institutes) are responsible for the planning and organization of postgraduate studies in Greece and for granting Master’s Degrees. Universities have additional powers to grant PhD Degrees.

Postgraduate Programmes

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens offers a wide range of postgraduate studies programmes (departmental, interdepartmental, inter-institutional and interstate ones), covering a variety of scientific fields, thus enabling graduates, as well as graduates of other academic institutions, to promote science and to claim their place in the labour market.

Aiming at extroversion and the broadening of its prospective target groups, the University of Athens has also proceeded to the organization and operation of postgraduate programmes in languages other than the Greek language.

Postgraduate programmes are either funded through the current budget or offered on a tuition-fee basis. In order to ensure the proper operation and sustainability of its postgraduate programmes, UoA is also seeking alternative sources of funding, such as donations, grants, research programmes, etc. Furthermore, it promotes the implementation of a scholarship system based on economic and social criteria, as well as on students’ performance.

The Departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens encourage innovation and research and offer graduates the possibility of preparing a doctoral thesis. For information on the terms and conditions for admission to a PhD program, visit the Departments' websites.

The Departments of NKUA offer the possibility of preparing a doctoral thesis with co-supervision in collaboration with other Departments of NKUA or another H.E.I. of the country or abroad and/or in collaboration with other research and technological bodies (research Institutes, Foundations, research centers).

In addition, the Departments of NKUA may conclude agreement with industry or business for the preparation of a doctoral thesis (industrial doctorate) which concerns the conduct of industrial or applied research with the aim of extracting research results for the production of innovative products or services.

Postdoctoral Research

The University of Athens fosters cooperation with scientists conducting postdoctoral research in areas falling within its various Departments’ research fields. From the University’s part, cooperation mainly refers to providing postdoctoral research supervision or counseling support by one or more members of the host Department’s Research and Teaching Staff, providing access to scientific material or equipment, or assigning specific research projects whether on a remuneration-appointment basis or not.

Each candidate for a doctoral degree is required to meet the communication and Greek language requirements. Classes on the Greek language are offered to all international students by the AUTH School of Modern Greek.

Recognition of foreign academic titles

In order to apply for a doctoral program, Degrees issued by a foreign university must be declared equivalent to the Greek Master’s Degree by the Hellenic National Academic Recognition Information Center (NARIC/DOATAP) ( https://www.doatap.gr ), according to procedures and deadlines established in the website. The Greek NARIC Network (National Academic Recognition Information Centres) aims at improving academic recognition of diplomas and periods of study in the Member States of the EU, the EEA countries and the associated countries in Central and Eastern Europe and Cyprus.

Duration of the PhD Study Programme

The time required for the completion of a Ph.D. programme, ranges from a minimum of 3 years to a maximum of 5 years. When required and only in special cases, two (2) year extension may be granted by the Graduate Committee.

Doctoral Committee

In case of acceptance, a three-member supervising committee is assigned by the School, consisting of three faculty members, the dissertation advisor and two readers. The supervising committee is responsible for guiding the doctoral candidate’s work and for monitoring her/his progress. The committee submits an evaluation letter affirming the thesis progress of each Ph.D. student on an annual basis.

The requirements for the degree include: (a) a year of coursework which is tailored to the students’ needs based on the committee’s recommendations, and (b) two to three years of the doctoral thesis research and writing. In addition, the Ph.D. student fulfils teaching and research requirements (e.g., undergraduate and graduate teaching assistantship, research activities of the School).

Upon the completion of the Ph.D. thesis, the doctoral candidate must publicly defend her/his thesis. A 7-member examination committee, consisting of the three supervising faculty members and four examiners coming from the School of Psychology, other departments at AUTH or other universities, evaluate the dissertation and the candidate’s competence to defend her/his work. The defence of the dissertation is done in a conference that is open to the public. The candidate is given at the start a maximum of 1/2 hour to present the main ideas and results of the dissertation and then has to answer questions posed by the examination committee. When all questions have been answered, the examination committee retires to discuss the dissertation and its defence and a decision is reached regarding the grade assigned to the dissertation. The degree is officially conferred during the next full faculty meeting presided by the Rector of the University or representative, during which the candidate takes the oath of the Doctor of Philosophy.

