WITH THE CRUTCH of hindsight, it is perhaps a good thing that the PV Sindhu biopic—rumoured to be in various stages of cre­ation from all the way back in 2017—hasn’t yet been made, for it is only now in 2024 that she will have the rarest opportunity to go from “India’s Greatest Female Athlete” to “India’s Great­est Ever Athlete”, gender notwithstanding. Because if Sindhu medals at the Paris Olympics later this year—any medal, even a bronze—she will have done what no man or woman from this country has achieved before: win three medals from individual disciplines at the Olympic Games.

But it isn’t just any medal that Sindhu is after. No. Only the ecstasy of that elusive gold, the age-old quest to find El Dorado, could’ve motivated her to pull herself up and dream on after having experienced a couple of nightmarish seasons.

One of the fundamentals of writing a screenplay, be it for the movies or even for the stage, is to insert a conflict worth resolving by the end. Up until the Covid-hit Tokyo Games in 2021, Sindhu’s career was seemingly free of turbulence, the girl from Hyderabad seeking and finding perfection in her sport with a silver at the Rio Games in 2016 and a bronze in the following Olympics, along with India’s first-ever gold at the World Championships in Basel, 2019, which made her receive the country’s third-highest civilian honour in the Padma Bhushan in 2020.

All of this made her a role model for not just women but all aspiring sportspersons across the nation, many of whom picked up the badminton racquet because of her. But then, just when no one was expecting it, least of all Sindhu, by late 2022, the conflicts began to arrive in her life in spades.

First, in August of that year at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, Sindhu carried on against Canada’s Michelle Li in the final despite feeling a twinge in her ankle. It was worth it in terms of winning her only CWG gold, but that ankle was diagnosed with a hairline fracture, which meant months out of the sport to recuperate and a drop in the rankings. Then, when she finally returned in 2023, there was that very public on-court spat with Carolina Marin, the same Spaniard who had denied her gold at the Rio Olympics, and Sindhu even clashing racquets under the net at the Denmark Open.

The troubles worsened at the French Open in October last year, when she felt a niggle in her left knee while she took on Supanida Katethong of Thailand. Somehow, she marched on to win the first game but the pain soon made her forfeit a match mid-way for the first time in her career. The knee injury was a bad one, forcing her to miss two months of action and also bid to protect her rankings just outside the top 10.

If that wasn’t already a Herculean challenge for the 28-year-old—young in life years but properly middle-aged in terms of being a singles player in her sport—there was further upheaval back home as Sindhu reassessed her team, overhauled it, and for the first time in her life, moved out of Hyderabad and shifted base to Ben­galuru late last year to train under the watchful eyes of Prakash Padukone, her new mentor. With this new-found guidance, along with a new full-time coach in Indone­sia’s Agus Dwi Santoso, both life and career have begun to settle once again. But Sindhu hasn’t forgotten the period of heavy tumult, which she calls “the lows”, or use them for fu­ture learnings, which the best tend to do when dealt with a lousy hand.

“From the bad days I have learned to be patient,” Sindhu said in an interview with First Sports . “This is where the mental aspect of things is important be­cause there is a lot running through your mind when you aren’t playing. I needed to accept it but, still, men­tally I was worried and sad. But the lows teach you to become stronger in the future, and recently, there have been a lot of downs.” It was Padukone, India’s first cham­pion at All-England back in 1980, who reached out to Sindhu in October last year and asked her if she needed help after he had read in the newspapers that she was feeling mentally tired. The work began in the form of pep talks and only gradually moved on to the court, Padukone’s mentoring having such an effect on Sindhu that she decided to stop flitting between her home in Hyderabad and Bengaluru for these sessions and move lock, stock, and barrel.

