✏️ Dissertation FAQ

While working on a dissertation, you might deal with several types of research. The main research types are primary, qualitative, quantitative, and legal. In any case, it’s the way in which a researcher studies the subject using a particular methodology.

First of all, make sure that you are personally fascinated by the subject. This is essential for any thesis, be it master’s or an undergraduate dissertation. Besides, make sure the topic is feasible and hasn’t been studies much.

A good dissertation title is the one that represents the subject under study. To state which aspect is being studied is also important. The title should include neither a hypothesis nor a conclusion: think about it as “spoilers”—nobody likes them.

Just like any paper, a great dissertation is the one that is well-organized. The topic of the paper should correspond to the title. The text should have a cohesive structure with a definite introduction, argumentative main part, and a logical conclusion.

Picking what you’ll study for your big research project (dissertation) is a really important choice. Take your time and think about it carefully. Here are some steps to help you pick the right topic:

  • Reflect on your interests: Consider topics that genuinely interest you and align with your passion and expertise. Your enthusiasm will sustain you through the research process.
  • Review existing literature: Conduct a thorough review of literature in your field to identify gaps, unanswered questions, or emerging trends that could form the basis of your research.
  • Consider practical relevance: Choose a topic that has practical relevance and real-world implications for your field, industry, or community. Aim to address pressing issues or challenges faced by practitioners or organizations.
  • Consult with advisors and peers: Seek feedback from your academic advisors, mentors, or peers to get their perspectives on potential topics. They can give you good advice and assist you in making your ideas better.
  • Narrow down your focus: Once you have a broad topic in mind, narrow it down to a specific research question or area of investigation. Make sure your topic is manageable within the scope of your dissertation and aligns with the available resources and timeline.
  • Evaluate feasibility: Figure out if your topic is doable by checking if you can find enough information, if you have the right tools to study it, if it’s morally okay, and if there are any real-life limits that might get in the way. Ensure that you have access to the necessary resources and support to conduct your research effectively.
  • Stay flexible: Stay ready to change or improve your topic as you learn more during your research and find out new things. Your dissertation topic might change as you go, so it’s important to be open to that and be able to adjust along the way.
  • Consider your long-term goals: Think about how your dissertation topic aligns with your long-term academic or career goals. Choose a topic that will allow you to develop valuable skills, make meaningful contributions to your field, and position yourself for future opportunities.

⭐ What Does a Thesis in Economics Look Like?

A good thesis in economics is a blend between an empirical paper and a theoretical one. One of the essential steps in choosing a topic in economics is to decide which one you will write.

You may write, research, analyze statistical data and other information. Or build and study a specific economic model.

Or why not both!

Here are some questions you can ask when deciding what topic to choose:

  • What has already been written on this topic?
  • What economic variables will my paper study?
  • Where should I look for the data?
  • What econometrics techniques should I use?
  • What type of model will I study?

The best way to understand what type of research you have to do is to write a thesis proposal. You will most probably be required to submit it anyway. Your thesis supervisor will examine your ideas, methods, list of secondary and primary sources. At some universities, the proposal will be graded.

Master’s thesis and Bachelor’s thesis have three main differences.

After you get the initial feedback, you will have a clear idea of what to adjust before writing your thesis. Only then, you’ll be able to start.

📝 How to Select an Economics Thesis Topic

As your academic journey is coming to an end, it’s time to pick the right topic for your thesis. The whole academic life you were preparing to undertake this challenge.

Here is the list of six points that will help you to select an economics thesis topic:

  • Make sure it is something you are genuinely interested in. It is incredibly challenging to write something engaging if you are not interested in the topic. So, choose wisely and chose what excites you.
  • Draw inspiration from the previous student’s projects. A great place to start is by looking at what the previous students wrote. You can find some fresh ideas and a general direction.
  • Ask your thesis advisor for his feedback. Most probably, your thesis advisor supervised many students before. They can be a great help too because they know how to assess papers. Before meeting with your professor, do some basic research, and understand what topic is about.
  • Be original, but not too much. You do not want to spend your time writing about a project that many people wrote about. Your readers will not be interested in reading it, but your professors as well. However, make sure you do not pick anything too obscure. It will leave you with no secondary sources.
  • Choose a narrow and specific topic. Not only will it allow you to be more original, but also to master a topic. When the issue is too broad, there is just too much information to cover in one thesis.
  • Go interdisciplinary. If you find yourself interested in history, philosophy, or any other related topic, it can help you write an exceptional thesis in economics. Most of your peers may work on pure economics. Then, the interdisciplinary approach can help you to stand out among them.

