Operational management is involved with many activities some of which are product and service management. The product and service management activities include creation of the product, development, production and product distribution. Other activities are purchase inventory control, quality control, storage, logistics and evaluation of processes.

The main purpose of operational management is to ensure that these business processes and activities are carried out efficiently and effectively. Operation management is therefore concerned with the internal processes of a business. However, the nature of how operational management works in an organization depends on the product and services that the organization deals with.

Operation management is the centre of all the changes that occur in the world of business. Some of the changes are changes in customer preference, changes in supply network caused by technologies and also changes in the quality of the product to suit the customer (Weiss & Gershon 21). Quality control is one of the very crucial activities of an operations management. It should be very effective so that a continuous improvement on the quality is observed.

This is an organization that aims in preventing accidental childhood injuries in the United Arab Emirates. The organization is one of the global networks of organizations called Safe kids worldwide. The organization has noted that accidental childhood injuries are the main causes of death in children. Accidental injuries take more children’s lives than diseases, violence or other causes. This mostly affects children of 14 years and below.

Most of these injuries are caused by motor vehicle crashes, falls, fire, bicycle accidents and other sporting related accidents. The organization believes that the injuries are preventable. This is possible if safety equipments are used and if the environment the children play is modified. Change of behavior can also help in preventing accidental injuries in children.

Safe kids have come up with significant progress in reducing the risk of accidental injury to children. Some of the progresses are provision of more advanced equipment in the hospital. It has also offered education to parents on how to prevent accidental injuries from occurring to the children. Safe kids also advocates for laws that protect children. They also provide safety device measures to families who need them.

The organization has brought together health and safety experts, educators, corporations, foundations, government and even volunteers. These people help the organization to effectively achieve its objectives.

Operations management has helped Safe kids in achieving its goals. Setting up hospitals which take good care of injured children is one of the goals. The organization is also providing advanced equipments to hospitals which are specialized for children cases.

The operations management wants Safe kids’ organization to effect its operation of ensuring that all the kids are safe. That is why, the operation managers are always passing and strengthening child safety laws and regulations. Such laws make the whole country to take the initiative of ensuring a child safe. It also leads to a responsible country as no one wants to be fined or taken to court for breaking the law.

Education to parents and children is also an idea from operations management. Parents are taught on how to prevent children from getting injured. Children are also taught on how they should take care of themselves. The teachings have proven to the parents that prevention is better than cure. Since the accidents are unintentional, they can therefore be prevented.

Operating managers of Safe kids have also started conducting research. The research involves visiting different hospitals and collecting data of how many children have visited the hospitals due to injuries. This research will help the managers to know which area needs to be taught about children safety. They are also able to know which hospital need the specialized equipments for children safety.

Safety devices are also provided to some families. Most of the families given the devices are those with many children. Also, families living in a risky environment are provided with these devices. This keeps the children safe, even in the unfriendly surrounding. Some of the lifesaving devices provided are smoke alarms, helmets and safety seats.

Safe Kids operates by teaching parents on how to prevent injuries to their children. This is done in hospitals, church and even in schools, where most parents are gathered. The organization also has experts who move from home to home talking to parents. Parents are taught on how to transport children safely in cars. They should check car seats and booster seats for proper installation. They are asked to first teach them how to ride motor bikes before buying them the bikes.

Children are also taught about their safety by the organization. They are taught what they should and should not do when around or in the vehicle. They are also taught on how to walk on the streets, especially when going or leaving the schools.

Safe kids programs are ongoing activities which get the members of community involved in child safety initiatives. One of the programs is creating safe environment. It is the work of every member of a community to keep the environment safe. A safe environment must also be clean. Community members can ensure a safe environment by not littering dirt around. This dirt is dangerous to the children as it can make them fall or hurt them. They can also get poisoned, especially young children who go eating anything they come across.