Sindhu has proven that she isn’t shy of putting in the hard yards and overcoming large obstacles. How she deals with the tests of the next few months, followed by the biggest one in Paris in July, will come to define her legacy. Already she is a pioneer in India, inspiring men and women of all ages to be better at what they do. If she medals in Paris, she will be immortalised

WHAT MAKES SINDHU a true icon is the fact that she isn’t just willing to learn, but also un­learn. Apart from all the mental conditioning, Padukone also had to get her to forget some of the game­play instructions passed down by her previous coaches. “She was a bit confused about the strategy to adopt as she had changed coaches after the departure of Park Tae-sang and each one of them had advised her different things. So, my first job was to make her understand what strategy and tactics to adopt while playing different opponents,” Padukone told The Indian Express . “We had to work on her physical parameters to make her fit, which in turn will al­low her to play the attacking game that suits her best. My take is that whenever you are physically strong and you know that you prepared well for an event, automatically you become mentally strong.”

But all of this work and training was set into motion with one long-term goal. “Olympic gold,” said Padukone to the same daily. “Nothing less than that.”

Reprogrammed, it was now time to put Sindhu 2.0 to the test in the new year, under strict instruc­tions from her mentor to try and win every tourna­ment that she participates in before the Paris Games. So, she did. Her comeback began on February 18 in Shah Alam, Malaysia, at the Badminton Asia Team Championships, where Sindhu and young Anmol Kharb gave India a historic first gold medal by beating Thailand 3-2 in the final. She has now travelled back to where her body had broken down last year, the French Open. And shortly, she participates in the All-England Championships, where a win has thus far eluded her. But this time, she will have a former winner of the tournament in Padukone travelling with her.

Even then, each subsequent challenge will only get tougher and at this point, the odds are stacked against the 28-year-old. For, at its very core, singles badminton is a young person’s domain—the sport’s runaway No 1 in South Ko­rea’s An Se-young having just turned 22 is a case in point. But already, by simply tackling this slump and medalling in Malaysia, Sindhu has proven that she isn’t shy of putting in the hard yards and overcoming obstacles. How she deals with the examinations of the next few months, followed by the biggest one in Paris in July, will come to define her legacy. Already she is a pioneer in India, inspiring men and women of all ages to be better at what they do. If she medals in Paris, she will be immortalised. And if that medal happens to be gold, the new script for her long-pending biopic would’ve pretty much written itself.

The badminton star has dominated the courts for the last decade and is the only Indian woman to win two Olympic medals – a silver at Rio 2016 and a bronze at Tokyo 2020 – and a world championship title in 2019.

PV Sindhu has been winning trophies since her childhood, which catapulted her into the limelight at a very young age.

Where is PV Sindhu from?

PV Sindhu is from Secunderabad, which is the twin city of Hyderabad in Telangana, situated in the south of India.

However, there have been disputes regarding PV Sidhu’s birth state since Telangana was formed after separating from Andhra Pradesh.

Both states have laid claim to the badminton star, with some calling her a Telangana ‘bidda’ (kid in Telugu) and others countering by calling her an Andhra ‘ammayi’ (girl).

Pullela Gopichand later became her coach. He was the person who invested his most of time to train Sindhu. Firstly, she chose Mehbub Ali to learn the basics. She got the 5th Servo All India Ranking Championship in doubles, as well as a Single title at Ambuja Cement All India Ranking.

PV Sindhu: The Journey

Born to national-level volleyball player parents, Ramana and Vijaya, young Sindhu was always inspired by Pullela Gopichand to pursue a career in badminton.

She used to travel 56 km every day for her training at the All England Open Badminton Champion’s Academy. Her hard work bore fruit and she made her mark at the 5th Servo All-India ranking championship.

From here on, she raised her gaming standards higher and higher. She caught the attention of the entire nation by becoming the first woman silver medalist at the Rio Olympics in 2016 & then a bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020.

She also achieved a feat of three consecutive silver medals in official tournaments and matched the record of Lee Chong Wei. Sindhu came to international prominence after she broke into the top 20 of the BWF World Ranking in mid-2012 at the age of 17.

From a small girl who started playing badminton just as a pastime, to India’s first woman silver medalist at the Olympics, it has been quite an incredible journey for Pusarla Venkata Sindhu. There have been some downs, but mostly lots of ups for Sindhu. She has continuously proven her mettle as a world-class badminton player at every stage. Currently, she is ranked at number 2 by the Badminton World Federation.

