Hydrologic Science Program

What is Hydrologic Science?

Hydrologic science program overview, graduate research project, wrese admission requirements.

The hydrologic science program at UW provides cutting-edge graduate-level education in technical, philosophical, socioeconomic and methodological aspects of hydrology related to both above- and below-ground systems and the interaction between humans and hydrologic systems.

With faculty spread across campus in a variety of specialties, we are able to offer a broad range of graduate coursework and engage our graduate students in a diverse selection of research projects. Our program comes with the flexibility to tailor each student’s pathway to their particular needs and interests.

Researchers in river

The core experiential learning component of the hydrologic science programs is the graduate research project. Research typically starts in the students' first year and the project evolves as each student develops more ownership over the science. In some cases, students in this program may also choose to become involved in industry internships.

The WRESE Program only admits students seeking a doctoral degree.

Minimum criteria for admission to the program are:

  • Minimum undergraduate GPA of 3.000
  • Agreement by a faculty member affiliated with the WRESE program to sponsor the student
  • Admission to a home department at the University of Wyoming

Typically, students admitted into the program will have previously obtained a master's-level degree. Under exceptional circumstances, students may be admitted directly after an undergraduate degree if they show exceptional promise and commitment. Students already admitted to doctoral programs in individual departments at the University of Wyoming may apply to transfer to the program.

MIT scholars will take commercial break with entrepreneurial scholarship

Two MIT scholars, each with a strong entrepreneurial drive, have received 2024 Kavanaugh Fellowship awards, advancing their quest to turn pioneering research into profitable commercial enterprises.

The Kavanaugh Translational Fellows Program gives scholars training to lead organizations that will bring their research to market. PhD candidates Grant Knappe and Arjav Shah are this year’s recipients. Knappe is developing a drug delivery platform for an emerging class of medicines called nucleic acid therapeutics. Shah is using hydrogel microparticles to clean up water polluted by heavy metals and other contaminants. Knappe and Shah will begin their fellowship with years of entrepreneurial expertise under their belts. They’ve developed and refined their business plans through MIT’s innovation ecosystem, including the Sandbox, the Legatum Center, the Venture Mentoring Service, the National Science Foundation’s I-Corps Program, and Blueprint by The Engine. Now, the yearlong Kavanaugh Fellowship will give the scholars time to focus exclusively on testing their business plans and exercising decision-making skills — critical to startup success — with the guidance of MIT mentors.

“It’s a testament to the support and direction they’ve received from the MIT community that their entrepreneurial aspirations have evolved and matured over time,” says Michael J. Cima, program director for the Kavanaugh program and the David H. Koch Professor of Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.

Founded in 2016, the Kavanaugh program was instrumental in helping past fellows launch several robust startups, including low-carbon cement manufacturer Sublime Systems and SiTration, which is using a new type of filtration membrane to extract critical materials such as lithium.

A safer way to deliver breakthrough medicines

Nucleic acid therapeutics, including mRNA and CRISPR, are disrupting today’s clinical landscape thanks to their promise of targeting disease treatment according to genetic blueprints. But the first methods of delivering these molecules to the body used viruses as their transport, raising patient safety concerns .

“Humans have figured out how to engineer certain viruses found in nature to deliver specific cargoes [for disease treatment],” says Knappe. “But because they look like viruses, the human immune system sees them as a danger signal and creates an immune reaction that can be harmful to patients.”

Given the safety profile issues of viral delivery, researchers turned to non-viral technologies that use lipid nanoparticle technology, a mixture of different lipid-like materials, assembled into particles to protect the mRNA therapeutic from getting degraded before it reaches a cell of interest. “Because they don’t look like viruses there, the immune system generally tolerates them,” adds Knappe.

Recent data show lipid nanoparticles can now target the lung, opening the potential for novel treatments of deadly cancers and other diseases.

Knappe’s work in MIT’s Bathe BioNanoLab focused on building such a non-viral delivery platform based on a different technology: nucleic acid nanoparticles, which combine the attractive components of both viral and non-viral systems. Knappe will spend his Kavanaugh Fellowship year developing proof-of-concept data for his drug delivery method and building the team and funding needed to commercialize the technology.

