This is an excerpt from my book, Johnson, A. (2024). Being and becoming teachers of writing: A meaning-based approach. This chapter describes each step of the five-step writing process. Pre-writing is used to generate and organize ideas. Drafting is used to get the ideas on paper. Revising is used to shape ideas. Editing is used to attend to grammar, spelling, and punctuation. And publishing and sharing are used to get the writing ideas out into the world. Each step of the five-step writing process, as well as other writing skills, should be taught using the elements of effective skills instruction: input, modeling/demonstration, guided practice, independent practice, and review. Six types of writing should be included in a writing curriculum: persuasive writing, narrative writing, expository writing, scientific writing, the arts, and communication.
