Fully Funded PhD Programs in Public Health

Next in my series on  How To Fully Fund Your PhD , I provide a list below of PhD programs in Public Health that offer full funding to all admitted doctoral students.

Although there are many competitive, external fellowships in the ProFellow database for graduate and doctoral study, the best approach to funding your doctoral studies is to seek out PhD programs that offer full funding to all admitted students. When a doctoral program indicates that they provide “full funding” to their Ph.D. students, in most cases this means they provide students full tuition and an annual stipend for living expenses for the three to the six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

Columbia University, PhD in Environmental Health Sciences

(New York, NY): All PhD students receive full tuition, a stipend, and health insurance coverage. The amount of the stipend is set by Columbia University. Support is provided throughout the entire five years the student is in the program.

Harvard University, PhD in Biological Sciences in Public Health

(Cambridge, MA): All admitted students to the PhD Program in Biological Sciences in Public Health, including international students, are guaranteed full funding, which includes a stipend, as well as tuition and health insurance.

Indiana University-Purdue University, PhD in Health Policy and Management

(Indianapolis, IN): For full-time students only, the program will typically provide funding support in the form of tuition remission, a stipend to cover living expenses, and health insurance. This support typically requires a 20-hour-per-week work assignment.

University of Michigan, PhD in Public Health

(Ann Arbor, MI): Many doctoral students at Michigan Public Health are fully funded. All students admitted to one of our doctoral programs are considered for financial support. There are four types of financial support offered to students: graduate student instructor (GSI) positions, graduate student research assistant (GSRA) positions, training grants, and fellowships.

University of Toronto, PhD in Public Health

(Toronto, Canada): The University of Toronto has committed to a guaranteed minimum level of financial support to all its eligible, full-time doctoral stream students in the funded cohort, equivalent to $15,000 per year plus tuition for the first 5 years of study.

Yale University, PhD in Public Health

(New Haven, CT): All admitted PhD students are guaranteed four years of 12-month stipend and tuition support. In addition to grants and fellowships for tuition and living costs, students receive a Health Award, which covers the full cost of single-student Yale Health Plan Hospitalization/Specialty Coverage. Brown University, PhD in Public Health

(Providence, Rhode Island): Admitted doctoral students receive up to five years of guaranteed financial support through Brown’s Five-Year Guarantee. Financial support includes a stipend, tuition remission, a health services fee, and health and dental insurance subsidies as well as four summers of support. This financial support applies to domestic and foreign students.

Johns Hopkins University, PhD in Public Health

(Baltimore, Maryland): All full-time PhD students receive support for all years of the program. Funding includes full tuition and fees, health insurance, and a stipend for living expenses for students who remain in good academic standing. PhD students are required to serve as teaching assistants.

New York University, PhD in Public Health

(New York, NY): Students who are admitted to the program will be fully funded by a fellowship or a combination of fellowship and Research Assistantship for five years. During fellowship years, students will engage with their mentors and develop their scholarships and portfolio.

Pennsylvania State University, PhD in Health Policy and Administration

(University Park, PA): Students entering the Health Policy and Administration doctoral program are funded through graduate assistantships and have opportunities for additional funding.

Texas A&M University, PhD in Health Services Research

(College Station, TX): All graduate students offered assistantships must complete human resources and other training modules before they are processed into the payroll system. Total compensation for both types of assistantships includes a monthly salary of $2,008 plus payment of tuition and fees to cover the minimum enrollment requirement.

University of South Carolina, PhD in Public Health

(Columbia, SC): All PhD students are offered an assistantship for 3 or 4 years, in-state tuition, a minimum stipend of $5,000-$6,000 / semester, minimum $15,000 tuition supplement over three years, In addition, doctoral applicants are eligible for some competitive fellowships.

Boston University, PhD in Public Health

(Boston, Massachusetts): Students admitted to the Ph.D. program as full-time students will receive four to five years of financial aid in the form of fellowship or assistantship support. The financial-aid package will consist of a stipend as well as a scholarship to cover tuition, mandatory fees, and individual basic health insurance.

Oregon State University, PhD in Public Health

(Corvallis, OR): Most public health doctoral students are funded through teaching or graduate research assistantships, which include tuition remission and a stipend. Others are funded through scholarships and fellowships.

University of Florida Health, PhD in Public Health

(Gainesville, FL): Students are only accepted to our Ph.D. program if the department can provide a stipend and tuition waiver. Funding for Ph.D. students may come from intramural (fellowships, department funds, etc) or extramural (Grants) sources.

