Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a book about a middle-schooler named Greg Heffley, but he seems to have a lot of bad luck. Greg is not as tough as his dad would like for him to be. Greg is actually pretty wimpy, but his dad really wants that to change. Greg lives with his parents, an older brother (Rodrick), and a little brother (Manny).

Whipping Greg into shape was not going to be easy, and the fact that his best friend (Rowley) was just as wimpy as Greg wasn’t going to make this any easier. Greg is always getting into embarrassing situations, and just seems to be at the wrong place, at the wrong time. When Greg is not embarrassing himself, his family seems to do it for him. He has a crush on a girl in his class at school, Holly Hills, but she doesn’t even notice him.

Mr.Heffley’s boss has sons that are very much into sports, but Greg is not the sporty type. His dad wants this to change, so he signs Greg up to play soccer. Greg is not excited about playing soccer. He is horrible at soccer, so he had a plan so that he wouldn’t have to play in the game. He asked the coach if he could be the back-up goalie, because the boy that played goalie was very good and Greg figured he could get through the season by sitting on the bench. Just when he thought that he had it all planned out, the goalie was hurt during the game. The coach had no choice but to put Greg in the game. Greg’s team was up by a few points, so he figured that with only two minutes left on the clock what kind of damage could he really do? He wasn’t paying attention and protecting the goal like he should have. The other team scored, and Greg caused them to lose the game. This ruined the team’s winning streak, they were undefeated until they put Greg in the game. Greg’s dad wasn’t happy that soccer wasn’t able to change Greg’s wimpy ways. His dad knew a trouble making kid that lived in the neighborhood. The kid was sent to boot camp because his parents were tired of him getting into trouble. Greg’s bad luck streak was growing longer, because his father had ran into the kid that had just gotten out of boot camp. The boot camp totally turned the child around. Mr.Heffley thought that boot camp may do the trick for Greg. His father told him about the camp and that he had signed Greg up, and that he would be shipping out at the beginning of summer vacation. Greg was horrified of going to boot camp.

Greg was upset that he was going to spend his summer vacation at boot camp. He wanted to do something to change his dad’s mind. Greg thought that if he joined the boy scouts that his dad would be happy and not send him off for the summer. He joined the boy scouts and earned his first merit badge in sculpting. He was very proud of himself, and he couldn’t wait to show his dad. His dad wasn’t as impressed as Greg was hoping. Greg thought that if he went camping with his dad that he could show off the skills he learned from the boy scouts, and that his dad would not send him to boot camp. So Greg’s dad planned a camping trip for them, but also for Rodrick. They packed everything they needed and headed out to the campsite. When they got in the car it began to rain. They had a water-proof tent, so they weren’t worried about the rain. But when they got to the campsite it was flooded. They decided to go to a hotel for the night. When they got to the hotel Mr.Heffely had to go to the front desk for extra blankets. While he was gone Rodrick was looking through the peep hole in the door, while Greg was changing into his pajamas and brushing his teeth.

All of the sudden Rodrick says “Greg, Holly Hills and her family are in the room right across the hall!” Greg was in his underwear (and only his underwear) when he went to look out the peep hole. The next thing he knew Rodrick opened the door and kicked him out in the hall closing the door behind him. Greg was locked out and Rodrick would not open the door. Greg had to hide behind the snack machine until his dad came back so he could get back in the room. When they got home the next day it was time to go to the neighbor’s party. At the party all of the adults lined up to make faces at the baby and try to make him laugh. Mr.Heffely disliked this part of the party because Mr.Snella always videoed the entire party. He told Greg that if he could get him out of this that he would owe him big time. Greg could not think of anything that would work. Right about that time Manny was grabbing the wrapped presents. Greg tried to stop him, but Manny threw the present out the window. Greg walked outside to get the present, but it was up in a tree. He began to climb the tree when he got stuck and his pants fell down to his ankles. He started to call for his dad. It was great timing because his dad was the next in line. Everyone at the party saw his underwear, and Mr.Snella got it all on video. Since Greg was so embarrassed his dad took him straight home. His dad thought he had done this on purpose, so Greg did not get sent to boot camp.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is the first graphic novel in the titular series by Jeff Kinney. Since its initial publication in 2007, Diary of a Wimpy Kid has become a New York Times bestseller and 16 sequels have followed in the series. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is written in a diary format and documents the misadventures of middle school student Greg Heffley , who longs for popularity and hatches dozens of schemes to achieve his goals. The series is known for its humorous cartoons, relatable characters, and for exploring themes of popularity, acceptance, family, responsibility, friendship, adolescence, and learning to do the right thing. Over 250 million copies have been sold, making it one of the most successful book series of all time. The series includes several film adaptations, including an original 2010 film of the same name, and the series won an ALA Notable Book Award as well as the 2010 award for Most Favorite Book Around the World. The version used for this guide is the hardback of the Amulet Books imprint of ABRAMS.