Operations management has always been very effective in every business. Its results are always positive in every business enterprise where products are produced or services are provided. In our case Safe Kids organization offers services to the children. Operations management has helped the organization provide the service effectively. The rate of children injury has reduced especially in the United States, where it has reduced from 78% to 30%. There are also very rare cases of children injuries in different hospitals all over the world.

Introduction of complex and complicated equipments need qualified personnel. The organization should first train some of its employees on how the equipments are operated. This will ensure that the equipment performs its function effectively.

The safety devices provided to families should be more advanced such that they can protect a child from getting poisoned. This is because; most of these devices are about physical injury. This will help reduce the poisoning cases. Poisoning is even the most dangerous of all the injuries because it can even kill a child.

The number one cause of deaths of children in industrialized countries is the unintentional injuries. Therefore, Safe Kids Worldwide should ensure that the more advanced equipments are readily found in those countries. Operational managers of safe kids should send qualified and health experts in the area.

Educators are also needed to educate parents and children in industrialized area. Children need to know how they should carry themselves around and while in the industries. Many well equipped health centers need to be established near the industries for emergency cases.

Organizations should also promote corporate leadership. This can be achieved through effective and sustainable partnership. Corporate leadership will help in ensuring that the organization’s employees are carrying out their duties effectively. This will lead to a good relationship between the customer and organization.

There are two main functions of an organization. One is to provide a product or a service and the other function is to sell the product or service. However, Operations management mostly focuses on the first function of providing product or service. Operations management plans and controls all activities necessary for the provision of the firm’s product or service. Since the aspect of Operation management emphasizes on the product or service provision, it has some ways to make this possible.

It gives advice on the best techniques and equipment to use to make the goods or provide a service. It emphasizes on work force management, training of employees and measurement of quality assurance. Operational managers who adhere to the above ideas and technologies are able to improve productivity and reduce cost. They are also able to enhance the quality of a good and customer service. Operations management is the process of managing the production of goods and services. Thus operations is a broad term that encompasses both hard-goods manufacturing management and service management.

Traditionally, the term ‘production’ brings to mind smokestacks, assembly lines and machine shops. However, the functional field of production and operations management (P/OM) refers to the broader idea of the producing activities of all kinds of organisations — manufacturing or service, public or private, large or small, profit or non-profit.

Operations management refers to the set of managerial activities that organisations engage in to create their products and services.

These activities were earlier called “production management”. In those days, “production” seemed to focus too narrowly on manufacturing. When managers began to expand their view of production to include services and other intangible products, the term “production and operations manage­ment” evolved. So “operations management” is rapidly becoming the generally accepted phrase.

Operations and Conversion Processes:

Operations, as a conversion process, can be visualised as consisting of the elements shown as solid lines in Fig. 22.1. Let us examine the inputs, conversion processes, outputs and feedback and control cycle depicted in the figure from an operations perspective.

Product Outputs:

The primary driving force of operations management is the desired end- product(s). Operations managers and operative employees must have a clear and precise definition of the product(s), including the key product attributes, the important quality characteristics, and quality standards for each attribute.

They also need to know how many of each product are needed and at what times to meet customer demand. In other words, operations employees need a clear picture of what they are trying to accomplish in their day-to-day activities.

Conversion Process:

Conversion processes may involve any of several different types of tech­nologies, and technologies vary widely. Petroleum processing in a refinery operation utilises a continuous-process technology; automobile manufacturers employ primarily a mass-production technology; an aircraft manufacturer uses unit or small-batch technology.

Operations relies on receiving resources from other parts of the organisation and from the external environment of business. Operations cannot occur for very long without continuous supply of inputs. Some of these resources are more or less permanent, such as buildings and land devoted to production, whereas others are transient resources that are consumed fully on a day-to-day basis, such as raw materials and office supplies.

Feedback and Control:

Operations management systems are directed toward achieving goals. Once operations goals are established, controls help the system conform to standards of efficiency and effectiveness. Managers obtain information for evaluating system performance by monitoring various stages of the conversion process, the inputs and the product outputs.