University of North Texas Health Science Center, PhD in Public Health Sciences

(Fort Worth, Texas): All students admitted to the Ph.D. program are provided a financial support package that includes four fully funded years of tuition & fees, a living stipend currently valued at $30,000 annually, and health insurance.

Vanderbilt University Fully Funded PhD in Epidemiology

Vanderbilt University, based in Nashville, Tennessee offers a fully funded PhD in Epidemiology. Upon completing the Doctoral Program in Epidemiology, graduates will be prepared to develop an independent research portfolio in academia, research, or industry. All students offered admission to the doctoral program in Epidemiology receive a full tuition scholarship, stipend, health insurance, and coverage of fees. All students, both domestic and foreign, receive the same financial support. The stipend rate is $36,500 annually.

Washington University, PhD in Public Health Sciences

(St. Louis, MO): They are dedicated to providing our doctoral students with full-tuition scholarships, four-year stipends, and professional development accounts. Base stipends for students are $30,000 per year, and additional funding is possible through paid research, teaching fellowships, and other internal and external support sources.

University of California Berkeley, PhD in Public Health

(Berkeley, CA): Doctoral students (PhD and DrPH) typically receive funding by soft-money grants, such as working as a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR) or teaching as a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI). Both options not only cover a fee remission but also provide a monthly stipend.

University of Kansas, PhD in Health Policy and Management

(Kansas City, KS): Population Health doctoral students are enrolled full-time and are funded either through half-time employment in the healthcare or related field, through assistantships in the private sector, or through departmental assistantships.

Funding for Doctoral Students

Many doctoral students at the University of Michigan School of Public Health are fully-funded, though because of the individualized nature of doctoral programs, financial aid and funding at this level is largely determined by our departments. Students are encouraged to connect with department coordinators to learn more.

All students admitted to one of our doctoral programs are considered for financial support. There are four types of financial support that we offer our students: Graduate Student Instructor (GSI), Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA), Training Grants, and Fellowships.

Graduate Student Instructor (GSI)

GSIs are appointed at 50% effort, which involves working approximately 20 hours per week. This appointment includes full payment of tuition, health insurance coverage, registration fees, and a monthly stipend. The duties of a GSI can include preparing materials for labs, teaching labs, holding office hours, grading homework and exams, and tutoring.

Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA)

GSRAs are appointed at 50% effort, which involves working approximately 20 hours per week on a research project. This appointment includes full payment of tuition, health insurance coverage, registration fees, and a monthly stipend. GSRAs generally work closely with a faculty member who is a principal or co-investigator on the research project. The duties of the GSRA can involve analysis of biomedical research data or statistical research. Currently, GSRAs are working on projects involving statistical methods development and application to bioinformatics, cancer, clinical trials, dentistry, diabetes, environmental health, epidemiology, genetics, health education, kidney disease, and survival analysis.

Training Grants

Some students are supported through involvement in training grants which provide support similar to the GSRA or GSI appointments. Check with your department for specific training grants available.

Scholarships, Fellowships, and Awards

Awards for tuition assistance are available and are granted without a work obligation. These awards are generally made on the basis of academic merit, expected contribution to the field, and to students with underrepresented backgrounds. Some examples of awards our students have received include:

Financial Aid for Doctoral Students

Many of our students are offered funding as GSIs, GSRAs, or graduate fellows. If you do not receive such an offer, you may apply for financial aid through the University of Michigan’s Office of Financial Aid. This office requires applicants for any and all types of financial aid to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) provided by the American College Testing Center (ACTC).

A FAFSA will be sent to you directly if you indicate your interest in financial assistance on the admission application form. FAFSAs are available from most high school or college libraries and financial aid officers, as well as from the School of Public Health Office for Student Engagement and Practice. FAFSA is also available at www.fafsa.ed.gov.

We require applicants to hold, or be about to obtain, an Upper Second class Honours degree, or the equivalent qualification gained outside the UK, in a related subject area for entry to a PhD programme. A Lower Second class Honours degree may be considered if applicants also hold a Master's degree with a Merit classification.

Entry requirements

Academic entry qualification overview, english language.

For applicants whose first language is not English, or if you have not studied recently in the UK, you must provide evidence of how you meet the English Language requirement.

We mainly accept IELTS or TOEFL tests. Please note IELTS and TOEFL are only valid for two years.

