ആധുനികയുഗത്തെ തുറിച്ചുനോക്കുന്ന ഒരു സാമൂഹ്യപ്രശ്നമാണ് വാർദ്ധക്യവും ജീവിതവും. ഒരു മനുഷ്യായുസ്സു മുഴുവൻ അധ്വാനിച്ച് തന്റെ കുടുംബത്തിനും മക്കൾക്കുമായി ജീവിതം ഹോമിച്ച് ഒടുവിൽ ആരോഗ്യവും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് പരാശ്രയത്വത്തിന്റെ പടുകുഴിയിലേക്കു വീണുപോകുന്നവർ. ചെറുപ്പക്കാർക്കും കുട്ടികൾക്കും വൃദ്ധജനങ്ങളോട് ഒരുതരം അവജ്ഞയാണ്. അവർ പ്രായമായവരെ ഒരു വികൃതജീവി യായോ നേരമ്പോക്കായോ ബാധ്യതയായോ കാണുന്നു. വാർദ്ധക്യം ഒരു ശാപമാണോ എന്നു ചിന്തിച്ചുപോകുന്നതപ്പോഴാണ്. അണുകു ടുംബങ്ങളുടെ ഇത്തിരിപ്പോന്ന വിസ്തൃതിയിൽ വൃദ്ധർക്ക് ഇടമില്ല. മക്കളും മരുമക്കളും ഉദ്യോഗത്തിരക്കിൽപ്പെട്ട് ദൂരദേശത്തും കൊച്ചു മക്കൾ ഹോസ്റ്റലുകളിലും ജീവിക്കുമ്പോൾ അനാഥരാകുന്ന വൃദ്ധർക്ക് ആശ്രയമാകുന്ന ഒരിടമാണ് വൃദ്ധസദനങ്ങൾ.

സാമൂഹ്യപ്രസക്തിയുള്ള ഒരു വിഷയമാണിത്. അതീവ ശ്രദ്ധയും കരുണയും വേണ്ടുന്ന ഒരു ജീവൽപ്രശ്നം. കേരളത്തിലെ ഉൾനാടൻ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിൽപ്പോലും അതിവേഗം ഇടംനേടിക്കൊണ്ടിരിക്കുന്ന ഒരു കച്ചവടസ്ഥാപനമായി വളർന്നുവരുകയാണ് വൃദ്ധസദനങ്ങൾ. പേരു തന്നെയാണ് അവയുടെ മുദ്രാവാക്യം. എല്ലാം കാശുകൊടുത്തു വാങ്ങി ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന കേരളത്തിൽ സ്നേഹവും സേവനവും കടപ്പാടും എന്തിന് ആത്മബന്ധങ്ങൾപോലും പണമൊടുക്കുന്ന രസീതുകളുടെ എണ്ണവും കനവും നോക്കിയാണ് നിർണ്ണയിക്കുന്നത്. കേരളത്തിൽ വൃദ്ധരായി ജീവിക്കുവാനും ഇന്നാരും ആഗ്രഹിക്കുമെന്നു തോന്നു ന്നില്ല. കാരണം അവർ ഇന്ന് അനാഥരും തിരസ്കരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നവരും ഒരു ബാധ്യതയും ആവുകയാണ്. ലോകാപവാദം ഭയക്കുന്ന മക്കൾ പ്രായമായ മാതാപിതാക്കൾക്ക് പണം കൊടുത്ത് വാങ്ങിക്കൊടുക്കുന്ന പരിചരണമാണ് വൃദ്ധസദനങ്ങൾ.