The control system must provide timely information so that appropriate actions can be taken. Deviations from control standards are a prime basis for changing the inputs, the conversion process, or even the product or service design.

Operations as a Management Challenge:

The problems they face revolve around the acquisition and utilisation of resources for conversion. Some familiar operations activities and roles include purchasing, production forecasting, work flow and process analysis, job design, inventory control, production scheduling, quality control supervi­sion, and manufacturing management.

These activities and roles seek to achieve balance and consistency among the three elements: inputs, the conversion process and outputs. These elements, in turn, must be in balance with and consistent with the other functions of the overall organisation. Therefore, each organisation has different expectations of its operations function, and the operations function in one organisation has different capabilities from that in another.

A set of product output specification that cannot be achieved in one conversion process may perhaps be easily met in another. The capability of the process, then, must match the output goals. A mismatch requires managers to decide whether to change the goals, product or conversion process. Similarly, input resources must be consistent with and supportive of the conversion process and its product output goals.

The proper outputs flowing from the conversion process indicate that the operations function is effective. Such success is usually not an accident, or at least sustained success is not. To maintain successful operations the production system must extend well beyond the operations activities.

In Fig. 22.1, for example, the dashed lines show the completion of the monetary resource cycle, emphasising that consumed outputs create the monetary resources that sustain operations and all other activities of the organisation.

In other words, products must be sold. Because the available monetary resources are limited, managers try to allocate them in a rational manner among all the organisation’s activities, including the operations function, by developing plans.

The term operations management is argued to be a management area that concerns itself with processes that involves the overseeing, the designing and eventually controlling production processes through the redesigning of operations of businesses in the production of goods and services (Boyer & Verma, 2010). Operations management ensures that business activities become more efficient by using fewer resources and meeting the requirements of customers in the most effective manner. The operations management activities involves the management of the processes that converts raw materials that are considered to be inputs into outputs that includes goods and services. Operations management usually goes hand in hand with quality management. The process of quality management involves activities such as quality control, quality assurance, quality improvement and quality assurance. This paper discusses the importance of operations management within the furniture industry. The furniture industry is an established industry that primarily engages in the manufacture of furniture products (Banes, 2008). The industry engages in the production of chairs, kitchen furniture, seats and office related furniture that are either consumed domestically or exported to other regions. The industry contributes a substantial amount of revenue\e to the national government thus plays a significant role within the industry. The furniture industry is associated with higher proportions of small and medium sized business that are actively engaged in the manufacture of both office and household furniture of various types. Within our country’s economy, the furniture industry is actively involved in the process of supplying furniture services to both the domestic end users and the contractual end users. With the high growth within this industry, there arises a need to have a proper system of management. This, therefore, calls for the need to have a proper operations management system that is very important as discussed here in. The main importance of having proper operations management within the furniture industry is because it improves the industry’s productivity and also improves the financial position within the industry (Chary, 2009). In terms of improving productivity, operations management leads to the measurement of efficiency levels within the industry. Productivity is measured in term of the ratio between the outputs and the inputs. This also measures the level of efficiency within the industry. The scarce resources within the furniture industry have to be used properly to avoid wastages and if the ratio between the input and outputs is higher then the level of efficiency is considered to be higher. This criterion has also been used in other industries with the Ernst and Young using the ‘hoteling’ to affect both parts of the efficiency ratio thus helping them cut on inputs in term of cost of office space and boost the out put of its travelling accountants. Operations management also improves quality of operations. To ensure the total quality improvement within the furniture industry, operations management will ensure that approaches such as the small scale but continuous improvements within its processes are combined with the large scale redesigning of the very same processes that will directly affect the levels of productivity and efficiency (Mahaderan, 2009). Either, operations management helps the furniture industry undertake the process of capacity planning that helps it in maintaining cash flows within the industry and thus make substantial profits. Either, operations management enables industry players to management the different types and level of inventories within the furniture industry thus ensuring that production breakages do not occur. In conclusion, proper operations management process is very vital for the smooth operation within the furniture industry (Langabeer, 2007). The operations management process ensures that there is a proper system of locating the facilities that are necessary within this industry. This will ensures that quality operations are adhered to thus enabling the industry players to effectively and efficiently meet the customer requirements with maximum usage of the minimal resources that exist within this industry.