PV Sindhu Coach: Pullela Gopichand

Sindhu was so inspired by All England Open Badminton Champion Pullela Gopichand that it was due to him she decided to play badminton professionally. However, she was guided by the simple and humble badminton wizard Mir Mahboob Ali, when she took her baby steps into the big world of badminton. He taught her everything and played a huge role in shaping her illustrious career.

She used to attend his training at the Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad. Sadly, the selfless mentor passed away in 2011.

After Mahboob Ali helped Sindhu ace her basics, it was Gopichand who helped her master the game. The badminton champion has trained numerous stars, including Saina Nehwal.

P.V. Sindhu was so dedicated to the training that she used to travel 56 km every day. This hard work and persistence have helped her gain success. No wonder, that her coach is also proud of her. Gopichand said,

“ As a coach, I treat both Saina Nehwal and  PV Sindhu as precious diamonds. Winning or losing happens every day at the Academy in Hyderabad. Win or defeat in game encourages the winner and loser to raise the bar and reach higher.”

PV Sindhu Badminton Career

Commonwealth games 2014.

It was Sindhu’s debut appearance at the games and she had to settle for a bronze medal. She lost to Michelle Li of Canada in the semifinals by 22-20, 22-20.

She did get a podium finish though by defeating Jing Yi Tee from Malaysia 23-21, 21-9, and winning the bronze.

BWF World Championships 2014

First, she defeated Bae Yeon-Ju 19-21, 22-20, 25-23. Then it was the turn of Wang Shixian to be ousted by 19-21, 21-19, and 21-15.

However, Carolina Marin showed superb class to beat Sindhu in straights sets.

Sindhu did get a podium finish and brought home the bronze medal.

PV Sindhu Rio Olympics 2016

In the semifinals, Sindhu defeated Wang Yihan of China 22-20, 21-19 and set a date to make history.

When she was fighting it out in the finals against the Spaniard Carolina Marin, the whole country held its breath.

She may have lost the finals 19-21, 21-12, 21-15, but she won numerous hearts with her silver medal.

BWF World Championships 2017

After a stellar performance throughout the tournament, Sindhu lost 19-21, 22-20, 20-22 to Nozomi Okuhara of Japan.

She did come home with a sparkling silver medal and made the country proud.

• Commonwealth Games 2018

The Gold Coast games were very special for the Indian badminton team. The team won a gold medal in the mixed event and Sindhu won the silver in the singles event.

It was a proud moment for Indians, as both the finalists were Indians – Saina Nehwal and P.V. Sindhu.

Saina went on to win the gold by defeating Sindhu 21-18, 21-19, but that day there were no losers for us.

BWF World Championships 2018

Once again Sindhu showed remarkable class to win a silver medal. This turned out to be her third consecutive silver in major events.

She lost to her nemesis Carolina Marin of Spain in straight sets 19-21, 10-21.

There have been many assumptions in the media about Sindhu losing out in the finals due to some mental block. Some reports suggest that she has cold feet when it comes to finals. It is ridiculous that instead of appreciating her achievements the media is overanalyzing her defeats. Defeats are a part and parcel of a sportsman’s life. Instead of letting them be anchors, they should be used as stepping stones.

Stellar badminton player Prakash Padukone showed a lot of support for Sindhu by saying, “ We should not put too much pressure on her when she is doing well. She is world number three. The focus should be on how we can make her win rather than why she is losing the final again and again. If we keep doing that, she would only feel more pressure .”

BWF World Championships 2019

PV Sindhu was entering the BWF World Championships 2019 at the back of four unsuccessful attempts at gold. Nonetheless, she didn’t carry the load of the past disappointments in the contest, as was evident in her confident play.

The shuttler swiftly made her way to the semi-finals, where she would face the competition’s most challenging task with the opponent being her dreaded foe Chen Yu Fei.

Like a tigress, she put up a pitch-perfect performance to outclass China’s World No.3 in straight sets of 21-7, 21-14 in a one-sided semifinal that lasted 40-minute.

