Resume writing can seem intimidating, especially if you’ve never done it before. But it’s actually easier than most students think.
In fact, it can even be fun.
It’s gratifying to see your accomplishments, skills, and Core Career Competencies come to life on paper. You begin to realize just how much you’ve done and learned as a liberal arts student—and thus how much you have to offer to prospective employers (or graduate/professional school programs, as the case may be). You see with your own eyes how you are becoming career-ready.
There is work involved in resume development: thinking, planning, organizing, writing, editing, proofreading … and proofreading some more. But it’s all worth it in the end when you produce a document that clearly stands out and compels the reader to think: “I’ve got to give this person a call.”
Take a look at how to create a standout resume, broken down by the main questions you likely have:
- Resume Content
- Resume Format
- Examples of Solid Resumes

What Is the Purpose of a Resume?
As you get started working on your resume, you may (quite naturally) be wondering: “Why do I have to write a resume in the first place? What’s its purpose?”
One very practical answer is that employers expect you to have one; you can’t really, not have one! Résumés (and cover letters) are an ingrained, commonplace aspect of the world of work.
But the real purpose behind your resume is to help you quickly explain your skills and competencies, qualifications, and fit for a position being filled by a prospective employer. It serves as your formal introduction, and as a marketing tool for landing an interview.
(Note: Your resume can also help you reflect on your experiences and plan for future skill and competency development.)
Your resume is one of the primary tools you can use to showcase your career readiness in a tangible, compelling way. Remember: In CLA, we define career readiness as developing—and then being able to convincingly demonstrate and articulate—the following Core Career Competencies:
So keep these competencies at the forefront of your thinking as you create your resume.
Ultimately, you need to be able to demonstrate your career readiness, on your résumé and elsewhere (particularly on your LinkedIn profile, which is its own critical marketing tool in your job/internship search). You can’t just say you’re career ready; you have to show it.
With that challenge always top of mind: Which experiences—academic, engagement, and career—can you highlight on your resume to show prospective employers that you have, in fact, developed the Core Career Competencies (and other key skills) that signify career readiness? How can you effectively present what you have to offer to an organization?
That’s the true purpose of your resume.

I have worked with Vicki for several years as she truly is one of the best! She goes above and beyond with how she gets to know her client's, personally, in supporting them on their career path. For example, over the years she has taken the time to talk with me about not only my resume, but interviewing and job tips as well! She seems to be able to always come up with the "right" and correct words for every job situation and resume, which is amazing! I would highly recommend her to anyone!

What is a resume?
It's a marketing tool... for you! It's a document for you to present your skills, experiences, and qualifications to potential employers. It should demonstrate your potential while still being quick and easy to read. This article will give you a better idea of how to maintain your resume over the next several years.

An Evolving Document
Not only will your resume change over time, but it will change when you apply for different jobs, too! Catering your resume for each application is important, not only to impress recruiters, but to impress Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS's) as well.
Know Your Audience!
Pay attention to the skills required for different positions you're applying for, and make sure you're clearly describing the qualifications you meet in your resume. The closer you match to the language in the job description, the better!
Six Seconds
Research says on average, people give six seconds of their time to review a resume.
Therefore, ensure the document is as brief as possible and keep the most important information in the top half of the page .
It' s About You . . . But Not Really
While your resume is a document about you, avoid the use of pronouns like "I, me, my, we" etc.
This allows your resume to focus on important details and eliminate unnecessary wordiness and repetition.
Check Your Grammar
Pay attention to the spellcheck, and if you're unsure about something visit the Writing Center for feedback!
This document might be the very first impression you make with an employer, so be sure to put your best foot forward!
To Objective or Not to Objective
On resume examples, you might see an "Objective" statement, and others, there is a "Professional Profile.” Whether you include either of these sections depends on the situation and your preference.
Keep it Short, Simple, and Easy to Read!
