The most important ingredient when marketing your presentation, your workshop, webinar, or any live event is giving it a catchy name .

Did you know you could spend days and days writing the best copy on the landing page, bullet points of who it's for, why they should come, but most people will just see the name of the event and make the decision to attend or not attend based on that name! So you can see the name is vitally critical.

How To Create Catchy Names For Your Presentations... In 5 Minutes Or Less!

The other great thing about having a catchy name is it allows people to both remember and refer their friends and family to come . If you don't have a catchy name, people aren't going to remember it, and if they don't remember it, they can't refer their friends or family.

There are many ways that you can create this catchy name, but in this video, I just wanted to give you a simple yet powerful formula of how to do it. It's the same formula as this actual video or this blog post's name, which is "How to Create Catchy Names for Your Presentations... in Five Minutes or Less".

I'll break it down for you.

The first part is how to. People want to know how to do things these days . You can see a lot of the videos on YouTube, a lot of the blog posts are how-to videos, so why not spell it out for people and have it start off with how to?

The next part after how to is the verb. You want a doing word . In this example, I've got "How to Create", but we've created other event names, like "How to Become a Highly Successful Coach", so the verb there is become.

In this example, like this video, I've got "How to Create a Catchy Name For Your Presentation". That's the benefit.

People don't care about what you've got to teach, your feature. They don't care that you're going to talk about hypnotherapy or tarot card reading or anything like that. They only care about the benefit. What does that do? Does it get me six-pack abs, financial freedom, abundance? Am I going to predict my future and avoid catastrophes? Whatever it happens to be.

We've got "how to", a verb, like "create" or "discover", then a benefit. In this example, "Create a Catchy Name", and the last part, which is an optional part, is the time frame... ie how long will this take me? People want to get a specific time frame of when they can get their result. That's why I've got "How to Create a Catchy Name for Your Presentation in Five Minutes or Less."

I know that this works so many ways. We've created events called "How to Become a Highly Successful Coach". We've got this one, "How to Create a Catchy Name". Our very first event that we ran in 2009 with Authentic Education was called "How to Change for Good".

Using Alliteration

If you're wondering how you can make it a little bit more catchy, the most simple and powerful way I know is to just use alliteration, so having the same letter multiple times in the words that you use, like I've got "Create a Catchy Name". That's a lot better than "How to Make a Catchy Name".

How To Create Catchy Names For Your Presentations... In 5 Minutes Or Less!

You can always Google. Let's say you've got an event called "How to Get Six-Pack Abs", but you don't want to use the word get. You want alliteration, so all you got to do is type into Google, "Verbs starting with S." Instead of calling it "How to Get Six-Pack Abs", it could be something like How to "Summon Six-Pack Abs".

If you use this format, "how to, a verb, benefit, and a time frame", like "How to Create Catchy Names in Five Minutes or Less", you'll see people are way more interested in your presentation. They're way more likely to book your webinar or whatever you've got, and they're way more likely to show up to your next presentation, too.

I hope that really helps you, and until we meet again, just remember, you don't have to get it right. You just have to get it started.

Do your competitive research, assess your audience, review your own past results, dive into studies and examples, brainstorm with your team, use ai to spark new ideas, put your best event title forward for strong, high-converting events.

Doubtful that your event can have SEO value? Think again!

When ideating titles, keywords can be a strong informant of your naming strategy. If you're not an SEO expert, partner with an SEO agency, colleague, or content marketer who understands how to use SEO tools to identify important and valuable keywords. Then, use those keywords as you're coming up with ideas.

Here are a few SEO tools that you can play around with to start:

  • Keywords Everywhere : a browser add-on that shows search volume and other data
  • Ahrefs : free keyword generator option
  • SEMrush : free account allows you to search and track keywords
  • AnswerThePublic : free search listening tool

Google AdWords Keyword Planner is another tool that can help you gain insight into which keywords people search for when looking for events like yours. This can help you find the ones you want to hone in on as you're naming.