A PhD candidate in the Department of Chemical Engineering (ChemE), Knappe was initially attracted to MIT because of its intellectual openness. “You can work with any faculty member in other departments. I wasn't restricted to the chemical engineering faculty,” says Knappe, whose supervisor, Professor Mark Bathe, is in the Department of Biological Engineering.

Knappe, who is from New Jersey, welcomes the challenges that will come in his Kavanaugh year, including the need to pinpoint the right story that will convince venture capitalists and other funders to bet on his technology. Attracting talent is also top of mind. “How do you convince really talented people that have a lot of opportunities to work on what you work on? Building the first team is going to be critical,” he says. The network Knappe has been building in his years at MIT is paying dividends now.

Targeting “forever chemicals” in water

That network includes Shah. The two fellows met when they worked on the MIT Science Policy Review , a student-run journal concerned with the intersection of science, technology, and policy. Knappe and Shah did not compete directly academically but used their biweekly coffee walks as a welcome sounding board. Naturally, they were pleased when they found out they had both been chosen for the Kavanaugh Fellowship. So far, they have been too busy to celebrate over a beer.

“We are good collaborators with research, as well,” says Shah. “Now we’re going on this entrepreneurial journey together. It’s been exciting.”

Shah is a PhD candidate in ChemE’s Chemical Engineering Practice program. He got interested in the global imperative for cleaner water at a young age. His hometown of Surat is the heart of India’s textile industry. “Growing up, it wasn’t hard to see the dye-colored water flowing into your rivers and streams,” Shah says. “Playing a role in fostering positive change in water treatment fills me with a profound sense of purpose.”

Shah’s work, broadly, is to clean toxic chemicals called micropollutants from water in an efficient and sustainable manner. “It’s humanly impossible to turn a blind eye to our water problems,” he says, which can be categorized as accessibility, availability, and quality. Water problems are global and complex, not just because of the technological challenges but also sociopolitical ones, he adds.

Manufactured chemicals called per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), or “forever chemicals,” are in the news these days. PFAS, which go into making nonstick cookware and waterproof clothing, are just one of more than 10,000 such emerging contaminants that have leached into water streams. “These are extremely difficult to remove using existing systems because of their chemical diversity and low concentrations,” Shah says. “The concentrations are akin to dropping an aspirin tablet in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.” But no less toxic for that.

In the lab at MIT, Shah is working with Devashish Gokhale, a fellow PhD student, and Patrick S. Doyle, the Robert T. Haslam (1911) Professor of Chemical Engineering, to commercialize an innovative microparticle technology , hydroGel, to remove these micropollutants in an effective, facile, and sustainable manner. Hydrogels are a broad class of polymer materials that can hold large quantities of water.

“Our materials are like Boba beads. We are trying to save the world with our Boba beads,” says Shah with a laugh. “And we have functionalized these particles with tunable chemistries to target different micropollutants in a single unit operation.”

Due to its outsized environmental impact, industrial water is the first application Shah is targeting. Today, wastewater treatment emits more than 3 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions , which is more than the shipping industry’s emissions, for example. The current state of the art for removing micropollutants in the industry is to use activated carbon filters. “[This technology] comes from coal, so it’s unsustainable,” Shah says. And the activated carbon filters are hard to reuse. “Our particles are reusable, theoretically infinitely.”

“I’m very excited to be able to take advantage of the mentorship we have from the Kavanaugh team to take this technology to its next inflection point, so that we are ready to go out in the market and start making a huge impact,” he says.

A dream community

Shah and Knappe have become adept at navigating the array of support and mentorship opportunities MIT has to offer. Shah worked with a small team of seasoned professionals in the water space from the MIT Venture Mentoring Service. “They’ve helped us every step of the way as we think about commercializing the technology,” he says.

