A PhD Student’s Perspective on landing an industry position

Yuxin Wang (UM Math PhD 2021) wrote to share her perspective and process on finding a rewarding career after graduation. Yuxin’s advisor was Sijue Wu. Yuxin’s words:

My PhD Student Perspective: landing an industry position

The purpose of this narrative is to provide a data point about career choices outside of academia. In particular, it tells the story of how a pure Math PhD student ended up with a position in the quantitative finance industry. 

Why industry 

Many people come to graduate school knowing that they would be a professor someday, and I was never one of them. While being a Mathematician is the goal, I was also aware of the scarcity of jobs in academia, so the idea of an industry job has also always been on my mind. The situation worsened when it came closer to graduation, since the academic job market had been hard hit by the COVID pandemic. With the fierce competition for postdoc positions, an industry position started to sound more like a real possibility. I thus started my industry job search in August just before my fifth year as a PhD student. 

How I prepared 

While the job search happened in my fifth year, the preparation started much earlier. Throughout the years as a graduate student, I attended career workshops every now and then to learn about the options that a Math PhD student typically have. One resource that has been particularly useful is the “Invitation to Industry” series held by the Erdös Institute and the Math department, where people with STEM PhD degrees would talk about what their jobs are, what it takes to succeed in their roles, how they ended up in their current positions, and thoughts on their career development process in general. 

From these talks, I came to understand that some of the most common industry job options for Math PhD students are quants, software engineers, and data scientists, all of which are computation related. As such, I have been taking computational courses either in school or online since my first year in grad school. These include, for instance, Scientific computing (where I learned Bash scripting and C/C++), Numerical linear algebra and differential equations, Stochastic process, Computational finance, Convex optimization, etc. None of these had been essential for landing an industry job, but a breadth of knowledge in these fields would certainly help. 

In hindsight, while taking classes was helpful, one could certainly learn faster through practice. In my case, I attended the bootcamp organized by the Erdös Institute, which was made available to us completely free, and which covered all the necessary programming, data science, and traditional machine learning knowledge. I had the chance to work in a team on a company-sponsored real world data problem, and as a pleasant surprise, the sponsor was impressed with our work and was willing to consider us for full-time opportunities. I did not end up working for the sponsor company eventually, but the exposure to real world problems proved helpful in my job search process. 

The bootcamp was by no means the only way of gaining practical experience. Many companies and research institutes offer internship programs, and these are excellent opportunities for one to practice their coding and analytical skills, to enrich their resumes, and to provide something to talk about in job interviews. 

About the job search 

When I attended the career talks, many speakers would depict their job search process as being smooth and straightforward. It is not true in my case. The first few weeks of my job search was daunting. I started applying to all kinds of industry positions in August, ranging from machine learning engineers to data analysts. I wanted to test the water first, so none of these positions were in my dream company, but it was still disappointing to receive rejection without even being interviewed. 

Stressed out, I reached out to more people on LinkedIn and used more help with reviewing my resume (U of Michigan career center and the Erdös Institute both offer such services). Then finally I started to receive interview invitations. As a hindsight, my previous rejections were probably partially due to the fact that I wasn’t as devoted to those positions; nonetheless, there are two things that I learned from this process:

  • Companies often receive hundreds and thousands of resumes for a single position, and most resumes are not even read by a real person. And the way to get my resume read is to either reach out to the hiring managers directly, or to use as many keywords from the job description as possible. I found a website called ResumeWorded (it is free thanks to U of Michigan career center), that rates one’s resume and makes suggestions according to the job description. I was shocked to see that my resume only got a 64% match to the job description, which probably explained all the rejections I got. I started to refine my resume according to every job description, and finally started to get invited to interviews. 
  • This is perhaps cliché, but the importance of networking is never to be underestimated. When people think of “networking”, many have the (understandably unpleasant) impression of crowded career fairs, networking events, or awkward phone calls; while in fact, networking can be spontaneous and even fun. I learned this through the “Designing Your Life Series” offered by Rackham – networking is like asking for directions in a foreign country. All we have to do is to be willing to introduce ourselves and talk with others. 