Postgraduate studies today constitute an essential extension to Tertiary Education and play a decisive role in the achievement of educational, cultural, social and economic goals of many universities. Aiming at broadening and underpinning the knowledge offered to university graduates in specific disciplines of the arts and sciences, the Postgraduate Studies Programmes have been structured and are offered in most of the Faculties/Schools of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, that award either a Postgraduate Diploma (Master’s Degree) or a Doctorate Diploma (PhD). Currently, there are many Postgraduate Study Programmes operating in the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, among which there are some Inter-departmental and Inter-institutional ones, and also some in collaboration with other universities in Greece and abroad. There is an appropriate body for recognition of a foreign University degree and that is the Inter-University Center for Recognition of Foreign Academic Titles.   Studying in a Postgraduate Study Programme leading to a MSc degree requires at least one (1) full academic year, namely two (2) semesters, and cannot last more than two (2) full academic years, i.e., four (4) semesters. At Aristotle University of Thessaloniki there are Postgraduate Studies Programmes (Masters) that also lead to awarding Doctorate Diplomas (PhD).  The Doctorate Dissertation is an option in most Faculties/Schools, either as part of the Postgraduate Studies Programmes or independently by the Faculty/School that does not offer the Postgraduate Study route. The PhD thesis must be completed in no fewer than three (3) and in no more than six (6) full academic years from the date of appointment of the three-member advisory committee. The rights and responsibilities of the postgraduate students, the services provided for them, the scholarships granted, the academic calendar etc. are all mentioned in the Postgraduate Programme Internal Regulation of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as well as in the respective Internal Regulation for the Postgraduate Study Programmes of each Faculty/School and, of course, in the webpage of the  Department of Studies .   General Admission requirements Admission to the Postgraduate Studies Programmes is regulated today by Article 4 of the Gov.Law 3685/2008. The 1st cycle of Postgraduate Study Programmes accepts graduates of Greek Higher Education Institutions or recognized foreign institutions of equivalent status. The admission process is described in the relevant Internal Regulation for the Postgraduate Study Programmes of each  Faculty/School . Applicants that wish to be admitted to PhD Study Programmes (3rd cycle) must hold a MSc degree (or other equivalent) and they must satisfy all the requirements defined in the respective Internal Regulation for each Postgraduate Study Programme. In exceptional cases it is possible for a student to become admitted to a PhD programme without holding an MA, mentioned in the relevant Internal Regulation, after a legitimate and documented decision of the Faculty/School. In this case, the PhD student will have to successfully attend and complete a courses cycle as mandated by the Faculty/School. For further information, the Postgraduate candidates should contact directly the Faculty or School of their choice. Due to the increasing emphasis that has been placed in informing the students and pre diploma undergraduates of the Postgraduate Studies Programmes at Aristotle University, the Department of Studies has made available information pertaining to studies in Greece and abroad. The students who are interested in further information on Postgraduate Studies at Aristotle University can visit the  Department of Studies , that is located in the Karatheodoridi’s Building.   Useful links: School of Modern Greek Language Centre for Foreign Language teaching Centre for the Greek Language, Thessaloniki S tudy in Greece

We had all been wondering “where is Costas?” and now we learned that we shall not see him again. We have lost a good friend and leader in the photonics community.

Costas M. Soukoulis, a pioneer and leader in the fields of localization of light, photonic crystals, three-dimensional photonic bandgap materials, and optical metamaterials, passed away at the age of 73 on 14 March 2024 in Ames, Iowa, USA.

find a phd greece

For decades, it seemed that Soukoulis was constantly travelling the world, being at conferences, giving talks, visiting many old friends, making many new friends abroad and simultaneously entertaining two very active research groups, one in the USA at Ames Laboratory and one in Crete at IESL-FORTH. “Is he at Ames?”; “No, I heard somebody saw him in Greece.”; “No, he is rather again at Karlsruhe on his Alexander von Humboldt Prize…” Often he travelled together with his beloved wife Angela, even more so giving you the feeling of being part of a warm-hearted family, in which good science and good life are inseparable.