At the beginning of the school year, middle school student Greg Heffley begins writing in a journal to document his daily life. Greg complains that he is stuck in middle school with a bunch of “morons” and that he’s only writing in this journal because he’s sure he’ll be rich and famous one day and he doesn’t want to have to answer stupid questions. Greg thinks he is better than his classmates, but he also acknowledges that he isn’t the most popular student. Greg decides to focus on gaining popularity, and as the school year progresses, Greg rolls out one scheme after another in hopes of finally earning a name for himself as a popular kid.

At home, Greg has to deal with his very traditional dad, his protective mom, his obnoxious older brother Rodrick, and his baby brother, Manny. Amid the chaos of his home, Greg often leaves his house to find peace, and he spends a lot of time with his best friend Rowley Jefferson . Greg complains that Rowley is uncool and doesn’t seem to care about popularity the same way Greg does, and Greg often blames Rowley for getting in the way of Greg achieving popularity. Still, Greg is perfectly content to use Rowley to get what he wants, and he enjoys playing jokes on Rowley.

As the school year goes on, Greg finds himself in a series of unusual situations. He and Rowley are chased by teenagers on Halloween night, Greg has to wrestle a strange student named Fregley in Physical Education, and his mom forces him to sign up for the school play. Each step of the way, Greg actively tries to avoid being embarrassed, but he often ends up causing his own humiliation in the process. He soon finds that popularity in middle school is much harder to figure out than he originally thought, and before long Greg’s quest for popularity starts to drive a wedge between him and Rowley.

In January, Greg breaks Rowley’s hand in a freak Big Wheel accident, but he takes no personal responsibility for his actions. When Rowley has to start wearing a cast, Greg grows jealous of the attention Rowley is getting at school. In February, Greg and Rowley try to become cartoonists for the school newspaper, but Greg is so obsessed with controlling the project that he drives Rowley away. In March, while serving on the school’s Safety Patrol, Greg abuses his power and terrorizes a bunch of kindergarteners. Instead of owning up to his mistake, however, Greg lets Rowley take the fall for his actions, and Rowley decides to stop speaking to Greg. As the school year draws to a close, Greg realizes that Rowley is becoming far more popular than him, and all of Greg’s attempts to get attention at school have backfired.

One day, Greg and Rowley are cornered by the same teenagers that attacked them on Halloween night, and Rowley is forced to eat a moldy piece of cheese that has been sitting on the school’s blacktop for over a year. Greg knows that Rowley’s reputation will be ruined if anyone finds out what happened, so he takes the fall for Rowley and tells everyone in school that he threw the Cheese away. Greg becomes a social outcast because everyone believes he has the “Cheese Touch,” but Greg doesn’t mind. In the end, Greg and Rowley become friends again, and Greg realizes that being popular isn’t worth the hassle. He decides he would rather have Rowley’s friendship, and he can always remind Rowley of what really happened to the Cheese.

The novel begins with Greg Heffley getting ready for his first day in middle school, when he is teased by his older brother, Rodrick, because his mother bought him his school supplies. Greg also has a spoiled little brother called Manny, who gets everything he wants and never gets in trouble. His father Frank does not enjoy Greg’s lifestyle of playing video games all day instead of going outside and playing sports.

During his first day of school, Greg is forced to sit with the school nerd called Fregley , whom he tries to keep distance from. He isn't sure whether his friend Rowley Jefferson will be able to fit in in middle school, because he considers him to be immature. As a way to boost their popularity, Greg and Rowley decided to join the wrestling team, but Greg quits the team after he loses a match against Fregley.

On Halloween, Greg and Rowley go out for trick-or-treating, but they are bullied by teens who spray them both with a water-filled fire extinguisher. Greg threatens them by telling them that he is going to call the cops, but the teens begin chasing them. Greg and Rowley both hide at Greg’s grandmother’s house until the teenagers leave.

During Christmas break, Greg and Rowley decide to play a game in which Rowley has to ride a bike while Greg tries to knock him off. While playing, one of the balls that Greg throws gets under the front wheel, causing Rowley to fall off and break his arm. When he returns to school with a cast, the girls started nursing him (carrying his books, etc) which makes Greg jealous. After Rowley heals up, he and Greg join the safety patrol in which they walk the younger kids to their homes.

One day, while walking the kids home, Greg decides to scare the kids by chasing them with a stick with worms. A neighbor contacts the school and tells the principal about his behavior. As punishment, the school principal fires Rowley from the safety patrol, because Greg was wearing Rowley's safety patrol jacket when he chased the kids, the neighbor saw Rowley’s nametag on the jacket. Greg wants to come out and tell the truth, but he doesn’t. It after a while, Greg confesses; Rowley is hurt and stops being friends with him.