Sometimes something simple and clear is good, too!” says Joel Primack , Community Consultant. “For my community consulting client that hosts monthly IRL dinners, ours follow this naming structure: [Community Name] Dinner - [Month]. Super clear and understandable, as well as clear on the calendar invite that’s automatically sent to them once they RSVP.”

Want to convert more people into registrants ? Well, to do that, your event has to stand out against the pack. There's a lot of competition out there—but that also means there are a lot of examples for you to analyze!

To start, take a look at what event titles your direct competitors are using. You'll want to be sure that your titles are different enough to register with people. This doesn't mean go wayyyy out there and use a title that doesn't make sense at all for your industry, but if everyone's calling their event "The Basics of Data Analysis," what about naming yours "5 Things Your Data Analysis Might Be Missing"?

On the flip side, if you know there's a competitor event that does particularly well, maybe you can study the title to understand why it's resonating with people and then try to replicate that magic yourself—with your own flavor and brand style, of course. No direct copying allowed!

Sometimes, the answer you're looking for is right in front of you. Look to your audience to find out what they want from your event! Find out what types of events they're attending, what value they're looking to get out of events, and what their interests are.

Here are some ways to research what resonates with your target audience:

  • Review their social posts to find out what they're talking/asking about
  • Have your sales team ask prospects and customers during sales calls
  • Follow social media industry trends to stay on top of new topics
  • Track Google trends over time
  • Conduct an audience poll to get more direct information
  • Send out a survey for feedback after events

It might seem hard to get info from your audience, but people are usually more than happy to help. After all, the better you understand them, the better your event offerings will be for them. It doesn't hurt to ask!

I think about who we're trying to target with the event and what they can expect to get out of it,” says Maureen Mierke at Questline Digital “And then I also look at it from their perspective: If I was in their shoes, would this topic resonate with me? Would it interest me? Make me curious? Sometimes the titles are straight to the point and serious. Other times they're more playful; it just depends on the topic.”

Your existing event data archive is a treasure trove of info about what works for your audience. Comb through the data from past events to see if you can pull out any common threads among high-performing events.

You can also look back through your social media platform history to see which events got the most engagement. For example, if you usually get 10 likes and two comments but one particular event received double that, it might be a sign that that event's title, topic, or description really hit home for your audience!

You've probably got a lot of ideas from the research you've done so far. Sometimes nothing helps more than bouncing those ideas off of others and hearing what they've come up with!

Puns, alliterative titles, and rhymes are great brainstorming options. As titles, these can work well to draw audience attention. If you're feeling stuck during a brainstorming session, try a thesaurus or an online synonym finder. These can help you identify word options you've overlooked or wouldn't have thought of on your own.

“I'm always learning from the people I work with, and I want to share a method I learned about that I refer to as the 'James Rutter brainstorm.' I've used this now quite a few times, and it's one of the most effective approaches I've seen for a meaningful discussion because it allows individual contributions as well as collaboration,” says Melanie Reid, Event Marketing Manager at Riskified .

  • Recognize this was a brainstorm - look at all of the ideas you came up with that you can repurpose in the future.
  • Move forward with your decisions, and confirm next steps.

I know it seems simple, but you'll see more streamlined decision making once implemented!”

You can also brainstorm with the help of AI tools, which—unlike creative teams—never get tired of generating ideas!

We recommend using AI tools as more of a supplement to your naming process; it's more likely to give you a name that will spark an idea for you , versus delivering a polished final product you can use immediately.

While none of these felt like the right fit, they did get our wheels turning as to the main point of this post—which is to develop high-converting event titles—and the best way to lay that out in the title. If you're just starting out with AI, some tools to try are: Jasper, ChatGPT, and Notion AI.

Honestly, I’ve been loving ChatGPT,” says Isabelle Ballard at Marq. “I write the description for the event and come up with 10 options based on that. I can ask it to make them wittier or more serious. As a solo event manager on my team, it saves a ton of time. I usually end up tweaking them a lot, but it gives me a great jumping off point!”

