1.3: Overview of Assignments

This course has fixed due dates that you have to meet. Research shows that students are most successful with distance education when they start their course work on time and make steady progress. Expect to work 6-9 hours per week on assignments for this course and  submit one assignment at a time. To help you do this, please follow the time line posted as an Excel file at the top of the Assignments page. You can print it out for your own reference. You are encouraged to move forward but you should not miss the due date of each unit. I understand that sometimes things may happen and you can’t meet the deadlines. If it does happen, let me know in advance so I can consider granting an extension. Late assignments will not be accepted.

NOTE : Testing centers are closed on Sundays. You have to submit all the assignments and complete all the exams by the course end date.

Course Description Focus on learning MS Office software applications including intermediate word processing, spreadsheets , database and presentation graphics using a case study approach where critical thinking and problem solving skills are required. Computer concepts are integrated throughout the course to provide an understanding of the basics of computing , the latest technological advances and how they are used in industry. Ethics and issues encountered in business are discussed to challenge students on societal impact of technology.

Course Goals 1. To understand the fundamentals of computing so students are able to use a computer as a decision support and problem solving tool. 2. To use software applications to assist in making organizational and business decisions. 3. To be aware of the latest technologies and their application to organizations. 4. To be aware of the ethical and social implications of computing so students can make informed, responsible decisions

Page 1 Course Objectives I. To integrate computer concepts topics with software application tasks so students understand the concepts underlying the application and can make informed decisions regarding the selection of an application to solve a particular business problem. 2. To understand the fundamentals of computing such as how a computer works, the components of the system unit, the differences between operating system and application software and the importance of security and data protection to provide a broad understanding of technology and its impact on business. 3. To develop strategies for organizing and managing files using the current operating system. 4. To learn desktop publishing and mail merge features including inserting hyperlinks, setting columns, creating tables, editing graphics and other sophisticated word processing features to maximize productivity. 5. To use statistical, financial and logical spreadsheet functions and formulas and other decision support tools to analyze data and solve problems using real world cases and scenarios. 6. To select and create graphs and chart that accurately represent data. 7. To understand how to create a database that eliminates data redundancy and ensures data integrity and how to access and present information from the database. 8. To be able to import and export data across multiple applications by evaluating data and choosing the best combination of applications to present the data. 9. To design visually appealing presentations that present data effective! y and in the most appropriate format to convey the intended message.

Course Format A combination of lecture, demonstration and lab activities will be used during class. Typically, the first part of the class will be dedicated to lecture and the remainder of the class will be used to complete lab­ based assignments. Web based activities and interactive labs provide material reinforcement and alternative methods to learning.

The following software is used in the 320 Oelman lab: Microsoft Windows 7 Operating System Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Suite Internet Explorer

Files submitted for grading must be in the cmTect format.

The course is divided into 6 modules: 1) Computer Concepts 2) Windows File Management 3) Word Processing 4) Spreadsheet 5) Database 6) Presentation Graphics Software

Page2 Grading and Evaluation Criteria The following tentative scale will be used to calculate your grade: 90-100 % A 80- 89 % B 70-79 % tag ">c 60-69% D 59 and below F

Students must earn a minimum grade of 60 % on each module to pass the course - as discussed by your Instructor.

Assignment and Exam Policy

Assignments and Exams are to be completed by the dates published on the due date sheet. Late assignments will lose one point for every class day that they are late. Assignments will not be accespted after the corresponding exam. No makeup exams will be given without prior notification and documentation.

Students with Disabilities Students with special needs should make the Instructor aware of any adaptations needed to complete this course during the first week of class. Backup Policy You are responsible for maintaining a backup copy of your assignments.

Classroom Policies and Guidelines for 320 Oelman 1) Any data save to the local hard drive will be deleted upon reboot. Save you data to a portable external drive such as a flash drive.

Please be sure to tum off both the monitor and the processing unit. 7) No eating, smoking or chewing gum in the classroom. 8) Notify the Instructor or Student Worker of any hardware problems.

To Log on the computers: Turn on Monitor and PC. Follow instructions on screen. (CTRL-ALT-DEL). Enter ecslogon. There is no password.

Operating system – An operating system is a software component of a computer system that is responsible for the management of various activities of the computer and sharing of computer resources. It hosts several application that run on a computer and handles the operations of computer hardware.

Complier – A complier is a special program that processes statements written in a particular programming language called as source code and converts them into machine language or machine code that computer processor uses.

Assembly Language – Assembly Language is a set of codes that can run directly on the computer’s processor. This type of language is most appropriate I writing operating system and maintaining desktop applications. With the assembly level language, it is easier f0or a programmer to define commands. It is easier to understand use as compared to machine language.

 Control unit – Controlling of all operation like input, processing and output    performed by control unit. It takes care of step by step processing of all operations inside the computer.

Question – 2 What is Application software?

Answer – Software that can perform a specific task for the user, such as word processing, accounting, budgeting or payroll, fall under the category of application software.

Primary memory can be further classified as RAM and ROM.

Question – 5 What is computer software?