Operations management is an essential process that uses raw materials to turn them into goods and services. Cachon, Girotra, & Netessine (2020) mention that this phenomenon is connected with the supply chain because the two reflect the internal and external operational systems, respectively. That is why it is not a surprise that operations management is relevant to both whole companies and managers in other organization functions.

Firstly, one should understand that operations management offers an essential impact on the financial and purchasing performance of every company, including, for example, Gucci. It is so because an operations manager determines what raw materials and methods to use to produce goods. Secondly, another significant function of an operations manager is to interview candidates and supervise employees (Wolniak, 2019).

Operational managers are tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that the operations in their firms flow smoothly and without any major glitches. Every firm involved in the production of goods and services has the office of the operation’s manager. The occupant of such an office is in charge of the day to day management of the firm’s operations. It is his or her responsibility to ensure that all arms or branches of the firm function in sync with an aim of producing quality products that will add value to the final recipients who are mainly the customers. The essay that follows will present a directive letter drafted by Wendy Kouba (Wyeth Pharmaceuticals’ new VP operations manager) and sent to the firm’s QHs and MDs in different sites within Wyeth’s global network.

Operational Transformation Directive for All Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Branches

It has come to our attention at the head office that our company is trailing behind in sales and that the operations costs are still higher than desired. My predecessor Mr. Kamarck did a good job in spearheading the cost-reduction program that saw the firm cut down its operational costs by a whopping $40 million. This was a good achievement but still needs more to be done. The management of the firm has raised the bar and now we are expected to reduce the operations cost by another $200 million.

This is no simple task, but I believe that we are equal to the task at hand. In order for us to achieve the task set before us, we must join forces and work on the areas that will be highlighted and discussed in this directive letter. But first, there are certain operational inefficiencies that need to be addressed. I believe that after we have addressed these inefficiencies, then we will be ready to reclaim our position among the global leaders in the drug manufacturing industry.

The pharmaceutical industry in which we operate is very dynamic and it has experienced rapid changes in the recent past. There is no indication that this changes have come to a close. Matter of fact, all indications show that more changes will continue to hit the industry. Since we cannot control the direction of the wind, it is therefore prudent that we concentrate our efforts on adjusting the sails. Perhaps once we have done this we will then be able to “sail our ship” to a desired destination.

In other words, the changes hitting the pharmaceutical industry might be a little over our heads and out of our control, but we can adopt measures that will see us mitigate the effects of these changes while, at the same time, taking advantage of favorable changes. In this regard, the firm has seen it fit that we institute a raft of measures that will not only help us survive the changes but also thrive in the rapidly changing environment.

The primary challenge facing us as a firm relates to the high cost of operations incurred both at the HQ and at our network of sites. Moving forward, our primary undertaking will be to apply the measures enshrined in this directive letter with a sole purpose of achieving a cut in operational cost by over $200 million. Meeting this target is no small task; however, it is very possible. Many of you might be asking how exactly we hope to achieve that. Well, the first step is to believe, yes to believe that we have all it takes to deliver on the target. After believing, the next step entails coming up with strategic programs that will help steer the firm towards cutting the cost of operations

Traditionally, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals’ global branches have been operating independent of each other and most times, the various branches have been competing against each other to achieve high sales targets. Thus far, this system has worked perfectly and I take this opportunity to commend all the MDs and QHs in our global branches. The success achieved by the individual branches got us into thinking just how much success we would achieve when we start working together in collaboration rather than working independently in a competition.

