A handy tip for appreciation versus criticism is this: When acknowledging people for their good work, always use their name, however, when handing out criticism in front of a crowd, try to generalize as otherwise, you will end up embarrassing people. 

Instead of simply thanking your team, use their names if possible in the given time limit. This will make your appreciation seem much more personalized.

Make a list of all the people you’d genuinely like to thank. If you have time, briefly talk about how they’ve helped you in your journey.

Emphasize how important they’ve been and how. Speak from the heart, and it will definitely ring true.

For phrasing, try something along the lines of:

You’ve given your thanks to so many people who’ve made you who you are. The stage has gotten quite emotional at this point, and your audience is looking at you.

Like any other form of speech you need 3 parts:- an opening, the body or middle where you put all your acknowledgments, and a conclusion.

1. Introduction/opening

In your introduction or opening give the reason for the occasion and why it is you're going to thank everyone. What you say, and how you say it, will set the tone for the remainder of the speech.

Depending on the number of people on your 'thank you/appreciation' list and the amount of time you have, consider including a small story about the lead-up making this event possible. A well-chosen personal anecdote will always go down well because it lets those listening share your experience more deeply.

It is 374 words long. When spoken it will take approximately 2 minutes + to deliver. That's about the right length. It's brief and covers everything needed.

"Who's considered the incredible power of thank you?  Those two words express gratitude, humility, understanding, as well as acknowledgement.

I am here with you: my family, many of my friends and colleagues because I need to say all of that, and then some more.

Thank you for coming to share my being given the Fred Smith Award for Community Service. It's very humbling.

There's a phrase I'm sure you know: it takes a village to raise a child. In this case it's not a child that's been raised but awareness and a long needed community resource -  the  Parksville Community Literacy Center.  The village behind it and me, is you.

In particular thank you to my wife Marlene who has always understood and shared my conviction that communities are healthiest when its resources are equally shared, and that the ability to read underpins long term social and economic well being.

I know the hours I spent after work helping to establish our new Center tested her, especially when I was home late, again.

Remarkably she continues to support, and love me.  For that I will always be grateful.

Mary Hill, Catherine Beech and Matthew Fall from the Fred Smith Foundation – thank you for sharing the vision of an integrated community and for being so incredibly supportive. You understood what we were trying to achieve and helped make it possible. Your generous gifts of time, expertise and funds are deeply appreciated.

This award may have my name on it, but in truth it belongs to everybody who has worked to make the center a reality. Have you got a spare day or two? If I called out all those people we'd be here for quite some time! Instead, I'll simply say thank you. You know who you are.

The time and effort you've given ensures that the Parksville people who want it will have access to effective literacy programs and resources. That is a priceless gift.  As Nobel Peace Prize winner former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan said “Literacy is a bridge from misery to hope.”

Tips to help you get your thank you speech right

Many people make the assumption that once they've got the words of their speech sorted, they're set to go.

That's not true! Practice completes the process.

Giving yourself several  rehearsals, firstly by yourself and then in front of  friends or family, will help enormously. Click the link for detailed information about  how to rehearse effectively .

For the condensed and shortened version covering good rehearsal practice follow the points below.

1. Content check

Before investing too much time and energy into rehearsing your speech say it through in front of a few trusted friends or colleagues.  It is much, much easier to change text prior to practicing it than after you've begun working with it. Ask them to listen:

  • to make sure you've included everyone you should, in the right order and thanked them for the right things.
  • for tone. Does the vocabulary fit the occasion? Are the stories right? Is the speech positive? Is it inclusive?

Edit as needed, and then have your test audience listen again. 

Getting the timing right is an essential part of making it a success. Go on too long and people stop listening. Be too brief and there's a danger you've missed things out.

The only way to find out how long your speech is, is to time yourself as you say it out loud at a normal speaking rate. If it's too long, look for areas you can cut. Maybe you need to group a few  more people together or perhaps you need to shorten some of the specific examples about why it is you're thanking someone.  If it's too short, add more detail.  Repeat until you get the length right.

3. Use cue cards

If you're at all worried about forgetting things, losing your place or muddling what you want to say, use cue cards. They'll take the anxiety away.

Write the main points of your thank you speech on cue cards. Good notes will keep you on track while ensuring you cover everything you want to like, for instance, the name of every person you want to thank and why.

There are many ways to show someone that you appreciate them. You can buy them a gift. You can write them a thank-you note. And in some cases, you can give a speech in their honor. There are plenty of occasions when you may find yourself in a position to give an appreciation speech.

