This Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification will help you stand out from other applicants. As a Teaching Assistant, you will be expected to support the teachers with their daily tasks in the classroom so that they can concentrate on teaching the children.

Your job title could also be a Classroom Assistant or Learning Support Assistant. Your specific duties would vary depending on the school and the age of the children but would typically include:

There are no entry requirements, however English and Maths Level 2 would be advantageous. A suitable work placement is required.

Assessment requirements

Assessments will be carried out using various evaluation mediums such as, observation of practice, witness statements, reflections, case studies, placement log and written questions.

Placement or Practical required

Learners will need to be working, or on a practical placement in a learning environment (school or college) for the duration of the course, and will need to display competence in both skills and knowledge. The school setting must be Key Stage One or higher - no School Nursery or Reception.

Certification Timeframe

You can expect to receive your certification within 12 weeks of successfully completing the qualification. Please note this can be longer if a EQA sample is required

Work as a Teaching Assistant is an incredibly rewarding role. Teaching Assistant's help to foster the learning and development of children and young people. They support with classroom activities like preparing for lessons and help students with learning.

This Supporting Teaching and Learning Level 2 course will help you take your first steps towards a career as a Teaching Assistant. You will learn how to support students aged anywhere between 5-16 years old.

Our industry experienced tutors will support you to develop a solid understanding of theory which you can put into practice with regular work placements.

How often does the course run?

This course runs once per year, starting in September.

Entry requirements

It is recommended to hold or be expecting to achieve GCSE English at grade 4 or above or Level 2 in English.

A satisfactory meeting with a Course Leader, Programme or Curriculum Lead is expected at which your academic entry requirements will be checked and agreed.

In your work experience setting you will work alongside a class teacher and support with small groups of learners undertaking learning activities linked to National Curriculum subjects.

You could be involved in working 1-1 with children who may need additional support or undertake some admin tasks as requested by the teacher.

You will be observed by an assessor who will look at identifying your skills and behaviours to deem you as competent to become a Teaching Assistant.

English and Maths

We can support you to develop your English and maths skills alongside your course. English and maths skills are essential to support children develop their literacy and numeracy skills. You will develop your skills in practical scenarios. There will be lots of records to update and you may be involved in ordering and monitoring financial issues or budgets once employed.

Early Years and Teaching Assistants

Level 2 certificate in supporting teaching and learning (adult course).

This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

This course is designed for those who wish to progress into a role which supports teachers and pupils with their learning in a school environment.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

There are two pathways in which you can study this course, a classroom based learning route and a workplace learning route.

Classroom-Based Learning Route

This route has start dates (day option and evening option) in September and is classroom based, delivered one day per week in College. You will also spend one day per week on a voluntary work placement within an education setting of your choice. You will need to seek and secure this independently although we can help you with this.

The day route is on a Tuesday, from 9.30am - 3.00pm.

Workplace Learning Route

This route has flexible start dates throughout the year and is mainly assessed in the workplace. You will need to be in paid employment or have a volunteer placement within a school or college supporting children and young people aged 5 to 19 years of age.

The duration of the course is usually one year, however, on this work-based learning route, you may complete earlier. At the beginning of the course you will be assigned an assessor who will work with you throughout the programme.

What will I study?

You will develop the theoretical understanding gained from a range of units, including:

  • Child and young person development
  • Safeguarding the welfare of children and young people
  • Communication and professional relationships with children
  • Young people and adults
  • Equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people
  • Help improve own and team practice in schools
  • Maintain and support relationships with children and young people
  • Support children and young peoples' health and safety
  • Support children and young people's positive behaviour

How is it assessed?

You will be fully supported by your tutor/assessor during delivery sessions. You will link the theory that has been taught on the course to your practical work in the form of direct observation case studies, activities, reflective logs, diaries and practice files.

During the course you will build an online portfolio of evidence and will need access to a laptop or PC.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

No formal qualifications are necessary, although you may find having a relevant level 1 qualification beneficial.

The total cost of this course is £633. You may be eligible for funding depending on your personal circumstances and subject to a fee assessment during the enrolment process. For further details, please visit our financial support pages .