Soukoulis was born in Agios Ioannis at Corinthia, a small village 50 miles from Athens, Greece on 15 January 1951. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Athens, he moved to the USA and obtained his master’s degree in 1975 and PhD in 1978 from the University of Chicago. He was a visiting assistant professor at the Department of Physics of the University of Virginia from 1978–1981 and then a research physicist at Exxon Corporate Research Laboratory from 1981–1984, before joining Iowa State University and Ames Lab in Iowa. He was also an associated member of IESL-FORTH at Heraklion, Crete, Greece from 1984 onwards.

At Exxon, together with Eleftherios N. Economou, he published early pioneering work on the localization of light in disordered media 1 , 2 , 3 . After accepting a professorial position at Ames Laboratory in 1984, he continued along this line of research 4 . Soukoulis and his collaborators were excited about the idea of man-made periodic architectures possessing a complete bandgap for light in three dimensions 5 . At that time, it was not at all clear whether such an analogy to electrons in semiconductors really worked because light is a vector wave, while electrons are simpler scalar waves. It took some more years until these ground-breaking conceptual ideas were brought to a point at which experimental realization through layer-by-layer manufacturing approaches came into reach 6 . Unfortunately, Soukoulis can no longer tell you his emotional version of the bumpy publication history of this famous paper on what is now well-known as the “woodpile photonic crystal” 6 . Ten years later, it led us to joint experiments 7 and then after another ten years to the realization of the original dream of visible-frequency three-dimensional complete bandgap woodpile photonic crystals 8 .

In parallel, Soukoulis made ground-breaking contributions to the then emerging field of optical metamaterials. In 2004, the race to bring magnetic resonant responses and thereby negative refractive indices to visible frequencies had just started 9 . In yet another fruitful theory–experiment collaboration, we jointly succeeded in reaching the visible 10 , 11 . Soukoulis continued to make significant contributions to metamaterials research until very recently, including important theoretical developments on active-gain metamaterials 12 , chiral metamaterials 13 , graphene-based metamaterials 14 and many others.

Being with Soukoulis made you appreciate how important good life and good science are. He could tell you that the fish served in the restaurant was caught yesterday rather than today — and the same applied to journal papers. He loved organizing conferences and knew how to create a warm welcoming atmosphere. Soukoulis once shared with us his criteria to choose invited speakers: “Firstly, I choose the best scientists, as to ensure top quality of lectures; second, the best dancers, or people who can drive dancing, as to ensure excellent social events.” Indeed, music and dance were a tradition in the conferences he organized — of course including Soukoulis dancing himself.

Soukoulis, an outstanding scientist and human, will be dearly missed by his wife Angela, their son Victor, the large “Soukoulis family” around the world, and the photonics community.

I quit my Ph.D. program to be a wife and mother at 23. It's not what I expected for my post-college life, but I'm happier.

  • After college, I ennrolled in a Ph.D. program I wasn't actually interested in.
  • I eventually dropped out of the program so that I could focus on my husband and being a mother.
  • I am now pregnant, and I'm so happy with my decision.

Insider Today

In high school, I knew college would be an important step toward success and a career. Nonetheless, my deeper desires involved finding "the one" — friends-to-lovers style.

I had a full scholarship to the college of my dreams, but I quickly shifted focus from my studies to my personal development. I wanted to know more about myself than my classes.

And that's what I did. I created a podcast with my friends. I fell in love with my best friend and got my friends-to-lovers romance. We even got married in college. I also discovered my passion for mental health.

But by the end of my senior year, reality started to set in. I became so fearful of graduation because I had no job prospects or future plans. I suddenly realized I would become a stay-at-home wife , and that terrified me even more.

To avoid that, I desperately searched for a career and enrolled in a graduate program I wasn't interested in.

I quickly lost interest in my Ph.D. program

I was among a small number of students who were able to get into a Ph.D. program directly from undergrad.

Related stories

I was an academic in training, which meant having two part-time jobs, doing side research projects, and attending class. I saw my husband less, but he supported the sacrifice as long as I got what I wanted. I started working at 8 a.m. and finished around 7 p.m. I worked on the weekends, too.

The Pinterest-inspired home I hoped to have would have required my creativity and time, both of which are limited resources when you're running the career race. So, we kept the white walls, with no time to hang the framed pictures of our wedding day .