If you’re graduating from high school or college, you might give a speech thanking friends and family members for their support.

If you own a business, you might tell your employees “ thank you for your support ” as part of a speech. Speeches can also be a great way to say “ I appreciate you ” to the people in your life who support you.

Here, we break down the steps that go into crafting an excellent appreciation speech. We also include excerpts of speeches from an assortment of occasions and audiences to draw inspiration from. 

Steps for writing an appreciation speech

Step 1: Know Your Audience — And Your Place

Your speech will depend on a variety of factors. But the most important ones to consider are the setting and the crowd. If your speech is a casual toast between friends over a bottle of wine, it will be a lot more casual.

You can rely on personal anecdotes and the language you use will be more personal. If you’re giving a formal speech in front of colleagues though, your tone will be very different. Your speech will be a lot more structured and concise. 

Step 2: Create an Outline

Whether your appreciation speech is long or short, it’s always a good idea to craft an outline ahead of time. This will help you make sure you don’t forget to mention anything you want to cover. Overall, most speeches will break down like the following:

  • Introduction: In an introduction, you will let the audience know who you are and give a preface of what you plan to say. For instance, if you’re recognizing a specific person in an appreciation speech, give a quick rundown of why they’re worthy of appreciation.
  • Body: Here, you’ll flesh out the points you made in your introduction. You can give more specific examples of things the subject of your speech has done, and you’ll expand on why those actions deserve gratitude. 
  • Conclusion: In this final section, you can reiterate the points you made earlier in the speech. 

Step 3: Grab People’s Attention with Gratitude

Start with a strong opening line. In a more formal speech, a quote about gratitude can be an excellent way to set the tone. In a more casual speech, you can avoid a quote. However, you should still stick with the theme of gratitude.   

Step 4: Be Personal and Specific

In casual and formal speeches alike, you should feel free to be specific. If you’re giving a speech in honor of one person, you can list all of the things they do that deserve appreciation. If you’re thanking other people for their support, you can list the ways they helped you.

Personal anecdotes are a lot more engaging for listeners. They will also help you feel more connected to your material. The more connected you feel, the more confident you’ll be in speaking. These personal anecdotes can be funny, poignant, or a blend of the two. Again, this will largely be dictated by your audience and the setting of your speech.    

Step 5: Practice Makes Perfect

For a casual speech like an appreciation toast, you can probably get away with speaking off the cuff. But any kind of pre-planned appreciation speech definitely benefits from repeated practice.

The more comfortable you are with the speech, the easier it will be for you to deliver it. If you don’t know your speech inside and out, there’s a good chance that you can be tripped up by certain words or turns of phrase. 

Step 6: Time Yourself

When you’re practicing your speech, you should also be timing yourself. This means you should have a stopwatch going while you read your speech aloud. Speeches can be deceptive.

A few pages don’t seem like they should take that long to read. If you only read them over in your head, that can reinforce the notion that your speech isn’t that long. But it takes a lot longer to read something aloud than it does reading it to yourself.

If you don’t practice it out loud ahead of time, you may panic in the middle of your actual delivery. If you fear your speech is taking too long, you might start to read faster and faster, which could make the speech incomprehensible. Practicing it out loud can help you hit your ideal time target without having to rush.   

Step 7: Keep Your Notes Handy

Even if you’ve practiced your speech until it’s practically etched into your brain, you always want to keep notes or an outline with you. No matter how much you practice, you may find yourself freezing up in the moment. If you don’t have notes handy, you might flounder. On the other hand though, you also shouldn’t keep your whole speech with you.

If you do, you might find yourself relying on it like a security blanket. You may end up just reading the whole speech straight from the paper without engaging with your audience at all. Both ends of the spectrum are too extreme, so it’s best to find a happy medium. Some people just keep their outline with them.

Other people write out the first sentence of each paragraph to jog their memory and help them orient themselves. As you practice, you’ll find the method that works best for you.

Step 8: Do a Test Run in Front of an Audience

Practicing for a speech on your own is important. But once you feel more comfortable with the speech, you should practice in front of someone. Ideally, you’ll rehearse it in front of people several times until you can keep your nervous responses in check.

This means delivering the speech without your heart racing and your speech speeding up to match.   

Step 9: Weed Out Any Trouble Spots

Every time you practice your speech, you should be refining it until you can’t improve it any further. One of the big things you should be looking out for is your usage of filler words or speech disfluencies.

Speech disfluencies encompass those little noises like “um”, “er”, and “uh” that we tend to use when we aren’t confident. These can make people tune out because your discomfort makes them feel awkward in turn.

