Program Description

The summer program at the NIAMS is a stimulating and rewarding experience that provides an opportunity for you to work side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. Intramural investigators pursue diverse biomedical research projects that include fundamental analyses of protein structure and function, cell biology, signal transduction, gene regulation, tissue development and differentiation, and genetics and immunology. They also conduct research on the genetics, etiology, pathogenesis, and treatment of a variety of rheumatic, autoimmune, inflammatory, joint, skin, and muscle diseases.

Outstanding opportunities exist for undergraduate, graduate, and medical students contemplating a career in biomedical research or academic medicine.

Eligibility

The Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research is for undergraduates and students in professional programs (M.D., Ph.D., M.D./Ph.D., D.D.S., Pharm. D., etc.) who meet the following requirements:

• U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
• Enrolled at least half-time in an accredited U.S. college/university/medical school/dental school. OR
• Accepted for fall admission to an accredited U.S. college/university/medical school/dental school.
• Able to arrive at the NIH in mid-May or early June and commit a minimum of eight consecutive weeks to the program. Students enrolled in the program are expected to work full time in the lab for eight weeks. Vacation time is not permitted due to the short duration for the program.
• All are welcome to apply, including those from underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities and persons from disadvantaged backgrounds or with disabilities.

Training Period

Summer internships begin in mid-May or early June, depending on your schedule and that of the lab you will be working with. You must commit to a minimum of eight consecutive weeks for the internship.

Financial Support

Funding rates are based on experience and determined annually. Rates from last year’s program are listed below for reference (effective May 1, 2023).

Summer internship program in biomedical sciences, opportunity description:.

Program Description:  Summer programs at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) provide an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIH side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research (At the NIH "biomedical research" includes everything from behavioral and social sciences, through biology and chemistry, to physics, mathematical modeling, computational biology, and biostatistics). The NIH consists of the 240-bed Mark O. Hatfield Clinical Research Center and more than 1150 laboratories/research groups located on the main campus in Bethesda, MD, and the surrounding area as well as in Baltimore and Frederick, MD; Research Triangle Park, NC; Hamilton, MT; Framingham, MA; Phoenix, AZ; and Detroit, MI.  NOTE: the number of positions in Hamilton, Framingham, Phoenix, and Detroit is limited.

Internships cover a minimum of eight weeks, with students generally arriving at the NIH in May or June. The NIH Institutes/Centers and the Office of Intramural Training & Education (OITE) sponsor a wide range of summer activities including an orientation to help interns get off to a good start, lectures featuring distinguished NIH investigators, career/professional development workshops, and Summer Poster Day.

To increase your chances of being offered a position, please do four things:

• Read the  SIP FAQs  carefully.
• Read our  suggestions for creating a successful SIP application .
• After submitting your application,  if you applied to the General  SIP Program,  contact NIH investigators with whom you would like to work and explain why you would be a good addition to their groups.  (IMPORTANT NOTE: applicants to SIP subprograms should NOT contact investigators.)   You can identify NIH investigators with projects that interest you by searching the  NIH Intramural Annual Reports . Use the text search feature to find project descriptions that contain the key words you enter. You can also visit the  NIH Intramural Research Program website  for a list of investigators organized by scientific focus area.  You can then find contact information for the investigators in the  NIH Enterprise Directory .

Stipend Information:  The stipends for trainees are adjusted yearly; the level depends on education completed prior to starting at the NIH. For details, see the  Trainee Stipends  page. The Institute/Center (IC) in which you work or your research group pays your stipend.

Minimum Qualifications and/or Eligibility Requirements: 

Eligibility:  The 2020 Summer Internship Program is for students who

• are 17 years of age or older on June 15, 2020,
• are U.S. citizens or permanent residents,  AND
• are enrolled at least half-time in and accredited college (including community college) or university as an undergraduate, graduate, or professional student at the time of application*,  OR
•  have been accepted into accredited college or university program for the fall semester.