While event success doesn't rely entirely on the title, it does make a huge impact. It's the first thing a person sees about your event and probably gives them a strong hunch as to whether or not they're going to be interested in the content. It's worth putting in the effort to come up with a strong, creative title!

10 Ways to Come up With Event Name Ideas

Branding is a vital component of any event and can contribute to its success in a number of ways. Coming up with a catchy name for your event is as tough as any event planning task, which is why we wrote this guide.

We are going to share some of the ideas we use when developing a name for events. It isn’t an A-Z list, more a series of ideas you can use to brainstorm event naming.

1.  Leave it till later

One of the most valuable pieces of advice we have picked up during our time in this industry is to not name or label the event right away. Do all your preliminary work, perform research, audience analysis, decide what you want the event to be, who you want to partner or sponsor with and then come up with a name.

By that time you will know a lot about your event and will have a much better idea of what name will work best.

2.  Dare to be different

It’s tough to stand out in the events business but if you can come up with a good name, you should use it. The usual rules apply of course, make it something family friendly, nothing that would offend anybody, something a sponsor would be happy associating with and so on.

Then check to see whether other events have been called anything similar and make sure you’re not using a name that has already been used. Finally, if you can also make it cool and sharable, all the better!

3.  Short and sweet

Short and snappy names work best. Something that is catchy, on point, sharable across social media, that looks good on a flyer and rolls off the tongue, all the better. Longer names can work but shorter names are easier to remember, can be easily hashtagged, are easy to say and can stick in people’s minds much faster than longer names.

4.  Initials and abbreviations

Checking initials and abbreviations is something every event planner does when coming up with a name. We look for any potential abbreviation, look at the initials and check any slang or shorthand. The last thing you want to do is come up with an awesome event name only to find when abbreviated it sounds like a communicable disease!

You can also use initials and abbreviations for names. Use just initials, remove vowels from a relevant word or be clever with a key phrase and use just initials.

5.  Play on words

Wordplay is great fun but also incredibly difficult to pull off. Double entendre, double meanings, changing a single letter to make the name stand out, changing a vowel for a number or something equally imaginative. As long as the event name idea works for the event and shows it in a positive light, you should be able to use it.

Puns also work well but require good balance to get right. If you can add a little humour to an event name, you automatically increase its potential to be shared and get the PR you’re looking for. It is also something that is very easy to get wrong.

6.  Try to avoid made up words

If you’re trying to name a business event, try to avoid made up words if possible. Too many companies use them and the city is tired of them. Most of them are nonsensical and smack of a lack of imagination and creativity. They don’t convey any kind of meaning either. Those are all things we don’t want from event names so avoid them where possible.

There are enough words in the world to be able to string one or two together to come up with an imaginative event name without having to make one up!

7.  Portmanteau

Technically, a portmanteau word is a made up word but it is made up of real words combined in creative ways. For example, PlayStation is a portmanteau word and is now a global trademark. PowerPoint, FireWire and others are equally recognisable. If you have a selection of shortlisted words for your event name and cannot decide between them, why not combine them?

This would be the only exception to made up words that we can think of. As long as your portmanteau word makes sense, is easy to understand and still gets the meaning across, you’re all good.

8.  Ask the audience

Asking your audience or holding a name competition is a fantastic way to generate names you would never have thought of. Offer a pair of tickets or other prize as inducement and crowdsource your event name. You will be amazed at the creativity that’s out there. We tend to become blinkered when we are deep into event planning so having an outside perspective is valuable.

Hold an Instagram Poll, hold the competition on Facebook, go on local radio or whatever you use to spread the word. Then let the new names roll in.

9.  Competition analysis

Competition analysis is a key part of event planning. We don’t want to hold the same kind of event as our competitors and we don’t want to use the same setup, naming convention or template that everyone else does. A key element of a successful event is originality.