We require a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 overall or TOEFL (iBT) 90. Each component of the English test should meet the minimum requirement of IELTS 5.5 in all components, TOEFL (iBT 22). For the  writing component , we expect you to have achieved a minimum of 6.0 (IELTS).

If your IELTS or TOEFL expires before the start of your programme, you will need to take another official English test before we can issue you with a CAS for your visa application. This is a requirement of UKVI.

Our PhD/MPhil Public Health Research programme enables you to undertake a  research project  that will provide you will high quality training in all three pillars of public health and preventative medicine including health protection, health improvement including health information and health/wellbeing services. All of our postgraduate researchers attend the Doctoral Academy Training Programme delivered by the Researcher Development team . The programme provides key transferable skills and equips our postgraduate researchers with the tools to progress beyond their research degree into influential positions within academia, industry and consultancy. The emphasis is on enhancing skills critical to developing early-stage researchers and professionals, whether they relate to effective communication, disseminating research findings and project management skills.

Applicants are specifically matched with a Primary Supervisor and individual project based on their research interests and background.

Doctoral Programs

The Mailman School's public health doctoral degree programs provide tremendous access to renowned researchers and thought leaders. Through their course of study, doctoral students obtain the tools they need to create knowledge in the field and advance the practice of public health.

The School offers two doctoral degrees, the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and the Doctor of Public Health (DrPH). Both train candidates to create new knowledge and research, apply them to important public health issues, and identify and implement potential solutions. They differ only in emphasis:

• The DrPH programs place greater emphasis on the application of science to public health leadership, practice, and program development.
• The PhD programs place greater emphasis on creating new knowledge, with PhD recipients pursuing research and/or teaching as their career goal.

The DrPH can be obtained in:

• Population and Family Health

The PhD can be obtained in:

• Sociomedical Sciences

Degree Requirements

Graduates of the DrPH degree complete a minimum of 30 credit hours beyond the course work for the MPH degree or equivalent professional degree in public health.

The PhD degree is conferred by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences , as are all PhD degrees at Columbia University. Graduates of a Mailman PhD degree program complete a minimum of 60 credit hours that constitute the combined requirements for the MA and PhD degree. Students entering the PhD degree program with MA degrees from other universities may receive up to 30 credits of advanced standing.

• PhD Study in Sweden – A Guide for 2024

A PhD in Sweden is an opportunity to study in a country that combines a historic higher education system with a culture of ingenuity and invention. The country’s universities date back to the fifteenth century, whilst Swedish brands and technologies such as Spotify, IKEA and Bluetooth continue to shape the modern world.

This covers what you need to know about PhD study in Sweden , including information on applications, funding opportunities and doctoral fees (spoiler: there aren’t any).

PhD opportunities in Sweden – what’s on offer for 2024?

If the goal for your doctorate is to produce original and potentially innovative work (it should be) then a PhD in Sweden may well be the ideal choice.

Like its Scandinavian neighbours, Sweden is also a highly tolerant country, with progressive and inclusive laws that support LGBT rights and welcome international students and visitors.

Here's some reasons to consider a PhD in Sweden for international students:

• Creativity and originality – You may not discover the next big music streaming solution (and even a PhD may not help you understand *that step* in those IKEA instructions) but your doctoral research will be right at home in a country that celebrates free-thinking and supports new ideas
• Prize-winning research - Sweden's status as the home of the Nobel Prize (with 34 winners) reflects its proud history of recognising and rewarding research, excellence and innovation
• No PhD fees – Swedish PhD programmes normally charge no tuition fees to their students (regardless of nationality)
• Historic (and respected) universities – Higher education in Sweden dates back to the 1400s and the country’s universities are well placed in modern rankings, with particular specialisms in Medicine, Life Sciences and related subjects

We’ve studiously avoided making any ABBA references in this section, but if you want a university to take a chance on your research proposal and eventually give you, give you, give you a PhD without charging much money, money, money for fees*. . . well, there are worse destinations to choose than Sweden.

Swedish universities

There are 39 state-funded universities and equivalent institutions in Sweden, alongside a smaller number of privately funded higher education providers.

Degrees are organised using a three-cycle system , in common with the wider European Higher Education Area . Your PhD in Sweden will be a third-cycle qualification , usually taking place after Bachelors (first cycle) and Masters (second cycle) study.

Universities and university colleges

Higher education providers in Sweden are divided into two types:

• Universities ( universitet ) are large institutions awarding degrees in a broad range of subjects. They carry out original research alongside academic teaching and therefore have the capacity to support and train PhD students.
• University colleges ( högskola ) focus on technical and professional training, often in applied sciences and related subjects. They are less likely to award PhDs but may do so in certain subject areas.

