Shaping a brighter future for Pakistan

Any country wanting economic growth to be sustained and fair needs to ensure it has a productive population. Nutrition, education, jobs, and skills are all key in a country where 23 million children are out of school and well over a third of its population is stunted  . And as importantly, Pakistan needs to make some big decisions on its growing population. Women in Pakistan have many more children than women elsewhere in South Asia or many peer countries.  Pakistan’s population could soon double to 400 million, overwhelming education and health services, and increasingly straining Pakistan’s natural resources.  Reducing the birthrate will also be good for the country’s development and allow women to work outside the home if they so wish. Female labor force participation in Pakistan is one of the lowest in the world, reducing the economic contribution that half of Pakistan’s population can make.  Pakistan’s people are its greatest asset, but only if the country is able to invest a lot more and a lot better in its children. The future Pakistan will need to manage its economy in a completely different way  . Today, Pakistan’s growth story is one of boom and bust. A few years of strong growth are always followed by a crisis. We are in the middle of such a crisis. To avoid such crises in the future, both the state’s revenue collection and its private sector must be strengthened. Efforts to broaden the tax net and bolster tax administration will permanently increase tax revenues without continuing to increase the burden on those already paying taxes. The country’s private sector needs to be made more competitive through an improved business environment, increased openness to trade and investment, and reforms in the energy sector  . Caring for the environment is a key concern. Water needs to be better managed. Today, more than 80% of Pakistan’s water irrigates crops that generate less than 5% of the economy, and much is wasted.  Better infrastructure, management, and pricing that reflects the cost of service and water’s scarcity will go a long way toward improving water efficiency. Efforts will also be needed to tackle air and water pollution, including how we use plastics. All of these will have to be underpinned by a governance framework that is transparent and fosters accountability in how Pakistan is run. Politicians and public leaders should be more aligned with citizen needs. Too often, we have seen policies being implemented that do not necessarily benefit the general population, but just a few. Some of the reforms, particularly those that redistribute rents from elites to the general population, will be difficult and encounter opposition. But, over the past three and a half years that I have been the World Bank’s Country Director for Pakistan, I have seen many things that make me hopeful: Committed and capable politicians and civil servants that have the interest of Pakistan’s people in their hearts; Strong institutions that have withstood turbulent times  ; A curious, dynamic and impatient youth population that wants to conquer the world; Families that work hard to give their children a better future; A private sector that can be world-class under the right circumstances; A courageous and charitable population that comes together as the need arises. The need is arising now to chart a new direction for the country. My most sincere hope is that when Pakistan looks back in 2047 when it turns 100 years old, it sees the years ahead of us as the years that enabled a bright future  . Our today topic is about “Essay How Can We Make Pakistan Strong And Stable Country in English”. Muslims of subcontinent got a separate homeland after several hardships. This country is Pakistan. Allah has blessed this country with many things. Pakistan is an underdeveloped country with thousands of natural resources and fertile land. Pakistan’s economy is declining day by day. And the country is destabilizing and going to be weak. To make our country strong and self-sufficient first of all make all the possible resources in their use. Expand the cultivation of crops, using natural resources in the right manner, preparing raw materials for their country which are used in industry. Avoid importing things. Increase the export of the country. Pakistan is very famous for its fertile land. The government should pay a subsidy to farmers. Farmers are the real wealth of the country. But our farmers are neglected. No proper attention is taken to mineral resources.

We should adopt proper methods of farming and cultivation. Give the farmers different opportunities. We can increase our economy by the export of crops, raw crops, fruits, cereals, vegetables, medicines and sports accessories. Pakistan is the bigger manufacturer of medicine, sports accessories, and fabric. Pakistan is underdeveloped country. If the economy of the country will strong, then that country will be able to stand in the row of a developed country.

Youth is the building block of the country. Stronger the youth, the more stable and developed the nation is. The role of youth in How Can We Make Pakistan Strong very important. Youth is the torch bearer for a nation.  The government of the country should cater the needs of the youth provide them education, basic facilities, health, employment, and opportunity to show their talent. If the youth is not in the right direction then it deteriorates the society. The must get a proper education. Serve the country in their respective fields. Youth should have ample opportunities for employment.  Pakistan has a big population of youth. According to an estimated survey, 103 million or 63% population of the country lies below the age of 25 years. The male literacy rate is 53% and the female literacy rate is below 42%. 15% youth is unemployed. Our youth is lagging behind in every field of life. Education is the most important weapon of youth and everyone get success in their life through education. A country is stable when its youth is educated and employed.