However, looking at what other successful events like yours have been called could generate some new ideas. Use previous names as indicators or as inspiration and come up with something original and memorable.

10.  Vet and check

Once you have your name, check it for any possible negative or rude connotation. Check the initials as mentioned above, check it for any previous events that didn’t perform well and have someone from the outside sanity check the name before you commit.

We have said it before and we’ll say it again. When you’re in the middle of the planning phase of an event, it is too easy to become blinkered. Having a fresh perspective to check, vet and edit your name and any marketing material you’re planning to use could save a lot of red faces!

You might not give much thought to your presentation title for a conference presentation. The conference organizers will have asked you to provide a title and an abstract for the conference programme and you manage to slap something together just before the deadline.

But your presentation title can determine whether you have a smattering of people attending, or standing room only.

The good news is that it’s not that hard to craft a presentation title. There are a number of tried and tested formats which are easy to adapt to your topic. This is the way professional copywriters write headlines. They don’t start from scratch. They have a collection of previously used headlines (called a swipefile) and then they simply work out which type of headline will work best for their current topic. Next time you’re in the store, check out magazines like Cosmo. You’ll see the same alluring headlines time and time again.

I’ll show you how this can work by taking one topic and generating a number of possible presentation titles by applying the different formats.

The topic is teaching bioethics in secondary schools. I have a good friend who’s an expert on this topic and gives presentations at conferences around the world.

1. Promise benefits

Dale Carnegie’s famous book “How to Win Friends and Influence People” is still one of the best-selling communications books on Amazon. The title of the book is a big part of it’s success. That title works because it promises benefits. It’s not enough to say:

That’s ho-hum. Adding benefits to the title makes it sing:

How to teach a bioethics class that makes students think How to be an inspiring bioethics teacher How to engage and inspire your students through teaching bioethics

2. Promise a story

We love stories. You probably already know that telling stories is a powerful presentation technique. But you can also use the power of the story in your presentation title. For example:

How a poor school turned delinquent teenagers into philosophers How a burnt-out teacher reconnected with the love of teaching through bioethics

If you’re presenting a case-study, this format is ideal for your presentation title. Here’s the format “How A got to B”. Make “A” and “B” as far as part as possible by adding adjectives.

3. Put the number three at the front

Consider this title:

Sounds kind of boring and academic, but what if you put a number in front of it:

Now your prospective audience member is thinking “I better know what those three critical concepts are”. Even if they’re an expert in teaching bioethics they’ll want to find out the three concepts a fellow expert considers critical.

Three is the ideal number of major points to cover in a presentation, and five at the outside. If you try and cover more you won’t be able to do justice to each point . It’s better to go deep, rather than wide. See my post When is it OK to break the rule of three-part structure .

4. Provoke curiosity

If you’re revealing new research in your presentation make the most of it. People want to hear what’s new. They come to conferences to be at the cutting-edge.

If you’re a teacher of bioethics how could you resist going to that session?

That title works because of the curiosity that it evokes. You can exploit the natural attraction power of curiosity even if you don’t have cutting-edge research to reveal. For example:

5. Evoke concern

This type of presentation title makes people want to to come to your presentation to check that they’re not making big mistakes. It’s a powerful strategy. For example:

Mix ‘n’ Match Presentation Titles

You can use elements from these different types of title and mix them up. For example, many titles can be improved by adding the number 3. For example:

Add contrast to your titles

Adding contrast adds the element of surprise to your title. For example, I can improve this title:

by changing ‘students’ to ‘teenagers’:

Putting the words “students” and “think” next to each other doesn’t generate any surprise. But put the word “think” next to “teenagers” does.

So simply by applying these formats I’ve generated eleven possible titles. You can do the same. Once you’ve generated some titles, choose the one that resonates best with you and then plan your presentation to fulfill the promise that you’re making to your audience in the title.

How to Create Catchy Presentation Titles

I love words. And unfortunately, when I started out as a speaker, my presentation titles were stuffed full of them.