Eventually, my resume started to get noticed, and I interviewed for some quantitative researcher and data scientist positions. I did not get a single rejection from the companies that interviewed me, so I’m glad that I persisted despite all the rejections at the very beginning. Sometimes it’s not that we are incompetent, it’s that the right opportunity hasn’t come yet, and all we need to do is to learn from our own mistakes and keep trying. 

About the interviews

I will focus on my interviewing experience for the quantitative researcher positions only. 

My experience with SIG 

A year prior to my job search, I met Joey Thompson, a recruiter at Susquehanna International Group (SIG), at an “Invitation to Industry” talk (this is the same Joey as in Mark’s post ). Joey and two quantitative researchers at SIG came to give a series of talks about the company and their work as a quantitative researcher. I remember in the first talk with the Quant Finance master students, Joey asked if anyone knew the difference between an investment bank and a hedge fund, and nobody wanted to answer, so I raised my hand. At that moment, I was just trying to let the speaker feel welcome, having no idea that I would talk with him again in my job search. I guess this might have been a form of networking in a broad sense – and all I did was being willing to talk. 

After that, they held a brain teaser battle at Arbor Brewing Company, where Math grad students worked in groups to solve puzzles. The brain teaser battle was fun, and my group won the first place. Joey invited me, as well as some other Math grad students, to apply for their internship position; I ended up not applying right away since I felt under prepared. Looking back, it perhaps would have been a good idea to at least try to apply for an internship in my fourth year – check Mark’s post for how that would look like. 

I contacted Joey a year later to apply for the full-time quantitative researcher position, and was directed to an online assessment, which consisted of questions on Probability, Statistics, Calculus and Linear algebra. I received an invitation to the first phone interview shortly after completing the online assessment. 

Other than the online assessment, my interview experience with SIG is very similar to Mark’s . There are two rounds of phone interviews, a data exercise, and a full day of onsite interviews, which are virtual this year due to the pandemic. The level of difficulty increased gradually throughout the process, and I got the chance to work on some really interesting questions. I did stumble on some problems in the process, but the interviewers were willing to point me to the right direction, so not solving all the problems in the first attempt did not automatically disqualify me. 

General suggestions on interview preparation 

While I am not allowed to discuss any specific interview question, I would say that many of the quantitative researcher interviews contained questions in:

  • Probability. Most questions are just on probability calculation (i.e., not measure theoretic probability). Two resources that have been very useful in preparing for these kinds of questions are: A Practical Guide to Quantitative Finance Interviews , and 150 Most Frequently Asked Questions on Quant Interviews . 
  • Statistics. In addition to probability, knowing the basics of Bayesian statistics will be useful. Many companies also tested my knowledge on all kinds of regression techniques, so knowing how to derive them from scratch and how to interpret the results in a statistical sense would be helpful. 
  • Linear algebra. Math PhD students are in general acquainted with Linear algebra, but we tend to be more familiar with the abstractness than with the computation aspect. While the high level of understanding is crucial, it never hurts to refresh our memories of calculating eigenvalues, eigenvectors, matrix factorizations etc. I find the AIM QR exam in Linear algebra quite useful for this purpose. 
  • Coding. Since one common career path for Math PhD students is software engineering, I did a lot of practice on coding through Leetcode. A good understanding of the undergraduate-level algorithm and data structure is as important as the fluency in a coding language. In addition, knowing the basics about how computers work in general would be helpful. I learned some of these through GSI-ing for EECS 376, but there are other more direct ways to prepare. One resource that many people use to prepare for the coding interviews is Cracking the Coding Interview by Gayle McDowell. 