Pakistan is the nuclear country. Some efforts on the youth make our country’s economy strong and stable. It is necessary to use natural resources wisely. Pakistan came into being on the base of Islamic ideology. Islam teaches us the religion of peace, unity, and harmony. If we follow QURAN and SUNNAH in every aspect of life, we will stand as a strong and stable nation.

It is no doubt that Pakistan needs to restructure itself as a country. It's not just about changing a few laws here and there, Pakistan needs to look at how to rerun the country so it is a better and safer place to live. Basically, it needs an entire new game plan. Even though it's easier said than done, here are some ways I believe Pakistan should seek to change and build itself into a better country.

1. Ban Child labor

My recent visit to Lahore has made me realize how big of an issue this is. Kids should be counting 123s and reciting ABCs, and instead they are selling and begging on the road. All child labor should be eradicated. It doesn’t just sabotage human rights laws and basic human nature, but it also ruins the future of social and economic development for the future of our country.

2. Medical Aid

Pakistan has the second largest population of kids out of school. The country needs to focus less on building large shopping malls and hotels and more on building public school with attainable fees for the poor. Survey shows Balochistan with the greatest number of out of school children. This region also however, is the one with the least schools. And, 70 percent of these children are out of school and our country needs to take better actions to decrease this number. Education will lead our country to better morals, smarter tactics and educated decisions.

3. Women's Equal Rights

The women of Pakistan are extremely talented and inspiring. Women should be taught more to be businesswomen than housewives which can keep the economy booming and improve their quality of life. Woman need to take a stand to change how they are perceived to the world. The government needs to establish better schools for women and create workplace laws to protect women from harassment and sexual predators. We need to encourage the women of our country to be independent and have a voice. This will lead to a stronger and more successful country.

4. Public Health

Pakistan needs to put an end to its drastic maternal and child mortality rate. This is Pakistan’s most devastating and large scale public health issue. Half a million new born babies die each year due to unsanitary situations and uneducated midwives. This number can plummet with the help of training more nurses and midwives. Another major issue in Pakistan’s public aid is nutrition. A whopping 40 percent of children are underweight and many of those also affected by stunting. This is calculated to cost the country three percent of GDP each year, through the shortened productivity of young adults through malnutrition. Our country will thrive when the population is wholesome and healthy.

5. Religious Freedom

Secularism will allow Pakistan to flourish economically and socially on a whole other level. If Pakistan can put citizenship over religion the country will be undeniably more united. Secularism will give Pakistan the human rights push it needs to value all its citizens equally. Pakistan is in dire need of a new rule of law that can help the country progress without tarnishing its religious minorities.

6. Change in Government

The last 65 years of Pakistan’s history have been a tug between democracy and dictatorship (over 30 years in dictatorship). The nation still has not come to a decision as to which form of government would be best for it, a nation that has always been involved in political, social or economic crisis. Franklin D. Roosevelt once said in his speech “Let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and senators and congressmen and government officials, but the voters of this country.” It is unjust for someone to assume dictatorship is better for Pakistan’s well being. Surely a governance as reasonable and volatile as democracy would be the best fit for any country. Give the people what they want.

7. Encourage Sports

Pakistan has a grand population of 182.1 million people. In the 2016 Rio Olympics not a single athlete from Pakistan qualified to enter the Olympics. Finland has a population of 5.4 Million people and has received 302 gold medals in the 2012 Olympics. This is just one example of Pakistan not even skimming its potential. Pakistani cricket team cannot receive the home field advantage it needs to flourish in the world cup. A 2014 Blackwell study suggests sports teams gain a 33 percent advantage when playing in their home field. The further they travel the more this percentage goes against them. Our country doesn’t even pertain the means to host a cricket game in its current state of terrorism.