I started therapy during this time, and I was forced to address the fear and anxiety that had pushed me to jump head-first into a career I wasn't sure about. Toward the end of my first semester , I knew this career was not for me. I wasn't able to invest in my marriage. I wasn't able to write creatively on topics that mattered. I wasn't becoming who I wanted to be.

So, I left the program, prompting everyone in my life to wonder why I would leave a school that would earn me the highest degree you can get in academics.

I chose to be a wife and mother instead

After leaving my program, I felt relief, then sadness, and then relief again. Undergrad was about becoming myself, but graduate school showed me the realities of unbecoming — unbecoming a perfectionist, unbecoming a planner, and unbecoming a high-achiever . The pain of unbecoming had given me the freedom to change.

When I let go of grinding toward a career, I learned about my desire to be a mother. I wanted to share the beauties of the world with someone else, someone I created. Now, I'm pregnant .

When I let go of the negative connotations of being a stay-at-home wife, I realized my desire to make my home into a creative and comfortable space. So, I created it. When I let go of the fear of being a wife, I saw my husband as a compassionate, servant, and loving person who needed it in return. Now, I give love freely. When I let go of the fear of people seeing me as wasted potential, I found writing again. So, I write.

This is not what I expected for my post-graduation life , but my life is both better and different than my expectations.

In the year after graduation, I've learned that becoming's shadow is unbecoming. They exist together. The becoming is full of excitement and hope. The unbecoming is full of pain, truth, and even fear. But there's hope on the horizon.

Big Brother star pretended to be in Greece before big announcement

Janelle BB14 Photo

Big Brother alums Janelle Pierzina and Britney Haynes tried to pull a fast one on reality TV fans.

And the joke turned out to be pretty funny.

It was very similar to how Danielle Reyes recently complained about not getting to play on The Traitors , only for fans to find out she was on the new cast.

This time, the story was pushed that Britney was in Greece vacationing, and her friend Janelle was there to help spin that narrative.

The amusing part about the joke was that anyone paying close attention could tell it was all a ruse.

Janelle and Britney go to Greece?

“Having the BEST time,” read an Instagram Story Britney Haynes reportedly shared online.

An image attached to the post indicated that Britney was in Greece with her friend Janelle.

But the ladies weren’t actually in Greece. The photo had been edited to feature the ladies posing during their time on The Amazing Race.

It was an apparent attempt to have fun with the rumors that Britney was about to film The Traitors 3.

Janelle adds some additional humor to the Britney joke

“When Britney and I travel together it’s always to Greece! having so much fun with my bestie,” Janelle commented on the post.

It was an additional level to the joke, with Janelle playing along with the narrative. It also got people thinking about Janelle possibly popping up on The Traitors 3, similar to Kate Chastain during Season 2.

Kate from Below Deck appeared in the first season and shockingly showed up at the castle midway through Season 2.

Janelle played in the second season, making people wonder if she could pop up midway through Season 3.

The big announcement for Britney Haynes

Britney Haynes is on The Traitors 3 cast.

She is one of the 21 players trying to win a piece of the $250,000 prize.

Before this, Britney appeared on Big Brother twice, The Amazing Race, and Big Brother: Reindeer Games.

Britney is very good at the confessionals (where reality TV people are shown speaking to the camera during an episode). That trend will likely continue in Scotland.

Filming takes place this spring, with episodes likely to debut this winter on Peacock.

The first two seasons of The Traitors USA are streaming on Peacock. Britney’s Big Brother seasons (BB12 and BB14) and her time on The Amazing Race (Season 31) can be streamed on Paramount+.

Big Brother 26 debuts July 17 on CBS.

All episodes of Big Brother are now streaming on Paramount+. Try it FREE!

DO NOT pay attn to the other reviews saying they run small. DO NOT buy half size up. The fit length runs normal. it's just the shoe width runs a little tight, but no big, good shoe. I love the green with purple, reminds me of Joker. ...

Go to the Hoop

See the grooves splitting down the middle of the outsole? They give you more flexibility to make side-to-side movements like the Euro step easier to pull off, whether you’re in transition or swiveling around a defender at the rim.