Final remarks  

People make career transitions due to various reasons. For me, the hit of the pandemic is a pretty random direct cause, but my previous efforts exploring the industry possibilities are not irrelevant. In general, transitioning into industry as a Math PhD, though not trivial, would not be difficult either, since the solid background in Math puts one into a great position to learn all the skills that are required to perform an industry job. Core and Advanced Graduate Courses: Definitions and Schedules

The 8000 level courses appearing in the tables below constitute the current working definition of the term core graduate course. A graduate course not appearing on this list will be called an advanced graduate course. Please refer to the full list of Mathematics courses 4000 and above .

To increase the predictability and the enrollment for core graduate courses, we will stay with the prescribed Fall/Spring schedule for core graduate courses. Advanced graduate courses may be offered on a less predictable basis.

Advanced graduate courses include three sub-classes:

  • Topics courses (title includes the word "Topics"). Examples include 8102, 8302, ...
  • Seminar courses (title includes the word "Seminar"). Examples include 9187, 9287, ...
  • Other advanced courses (title does not include either of the words "Topics" or "Seminar") . Examples include 8642, 8680, 8629, 8670...

It is allowable to list a Topics or Seminar course multiple times on your program of study assuming it is not a duplicate course covering the same topic. Topics and Seminar courses generally have subtitles describing the topic, to list two courses on the program of study it is sufficient that the subtitles are (significantly) different even if the course numbers are the same . On your transcript, only the course number and title appear. On your program of study, you should try to list the course number, the abbreviated title and the subtitle. For example:

  • 8102 Topics: Lie Algebras
  • 9487 Seminar: Morse Theory

This is a professional research degree designed to prepare students for various advanced professional careers, including college teaching and research.

Year 0 courses include basic advanced undergraduate material, which incoming Ph.D. students are required to master before engaging in graduate coursework.  Well prepared incoming students can petition to skip some or all of the Year 0 courses.  The Director of Graduate Studies will administer an informal exam to see if the students are sufficiently ready to skip Year 0 courses.

Year 1 courses will train students to develop a common solid foundation on basic graduate mathematics. The Ph.D. student is required to pass all 6 courses, and to pass qualifying exams in Algebra and Real Analysis. The qualifying exams will be given in May of each year, shortly after finals week.  There will be an opportunity to retake a qualifying exam in August just before the beginning of the Fall semester.  The Analysis qualifying exams will be from topics from Real Analysis I and Real Analysis II.  The Algebra qualifying exams will be from topics from Algebra I and Algebra II. Extremely well prepared students, with the permission of their initial adviser and the Director of Graduate studies, may take one or both qualifying exams in August before they start their first semester.  If they pass, then with the permission of their initial adviser and the Director of Graduate studies they may skip the corresponding courses in Year 1.

Year 2 and above are the post-qual core courses.  Every Ph.D. student must complete at least six of the post-qual core courses.  (Note that the parity of the year is determined by the beginning of the AY.  For example, Spring 2016 occurs in the beginning of AY 2015, and so would be considered to be in an odd year.)

The graduate student must further complete a course of study approved by the doctoral program committee and pass a comprehensive examination. The active areas of research interest of the current members of the staff are: algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, number theory, representation theory, analysis (real, complex, functional and harmonic), analytic functions, applied mathematics, financial mathematics and mathematics of insurance, scattering theory, differential equations (ordinary and partial), differential geometry, dynamical systems, general relativity, mathematical physics, probabilistic analysis and topology.

Note: Effective at the start of Winter Semester 2007, there is NO foreign language proficiency requirement for the Mathematics PhD. However, a student's Doctoral Committee still retains the discretion to impose a foreign language proficiency requirement.

Department of Mathematics

Information for prospective graduate students.

The Department of Mathematics offers the doctor of philosophy and master of arts degrees in mathematics. Most of our students pursue a Ph.D.

The Ph.D. program requires 72 credit hours of course work, including dissertation research. Doctoral candidates complete a core curriculum in algebra, analysis, and topology. After passing preliminary exams in two of these three areas, students study in their area of concentration. For Ph.D. candidacy students pass a qualifying examination involving either an oral examination in their specialty or an expository paper. Once students have qualified for Ph.D. candidacy, they concentrate on dissertation research.