While there is not one formula for how to create catchy presentation titles to capture the attention of companies and event organizers, using too many words is a surefire way for your pitches and speaking submissions to land in a decision maker’s trash.

I’ve recently been purging old files, and in the process, unearthing my old speaker one-sheets and proposals. I’ve found some real title doozies!

2012 was a particularly “big year” when it came to keynotes. I had 10 listed and described on the speaking page of my website. And most of my titles were 15 words or more. (As you’ll see below, I also was collecting colons like they were going out of style.)

For example, for what would become my Discover Your ‘Secret Sauce’ as a Speaker signature presentation, instead, I had—

Share Your Story, Morning Glory: How to Use Public Speaking to Effortlessly Attract the Right Clients.

This was also the year I developed my Step into Your Moxie® keynote. But rather than call it Step into Your Moxie or How to Speak with Moxie, instead I was sweet on my colons again and went with the mouthful—

Step Into Your Moxie: Listen to Your Voice, Sculpt Your Message and Speak with Confidence and Impact.

Each time I run The Spotlight Speaker Accelerator and work with coaches, consultants and experts on creating catchy presentation titles for their keynotes and business and association presentations, I see many of the same mistakes I made.

Here are three tips for creating catchy presentation titles for your speeches that event organizers, meeting planners, and business leaders will love.

Create a title that zeroes in on your “idea worth spreading .”

While it’s okay to have some pizzazz in your presentation title, you still want it to accurately reflect the key idea you want your audience to take action on and not be too open for interpretation.

Let your title communicate your point of view on your topic.

Decision makers get pitched oodles of similar topics, and it’s easy for speakers and their submissions to sound alike. When your title reflects your unique voice and, if appropriate, how you are taking a fresh (and maybe even disruptive) approach to a familiar topic, this will help you and your presentation to stand out.

And last, but most certainly not least…

Use titles that contain 8 words or less.

While, unfortunately, this isn’t always possible, in-demand speakers rarely have excessive words and colons in their titles. Rather, their titles are short, clear, and crisp.

The name of your discussion event is one of the most important things you can have. It will be a reflection on how well you do in this industry and it’s something that people are going to remember for years after they first meet you or hear about you. So, what should you consider when naming your company?

Consider the following points while naming your next big brand:

Know what makes a good name

Thousands of name suggestions are there on the internet. But the question is if they are worth considering? The answer is yes! You need to know why certain names work better than others before choosing them.

For example, “EvaCool” sounds like an obvious choice but does not tell much about the services offered by the company. On the other hand, “EvaGamer” tells more about her work.

  • Think about the target audience
  • You must think about who would buy from you.

Brainstorm and make a list of company names

You may want to brainstorm with friends and family members. Or you could use online tools such as Google search engine. There are many websites where you can find thousands of ideas. Just type in keywords related to your discussion event and see which ones come up.

Once you get some idea, choose the best option among all of them. If you don’t feel confident enough then ask someone else to help you out. They might give you some great advice.

Play with words to get the best name

There are different ways to play around with words to create catchy names. For instance, you can combine two words together to form a new word. This way, you can add meaning to the combination.

Another thing you can try is using acronyms. Acronym means shortening of a long word. Using these abbreviations helps you save space and time.

You can also consider using a dictionary for related adjectives and synonyms.

Keep on narrowing the list of names down

After coming up with several options, narrow down the choices based on the criteria mentioned above. Choose only those names that fit into your niche market. Also keep in mind whether any of the names sound too similar to each other.

If you still cannot decide between two names, go ahead and pick both of them. Then later, you can change the name once you start getting customers.

Of all the slides in a PowerPoint presentation, the ones that are without a doubt the most important ones are the first and the last one. It makes perfect sense – the title slide sets the general tone. Make it boring and you’ll loose your audience’s attention within the first few minutes. If you’re making it exciting and innovative on the other hand, you’re taking a big step towards giving an amazing presentation and having an engaged audience. It is very similar with the final slide. It will be the one that people are going to remember most, the one that is supposed to make people leave the room thinking ‘Wow! What a great presentation!’ A bad ending could even mess up what would otherwise be a good performance overall (just think of a good TV show with a bad ending…).