It has come to our attention that the firm stands stronger united in its operations than operating independent of each other. In line with this assessment, I move to direct that the various QHs from our branches need to ready their branches for the various changes that must be instituted in order to achieve the set goals and targets on cost cutting.

There are many benefits that will accrue to the firm and its branches when the collaborative approach is fully embraced and implemented. Chief among these benefits is the fact that the approach will cause the branches to work in unison and they will be united in purpose. There will be no branches that will be working at cross purposes (“ Wyeth.” Pharmaceuticals N.p). The network of sites will be connected from the head quarters to the various branches. This will allow for the sharing of certain resource and functions. This will in effect eliminate all costs that are associated with delays in dissemination of information, duplicity of functions and process, and delays in production.

Additionally, the collaborative approach will allow the firm to achieve quantum leap successes because of the unity of purpose that will arise from the firms working together. Moving forward, I direct all the MDs to embark on inter and intra branch discussions and seek areas of collaboration. This will be akin to the leadership coalition that was once instituted by Merrick McCracken. Kindly note, the job descriptions for all the workers will remain as they are. It is important that you get to understand that this transformation touches on operations and it is not meant to alter job descriptions in a major way with minor exceptions in areas where the job descriptions might have to be redefined to fir within the transformation agenda.

There are many improvement opportunities that can be implemented at the different sites. We have realized at the head quarters that some of our branches are operating at suboptimal levels while others are overstretched with orders and work. We therefore saw it fit to embrace and inculcate the tenets of supply chain management and process management, which we hope that it will help us deliver quality and value to our customers at a lower cost.

A well implemented supply chain management function will ensure that all our branches produce the medicine when needed and in the right quantity. This will in effect eliminate the costs associated with stock out and delays. I further direct that the QHs rethink and adjust their branches EOQ so as to include the summation of make-to-order and make-to-stock values. This will, in effect, ensure that the stock available matches with the demands of the market. Additionally, such a move will also help in reducing logistic costs because medicine will be produced as and when required.

The corporate management at the HQ is seeking ways by which we can have all our branches working corporately in fulfilling the vision of the company. Cooperation between the different branches will help in benchmarking and attaining of global optimization goals (Boyer, and Rohit 23). When all branches are optimized, this will allow the various branches to specialize in their functions and concentrate on producing the component that will cost them lower, in terms of investments, to produce. Further, global optimization will negate the effects of conflicting objectives at the different branches.

Global optimization will mean that all the branches meet the requirements leveled on them. Throughput time and cycle time must be reduced substantially to ensure that this vision is met if not surpassed. Furthermore, I direct that the MDs and QHs find ways of solving the process management problems that manifest in form of blocking, starving, and bottlenecks. This will in effect ensure that the production process proceeds without any hindrances.

Quality management is another gray area that has remained unattended to for the longest time. I direct that the QHs redirect focus to this component and ensure that the quality of the final product is top notch and standardized. I further direct the QHs to identify the bottlenecks in production and quality management and find innovative ways of overcoming the bottlenecks. The MDs must ensure that their branches attain the expectations placed on them by the HQ. This is only possible when the branches will be clear on the implementation of total quality management (TQM). This will ensure that the firm excels in all aspects of product and service delivery that are important to the firm’s customers.

Please note that these operational transformations will not be possible without your involvement as change leaders. I have faith in your roles as transformational leaders and I know that you are the best people to lead these transformations. Perhaps you should consider Deming’s 14 points on organization transformation. Pay keen and particular attention to leading and promoting change. Show the people under your command that there is no need to fear.

Support, help and improve the employees in your branches. Show them the importance of continual education. Remind the employees that they are all leaders in their own stations. Allow them opportunities to train and become current with the advancements in the field. Forward the names of employees that have shown exemplary and exceptional work so that they can be considered for promotion and reward. Above all else ensure that waste is eliminated as much as it possible and apply the six sigma quality measures.