8. Energy Solutions

It's 2016 and Pakistan still suffers from load shedding. Pakistan needs to fund a budget to take care of this problem and look into alternative energy uses. We cannot leave this in the hands of politicians. Schools need to teach children about energy conservation, and our scientists need to focus on creating cheaper energy solutions.

9. Increase Tourism

Pakistan has some of the most breathtaking views and beautiful scenery in the world. Many have compared Azad Kashmir and Skardu to those views of Switzerland. If our country can bring in more outside tourist our economy will be booming.

10. Love your country

Last thing is to take pride in the country you are from. Spread positivity and encourage people to see Pakistan in a different light. Pakistan is rich in culture and cuisine and landscapes. Educate yourself about its history and learn your language. If you can’t love your own country how do you expect others to respect it?

19 Lessons I'll Never Forget from Growing Up In a Small Town

There have been many lessons learned..

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

1. The importance of traditions.

Sometimes traditions seem like a silly thing, but the fact of it is that it's part of who you are. You grew up this way and, more than likely, so did your parents. It is something that is part of your family history and that is more important than anything.

2. How to be thankful for family and friends.

No matter how many times they get on your nerves or make you mad, they are the ones who will always be there and you should never take that for granted.

3. How to give back.

When tragedy strikes in a small town, everyone feels obligated to help out because, whether directly or indirectly, it affects you too. It is easy in a bigger city to be able to disconnect from certain problems. But in a small town those problems affect everyone.

4. What the word "community" really means.

Along the same lines as #3, everyone is always ready and willing to lend a helping hand when you need one in a small town and to me that is the true meaning of community. It's working together to build a better atmosphere, being there to raise each other up, build each other up, and pick each other up when someone is in need. A small town community is full of endless support whether it be after a tragedy or at a hometown sports game. Everyone shows up to show their support.

5. That it isn't about the destination, but the journey.

People say this to others all the time, but it takes on a whole new meaning in a small town. It is true that life is about the journey, but when you're from a small town, you know it's about the journey because the journey probably takes longer than you spend at the destination. Everything is so far away that it is totally normal to spend a couple hours in the car on your way to some form of entertainment. And most of the time, you're gonna have as many, if not more, memories and laughs on the journey than at the destination.

6. The consequences of making bad choices.

Word travels fast in a small town, so don't think you're gonna get away with anything. In fact, your parents probably know what you did before you even have a chance to get home and tell them. And forget about being scared of what your teacher, principle, or other authority figure is going to do, you're more afraid of what your parents are gonna do when you get home.

7. To trust people, until you have a reason not to.

Everyone deserves a chance. Most people don't have ill-intentions and you can't live your life guarding against every one else just because a few people in your life have betrayed your trust.

8. To be welcoming and accepting of everyone.

While small towns are not always extremely diverse, they do contain people with a lot of different stories, struggle, and backgrounds. In a small town, it is pretty hard to exclude anyone because of who they are or what they come from because there aren't many people to choose from. A small town teaches you that just because someone isn't the same as you, doesn't mean you can't be great friends.

9. How to be my own, individual person.

In a small town, you learn that it's okay to be who you are and do your own thing. You learn that confidence isn't how beautiful you are or how much money you have, it's who you are on the inside.

10. How to work for what I want.

Nothing comes easy in life. They always say "gardens don't grow overnight" and if you're from a small town you know this both figuratively and literally. You certainly know gardens don't grow overnight because you've worked in a garden or two. But you also know that to get to the place you want to be in life it takes work and effort. It doesn't just happen because you want it to.

11. How to be great at giving directions.

If you're from a small town, you know that you will probably only meet a handful of people in your life who ACTUALLY know where your town is. And forget about the people who accidentally enter into your town because of google maps. You've gotten really good at giving them directions right back to the interstate.

12. How to be humble .

My small town has definitely taught me how to be humble. It isn't always about you, and anyone who grows up in a small town knows that. Everyone gets their moment in the spotlight, and since there's so few of us, we're probably best friends with everyone so we are as excited when they get their moment of fame as we are when we get ours.

13. To be well-rounded.

Going to a small town high school definitely made me well-rounded. There isn't enough kids in the school to fill up all the clubs and sports teams individually so be ready to be a part of them all.

14. How to be great at conflict resolution.

In a small town, good luck holding a grudge. In a bigger city you can just avoid a person you don't like or who you've had problems with. But not in a small town. You better resolve the issue fast because you're bound to see them at least 5 times a week.