As you practice, pay attention to places where you’re inserting those disfluencies. Keep practicing them until you become comfortable enough to leave them out. Or, rewrite those sections so they come to you more naturally.  

Step 10: End On a Good Note

Above all else, remember that this speech is intended to be a positive thing. An appreciation speech should make someone’s day .

Remember to end the speech by reaffirming specifically why you are showing appreciation.    

Now that we’ve gone into what makes a good appreciation speech, let’s see some examples. These are just excerpts from longer speeches, but they may help demonstrate the sort of content you might be looking for.

We supported each other during tough times. We used each other’s examples to fuel us towards getting better grades. When someone was in danger of not graduating, we pulled together to get everyone to the finish line. We all owe a lot to our families for their support. But we should also be sure to appreciate ourselves.”

“I’d like to take a moment to raise a glass in appreciation for Bethany. Everyone here has one thing in common — Bethany’s friendship. She has always had an uncanny knack for finding people in need of a community and bringing us together. From there, we’ve been able to find the other things that connect us. But if it weren’t for Bethany, most of us would have missed out on enriching, life-changing friendships. Bethany — here’s to you!”

“As the year draws to an end, I’m proud to announce that it’s the company’s strongest year yet. We have grown by leaps and bounds and still managed to maintain profitability. Our client satisfaction scores have never been higher. And each and every one of you has played a role in our success.

"I want to thank our sales division for going above and beyond in meeting our clients’ needs. I want to thank our marketing department for creating materials that are very transparent about our mission. I want to thank the managers for leading their divisions by example. I could stand up here and tell you a half dozen things I appreciate about every person in this room, but I’m sure you’re all ready to hit the buffet line. So I’ll conclude by saying that I appreciate all of your contributions, and am so proud to be on a team with each and every one of you.”

The moment you get done with your speech there are so many things that you think you should address before leaving but then it becomes a cyclone of thoughts and you are lost.

You want to say something but don’t know where to start. For this sole reason plan your end but even importantly plan what to do after the end.

7 steps of what to do after your speech ends

Here are 7 steps you can follow right after your speech ends. These will guide you when you don’t know what to do after your presentation is over.

  • Thank and appreciate your audience
  • Give them details to contact you
  • Add sources where they can find your work
  • Ask for feedback
  • Reflect on your mistakes
  •  Find new ways to improvise and master

1. Thank and appreciate your audience

The audience is a very significant part of your speech without which, your speech would have no value. They are the ones who are listening to you and you are talking to them and for them.

The people sitting in the audience throughout your presentation listening to you should be given some acknowledgement. Therefore, thank your audience for being patient and attentive.

Thank them for being participative, thank them for their attention, and thank them for their presence. They will appreciate you acknowledging them.

Types of ‘Thank You’ in a presentation

Primarily there are 2 types of thanking. One where the speaker uses a ‘formal tone’ to thank the audience and the other where he emphasizes the action and simply says a thank you and leaves. Both of these ways are simple, basic and effective. Let me provide you with an example for both.

The first type is the formal thank you where the speaker can say, “Thank you to all the people sitting in the audience and taking out the time to be here and attend my presentation. I appreciate each one of you for contributing to this presentation, by listening to me talk.”

In the second type, you will leave the audience pensive and then say a quick thank you . This is because when you leave on a thoughtful note, it compels the audience to think about what you said and it reinforces the message of your presentation.

2. Give them details to contact you

Provide appropriate detials and methods for the audience to reach out to you after the speech or presentation is complete.

You can provide them with your email ID, phone number or both!

One compulsory source that you can leave is your email ID. It is convenient and professional. One perk of this is that it is easy to track as compared to text or call.

  • Phone Number (Optional)

Adding your personal phone number in contact details is completely optional and upon you. While addressing a large crowd would you want to give out your personal details?

If no, you can provide an alternative, like a number/email ID if you have one which is meant only for that particular event alone. It might also make it easier to track the queries coming in for that event by providing a unique number.

You can choose to give or not give your contact number according to the type, place, time and situation of your presentation.

How to give your contact details to the audience

There 3 ways you can give out contact details:

  • Add your details to the last slide of your PowerPoint presentation. This is the most used and common method that the speaker uses while giving a presentation.

  • Leave a stack of your visiting cards on the table and the audience can either come to collect it, or you can distribute it among them.
  • Provide a handout at the end of your presentation which includes your contact information (more on this below).
  • You can also tell the audience to connect to the host of the event so as to not cause chaos. Hand over the exact details to the host.