The most common mistakes for title and final slides

If you asked 100 people what belongs on your PowerPoint’s title slide, the majority would answer ‘The title, maybe a subtitle, the presenter’s name and company, the date’. That kind of title slide is alright, but you usually say all of these things in the beginning of a presentation anyway. Also, it is very likely that most of your attendees know these things – they usually signed up for it after all. So what’s the point in listing all of that information on your title slide, when you could also use it for making a stunning first impression? Not only the title slide is commonly designed in an uncreative and conventional way. Too often, you can see PowerPoint presentations ending with the ‘Any Questions?’ or even worse – the ‘Thank you for your attention’ slide. ‘Thank you for your attention’ is a set phrase that has been said so many times it can’t possibly be delivered in an authentic way anymore. Therefore, it’s better to think of something else for your grand final. Finding an unconventional ending that suits your presentation style makes you seem much more charismatic and authentic than using an empty phrase.

1. An inspiring quote

An inspiring quote on your slide is a perfect way to both start and finish your presentation. Well, it does not have to be inspiring. It could be any quote that is somehow connected to your presented topic. Just have fun looking through books and the internet to find interesting quotes that you want your audience to hear. 2. A blank slide

This might seem strange to some people, but a blank slide can be really powerful if you want to have your audience’s full attention. You can use the advantage of blank slides by incorporating them at the beginning, in the end or even in between your regular slides. You can either use a blank slide of your regular template (so there will still be some design elements on it) or go all in and make the slide completely black (or white).

3. A call to action

If the goal of your presentation is to really make your audience act in some kind of way, there is no better way to start – or better yet end your presentation than with a call to action. This can be literally anything from little trivial things like “Drink enough water during the presentation so your brain stays intact!” – which will lighten up the mood – to more serious calls like “Help reducing waste by recycling whenever possible!”.

Usually, it is the audience that asks questions after a presentation. However, you can also turn that around and ask your attendees instead. Open (or close) with a joke, a funny picture or a quote – whichever you feel comfortable with. It is usually best if it has something to do with the topic you’re presenting.

Make it either funny or over-the-top spectacular and catch the audience’s attention!

9. A bold statement, opinion, or piece of information

This is probably the best way to capture your audience from the beginning on. Start with a radical, crazy opinion or statement and then get your attendees hooked by telling them that during the presentation, they will learn why you’re right. It could be anything, really, as long as it goes well with your presented topic – from the statement “Everybody has the time to read 5 books a month” to “Going to college is a waste of time” or “The human species is not the most intelligent on earth” – Take whatever crazy, unpopular theory or opinion you have, throw it out there and (very important!) explain why you’re right. You’ll have your audience’s attention for sure and might even change some of their opinions about certain things.

10. No title and end slide at all

Yes, that’s a possibility as well. If you absolutely can’t think of any creative or otherwise good way to start and end your presentation – even after reading the tips mentioned above – then simply don’t. That’s right - no title and end slide at all. You can pull that of by simply introducing yourself in the beginning, then getting right into the topic (which makes a good impression, long introductions are usually rather tedious) and when you’re at your last slide just saying a simple ‘Goodbye, thank you and feel free to ask questions’.

Your own designer gives you the power to implement a number of slide improvements across the board.

If you don’t issue event presentation samples or templates, and you don’t have a dedicated slide designer, at least make sure your presenters know the basics of good slide design. If they don’t, you could end up with a lot of confusing, boring slides.

1. Add a poll or survey to a deck. Adding engagement to the beginning shows the audience they are an integral part of the presentation, and that you value their input.