- Rarely will a resume need to be more than 1- page long
- Use simple fonts, such as Arial and Times New Roman
- strategically use underlining and bolding text to make things stand out
- Fonts should range between 11-14pt
- Divide up content with headers to direct the reader's eye from one section to another
- Be OK with sacrificing older jobs or experiences in order to keep it on a single page
- Use bullet points to describe your experiences, not paragraphs
Turn Back Time
Keep information on the resume in Reverse Chronological Order .
That means that things you are either currently doing, or are newest are toward the top of the section, and get progressively older as you read on.
- For example, your current on campus job as a campus tour guide would be above the high school job as a nanny that you just quit two months ago.
Avoid Templates
Microsoft Word or online resume builders might tempt you to use a template, but avoid them!
Templates often lock you into a rigid, inflexible format that is difficult to change.
The formatting in templates also makes your resume harder for ATS's to read, and might mean that a recruiter sees dozens of resumes that look exactly the same. Instead, use some of our resume samples and tips for guidance in creating your own personalized document!
- Draft your resume content in a Microsoft Word document and tailor your skills and experiences to the appropriate audience(s)
- Stop by the Career Development Center to have your resume reviewed by a career peer

Preparing Resumes
Think of your resume as a well-crafted marketing document for yourself. It’s designed to catch the interest of a potential employer and highlight skills related to your career interests. It connects your story to future employers and includes your academic achievements, volunteer experiences, extra-curricular activities, job history and internships. Often, employers initially scan a resume for only a few seconds so you need to communicate your story clearly and concisely to land the interview.
Looking for feedback on your resume? Contact the Career Development Center to set up an appointment.
- Consistency and clarity are key to formatting a resume.
- Keep it brief. A one-page resume should be plenty of room to discuss your experiences.
- Utilize action verbs to begin each of your bullet points, but vary your word choice.
- Tailor your resume to each position.
- Highlight your unique skills and how they would encourage success in the position for which you are applying.
- Continually update your resume with each new experience, accomplishment or position.
- Have your resume reviewed by the Career Development Center, a friend or professor. A second set of eyes can find mistakes you miss.
Although every person has unique experiences as students and professionals, there are a few topics that everyone should be addressing on their resume.
Name and Contact Information
- List your name, current or permanent address, telephone number and personal email address.
- List institutions you have attended including city and state in reverse chronological order.
- Include the degree you will receive/have been awarded.
- Optional Information: GPA (3.0 or above), course highlights, awards/honors, or study abroad.
- Describe work, internship, extracurricular, leadership and/or volunteer experiences.
- Include your title, name of the organization, location and employment dates.
Activities and Professional Affiliations
- Consider including optional sections that highlight your involvement outside of the classroom or place of employment.
- Consider including optional section that highlight skills not mentioned in other sections (examples: foreign language, computer skills)
Bullet points convey a concise yet complete description of experiences, transferable skills and accomplishments. Use the simple template below to create quality, informative and effective bullet points to add to your resume.
Additional Tips for Bullet Points
- Focus on your accomplishments, but make sure never to exaggerate your experience.
- Avoid using abbreviations. Assume the employer reading your resume is not familiar with the work you have previously done.
- Don’t state your previous salary or hours worked.
- Don’t use personal pronouns.
- Utilize compelling verbs to add interest to your resume.
Using action verbs makes your resume come alive. They keep the person reading your resume engaged and can help showcase your ability to be creative. Utilize the list below while crafting your resume to help showcase your talents and accomplishments.

- Resumes and cover letters
Your resume is an important tool used to market your experiences to prospective employers and demonstrate how you are qualified for positions. It is a professional written document that communicates your education, experiences, and skills related to the type of position you are seeking.
To Get Started:
- Make a list of experiences you’ve had—education and training, jobs, internships, research, projects, volunteer work, leadership, student organizations, etc.
- Think about what you contributed, what skills you used and developed, and your significant achievements from these experiences.
- Begin to craft your resume by organizing these experiences into sections. Avoid using a generic resume template. You may use one of the CSE templates listed below.