Final Hurdle

PV Sindhu scripted history on 25th August 2019 by becoming the first Indian shuttler to clinch the badminton World Championships by defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in a one-sided final in Basel, Switzerland.

The Olympian was in total control for the entire game, winning the contest by a comfortable 21-7, 21-7. The game lasted just 38 minutes.

Life came full circle for Sindhu, who two years ago, was denied gold at the same platform by the same opponent at Glasgow. However, the only difference was that back then, the game was much more competitive, a fact reflected in the game time of an epic 110-minute. Nonetheless, the Indian evolved from the heart-rending loss with an emphatic win.

“Last time, I lost in the final, before that also I lost in the final, so it is a very important win for me. I want to thank the crowd for supporting me. I won it for my country and I am very proud being an Indian,” Sindhu said after the match. “A big thanks to my coach Kim and Gopi sir and my supporting staff and I dedicate this win to my mom, it’s her birthday today,” she added.

The phrase “third time lucky” indeed turned out to be true for PV Sindhu.

PV Sindhu’s Journey in 2022 & 2023

Sindhu clinched victory twice at the Syed Modi International and the Swiss Open, outplaying Malvika Bansod and Busanan Ongbamrungphan, respectively. Following a fierce quarterfinal win over He Bingjiao at the Badminton Asia Championships, she secured bronze after a tight loss to Akane Yamaguchi in the semis, marking her second medal at the tournament. Adding to her achievements, Sindhu triumphed at the Singapore Open, prevailing over Wang Zhiyi in the final match.

Her standout moment came at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, where she secured her first-ever gold in the women’s singles against Michelle Li. This victory made her only the second women’s singles player to claim a complete set of Commonwealth Games medals. Despite her unbeaten run in the mixed team event, earning India a silver, an unfortunate left foot stress fracture sidelined her from all subsequent tournaments for the rest of the year, including the World Championships and World Tour Finals.

Sindhu marked her comeback from injury absence by competing in the initial tournament of 2023, the Malaysia Open. In February, she contributed to the Indian team’s success, securing a bronze medal at the Badminton Asia Mixed Team Championships, a historic achievement for India in this tournament. Her first final appearance of the season came at the 2023 Spain Masters, though she faced defeat in straight games against Gregoria Mariska Tunjung.

PV Sindhu Gold Medal 2022: PV Sindhu has once again made the country proud by winning Gold Medal in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham. The badminton player defeated Michelle Li of Canada 21-15 21-13 in the final of Women's Singles to win a Gold Medal at CWG 2022. This is also PV Sindhu's third Singles Medal from the Commonwealth Games. She earlier won Bronze in 2014 in Glasgow and Silver in 2018 Gold Coast. 

PV Sindhu is considered one of India's most successful sportspersons who has won medals at various tournaments such as the Olympics and on the BWF Circuit. 

PV Sindhu's full name is Pusaria Venkata Sindhu. She is a professional badminton player from India. She was the first badminton player from India to reach the finals of the 2016 Summer Olympics and was also listed in Forbes' as the Highest-Paid Female Athletes in 2018 and 2019.

Who is PV Sindhu?

PV Sindhu is an Indian badminton player who is considered one of India's most successful sportspersons. She has won medals at various tournaments such as the Olympics and the BWF Circuit including Gold Medal at the 2019 World Championships.

PV Sindhu was born on July 5, 1995, in Hyderabad to PV Ramana (Father) and P Vijaya (Mother). Her parents have been volleyball players at the national level. Sindhu's father was a member of the team that won the bronze medal in the 1986 Seoul Asian Games. He received Arjuna Award in the year 2000 for his contribution to sports. 

PV Sindhu: Badminton Career

Sindhu at the age of eight started playing badminton. Under the guidance of Mehboob Ali, she started learning the basics of badminton at the badminton courts of the Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad. She travelled a distance of 56 km every day from her residence to the badminton courts to learn and practice the sport. 

PV Sindhu joined Gopichand Badminton Academy and won several titles under the 10-years category. At the Ambuja Cement All India ranking, she won the 5th Servo All India ranking championship in the doubles and the singles category. 