In conclusion, I believe that once all these directives have been applied to the branches, then we will be able to achieve the goals set for the firm by the top management. Moving forward we are all working together to achieve the goal of reducing operational costs. Six Sigma and its Applicability and Value

Effective operations management encapsulates various aspects and Six Sigma is one of the most important. Six Sigma, in this case, is defined as an approach employed by an organization to improve operations management quality by eradicating errors, lessening costs of production, and saving time, which are crucial determiners of operational efficiency. The main objective of Six Sigma is to streamline quality control in business operations ensuring that there is no variance. Six Sigma does this by eliminating the defects by defining a sequence around a target set that aligns with the objective of an organization. The Six Sigma operates using DMAIC as its most important tool, which stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, as well as control. As a tool, DMAIC is the methodology governing the management of Six Sigma and also acts as a method creating steps for every project undertaken in organization’s operation (Assarlind, Gremyr, & Bäckman, 2013). Define enables operation managers to delineate the requirements of customers that are to be met at the end of the production process. Measure indicates what is happening and it gives a clear indicator of what needs to change in order to meet goals and objectives. Analyze enables operation manager to identify roots cause of a problem when it arises. This creates an opportunity of amending to problem preventing it from re-occurring. Improve ensures that processes are capable of achieving the goals. Finally, control ensures that the operations are monitored ascertaining the goal is always achieved.

From the definition and description, it is worth noting that the applicability of Six Sigma in operation management cannot be underestimated. One of the practical applicability of Six Sigma is in port operations. As a competitive business, the port industry necessitates the provision of quality services. Irrefutably, Six Sigma can help ports to manage their operations better. By employing the use of DMAIC, a vital Six Sigma tool, ports ameliorates performance and quality level of container cargo handling process. It is imperative to indicate that Six Sigma is applicable to other organizations as well, which seeks to better their operations. For instance, the Motorola acts as an important case study that illustrates the applicability and value of utilizing Six Sigma in operations management (D’Mello, 2015). The case study illustrates how Motorola used the tool to develop and promote quality throughout its operations, thus eradicating defects. As a path-breaking methodology for business operations improvement, it has advantages and disadvantages. One of the merits of Six Sigma is that it is driven by customers and thus helps in achieving maximum customer gratification. It also leads to a rise in profitability and cost reduction, which promotes operational efficiency. In regard to demerits, Six Sigma requires a skilled man force and thus it requires a lot of concentration for its accomplishment. Moreover, theoretical concepts articulated by Six Sigma are hard to implement to the practical application since there is a real barrier that needs to be determined.

As a management function of an organization, it is clear that operations management acts as a business function responsible for crucial process accomplishment within an organization. In particular, an effective operations management must take into consideration key aspects, which include operational efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability as well as operation strategy. What is climate change mitigation?

Climate change mitigation refers to any action taken by governments, businesses or people to reduce or prevent greenhouse gases, or to enhance carbon sinks that remove them from the atmosphere. These gases trap heat from the sun in our planet’s atmosphere, keeping it warm. 

Since the industrial era began, human activities have led to the release of dangerous levels of greenhouse gases, causing global warming and climate change. However, despite unequivocal research about the impact of our activities on the planet’s climate and growing awareness of the severe danger climate change poses to our societies, greenhouse gas emissions keep rising. If we can slow down the rise in greenhouse gases, we can slow down the pace of climate change and avoid its worst consequences.