We made the midsole’s foam softer than the Giannis Immortality 2, for a more flexible underfoot experience when sprinting the floor and filling the lanes.

Secure Feel

A synthetic midfoot strap helps keep your foot steady when moving from side to side. The upper uses a light, breathable mesh to help keep your foot cool.

Ph.D. Student Wins Best Paper at Robotics Conference

Ask a person to find a frying pan, and they will most likely go to the kitchen. Ask a robot to do the same, and you may get numerous responses, depending on how the robot is trained.

Since humans often associate objects in a home with the room they are in, Naoki Yokoyama thinks robots that navigate human environments to perform assistive tasks should mimic that reasoning.

Roboticists have employed natural language models to help robots mimic human reasoning over the past few years. However, Yokoyama, a Ph.D. student in robotics, said these models create a “bottleneck” that prevents agents from picking up on visual cues such as room type, size, décor, and lighting.

Yokoyama presented a new framework for semantic reasoning at the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) last month in Yokohama, Japan. ICRA is the world’s largest robotics conference.

Yokoyama earned a best paper award in the Cognitive Robotics category with his Vision-Language Frontier Maps (VLFM) proposal .

Assistant Professor Sehoon Ha and Associate Professor Dhruv Batra from the School of Interactive Computing advised Yokoyama on the paper. Yokoyama authored the paper while interning at the Boston Dynamics’ AI Institute .

“I think the cognitive robotic category represents a significant portion of submissions to ICRA nowadays,” said Yokoyama, whose family is from Japan. “I’m grateful that our work is being recognized among the best in this field.”

Instead of natural language models, Yokoyama used a renowned vision-language model called BLIP-2 and tested it on a Boston Dynamics “Spot” robot in home and office environments.

“We rely on models that have been trained on vast amounts of data collected from the web,” Yokoyama said. “That allows us to use models with common sense reasoning and world knowledge. It’s not limited to a typical robot learning environment.”

What is Blip-2?

BLIP-2 matches images to text by assigning a score that evaluates how well the user input text describes the content of an image. The model removes the need for the robot to use object detectors and language models.

Instead, the robot uses BLIP-2 to extract semantic values from RGB images with a text prompt that includes the target object.

BLIP-2 then teaches the robot to recognize the room type, distinguishing the living room from the bathroom and the kitchen. The robot learns to associate certain objects with specific rooms where it will likely find them.

From here, the robot creates a value map to determine the most likely locations for a target object, Yokoyama said.

Yokoyama said this is a step forward for intelligent home assistive robots, enabling users to find objects — like missing keys — in their homes without knowing an item’s location.

“If you’re looking for a pair of scissors, the robot can automatically figure out it should head to the kitchen or the office,” he said. “Even if the scissors are in an unusual place, it uses semantic reasoning to work through each room from most probable location to least likely.”

He added that the benefit of using a VLM instead of an object detector is that the robot will include visual cues in its reasoning.

“You can look at a room in an apartment, and there are so many things an object detector wouldn’t tell you about that room that would be informative,” he said. “You don’t want to limit yourself to a textual description or a list of object classes because you’re missing many semantic visual cues.”

While other VLMs exist, Yokoyama chose BLIP-2 because the model:

  • Accepts any text length and isn’t limited to a small set of objects or categories.
  • Allows the robot to be pre-trained on vast amounts of data collected from the internet.
  • Has proven results that enable accurate image-to-text matching.

Home, Office, and Beyond

Yokoyama also tested the Spot robot to navigate a more challenging office environment. Office spaces tend to be more homogenous and harder to distinguish from one another than rooms in a home.

“We showed a few cases in which the robot will still work,” Yokoyama said. “We tell it to find a microwave, and it searches for the kitchen. We tell it to find a potted plant, and it moves toward an area with windows because, based on what it knows from BLIP-2, that’s the most likely place to find the plant.”

Yokoyama said as VLM models continue to improve, so will robot navigation. The increase in the number of VLM models has caused robot navigation to steer away from traditional physical simulations.

“It shows how important it is to keep an eye on the work being done in computer vision and natural language processing for getting robots to perform tasks more efficiently,” he said. “The current research direction in robot learning is moving toward more intelligent and higher-level reasoning. These foundation models are going to play a key role in that.”