The distinction between these two categories isn’t always obvious or clear from an institution’s name (university colleges may simply refer to themselves as universities). The good news is that you don’t need to worry too much about it. As a PhD student you’re likely to end up studying at a university, but the smaller number of doctoral programmes offered by university colleges are equally rigorous and respected.

Swedish university rankings

Sweden is home to one of Europe’s top-performing higher education systems, at least so far as university rankings are concerned. Of the 38 universities in Sweden, 10 rank within the current Times Higher Education world top 400.

PhD structure

A PhD in Sweden represents the highest level of academic achievement for students. As in other countries, the emphasis is on your independent research towards an original thesis that makes a new contribution to knowledge in your field.

Swedish doctoral degrees

Doctoral level study in Sweden takes one of two forms:

A standard PhD in Sweden requires a minimum of four years full-time work (equivalent to 240 ECTS credits ) and awards a full doctorate (along with the all-important title of ‘doctor’).

Alternatively, you may choose to study for a shorter licentiate degree. This generally only requires two years of full-time work towards a shorter and less ambitious thesis (equivalent to 120 ECTS credits ). The Swedish licentiate is similar to the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) offered in the UK or other countries and some students initially enrol for this qualification before upgrading to become full PhD candidates.

The academic year in Sweden runs from August to June with two teaching terms (August to January and January to June) separated by summer and winter holidays. As a PhD student you’ll normally work more flexibly throughout the year, but some additional courses and other activities may be linked to specific teaching periods.

Supervision

You’ll complete your PhD (or licentiate) with the support of two or more expert supervisors whose job it will be to guide your work. Their roles will vary slightly depending on your field:

• Supervisors for Arts , Humanities and some Social Science projects will serve primarily as mentors. They won’t be directly involved in your research, but they will be able to advise on the direction your project is taking.
• Supervisors for Science , Technology , Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) projects may also be carrying out similar research as the lead or principal investigator for the laboratory or research group your PhD is part of. This means they may also work alongside you or even collaborate on some experiments. However, your PhD thesis will still be an independent piece of work, based on your personal findings and analysis.

You’ll always have at least two PhD supervisors, one of whom will be the principal supervisor for your PhD. Some universities also appoint additional assistant supervisors with responsibility for specific tasks (such as training or pastoral care and support).

Your supervisors’ roles and expectations will be set by your university. As a minimum they’ll usually include arranging regular progress meetings, reviewing results and drafts and supporting you as you prepare to submit your thesis. Some additional responsibilities might include identifying and fulfilling training needs or assisting with other aspects of your professional and academic development.

Programme structure

Your main focus during a PhD in Sweden will be the original research required for your thesis. You’ll normally begin by assessing the scholarship in your subject (a literature review) before moving on to collecting sources or experimental data and eventually writing up your conclusions and results.

Some universities also offer more structured training alongside your research. This may involve attending short courses and / or attending short courses on research methods and other useful skills for your project.

It’s also common for PhD students at Swedish universities to serve as junior academic staff within their departments or faculties as part of their funding arrangements. If so, you’ll also have additional duties such as teaching or demonstrating.

Assessment and examinations

The assessment of a Swedish PhD is based on the quality of the doctoral thesis you submit at the end of your research. This needs to demonstrate that your work has been original, that it has made a significant contribution to your subject and that you have personally been responsible for designing and carrying out the research involved.

All of these qualities will be formally assessed during a final public defence of your thesis.

This is similar to the viva voce used in the UK and other countries but follows a slightly different procedure. Instead of being examined in private, you will present your thesis to an examining committee in front of an audience that may include other academics, fellow PhD students and your family and friends.

One of the committee will be an external expert (from outside your university) appointed to serve as your ‘opponent’. They will ask questions about your thesis and challenge you to explain your findings and conclusions. Other members of the committee (and audience) may also ask questions.

At the end of the examination your committee will decide whether or not you have successfully defended your thesis and can be awarded your PhD. This ‘live’ examination process may seem daunting, but you should think of it as an appropriate climax for your research, allowing you to assert your expertise and prove your qualification. It’s also quite rare for students to fail at this stage.

Fees and funding

There are no fees for PhD study in Sweden at state-funded universities (note that this doesn’t apply to Masters or Bachelors degrees). Doctoral programmes are free for EU, EEA and international (non EU) students.