Reducing greenhouse gases can be achieved by:

  • Shifting away from fossil fuels : Fossil fuels are the biggest source of greenhouse gases, so transitioning to modern renewable energy sources like solar, wind and geothermal power, and advancing sustainable modes of transportation, is crucial.
  • Improving energy efficiency : Using less energy overall – in buildings, industries, public and private spaces, energy generation and transmission, and transportation – helps reduce emissions. This can be achieved by using thermal comfort standards, better insulation and energy efficient appliances, and by improving building design, energy transmission systems and vehicles.
  • Changing agricultural practices : Certain farming methods release high amounts of methane and nitrous oxide, which are potent greenhouse gases. Regenerative agricultural practices – including enhancing soil health, reducing livestock-related emissions, direct seeding techniques and using cover crops – support mitigation, improve resilience and decrease the cost burden on farmers.
  • The sustainable management and conservation of forests : Forests act as carbon sinks , absorbing carbon dioxide and reducing the overall concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Measures to reduce deforestation and forest degradation are key for climate mitigation and generate multiple additional benefits such as biodiversity conservation and improved water cycles.
  • Restoring and conserving critical ecosystems : In addition to forests, ecosystems such as wetlands, peatlands, and grasslands, as well as coastal biomes such as mangrove forests, also contribute significantly to carbon sequestration, while supporting biodiversity and enhancing climate resilience.
  • Creating a supportive environment : Investments, policies and regulations that encourage emission reductions, such as incentives, carbon pricing and limits on emissions from key sectors are crucial to driving climate change mitigation.

What is the 1.5°C goal and why do we need to stick to it?

In 2015, 196 Parties to the UN Climate Convention in Paris adopted the Paris Agreement , a landmark international treaty, aimed at curbing global warming and addressing the effects of climate change. Its core ambition is to cap the rise in global average temperatures to well below 2°C above levels observed prior to the industrial era, while pursuing efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C.

The 1.5°C goal is extremely important, especially for vulnerable communities already experiencing severe climate change impacts. Limiting warming below 1.5°C will translate into less extreme weather events and sea level rise, less stress on food production and water access, less biodiversity and ecosystem loss, and a lower chance of irreversible climate consequences.

To limit global warming to the critical threshold of 1.5°C, it is imperative for the world to undertake significant mitigation action. This requires a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 45 percent before 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by mid-century.

What are the policy instruments that countries can use to drive mitigation?

Everyone has a role to play in climate change mitigation, from individuals adopting sustainable habits and advocating for change to governments implementing regulations, providing incentives and facilitating investments. The private sector, particularly those businesses and companies responsible for causing high emissions, should take a leading role in innovating, funding and driving climate change mitigation solutions. 

International collaboration and technology transfer is also crucial given the global nature and size of the challenge. As the main platform for international cooperation on climate action, the Paris Agreement has set forth a series of responsibilities and policy tools for its signatories. One of the primary instruments for achieving the goals of the treaty is Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) . These are the national climate pledges that each Party is required to develop and update every five years. NDCs articulate how each country will contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhance climate resilience.   While NDCs include short- to medium-term targets, long-term low emission development strategies (LT-LEDS) are policy tools under the Paris Agreement through which countries must show how they plan to achieve carbon neutrality by mid-century. These strategies define a long-term vision that gives coherence and direction to shorter-term national climate targets.

At the same time, the call for climate change mitigation has evolved into a call for reparative action, where high-income countries are urged to rectify past and ongoing contributions to the climate crisis. This approach reflects the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) which advocates for climate justice, recognizing the unequal historical responsibility for the climate crisis, emphasizing that wealthier countries, having profited from high-emission activities, bear a greater obligation to lead in mitigating these impacts. This includes not only reducing their own emissions, but also supporting vulnerable countries in their transition to low-emission development pathways.

Another critical aspect is ensuring a just transition for workers and communities that depend on the fossil fuel industry and its many connected industries. This process must prioritize social equity and create alternative employment opportunities as part of the shift towards renewable energy and more sustainable practices.

For emerging economies, innovation and advancements in technology have now demonstrated that robust economic growth can be achieved with clean, sustainable energy sources. By integrating renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind and geothermal power into their growth strategies, these economies can reduce their emissions, enhance energy security and create new economic opportunities and jobs. This shift not only contributes to global mitigation efforts but also sets a precedent for sustainable development.

What are some of the challenges slowing down climate change mitigation efforts?