15. The beauty of getting outside and exploring.

One of my favorite things about growing up in a rural area was being able to go outside and go exploring and not have to worry about being in danger. There is nothing more exciting then finding a new place somewhere in town or in the woods and just spending time there enjoying the natural beauty around you.

16. To be prepared for anything.

You never know what may happen. If you get a flat tire, you better know how to change it yourself because you never know if you will be able to get ahold of someone else to come fix it. Mechanics might be too busy , or more than likely you won't even have enough cell service to call one.

17. That you don't always have to do it alone.

It's okay to ask for help. One thing I realized when I moved away from my town for college, was how much my town has taught me that I could ask for help is I needed it. I got into a couple situations outside of my town where I couldn't find anyone to help me and found myself thinking, if I was in my town there would be tons of people ready to help me. And even though I couldn't find anyone to help, you better believe I wasn't afraid to ask.

18. How to be creative.

When you're at least an hour away from normal forms of entertainment such as movie theaters and malls, you learn to get real creative in entertaining yourself. Whether it be a night looking at the stars in the bed of a pickup truck or having a movie marathon in a blanket fort at home, you know how to make your own good time.

19. To brush off gossip.

It's all about knowing the person you are and not letting others influence your opinion of yourself. In small towns, there is plenty of gossip. But as long as you know who you really are, it will always blow over.

Grateful Beyond Words: A Letter to My Inspiration

I have never been so thankful to know you..

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

You have taught me that you don't always have to strong. You are allowed to break down as long as you pick yourself back up and keep moving forward. When life had you at your worst moments, you allowed your friends to be there for you and to help you. You let them in and they helped pick you up. Even in your darkest hour you showed so much strength. I know that you don't believe in yourself as much as you should but you are unbelievably strong and capable of anything you set your mind to.

Your passion to make a difference in the world is unbelievable. You put your heart and soul into your endeavors and surpass any personal goal you could have set. Watching you do what you love and watching you make a difference in the lives of others is an incredible experience. The way your face lights up when you finally realize what you have accomplished is breathtaking and I hope that one day I can have just as much passion you have.

Waitlisted for a College Class? Here's What to Do!

Dealing with the inevitable realities of college life..

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Don't freak out

This is a rule you should continue to follow no matter what you do in life, but is especially helpful in this situation.

Email the professor

Around this time, professors are getting flooded with requests from students wanting to get into full classes. This doesn't mean you shouldn't burden them with your email; it means they are expecting interested students to email them. Send a short, concise message telling them that you are interested in the class and ask if there would be any chance for you to get in.

Attend the first class

Often, the advice professors will give you when they reply to your email is to attend the first class. The first class isn't the most important class in terms of what will be taught. However, attending the first class means you are serious about taking the course and aren't going to give up on it.

Keep attending class

Every student is in the same position as you are. They registered for more classes than they want to take and are "shopping." For the first couple of weeks, you can drop or add classes as you please, which means that classes that were once full will have spaces. If you keep attending class and keep up with assignments, odds are that you will have priority. Professors give preference to people who need the class for a major and then from higher to lower class year (senior to freshman).

Have a backup plan

For two weeks, or until I find out whether I get into my waitlisted class, I will be attending more than the usual number of classes. This is so that if I don't get into my waitlisted class, I won't have a credit shortage and I won't have to fall back in my backup class. Chances are that enough people will drop the class, especially if it is very difficult like computer science, and you will have a chance. In popular classes like art and psychology, odds are you probably won't get in, so prepare for that.

Remember that everything works out at the end

Life is full of surprises. So what if you didn't get into the class you wanted? Your life obviously has something else in store for you. It's your job to make sure you make the best out of what you have.

Democracy’s Bedrock:

At the heart of any democracy lies the principle of popular sovereignty, where the people hold the ultimate power to choose their representatives. Free and fair elections, devoid of manipulation or coercion, are the mechanisms through which this power is exercised. They ensure that the government reflects the will of the people, fostering legitimacy and public trust. Without them, democracy becomes a hollow shell, vulnerable to manipulation and instability.