3. Add sources where they can find your work

Different sources where the audience can check out your work.

If you have used facts, quotes or other reference material for your presentation, the audience might want to know the source of this material.

A simple way to give the audience access to your sources is to create a handout including all the sources of your work for them to refer to. These handouts can be distributed after the speech is over with the other necessities such as your contact details.

 Here are some sources that you can mention/leave in your presentation:

  • Blog links or website
  • YouTube channel
  • Pamphlets of your company

4. Ask for feedback

After giving your presentation, ask the audience how did they like your presentation. Don’t be too direct and coercive. Be polite and gentle in your tone.

Asking for feedback will help you know where you went wrong and you can work on it to better your skill so that you don’t make the same mistakes the next time.

The audience’s perspective is the most crucial and truthful. They will give you honest feedback.

Also, if there is someone in the audience who you admire and someone who has knowledge about the topic you presented or is a well-known public speaker you can explicitly ask for their feedback.

It will be more valuable and beneficial as compared to somebody who is unaware or unbriefed about the topic.

One alternative is that you can make a survey form and distribute the form among the audience. Mention all the things you want to know.  The survey method is useful, effective and the most used.

For instance, nowadays in most virtual presentations, a google feedback form is always provided after the presentation. Filling the form benefits the speaker and the speaker gets an insight into what the audience thinks about her/his presentation.

5. Socialize

After the presentation is completed go around and talk to people. What will this do? Socializing will help you make a strong connection with the audience.

The audience will get to know you better.

Having a conversation with people you have presented in front of will also help you gain contacts and connections. You will meet new people and know their perspectives and take on your presentation.

At times it so happens that people don’t often want to ask questions in front of a large crowd. So they may want to ask them personally and socializing will give them the perfect opportunity to come up to you. You can answer their questions or doubts in person.

One more benefit of socializing is that it helps you build your reputation and gives out the image of a humble and modest speaker. The audience admires when the speaker leaves his position on the stage and joins the crowd as a normal man.

6. Reflect on your mistakes

After all the necessities are met, what next? Don’t just be like it’s over so let’s leave it. No, until and unless you don’t reflect on your mistakes how will you learn? It’s pivotal that you know how to improve and not repeat the same things the next time.

One way that will help you discern your mistakes is to get your presentation video recorded which will make it easier, convenient and advantageous for you to reflect on your mistakes.

You can also ask an audience member for your next speech to video record and voice record your presentation so as to help you better reflect on how you can improve the next time you speak on stage.

When you sit and figure out where you went wrong, the next time you give a speech or presentation you will be 10 times extra careful to avoid it. This will not only make you a better speaker or presenter but will also mould you to be an improved human.

Making mistakes is acceptable but learning from those mistakes is what makes you creditable.

7. Find new ways to improvise and master

Delivering in the same way for every speech will make you less interesting and captivating. Try new methods and add some spice to your constant ways of delivering.

If the people in the audience have already attended any of your speeches hitherto they will not find you that intriguing as before. So, be creative, innovative and think out of the box, but most importantly be you.

The audience will connect with you only if you are authentic and genuine.

You can make your speech engaging by playing a quiz, sharing with the audience your personal experience or your take on the topic or just doing fun activities. All this makes your speech entrancing and different.

Or maybe your English-speaking neighbor brings your family dinner because you were at the hospital for surgery. That’s super nice! So how could you express how thankful you are?

Saying thank you has power. It can help you feel gratitude, share joy and kindness with others, and make other people smile and feel happy.

I want you to know how ALL the different ways to say thank you in English so you can express your appreciation in any situation.

In today’s lesson you’ll NEW ways to say thank you when:

  • Your colleague offers to get you some coffee from the cafeteria
  • Your boss holds the door open for you
  • A company offers you a job or a promotion
  • You end a business meeting with new clients
  • Your husband/wife offers to clean the dishes because you had a long day
  • Your friend calls and remembers you on your birthday
  • Your team at works stays late to finish a project on time
  • Your friend helps you during a difficult time after your mom passed away

Say Thank You in English — Casual Situations

Did your friend just wish you and your husband a happy anniversary? Did your office celebrate your birthday with cake? Did a stranger hold a door open for you at the post office?

For these everyday, informal experiences, we can use a variety of expression to say thanks.

Thank you. / Thanks so much. / Thanks a lot. / Thanks a bunch. / Thanks a ton. / Thanks!

Did your colleague at work just bring you a cup of coffee? Say:

  • “Thanks a bunch! I really need an extra dose of caffeine right now!”
  • “Thanks! You’re awesome for thinking of me.”
  • “Thank you!”