The same applies to application fees – you don’t need to pay these for a PhD in Sweden.

You will need to cover your accommodation and living costs, but support may be available from your university to help with this.

Study grants

It’s common for PhD students in Sweden to also be recognised as staff, subject to an employment contract with their university. If applicable, this pays you to a salary known as a study grant ( utbildningsbidrag ) worth approximately €1,500 per month (but subject to tax).

Your employment status may vary during your PhD. For the first two years you will receive your study grant, but not be entitled to benefits and social security. For the final two years you will normally hold a full employment contract ( anställning ) and be entitled to support during illness, parental leave or other circumstances. In return for your study grant you will normally be required to carry out some responsibilities within your department, such as teaching undergraduates or assisting with administrative work.

PhD funding

Other scholarships and bursaries for PhD study in Sweden may also be available to help top up (or substitute for) a study grant.

The main source of PhD funding for international students in Sweden is the Swedish Institute (SI). They offer scholarships for students from specific regions including Turkey, the Balkans and the Baltic. More information is available on the official Study in Sweden website.

Applying for a PhD in Sweden

You should apply directly to universities for PhD study in Sweden. How you do so will depend on the kind of project you are interested in:

• PhDs in Science , Technology , Engineering and Mathematics will often be advertised as specific projects. You should view current opportunities and apply according to the guidelines set by specific adverts. This will often mean submitting a personal statement along with your academic CV and references .
• Students in Arts , Humanities and Social Sciences are more likely to put forward their own project ideas. You’ll need to submit a strong research proposal , perhaps after contacting a potential supervisor for guidance and advice.

However you apply, make sure you check the specific requirements and procedure with your university.

Admissions requirements

Swedish universities are free to set their own entry requirements for PhD study . The minimum qualification will usually be a Bachelors degree in an appropriate subject, but a Masters is also desirable – particularly if you’re applying for funding.

Just as important as your previous qualifications will be your ability to demonstrate previous research experience . This could simply be the dissertation project for one or both of your previous degrees, but it’s important that you can show some preparation for the independent research you’ll be doing on your PhD.

The general eligibility criteria for PhD applications in Sweden is similar to most other countries in the EU.

Language requirements

A large proportion of teaching at Swedish universities takes place in English. This means you won’t necessarily need to know Swedish to study abroad in Sweden, but it’s worth checking with the specific university or department you plan to study within. Even if English isn’t required, picking up some language skills will help you settle in and enjoy your degree.

If English isn’t your first language you may need to submit a recognised test score . Exceptions might be made if you’ve completed a previous university degree taught in English.

Your university may invite you for an interview as part of the admissions process (in person, or online). This is a good sign! It means your application is suitably interesting and impressive and the university wants to hear more from you.

Student visas

UK students will no longer be EU citizens from the 2021-22 academic year onwards. This means you may be considered as an international student when studying in Sweden. You may be subject to different visa requirements and fee rates, unless otherwise stated.

You won’t need a visa to study in Sweden as a PhD student (student visas are required for visits of less than three months, but your PhD is guaranteed to take longer than this!).

EU, EEA and Nordic students

If you’re a citizen of an EU, EEA or Nordic country (a group that includes Finland, Denmark, Iceland and Norway as well as Sweden) you won’t need a residence permit to live in Sweden during your PhD. However, you will need to register with a local branch of the Swedish Tax Agency ( Skatteverket ).

You’ll need to bring your passport plus any marriage or birth certificates (if you are married and / or have children). You’ll also need to bring proof of admission to a Swedish university and a signed declaration that you have sufficient funds to live on during your PhD (the minimum requirement is €826 per month ).

Other international students

Students from countries outside the EU, EEA and Nordic group must formally apply for a residence permit in order to study in Sweden for longer than three months.

You can do this online. You’ll need to provide copies of your passport, along with proof that you have been admitted to a Swedish university, have paid the first instalment of your tuition fees and can support yourself financially during your PhD the minimum requirement is €826 per month ).

Health insurance

All students in Sweden will need full health insurance. If you already hold a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) you will normally be automatically covered. Alternatively, your university may provide cover as part of your study grant, or offer an affordable policy for you to purchase.

Can I work in Sweden after my PhD?

EU, EEA and Nordic students can live and work in Sweden without restriction. Other international students will need to apply for a post-study residence permit , allowing you to stay in Sweden for another six months as you look for work. To obtain this you’ll need to have completed your degree, still be in Sweden and hold a valid passport.