Answer – Computer software is the set of programs that make the hardware perform a set of tasks in particular order. Hardware and Software are complimentary to each other. Both have to work together to produce meaningful results.

Basic of Data Communication and Computer Networking

Question – 1 What is computer network? What are its main objective?

Answer – A computer network is interconnection of various computer system located at different places. In computer network two or more computers are linked together with a medium and data communication device for the purpose of communicating data and sharing resources.

Question – 2 Explain the types of network.

Answer – There are many different types of networks. However, from an end user’s point of view there are three basic types:

  • Local Area Network
  • Wide area network
  • Metropolitan Area Network

Local Area Network – Local Area Network supplies networking capability to a group of computers in close proximity to each other such as in an office building, a school, or a home.

Wide Area Network – The term Wide Area Network usually refers to a network which convers a large geographical area, and use communications circuits to connect the intermediate nodes.

Metropolitan Area Network – A Metropolitan Area Network is one of a number  types of network (see also LAN and WAN).

Question – 3 Explain in Brief different communication media?

Answer – There are two forms of communication media: Analog: Includes conventional radio, telephonic and television transmissions. Digital: Computer-mediated communication, computer networking and telegraphy .

Question – 4 What is Video Conferencing?

Answer – Video conferencing is a live video-based meeting between two or more people in different locations using video-enabled devices. Video conferencing allows multiple people to meet and collaborate face to face long distance by transmitting audio, video, text and presentations in real time through the internet.

Answer – Audio conferencing is where two or more people in different locations use technology like a conference bridge to hold an audio call. Audio conferencing is different from a traditional phone in in that all participants dial into a central system that connects them instead of directly dialing each other .

Question – 1 What is Internet? What are its advantage and disadvantage?

Answer – The Internet connects computers all around the world through a vast global network. It makes it possible for data to be transferred among two or more computers linked via a network. As a result, the internet makes it easier to send communications via chat, audio, video conferencing, etc.

Question – 2 What are the various services of internet?

Answer – Common Internet services include chatting, e-mail, maps and directions, media downloads, real-time streaming audio and video, social media, and video-conferencing among many others .

Question – 3 Explain in brief different types of Internet connection.

Answer – One of the fastest options available, broadband Internet uses multiple data channels to send large quantities of information. The term broadband is shorthand for broad bandwidth. Broadband Internet connections such as DSL and cable are considered high-bandwidth connections .

Office Productivity Tools

  • Scroll bar – A scroll bar’s orientation determines the direction in which scrolling occurs when the user operates the scroll bar. A horizontal scroll bar enables the user to scroll the content of a window to the left or right. A vertical scroll bar enables the user to scroll the content up or down.
  • Font style – Font styles are used in both print and digital text. While typographic font styles have custom spacing and design, once determined, this style will apply to both lowercase and uppercase letters as well as punctuation marks.
  • Line spacing – Line spacing determines the amount of vertical space between lines of text in a paragraph. By default, lines are single-spaced, meaning that the spacing accommodates the largest font in that line, plus a small amount of extra space. Paragraph spacing determines the amount of space above or below a paragraph.
  • Merging document – Merge document is a combination of the main documents and the data source that can either be reviewed in MS-Word file or can be directly sent to the printer.

Question – 2 Write the steps for copying and moving text in wordprocessing.

  • Answer – Cut using Ctrl+X, move your cursor to the new location of text, then paste to the new location with Ctrl+V.
  • Copy using Ctrl+C, move your cursor to the new location of text, then paste to the new location with Ctrl+V.

Question – 3 What is the difference between Print preview and Print commands?

Answer – Print preview is the feature that allows the user to view the printed version of the document on the screen before printing it into a hard copy. Print command allows a user to print a hard copy of the document they want to.

Question – 4 Explain the concept of functions. What are the steps for entering functions in a worksheet?

Answer – Functions are predefined formulas and they are already incorporated in excel. You need to perform the function in order to put any formula. Select the function, insert the function button, choose from the drop down menu, and insert the function you want. Then click ok and you will get the desired result.

Question – 5 What are the different types of Charts?

Answer – There are several different types of charts and graphs. The four most common are probably line graphs, bar graphs and histograms, pie charts, and Cartesian graphs. They are generally used for, and are best for, quite different things.

Answer – A database is an organized collection of structured information, or data, typically stored electronically in a computer system. A database is usually controlled by a database management system (DBMS).

Answer – A record: Contains specific data, like information about a particular employee or a product. A field: Contains data about one aspect of the table subject, such as first name or e-mail address. A field value: Each record has a field value. For example, Contoso, Ltd. or [email protected] .

Answer – It is an absolute presentation graphics package that gives you everything needed to create a professional-looking presentation. PowerPoint offers word processing, drawing, outlining, graphing, and presentation management tools.

Answer – Step 1: Select one or more points from your bullet list and open the Bullet menu from the Home tab. Click Bullets and Numbering to proceed further.

Step 2: From the Bulleted tab select Picture to pick an online or offline image to use for your bullet point(s).