In the under 13-years category, Sindhu won the titles at the Sub-juniors in Pondicherry, doubles titles at the Krishna Khaitan All India Tournament, IOC All India Ranking, the Sub-Junior Nationals and the All India Ranking in Pune. In the under 14-years category, she won a gold medal at the 51st National State Games in India. 

At the age of 14, PV Sindhu entered the international circuit. She won a bronze medal at the 2009 Sub-Junior Asian Badminton Championships in Colombo. Sindhu won a silver medal at the 2010  Iran Fajr International Badminton Challenge. She made it to the quarterfinals of the 2010 BWF World Junior Championships in Mexico but lost to the Chinese opponent. 

In 2011, Sindhu won Maldives International Challenge in June and the Indonesia  International Challenge in July. At the Dutch Open, she made it to the finals but lost the match. At Swiss International, Sindhu won the Finals beating Carola Bott. She won the India International badminton event in 2011.

1- In January 2020, PV Sindhu was awarded the Highest Civilian Award in India-- Padma Bhushan. 

2- In March 2015, Sindhu was awarded the Fourth Highest Civilian Award in India-- Padma Shri. 

3- In August 2016, she was awarded the Highest Sporting Honour of India--  Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna.

4- In September 2013, PV Sindhu was awarded the Arjuna Award for outstanding performance in sports.

She has endorsed deals with several brands such as Myntra, Flipkart, Nokia, Stayfree, Panasonic, Bank of Baroda, Central Reserve Police Force, Vizag Steel, JBL, etc.

PV Sindhu: “Winning and losing is part of life… I choose to answer with the racquet”

Since her return from the Tokyo Olympics, PV Sindhu has been clocking miles faster than some of her on-court smashes tend to be. It’s been just over two months since the event ended and the badminton player has already been to Hyderabad (where she lives), Lucknow, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Mumbai, Tirupati and Delhi, where she had ice cream with the prime minister. It is part of an enduring celebration to mark an achievement that’s rare in India—an Olympic medal.

Her bronze in the women’s singles, one of India’s seven medals in the Games , can be seen as a triumph or a let-down, considering she has a silver from the 2016 edition and was expected to go one better. Sindhu was one of India’s brightest hopes at the Games, and she carried those expectations on her lithe 5’9” frame without the trappings or tantrums of stardom, finishing her run one match short of what was anticipated. “After the semi-final [she lost to Taipei’s Tai Tzuying] I was upset. My coach [Park Tae-sang] told me that there is a lot of difference between a bronze and the fourth position. It was tough to come out [for the next match]. When you lose, the feeling is different. But being on the podium is not easy,” she says. Sindhu subsequently defeated China’s He Bing Jiao for a third-place finish, looking heavenwards in relief as coach Park screamed with joy. She is now only the second individual, after wrestler Sushil Kumar, to have won two Olympic medals in post-Independence India.

India’s most marketable female athlete and among the world’s highest earning sportswomen, Sindhu ’s understated middle-class values root her strongly to reality and help manage unrealistic expectations from fans and the fraternity. Her parents Vijaya and Ramana played volleyball competitively, but as fate would have it, the younger of their two daughters trotted into an adjoining badminton court at age seven. That triggered a lasting relationship with the sport, inculcating in Sindhu a heady mix of skills, technique, speed, agility and the stamina to succeed. Coach Pullela Gopi Chand moulded the talent into adulthood, guiding her to second place in Rio and her highest ranking of world No2 in 2017.

Since then, Sindhu has worked on her technique, with help over the last year and more from Park. The pandemic, in a way, helped after she secured permission to practise at the Gachibowli stadium, which allowed her the ‘feel’ of a large arena. Unlike ‘normal’ times, international players could not gauge their opponents in the badminton circuit because there have been few tournaments since March 2020. “Due to the pandemic, we didn’t know how the [other] athlete was doing. That was different in Tokyo—everyone had different techniques and we had to be prepared for anything,” says the 26-year-old who has her sights set on Paris 2024.