ആത്മബന്ധങ്ങൾക്ക് പവിത്രതയും മൂല്യവും ഏറെ കല്പ്പിച്ചിരുന്നൊരു സംസ്കാരമാണ് ഭാരതത്തിനുള്ളത്. ഭാരതപുരാണേതിഹാസങ്ങളിൽ കാണുന്നത് ഈ ആത്മബന്ധത്തിന്റെ ചിത്രങ്ങളാണ്. ശ്രീരാമന്റെയും അനുജന്മാരുടെയും സ്നേഹാദരങ്ങളും പിതൃഭക്തിയും മാതൃഭക്തി യും ഭാര്യാഭർത്തബന്ധവുമൊക്കെ ഇതിനുദാഹരണമാണ്. വേദങ്ങ ളിലും ഈ ആത്മബന്ധത്തിന്റെ സുമുഹൂർത്തങ്ങൾ കാണാനുണ്ട്. ഈ ജീവിതചിത്രങ്ങളുടെ പശ്ചാത്തലത്തിലായിരുന്നു നമ്മുടെ കുടുംബ ബന്ധങ്ങളും ജീവിതവും വിടർന്നു വിലസിച്ചിരുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ ആധു നികതയും അന്യസംസ്കാരങ്ങളുടെ തള്ളിക്കയറ്റവും അണുകുടും ബങ്ങളുടെ ആവിർഭാവവും താനും തന്റെ കുടുംബവും എന്നുമാത്രമായി ഓരോ മനസ്സും ഗൃഹവും ഒതുങ്ങിയപ്പോൾ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ പുറമ്പോ ക്കുകളിലേക്ക് വൃദ്ധരും മറ്റും അടിച്ചിറക്കപ്പെട്ടു. നമ്മുടെ കൂട്ടുകുടുംബ സമ്പ്രദായത്തിന്റെ ശക്തി ഈ ആത്മബന്ധവും ആദരവും ആയിരുന്നു. കുടുംബബന്ധങ്ങളെ പരസ്പരം ബന്ധിപ്പിക്കുന്ന കണ്ണികളായിരുന്നു വൃദ്ധജനങ്ങൾ. മുത്തശ്ശനും മുത്തശ്ശിയും കഥകൾ പറഞ്ഞുകൊടുത്തും നമ്മുടെ പൈതൃകം പകർന്നുകൊടുത്തും ഈ വാസന തലമുറകളിൽ ഊട്ടിവളർത്തി. സ്നേഹവും പരസ്പരമുള്ള ആദരവും കടപ്പാടും പങ്കി ടീലും പരസ്പരാശ്രയത്വവുമായിരുന്നു കുടുംബബന്ധങ്ങളുടെ അടി സ്ഥാനശില. ഇവയെല്ലാം നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട് ഒറ്റപ്പെടുന്ന വാർദ്ധക്യത്തിന്റെ അസ്വസ്ഥപൂർണ്ണമായ ജീവിതങ്ങൾക്ക് ഒതുങ്ങിക്കൂടാനുള്ളതാണ് വൃദ്ധ സദനങ്ങൾ.

വാർദ്ധക്യം ഒരു ശാപമാണോ? അല്ലെന്നും ആണെന്നും വാദിക്കാം. പക്ഷേ, അതൊഴിച്ചുകൂടാനാവാത്തതാണ്. ഇന്നത്തെ കളിക്കുഞ്ഞ് നാളത്തെ വൃദ്ധനാണ്. ഈ അവസ്ഥകളെല്ലാം പിന്നിട്ട് എല്ലാം നഷ്ട പ്പെട്ട് പരാശ്രയത്തിൽ ജീവിക്കുന്നവരാണ് അവർ. രോഗങ്ങളും ശാരീരി കമായ അസ്വസ്ഥതകളും പെരുകുന്ന കാലം. ആശുപത്രിയിൽ കൊണ്ടു പോകാനോ പരിചരിക്കാനോ നേരമില്ലാത്ത മക്കൾ, ആ ചുമതലക ളെല്ലാം വൃദ്ധസദനങ്ങളെ ഏല്പിക്കുന്നു. അൻപതുവർഷം മുമ്പുവരെ കേരളത്തിലെ വീടുകളിലെ കാരണവസ്ഥാനമായിരുന്നു വൃദ്ധന്മാർക്കു ണ്ടായിരുന്നത്. പേരക്കിടാങ്ങൾക്ക് കഥയും കവിതയും പറഞ്ഞും പാടിയും കൊടുത്ത് കഴിഞ്ഞ മുത്തശ്ശിമാർ അന്ന് വീടിന്റെ വിളക്കാ യിരുന്നു.

നഗരവത്കരണത്തിന്റെയും കമ്പോളവത്കരണത്തിന്റെയും വ്യാവ സായികവത്കരണത്തിന്റെയുമൊക്കെ ദുരന്തഫലമാണ് അനാഥരായ വൃദ്ധജനങ്ങൾ. ഉദ്യോഗത്തിരക്കുമൂലം മക്കളും മരുമക്കളും പേരക്കി ടാങ്ങളും അരികിലില്ലാതെ ഒറ്റപ്പെടുന്ന ഇവർക്ക് ഇന്ന് ശരണാലയങ്ങ ളാണ് ഇവ. മറ്റൊരാളുടെ സഹായം വൃദ്ധജനങ്ങൾക്ക് എപ്പോഴുമുണ്ടാ വണം. ഈ സഹായത്തിന്റെ അഭാവമാണ് വൃദ്ധാലയങ്ങളിലൂടെ പരിഹരിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഉപയോഗശൂന്യമായതിനെ തള്ളിക്കളയുന്നതാണ് പുതിയ സംസ്കാരം. വരുമാനമില്ലാത്തവയ്ക്ക് പണവും നേരവും മുട ക്കാൻ താത്പര്യമില്ല. പണാധിപത്യത്തിന്റെ പുതിയ സിദ്ധാന്തമാണത്. ആരോടും ആത്മാർത്ഥതയില്ലാത്ത ഒരു സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ നേർപടമാണ് പെരുകുന്ന വൃദ്ധാലയങ്ങൾ. മറ്റൊരു വാദമുണ്ട്. ജീവിതമാർഗ്ഗം തേടി പ്പോകുന്ന പുതിയ തലമുറയുടെ തിരക്കുമൂലം അനാഥരായിപ്പോകാതെ പ്രായമായവരെ സംരക്ഷിക്കുന്നതിന് മികച്ച മാർഗ്ഗമാണ് വ്യദ്ധാലയ ങ്ങൾ എന്ന്. അവരുടെ പരിചരണ താത്പര്യവും പരിഗണനയുമാണ് ഇത്. വാർദ്ധക്യത്തിന്റെ ആകുലതകളിൽ അവർ നീട്ടുന്ന സഹായഹ സ്തമാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ടാണ് വൃദ്ധാലയങ്ങളോട് ഇക്കൂട്ടർക്ക് അനു ഭാവ മേറുന്നത്.