Greg tried to becomes friends with Fregley to make Rowley jealous, although he makes him uncomfortable. He then auditions for the school production of The Wizard of Oz , where he lands the role of a tree.

During the opening performance, Rodrick brings a video camera to film the play. Greg, due to his nervousness about singing, confuses the other actors, who also fail to sing. Patty Farrel, who plays the role of Dorothy, gets frustrated and insults Greg. So, Greg throws a prop at Patty and then everyone gets into a fight.

The teenagers from Halloween come back, and this time, they force Greg and Rowley to eat a piece of cheese that was on the ground. The cheese had become moldy since it had been left on the ground years ago. Greg says that he can’t because he is allergic to lactose and he can die if he eats it. The teenagers leave when Rowley eats the cheese. The other students notice that the cheese is missing, thinking that someone destroyed it. But Greg tells them that he decided to throw it away because he was sick of seeing it there. Because of this, nobody suspects Rowley of having the dreaded “cheese touch.”

Greg and Rowley resolved their issues and make plans to spend the entire summer vacation playing games.

“Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel” is a young adult novel by Jeff Kinney which follows the misadventures of middle-schooler Greg Heffley as he attempts to adjust to his Uncle Gary moving in, and finding a date for the Valentine’s Day Dance. It is the seventh installment in the “Wimpy Kid” series by Kinney. When the novel begins, Greg’s primary concern is dealing with his Uncle Gary moving in after Uncle Gary’s most recent failed business venture. Uncle Gary had borrowed money from Greg’s dad, Frank, to buy a Boston t-shirt stand. However, all of the t-shirts were misspelled, saying “Botson” instead of “Boston”. As a result, Uncle Gary is broke and needs a place to crash. At Greg’s mom’s insistence, Gary stays with the family.

Frank continually urges Gary to get a job, save money, and move out. Gary is more concerned with playing video games and sleeping on the couch in the living room, making it impossible for Greg to ever hang out there. Greg is also annoyed by the fact that his mom gives Gary an allowance without requiring Gary to do any chores. Greg is also annoyed by the dance unit that comes up in gym, because there aren’t enough girls for all the guys to be partners with. As a result, Greg must partner with another guy – an unpleasant thing for both of them.

At the same time, Vice Principal Roy announces that there will be special elections for student council, and all elected student positions. It is revealed that the existing student government skipped all their meetings to enjoy recess instead. Greg, ineligible to run because he has three detentions to his name, instead convinces his best friend Rowley to run. Greg intends Rowley to be a puppet politician, allowing Greg to make the real decisions behind the scenes. Rowley agrees to this, running for the position of Social Chairperson. He wins because no one runs against him. Eugene Ellis wins the presidency on a promise to stock all school bathrooms with soft toilet tissue.

After Eugene is elected, Mrs. Birch, the student council advisor, explains this will not be possible due to the cost. Eugene then confronts Mrs. Birch with the revelation that the teachers’ bathrooms are stocked with soft toilet tissue. Mrs. Birch agrees to a compromise: she allows students to bring in their own toilet paper from home. But this leads to a toilet paper fight, and makes the students in school realize if they want something, they will have to pay for it themselves. The student council decides on a Valentine’s Day Dance to raise funds. Greg spends the next few weeks doing all he can to round up a gorgeous date, but no girl will go with him. Greg even takes advice from Uncle Gary, dressing cooler and making it look like he is well-liked, but this does not work either.

Greg takes on Rowley as a wingman so the two can help each other find dates. Rowley ultimately reports that Abigail Brown is recently available. Since Greg doesn’t know Abigail well, he has Rowley suggest to her that the three of them go to the dance as a group. Abigail happily agrees. Greg hopes he will be able to keep Rowley at a distance in order to romance Abigail. At Rowley’s house, Greg is scared to see Rowley breaking out with chicken pox. He has Rowley wear a scarf and beach hat to cover them up. They then go to pick Abigail up. Abigail hits it off with Rowley, much to Greg’s annoyance.

At the dance, Abigail’s original date shows up with another girl. This causes drama, and causes Abigail to burst into tears. Greg decides to dance with her to make her feel better and get closer to her, but freaks out when he sees a red spot on her chin, thinking it is chicken pox. It turns out only to be a pimple. It turns out that Rowley also does not have chicken pox, but merely acne. Greg ends up coming down with chicken pox, however. He learns that Rowley and Abigail become a couple, but he is thrilled when Uncle Gary wins $40,000 from a lottery ticket, and moves out.