Shah worked with MIT Sandbox, which provides a seed grant to help find the right product-market fit. He is also a fellow with the Legatum Center for Development and Entrepreneurship, which focuses on entrepreneurship in emerging countries in growth markets.

“We’re exploring the potential for this technology and its application in a lot of different markets, including India. Because that’s close to my heart,” Shah says. “The Legatum community has been unique, where you can have those extremely hard conversations, confront yourself with those fears, and then talk it out with the group of fellows.”

The Abdul Latif Jameel Water and Food Systems Lab, or J-WAFS, has been an integral part of Shah’s journey with research and commercialization support through its Solutions Grant and a travel award to the Stockholm World Water Week in August 2023.

Knappe has also taken advantage of many innovation programs, including MIT’s Blueprint by the Engine, which helps researchers explore commercial opportunities of their work, plus programs outside of MIT but with strong on-campus ties such as Nucleate Activator and Frequency Bio.

It was during one of these programs that he was inspired by two postdocs working in Bathe’s lab and spinning out biotech startups from their research, Floris Engelhardt and James Banal. Engelhardt helped spearhead Kano Therapeutics , and Banal launched Cache DNA .

“I was passively absorbing and watching everything that they were going through and what they were excited about and challenged with. I still talk to them pretty regularly to this day,” Knappe says. “It’s been really great to have them as continual mentors, throughout my PhD and as I transition out of the lab.”

Shah says he is grateful not only for being selected for the Kavanaugh Fellowship but to MIT as a community. “MIT has been more than a dream come true,” he says. He will have the opportunity to explore a different side of the institution as he enters the MBA program at MIT Sloan School of Management this fall. Shah expects this program, along with his Kavanaugh training, will supply the skills he needs to scale the business so it can make a difference in the world.

“I always keep coming back to the question ‘How does what I do matter to the person on the street?’ This guides me to look at the bigger picture, to contextualize my research to solving important problems,” Shah says. “So many great technologies are being worked on each day, but only a minuscule fraction make it to the market.”

Knappe is equally dedicated to serving a larger purpose. “With the right infrastructure, between basic fundamental science, conducted in academia, funded by government, and then translated by companies, we can make products that could improve everyone’s life across the world,” he says.

Past Kavanaugh Fellows are credited with spearheading commercial outfits that have indeed made a difference. This year’s fellows are poised to follow their lead. But first they will have that beer together to celebrate.

Here's an overview of some of the scholarships Brevard's students received this year

Many brevard students will graduate with scholarships. here's an overview of where they got them from, and what schools reported the most scholarships..

phd scholarships hydrology

On Friday, Archer Ross will graduate high school with part of his college tuition already paid for.

“I was very excited when I found out about the scholarship,” said the Viera High senior, who earned the dean’s scholarship at Syracuse University. “I think I actually woke my friend up with my celebration on the way back from a field trip. It was late, and he had fallen asleep, but I think I turned and woke him up in my excitement.”

Archer’s scholarship will cover $10,000 a year at Syracuse, where he plans to study forensic science. The cost of attendance for students living on campus was estimated at about $85,214 for the 2023-2024 school year.

How students got scholarships – and the dollar amount attached to them – varies widely. For some, like Archer, it was as simple as applying to their preferred university and getting a scholarship based on their grades. For others, it was a matter of applying to local scholarships, like The Democratic Women's Club of Central Brevard and Space Coast Runners.

FLORIDA TODAY reached out to high schools around the county about the scholarships their students have received. Eleven schools provided data such as how many students received scholarships, where the scholarships were from and the amount of funding the scholarships equated to.

Which school reported the most funds?

Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School in Merritt Island reported the most funds from scholarships, with students receiving more than $7 million dollars in scholarship funds. That figure excludes any funds students received from Bright Futures, according to the school's principal, Jacqueline Ingratta.

Three students are National Merit Scholars, and two received appointments to West Point, Ingratta said, adding that most graduating seniors will attend four-year universities or two-year colleges.

West Shore Jr./Sr. High School reported the second highest figure, with Principal Rick Fleming saying students had received about $6.4 million in funding. He expected that figure would reach about $10 million by the end of the year.