Rule of Law’s Foundation:

Pakistan is a poor country, though it is very rich in its resources and fertile land. There is very poor expansion of Industries and irrigation. No proper attention is taken to have the wealth from mineral resources. These are main sources through which a country can be healthy and strong. To make our country strong and self sufficient in cash and edible crops, we should adopt the modern process of irrigation and cultivation. Sufficient facilities of manure, water supply and seed should be provided to the farmers, so that they can produce more crops and we may save our wealth by importing food crops. A country can not be called a developed country, until it does not expand new industries in all the possible places where resources are easily available. We have a lot of raw cash crops and we earn very little amount of income by exporting them. if we arrange to product export items from them, we can earn many percent more capital by such export. In the days of science and technology, many countries are adopting new technology in all the fields and, as a result, they have reached on the top of technology and research and now they are able to produce peculiar items of house holds and other beneficial machinery. So we also should try our best to have modern technology for the process of our country. The world is divided into two blocks, one is the richest countries block which has very kind of source of income. Thus they have become the fate makers of the poor countries, which are in second block. Our country has also burden of loans and we cannot get rid of it, until we are no able to utilize our all resources of income. Our country has come into being on the theory of Islamism. Islam is the religion of peace, unity and brotherhood among all the Muslims. If we obey the Almighty, follow his orders and act according to Sunnah, we can make our country and nation much stronger in all aspect and we can get our honor. Let us promise to make our country self sufficient in all the fields, wealthy and strong and prevailing unity among the country men.

Brilliant esssy. I admire it. One thing which I would like to add is the population control problem. Pakistan is an L.E.D. (Low economically developed country. The increase in the population of Pakistan is a hindrance in the development of Pakistan. Pakistan lacks in resources already and now the resources are being lacked even more due to the increase in the population caused but the Afghani refugees. What can we do? Well the increase in population also makes it difficult to arrange proper educational and medical facilities and due to the increase in the population the slum and squatter settlements in Pakistab have also increased. The education of girls play a very important role in the population control. In Brazil, illiterate women have an average of 6.5 children but those with secondary education have an average of 2.5 children. It has been estimated that in Pakistan an extra year of school could prevent 60 infant deaths (infant mortality is also a major problem which results in a greater population). Therefore, Pakistan should start a programme to tell the men the benefits of a smaller family and should also launch a birth control compaign.

Staring at a blank page before writing an essay can feel a little daunting . Where do you start? What should your introduction say? And how should you structure your arguments? They are all fair questions and we have the answers! Take the stress out of essay writing with this step-by-step guide – you’ll be typing away in no time. 👩‍💻

What is an essay?

Generally speaking, an essay designates a literary work in which the author defends a point of view or a personal conviction, using logical arguments and literary devices in order to inform and convince the reader.

So – although essays can be broadly split into four categories: argumentative, expository, narrative, and descriptive – an essay can simply be described as a focused piece of writing designed to inform or persuade. 🤔

The purpose of an essay is to present a coherent argument in response to a stimulus or question and to persuade the reader that your position is credible, believable and reasonable. 👌

So, a ‘good’ essay relies on a confident writing style – it’s clear, well-substantiated, focussed, explanatory and descriptive . The structure follows a logical progression and above all, the body of the essay clearly correlates to the tile – answering the question where one has been posed. 

But, how do you go about making sure that you tick all these boxes and keep within a specified word count? Read on for the answer as well as an example essay structure to follow and a handy step-by-step guide to writing the perfect essay – hooray. 🙌

Sometimes, it is helpful to think about your essay like it is a well-balanced argument or a speech – it needs to have a logical structure, with all your points coming together to answer the question in a coherent manner. ⚖️

Of course, essays can vary significantly in length but besides that, they all follow a fairly strict pattern or structure made up of three sections. Lean into this predictability because it will keep you on track and help you make your point clearly. Let’s take a look at the typical essay structure:  

#1 Introduction

Start your introduction with the central claim of your essay. Let the reader know exactly what you intend to say with this essay. Communicate what you’re going to argue, and in what order. The final part of your introduction should also say what conclusions you’re going to draw – it sounds counter-intuitive but it’s not – more on that below. 1️⃣