*Individuals who are U.S. permanent residents must be attending or have been accepted into  institutions in the U.S.

Students with disabilities; students from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by the NSF to be underrepresented in health-related sciences on a national basis (Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Native Americans, and Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders); students who identify as LGBTQ; students who are Pell-grant eligible; and others disadvantaged by circumstances that have negatively impacted their educational opportunities,  including recent natural disasters , are encouraged to apply.

Background Check:  In order to be approved for logical and physical access to NIH facilities and systems, candidates must be able to pass a Federal background check, using Standard Form-85 ( read SF-85 ). NOTE: Section 14 of the form asks “In the last year, have you used, possessed, supplied, or manufactured illegal drugs?” The question pertains to the illegal use of drugs or controlled substances in accordance with Federal laws, even though permissible under state laws.    

Application Process: 

Application Procedure:  Prospective candidates must  apply online . The application is available from mid-November to March 1. It requires submission of

• a curriculum vitae or resume,
• a list of coursework and grades (please note: we do not need a transcript at this time),
• a cover letter describing the applicant's research interests and career goals, and
• the names and contact information for two references.

Candidates may also specify the general subject areas, scientific methodologies and/or disease/organ systems that interest them.

Selection:  The NIH Summer Internship Program is highly competitive.  In 2019, 4523 completed applications were submitted by students in college and graduate and professional school, and 1025 interns were selected. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis from November through April by scientists in the Institutes and Centers of the NIH.   Individual scientists select their own summer interns and provide their funding; there is no centralized selection process, and the OITE plays no role.  Data for 2017 indicate that applicants who submit their materials in the first two weeks have a success rate almost 3 times greater than those who submit during the 2 weeks just before the deadline.  For additional suggestions on how to increase your chances of being offered a position, please read the  SIP Frequently Asked Questions . Candidates will be informed of their selection by the hiring Institute or Center, generally by May 1. Successful candidates will be required to submit the following documentation to their Institute or Center prior to beginning their training:

• Official college or graduate/professional school transcripts
• Proof of U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status. U.S. citizens may submit a copy of their birth certificate or passport. Permanent residents will need to provide a copy of their permanent resident (green) card.

PhD students are required to have completed their qualifying exams before the application deadline. *Note: Due to internship policy variations between JHU schools, PhD students in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences are only eligible for semester-long or summer internships.

This program is for college, graduate and professional students interested in exploring careers in research and healthcare. These are full-time research positions within one of the NIH Institutes and Centers (IC) in the NIH Intramural Research Program. Research groups are located on all NIH campuses, including the main campus in Bethesda, MD.

Summer interns work in a research groups directed by a Principal Investigator (PI). We offer research opportunities in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences with opportunities to explore basic, translational, and clinical research. Students interested in biology, engineering, epidemiology, psychology, mathematics, chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, nursing, physics, computer science, bioinformatics, and other health-related fields are invited to apply. Summer interns may not work in administrative offices or outside of the NIH IRP.

In addition to an intensive research experience, our summer interns have access to:

• professional development programs focused on core competencies needed for success in scientific careers
• focused on core competencies needed for success in research and healthcare careers
• educational and career advising
• a comprehensive well-being and resilience program

We also sponsor a Graduate and Professional School Fair in July and Summer Poster Day in early August, where our interns share their research with the NIH community.

Our goal is to support diverse students to enter careers in research and healthcare. To help us achieve this, we sponsor summer cohort programs.

Summer interns in these programs  have access to all resources of the broader SIP program and also participate in orientation, leadership, professional development,  and well-being programs as part of a cohort or  learning community. The curriculum of each cohort program is tailored to the educational needs of the group. The OITE provides funding and works with interns in these programs on an appropriate research group placement.  The OITE sponsors the following SIP cohort experiences:

• CCSEP for students in community college
• C-SOAR for college students who have limited access to research opportunities during the school year
• V-SOAR for college students who are not able to come to an NIH campus
• GDSSP for master’s students in data science
• M-SOAR for medical students interested in translational science

Some ICs also sponsor SIP programs - find them on the additional summer programs page .