In total, 11 high schools reported more than $28,296,198 funds in scholarships.

Which school reported the most scholarship recipients?

West Shore Jr./Sr. High School in Melbourne reported the most scholarship recipients, saying nearly all of their 138 graduating seniors had received scholarships.

Seven students were named National Merit Scholars, Fleming said. He added that 121 seniors were eligible for Bright Futures, with 61 of those students receiving 100% of their tuition, while 60 will receive 75% of their tuition.

Where did students get scholarships from?

Students received scholarships from a variety of local, state and national sources.

Some Sunshine State colleges, universities and training academies that offered scholarships to Brevard students included Florida State University, University of North Florida, Florida Atlantic University, University of South Florida, University of Central Florida, University of Florida, Florida Tech, Eastern Florida State College, and Cocoa's fire and police academies.

Some students received scholarships for out-of-state schools, including Rochester Institute of Technology, Paine College, Marion Military Institute, Kean University, Colorado State University, University of Southern California, Clemson University, Vanderbilt University, Penn State and Kent State University.

Numerous other sources contributed to Brevard students' scholarships, including Bright Futures, Alpha Phi Alpha, Zeta Phi Beta, Space Coast League of Cities and Jess Parrish Medical Foundation.

'Educated. We Stand': Jenkins creates organization combatting 'conservative takeover' of school boards

When were scholarship deadlines?

Each scholarship source has a different deadline. It’s a good idea for high schoolers to start researching and applying for scholarships between their junior and senior year, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

For Bright Futures, all eligibility requirements must be met by the date of a student’s high school graduation , though SAT, CLT, ACT and PERT tests taken through Aug. 31 are accepted for evaluations. They also must complete a Florida Financial Aid Application no later than Aug. 31 following graduation to be eligible for a scholarship.

'He's not guilty but insane. He's just guilty': Grad student who said he fulfilled 'mission' after killing hydrology professor convicted of murder

A jury took less than three hours to convict a University of Arizona graduate student for the murder of a hydrology professor. Murad Dervish, 48, was found guilty of first-degree murder and other charges in the death of Thomas Meixner, the Pima County Attorney’s Office said .

According to police in Tucson, Arizona , Dervish showed up at the University of Arizona’s John W. Harshbarger Building on Oct. 5, 2022. Someone called the cops on him because he was not supposed to be there.

The school had expelled him and banned him from campus months earlier. Staff received an email in February 2022, featuring his picture and a warning about him.

The incident on Oct. 5 allegedly escalated to Dervish shooting and killing Meixner of the Department of Hydrology & Atmospheric Sciences.

Dervish also hurt another person with bullet fragments, officers said. He fled the scene, later leading officers on a chase down Highway 85 until law enforcement stopped him with a PIT maneuver, according to investigators.

Meixner was pronounced dead at a hospital. Dervish had shot him four times with a 9 mm handgun. There were 11 shell casings in the office where he was shot, officers said.

“The impact of this case has left a lingering effect on the U of A campus community, the Tucson community, and those who were there when the crime occurred,” the attorney’s office said in a statement. “[W]e are glad to see that justice is served in this case

Defense attorney Leo Masursky told jurors during his closing argument that his client was having a psychotic episode at the time of the shooting.

“Murad Dervish lost his mind on Oct. 5, 2022,” Masursky said, according to The Associated Press . “He had severe mental health issues. He did not know right from wrong.”

But Pima County prosecutor Mark Hotchkiss said Dervish planned the shooting because he had bought a 9 mm handgun about a month prior to the incident.

“He is not guilty but insane. He’s just guilty,” Hotchkiss said, per the AP.

When cops arrested Dervish for murder, he allegedly voiced hope that Meixner was “OK.” But police interview footage shows the suspect with a jocular, even proud demeanor as law enforcement tried to get him to confess. He refused to talk to them without a lawyer, but the camera continued to roll as investigators stepped out.

“Well, at least I fulfilled my mission,” he said, alone in the room.