2. Use bolder images in larger spaces. An eye-catching title background image is a good way to set the session energy.

3. Test any background images against your font , and use a font colour with a high contrast for whatever image it appears in front of. You don’t want black text disappearing against a dark background image.

4. Use consistent design and images . Funny images mixed with historical images, different fonts, and other mismatched things will be distracting.

5. Fonts should be easy to read from a distance . Keep your font large and clear. Sans serif fonts are often easiest to read. Cool fonts like Rock Salt can be hard to make out at some sizes. But…

14. Use a theme to tie your slides together . That does not mean use the exact same design for every slide. Make them similar and united in design but not the exact same.

15. Same = snooze . Vary your slides using things like image quotes, bullet points, and other layouts. Again, having slides with bullet point after bullet point puts your audience to sleep. In fact, Google execs are shunning bullets in their slide decks .

16. Use charts to display figures and data . Stats are impressive but showing numbers in relation to others in a visual way will make your point quicker than merely listing numbers.

17. Choose your color scheme carefully . If you’re working in PowerPoint, Microsoft has made it easy with preselected schemes of colors that work well together. If you’re unsatisfied with their options, you can add colors to the list. Be selective in how you use these colors. Even dandelions would  admit that yellow doesn’t make a good font color on a screen.

18. Add some video or audio , but also be prepared if it doesn’t work. Especially if it’s a critical part of the presentation, have a backup option. Test it thoroughly and at the event space.

19. Pan rather than resize large images . If you have a large image you want to include, don’t resize it to the point that it is unrecognizable. This is incredibly helpful when showing some of those long website homepages that are popular right now.

One of the most engaging tactics you can use in slide design is ‘the tease’. Sometimes, in presentations, you want a big reveal or you only want to show part of an image until you’re ready to talk about it.

Now, if you don’t want people to see it, you could just not mention it, right? But that does nothing to build suspense. Allowing your audience to see just a little builds anticipation and keeps them on the edge of their seats. You can do this a few ways:

Add a timed fade-in or fly-in on Powerpoint. With a click your content appears or flies in. But… this technique looks a little dated.

Use technology that allows you to write the missing data, stat, or info directly on the screen as your audience watches.

Mask your hidden content by layering identical images and then adjusting the transparency of the bottom image.To do this, copy your slide.

The bottom image should be set to something less than 100. This is a preference as to how masked you want to make it. Do you want your audience to be able to see everything only slightly shaded or completely blurred out? Next, ensure the top image’s transparency is at 100%. At the end you will have created something that looks like a peep hole over the content you want everyone to focus on.

Sure, you can use a giant arrow or highlight to draw attention to the area of your content you want to highlight but it’s not the same as covering some of the content only to share it in a big reveal later.

ABIDE BY THE LAW WHEN CHOOSING IMAGES

We mention using evocative images in presentations a lot, but an evocative picture is the easy part. Let’s take a moment to talk about copyright. For your images, you can’t just surf the web, find one, and add it to your presentation.

Wait. What?

Images are covered under several different types of copyrights, and if you don’t know which one you have, you could be in trouble with the owner of that image.

Royalty-free. This means the image is free and clear to use. There are no royalties or license fees to pay. Royalty-free images are often available across multiple sites. For instance, you may find the same image on Pixabay and UnSplash. Some sites will ask you to credit them. If they do, you can add a small credit line directly under the picture or at the end of your presentation.

Creative Commons License. This photographer or designer has made the image available to the world for free. But you should still check the publishing terms behind using it. Often, they ask for a credit or require the image to be used in a particular way (i.e. no edits).

Public-domain. If an image is over 70 years old, it may be available to use under the public-domain. However, these restrictions vary by country. In the US, most photos taken prior to 1923 are part of the public domain, but don’t assume old photos can be used free and clear.

Always check the permissions. There are many ‘historical’ and ‘memory’ projects you can tap into, particularly if you’re looking for a particular time period, event, or place.