America needs transformative leaders in preK–12 education whose passion for education quality and equity is matched by a knowledge of learning and development, the organizational management skills to translate visionary ideas into practical success, and a firm grasp of the role of context and politics in shaping leadership. Graduates of the three-year, multidisciplinary Doctor of Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education will be prepared to become those leaders.

The Ed.L.D Program — taught by faculty from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, the Harvard Business School, and the Harvard Kennedy School — will train you for system-level leadership positions in school systems, state and federal departments of education, and national nonprofit organizations. Ed.L.D. is a full-time, three-year program built on a cohort learning model. Cohorts consist of up to 25 students from diverse professional backgrounds (including district/charter management leaders, nonprofit directors, principals, teachers, and policy researchers) who progress through the program together.

All Ed.L.D. students receive a full tuition funding package plus stipends, work opportunities, and a paid third-year residency at a partner organization.

The Ed.L.D. Program prepares graduates to do work for the public good in the American public education sector, whether that be at the system or state level. Curriculum Information

The Ed.L.D. curriculum is a balance of multidisciplinary coursework and practice-based learning. Core courses and electives are taught by recognized leaders from across Harvard’s graduate programs in fields like data-based education reform, organizational change and innovation, and effective leadership strategies for urban schools. You will develop and test your leadership skills through team projects and an immersive third-year residency.

All students in the cohort take the same classes in four foundational content areas: learning and teaching, leadership and organizational change, politics and policy, adult development, and leadership inside and out (including one-on-one executive coaching). You will take part in a 10-month paid residency at one of our partner organizations. There, you will work on a strategic project which synthesizes your experience and learning into a written Capstone project. You will stay connected to your Ed.L.D. cohort and HGSE through technology and by returning to Harvard periodically for intensive workshops.

Paid Residency 

Our partner organizations include school systems and departments of education, as well as some of the nation's most influential and dynamic nonprofit, mission-based for-profit, and philanthropic organizations.

You will be intentionally pushed out of your comfort zones and asked to work systemically and make a significant contribution to the partner organization. In addition, the residency will provide you with the professional mentoring, practical experiences, and network of connections they need to position themselves as future leaders in the education sector. 

Strategic Project 

You will define (with supervisors from your partner organization) a strategic project on which to focus. You will have the opportunity to lead one or two major efforts on behalf of the organization, such as the creation or implementation of current initiatives. The project allows you to practice and improve leadership skills, add important value to the mission and strategy of the partner organization, work systemically, and hold high-level accountability.

During the residency period, you will produce a written Capstone. The Capstone is a descriptive, analytic, and reflective account of your third-year leadership contributions to a strategic project within an Ed.L.D. partner organization. It is a demonstration of your ability to engage others, develop strategy to successfully address and diagnose challenges, work toward a vision and goals, and learn from the results.

The Harvard Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) will prepare you for high-level leadership to make a difference in the fields of public health and health care. This first-of-its-kind, multidisciplinary degree provides advanced education in public health along with mastery of skills in management, leadership, communications, and innovation thinking. This is accomplished within a highly collaborative, small-group learning environment. The DrPH Program is a three-year program (with an option to extend to a fourth year) and during this time, students will learn how to address complex problems of public health policy and use advanced analytical and managerial tools to lead organizational and societal change. You will learn the scholarship of translation, assembling scientific evidence and using it to achieve real results in the field. Also, you will gain hands-on experience working to achieve a specific public health objective under the guidance of Harvard’s world-renowned faculty.

The Harvard DrPH is planned as a 3-year academic program (with an option to extend to a fourth year).  The first two years of the Harvard DrPH involve full-time, on-campus study as part of a collaborative cohort of approximately 9 – 15 students. The academic training will cover the biological, social, and economic foundations of public health, as well as essential statistical, quantitative, and methodological skills you will need to address today’s complex public health challenges, which rarely fall within neat disciplinary boundaries. You will also shape an individualized course of study in your second year by selecting courses to deepen specific areas of expertise and build skills that you will apply during your third year capstone project.

The DrPH Doctoral Project is the culminating experience of the Harvard DrPH degree program, and the primary locus of the knowledge translation elements of the degree. The pedagogical intent behind the Doctoral Project’s design is to provide an opportunity for the DrPH degree candidate to practice and develop personal leadership skills while engaging in a project that contributes substantively to advances in public health or healthcare.  

The optional fourth year are for students who need more time to complete their Doctoral Project.