പുതിയ സംസ്കാരത്തിന്റെ പ്രതീകമാണ് വൃദ്ധാലയങ്ങൾ. സ്വാർത്ഥത മുന്നിൽക്കണ്ടു ജീവിക്കുന്ന ഒരു സമൂഹത്തിന്റെ നെറികേടാണ് ഇത്. താൻ താനാകാൻ ആര് ആരോഗ്യവും സമ്പത്തും സമയവും സുഖവു മൊക്കെ പരിത്യജിച്ചുവോ അവരോടു കാട്ടുന്ന നന്ദികേടിന്റെ സ്മാര കമാണ് വൃദ്ധാലയങ്ങൾ.

2. ദിവസം പല സമയങ്ങളിലായി 45 മിനിറ്റ് നടക്കാം. മാനസിക വ്യായാമവും അനിവാര്യം. സുഹൃത്തുക്കളുമായി സംസാരിക്കുക. വായിക്കുക. ചെസ് കളിക്കാനും പദപ്രശ്നം പൂരിപ്പിക്കാനുമൊക്കെ ഇഷ്ടമുള്ളവർക്ക് അതുമാകാം. ഓർമക്കുറവിനെ തടയാൻ ഇവ സഹായിക്കും. 

3. തുടർച്ചയായി ഒരുമണിക്കൂറിൽ കൂടുതൽ ഒരേ ഇരിപ്പ് ഇരിക്കരുത്. ഇടയ്ക്ക് എഴുന്നേൽക്കുക, നടക്കുക. 

4. ഒരു രോഗവുമില്ലെങ്കിലും മൂന്നോ നാലോ മാസത്തിൽ ഒരിക്കൽ കുടുംബഡോക്ടറെ കാണണം. വർഷത്തിൽ രണ്ടു പ്രാവശ്യം ഹെൽത്ത് ചെക്ക് അപ്. 

5. ഇൻഫ്ലുവൻസ, ന്യൂമോണിയ വാക്സിനുകൾ, 50 വയസ്സിനു ശേഷം നൽകുന്ന ഹെർപിസ് സോസ്റ്റർ തുടങ്ങിയ പ്രതിരോധ കുത്തിവയ്പുകൾ (അഡൽറ്റ് വാക്സിനേഷൻ) കൃത്യമായ ഇടവേളകളിൽ എടുക്കുക. 

6. കാൻസർ സാധ്യതകൾ കണ്ടെത്താനുള്ള പരിശോധനകൾ നടത്തുക. 

7. ആരോഗ്യകരമായ ലൈംഗിക ജീവിതം ഉറപ്പാക്കുക. 

8. കാഴ്ചയും കേൾവിയും കുറയുന്ന ഘട്ടമെത്തിയതിനു ശേഷം ചികിൽസ തേടരുത്. അതിനു മുൻപുതന്നെ പരിശോധനകൾ നടത്തുക. 

9. സ്വന്തം ചികിൽസയ്ക്കു വേണ്ടിയുള്ള പണം യൗവന കാലത്തുതന്നെ മാറ്റിവയ്ക്കാൻ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കുക. 

10. പല വയോജനങ്ങളും പേരക്കുട്ടികളെ നോക്കുന്ന തിരക്കിലാണിപ്പോൾ. മാനസിക ഉല്ലാസത്തിന് ഇതു നല്ലതാണെങ്കിലും അച്ഛനും അമ്മയ്ക്കും പ്രായമായെന്ന ബോധ്യം മക്കൾക്കുണ്ടാകണം. അതനുസരിച്ചാകണം അവരോടുള്ള പെരുമാറ്റം. 

11. പ്രായമാകുകയെന്നതു ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ ഭാഗമാണ്. ബാല്യവും കൗമാരവും യൗവനവും പോലെ ഈ ഘട്ടവും ആസ്വദിക്കാനാകണം. ഇതിനായി സ്വയം ശ്രമിക്കുന്നതിനൊപ്പം കുടുംബത്തിന്റെയും സമൂഹത്തിന്റെയും പരിഗണനയും അത്യാവശ്യം.