To apply for the NIH SIP, and SIP cohort programs, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. In addition, you must be:

• 17 years of age or older on June 15, 2024
• a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
• enrolled at least half-time in an accredited community college, college, or university as an undergraduate, graduate, or professional school student at the time of application,
• accepted into an accredited graduate program for the fall semester with the expectation of attending at least half-time. High school graduates who completed a gap year and are starting community college or college in the fall, are also eligible to apply.

Individuals who are U.S. permanent residents must be attending or have been accepted into educational institutions in the U.S.

Applicants with a family member working at NIH should be aware of the strict nepotism policy , which may limit your ability to work in certain NIH institutes, centers, or research groups.

Stipends for summer interns are adjusted annually and are based on educational level. There is free parking on each NIH campus; summer interns on some campuses may be eligible to participate in the Transhare program .

All summer interns must present proof of health insurance to participate in the program.

The decision to come to the NIH as a summer intern is an important one.  These are full-time research positions, and it is not possible to take summer classes or tend to other responsibilities during work hours.

To be considered for a SIP position, you should reach out to NIH Principal Investigators(PIs) and direct them to your completed application .

• Search databases and develop a list of PIs in the Intramural Research Program whose work interests you. Note that PIs may reach out to you to see if you are interested in working in their group.
• Send personalized emails to PIs expressing interesting in their research group and highlighting why you are a strong candidate for their program.
• Interview, virtually or in-person.

There is no centralized selection process; applications are reviewed by individual Principal Investigators (PIs) who select their own summer interns and provide the funding to support them. PIs begin interviewing candidates and offering positions in early January and the selection process is completed by April 15, 2024. Successful candidates will be informed by their PI and on-boarding paperwork will be done by the hiring IC.

Remember that the application and selection process for OITE and IC programs may differ, so read information specific to programs that interest you.

Dear Colleague Letter: Graduate Research Internships at National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NSF-NIBIB/BETA INTERN) Supplemental Funding Opportunity

Dear Colleague:

Fostering the growth of a globally competitive and diverse research workforce and advancing the scientific and innovation skills of the Nation is a strategic objective of the National Science Foundation (NSF). The NSF and Center for Biomedical Engineering Technology Acceleration ( BETA ) housed in the National Institutes of Health (NIH)- National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering ( NIBIB ) have entered into a partnership to support the training of graduate students to meet both the NSF's strategic workforce development objectives as well the NIBIB's mission to transform through engineering the understanding of disease and its prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment and NIBIB's support of the next generation of diverse, interdisciplinary researchers across the career continuum.

This Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) describes this unique partnership with NIBIB/BETA and is aligned with and conforms with the NSF INTERN opportunity described in the Dear Colleague Letter: Non-Academic Research Internships for Graduate Students (INTERN) Supplemental Funding Opportunity . This DCL is referred to as the NSF - NIBIB/BETA INTERN DCL.

Recipients submitting an INTERN supplemental funding request are required to have a policy or code of conduct that addresses sexual harassment, other forms of harassment, and sexual assault. For more information, read about NSF policies regarding harassment .

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITY

NSF will consider supplemental funding requests that enable a Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI to request up to six months of additional support for a graduate student supported on an active NSF award with the following goals:

• To provide graduate students with the opportunity to augment their research assistantships or NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) fellowships with non-academic research internship activities and training opportunities that will complement their academic research training.
• To allow graduate students to engage in professional development experiences that will enhance their preparation for multiple career pathways after graduation.
• To encourage the participation of the full spectrum of diverse talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

ELIGIBILITY

Recipients with awards that include funding for graduate students, including institutional Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) awards, are eligible to submit a supplemental funding request. The PI for an active GRFP fellowship (not the GRFP fellow) should contact GRFP ( [email protected] ) regarding specific requirements before submitting a supplemental funding request on behalf of a GRFP fellow.