Make your point, evidence it and explain it. This part of the essay – generally made up of three or more paragraphs depending on the length of your essay – is where you present your argument. The first sentence of each paragraph – much like an introduction to an essay – should summarise what your paragraph intends to explain in more detail. 2️⃣

#3 Conclusion

This is where you affirm your argument – remind the reader what you just proved in your essay and how you did it. This section will sound quite similar to your introduction but – having written the essay – you’ll be summarising rather than setting out your stall. 3️⃣

No essay is the same but your approach to writing them can be. As well as some best practice tips, we have gathered our favourite advice from expert essay-writers and compiled the following 7-step guide to writing a good essay every time. 👍

Now that you have familiarised yourself with the 7 steps standing between you and the perfect essay, let’s take a closer look at each of those stages so that you can get on with crafting your written arguments with confidence . 

This is the most crucial stage in essay writing – r ead the essay prompt carefully and understand the question. Highlight the keywords – like ‘compare,’ ‘contrast’ ‘discuss,’ ‘explain’ or ‘evaluate’ – and let it sink in before your mind starts racing . There is nothing worse than writing 500 words before realising you have entirely missed the brief . 🧐

Unless you are writing under exam conditions , you will most likely have been working towards this essay for some time, by doing thorough background reading. Re-read relevant chapters and sections, highlight pertinent material and maybe even stray outside the designated reading list, this shows genuine interest and extended knowledge. 📚

#3 Make a detailed plan

Following the handy structure we shared with you above, now is the time to create the ‘skeleton structure’ or essay plan. Working from your essay title, plot out what you want your paragraphs to cover and how that information is going to flow. You don’t need to start writing any full sentences yet but it might be useful to think about the various quotes you plan to use to substantiate each section. 📝

Having mapped out the overall trajectory of your essay, you can start to drill down into the detail. First, write the opening sentence for each of the paragraphs in the body section of your essay. Remember – each paragraph is like a mini-essay – the opening sentence should summarise what the paragraph will then go on to explain in more detail. 🖊️

Next, it's time to write the bulk of your words and flesh out your arguments. Follow the ‘point, evidence, explain’ method. The opening sentences – already written – should introduce your ‘points’, so now you need to ‘evidence’ them with corroborating research and ‘explain’ how the evidence you’ve presented proves the point you’re trying to make. ✍️

With a rough draft in front of you, you can take a moment to read what you have written so far. Are there any sections that require further substantiation? Have you managed to include the most relevant material you originally highlighted in your background reading? Now is the time to make sure you have evidenced all your opinions and claims with the strongest quotes, citations and material. 📗

This is your final chance to re-read your essay and go over it with a fine-toothed comb before pressing ‘submit’. We highly recommend leaving a day or two between finishing your essay and the final proofread if possible – you’ll be amazed at the difference this makes, allowing you to return with a fresh pair of eyes and a more discerning judgment. 🤓

China Is Buying Gold Like There’s No Tomorrow

The global price of gold has reached its highest levels as Chinese investors and consumers, wary of real estate and stocks, buy the metal at a record pace.

As gold surged this year to its highest price ever, Xena Lin joined the frenzy by making monthly purchases of gold “beans,” pebble-like morsels of the precious metal.

For Ms. Lin, a 25-year-old administrative worker in southern China, the $80 beans — small enough to rest on a fingertip and weighing about one-thirtieth of an ounce — were an affordable way to buy into the gold excitement without splurging for jewelry, gold bars or coins. She had dabbled with investing in stocks in the past, but she said buying gold, especially in this fun way, inspired her to continue investing.

“I’m still working hard to save more,” Ms. Lin said.

Often considered a safe investment during times of geopolitical and economic turmoil, gold has soared in price in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the war in Gaza. But gold’s climb to highs above $2,400 per ounce has proved more resilient, and lasted longer, because of China.

Chinese consumers have flocked to gold as their confidence in traditional investments like real estate or stocks has faltered. At the same time, the country’s central bank has steadily added to its gold reserves, while whittling away at its holdings of U.S. debt. And throwing fuel on the fire are Chinese speculators betting that there is still room for appreciation.

China already held considerable sway in gold markets. But the country’s influence has become more pronounced during this latest bull run — a nearly 50 percent increase in the global price since late 2022. It continued to scale new heights despite factors that traditionally make gold a comparatively less appealing investment: higher interest rates and a strong U.S. dollar.