You will have the skills to possibly start new organizations or work from within to change existing ones. Who Should Apply?

All candidates for admission to the Harvard DrPH should have, at a minimum:

• A master’s OR doctoral degree in the health sciences or in another related field or non-US equivalent.
• At least six years of full-time public health and/or public service experience in a relevant discipline .  Advanced degrees will not be considered in lieu of work experience as coursework will build directly on professional skills and experiences.
• Prior coursework in public health-related methods and in specific technical areas of public health is also beneficial.

Beyond the formal qualifications, we seek top applicants who demonstrate an appetite and vision to effect change, displaying the energy and creativity to have already moved along that path early in their careers. We also explicitly seek to admit students with interest and experience across a broad cross-section of public and private areas of public health and health care locally, nationally, and internationally.

All students admitted to the DrPH program, including international students, should complete the financial aid application process . For admitted students with financial need, 50% tuition scholarships are offered for the first two years of the program.

WGU's Master of Public Health program is designed to meet the needs of employers in the public health field and the communities they serve. The curriculum is developed by public health experts and focuses on the skills and knowledge most in demand. 

Students who earn this degree will support their community's health by monitoring the community's health status and needs, promoting disease prevention, strengthening access to healthcare and public health resources, and creating policies, plans, and laws that positively impact the public's health.

This program prepares students to develop, implement, and evaluate public health programs. You’ll demonstrate research methods needed to address public health illness and disease and assess the impact social determinants of health have on health outcomes.

Public Health Graduate Capstone enables students to investigate a public health issue in their local or home community and recommend new approaches to address that issue. Students practice the skills they have honed over the Master of Public Health program to design one that improves public health through education. Students control the process from research and discovery to program design, ultimately justifying their approach to potential stakeholders. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Public Health Core Functions and Essential Services builds foundational knowledge by exploring the ethical dimensions, intervention techniques, and educational strategies crucial for effective public health practice. Participants delve into the historical underpinnings, philosophy, and core values of public health, gaining insights into ethical principles guiding decision-making. The course equips students with the skills to design and implement impactful public health programs, emphasizing strategies tailored for health disparities and equity. The course navigates current issues and trends, providing a forward-looking perspective. Integrating discussions on core functions and the 10 Essential Services, the course fosters a holistic understanding of prevention science across primary, secondary, and tertiary levels in population health, including health promotion and screening. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Environmental Health provides learners with foundational knowledge, covering the relationship people have with their environment, the risk management choices that are made, and the resulting associations that affect the health and physical well-being of individuals, communities, and susceptible populations. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Global Health prepares students to identify and analyze global health as a field. Students in this course will consider how globalization has affected the health of various groups of people throughout the world. Likewise, students will also examine how economic and environmental factors have different effects on different groups globally. The course presents the student with knowledge of various global initiatives and international organizations that strive to promote health and well-being and reduce health disparities. Students will demonstrate their knowledge and skills by drafting an advocacy statement promoting the successful efforts of a global health organization. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Public Health Leadership and Administration enables students to apply leadership principles for public health leadership positions. This includes engaging, organizing, and leading diverse groups, as well as addressing ethical issues in the field of public health. Students also apply negotiation and mediation skills to address challenges they may face in the organization or community. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Social and Behavioral Determinants of Health provides an overview of social and behavioral determinants and their association with health behaviors, health outcomes, and health disparities. Learners examine the strategies to mitigate social determinant barriers and apply public health theories and models to elicit behavior change and to bridge the health disparity gap. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Public Health Assessment, Program Planning, Implementation and Evaluation explores the key components, concepts, and approaches for the public health assessment and planning process. In this course, students will apply evidence-based practices to conduct a community needs assessment, design a health promotion program, and develop implementation and evaluation plans. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Public Health Finance and Funding offers students a field-specific approach to acquiring the budgetary skills needed to secure funding for public health programs and manage it in prudent ways. Students learn to navigate various funding sources, such as government grants and cooperative agreements, and philanthropic organizations. Students learn to create budgets using government documentation both for managing funds and for persuading funding organizations of the value of projects. Finally, students conduct a variance analysis—the process by which budgets are evaluated for feasibility after programs have launched. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Biostatistics and Analysis introduces learners to the role that biostatistics has in public health, predicting public health outcomes and influencing decisions made with policies. Learners will examine the sources and methods of collecting public health information, analyze and interpret quantitative data in research studies, and make inferences on the effectiveness of health program interventions and policies. There are no prerequisites for this course.