The cross-country travel Sindhu has done so far is not new to her. Rio changed her life most significantly—personally and professionally, buoying her with fame and burdening her with expectations. The silver medal, which made her the first Indian badminton player to bring one home, elevated her stardom. She returned to be feted with a parade, riding atop an open double-decker bus in Hyderabad. “You see your name on billboards and children hold your posters... It was a different thing altogether. Five years later, getting a medal in Tokyo is another big thing. It’s not easy.”

“It’s not easy at all,” she repeats. “There has been pressure. Tokyo was harder than Rio because the responsibility has been a lot more. Everyone says, ‘We need a medal from Sindhu.’ Rio was my first time, so I was the underdog,” says Sindhu, who later clinched a gold at the BWF World Championships in 2019 that added further lustre to her glowing résumé. Sindhu is aware of the negative impact of fame and expectations on sportspeople, aspects most recently highlighted by tennis player Naomi Osaka and gymnast Simone Biles. It’s not easy to do it day in and out—train, travel, compete, ride the graph of successes and disappointments. “The scrutiny will be there and people will talk and watch out for you. When you are young, you think you want to be in the limelight and want to be number one. When you get there, you have to enjoy it. You don’t have to complain about it. Enjoy how it comes and let go of what is not needed,” she advises.

In the last year and a half, meditating has helped her stay calm. “There will be pressure at times and I think it’s okay...You should not think about what people want. Think about what you want and be focused. If you win, it’s good for you and for people out there,” says Sindhu, who has a measured, careful manner of speaking. What also helps is having a close-knit family. Her 10-month- old pet Labrador, Rio, a tribute to her first Olympic medal, is another useful distraction. She was asked if she would get one more in honour of Tokyo, but her dog-wary mother put her foot down.

This month, Sindhu will be back on the circuit with the Denmark Open and French Open. “Winning and losing is part of life,” she says. “At the end of the day, it depends on the individual. I choose to answer with the racquet.”

Sindhu has done her schooling from Auxilium High School, Hyderabad and college from St. Ann’s College for Women, Hyderabad. She started playing Badminton from the age of 8 and learned her basics from Mehboob Ali in Secunderabad. Later on, she joined Gopichand Badminton Academy and won various titles.

Badminton Championship Between Year 2013-2021

 In Asian Championship, 2013, Sindhu reached at quarter final. She won Malaysian title in the same year beating Singapore in Grand Prix Gold title. P.V. Sindhu participated in the 2013 World Championships and became India’s only second medalist in the singles event at the Badminton World Championships since Bronze medal secured by Prakash Padukone back in 1983.

P.V. Sindhu lost in the semi-final to ultimate champion Ratchanok Intanon. P.V. Sindhu was the captain of the team Awadhe Warriors in 2013 Indian Badminton League, where her team qualified for the semi-final. P.V. Sindhu won Macau Open Grand Prix Gold title on 1st December 2013.

P.V. Sindhu reached the final of 2014 India Open Grand Prix Gold. She got her first medal at the 2014 Asian Championships in quarterfinal. She reached at the semi-final of 2014 Commonwealth Games in the women’s singles competition, and claimed bronze medal. She participated in 2014 World Championships, Denmark. P.V. Sindhu created history by becoming the first Indian to win two back-to-back medals in the BWF World Badminton Championships.

At the 2015 World Championships, P.V. Sindhu again reached at quarter final. In November 2015, she won her third successive women’s singles title at the Macau Open Grand Prix Gold. She suffered a fracture in 2015, yet managed to qualify for the Rio Olympics, 2016.

In January 2016, Sindhu won the Malaysia Masters Grand Prix Gold women’s singles title. In the 2016 Premier Badminton League, P.V. Sindhu was the captain of Chennai Smashers team. At the women’s singles event, at 2016 Rio Olympics, P.V. Sindhu managed to get silver medal. It jotted down her name in history.

Sindhu clinched title at the 2016 Thaihot China and became only Indian player to do so after Saina Nehwal. With her consistent performances, she qualified for Super series Finals.

Badminton Championship Between Year 2017 – 2021

P.V. Sindhu won Syed Modi International, 2017 of Indonesia. In the India Open Superseries, she won the title in straight games. In April 2017, P.V. Sindhu achieved a career-high world ranking of number 2.