Mitigating climate change is fraught with complexities, including the global economy's deep-rooted dependency on fossil fuels and the accompanying challenge of eliminating fossil fuel subsidies. This reliance – and the vested interests that have a stake in maintaining it – presents a significant barrier to transitioning to sustainable energy sources.

The shift towards decarbonization and renewable energy is driving increased demand for critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt, and rare earth metals. Since new mining projects can take up to 15 years to yield output, mineral supply chains could become a bottleneck for decarbonization efforts. In addition, these minerals are predominantly found in a few, mostly low-income countries, which could heighten supply chain vulnerabilities and geopolitical tensions.

Furthermore, due to the significant demand for these minerals and the urgency of the energy transition, the scaled-up investment in the sector has the potential to exacerbate environmental degradation, economic and governance risks, and social inequalities, affecting the rights of Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and workers. Addressing these concerns necessitates implementing social and environmental safeguards, embracing circular economy principles, and establishing and enforcing responsible policies and regulations .

Agriculture is currently the largest driver of deforestation worldwide. A transformation in our food systems to reverse the impact that agriculture has on forests and biodiversity is undoubtedly a complex challenge. But it is also an important opportunity. The latest IPCC report highlights that adaptation and mitigation options related to land, water and food offer the greatest potential in responding to the climate crisis. Shifting to regenerative agricultural practices will not only ensure a healthy, fair and stable food supply for the world’s population, but also help to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

What are some examples of climate change mitigation?

In Mauritius , UNDP, with funding from the Green Climate Fund, has supported the government to install battery energy storage capacity that has enabled 50 MW of intermittent renewable energy to be connected to the grid, helping to avoid 81,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. 

In Indonesia , UNDP has been working with the government for over a decade to support sustainable palm oil production. In 2019, the country adopted a National Action Plan on Sustainable Palm Oil, which was collaboratively developed by government, industry and civil society representatives. The plan increased the adoption of practices to minimize the adverse social and environmental effects of palm oil production and to protect forests. Since 2015, 37 million tonnes of direct greenhouse gas emissions have been avoided and 824,000 hectares of land with high conservation value have been protected.

In Moldova and Paraguay , UNDP has helped set up Green City Labs that are helping build more sustainable cities. This is achieved by implementing urban land use and mobility planning, prioritizing energy efficiency in residential buildings, introducing low-carbon public transport, implementing resource-efficient waste management, and switching to renewable energy sources. 

UNDP has supported the governments of Brazil, Costa Rica, Ecuador and Indonesia to implement results-based payments through the REDD+ (Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries) framework. These include payments for environmental services and community forest management programmes that channel international climate finance resources to local actors on the ground, specifically forest communities and Indigenous Peoples. 

UNDP is also supporting small island developing states like the Comoros to invest in renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure. Through the Africa Minigrids Program , solar minigrids will be installed in two priority communities, Grand Comore and Moheli, providing energy access through distributed renewable energy solutions to those hardest to reach.

And in South Africa , a UNDP initative to boost energy efficiency awareness among the general population and improve labelling standards has taken over commercial shopping malls.

What is UNDP’s role in supporting climate change mitigation?

UNDP aims to assist countries with their climate change mitigation efforts, guiding them towards sustainable, low-carbon and climate-resilient development. This support is in line with achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to affordable and clean energy (SDG7), sustainable cities and communities (SDG11), and climate action (SDG13). Specifically, UNDP’s offer of support includes developing and improving legislation and policy, standards and regulations, capacity building, knowledge dissemination, and financial mobilization for countries to pilot and scale-up mitigation solutions such as renewable energy projects, energy efficiency initiatives and sustainable land-use practices. 

With financial support from the Global Environment Facility and the Green Climate Fund, UNDP has an active portfolio of 94 climate change mitigation projects in 69 countries. These initiatives are not only aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also at contributing to sustainable and resilient development pathways.