Some universities ask their students to focus on topics from one discipline.

master thesis topics 2021

Without any doubt, a thesis is the most important paper in the academic life of a student or young researcher. Many of them may be a bit afraid of the scope of work that awaits or the inability to find good thesis topics. Do you find yourself in such a situation when you seem to have lots of thesis topic ideas, but a well-formulated topic does not come to your mind? Don’t worry! Our writing experts have got your back! In this post, we will share the list of thesis topics and provide you with the best tips and tricks for choosing the best one.

How to Choose a Thesis Topic

A choice of a unique title for a thesis is quite a challenging task. There are many under-researched and heavily debated topics in the world of science, but how to find the one suitable for your paper? Let’s review some secrets to finding a perfect topic:

  • In order to start working on a thesis, you don't need inspiration but a plan of action and a routine. After all, it's not creative writing. When you just start working, you'll see that inspiration comes as a result of daily work.
  • Choose a few research routes and read scientific publications on topics that interest you the most. Be sure to ask yourself questions on the material you reviewed, record your thoughts daily, and discuss them with other researchers or your advisor - and great topic ideas will not make you wait!
  • Maybe you already have some materials or have previously researched a topic you were interested in – just not as thoroughly as you need to do for a thesis. If it is so, go back to them and see if you can make a previous topic into something more elaborate.
  • The issue you have chosen as a central theme of your thesis should not be extremely challenging for you to research. Some topics are best left for your dissertation as they will require more time, effort, and knowledge of the subject.
  • It might not be a good idea to choose an overly popular issue that is currently studied by thousands of researchers over the world. You’ll hardly find anything new about this issue, and your thesis question won’t have this much-needed novelty.
  • Concentrating on a controversial issue is also not the best idea. A topic that has many avid supporters and opponents may cause an unpredictable reaction from your paper examiners. Who knows, maybe your paper will be reviewed by a person who has a polarized opinion on the issue under consideration.
  • Although young researchers often avoid feedback in the early stages of research, the advice of more experienced fellow researchers can help you understand whether you are moving in the right direction or not with your topic and, if necessary, direct your actions in a timely manner. And discussing your research with fellow graduate students like you will help you feel a sense of belonging to a community of like-minded people and motivate you for further achievements.
  • Finally, it is best to select a topic that you can find lots of supporting literature for. As you’ll need to provide background information and conduct a literature review on the topic, you will require a lot of data.

What Makes a Thesis Topic Great?

It’s a good question each student should ask before deciding on a topic. What do ideal topics for a thesis look like?

  • They touch upon topical issues. Science is designed to study topical issues and find solutions to them. This is also the purpose of your thesis. Therefore, the topic for the work should be relevant, modern, and extensive.
  • They spark debates. In other words, these are interesting thesis topics. For example, if your major is Biology, writing about Covid-19 would be a perfect option. Besides, the working process would be much faster and more effective if you are genuinely interested in the issues you study.
  • They are neither too long nor too short. This tip concerns the way you formulate the topic. The title you come up with must be informative but not too long. Choosing an overly brief topic name is also not a good idea because it may fail to cover some important aspects of your research.
  • They must be related to your academic program. This one may sound a bit obvious, but it’s a common student mistake to go off-subject. If you choose a topic that seems interesting and well-developed to you but appears irrelevant to your professor/research advisor, you will have to change it. Seek advice on where you went wrong and what you can do to get back on track.
  • They concentrate on one central issue. A golden rule of writing a thesis is that your topic should be narrowed down. There is no use in concentrating on several issues at once. Instead, you have to focus on a specific issue and research it using the method that works best.
  • They can be supported using research. Generally, there should be enough suitable sources for you to study. Alternatively, you should understand the methodology you can use to obtain credible results and if you can really use it. For instance, you might not have a chance to visit another continent to gather data or interview hundreds of people who don’t use technology.