WHY STUDY AT VANDERBILT?

  • The most recent (2010) National Research Council (NRC) report on U.S. math graduate programs places our department in the top group of graduate programs surveyed.
  • The Department of Mathematics has a distinguished international faculty that includes three invited speakers at the International Congress of Mathematicians.
  • The department has a variety of research groups: universal algebra, topology, group theory, geometry/topology, approximation theory, number theory, noncommutative geometry, operator algebras, mathematical biology, partial differential equations, and graph theory.
  • The stimulating research environment is supported by an ongoing program that attracts visiting scholars from institutions around the world and hosts several major conferences a year.
  • The Department of Mathematics has approximately fifty research faculty and forty resident graduate students. It is large enough to support a wide range of courses, but small enough for students to receive individual attention from faculty members.
  • Graduate students are given one to two years of training to teach at the college level. After that period, they generally serve as TAs and eventually instructors in calculus classes. This opportunity provides valuable experience in communication, even for students who do not pursue careers in academia.
  • Our graduate students are very successful in securing jobs.
  • Nashville offers the amenities of a large city and the friendliness of a small town.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Most Ph.D. students in mathematics receive a Graduate Teaching Assistantship and support is usually provided for a five-year period. Teaching assistants receive a University Tuition Scholarship (a service-free award that pays all tuition costs), student health insurance coverage and a twelve-month stipend. For 2023/24 the stipend is $34000. Some highly qualified applicants are awarded University Graduate Fellowships that provide an additional stipend up to $5,000. Also, the Graduate School awards several Provost’s Graduate Fellowships that provide an additional $5,000 to highly qualified students from underrepresented groups.

Students who do not have financial aid pay tuition of $2215 per credit hour.

GRADUATE STUDENT TEACHING

First-year graduate students participate in a weekly teaching seminar and conduct tutored study halls for calculus.

Second and third-year students serve as TAs. Responsibilities include attending class meetings, conducting a weekly recitation section, holding office hours, and grading papers.

Fourth and fifth-year students with good teaching evaluations and strong recommendations from their faculty mentors are assigned to teach a first-year calculus course.

Vanderbilt University’s libraries are among the top research libraries in the nation, home to more than eight million items, including print publications, microfilm items, and digital collections. The mathematics collection is housed in the Science and Engineering Library, conveniently located in the math building. This collection is excellent, both in books and access to electronic resources, including e-journals and online databases such as MathSciNet and Web of Science. Items not available locally can be borrowed through interlibrary loan, which is free of charge to graduate students.

Computational resources available to graduate students include access to the university’s large cluster and desktop computers equipped with computer algebra software and LaTeX. Graduate students may use these facilities freely for research, writing, and teaching.

Furthermore, the graduate students’ office suite is a newly renovated state-of-the-art facility.

VANDERBILT AND NASHVILLE

Vanderbilt is a private university, founded in 1873. The university includes the four undergraduate schools, the Graduate School, and eight professional schools.

Located approximately two miles from downtown Nashville, Vanderbilt is situated on 330 acres and is designated as an arboretum. A diverse student body of about 6,800 undergraduates and 6,200 graduate and professional students is taught by more than 4,300 full-time faculty members.

The metropolitan Nashville area, in the heart of middle Tennessee, has a population of over one million. The city, a center for music of all kinds, has many other cultural and entertainment opportunities, including theatre, film, museums, symphony, recreation areas, and three major league sports teams and one minor league baseball team.

Master’s Student Resume Samples

Your resume is individual to you, your experiences, skills, and education. These sample resumes are not intended to be used as a template. The job/internship description defines the content of the resume; therefore, you will have more than one resume as you apply for various opportunities. Using action verbs , providing context/details, describing transferable skills, and including results/impacts in the bullet points of the experience section are key elements to an effective resume. In addition, it is important to think strategically about who will be reviewing your resume.  