Keep in mind that the resume you use to apply for a particular position should address the skills and qualifications outlined in the job description; therefore, your resume is a fluid document that should continually change as you apply for different opportunities and acquire new skills and experiences.
Resume templates
You may use a customizable CSE resume template if you need help getting started.
- Template 3 (graduate-level)
Cover Letters
A cover letter is sent with a resume to introduce yourself to an employer. The purpose of the cover letter is to supplement your resume and demonstrate that you have the skills and experiences required in the job description. It is essential that a cover letter is well-written as it also serves as a representation of your written communications skills. When applying for a specific position, you should reference that position description while composing your cover letter to best tailor your skills and qualifications to the position.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Josh Rojas and Ty France each hit an RBI single during Seattle’s four-run ninth inning, and the Mariners beat the Minnesota Twins 10-6 on Tuesday night.
Cal Raleigh connected for a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh for Seattle, which has won three of four. Mitch Haniger hit a solo homer in the second and added a sacrifice fly in the ninth.
Ryne Stanek (1-0) got two outs for the win after fellow reliever Tayler Saucedo got hurt while covering first base. Andrés Muñoz pitched a scoreless ninth.
“We were kind of waiting for this game to come,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “At some of these points, you’re going to have to find a way to score a bunch of runs to pick up your pitching, and we did that tonight.”
Minnesota reliever Jorge Alcala (1-1) allowed four runs on four hits, issued two walks and threw a wild pitch during Seattle’s ninth-inning rally. The Twins have lost two of three after their 12-game winning streak.
“We didn’t play the kind of baseball we’ve been playing,” Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli said. “We didn’t play a complete game. We played pieces of a game.”
A wild three final innings was highlighted by a clutch swing for Raleigh, who was out of the starting lineup for a rare occasion. Raleigh hit for Seby Zavala against left-hander Steven Okert and drove a hanging slider to the third deck in left at Target Field.
“If you’re down in the game or the game’s close, he’s just got a way late in the game,” Servais said of Raleigh. “He has really good at-bats. He doesn’t always come through. But when he does, he usually comes through in a big way.”
Down 6-4 after Raleigh’s homer, Minnesota got a run in the bottom of the seventh and another one in the eighth.
Kyle Farmer’s double followed Jose Miranda’s leadoff double in the seventh. The tying run scored as Saucedo was on the ground in pain in the eighth.
Pinch-hitter Austin Martin hit a ball to France at first base. Martin slid safe into first while Saucedo took the throw from France and stepped on the bag. But Saucedo slipped in the process and went down. As he was on the ground, Max Kepler rounded third base and came home.
After several moments, Saucedo was helped off the field with assistance from a trainer.
“He’s going to be out for a little while; a little bit of a knee issue there,” Servais said. “We’ll get some imaging on that, but we’re going to miss him.”
Ryan Jeffers hit a three-run homer in Minnesota’s four-run third. Jeffers reached base safely in a career high-tying 14th straight game.
RIGHTY OR LEFTY
Jay Jackson started the seventh for the Twins, loading the bases on a pair of singles and a walk before Raleigh was announced as the pinch hitter. Baldelli turned to Okert to turn around the switch-hitting Raleigh. But the seventh pitch of the at-bat got away from Okert to the middle of the zone and Raleigh went deep for his ninth homer.
“They’re always going to do it to one side or the other, so it’s just part of the game,” Raleigh said, adding that he noticed Okert was warming up quickly and knew he might face the lefty. “I was able to get work in the cages, do some stuff and make sure I had both sides ready just in case that was to happen.”
Five of Raleigh’s homers this season have come from the right side, but he entered the day with a .921 OPS from the left side versus .662 from the right.
TRAINER’S ROOM
Mariners: Servais said SS J.P. Crawford (right oblique strain) has been swinging in the cage and is feeling good, but he offered no timeline for a return. Servais also said RHP Bryan Woo (elbow inflammation) might be in line for a return to the rotation but didn’t have a particular date.
Seattle right-hander George Kirby (3-2, 3.76 ERA) starts on Wednesday night in the third game of the four-game series. Minnesota counters with righty Chris Paddack (3-1, 4.78 ERA).