To be supported through an INTERN supplement responding to this DCL, graduate students (including graduate research fellows) being considered must have completed at least one academic year in their graduate programs (master's or doctoral), be in good academic standing and demonstrate satisfactory progress towards their research.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

PIs and co-PIs of NSF grants and the research advisor of the GRFP fellows are encouraged to contact Dr. Manu Platt ( [email protected] ) at NIBIB/BETA, to explore suitable opportunities for research traineeships at NIBIB/BETA in Bethesda, Maryland, for the graduate students who are supported on their NSF grants.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING REQUEST PREPARATION INSTRUCTIONS

Information about requesting supplemental support is contained in the NSF Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide ( PAPPG ), Chapter VI.E.5. In addition to the PAPPG requirements for supplemental support, the following materials must be included.

• A two-page summary that describes the internship
• A one-page personal statement from the graduate student describing career goals, accomplishments, and how the activity will better prepare the individual to enter the workforce.
• Research summary to include contribution(s) to research discipline
• Institution(s)
• Year of study (1st year, 2nd year, etc.)
• Completed coursework
• Employment and volunteer/outreach history
• Publications (accepted only)
• Other information relevant to the proposed internship
• A letter of collaboration from an authorized official at the host organization that describes the internship opportunity and mentoring the student will experience during the internship.
• An endorsement letter from the PI that confirms that the student meets the eligibility requirements specified in this DCL. The letter must describe how the proposed internship activity will contribute to the student's graduate education experience and how it may impact time to degree.
• A budget and a clear justification for all requested budget costs.

SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING AMOUNT

The total amount of funding requested must not exceed $55,000 per student for one six-month period. NSF plans to fund about 5-10 supplements per fiscal year, depending on the availability of funds.

PERIOD OF SUPPORT

The supplement funding will provide up to six months of support for an internship. Note: only one supplemental funding request may be submitted for a given student. A PI or co-PI may submit no more than one request per year of their award if there are multiple graduate students supported by the award, with the exception that GRFP will consider requests for internships for more than one GRFP Fellow from a single GRFP award.

Supplemental funding requests may be submitted at any time.

SUBMISSION AND REVIEW

Requests for supplemental funding must be submitted via Research.gov. A PI or Co-PI with an NSF award should contact the program director who manages the award prior to submission. GRFP INTERN supplement requests are submitted by the GRFP PI, not by the GRFP fellow or the fellow's research advisor. Requests for supplemental funding submitted in response to this DCL will be reviewed internally by NSF program directors. All supplements are subject to (a) the availability of funds and (b) merit review of the supplemental funding request.

SPECIAL AWARD CONDITION

Intellectual Property Rights: Internships under this DCL are considered equivalent to traineeships. The National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering claims no rights to any inventions or writings that might result from its traineeship awards. However, trainees should be aware that NSF, another Federal agency, or some private party may acquire such rights through other support for particular research. Also, trainees should note their obligation to include an Acknowledgment and Disclaimer in any publication.

PITT OHIO , a highly profitable transportation solutions provider offering SUPPLY CHAIN, GROUND, LTL and TRUCKLOAD services is seeking a Market Research/PowerBI Summer Intern. This internship position is located at our corporate headquarters in the Strip District area of Pittsburgh, PA .

Responsibilities:

• Meet with internal PITT OHIO teams to identify customer data sources and rules
• Collaborate with IT to add data to reporting source (SQL Server data warehouse and Snowflake)
• Present this data using PowerBI
• Train Sales team on how to use the new PowerBI solution

Assist with building new SIMS data for Accounts Receivables

Qualifications:

• Must be majoring in one of the following areas: Marketing or IT
• GPA 3.5 or higher
• Fluent English language skills required to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
• Must possess excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work independently
• Excellent organizational skills
• Ability to work with large data sets in Excel
• A functional knowledge of SQL, PowerBI and Snowflake
• Effective problem-solving skills
• Strong multitasking skills, ability to set priorities and accomplish objectives to meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