I really appreciate it. / You shouldn’t have.

Did your office just give you a birthday gift or a surprise party at work? Say:

  • “I can’t believe you did this! You shouldn’t have. But thank you so much. This was very kind of you.”

Some daily situations – at work and in our personal lives – require more formal language. And this is often true in writing.

Sometimes we have very difficult times in our lives. Maybe a loved one becomes ill. Someone passes away. Or perhaps you lose a job.

If you are writing an official business email or business letter, then it’s best to use professional, formal expressions to show your thanks or appreciation.

For example, you may be writing to thank someone or to thank another company for their help. Or perhaps you want to express your gratitude for them working with you this year.

Writing a thank you speech can be intimidating. It is challenging to remember all of the people who have helped you along the way. If you recently reached a personal, spiritual or career milestone, you may be wondering how to compose a ‘thank you’ speech. A ‘thank you’ speech needs to identify all of the people you are thankful for, as well as the specific things you are thankful for and their personal or professional meaning to you. While ‘thank you’ speeches are relatively straightforward, they can be tricky to write, especially if the list of people to thank is very large or very small.

Prioritizing Your Thank You List

Step 1 Make sure you have a complete list.

  • Who helped you become the person you are today?
  • Who offered you the most encouragement?
  • What specific contributions are you thanking people for?
  • Who gave you the time of day when you really needed help?
  • Who offered valuable expertise at crucial moments?

Step 2 Start ordering your list.

  • For instance, under the category expertise, you could rank individuals from most to least important contributions of expertise to the project or award you are giving the speech for.

Step 3 Determine the top ranked people.

  • For instance, a ‘thank you’ speech at a wedding should be no longer than three minutes long.

Composing Your Speech

Step 1 Outline the structure of your speech.

  • In 1985, Sally Field spoke from the heart in her Oscar thank you speech. She said, “I can’t deny the fact that you like me, right now you like me!”
  • In 1970, at the age of 61, John Wayne was genuine about how long it took him to win, upon accepting the award for best actor for the role of one-eyed Rooster Cogburn. He said, “Wow! If I’d known that, I would have put the patch on 35 years ago.”

Step 4 Express humility.

  • For instance, you could say: “I am so humbled by this honor.”
  • You could also use humor. For instance, when George Clooney won best supporting actor in 2006 but lost the best director award, he drew on his self-deprecating humor. He said, “Well, it looks like I’m not winning best director…”

Step 5 Avoid verbosity.

  • If it is a short ‘thank you’ speech, it is often best to skip the intro entirely. The audience will know why you are giving the speech, so follow the example of Abraham Lincoln who always skipped the introduction.

Step 7 Write about the most important people on your list.

  • Once you have written about the most important individuals, you can always edit the speech later for concision.
  • Budget your time for each person. Remember that if you spend too much time on any one person, you may not be able to get to others who still really need to be thanked.
  • If your speech needs to be really short, you could say: "I would like to thank Charley, my wonderful husband for supporting me through the long nights. I couldn't have done it without you. Thanks to my beautiful daughters, Kiera and Emily. Mommy can play more now. To Jeff Goldstein of Caracas, for feeding my crew; to Jake, Mindy, Paul, and Gwen for staying up so late, so we could get it right..."

Step 8 Finish composing the body of your speech.

  • To recognize people by function, you could say, “I also want to thank everyone who brightened up this long journey with good humor, such as John, Johnny, Arjen, Peter, Ann, Zoe, etc.”
  • So, for example, you might say: "And for the catering, thanks to Joe, Mike, Mindy, and Jeanette."

Step 9 Compose a conclusion.

  • “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was, “thank you,” that would suffice (Meister Eckhart)
  • “We cannot do great things on this Earth, only small things with great love” (Mother Teresa)
  • “I can no other answer make, but, thanks, and thanks” (William Shakespeare)

Timing, Memorizing and Practicing Your Speech

Step 1 Time your speech.

  • You could try using online script timers to get a rough sense of your speech time. However, you should still practice with a real timer because everyone speaks at a slightly different pace.

Step 2 Write keywords or phrases on note cards.

  • You could dress up in the clothes you will be wearing at the event.
  • Try practicing the speech at the event location to get more comfortable.

How to Write a Thank You Speech

Like any form of writing you need the basic three parts in your speech. Here’s how to write each parts of the speech:

1. The Introduction

Typically, this is where you explain the reason as tho why there is an event as of the moment. Just like in any writing, your introduction opens up your whole speech. 2. Body of the Speech