Principles of Epidemiology offers an in-depth exploration of foundational principles and methodologies crucial for discerning and interpreting health and disease patterns in populations. Learners engage with core epidemiological concepts, encompassing measures of disease frequency, study designs, and principles of causation. Emphasizing practical applications, the course equips learners with analytical skills and theoretical foundations essential for conducting epidemiological research and contributing to evidence-based public health practices. Delving into a diverse range of topics, participants cultivate a robust understanding of epidemiological principles and their real-world applications, facilitating a seamless integration of knowledge into public health practices. There are no prerequisites for this course.

About the Doctor of Public Health Program

As the most advanced, professional qualification in public health, the DrPH prepares early- to mid-career domestic and international public health professionals to assume leadership roles in public health policy and practice positions as well as in health services delivery settings.

The Schoolwide DrPH program is a flexible, part-time program delivered online with the option of taking onsite courses.

• The Online Only option is for students who wish to take all of their courses online and not travel to Baltimore for onsite courses.
• The Online Plus option * (minimum onsite requirement of 4 credits) is for students who wish to take some face-to-face onsite courses.

Students are expected to remain in relevant public health employment throughout their studies.

The DrPH program is built around foundational competencies that focus on leadership, analytical skills, communication, policy, management, and program design and evaluation. Instruction is delivered through an integrated sequence of problem-based learning classes that address current public health challenges and provide students with opportunities to apply skills in a close to real-life setting.

*For international students (pending SEVP approval) :

• F-1 I-20 applications are possible for taking four or more credits of instruction during the summer or winter institute in Baltimore;
• F-1 I-20 applications require four or more credits of instruction in two consecutive weeks for each visit;
• F-1 I-20s cannot be issued for instruction during an 8-week term.

Curriculum for the Doctor of Public Health

Students in the DrPH Program complete a minimum of 30 credits of foundational course work taken by all DrPH students to meet the CEPH foundational DrPH competencies, which include a minimum of 6 credits of data analysis course work. Students also take an additional 27 credits of course work related to their concentration or track, and a minimum of 7 proposal and thesis credits. Overall, the DrPH requires a minimum total of 64 credits for graduation.

Admissions Requirements

Prior Graduate Degree

MPH or other health-related master's degree; students who have not completed an MPH may need to take additional core coursework concurrent with the 57 didactic credits required for the DrPH.

Prior Work Experience

Minimum 3 years of professional, full-time public health experience in the applicant's area of interest by the Dec. 1st application deadline.

Standardized Test Scores

Standardized test scores are  not required and not reviewed  for this program. If you have taken a standardized test such as the GRE, GMAT, or MCAT and want to submit your scores, please note that they will not be used as a metric during the application review.  Applications will be reviewed holistically based on all required application components.

Student Sponsorship

This program  does not  qualify for F-1 or J-1 student sponsorship. Legal Permanent Residents and non-immigrants who are otherwise physically present in the U.S.  and  in a status that allows for full or part-time study, may pursue this program.

Mark J. Bittle, DrPH, MBA

Mark Bittle is the Chair of the schoolwide Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program and a senior scientist in the Department of Health Policy and Management. He currently serves as director for the School's Master of Health Administration and the Master of Applied Science in Population Health Management. His work focuses on the organizational and management factors that influence physician alignment and managing change in complex organizations.

Renee M. Johnson, PhD, MPH

Renee M. Johnson is Deputy Chair of the schoolwide Doctor of Public Health (DrPH) program. She is also Associate Professor & Vice Chair for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) in Mental Health. She co-directs NIH-funded Drug Dependence Epidemiology Training Program and previously served on the MPH Executive Board. Her work addresses substance use, injury and violence, overdose prevention, and adolescent health.

Part-time DrPH students pay by the credit and finance their graduate studies through a variety of funding options ranging from paying out of pocket, to utilizing employer tuition remission benefits, financial aid , external scholarships, and military funding.

Bloomberg American Health Initiative DrPH Fellowships

The Bloomberg American Health Initiative offers 8-10 highly competitive fellowships for incoming DrPH students currently working with U.S. organizations on the front lines of one of the Bloomberg American Health Initiative’s five focus areas: addiction and overdose, environmental challenges, obesity and the food system, risks to adolescent health, and violence. A separate application process is required for consideration. Please note that only about 12% of fellowship applicants receive an award. It is important that applicants consider additional funding means prior to applying for the DrPH Program.