Now that we’ve gone over the types of licenses you should look for, let’s touch on a few phrases you may encounter:

Attribution. This is the credit you give to the photographer or artist. When someone gives you use of their photo, they may ask for a specific attribution. They may even ask for a link. If you want to use the image, you need to give credit in the way they ask.

Commercial Use. Some visual artists do not want their images to be used for commercial use. If they say the image is available for commercial use, you can use it to make money. If they tell you for non-commercial use only, you may only use it in ways that you would not derive money from it directly.

Some will stipulate non-commercial, non-editing, which means you can’t edit the image either. No changes may be made to it when using. This can include altering the colors to align with your theme.

Recently, presenters at Google have made a switch: no more bullets.

Bullet points turn visual draws for the audience into speaker cue cards.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced at the 2017 developer’s conference that ”…stories are best told with pictures. Bullet points and text-heavy slides are increasingly avoided at Google.”

So what are they doing instead? If bullets are bad, what do Google execs suggest?

Lots of white space. It provides for a dramatic backdrop and makes things easier to read.

Bite-sized concepts or phrases are easier to digest and make a larger impression than long paragraphs. Don’t lose your audience in the words.

Evocative images. A photo conveys emotion in a much stronger more memorable way than words.

Animation or video. These options have all the engagement hype of images, but they entertain as well.

Less than average. The average person uses 40 words per slide. (This point is only 16.)

Bullets Require Multitasking

Bullets require multitasking (reading slides and listening to the presenter).

And guess what? Turns out, we’re not that good at that.

On the other hand, if you use slides as the emotional cues behind your presentation, your slides won’t be competing for attention with your speaker. The images will set the stage for the emotion you’re trying to evoke, and the bite-sized bits will give the general idea behind each concept.

Once the attendee grasps those, they are free to listen to what the speaker has to say. Their brains won’t need to choose between reading or listening.

Boost Retention (And More) With Images

In addition to giving our brains a break, it turns out images have a second benefit in presentations. They improve retention.

Cognitive psychologists have tested recall after presentations that put lots of info on each slide and those that put only key takeaways.

Viewers who saw slides with fewer words recalled more than twice as many key points as those who were given more text.

Those are big retention differences.

But that’s not all…

According to research from 3M (the Post-it Note people) visuals process 60,000 times faster than text. Finally, according to the Social Science Network, 65% of people are visual learners. So giving them something to look at will improve what they get from your presentation.

Move Your Presenters Away From Bullets

We mentioned earlier what Google was pushing instead of bullets, but how can you help your speakers make the transition? Here are a few quick tips:

Give each point a slide. They deserve it. Bullets denote major points, right? Why not give them each their own slide? Yes, that means more slides but it also means more visual interest and faster slide changes, which will keep the audience involved with their eyes on your screen.

Kill your darlings. Writers will tell you the hardest part of editing is removing your favorite pieces (“killing your darlings”), but if they’re not absolutely necessary, get rid of them. They’re just taking up space and detracting from your message.

Be unique. Bullet points are so boring. Everyone does them. And let’s face it, they’re easy. Who doesn’t love their entire presentation scripted for them so they can just read it right off the screen?

The audience, that’s who! Instead, try minimal words that engage the minds of your audience.

Find a TED talk in your industry. If you watch TED talks, you’ll notice there’s no reading off of Powerpoint cue cards. It’s all about the stage presence. Share a favorite talk with presenters so they understand what you’re looking for.

Remind them bullets don’t build rapport. If someone makes you laugh or feel at ease, you respond favorably to them. This can’t be done with a fat, floating period. If your presenters want to connect with the audience, a lot of words on screen isn’t the way to do it.

Use slides as jumping off points. Encourage your speakers to use commanding visuals on their slides as jumping off points for conversation.

Help presenters be the best they can be. Offer templates. Be open to discuss design with them, or put them in touch with someone who can help. Remember, your presenters may be subject matter experts, but they may need a little help when it comes to the features of Powerpoint or the aspects of design. They may have a creative idea but are afraid to try the tech behind it.