Taylor Swift bill is signed into Minnesota law, boosting protections for online ticket buyers
MINNEAPOLIS — People buying tickets online for concerts, sporting events and other live events in Minnesota will be guaranteed more transparency and protection under a so-called Taylor Swift bill signed into law Tuesday by Gov. Tim Walz.
The law, prompted by the frustration a legislator felt at not being able to buy tickets to Swift’s 2023 concert in Minneapolis, will require ticket sellers to disclose all fees up front and prohibit resellers from selling more than one copy of a ticket, among other measures. The law will apply to tickets purchased in Minnesota or other states for concerts or other live events held in Minnesota.
Walz signed House File 1989 — a reference to Swift’s birth year and an album with that title — at First Avenue, a popular concert venue in downtown Minneapolis.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that we would be at a bill signing for House File 1989 at First Avenue,” Democratic Rep. Kelly Moller, chief author of the bill, said.
Moller was among thousands of people who became stuck in ticket sales company Ticketmaster’s system after it crashed in 2022 amid the huge demand for Swift concert tickets and attacks from bots, which tried to buy tickets for resale at inflated prices. The situation led to congressional hearings but no federal legislation .
Supporters of Minnesota’s new law say the state joins Maryland as among the few states to pass protections for ticket buyers into law.
Ticketmaster did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the new Minnesota law. Taylor Swift’s media team also did not respond.
Jessica Roey, a spokesperson for StubHub, said in an email, “StubHub has long advocated for legislation that protects fans from anti-competitive and anti-consumer practices in the ticket buying process. We share the goals of HF1989 and look forward to continuing discussions with policymakers to advance policies that provide more transparency, more control, and more choice for ticket buyers.”
Walz, a Democrat, said the new law is “protection so you don’t get a bad ticket, a fraudulent ticket, and resellers can’t snatch them all up before you get an opportunity.”
Two young girls — one wearing a shirt that said “A LOT going on at the moment” in a nod to Swift, and another wearing a shirt that said “Iowa 22” in reference to basketball star Caitlin Clark — attended the bill signing with their dad, Mike Dean, who testified in support of the bill this year.
Dean said his daughter “came to me in December and said, ‘Dad, I want to go to see Caitlin Clark.’ As a father, I just couldn’t resist. And so I went online to go buy tickets.”
The tickets were supposed to cost $300 total, Dean said, but they ended up costing over $500 because of hidden fees. The timer had begun in the online checkout process, so he had just minutes to decide whether to buy the tickets or lose them.
He ultimately bought the tickets. But Dean said these practices mean customers can’t make informed decisions. The new law, he said, will bring transparency to the process.
The law takes effect Jan. 1 and applies to tickets sold on or after that date.
Adrianna Korich, director of ticketing at First Avenue, said she supports the new rules, saying fans are sometimes tricked into paying up to 10 times a ticket’s face value because of deceptive websites and resellers who list tickets without actually possessing them. The new law bans both, she said.
“We have all heard the horror stories from the Taylor Swift Eras tour and have seen the astronomical prices that are being charged at checkout,” Korich said.

Minnesota buddies have made fishing opener a 65-year thing.
Saturday, at the crack of dawn, these old boys won't be on the water. They'll be near it, in the same cabin at the same resort they've been visiting for decades. But they'll be in no hurry on this fishing opener to push away from the dock.
They're not worried. They'll catch their walleyes.
For 64 years running — 65 this opener — they always have.
Four of this bunch first met as kids in south Minneapolis. The year was 1957, a time when most blocks south of downtown had an empty lot, and it was there that kids could goof off, throwing their bikes in the dirt as they came to running stops, streetcars clanging in the distance.
In those years, the four boys had a serious hankering for fishing, and knew where to dig worms and collect them in tin cans they swung from their bikes' handlebars. Their hot spot was a pond in Lakewood Cemetery that they sneaked into for largemouth bass and giant sunfish.