“I hope he’s OK,” Dervish told police during his arrest, according to documents obtained by local CBS affiliate KOLD . “Probably wishful thinking.”

Another alleged comment made the motive pretty clear.

“I just felt so disrespected by that whole department,” he allegedly said. Dervish was seeking a master’s in atmospheric sciences.

Dervish simply said “OK,” when an officer told him about charging him with first-degree murder, as seen on video newly reported by local news outlets .

“You look surprised by that,” the officer said.

Dervish pretty much stonewalled the police.

“We have quite a bit of evidence, and I think you know what that evidence is,” the officer said.

“Well, it’s a shame we can’t talk,” Dervish said. “We seem like we have a lot in common. Going to U of A, living in San Diego.”

The officer told Dervish they found a gun in his car.

“I’m sure you would like to hear it,” the defendant said.

He told police they will hear his story in court.

Dervish’s father said his son had a lengthy history of violence, including attacking him with a crowbar, according to The Arizona Daily Star . The defendant also once tried to strangle his own mother with a scarf, the father reportedly said.

The school has mourned Meixner.

University of Arizona President Robert C. Robbins described him as “an international force in his field of hydrology and atmospheric sciences and a kind and warm man, had a tremendous impact on his department and the students he mentored,” according to an online memorial .

“Tom was a wonderful person, whose larger-than-life approach to being and doing inspired those around him and elevated the community. The world is different without him,” said Carmala Garzione, dean of the College of Science, said in the tribute. “As a cancer survivor, Tom shared with me that he chose to live life to the fullest and focus on things that are valuable to him and beneficial to the people around him. In the face of challenges, he always provided a positive and forward-moving approach.”

Former University of Arizona grad student found guilty of murder in campus shooting of professor

May 21, 2024 / 5:18 PM EDT / AP

A former University of Arizona graduate student was convicted Tuesday of first-degree murder for fatally shooting a hydrology professor on campus, months after he was expelled.

A Pima County Superior Court jury deliberated for less than three hours before reaching a verdict against Murad Dervish, 48, in the death of Thomas Meixner , who was shot 11 times near his office in October 2022.

Dervish also was convicted of five other felony counts, including aggravated assault for a bullet that grazed a building manager. Dervish, who showed no emotion as the verdicts were read, is set to be sentenced on June 24. He could face life in prison.

meixner-imagepeodir.png

Meixner, 52, headed the university's Department of Hydrology and Atmospheric Sciences. Dervish was in the master's degree program in atmospheric sciences.

Authorities said Dervish was banned from the school in January 2022 and later expelled for ongoing issues with professors after he received a bad grade.

Defense attorney Leo Masursky told jurors in his closing argument Monday that Dervish was having a psychotic episode during the shooting and that the crime wasn't premeditated.

He said jurors should hold Dervish accountable but urged them to consider a lesser charge of second-degree murder that could have meant confinement in a psychiatric hospital, rather than a prison cell.

"Murad Dervish lost his mind on Oct. 5, 2022," Masursky said. "He had severe mental health issues. He did not know right from wrong."

But Pima County prosecutor Mark Hotchkiss said evidence showed Dervish planned Meixner's killing and bought — a 9 mm handgun — a month before using it in the shooting.

"He is not guilty but insane. He's just guilty," Hotchkiss said of Dervish.

According to a criminal complaint, a flyer with a photograph of Dervish was circulated to university staff in February 2022 with instructions to call 911 if Dervish ever entered the John W. Harshbarger Building, where Meixner worked.

The complaint also said Dervish was barred from school property and was the subject of several reports of harassment and threats to staff members working at Harshbarger.

Witnesses testified that Dervish was wearing a surgical mask and baseball cap as a disguise when he showed up outside Meixner's office and shot the professor.

Dervish fled the scene but was arrested three hours later after Arizona state troopers stopped his car on a highway more than 120 miles northwest of Tucson.

Authorities said a loaded handgun was found in the vehicle, and the ammunition was consistent with the shell casings found at the shooting scene.