The sample resumes below show both strengths and areas for improvement, which are listed to the right of the document. For more information and assistance with writing an effective resume, we recommend that you view the formatting checklist and resume resources below. We also have online resume books connected with career fairs , so be sure to upload yours in advance of the relevant fair. Finally, we encourage you to schedule an advising appointment on our Handshake platform to have your resume reviewed by Career Services.

Here are some general formatting guidelines to get you started with the formatting. Remember to always be consistent throughout the document:

  • Your margins are at least 0.65” on all sides and your font size is at least 10pt.
  • Your section headers are all spelled correctly (spellcheck does not automatically check words in ALL CAPS).
  • You have provided your official degree (e.g. “Candidate for Master of _____”).
  • You have included cities and states for each experience and formatted them consistently. (Make sure locations are listed in the same place for each experience and use two-letter state abbreviations).
  • All your experiences have dates, including months or seasons, and are formatted consistently. (Be especially mindful of alignment, spacing, how you abbreviate months, and dashes: – versus – ).

  • Includes Presentations section given the nature of the field and if applicable for a research based role

Advice we might give for this MPH resume:

  • Move the dates from the degrees in the Education section to the right side (so that it is consistent alignment with the dates in the other sections)
  • Include relevant coursework under the Master’s Program in the Education section
  • Include a Summary Profile at top of resume to help give overview and highlights of experience

Master of Behavioral & Decision Sciences (MBDS)

When the PhD path leads to career struggles

A doctoral degree is a major commitment. Think carefully.

I appreciated reading Kara Miller’s The Big Idea column “PhD: Pretty heavily disappointed” (Business, May 22), about people with doctoral degrees struggling to build careers in academia. It made me think back to a conversation I had when I was about to graduate from high school.

I happened to run into a former track coach of mine, and as we were reminiscing he asked me what I planned as a major in college. “History,” I responded. He said, “Why don’t you take some computer classes also? It never hurts to be able to do something useful.”

I did not reflect on his motivation at the time, but my track coach was a young guy, and he was probably giving me advice straight from his own life, as a parent trying to raise his own young children. I did take computer classes in college and ultimately received a PhD in chemical engineering. I always remember that conversation as being a kind of turning point.

Earning a doctoral degree is a life commitment of great proportion. It can take, as Miller notes, between four and seven years. If we think of working life as roughly between the ages of 22 and 65, then a PhD requires more than 10 percent of a person’s working life. People need to think carefully about that investment.

Two powerful arguments in favor of the path of science, technology, engineering, and math are that there tend to be more STEM jobs for PhDs, and many universities’ STEM departments are generous in covering their PhD students’ tuition and cost of studies, including a stipend toward food, rent, and other expenses.

Not much has changed in 30 years

As I prepared to graduate in 1995 with a doctor of education degree from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, my mother memorably said to me, “Of my four children, you are the one with the most education and the smallest salary.” Apparently not much has changed in 30 years.

I must congratulate these students, however, on following their passion rather than following the money. I can’t help but think that their lives, though stressful, may contain greater happiness.

Not enough turnover from tenured professors, leaving little space for new faculty. Although the tenured, well-established professors are needed, it’s the junior faculty who are hungry and with new ideas that help build new programs. The whole graduate program model is a bad model. I worked two jobs, had my tuition and some type of minimal student health insurance and could barely cover the rent with my stipend, and the second job paid for everything else. Though I was working on many faculty projects, it was the faculty who said this would be good for me. Never did they say it was also good for them. (TravelerofNJ2)

I just retired from a tenured faculty position in science. I’m in my early 70s. I have colleagues who are still doing what they do well into their 70s, a couple approaching 80. There is no active incentive from the university to move the older faculty on, to make way for a new generation. (Lola-lola)

The next step is for adjuncts to go on strike across the nation and hold colleges and universities accountable. The current system is completely absurd. (Wordsmith2358)

I knew an attorney who managed a Cheesecake Factory. She had worked in food services through school. As an attorney, she really did not make that much money and was not doing the field of law of her choice. How many real estate closings can you do without dying of boredom? She went into management in the food industry and makes the same salary. (Antietem)