In the 2017 World Championships held in Scotland, she played for 110 minutes and attained 2nd longest Women’s Singles match in History of Badminton. She become the first Indian to win Korea Open. In August, she started working as Deputy Collector under the Revenue Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh.

At the All England Open Championships, she performed her best at the 2018 All England Open. She competed at the Commonwealth Games, 2018; won a Gold in the mixed team and silver in the singles event.

P.V. Sindhu secured 3rd place in the 2018 BWF World Championships. She won her 2nd consecutive silver medal, that was her fourth medal at the World. Sindhu scored 3rd place in the Asian Games 2018.

She created the history by securing first silver medal for India in badminton, Women’s singles. She qualified for the BWF World Tour Finals in 2018. She reached at the final in the 2019 Indian National Badminton Championships.

At the 2019, World Championships, she gained 5 th position. In the World Championship final, she became the first Indian to win gold medal. On 8th March 2020, she was named the BBC Indian Sportswoman of Year.

In April, P.V. Sindhu got elected as exclusive ambassador of BWF Committee’s campaign to promote fair play in the sport. In 2021, Sindhu was elected as one of the two ambassadors in the campaign “Believe in Sport” of International Olympic Committee from badminton. P. V. Sindhu – an Indian professional badminton player. She is the first Indian to win the BWF World Championships. She is also one of the two Indian badminton players to ever win an Olympic medal – the other being Saina Nehwal .

P. V. Sindhu won silver medal in women’s singles at 2018 Commonwealth Games as well as 2018 Asian Games . She was also a silver medalist at the 2017 and the 2018 edition of BWF World Championships. In 2018, she became the first Indian to win the BWF World Tour Finals after defeating Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the final.

P. V. Sindhu came to international attention when she broke into the top 20 of the BWF World Ranking in September 2012 at the age of 17. In 2013, she became the first ever Indian women’s singles player to win a medal at the Badminton World Championships. In March 2015, she is the recipient of India’s fourth highest civilian honor, the Padma Shri. Her silver medal win in the women’s singles event of the 2016 Summer Olympics made her the first Indian shuttler to reach the final of an Olympics badminton event and the youngest Indian to make a podium finish in an individual event at the Olympics. Early life and training:

P. V. Sindhu was born in Hyderabad to P. V. Ramana and P. Vijaya. Both her parents have been national level volleyball players. Her father, Ramana, who was a member of the Indian volleyball team that won the bronze medal in 1986 Seoul Asian Games, received the Arjuna Award in 2000 for his contribution to the sports. She has an elder sister, P. V. Divya, who was a national-level handball player. However, she was not interested in pursuing professional sports and became a doctor.

P. V. Sindhu lives in Hyderabad. Though her parents played professional volleyball, Sindhu choose badminton over it because she drew inspiration from the success of Pullela Gopichand, the 2001 All England Open Badminton Champion. She eventually started playing badminton from the age of eight. Sindhu first learned the basics of the sport with the guidance of Mehboob Ali at the badminton courts of Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications in Secunderabad. Soon after, she joined Pullela Gopichand’s Gopichand Badminton Academy. While profiling Sindhu’s career, a correspondent with The Hindu wrote:

The fact that she reports on time at the coaching camps daily, travelling a distance of 56 km from her residence, is perhaps a reflection of her willingness to complete her desire to be a good badminton player with the required hard work and commitment.

Gopichand seconded this correspondent’s opinion when he said that

The most striking feature in Sindhu’s game is her attitude and the never-say-die spirit.

After joining Gopichand’s badminton academy, Sindhu won several titles. In the under-10 years category, she won the 5th Servo All India ranking championship in the doubles category and the singles title at the Ambuja Cement All India ranking. In the under-13 years category, Sindhu won the singles title at the Sub-juniors in Pondicherry, doubles titles at the Krishna Khaitan All India Tournament, IOC All India Ranking, the Sub-Junior Nationals and the All India Ranking in Pune. She also won the under-14 team gold medal at the 51st National State Games in India.