"We weren't supposed to be there," Bill Voedisch said the other day. "But we knew we could outrun the cemetery people if we dodged among the headstones on the way out."
Years later, Voedisch ("Vodi"), Dean Sweeney ("Scrawn"), John Zollars ("Z") and Dave Johnson ("DJ") — the four schoolboy chums — would enter Southwest High School, and it was there that they cooked up the idea of taking their fishing addictions on the road.
Any road, as long as it led north.
So it was on an early summer morning in 1960 that Vodi, Scrawn, Z and DJ clambered into Scrawn's 1953 Buick Roadmaster and watched as the Twin Cities grew smaller and smaller in the hulking vehicle's rearview mirror, cigar smoke billowing out its windows.
Vodi was 15 years old. DJ and Scrawn were 16, and Z was 17.
Dwight D. Eisenhower was in the White House, and gas was 31 cents a gallon.
"We didn't know where we were going," Vodi said. "We had a big map we had unfurled, and had looked at different destinations. In the end we said, 'Let's go to Itasca County.' That county is loaded with lakes and we figured there had to be one where we could catch fish."
So began, for these fellows, the tradition of getting away on the season's first day to fish together, a ritual that for countless Minnesotans dates to statehood and before.
In the 1800s, White Bear and Minnetonka lakes were as far as some St. Paul and Minneapolis anglers ventured on opening day. As roads improved, Mille Lacs became within reach, then Gull and Leech, Winnibigoshish and Vermilion, and other lakes farther north still.
Outboard motors were so much a luxury back then that resort owners pulled rowboats full of anglers, one craft roped to another, onto these big waters to fish. For some of these fishermen, walleyes, northern pike, crappies and sunnies were easy pickings, while for others, not so much.
Regardless, the chill of opening morning, the swaying of tall pines encircling northern lakes and the tug of hungry fish gulping baited hooks flooded their senses, and when these opening day adventurers headed home, their intent was to repeat their experiences one year after another.
I first wrote about this gang of well-traveled anglers 15 years ago, when most were 65 or thereabouts. Now Vodi is 80, Scran 81, and Z is 82.
Filling out the present-day roster, Herb "Calf Man" Polzin, 82, joined the group in 1967, and in 2005, Terry "Bo" Beaudry, 65, signed on.
Unfortunately, DJ — hands down the best fisherman of the bunch, and the funniest — succumbed to cancer in 2004.
"DJ died the same day Rodney Dangerfield died, and on that day, the world lost two very funny men," Vodi said.
DJ's passing was for Vodi, Scrawn and Z a reminder that their time together won't last forever. Over many years they've watched each other's kids grow up, get married and have children of their own. Through it all, like clockwork, they've headed north for opening day, still excited like the kids they once were, to get away and fish.
This year, the 65th trip for the outfit's original members, is no different, except that unlike their first trip in 1960, they won't rely on fishing tips spouted by a tipsy local perched at the end of a bar 20 miles north of Grand Rapids.
"We had stopped at a resort that had a bar," Vodi said. "None of us had IDs, but we ordered beers, got them, and listened to an old guy tell us about Dead Horse Lake, where ultimately we ended up fishing, casting Bass-Orenos and Lazy Ikes and catching seven largemouth bass.
"Later we graduated to Spider Lake and then about 35 years ago to Williams Narrows Resort on Cut Foot Sioux, where we've been ever since, first in Cabin 3, now in Cabin 5."
During their working days, Scrawn and Z toiled for the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Bo still works there), while Vodi was at West Publishing, DJ sold Harleys and Calf Man, with a doctorate in animal science, peddled feed.
Now, mostly, in early May, the surviving original members and the add-ons think about fish and fishing, and about everything that accompanies opening weekend.
This includes a shared walleye dinner and come evening, a game of 500 or perhaps five-card stud.
In coming days, if their luck holds, they'll even return to the Twin Cities in the same vehicles they drove north, and not in a Greyhound bus, as they did one year when the jalopy they piloted on the fishing season's first weekend broke down.
But that's another story.
And memory.