Last month, gold prices vaulted higher even after the Federal Reserve signaled that it would keep higher interest rates for longer . And it has continued to appreciate even as the dollar has risen against almost every major currency in the world this year.

Prices have pulled back to around $2,300 per ounce, but there is a growing sentiment that the gold market is governed no longer by economic factors but by the whims of Chinese buyers and investors.

“China is unquestionably driving the price of gold,” said Ross Norman, chief executive of MetalsDaily.com , a precious-metals information platform based in London. “The flow of gold to China has gone from solid to an absolute torrent.”

Gold consumption in the country rose 6 percent in the first quarter from a year earlier, according to the China Gold Association. It came on the heels of a 9 percent increase last year.

Gold investing became more alluring as traditional investments turned lackluster. China’s real estate sector, the destination for most families’ savings, remains in crisis. Investor confidence in the country’s stock markets has not fully returned. A string of big investment funds aimed at the wealthy toppled after failed bets on real estate.

With few better alternatives, money flowed into Chinese funds that traded in gold, and many young people took to collecting beans in tiny quantities.

Online merchants are aggressively hawking gold beans. On Alibaba’s Taobao, one of China’s biggest e-commerce platforms, a merchant sold gold beans on a livestream — a blend of the Home Shopping Network and Amazon. She said buying beans was “like shopping, but an investment.”

The tiny beans came in five shapes, including one that resembled a peanut and another like a persimmon. Paying $87 per bean, a person could buy into the gold boom for the price of a hot pot meal, she said.

Kelly Zhong, a teacher in Beijing, started buying gold in 2020 at the outset of the pandemic. She has amassed more than two pounds of gold bars, but she has also invested in the metal through exchange-traded funds. She said she was inspired by an old saying: “Jade in prosperous times, gold in troubled times.”

As she felt the world become more chaotic, Ms. Zhong added to her stockpile, betting that gold prices would only climb. She has stopped buying, but she is not ready to sell. She sees no reason to. The Chinese economy is still struggling, and neither real estate nor stocks seem like a sound investment.

“The money has to go somewhere,” she said.

Another major buyer of gold in China is the country’s central bank. In March, the People’s Bank of China added to its gold reserves for a 17th straight month. Last year, the bank bought more gold than any other central bank in the world, adding more to its reserves than it had in nearly 50 years.

Beijing is buying up gold to diversify its reserve funds and reduce its dependence on the U.S. dollar, long considered the most important currency to hold in reserve. China has been reducing its U.S. Treasury holdings for more than a decade. As of March, China had about $775 billion worth of U.S. debt, down from about $1.1 trillion in 2021.

When China increased its gold holdings in the past, it bought domestically using renminbi, said Guan Tao, global chief economist at BOC International in Beijing. But this time, he said, the bank is using foreign currencies to buy gold — effectively reducing its exposure to the U.S. dollar and other currencies.

Many central banks, including China, starting acquiring gold after the U.S. Treasury Department took the rare step of freezing Russia’s dollar holdings under sanctions imposed on Moscow. Other American allies imposed similar restrictions for their currencies.

Mr. Guan said the sanctions had shaken the “foundation of trust for the current international monetary system” and forced central banks to protect their reserves with more diverse holdings. “We can see this wave of gold’s rise may be different from the past,” he said.

Although Beijing has been buying up gold, the metal accounts for only about 4.6 percent of China’s foreign exchange reserves. In percentage terms, India holds nearly twice as much of its reserves in gold.

The combination of aggressive retail buying from Chinese consumers and central bank purchases has drawn the interest of speculators on markets in Shanghai who are betting that this trend will continue. Average trading volume for gold on the Shanghai Futures Exchange more than doubled in April from a year earlier.

“They are swimming with the tide,” said Mr. Norman from MetalsDaily. “China is now dominating the gold market.”

For Ms. Lin, buying gold beans is satisfying, she said, because it feels like frivolous shopping but she’s actually investing her money in something she can touch. She said she would continue to buy more beans.

“The price of gold always goes up and down,” she said. “But the increase is within the range that I can bear, so I think it’s OK.”
